Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m., when about 50 uniformed men arrived at the site with an excavator and began pulling down the structure without prior notice.

A couple living on the land alleged that they were held at gunpoint during the operation, leaving them traumatised.

“The whole experience was terrifying. We felt completely helpless,” one of the victims recounted.

Residents claim the team, reportedly led by an individual identified only as “Olanyo,” ordered the immediate demolition of the mosque, locally referred to as “masalachi.”

The incident has sparked fear and panic within the community, with some residents alleging that it is not the first time they have faced such intimidation.

Community members are now calling on authorities, including the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of the Interior, to investigate the matter and ensure accountability.

They are also demanding clarity on the circumstances that led to the demolition, as well as protection from further incidents.

Two dead, five injured in fatal crash at Third Ridge in Cape Coast https://www.adomonline.com/two-dead-five-injured-in-fatal-crash-at-third-ridge-in-cape-coast/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 15:42:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656534 Two people have been confirmed dead, with five others injured, following a fatal road crash at Third Ridge Junction on the Accra–Cape Coast Highway in Cape Coast.

The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, involved a Toyota Corolla with registration number GW-5769-16 and a HOWO tipper truck with registration number GN-1497-22.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service at the Cape Coast Regional Headquarters responded to the distress call and carried out rescue operations at the scene.

According to the Central Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Merinda Mary Atsigah-Mensah, the driver of the Toyota Corolla was trapped behind the steering wheel and had to be extricated by firefighters.

She explained that he was rescued from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Preliminary accounts indicate that the Corolla was travelling from Cape Coast towards Accra when the driver slowed down after spotting a pick-up vehicle overtaking dangerously.

The HOWO tipper truck, which was approaching from the opposite direction, reportedly veered off its lane to avoid a collision with the overtaking vehicle. However, while attempting to return to its lane, the driver lost control and crashed into the Corolla.

All casualties were transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for treatment and further management.

ACFO1 Atsigah-Mensah cautioned drivers to exercise discipline and adhere to road safety regulations, noting that reckless driving remains a major cause of avoidable road accidents in the region.

Residents invoke deities to oppose possible return of Adamus Resources https://www.adomonline.com/residents-invoke-deities-to-oppose-possible-return-of-adamus-resources/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 15:37:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656530 Residents of four host communities of Adamus Resources Limited have performed traditional rites to oppose any attempt to restore the company’s mining concession, invoking their deities to prevent its return.

The symbolic exercise, which involved the pouring of libation, was carried out by residents of Salma, Anwia, Akango and Duale, who say they are determined to resist any move to allow the mining firm back into their communities.

According to the Abusuapanyin, Kwaw Nkrumah, the ritual serves both as a protest and a spiritual appeal to protect their lands and livelihoods.

The development follows the recent revocation of the company’s mining licence by government over alleged illegal operations and breaches of regulatory requirements.

Residents insist the decision must remain final.

Traditional leaders who participated in the exercise said the invocation reflects the depth of anger and concern among community members, stressing that their lands remain their primary source of livelihood.

They are therefore calling on government to uphold its decision and ensure that the company does not return to the area.

Community members accuse the company of causing significant environmental damage, including the destruction of farmlands and pollution of water bodies, which they say has worsened living conditions.

Some residents who spoke to the media warned that they will continue to resist the company through lawful means, cautioning that any attempt to reinstate the concession could trigger renewed tensions.

Presbyterian Church Moderator calls for action against galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/presbyterian-church-moderator-calls-for-action-against-galamsey/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 15:34:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656528 The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare-Kwakye, has appealed to government, traditional leaders, and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

He said the devastating impact of galamsey on the environment, water bodies, and livelihoods calls for urgent and collective action from all stakeholders. According to him, the fight against illegal mining should not be politicised but treated as a national priority.

The Moderator also criticised some politicians for verbally attacking clergy members who have openly spoken against illegal mining. He stressed that religious leaders have a moral responsibility to speak on national issues and should not be insulted for advocating environmental protection.

