One hundred personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service have undergone specialised training in pre-hospital emergency care at the Fire Academy and Training School as part of efforts to strengthen emergency response and casualty management.

The training was organised through a partnership between the Fire Service and the Elijeko Foundation, aimed at equipping fire officers with critical skills needed to manage injured victims before they are transported to health facilities.

Firefighters are often among the first responders at emergency scenes where victims may have sustained varying degrees of injuries. Without timely and appropriate care, such injuries can lead to preventable deaths or long-term complications.

The initiative therefore sought to bridge gaps in emergency medical response by improving the capacity of officers to provide immediate care.

Personnel from the Tema Regional Headquarters and the National Headquarters of the Fire Service participated in the programme.

The training covered key areas including mass casualty management, bleeding control, choking interventions, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and other essential first aid techniques. The practical sessions were designed to build the confidence and competence of officers when responding to real-life emergencies.

Speaking during the programme, a lead member of the Foundation, Andrews Nyantakyi, said the organisation remains committed to building the capacity of both emergency responders and ordinary citizens in pre-hospital emergency care.

According to him, the collaboration with the Fire Service is intended to deepen professional knowledge among personnel and ultimately help save lives during emergencies.

Participants described the training as timely and impactful, expressing optimism that the skills acquired would improve casualty outcomes and contribute to more effective emergency response operations within the Service.
