Adamus Resources Limited has rejected the government’s decision to revoke its mining leases, describing the move as unfair and not grounded in due process.

In a statement, the company said it was responding “in the interest of accuracy and public clarity” after authorities cancelled its leases covering the Akango, Salman and Nkroful concessions.

Adamus disputed the basis for the decision, insisting it operates legally under permits issued within Ghana’s regulatory framework, including approvals from the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency in line with the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703).

“The company strongly rejects the allegations that have been cited as the basis for the revocation and states that they do not reflect the true facts surrounding its operations,” the statement said.

The company also raised concerns about what it described as a breach of due process, arguing that it was not formally notified of the allegations or given the opportunity to respond.

“The company was not formally notified of the specific allegations and was not afforded the opportunity to address same as required by the mining laws of Ghana,” it stated, adding that the decision undermines “established principles of fairness and administrative justice.”

Adamus further denied any involvement in illegal mining or unlawful subcontracting, maintaining that it remains committed to responsible operations.

“The company categorically denies any involvement in illegal mining activities or unlawful subcontracting,” it said, stressing its adherence to Ghana’s laws and regulations.

The company noted that it is engaging relevant authorities to resolve the matter and expressed confidence that “a full and fair examination of the facts will demonstrate its compliance with applicable law.”

The revocation was announced by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on April 26, following investigations by the Minerals Commission.

Authorities said the decision was based on alleged unauthorised mining, regulatory breaches and environmental concerns, including operations without approved permits and activities outside designated concession areas.

The Ministry said the action was taken in the public interest under provisions of Act 703 and warned that it does not rule out possible criminal prosecution of the company’s directors and management.

It also assured that steps would be taken to protect affected workers while reaffirming the government’s commitment to tackling illegal mining and enforcing compliance within Ghana’s mining sector.

Free Zones CEO Dr Mary Awusi apologises to Church of Pentecost Chairman over galamsey remarks https://www.adomonline.com/free-zones-ceo-dr-mary-awusi-apologises-to-church-of-pentecost-chairman-over-galamsey-remarks/ Sat, 25 Apr 2026 13:36:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655636 The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr Mary Awusi, has issued an apology to the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye, following her earlier comments regarding his views on illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.

Her apology comes after a sharp response she delivered during a radio interview sparked public discussion.

In an interview with Accra FM on Friday, April 24, Dr Awusi acknowledged that in expressing her opinion, she may have made remarks that were not well received by some Ghanaians.

She emphasised her respect for Apostle Nyamekye’s position and contribution to society, noting that rising to the role of Chairman of the Church of Pentecost requires significant dedication and spiritual commitment. She described him as a man deserving of honour.

Dr Awusi stated that while she was responding to comments made by the Church leader, she did not intend to offend.

“Maybe in the process of also expressing my opinion… if I said something that isn’t nice, I apologise,” she said, adding that her earlier reaction was shaped by her interpretation of his remarks on galamsey.

The controversy stems from Apostle Nyamekye’s comments during the Church’s 48th General Conference, where he highlighted the environmental and social impact of illegal mining, including its effect on religious practices such as water baptism.

Galamsey fight: Stop ‘Presbyterian approach’ and take drastic action – Kwame Akuffo tells gov’t https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-fight-stop-presbyterian-approach-and-take-drastic-action-kwame-akuffo-tells-govt/ Sat, 25 Apr 2026 11:29:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655595 Private legal practitioner Kwame Boafo Akuffo has called for more aggressive and decisive action in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

He insists that Ghana can no longer rely on what he described as a slow and ineffective approach.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, April 25, he stressed that illegal mining is endangering lives and called for stronger state intervention to protect citizens and natural resources.

“Those who are in galamsey are taking our collective lives, and the state has the responsibility with the citizens to protect and fight any associations or entities that are taking our right to life. This issue of deploying people from Accra to go and fight galamsey in other places is rather too slow for me,” he said.

He further urged a shift from what he termed a “Presbyterian approach” to enforcement, arguing that the current strategy lacks urgency and must be replaced with more drastic and immediate measures to address the crisis effectively.

Kwame Akuffo’s comments come amid growing concern from religious and community leaders about the devastating impact of galamsey.

The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, recently warned that illegal mining is disrupting both livelihoods and religious practices, including water baptism, due to the pollution of rivers in affected areas.

Government adopts undercover strategy in galamsey fight – Lands Ministry https://www.adomonline.com/government-adopts-undercover-strategy-in-galamsey-fight-lands-ministry/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 16:08:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655547 The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has announced a shift in strategy in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, introducing intelligence-led and undercover deployments across affected districts.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, the Ministry’s Media Liaison Officer, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, revealed that the deployment model under the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations (NAIMOS) has been revised to improve effectiveness.

According to him, personnel will now be stationed permanently in selected districts and operate undercover to gather intelligence and clamp down on illegal mining activities.

“The NAIMOS deployment has been changed. We are working on intelligence-led permanent deployment where personnel will be stationed in districts and operate undercover,” he stated.

Mr. Schandorf acknowledged that illegal mining remains a major national challenge that cannot be resolved in the short term.

He explained that the situation has worsened significantly over the past eight years, making the fight more complex and difficult to tackle quickly.

“Galamsey did not start today, and it is not something that can be ended immediately. The level of destruction is massive, and it is still a national crisis,” he said.

He stressed that due to the complexity of the issue, authorities are unable to provide a clear timeline for completely ending illegal mining.

Mr. Schandorf further disclosed that enforcement efforts are often complicated by social and political pressures, including interventions by influential individuals on behalf of suspects.

“Sometimes when people are arrested, others come to plead on their behalf, including pastors and chiefs. This makes the situation very complex,” he noted.

He also assured that government remains committed to intensifying the fight against illegal mining and protecting the country’s natural resources.

Galamsey: Fight not aggressive enough – Prof Boadi https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-fight-not-aggressive-enough-prof-boadi/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 11:03:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655390 The Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Prof. Isaac Boadi, has said that government efforts to tackle illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, are not forceful enough to address the scale of environmental and economic damage being caused.

Speaking on JoyNews AM Show on Friday, April 24, Prof. Boadi said the current administration’s response lacks the urgency required to effectively deal with the menace.

He pointed to findings presented at a press conference organised by his institute at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), which detailed the extent of destruction to Ghana’s natural resources.

“The commitment or effort of this administration, for me, has not been aggressive enough in the fight against galamsey,” he said.

Prof. Boadi highlighted the severe environmental impact of illegal mining, noting that between 50 and 70 per cent of Ghana’s water bodies have been contaminated.

He also expressed concern about the financial implications, stating that the country continues to lose significant revenue due to unchecked galamsey activities.

According to him, the Ghana Water Company has already indicated that it is increasingly difficult to treat water for public consumption due to pollution from illegal mining.

He further referenced comments by the President, who has acknowledged that individuals linked to his own party, as well as some traditional leaders, are involved in galamsey.

“If a president makes such a statement, it tells you the fight is beyond him,” Prof. Boadi noted.

He also criticised civil society organisations (CSOs), describing them as the “voice of conscience”, for what he said was their relative silence on the issue compared to their previous activism.

He observed that many of these organisations had previously pressured past administrations, including calls for a state of emergency, but appear less vocal under the current circumstances.
While reiterating that he did not support calls for a state of emergency in the past and still holds that position, he questioned what alternative measures are being pursued to address the problem.

“The point is, what are the other mechanisms or solutions that we have to solve this problem? Will the declaration of a state of emergency give the zeal that we are talking about?” he asked.

Prof. Boadi stressed that the fight against galamsey requires deliberate, visible and sustained action, urging government and stakeholders to demonstrate stronger commitment.

He concluded that, beyond rhetoric, practical and consistent measures are needed to protect the country’s natural resources.

EPA warns mining firms over galamsey in concessions, threatens sanctions https://www.adomonline.com/epa-warns-mining-firms-over-galamsey-in-concessions-threatens-sanctions/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 12:40:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655019 The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a strong warning to mining companies, stating that failure to prevent illegal mining activities within their concessions will attract strict regulatory sanctions.

In a press release dated April 23, 2026, the Authority reaffirmed its mandate under the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 and related regulations, stressing that all licensed operators are legally required to protect the environmental integrity of their concession areas.

The EPA expressed concern over the increasing incidence of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, within legally acquired concessions, noting that the trend is worsening environmental degradation across the country.

It cited major impacts including pollution of rivers and water bodies, destruction of forest reserves, and widespread land degradation, warning that such developments undermine national environmental protection efforts and lawful mining operations.

To address the situation, the Authority has directed all mining companies to take immediate action by tightening security within their concessions, implementing effective monitoring and surveillance systems, and promptly reporting any illegal activities to state authorities.

Mining firms have also been reminded to strictly adhere to all conditions tied to their environmental permits, including approved Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Management Plans, while ensuring pollution prevention within their operational zones.

The EPA cautioned that failure to comply will be treated as a breach of permit conditions and could result in sanctions such as suspension or revocation of environmental permits, fines, and joint enforcement actions with security agencies.

As part of efforts to strengthen compliance, the Authority announced a nationwide monitoring exercise across all mining concessions, scheduled to begin on May 10, 2026.

The exercise will assess adherence to environmental standards, with companies urged to ensure full compliance ahead of the inspections.

The EPA reiterated its commitment to enforcing environmental laws and called on mining firms to support national efforts to combat illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural resources.

Paediatric Society urges Mahama to declare galamsey public health emergency https://www.adomonline.com/paediatric-society-urges-mahama-to-declare-galamsey-public-health-emergency/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 07:23:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654846 The Paediatric Society of Ghana has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to treat illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, as a national public health and security emergency, warning of its devastating impact on children.

In a statement issued to mark Earth Day on April 22, 2026, the Society described galamsey as a “slow, silent assault on the Ghanaian child,” citing growing scientific evidence of its harmful effects on human health and the environment.

From a paediatric and public health perspective, the Society warned that illegal mining is contaminating water bodies and food systems with toxic heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic, exposing children to serious health risks.

It noted that prenatal exposure to mercury has been linked to irreversible brain damage, reduced IQ, and neurodevelopmental disorders, while polluted water sources are increasing the burden of infections, chronic diseases, and malnutrition among children.