“We cannot sit unconcerned while our lands and water bodies are destroyed. Those who speak the truth, especially the clergy, must be supported and not insulted,” he said.

He made the remarks during the 8th Congregation Ceremony at the Presbyterian University, Ghana (PUG), Abetifi Campus, where he also encouraged graduates to become agents of positive change in society.

Rt. Rev. Dr Opare-Kwakye further called for unity among all stakeholders in addressing the galamsey menace to safeguard the country’s natural resources for future generations.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor John Ofosu-Anim, urged the graduates to confront societal challenges and apply the knowledge acquired during their training to help find solutions and contribute to national development.

Asiedu Nketia calls for probe into state fires, warns against possible sabotage https://www.adomonline.com/asiedu-nketia-calls-for-probe-into-state-fires-warns-against-possible-sabotage/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 15:28:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656522 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for thorough investigations into recent fire outbreaks at state institutions, warning that the incidents could be acts of deliberate sabotage.

Addressing party supporters and residents in the Bolgatanga East Constituency as part of his ongoing nationwide “Thank You” tour, he expressed concern about the timing and frequency of the fires.

“We must investigate every fire outbreak that happens in any state institution to rule out sabotage,” he stated.

Mr Asiedu Nketia drew parallels with similar incidents recorded in 2000 and 2016, suggesting what he described as a recurring pattern that requires urgent national attention.

“These occurrences are eerily similar to what happened in those years. We cannot afford to remain passive when state property is being destroyed under suspicious circumstances,” he added.

He further alleged that the incidents could form part of a calculated attempt to trigger artificial power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” aimed at undermining the current administration or shaping public sentiment.

“The devil will be exposed for any intentional sabotage aimed at creating artificial ‘dumsor’ to destabilise the country,” he said.

The NDC Chairman also urged party members and the general public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing that the protection of national assets is a shared responsibility.

“We must be the watchdogs of our own institutions. If you see something, say something,” he urged.

The Bolgatanga East engagement formed part of his wider tour to express gratitude to grassroots supporters while also outlining the party’s concerns about governance and the management of national infrastructure.

The victim, who resides in Kumasi, had travelled to Mankessim to undertake a tiling contract reportedly valued at GH¢85,000.

The incident occurred on Sunday, according to local sources, who said the man allegedly attempted to harm himself using his work equipment but was rescued by his apprentice.

Former Assembly Member for the Anafo Estate Electoral Area, Cephas Arthur, confirmed the incident but indicated that the reason behind the act remains unknown.

He explained that the victim was found in a pool of blood by his apprentice after he failed to respond.

The injured man was initially rushed to the Mercy Women’s Hospital, popularly known as Roman Hospital, where medical staff worked to stabilise his condition before referring him to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Mr Arthur commended the medical team at the facility for their swift response in managing the situation but expressed concern over delays in securing an ambulance to transport the victim to Accra.

According to him, it took several hours before an ambulance became available for the transfer.

The victim is currently receiving treatment at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where his condition is reported to be critical.

NADMO issues alert on Chlorine gas leak at Baifikrom Water Treatment Plant https://www.adomonline.com/nadmo-issues-alert-on-chlorine-gas-leak-at-baifikrom-water-treatment-plant/ Tue, 07 Apr 2026 07:32:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2648404 Residents of Mankessim, Enyanmaim, Baifikrom, and surrounding communities have been urged to follow safety guidelines following a chlorine gas leak at the Baifikrom Water Treatment Plant in the Central Region.

The Central Regional Disaster Management Committee confirmed the incident, noting that it prompted an immediate emergency response involving multiple state institutions.

In a statement, Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood Mensah, Central Regional Director of NADMO and Secretary to the Committee, said the situation has been brought under control, though technical teams remain on-site to fully contain and neutralise the leak.

The response effort involves personnel from the Ghana Water Company Limited, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Health Service, NADMO Central, and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly.

