The government has announced plans to procure high occupancy buses as part of measures to improve urban mobility and provide safer, reliable and affordable public transport for Ghanaians.
Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed that the government has reallocated GH¢400 million in the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review for the acquisition of buses to strengthen the fleet of state-owned transport companies, including Metro Mass Transit (MMT) and the State Transport Company (STC).
Presenting the budget review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Dr Forson said the intervention is aimed at expanding public transport capacity, particularly on high-demand urban and intercity routes.
According to him, the move will help reduce long passenger queues during peak hours and provide commuters with a more reliable alternative to the use of private vehicles.
He added that the acquisition of additional buses forms part of broader efforts to address transportation challenges and improve efficiency within the public transport sector.
“Mr. Speaker, the government is committed to improving urban mobility and providing safe, reliable, and affordable public transport for Ghanaians. To this end, the government is reallocating 400 million Ghana cedis for the acquisition of high-occupancy buses, which will strengthen the fleets of state-owned transport companies, including Metro Mass Transit and the State Transport Company.
“This intervention will expand public transport capacity, particularly along high-demand urban and intercity routes. It will help reduce long passenger queues during peak hours and provide commuters with more reliable and efficient alternatives to private vehicles,” Dr Forson told Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Finance Minister also announced additional funding for flood control and mitigation measures across the country.
He said GH¢226 million has been reallocated within the budgets of the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources to support the implementation of additional interventions aimed at reducing the impact of flooding.
The allocation, he noted, is part of government’s continued efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and protect communities vulnerable to flooding.
“To strengthen flood mitigation efforts, the government has reallocated 226 million from the budget of the Ministry of Works and Housing and Water Resources to implement additional flood control and mitigation measures,” he said.