The Society further stressed that environmental degradation caused by galamsey is worsening poverty, food insecurity, and displacement—conditions that disproportionately affect children and threaten their long-term wellbeing.

Drawing parallels with historical injustices, the group cautioned that while the transatlantic slave trade deprived generations of Africans of their future, galamsey risks doing the same through environmental destruction and loss of human potential.

The Paediatric Society is therefore calling on the President to elevate the fight against galamsey to a national emergency and lead a coordinated, science-driven response involving the health, environment, security, and education sectors.

It also urged government to enforce strict protection of water bodies and forest reserves, invest in child-focused environmental health monitoring systems, and prioritise early detection and treatment of conditions such as heavy metal toxicity.

Additionally, the Society called on Ghana to champion the issue globally, framing environmental destruction of this nature within the context of crimes against humanity.

The group pledged its readiness to support government with technical expertise, research, and advocacy to safeguard the health and future of Ghanaian children.

Coalition urges NPA to cut fuel supply to illegal miners to curb galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/coalition-urges-npa-to-cut-fuel-supply-to-illegal-miners-to-curb-galamsey/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 14:36:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654585 A coalition of civil society organisations is calling on the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to take decisive action against illegal mining by restricting fuel supplies to galamsey operators.

In a petition dated April 18, 2026, and addressed to the Chief Executive of the NPA, Edudzi Tamakloe, the Coalition Against Galamsey, Ghana, argued that illegal mining continues to thrive largely due to steady access to diesel, which powers excavators used in forest reserves and water bodies.

“If we are to save our water bodies, forests, and the health of our people from this ecocide, we must cut the supply lines,” the coalition stated.

The group noted that despite efforts to control the importation of excavators, an estimated 7,000 untracked machines remain in operation across mining areas, sustained by what it described as unchecked fuel supply chains.

According to the coalition, diesel serves as the “lifeblood” of illegal mining, stressing that cutting access to fuel would significantly weaken such operations.

Led by convenor Kenneth Ashigbey, the group also raised concerns about the unusually high concentration of fuel stations in galamsey-prone communities. It said some remote mining areas appear to have more fuel outlets per capita than major urban centres like Accra and Tema.

“It is evident that these stations exist primarily to service illegal mining,” the petition stated, alleging that some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are failing to enforce Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements for bulk fuel purchases.

The coalition further referenced provisions in the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by Act 995, warning that individuals who facilitate illegal mining activities could face up to 25 years in prison.

It is therefore demanding urgent regulatory measures from the NPA, including data-driven audits of fuel distribution in mining hotspots, revocation of licences of non-compliant OMCs, stricter enforcement of KYC protocols, and enhanced collaboration with security agencies to track suspicious fuel movements.

The group also called for the prosecution of directors of companies found complicit, as well as increased enforcement of environmental protection laws.

“We cannot allow the environment to be murdered for profit,” the coalition said. “While we support legal, registered small-scale mining, we must starve illegal miners of the one resource they cannot do without — fuel.”

The coalition maintains that targeting fuel supply networks could significantly disrupt illegal mining.

“If we cut the fuel, we cut the lifeline. If we cut the lifeline, we save Ghana.”

Illegal mining pollution disrupts river baptisms — Church of Pentecost turns to rubber pools https://www.adomonline.com/illegal-mining-pollution-disrupts-river-baptisms-church-of-pentecost-turns-to-rubber-pools/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 14:09:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654568 The Church of Pentecost says rising pollution of Ghana’s water bodies, largely driven by illegal mining activities, is increasingly disrupting its traditional river baptism practices, forcing the church to adopt alternative methods, including the use of synthetic rubber pools.

The Chairman of the worldwide church, Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye, made this known in his State of the Church Address at the 48th General Conference of the Church of Pentecost, noting that environmental degradation in mining communities is now affecting core religious ordinances.

He explained that the contamination of rivers has made them unsafe for baptisms in several mining-affected areas across the country.

“The extensive pollution of water bodies due to illegal mining has hampered traditional water baptism in some mining communities, necessitating a shift to synthetic rubber pools in several districts to carry out the ordinance,” he said.

Apostle Nyamekye further pointed to the wider socio-economic consequences of climate variability, saying shifting rainfall patterns and the decline of cocoa production are affecting livelihoods, especially among church members engaged in farming and fishing.

Despite these challenges, he stressed that the Church continues to expand its evangelistic and social outreach programmes nationwide.

He revealed that by the end of 2025, the Church had established skills development centres in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region and Essam in the Western North Region to equip young people with employable skills.

According to him, the Church has also engaged master craftsmen to train additional apprentices as part of efforts to tackle unemployment.

He added that several projects, including health facilities, prison camps and other infrastructure, have been initiated, completed, and handed over to the state under the Church’s social responsibility agenda.

Apostle Nyamekye, however, reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to its mission, saying it remains focused on soul-winning and community development despite the environmental and economic challenges confronting communities.

4 foreigners, 3 Ghanaians arrested in illegal mining raid along Boin River https://www.adomonline.com/4-foreigners-3-ghanaians-arrested-in-illegal-mining-raid-along-boin-river/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 12:28:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650752 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested seven individuals, including four Chinese nationals and three Ghanaians, during an operation targeting illegal mining activities along the Boin River in the Aowin District of the Western North Region.

The exercise, carried out by the NAIMOS Enchi Task Force on Saturday, April 11, 2026, between 1400 and 1630 hours, followed intelligence reports of ongoing illegal mining in the area.

Officers who moved to the site observed active operations, including the pumping and washing of minerals directly within the river, raising concerns about environmental degradation and water pollution.

During a search of a wooden structure located about 45 metres from the mining site, the team retrieved three pump-action guns and 37 cartridges.

They also recovered two excavator control monitors believed to be linked to the illegal activities. Structures suspected of supporting the operations were dismantled and set on fire.

All seven suspects were arrested at the scene without resistance. The foreign nationals were identified as Lu Weiykng, Zhou Xuanbai, Tan Zhongqiang and Zhu Jiping, while the Ghanaian suspects were named as David Done, Santos Adaboo and Naya Sampana.

The Ghanaian suspects have since been handed over to the Boinso Police Station for further investigations, as authorities continue efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities across the country.

Community mining standoff in Ahafo-Ano North, NDC executives seek urgent government action https://www.adomonline.com/community-mining-standoff-in-ahafo-ano-north-ndc-executives-seek-urgent-government-action/ Wed, 08 Apr 2026 19:40:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2649251 Tension is escalating in parts of the Ahafo-Ano North District of the Ashanti Region over an alleged forceful takeover of a community mining site.

The affected site at Mfante serves as a major source of livelihood for over 5,000 people. However, it has reportedly been seized by individuals claiming to be operatives of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) without proper explanation or identification, leaving many workers stranded.

Residents of the affected communities recently accused executive members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of collaborating with NAIMOS officials in taking over the mining site.

The NDC constituency executives have denied any involvement in the seizure. Addressing the matter at a press conference, Ahafo-Ano North NDC Communications Officer, Akakpo Francis Elikplim, stressed that the party’s executive had no role in the issue and called for swift government intervention to restore normalcy.

“The mining concession has been in the possession of community members for a very long time. It is therefore worrying that some individuals or groups are attempting to take it over under the NDC administration,” he said.

He noted that the livelihoods of many families are at stake and urged authorities to ensure that affected community members, who voted overwhelmingly for the ruling NDC government, are allowed to return to work without further delay.

“During the election, we campaigned here and, for the first time, received a significant number of votes, surpassing the NPP in these mining communities. It is therefore not fair to take away their only means of livelihood,” Mr. Akakpo added.

He appealed to President John Mahama and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to step in and resolve the situation, which has affected several communities, including Mfante, Subriso, Asikam, Numasua, and Fawobotoso.

Mr. Akakpo warned that if authorities fail to act, the constituency executive will collaborate with residents to stage demonstrations against the government.

Displaced workers expressed deep concern about their future, stating they are stranded and uncertain about what lies ahead. They made a passionate appeal to the government for timely and fair intervention, which they say is crucial to preventing further escalation.

Former AG Godfred Dame demands retraction from Kwakye Ofosu over galamsey claims https://www.adomonline.com/former-ag-godfred-dame-demands-retraction-from-kwakye-ofosu-over-galamsey-claims/ Tue, 31 Mar 2026 15:30:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646485 Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame has issued a formal demand to Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu to retract and apologise for what he describes as “false, malicious and defamatory” statements made against him.

In a strongly worded letter dated March 12, 2026, Mr Dame accused Mr Kwakye Ofosu of making unsubstantiated allegations during an appearance on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme on October 10, 2025.

According to the former Attorney-General, the minister alleged that he had deliberately ignored a police report implicating Akonta Mining Company Limited in illegal mining activities.

Akonta Mining Limited is owned by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Minister, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wuntomi), who is currently standing trial for various mining infractions.

Mr Dame rejected the claims, insisting that no such report was ever presented to him during his tenure in office between 2021 and 2025.

The letter cited a Right to Information (RTI) request response from the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice, which confirmed that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) did not submit any docket on Akonta Mining to the Attorney-General’s office between 2022 and 2024. It further clarified that the only related docket was received on September 15, 2025, after his tenure.

Mr Dame described the allegations as “sinister, reckless and malicious”, arguing that they were calculated to damage his reputation and portray him as complicit in illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

He also took issue with comments made by Mr Kwakye Ofosu suggesting he was “not fit for the job” and had been complicit through inaction. The former Attorney-General maintained that such statements went beyond acceptable public commentary and constituted serious defamation.

“It goes without saying that your allegations about me were not only false but sinister, reckless and malicious,” portions of the letter stated, adding that the claims had been widely circulated across media platforms, thereby amplifying their impact.

Mr Dame further emphasised his professional record, highlighting over two decades of legal practice and his role in representing Ghana in international forums, including the United Nations and ECOWAS. He argued that the allegations unjustly undermined his career and public standing.

As part of his demands, Mr Dame has given Mr Kwakye Ofosu seven days to issue a full retraction and apology and to remove all related publications from online platforms.

Failure to comply, the letter implied, could result in legal action.

The development adds a new dimension to the ongoing political exchanges over accountability in the fight against illegal mining, an issue that continues to dominate Ghana’s national discourse.

