15-year-old boy allegedly dies in police custody at Tarkwa-Simpa

-

A 15-year-old boy, Simon Obeng, has tragically died while in custody at the Tarkwa-Simpa Police station in the Western region.

Information gathered by Adom News has revealed that Simon was arrested on Thursday, June 5, 2025, after being accused of stealing gold from his employer.

He was brought to the station by the company’s foreman and detained, pending further investigations into the matter.

Unfortunately, he was found dead in the cell on the morning of Sunday, June 8, 2025, allegedly having hanged himself.

Reports indicate his family was promptly informed about the incident, but they suspect foul play.

A failed bail attempt by the foreman, Ezekiel Asare, and the mining site owner, Nana Adu, on Saturday, just a day before the alleged suicide has raised further questions.

The family is demanding answers on why the minor was denied bail and also had no supervision while in custody.

Adding to the controversy, police reports suggest Simon in his written statement said that he was 18 but his mother, Akua Atta, has strongly refuted this, insisting her son was just 15.

The grieving family has since called for an independent probe, alleging foul play and urging government and human rights institutions to intervene.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service say an internal investigation has been launched into the matter and has assured the public of transparency and professionalism throughout the process.