Authorities explained that chlorine gas is denser than air and tends to settle close to the ground. Residents who detect a strong bleach-like smell have been advised to move to higher ground or relocate in the direction of the wind.

For those unable to leave the area, officials recommend staying indoors, closing all doors and windows, and sealing openings with damp cloths to limit exposure. The public has also been cautioned to avoid low-lying areas such as valleys, trenches, and basements, where the gas can accumulate.

Health experts warned that exposure may cause eye irritation, blurred vision, skin redness, coughing, and breathing difficulties. Anyone affected is advised to rinse their eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes, wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water, and seek fresh air immediately if breathing becomes difficult.

Medical teams at Mankessim Catholic Hospital and other nearby facilities have been placed on standby to manage potential cases. Residents experiencing symptoms have been urged to seek prompt medical care.

The Disaster Management Committee has also appealed for calm and asked residents to stay clear of the immediate area around the treatment plant to allow emergency teams to work efficiently.

Meanwhile, NADMO officials and Disaster Volunteer Groups have been deployed to support residents and ensure orderly movement where necessary. Authorities say updates will be provided as efforts continue to secure and isolate the affected chlorine cylinders.

Four including children killed after truck crashes into salon at Kumawu https://www.adomonline.com/four-including-children-killed-after-truck-crashes-into-salon-at-kumawu/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 07:30:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2620828 Four people, including two minors, have died after a tipper truck crashed into a hair salon at Kumawu in the Ashanti Region.

The fatal accident occurred on Saturday, January 17, when the heavy-duty truck, which was hauling sand from an ongoing road construction project, reportedly lost control and veered off the road into a container shop used as a salon.

The impact instantly turned the busy salon into a scene of devastation.

According to Accra-based Citi News, the salon operator, her two children, and a customer were trapped when the truck rammed into the structure, killing them on the spot.

Four others sustained various injuries, including the truck driver. One critically injured victim was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, while the others are receiving treatment at the Kumawu Government Hospital.

Residents have expressed renewed concerns over the safety of operations by the construction firm responsible for the Kumawu road project.

This is not the first incident involving the company’s trucks. Previously, one of its vehicles veered into a mosque in the area. Although no lives were lost then, the latest tragedy has intensified calls for stricter safety measures.

OMCs commence fuel price reduction; GOIL sells petrol at GH¢9.99, Star Oil cuts to GH¢9.97 https://www.adomonline.com/omcs-commence-fuel-price-reduction-goil-sells-petrol-at-gh%c2%a29-99-star-oil-cuts-to-gh%c2%a29-97/ Fri, 16 Jan 2026 12:33:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2620044 Some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have begun reducing fuel prices at the pumps from today, January 16, 2026.

The development follows industry projections that petroleum product prices were expected to fall by more than three per cent per litre in the current pricing window.

The second-largest player in the downstream oil sector, GOIL, took the lead early this morning by reducing the price of petrol from GH¢10.99 to GH¢9.99 per litre.

Diesel has also been reduced from GH¢11.96 to GH¢11.21 per litre at its service stations, effective 6:00 am.

In a circular issued today, GOIL said the move forms part of efforts to provide added value to customers. The company is offering discounted prices at 150 selected service stations nationwide.

It, however, noted that regular pump prices will continue to apply at other GOIL stations.

GOIL said the initiative aligns with its role as a national energy company and its responsibility to support broader socio-economic objectives, especially during the ongoing economic recovery.

Star Oil’s Reaction

Market leader Star Oil has also announced price reductions at the pumps, effective 8:00 am today.

Petrol is now expected to sell at GH¢9.97 per litre, while diesel will go for GH¢10.97 per litre.

The reductions are part of Star Oil’s ongoing price-discount strategy at most of its service stations nationwide.

Sources close to Star Oil told JoyBusiness that the company welcomes the competition, describing it as healthy for the industry.

One source noted that the development strengthens calls for the National Petroleum Authority to abolish the price floor model, which bars OMCs from selling fuel below a set minimum price.