Gov’t intensifies fight against galamsey, seeks stronger CSO collaboration — Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/govt-intensifies-fight-against-galamsey-seeks-stronger-cso-collaboration-mahama/ Tue, 31 Mar 2026 10:15:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646313 President John Dramani Mahama has announced that government is intensifying efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, while emphasising the need for stronger collaboration with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

Speaking during an engagement with CSOs on Monday, March 30, the President acknowledged the pivotal role civil society has played in environmental protection and climate advocacy.

He noted that government is stepping up measures to tackle galamsey and ensure the sustainable management of Ghana’s natural resources.

“Civil society has led in environmental protection, climate advocacy, and the fight against illegal mining. Government is intensifying efforts to combat galamsey, promote sustainable land and water use, and strengthen environmental governance.

“We look forward to closer collaboration in safeguarding our natural resources for future generations. Let me affirm that civil society is not an adversary of government. Indeed, we are partners in nation building,” he said.

Galamsey: Halt small-scale mining for one year – Hopeson Adorye https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-halt-small-scale-mining-for-one-year-hopeson-adorye/ Tue, 31 Mar 2026 09:57:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646293 The Director of Field Operations for the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, has backed a proposal to halt all small-scale mining for one year as a decisive step to tackle illegal mining, insisting that such a move could help restore degraded lands and polluted water bodies.

Speaking on JoyNews AM Show on Tuesday, March 31, Mr Adorye said while the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) is making some progress, a more drastic and structured intervention is needed to deal with the scale of the galamsey crisis.

“I think they are doing a good job,” he said of NAIMOS, but quickly pointed to what he believes is a more effective long-term solution. “If this government wants to do something substantial in the fight against galamsey, they should visit the GTP by Alan Kojo Kyerematen.”

He was referring to a proposal by former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, which suggests a temporary but total suspension of small-scale mining activities excluding major companies like Gold Fields while redirecting miners into land reclamation efforts.

According to Mr Adorye, the approach would not only halt environmental destruction but also provide alternative livelihoods for those engaged in illegal mining. “No matter what, apart from the giants… all other miners should be put to a halt. One complete year,” he explained.

He added that under the plan, government would employ the same miners to rehabilitate degraded lands, paying them daily wages comparable to what they earn from mining. “Government says, ‘Okay, I’m going to pay you that money. Don’t go and dig. Let us plant trees,’” he said.

Mr Adorye stressed that this intervention could reverse the damage caused to water bodies across the country. “By that time, you reclaim the land. I mean, the water bodies too will resurrect. The dead water bodies will resurrect,” he stated.

He further explained that after the one-year moratorium, the sector could be reopened under stricter regulations, including proper vetting, licensing, and mandatory training for miners to ensure compliance with environmental standards.

His comments come at a time when pressure is mounting on government to scale up efforts against illegal mining, which continues to threaten Ghana’s forests and water resources.

Stakeholders in Ghana, led prominently by the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining and figures like Ing Kenneth Ashigbey, are calling for a significant increase in funding and logistical support for NAIMOS. While the secretariat has reportedly seized nearly 100 excavators, this figure remains small compared to the estimated 7,000 machines still operating illegally.

Civil society organisations, including A Rocha Ghana, have also proposed alternative funding strategies to strengthen the fight. These include diverting a portion of Ghana Gold Board proceeds to NAIMOS and auctioning seized equipment to fund enforcement activities.

Beyond funding, stakeholders are advocating the deployment of advanced technology such as drones and satellite surveillance to monitor the 22 identified illegal mining hotspots, reducing risks to personnel on the ground.

Operational difficulties continue to hamper NAIMOS efforts, with reports of frequent vehicle breakdowns in forest reserves and calls for specialised all-terrain equipment and air support. There are also concerns about political interference and the influence of powerful individuals allegedly undermining enforcement.

Advocates argue that granting NAIMOS full financial and operational independence could help sustain gains made so far and ensure a more coordinated and effective crackdown on illegal mining.

NAIMOS must be given adequate resources to tackle galamsey – Ken Ashigbey https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-must-be-given-adequate-resources-to-tackle-galamsey-ken-ashigbey/ Tue, 31 Mar 2026 07:00:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646207 The Convenor of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Ing Kenneth Ashigbey, has urged the government to provide the National Inter-Ministerial Committee on Small-Scale Mining (NAIMOS) with sufficient resources to tackle the persistent threat of illegal mining across Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, March 30, he bemoaned the ongoing canker.

Although Mr Ashigbey acknowledged NAIMOS’s efforts, including the seizure of 94 excavators, destruction of over 3,000 changfans, and the arrest of more than 200 individuals, many of them Chinese nationals, he says more needs to be done.

“While these actions are commendable, the scale of illegal mining remains massive,” Ashigbey said. “With over 7,000 small-scale excavators in operation, seizing just 94 is a drop in the ocean. NAIMOS needs more resources to deploy effectively to the 22 hotspots identified nationwide.”

He noted that areas such as Obuasi and Duaso continue to witness illegal mining in rivers, forests, and along roadsides, highlighting the urgent need for local authorities, including District and Municipal Chief Executives, to enforce regulations.

Mr Ashigbey warned of the environmental consequences, with over 50 forests under threat and waterways being destroyed.

He called on the Minister of Finance and the President to prioritise funding and support for NAIMOS, stressing that the fight against galamsey is critical for protecting Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.

“Without adequate resources, NAIMOS cannot succeed, and the destruction of our forests and water bodies will continue unabated,” he noted.

Forestry Commission trains 800 forest guards to intensify galamsey fight https://www.adomonline.com/forestry-commission-trains-800-forest-guards-to-intensify-galamsey-fight/ Sun, 29 Mar 2026 10:02:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645499 Accra — Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, is being stepped up with the training of over 800 Forest Guards to protect the country’s forests and water bodies.

The Forestry Commission, in collaboration with the Seth Anthony Jungle Warfare Training School at Akyem Achiase, has rolled out a specialised training programme aimed at equipping personnel with the skills and endurance required to confront environmental threats.

The guards, drawn from the Eastern, Ashanti, and Western Regions, underwent intensive field training designed to prepare them for operations in forest zones where illegal mining activities are prevalent.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Commanding Officer of the training school, Lieutenant Colonel Speratus Anglaawine Baninyeni, explained that the programme was structured to build both the physical resilience and tactical capacity of participants.

He noted that the training enables personnel to live and operate in forest environments for extended periods while carrying out enforcement duties to safeguard natural resources.

The initiative forms part of broader national efforts to curb the destruction of forest reserves and water bodies caused by illegal mining activities, which continue to pose serious environmental and economic risks.

Also addressing the gathering, Ashanti Regional Forest Services Division Manager, Isaac Noble Eshun, described the training as a critical step toward strengthening environmental protection measures and ensuring the sustainable management of Ghana’s forests.

He emphasised that the fight against galamsey requires collective responsibility and urged all Ghanaians to support efforts aimed at preserving the country’s natural resources.

The Forestry Commission believes the deployment of the newly trained guards will significantly boost on-the-ground enforcement and help restore degraded forest areas across affected regions.

Take politics out of galamsey fight – Lands Ministry urges unified approach https://www.adomonline.com/take-politics-out-of-galamsey-fight-lands-ministry-urges-unified-approach/ Thu, 26 Mar 2026 09:57:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2644339 The Media Relations Officer at the Lands Ministry, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, has called for the removal of political influence in the fight against illegal mining, warning that continued politicisation could undermine efforts to address the problem.

Speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM following a briefing by NAIMOS, he stressed that Ghana has reached a point where the galamsey fight must be approached as a national issue rather than a political one.

According to him, while previous efforts may have been influenced by political considerations, it is now crucial to depoliticise the fight to achieve meaningful results.

“We have reached a point where we must take politics out of the galamsey fight,” he added.

He noted that illegal mining activities are not limited to members of a single political party, pointing out that individuals from both the NPP and NDC are involved. This, he said, creates a shared political interest that makes it difficult to effectively tackle the issue.

Paa Kwesi Schandorf emphasised that for NAIMOS to succeed, all parties must acknowledge the harm caused by illegal mining and commit to following the legal and regulatory frameworks governing mining activities.

He maintained that only a unified, non-partisan approach will ensure lasting success in the fight against galamsey.

‘We don’t pursue illegal miners based on party colours’ – NAIMOS https://www.adomonline.com/we-dont-pursue-illegal-miners-based-on-party-colours-naimos/ Thu, 26 Mar 2026 09:28:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2644338 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has rejected claims that its operations are politically motivated, emphasizing that its focus remains solely on tackling illegal mining.

Addressing concerns about alleged interference, the Director of Operations, Col. Dominic Buah, stressed that the Secretariat deals with offenders based on their actions, not political affiliations.

“When we get to a galamsey site, we see you as an individual. Let’s not dwell on politics. Let’s focus on the people perpetrating crime. That is it; that’s how we see galamseyers — we don’t see them by their party colouration,” he stated.

Col. Buah made the remarks during the NAIMOS Editors’ Forum and Quarterly Press Briefing on Wednesday, March 25.

Calls for Logistical Support

At the event, Col. Buah appealed for increased logistical and financial support to sustain and expand operations. He highlighted that resource constraints, particularly a shortage of vehicles, continue to affect the Secretariat’s work.

“We need vehicles, we need money, we need all the resources,” he said.

He also encouraged private sector organisations and civil society groups to support the anti-galamsey effort, assuring transparency in acknowledging contributions.

“Corporate bodies who want to support, why not? We will acknowledge you and make it known to the whole nation,” he added.

Despite these challenges, he commended the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for its continued support over the past months.

Warning Against Violent Resistance

Col. Buah further cautioned illegal miners against resorting to violence during enforcement operations, noting growing resistance in some communities.

“We will not stand and watch anyone use weapons against us. We are better trained in weapons and warn that anybody who dares, NAIMOS will deal with them ruthlessly,” he said.

“It is a problem we are trying to address, and we have the right to self-defence. Let no galamseyer forget that. If you go to the field with weapons and try to fire, a lot more will be at you,” he added.

Reiterating the Secretariat’s stance, Col. Buah urged the public to avoid politicising the fight against illegal mining, emphasizing that NAIMOS remains focused on enforcing the law and protecting the environment.

