A total of 118 former parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have declared their support for presidential hopeful Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s January 31, 2026, primaries.
The endorsement was announced at a press conference addressed by the former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer.
The former Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture said the decision followed extensive consultations and a careful reflection on the outcome of the 2024 general elections.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s leadership qualities, integrity and strong commitment to innovation position him as the most suitable candidate to lead the NPP into the future.
Mr Egyapa Mercer cited Dr. Bawumia’s track record in public service, economic management and digital transformation as key reasons behind the group’s endorsement.
He added that the backing cuts across all regions and constituencies, describing it as a reflection of a broad-based consensus within the party’s grassroots and leadership structures.
Meanwhile, he appealed to NPP delegates to vote massively for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and to refrain from hate speech, stressing the need for unity within the party before, during and after the primaries.
