2026 WAFCONQ: Black Queens boycott training over unpaid bonuses, threaten not to play Egypt

-

The Black Queens of Ghana have refused to train ahead of their crucial second-leg clash with Egypt in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, protesting over unpaid bonuses.

Reports indicate that members of the women’s senior national team are still owed outstanding bonuses from their 2024 WAFCON campaign in Morocco, where they finished third.

Each player is believed to be owed $9,500 in bonuses from that tournament, which ended in July.

The Queens had earlier threatened to boycott the first leg of the qualifier in Ismailia but eventually honoured the fixture after a series of meetings with senior officials.

The team later received their per diems for the international break, but only after recording a commanding 3-0 victory over the Egyptian Cleopatras.

However, despite holding a strong advantage heading into Tuesday’s decisive return leg at the Accra Sports Stadium, the players refused to train on Saturday in protest over the unpaid sums.

The standoff has cast uncertainty over Ghana’s qualification hopes for the 2026 WAFCON, a tournament that also serves as the pathway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