Galamsey: NAIMOS seizes 94 excavators, arrests 237 https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-naimos-seizes-94-excavators-arrests-237/ Wed, 25 Mar 2026 14:15:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2644001 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) says it has made significant progress in its ongoing clampdown on illegal mining, with dozens of arrests and equipment seizures recorded nationwide.

Speaking at the NAIMOS Editors’ Forum and quarterly press briefing at the Press Centre in Accra on Wednesday, March 25, the Director of Operations, Col. Dominic Buah, said 94 excavators have been confiscated while nearly 3,000 changfans have been destroyed.

“94 excavators so far have been seized and secured in our location. Almost 3,000 changfans destroyed. Arrests: We have 237. The majority of them are foreigners,” he revealed.

Col. Buah explained that the Secretariat uses a “strike rate” system to assess the effectiveness of its operations, which he said currently stands at 87.7 percent.

“Then you have seen a strike rate of 87.7. Anytime we move to the field and meet one of the key parameters—seizures, arrests, and destruction—we count it as a positive,” he said.

He noted that due to logistical constraints, some excavators found at illegal mining sites are immobilised, a move he says is helping reduce the presence of heavy equipment at such sites.

“I must tell you that in the galamsey sites, the number of excavators is going down drastically,” he added.

Despite the progress, Col. Buah acknowledged that illegal miners continue to adapt and find new ways to evade enforcement.

“Unfortunately, the galamseyers are also smart. They keep coming up with new ideas on how to fix the excavators,” he noted.

He further disclosed that NAIMOS has partnered with the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation to remove and recycle scrap metal from polluted water bodies.

He said the collaboration is ongoing along the Ankobra River, where damaged equipment is being collected and repurposed.

According to him, seized equipment, including pumping machines, is being redirected for agricultural use through the Ministry of Agriculture.

“We want to ensure that they are not sent back to the galamsey site but repurposed for good use,” he said.

Col. Buah also revealed that confiscated vehicles are being reassigned for official use after legal clearance.

On security concerns, he disclosed that at least 59 weapons have been retrieved from illegal miners, describing the situation as a serious threat.

He recounted an incident in which a soldier was injured during an operation but is currently recovering.

Col. Buah warned illegal miners against using weapons against security personnel, stressing that NAIMOS is prepared to defend itself while continuing its operations to eliminate illegal mining.

NAIMOS reveals majority of galamsey arrests involve Chinese nationals https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-reveals-majority-of-galamsey-arrests-involve-chinese-nationals/ Wed, 25 Mar 2026 12:53:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2643973 The Director of Operations at the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), Dominic Buah, has revealed that most arrests in the fight against illegal mining involve foreign nationals, particularly Chinese citizens.

Speaking at the NAIMOS Editors’ Forum and quarterly press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, March 25, he said a significant number of individuals apprehended during anti-galamsey operations are foreigners.

“I talked about arrests, and the majority of them are Chinese,” he disclosed.

Col. Buah noted that even the Chinese Ambassador has expressed concern over the scale of involvement of his nationals in illegal mining activities in Ghana.

He warned that the activities of these illegal miners are causing severe environmental damage, including the destruction of lands, forests and water bodies.

He also cited the arrest of other foreign nationals, including 32 Nigerians picked up during an operation in Osino, stressing the security implications of the trend.

According to him, NAIMOS is working closely with national security agencies to verify the status of arrested foreigners, who are then handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further action.

He explained that while some suspects are prosecuted, others are deported, adding that in cases involving Chinese nationals, the Chinese Embassy is engaged, often leading to blacklisting.

Col. Buah reaffirmed NAIMOS’ commitment to transparency, noting that regular updates on arrests and seizures will be made public as part of efforts to ensure accountability in the fight against illegal mining.

NAIMOS urges sustainable mining to tackle galamsey risks https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-urges-sustainable-mining-to-tackle-galamsey-risks/ Wed, 25 Mar 2026 12:04:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2643921 The Director of Operations at the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), Dominic Buah, has stressed the need for sustainable mining practices to address the environmental and health risks associated with illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking at the NAIMOS Editors’ Forum and quarterly press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, March 25, he said mining cannot be stopped entirely, describing it as a critical part of Ghana’s economy.

“If anybody told you that you can stop mining in Ghana, I don’t believe it… mining will go on,” he stated.

He, however, emphasised that efforts must focus on sustainability, particularly reducing the health and environmental dangers posed by illegal mining activities.

Col. Buah outlined three key pillars guiding NAIMOS’ operations—prevention, restoration, and sustainability—aimed at addressing long-standing challenges in the sector.

He identified poor coordination among institutions as a major setback in previous anti-galamsey efforts, noting that it led to duplication of work and inefficient use of resources.

According to him, the establishment of NAIMOS was intended to provide a central coordinating body to streamline operations nationwide.

He added that although the Secretariat has been operational for just over 10 months and has recorded progress, continuous engagement with stakeholders, especially the media, remains critical to assessing performance and shaping future strategies.

Col. Buah said the forum was designed to strengthen collaboration with the media in tackling illegal mining and ensuring a sustainable path forward.

Ahanta West: Assembly Member arrested over alleged involvement in galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/ahanta-west-assembly-member-arrested-over-alleged-involvement-in-galamsey/ Wed, 25 Mar 2026 08:12:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2643811 The Assembly Member for the Sese Electoral Area in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region, Samuel Doomson, has been arrested for alleged involvement in galamsey activities in the area.

He was invited by the Ahanta West District Police Command to respond to allegations of illegal mining.

Reports indicate that Mr. Doomson was subsequently handed over to the Western Regional Police Command in Sekondi for further interrogation.

According to sources, he was arrested by National Security operatives on Tuesday afternoon while riding a motorcycle through the municipal capital.

For the past year, the local assembly has cautioned assembly members and traditional authorities over allegations of illegal mining. The Municipal Chief Executive for Ahanta West, Ebenezer Kofi Aidoo, has vowed to intensify the fight against the menace.

Clarifying the arrest, Mr. Aidoo said there is evidence supporting long-held allegations against the accused.

“Now we have evidence he is involved in galamsey. There are audio, video, and pictures to prove it,” he said.

Doomson is currently being processed for court.

Rivers regaining natural colour as galamsey fight shows results – Ashanti Security Coordinator https://www.adomonline.com/rivers-regaining-natural-colour-as-galamsey-fight-shows-results-ashanti-security-coordinator/ Tue, 24 Mar 2026 13:09:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2643556 The Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Captain (Rtd.) John Kwame Jabari, says government efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, are beginning to yield results.

Speaking on the sidelines of a TEIN USTED-K Freshers’ Orientation and Akwaaba event, he noted that there is a visible improvement in the colour of rivers that were previously polluted by illegal mining activities.

“We’re seeing a noticeable change in the colour of our water bodies, and that’s a clear indication that our efforts are bearing fruit,” he said.

He attributed the progress to the work of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat, which has been conducting operations against illegal miners along rivers and in forest reserves.

“NAIMOS officials are working tirelessly to clear illegal miners from water bodies and forest reserves. We are destroying dredges and machinery, and we will continue to do so until we eliminate the menace,” he stated.

Captain Jabari revealed that military personnel have been deployed to forest reserves to prevent illegal mining activities.

He also claimed that previous permissions granted for mining in forest reserves have been revoked under the current administration through the repeal of Legislative Instrument 2462.

“We are taking steps to rectify past mistakes and safeguard our forests and water bodies. The law is clear—mining is prohibited in forest reserves, water bodies, and areas adjacent to roads,” he added.

The Security Coordinator reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining the fight against galamsey, stressing strong political will to protect the environment.

Meanwhile, he declined to comment on President John Dramani Mahama’s remarks suggesting that some members of the ruling party may be involved in illegal mining, saying he could not confirm or deny the claims.

‘Galamsey is not going anywhere’- Senyo Hosi calls for tech-driven regularisation https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-is-not-going-anywhere-senyo-hosi-calls-for-tech-driven-regularisation/ Sat, 21 Mar 2026 18:51:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2642956 Convener, OneGhana Movement and Trustee of Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, Senyo Hosi, has warned that Ghana must confront the hard truth that illegal mining (galamsey) cannot simply be eradicated, urging a shift toward regulation, technology, and pragmatic policy solutions.

According to him, efforts to eliminate galamsey outright are unrealistic given the powerful economic and political forces sustaining it.

“We have to get the reality that Galamsey is not going anywhere. That is what I see. We have to find a way to correct the externalities around that,” he stated in an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, March 21.

He explained that the sector has become deeply embedded in Ghana’s socio-economic structure, providing livelihoods for thousands, while also feeding into political financing and broader economic stability.https://www.youtube.com/embed/yrmf5546Msk?si=zkdbaoKRzz3NkQlx

Mr. Hosi noted that even government faces a dilemma, as slowing gold production could trigger macroeconomic consequences.

“Gold production drops, and then you’re dealing with macroeconomic problems. Politicians are also being funded by actors within this space,” he added.

Shift From Elimination to Control

Rather than continued crackdowns, Mr. Hosi is proposing a strategic pivot—one that focuses on managing and formalising the sector. He argued that the current approach risks failure because it ignores the economic incentives driving participation in illegal mining.

“There’s no going back. The question is: how do we rationalise what is happening?” he asked.

Low Recovery, High Losses

A key concern he raised is inefficiency in current small-scale mining operations. According to him, galamsey activities are only yielding about 30% gold recovery, meaning the country is losing significant value from its natural resources.

By contrast, large-scale mining operations achieve 85% to 95% recovery rates.

Technology as the Game-Changer

Mr. Hosi believes technology holds the key to transforming the sector. He proposed deploying modern mining techniques to: Improve recovery rates, reduce environmental damage and increase state revenue.

“Can we use technology to correct the losses and move closer to large-scale recovery levels?” he suggested.

Formalisation Over Criminalisation

Beyond technology, he is calling for the full regularisation of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). This would involve: Making operators compliant with regulations, providing structured support and oversight and integrating them into the formal economy.

According to him, this approach allows government to maintain control while preserving livelihoods.
“Let it be fully compliant, supported with technology, so government can guide the sector while people do it properly,” he said.