Several other OMCs have also told JoyBusiness that they will adjust prices at the pumps from today, January 16, 2026.

Industry watchers say GOIL appears to be adopting a pricing model similar to that used by Star Oil in recent months, a strategy that has helped drive strong growth for the market leader.

Reasons for the Reduction

According to the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, the more than three per cent reduction in fuel prices has been driven by two key factors: a decline in prices of finished petroleum products and the sustained appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.

Both factors, the Chamber said, “have played an instrumental role in the projected price decreases at the pumps.”

The Chamber’s market report noted that despite a marginal increase in crude oil prices, major petroleum products recorded price declines due to global oversupply.

Petrol prices were projected to fall by between 1.26 per cent and 2.30 per cent, while diesel was expected to decline by up to 2.10 per cent.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas is also projected to drop by as much as 5.09 per cent.

Meanwhile, the Ghana cedi strengthened sharply against major trading currencies in the new year. For the January 16, 2026 pricing window, the currency appreciated from GH¢11.52 to GH¢10.90, representing a 5.71 per cent gain.

Databank Research has suggested that upcoming foreign exchange pressures on the cedi will be limited by the gradual rollout of the US$1 billion allocation for January under the Bank of Ghana’s FX Intermediation Programme.

This is the second time this month that prices of petroleum products have declined at the pumps.

Speaking to JoyNews following news of his death, the Akatsi South MP said she was devastated by the loss, noting that she had looked forward to working closely with him this year as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) pursued its parliamentary agenda.

“He’s one of the honest MPs I’ve dealt with,” Madam Cudjoe said. “He has been very good to me, and we have worked together as one people. I don’t even know how to express my feelings now because this is not the time to hear this news. I was expecting more from him this year as we deliver for the party.”

She extended her condolences to the family of the late lawmaker and to the NDC, describing the loss as deeply painful.

“All that I would say is condolences to my wife and my children, and the NDC. It’s not easy,” she added.

Police restore calm after Eyisam–Mankessim youth clash leaves one injured https://www.adomonline.com/police-restore-calm-after-eyisammankessim-youth-clash-leaves-one-injured/ Sun, 04 Jan 2026 14:10:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2615932 The Central Regional Police Command has restored calm following a violent clash between youth from Ekumfi Eyisam and Mankessim at the Shell fuel station in Mankessim, which left one person injured.

In a statement, the Police said the incident occurred on Friday, January 3, 2026, at about 7:20 p.m., after a distress call was received regarding a fight involving a group of young men at the fuel station.

The Mankessim night patrol team was immediately deployed to the scene. However, upon arrival, the youth involved fled after pelting stones at each other and dispersed upon sighting the police.

According to preliminary information gathered by the Police, earlier in the day at about 2:00 p.m., youth from Ekumfi Eyisam had attended a wedding in Mankessim. During the event, they received reports that one of their colleagues had been attacked and beaten by some Mankessim youth at the Accra lorry station while searching for transport to Eyisam.

After the wedding, the Eyisam youth reportedly moved to the Accra lorry station to confront the alleged attacker. A person was identified to them as the suspect, prompting a chase into a nearby chicken shop close to the Shell fuel station. In the process, one of the glass doors at the shop was broken before the group retreated.

The situation escalated when some Mankessim youth also rushed to the scene, resulting in a stone-throwing confrontation between the two groups. The clash was disrupted when police arrived, causing both sides to flee.

One person, identified only as Wisdom, sustained injuries and was rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where he is responding to treatment.

Police said calm has since been restored, and the area was monitored throughout the night to prevent any further disturbances.

Lithium deal: Prof. Oquaye questions fairness of Ghana’s royalty regime https://www.adomonline.com/lithium-deal-prof-oquaye-questions-fairness-of-ghanas-royalty-regime/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 12:08:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2610812 Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, has raised serious concerns about the lithium mining agreement between the Government of Ghana and Barari DV, questioning the fairness and long-term implications of the royalty framework governing the deal.

