2024 WAFCON: Kim Lars Björkegren confident of quarterfinals spot despite Black Queens winless start

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances of progressing to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), despite a difficult start to the tournament.

Ghana has yet to record a win in Group C, following a 2-0 opening defeat to defending champions South Africa and a 1-1 draw against Mali on Friday.

The results leave the Queens third in the group with a solitary point from two matches.

Speaking ahead of their decisive final group game on Monday night at the Stade Municipal de Berkane, Björkegren urged calm and expressed belief in his team’s potential to qualify.

“We had 2.6 on expected goals as compared to their 0.6 chance of scoring,” the Swiss trainer said after the game against the Malians on Friday night.

“If we display the same performance, if we play like this, we are probably in the quarterfinals.”

Despite the pressure, the coach remains composed: “I think I am happy with one point; there is no reason to panic at this point.

“We still have a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals,” he added.

Ghana’s crucial final group match is set to kick off at 19:00 GMT.