Environmental Concerns Still Critical

While acknowledging that solutions like water-cleaning technologies may help, Mr. Hosi stressed they are not sufficient on their own. He warned that harmful practices, including the use of chemicals like cyanide, must be better regulated—not ignored.

A Call for Policy Realism

Mr. Hosi concluded that Ghana must abandon idealistic approaches and adopt realistic, balanced strategies that align policy with on-the-ground realities. “Technology and policy must be brought together to correct this. Doing nothing is not going to help anybody,” he cautioned.

Applauding gov’t for galamsey admission is hypocritical – Miracles Aboagye https://www.adomonline.com/applauding-govt-for-galamsey-admission-is-hypocritical-miracles-aboagye/ Sat, 21 Mar 2026 14:53:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2642922 Director of Communications for the Bawumia campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has criticised commentators and members of the public who have applauded the government for acknowledging that members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been involved in galamsey (illegal mining).

His comments come after some civil society groups commended President John Mahama for admitting that illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, involves actors across political, traditional, and even his own networks, warning that the fight against the practice will be challenging but must continue.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, March 21, Mr Aboagye described such praise as “hypocritical”, pointing out that the information is not new.

“The president has admitted something that all of us have always known. Even when we were in government, I highlighted that NDC members were involved in galamsey,” he said.

He argued that while acknowledgement of wrongdoing is important, it is not a substitute for action. He noted that since taking office, the government has introduced only one new measure against illegal mining, while most interventions, including Operation Vanguard and military arrests in the forest, were already in place.

“Galamsey is a serious issue. Reading the manifesto, the government promised specific actions. My question is: if you already knew about it, what have you done about it since taking office?” he asked.

Using a household analogy, he emphasised accountability: “If I know that the beef I left in my fridge was stolen by my son, I won’t go complain to my neighbour. I deal with the person responsible. That’s the approach we need here.”

Mr Aboagye concluded by calling on the government to take decisive action against illegal mining rather than receiving applause for merely admitting what is already public knowledge.

Quarry operations in Dumansua not galamsey – NADMO clarifies https://www.adomonline.com/quarry-operations-in-dumansua-not-galamsey-nadmo-clarifies/ Thu, 19 Mar 2026 11:10:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2642277 The Offinso South National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Director Mohammed Wiafe, has clarified that recent claims of galamsey activities in Dumansua are unfounded.

According to him, a site visit revealed that the area in question is rather a quarry site, with sand winning trucks passing through.

The quarry company has all the necessary permits from the Minerals Commission of Ghana and has compensated the community, he added.

Mr. Wiafe emphasized that quarrying is a legitimate activity distinct from illegal mining, with minimal environmental impact.

He urged the community to fact-check information before making allegations and appealed to the quarry company to fulfill its promise to construct a footbridge for the residents.

The NADMO Director stressed the need for cooperation between the company and the community for sustainable development.

The Forestry Commission at Offinso has also denied reports of ongoing illegal mining activities in Dumansua, stating that their monitoring efforts have not detected any such operations.

The Commission acknowledged that images and videos circulating on social media prompted them to investigate, but they found no evidence to support claims of illegal mining.

“We cannot guarantee an interview on this matter as it doesn’t fall within our enclave,” a Forestry Commission representative, Mr Nyamaa Ofosu said.

The Commission has directed inquiries to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Minerals Commission, which are responsible for regulating mining activities in the area.

The clarification comes amid concerns about the environmental impact of mining in the region.

The Forestry Commission emphasized its commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and urged the public to report any suspicious activities.

Since assuming office, DCE Ahenkora has spearheaded the Akyemansa Anti-Galamsey Taskforce, which she leads personally. The taskforce has seized over 300 changfang and pumping machines, 105 boats, and other mining equipment, and arrested more than 50 individuals involved in illegal mining activities.

Speaking to the media, DCE Ahenkora warned illegal miners to desist from polluting water bodies, emphasizing that the Assembly will not relent in protecting the environment.

“We will continue to fight until our rivers, farmlands, and communities are safe from the destructive effects of galamsey,” she said.

The taskforce operates in close collaboration with security agencies, including the Police, Blue Water Guards, and Niamos, achieving what the DCE rates as a 65% success rate in combating illegal mining.

George Gyasi, Operations Commander for Blue Water Guards in the district, confirmed that operations began officially on January 5, focusing on safeguarding water bodies along the Prah and Birim rivers.

He dismissed claims that confiscated equipment was returned to miners and reiterated the warning that violators will face consequences.

With these efforts, the Akyemansa District is positioning itself as a frontline in the battle against galamsey, aiming to curb environmental destruction and promote sustainable development in the region.

The application was filed by the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC), which argued that the planned protest could trigger unrest in the municipality.

According to court documents, the demonstration was being organised by a group of local leaders from Atwedie, including former Assembly Member Nana Baah Appenteng, Chairman of the Coalition of Atwedie Cocoa Farmers, Kofi Boateng, Assembly Member for the Atwedie Electoral Area Patrick Karikari Antwi, and Afia Korkor, a member of the coalition.

The organisers had earlier notified police of their intention to hold a peaceful protest against galamsey in the area.

Police in Juaso, in consultation with MUSEC, initially granted permission for the protest to proceed.

However, MUSEC later told the court that intelligence reports suggested the demonstration could degenerate into violence.

The security committee, therefore, asked the court to declare that the planned demonstration could bring chaos to the municipality and to restrain the organisers from proceeding with the event.

The court subsequently granted the interim injunction, temporarily halting the anti-galamsey demonstration while the matter is determined.

The organisers are expected to respond to the suit within eight days after being served with the writ.

Those in opposition are not doing galamsey — NPP MP https://www.adomonline.com/those-in-opposition-are-not-doing-galamsey-npp-mp/ Wed, 11 Mar 2026 11:25:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2639309 The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has called for stronger action against illegal mining, insisting that the fight against galamsey must start with individuals connected to the current government.

Speaking on UTV Ghana, he questioned why no high-profile individuals linked to illegal mining activities have faced prosecution.

“Who in opposition is doing galamsey today?” he asked, arguing that those involved in illegal mining are largely people associated with the governing administration.

Acquah noted that no top officials, including District or Municipal Chief Executives, have been held accountable for illegal mining activities. He also alleged that some individuals were issued receipts permitting them to engage in illegal mining, a practice that continues because it is not openly addressed.

“For us to see that the government is truly fighting galamsey, it has to start with its own people,” he stressed, calling on authorities to demonstrate seriousness in tackling the menace by holding their members accountable.

The MP further suggested that some individuals engage in illegal mining due to unmet expectations from the government, including hopes of securing jobs or appointments. However, he emphasized that a lack of employment opportunities should not justify environmental destruction.

He warned that water bodies, lands, and other natural resources being destroyed by illegal mining are irreplaceable and must be protected at all costs, noting that many prosecutions currently target small-scale operators while major offenders continue unchecked.

The suspects, including four females, were apprehended during an operation at Aburokyere, Bepotenten and Sukuumu in the Amansie Central District, where they were allegedly mining along the Oda River.

During the exercise, the task force seized 82 Changfan machines, 77 pumping machines and 21 motorbikes believed to have been used in the illegal mining operations. The team also destroyed 20 structures set up by the miners at the sites.

The operation was carried out by a team made up of 31 Rapid Response personnel, seven forest guards, two Forest Resource Management (FRM) personnel and one District Development Manager (DDM).

The Oda River, which gives life to the surrounding forest, is highly polluted, mainly by these Changfan operators, denying farmers clean water for farming purposes.

The pollution has also had serious consequences for local farmers who depend on the river for their farming activities. Many peasant farmers in the area are now unable to access clean water for irrigation, a situation that has forced several of them out of work.

GRA Customs seizes 560 suspected galamsey engines at Tema Port https://www.adomonline.com/gra-customs-seizes-560-suspected-galamsey-engines-at-tema-port/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 15:54:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637819 Officers of the Preventive Unit of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division have intercepted and seized 560 CHANG FANG diesel engines at the Golden Jubilee Terminal at Tema Port, in what authorities suspect were intended for illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) operations.

The seizure occurred during a routine cargo inspection after vigilant customs officers flagged the consignment for further examination.

Officials explained that the engines — powerful industrial diesel units commonly used to power water pumps and dredging equipment at illegal mining sites — were concealed within a container shipment believed to be destined for unlawful mining activities across parts of the country.

Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, Commissioner-General of the GRA, commended the officers involved for their integrity and commitment to protecting national interests.

“Some good behaviour like this from my officers is rewarding and must be recognised by Ghanaians. They chose national interest and preventive duty ahead of personal gains,” he said.

He added that a full investigation has been launched to identify the importer, clearing agents, and the intended destination of the engines.

“We will investigate the importer and the agents involved. Ghana’s ports will not be used as a gateway for equipment that fuels environmental destruction,” the Commissioner-General stated.

Authorities say the interception is part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on supply chains supporting illegal mining, which continues to threaten Ghana’s rivers, forests, and ecological stability.

Customs officials at Tema have intensified cargo screening as government agencies step up the fight against galamsey logistics networks operating through the country’s ports.

NAIMOS to begin 24-hour surveillance at galamsey flashpoints https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-to-begin-24-hour-surveillance-at-galamsey-flashpoints/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 08:18:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637597 The Lands Ministry has announced that the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) will begin full-scale, 24-hour surveillance at illegal mining hotspots across the country by the end of the first quarter, March.

Director of communications at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Paa Kwasi Schandorf, disclosed this in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, March 4.

Providing an update on recent activities, he said that NAIMOS has conducted three major operations within the past week, with further details expected to be released.

Beyond routine swoops in galamsey-prone communities, Mr Schandorf said the new strategy will focus on sustained, uninterrupted deployment at key flashpoints where illegal mining remains prevalent.

“What this means in practical terms is that NAIMOS personnel will be stationed permanently at these hotspots. They will not move in and out after operations but will remain there around the clock, like watchmen, to prevent illegal miners from returning,” he explained.

The move follows concerns that illegal miners often resume activities shortly after enforcement teams withdraw from affected areas.

According to the Ministry, while NAIMOS operations have been successful in dismantling sites, enforcement momentum is sometimes not sustained at the local level.

“When NAIMOS executes an operation, the expectation is that local enforcement agencies will maintain the pressure. However, in some instances, once NAIMOS leaves, illegal activities escalate again,” the Ministry noted.

To address this challenge, he added that the sector minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has authorised the full-scale deployment strategy. The Ministry of Finance has also made financial commitments to support the initiative.

Additionally, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Samuel Gyamfi, has provided assurances of institutional backing to ensure the rollout is effective.

The Lands Ministry expressed optimism that the sustained 24-hour presence will significantly reduce illegal mining activities and prevent the recurring cycle of operations followed by the return of offenders.

They ignored orders to vacate the site – Assemblyman speaks on Atta ne Atta galamsey tragedy [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/they-ignored-orders-to-vacate-the-site-assemblyman-speaks-on-atta-ne-atta-galamsey-tragedy-listen/ Mon, 02 Mar 2026 14:35:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636647 The Assemblyman for the Apremede-Oseikrom Electoral Area, Mannah Mustapha, has stated that the landowner had earlier asked illegal miners to vacate the site before the tragic pit collapse that claimed nine lives.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mustapha explained that the landowner had warned the youth against engaging in illegal mining activities on the land.

“When the incident happened, the landowner informed me that he had already sacked everyone from the site. We all know that even the President has said no to galamsey and does not accept it. So we cannot say we were aware and encouraged the youth to engage in galamsey. They did that on their own,” Mustapha said.

According to him, the illegal mining activities had only started recently and were mostly carried out at night.

“It has not been long since they started. They were doing it at night. The landowner asked them to stop just a few days before the incident, but they did not listen,” he stated.

Mustapha further revealed that the landowner had requested security to protect the land after discovering the illegal activities.

“Per what the landowner told me, he asked his people to arrange security to protect the place,” he said.

He added that officers from the Kenyasi Police Station had visited the site about a week before the collapse after receiving reports of ongoing galamsey activities.

“The police came there to take pictures of the place when they heard about the illegal mining. That was even before the unfortunate incident happened,” he explained.

Mustapha said community leaders were attempting to stop the youth from continuing the activity and had gathered evidence for the police.

“We were all trying to stop them. The police only took pictures as evidence. It was about three to four days after the galamsey started that the unfortunate incident happened,” he added.

His comments follow the tragic collapse of a galamsey pit at Atta ne Atta in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region, where nine young men lost their lives. Four others are currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hwidiem.

The incident occurred late Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday at a site believed to have been newly excavated.

Mother, three children drown in abandoned galamsey pit at Wassa Dankwa https://www.adomonline.com/mother-three-children-drown-in-abandoned-galamsey-pit-at-wassa-dankwa/ Mon, 02 Mar 2026 11:10:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636631 A 42-year-old woman and her three sons have drowned in an abandoned illegal mining pit at Wassa Dunkwa in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the family reportedly went to fetch firewood near a galamsey site.

An eyewitness told Joy News that residents in the area often visit the location to collect dried cocoa trees for firewood.

According to the eyewitness, after gathering the firewood and placing it by the roadside, the children decided to swim in a nearby pit left behind by illegal miners. The pit, which had been filled with water, turned fatal when the children began to drown.

Their mother, upon noticing the distress of her children, rushed in to rescue them. However, she was unable to save them and also drowned in the process.

The bodies were retrieved and conveyed to the morgue at the Catholic Hospital in Asankragwa.

Police at Asankrangwa have commenced investigations into the incident.

Assembly Member for Wassa Dunkwa, Paul Kata, confirmed the incident to Joy News.

The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers posed by abandoned galamsey pits in many communities across the Western Region.

Political influence turned galamsey into a monster – Former CJ Sophia Akuffo https://www.adomonline.com/political-influence-turned-galamsey-into-a-monster-former-cj-sophia-akuffo/ Mon, 02 Mar 2026 06:58:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636461 Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo says illegal mining, aka galamsey, spiralled out of control when people with political influence turned it into a vehicle for quick wealth.

Speaking on Joy News’PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, she said the country must accept collective responsibility for the crisis.

“We should all stand condemned for one, irresponsibility and irresponsible governance, because it didn’t start overnight.”

She rejected the argument that galamsey has always existed in its current destructive form.

“There will be those who say there has always been a galamsey,” but she drew a sharp contrast with her childhood memories of life around the Birim River.

“I remember the clear waters of my childhood,” she recounted how Saturdays were spent by the river.

“Part of my growing up was in Kyebi. And I remember Saturdays, we would walk down to the Birim, and that’s where we would do the washing of the clothing.”

Children swam freely, she said, without fear. “You swim, swim, swim, swim, swim, until your eyes are bulging out. We didn’t get bilharzia, we didn’t get any chemical, because it was clear water.”

Water was even fetched for household use, “but it was then not out of hand.”

According to her, the turning point came when politically connected actors saw profit in the trade.

“When it started getting out of hand was when, let’s say, people with political influence saw a source of income or a quick wealth in it, and then it went so completely out of hand.”

She said the consequences are now frightening.

Recounting a conversation with a friend, she said: “A friend of mine, I told her, but you told me, you have a house in your hometown, but you’ve never invited me for a weekend or something.”

The response was chilling. “And she said, and I will not, because I myself, I don’t go there anymore because I don’t think it’s safe.”

The reason, she explained, was mining activity beneath homes. “This is because they have been mining underneath her building in the middle of the village.”

For her, the crisis reflects a dangerous shift in values. “Now it’s wealth at all costs, and it does not matter.”

Yet she noted that some communities are resisting the tide.

“There are still some towns and villages in some of these areas where the people have also said that no matter what, we will not permit anybody, even if you come with a license from the minerals commission, we’re not going to allow you to do any small-scale operation in this place.”

Their choice, she said, is clear. “We will continue with our farming.”

Galamsey: 38, including teenagers, arrested in Birim North https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-38-including-teenagers-arrested-in-birim-north/ Sat, 28 Feb 2026 10:28:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636123 The Eastern South Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has intensified the crackdown on illegal mining, arresting 38 individuals during a targeted intelligence-led operation in the Birim North District.

The raid took place on the outskirts of Ntoranang on Friday, February 27, 2026, between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Officers moved in on what authorities described as a well-organised galamsey site concealed within a palm plantation.

The location, shielded by dense vegetation, had reportedly been used for active gold extraction operations.

According to the Police, all 38 suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations, with plans to arraign them before court on Monday, March 2, 2026.

In a statement, the Command noted, “All 38 suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations and are expected to be arraigned before the court on Monday, March 2, 2026, for prosecution.”

Preliminary findings suggest the operation may have had substantial financial backing, given the scale and sophistication of the equipment discovered at the scene. Investigators are working to identify individuals believed to be behind the network.

Authorities also disclosed that the group arrested reflects the growing cross-border dimension of illegal mining in the Eastern Region. Of those detained, 17 are nationals of Burkina Faso, while 21 are Ghanaians.

Particularly concerning to officials is the presence of minors at the site. Nine of the suspects are juveniles between the ages of 13 and 17, raising renewed alarm over child labour and the exposure of young people to hazardous environmental crimes.

Beyond the arrests, the police dismantled the operational infrastructure at the site. Intelligence had indicated that the miners were using high-capacity machinery to wash gold within the plantation, a practice believed to have caused significant soil destruction and water pollution.

Officers confiscated and destroyed several items used in the activity, including water pumping machines for high-pressure washing, industrial power generators supplying electricity to the remote camp, large networks of hoses and makeshift structures that had been serving as accommodation for the workers.

The latest operation forms part of broader efforts by security agencies to curb the environmental damage and criminal networks associated with illegal mining across the region.

Fight against galamsey: Over 114 cases pending in court — Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/fight-against-galamsey-over-114-cases-pending-in-court-mahama/ Fri, 27 Feb 2026 12:36:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2635882 President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, warning that the practice continues to threaten the environment, water bodies, public health, and national security.

Speaking in Parliament, the President said the government has intensified the prosecution of illegal mining offenders, with a strategic shift toward dismantling organized criminal networks behind the operations.

“Prosecution of illegal mining cases has been intensified, with a renewed focus on dismantling the organized criminal networks behind galamsey operations, rather than targeting only low-level offenders. In these operations, there are big fish who often go unpunished,” he noted.

President Mahama revealed that over 114 case dockets, involving hundreds of accused persons, are currently before various courts across the country, particularly in mining-prone communities.

To strengthen enforcement, specialized prosecutorial teams have been deployed to fast-track galamsey-related cases, ensure effective presentation of evidence, and pursue the confiscation and forfeiture of equipment and proceeds derived from illegal mining activities.

On gender and social protection, the President assured Ghanaians that the government remains committed to promoting gender equality, safeguarding children’s rights, and empowering vulnerable groups—including the elderly and persons with disabilities—as part of broader efforts to drive sustainable national development.

According to Minister Buah, 500 excavators have been seized, with 490 of them currently impounded at the Tema Port.

Speaking in Parliament, he explained that the initiative is aimed at curbing illegal mining and protecting the environment, as part of a broader strategy to regulate and preserve Ghana’s water bodies.

He further stated that importers of heavy equipment will now be required to obtain clearance before bringing in machinery, allowing the government to monitor all excavators operating in the country.

In addition, Minister Buah noted that the Ministry is collaborating with the transport sector to register and track excavators already in use.

Speaking on the concerning trend, Mr. Agyare Ansah noted that this shift has led to a drastic drop in school enrolment in several parts of the Juaboso district.

According to him, the lure of galamsey remains the most significant factor driving children away from school. Many pupils reportedly visit mining sites during class hours, leaving education behind for short-term financial gains. He described the situation as a persistent challenge for the local education sector.

“The authorities have been informed, and we expect a decisive response to curb this issue,” he said.

Confirming the report, the Juaboso District Chief Executive, Alexander Adu Quist, stated that the assembly, in collaboration with local assembly members, is implementing measures to address the problem. He also called on parents and guardians to take an active role in supporting the assembly’s efforts to ensure children remain in school.

“This is a collective responsibility. Schools, parents, and local authorities must work together to redirect our children towards education and away from hazardous mining activities,” he added.

Oppong Nkrumah sues Baba Jamal Konneh over “galamsey” claims https://www.adomonline.com/oppong-nkrumah-sues-baba-jamal-konneh-over-galamsey-claims/ Mon, 23 Feb 2026 15:51:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2634090 Ofoase-Ayirebi MP Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has filed a defamation suit at the Accra High Court against Jamal Konneh, Deputy Managing Director (Operations) of the Cocoa Marketing Company and Eastern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The suit, filed through Nkrumah & Associates, arises from comments allegedly made by Mr. Konneh during a live broadcast. Mr. Konneh reportedly accused the former Minister for Information of bringing Chinese nationals into Akyemansa in the Eastern Region to engage in illegal mining (galamsey), claiming this led to the destruction of cocoa farms and harmed farmers’ livelihoods.

Court documents obtained by Adomonline.com indicate that the remarks were presented not as political commentary but as statements of fact, purportedly based on personal knowledge. The comments, delivered in Twi, were broadcast live to a national audience, streamed online, and widely shared on social media and WhatsApp.

Mr. Nkrumah has dismissed the allegations as false and malicious, stating that they portray him as involved in criminal conduct and unfit for public office. He claims the broadcast caused reputational damage, emotional distress, and diminished public confidence in his leadership.

He is seeking a declaration that the statements are defamatory, GH¢20 million in general damages for harm to his reputation, and an additional GH¢10 million in aggravated and exemplary damages, citing malice and the extensive circulation of the remarks.

The suit also requests a full retraction and apology on Okay FM, in at least three widely circulated national newspapers, and across all digital platforms where the claims were shared.

Additionally, Mr. Nkrumah is asking the court to grant a perpetual injunction restraining Mr. Konneh from repeating the allegations and to order the removal of all related material from broadcast archives, websites, and social media channels.

Galamsey: Ntotroso Chief urges Newmont to support community mining https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-ntotroso-chief-urges-newmont-to-support-community-mining/ Sun, 22 Feb 2026 12:31:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2633529 The Paramount Chief of Ntotroso and President of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, Barima Twereko Ampem III, has appealed to Newmont Gold Ghana to support government’s “Community Mining” initiative as part of efforts to curb illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the region.

He made the appeal at Ntotroso during the celebration of the Apomasu Yam Festival, held under the theme “Mining and Tradition: Building Resilient Community Through Sustainable and Responsible Mining.”

The chief explained that in a bid to end illegal mining activities in the Asutifi North District, government has decided to establish community mining operations at Kenyasi. He noted that it would be appropriate for Newmont Gold Ghana to leverage its experience and expertise in responsible mining to support the initiative and ensure its success.

According to him, illegal mining in the district — particularly in communities where Newmont operates — poses a serious threat to the company’s operations. He stressed that it would be in the company’s own interest to partner with government to make the community mining programme effective and sustainable.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, who represented President John Dramani Mahama at the event, commended the chiefs and people of Ntotroso for using the festival to uphold the country’s culture and values while promoting development, particularly in education.

He said the people of Ntotroso are fortunate to have Barima Twereko Ampem III as their chief, describing him as accountable in managing funds the community receives from Newmont Gold Ghana.

The minister encouraged the chief to continue using the festival as a platform to accelerate development in the area.

The operation, which took place on Thursday, February 12, 2026, between 3:20 pm and 5:50 pm, followed what officials described as credible and actionable intelligence.

Upon arrival at the site, the task force discovered that the operators had fled, apparently tipped off about the team’s movement.

Two excavators that were reportedly in active use had been hurriedly relocated and concealed in a nearby bamboo plantation.

A technical assessment conducted by the team confirmed that the excavators had been recently operated.

To prevent their further use, officials removed critical components, including two control boards, two oil pumps, one monitor, and two batteries. The task force also seized a portable generator set found at the location.

Further inspection of the area revealed widespread destruction of arable lands and severe damage to a large bamboo plantation.

NAIMOS indicated that the illegal mining activities had heavily polluted the Nana Aworu River, a major source of potable water for surrounding communities, raising serious environmental and public health concerns.

As part of the operation, the task force set ablaze four multipurpose heavy-duty water pumping machines, several water hoses, one Chanfang machine, assorted personal belongings of the illegal miners, and multiple makeshift structures erected at the site.

Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, has called for the arrest of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tano North over the alleged unlawful issuance of a prospecting permit.

Speaking on JoyNews on Thursday, February 12, Dr Ashigbey described the development as a serious breach of established procedures governing mineral licensing in Ghana.

According to him, he had sighted a document purportedly issued by the Tano North MCE granting a prospecting permit—a responsibility that falls solely within the mandate of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

“I’ve just shared a permit I think from the Tano North MCE. You know who is supposed to sign a prospecting licence—it’s the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources,” he said.

Dr Ashigbey questioned the authority under which the MCE allegedly acted, stressing that such actions undermine the legal framework designed to regulate mining activities and combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

“But he, the MCE, has issued it and by now he should be arrested,” he added.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines CEO emphasised the need for strict enforcement of the law to deter irregularities in the mining sector. He maintained that allowing unauthorised persons to issue mineral licences weakens the fight against illegal mining and erodes public confidence in regulatory institutions.

Cocoa price cut could fuel galamsey – CDM warns https://www.adomonline.com/cocoa-price-cut-could-fuel-galamsey-cdm-warns/ Thu, 12 Feb 2026 19:21:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630669 The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has warned that the reduction of the cocoa producer price to GH¢2,587 per 64kg bag could undermine national efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The group argued that making cocoa farming less profitable may push farmers into environmentally destructive activities.

In a statement dated February 12, 2026, the CDM described the policy as “a direct threat to the fight against galamsey,” stressing that economic hardship often drives farmers to abandon cocoa cultivation for illegal mining.

“When cocoa farming becomes unprofitable, farmers abandon their farms and turn their farmlands into galamsey sites,” the group stated.

The CDM cautioned that the price reduction could accelerate the destruction of cocoa farmlands, intensify water pollution and worsen land degradation.

It further warned that such a development would undermine national anti-galamsey efforts and deepen environmental insecurity.

“The government cannot claim to be fighting galamsey while simultaneously creating the economic desperation that fuels it,” the statement said.

The group emphasised that policy coherence is essential in addressing both economic and environmental challenges.

Calling for an urgent reconsideration of the new price, the CDM maintained that safeguarding cocoa farmers’ incomes is not only an economic imperative but also a critical component of Ghana’s environmental protection strategy.

Socodevi worried over threat of galamsey on cocoa farms https://www.adomonline.com/socodevi-worried-over-threat-of-galamsey-on-cocoa-farms/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 19:13:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630257 The country director of Socodevi, a Canadian non-governmental organization committed to improving the lives of farmers through sustainable and inclusive cooperatives, has bemoaned the threat posed by illegal mining on cocoa production.

Nicolas Demers-Labrousse observed the cocoa sector is under threat with limited alternative income generation activities available to farmers, especially the youth.

Galamsey continues to ravage vegetation, including farmlands and forest reserves.

Assurances by successive governments to deal with the menace have failed as scientists warn of the presence of cyanide, mercury, and other hard metals used by illegal miners for gold processing in the food stream of Ghanaians.

Here is Margaret Frimpong Ayerekwa, Deputy Director at the Cocoa Health and Extension Division at Cocobod, who says cocoa farms are being seized for illegal mining activities.

Speaking in an interview with Joynews on the sidelines of an event to introduce cocoa seedlings to farmers at Adokwai in the Ashanti region, she appealed for the government’s intervention.

“I just got to know through discussions with some farmers that even yesterday, the miners or the galamseyers took over a woman’s farm without permission from even the woman forcefully, they’ve gone into the cocoa farm. It’s quiet disturbing and it is worrying.”

She continued, “Imagine these cocoa seedlings; the amount of money Socodevi – our partners. Have spent making sure we get all these seedlings. We plant and the next minute, you come back, you don’t see the cocoa seedlings on the field; it’s gone.  At the end of the day, all these things come back to us.Its not like somebody is doing galamsey and the impact won’t be felt. It’s been felt in our communities-our livelihoods, our health issues too. It’s really serious. So I just pleading with our farmers and the government that galamsey fight should be handled seriously.”

Socodevi, through its TogetHER—Women and Cocoa Communities Initiative, focused on empowering women and youth in cocoa-producing communities in the Ashanti and Western North Regions by using plant nurseries as an alternative income generation activity for farmers.

The not for profit organization introduced new plant seedlings to cooperative farmers at Adokwai in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti region.

But its country director, Nicolas Demers-Labrousse, says the threat of illegal mining in the cocoa sector is real.

“We need to be frank and transparent about it. Cocoa sector is in danger with the galamsey, with the illegal mining. We see it everywhere. If you drive to Adokwai or if you go to different parts of the Ashanti region, you’ll see major forests deforested, that we don’t see any trees,” he said.

“You see the illegal mining, so yes, definitely a threat to the cocoa business,” he added.

socodevi
Nicolas Demers-Labrousse -Country Director, Socodevi

He wants the government of Ghana to partner with Socodevi to provide alternative livelihoods to the youth through nurseries, poultry and animal rearing, as well as maize, cassava, dairy processing.

“We see a lot of youth going to the gallamsey. But if the needs are there, but unfortunately the income is not there, we need to find some solution for the youth, for the women ;  for the farmers.

Instead of selling the farm or burning the trees to do some illegal mining, there are some alternatives. One of the alternatives is the tree nursery. Another alternative is not only to concentrate only on the cocoa industry during four months of the year, but to continue with other income generating activities.”

“I’m talking about poultry, animal rearing, maize, cassava, dairy processing. And Sokodevi is there to position the cooperative, the youth, the women, and the union to do something different, to do something greater, and to receive more income from those income generating activities to make sure that there’s a future for those youth. “

It promotes collective savings, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion, while contributing to the long-term resilience of the cocoa sector and the fair distribution of economic benefits and opportunities.

With galamsey still ongoing, who is buying the gold? — Oppong Nkrumah questions government https://www.adomonline.com/with-galamsey-still-ongoing-who-is-buying-the-gold-oppong-nkrumah-questions-government/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 16:27:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629819 The Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi in the Eastern Region, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has posed a pointed question to the John Dramani Mahama–led NDC government over the fate of gold produced by illegal miners, popularly known as galamsey operators.

According to the MP, the new Gold Trading Act grants the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) the exclusive legal authority to export gold from Ghana.

GoldBod, which is headed by Sammy Gyamfi, has however denied claims that it purchases gold from illegal miners. In a set of frequently asked questions, GoldBod stated that it does not buy gold directly from miners.

The board explained that all gold it handles is sourced through licensed aggregators and approved intermediaries, in line with its regulatory mandate.

GoldBod further cited Section 3(1)(f) of Act 1140, which mandates the board to promote the formalisation of small-scale mining through responsible sourcing, sustainable supply chains, gold traceability, and compliance with international standards. Section 3(1)(g) of the same Act, it added, also requires the promotion of environmentally responsible mining practices.

Speaking in an interview with Akwasi Nsiah, host of Badwam on Adom TV, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said that while GoldBod has publicly denied buying gold from illegal miners, the critical question remains unanswered.

“If GoldBod is not buying galamsey gold, then who is buying it?” he asked.

He noted that government has announced measures to curb gold smuggling and has claimed it now has full control over gold exports. However, he argued that recent developments raise serious concerns.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah alleged that proceeds from illegally traded gold are being used to shore up the economy, pointing to the recent appreciation of the cedi against major foreign currencies.

He observed that while large-scale mining companies have recorded only marginal increases in production, artisanal and small-scale gold output has seen a significant spike, even as government claims to be intensifying the fight against illegal mining.

“With galamsey still ongoing and assurances of tight security against gold smuggling, the question still stands,” he stressed. “Who is buying the gold from the galamseyers?”

We’re not encouraging galamsey — Amansie Central Presiding Member on ‘galamsey tax’ https://www.adomonline.com/were-not-encouraging-galamsey-amansie-central-presiding-member-on-galamsey-tax/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 10:14:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629621 Presiding Member of the Amansie Central District Assembly, Isaac Osei Duah, has defended the collection of fees from licensed miners in the district, insisting the practice is legal and intended to regulate mining activities, not promote illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Osei Duah explained that the assembly agreed that operators with government-issued mining licenses would pay a form of tax to the district.

“Every assembly has the right to take tax from people. That’s the law, and that’s our motive. Those who have licenses pay something we call tax for the assembly, and every excavator we see in the district is given a sticker. They also pay a fee to be allowed to mine” he said.

He added that this system has been in place for many years.

“We started this long ago, and it has been going on for a while. It did not originate under the current administration; it has existed across several political administrations,” Mr. Osei Duah said.

When asked about allegations that the fees encourage illegal mining, he explained that the assembly does not go to the mining sites to collect money.

“It’s just recently that people come to pay, which shows that the assembly is taking steps to deter illegal mining,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of a JoyNews Hotline documentary exposé that uncovered what it described as a “pay-to-destroy syndicate” in the district, where miners reportedly pay GH₵6,000 annually to operate banned changfang machines with tacit approval from local authorities.

Mr. Osei Duah, however, maintained that the revenue collection is not linked to illegal activity.

“The fees we collect are from operators using earth-moving equipment and are meant to ensure proper regulation, not to encourage galamsey,” he said.

Galamsey Fight: Lands Minister inspects 320 reclaimed hectares at Manso Nyankomanse, pledges 2026 land drive https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-fight-lands-minister-inspects-320-reclaimed-hectares-at-manso-nyankomanse-pledges-2026-land-drive/ Wed, 04 Feb 2026 19:27:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2627698 The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has inspected the successful reclamation of 320 hectares of mined-out sites at Manso Nyankomanse in the Ashanti Region.

During a visit to the site on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the Minister commended the completion of the project, which has restored areas devastated by illegal mining activities.

Addressing the press, he said land reclamation remains a top government priority and expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved so far.

According to the Minister, the government will continue to implement more reclamation programmes to restore large parcels of land lost to illegal mining across the country.

“I am delighted to be here today at Manso Nyankomanse in the Ashanti Region to inspect the reclamation of degraded mined-out sites undertaken as part of Government’s national reclamation agenda and the Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative,” he stressed.

“I am pleased to note that a total of 320 hectares have been reclaimed across Site One (Nyankomanse – 240 ha) and Site Two (Asare – 80 ha) under this initiative. These reclaimed lands will help restore ecological balance, improve land productivity, and contribute to the long-term socio-economic development of the affected communities,” Armah-Kofi Buah added.

Inspecting the project, the Minister thanked Newmont Ghana Limited for supporting the successful completion of the exercise.

He also called on the corporate community to collaborate with government in spearheading such initiatives, noting that joint efforts are key to restoring environments damaged by prolonged illegal mining activities.

“I commend Newmont Ghana Limited for supporting Government beyond its statutory obligations and for contributing meaningfully to national environmental restoration efforts. We are also very grateful to the contractor who undertook this reclamation work — RM ECORESTORE GH LTD — for the excellent job done. We expect that the trees will be planted during the rainy season to complete the land restoration effort,” he said.

“Together, through collaboration and shared responsibility, we can reclaim our lands, restore our water bodies, and secure a sustainable future for generations to come,” he further emphasised.

The Minister was accompanied by his Special Advisor, Prof. J. S. Y. Kumah; Director of Forestry at the Lands Ministry, Mr. Joseph Osiakwan; CEO of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Tandoh; NAIMOS Director of Operations, Colonel Dominic Buah; Spokesperson to the Minister, Mahmoud Kabore; and Media Relations Officer at the Ministry, Paa Kwesi Schandorf.

Speaking at the site, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, commended the sector minister for his bold commitment to fighting the menace of illegal mining.

He said that although the fight against galamsey has been challenging, he is impressed by the political will of the Minister in tackling the issue. Dr. Amoakohene pledged his continuous support to combat the menace, especially in the Ashanti Region, noting that while government is not against mining, it will continue to take action against persons who destroy the environment.

The District Chief Executive and the local Chief also expressed gratitude to government, assuring that they will continue to safeguard the environment from destructive mining activities.

The restoration of degraded lands is part of government’s five-pronged approach to addressing the scourge of illegal mining.

So far, about 5,500 hectares of land, equivalent to 7,500 football fields, have been lost to illegal mining. Government says this will soon be addressed through aggressive land reclamation efforts in partnership with the private sector.

Cocoa farmers consider smuggling, land sales to illegal miners over three-month arrears https://www.adomonline.com/cocoa-farmers-consider-smuggling-land-sales-to-illegal-miners-over-three-month-arrears/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 13:41:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2627058 As the Ghana Cocoa Board races against time to rethink its financing scheme in cocoa purchases, some farmers in the Ashanti region are contemplating smuggling the beans to neighbouring countries and selling off their lands to illegal miners.

For three months now, the farmers have eagerly awaited payments for the bags of cocoa beans they sold to the COCOBOD through licensed cocoa buying companies.

Their regular visits to local moneylenders have proven futile, leaving many of them in a real struggle to fend for themselves and their families.

David Berko and his wife combed through their cocoa farm parcel in the Kofiase community of the Ashanti region in a desperate search for ripe cocoa pods.

After hours of frantic search, they collected a basket of the pods and headed to their thatched house sitting in the middle of the deep cocoa plantation.

This has been their source of livelihood for nearly three decades.

But the past few months have been unprecedentedly difficult.

“Times are hard now. We used the initial payment to settle our labourers. Because I have no money, I told my son to stay home for school,” David said.

For three months now, the couple have not received any funds for the cocoa beans they supplied to the local licensed buying company.

Requesting money from them has become a daily struggle, throwing them into untoward hardship.

“Yesterday we ate ampesi. This morning, we have no cash on us for food. The purchasing clerk told us to come for the money. But when my husband went there, he told him, there isn’t any now. We’ve been chasing the money since,” David’s wife added.

A few meters away from David’s abode, I meet Shaibu, also a cocoa farmer.

His story isn’t any different.

“We are suffering. We have no money. I thought you’d come here to give me money. My wife has left me alone in the bush to cater for our children,” he said.

This is the plight of many cocoa farmers across the country.

After receiving the October payment, funds for all the harvests they made from November to date have not been paid.

The joy that erupted after the government increased cocoa prices has been short-lived.

“This government cares less about the cocoa sector. We’ve ever been in this situation before,” Nana, another cocoa farmer, noted.

The government, in October 2025, set its farmgate price at 58,000 cedis per metric tonne, selling at approximately 3,228 cedis per 64-kilogramme.

But the price adjustment came with a new cocoa financing regime. COCOBOD announced that no syndicated loans were secured for the 2025/26 crop season.

The reworked cocoa financing system saw farmers sell beans to licensed buying companies, which then sell to COCOBOD and through its marketing arm, COCOBOD sells the cocoa to international buyers.

The arrears have seen many licensed buying companies operating under COCOBOD halt purchases.

Kwadwo Adubofour is a purchasing clerk for OLAM at Ekona.

“The money isn’t coming. We’ve credited some bags of the cocoa, for which we expect that payments will be made for them. The LBCs have informed us not to take any cocoa again. They suspect a cocoa price reduction in the coming days,” he said.

Data from the Bank of Ghana indicates cocoa traded at approximately 5,800 dollars per tonne on the global market as of December 2025, declining from over 11,000 dollars at the beginning of that year.

Industry sources say the recent decline in international prices has made it difficult for COCOBOD to secure advance payments from traders, forcing the central government to step in to provide funding.

Professor Robert Aidoo is an agricultural economist at the KNUST.

“Wanting to get the most from the international market is good. But I think it doesn’t have to be done by sacrificing the welfare of the farmer,” Prof Aidoo noted.

While some farmers find alternative farming to support their families, others are contemplating smuggling and selling off their lands to illegal miners.

“The government is now focusing on gold. If that’s the case, then I will sell my land to illegal miners to get the money due me. I want to even snuggle mine,” Nana threatened.

Sources indicate that the COCOBOD is rethinking its financing strategy as large amounts of the cocoa beans pile up in farms, putting investments at serious risk.

“The government can utilise the benefits from the gold program to pay off the farmers, if they are now saying the economy is being stabilised through the gold for forex program,” Prof Aidoo recommended

But one question lingers on the minds of the farmers as they harvest the beans: “Who will buy them after drying?”