His comments follow the government’s decision to withdraw the revised lithium agreement from Parliament on December 10 to allow for further consultations with key stakeholders.

The withdrawal came after the Majority in Parliament opposed the revised terms, arguing that the 10 per cent royalty rate negotiated under the Akufo-Addo administration contravenes the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2010, which caps mineral royalties at 5 per cent.

However, speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Prof. Oquaye said the national debate should not be reduced to whether the royalty rate is 10 per cent or 5 per cent.

He argued that the long-standing royalty cap itself has worked against Ghana’s interests, particularly in the exploitation of high-value natural resources.

According to him, it is troubling that Ghana continues to operate under a framework that limits royalties to a maximum of 5 per cent, even for minerals of significant global value such as lithium, gold, diamonds, and bauxite.

Prof. Oquaye called for a fundamental rethink of Ghana’s mineral royalty regime, urging the country to negotiate higher minimum royalty rates to secure fairer returns from resource extraction.

“The present withdrawal is quite interesting, because some people have viewed it in the context of the royalty percentage, from 10 per cent to 5 per cent. But this 5 per cent has existed for some time,” he said.

“It’s very painful to envisage that we have something that has got value, and then we say when you take this commodity, which has got value, don’t give me more than 5 per cent. That is what the cap means. Honestly, we have not been fair to our nation at all in terms of these gold, diamond and bauxite matters. You can say I want at least 20 per cent.”

The lithium agreement, initially laid before Parliament by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, relates to the mining of lithium and other minerals at Mankessim in the Central Region.

The deal was later revised after Barari DV Ghana Limited requested amendments to the lease terms, citing a sharp decline in global lithium prices that had affected the project’s commercial viability.

Government withdraws revised Lithium Mining Agreement from Parliament for further consultations https://www.adomonline.com/government-withdraws-revised-lithium-mining-agreement-from-parliament-for-further-consultations/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 14:45:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609029 The government has withdrawn the revised lithium mining agreement from Parliament to allow for additional consultations with key stakeholders.

Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Yusif Sulemana, announced the decision on Wednesday, December 10, explaining that the move would enable the Ministry to “undertake further consultations with very relevant stakeholders prior to representing it to this very important House.”

The agreement, initially presented by Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, covers lithium and other mineral extraction at Mankessim in the Central Region. It was revised after Barari DV Ghana Limited, the company involved, requested adjustments to the lease terms due to a steep decline in global lithium prices, which has heavily affected the project’s viability. Prices reportedly dropped from around $3,000 per tonne to approximately $630, making many lithium projects worldwide unprofitable.

In response, the government renegotiated the royalty structure, reducing the initial rate from 10 percent to 5 percent, with plans to restore the original rate when prices rebound.

The revised deal has drawn criticism from the Minority in Parliament. Former Lands Minister and Damongo MP Samuel Abu Jinapor argued that the new agreement is no different from the previous version and should be rejected. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin also accused the government of inconsistency in handling the deal.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga defended the agreement, urging Parliament to allow the relevant committees to scrutinize it and make informed recommendations. Speaker Alban Bagbin confirmed that the agreement would be referred to the appropriate committee for further examination.

The government says the withdrawal is intended to ensure that all concerns are addressed and that any eventual deal safeguards community interests, promotes job creation, and supports industrial development in the region.

Ewoyaa Lithium Project: Approve the lease now – Mankessim Chief tells Parliament https://www.adomonline.com/ewoyaa-lithium-project-approve-the-lease-now-mankessim-chief-tells-parliament/ Mon, 01 Dec 2025 19:30:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2605940 The Paramount Chief of the Mankessim Traditional Area, Osagyefo Amanfo Edu IV, has appealed to Parliament to expedite approval of the mining lease for the Ewoyaa Lithium Project, warning that continued delays are worsening hardship in affected communities.

Speaking on The Pulse, following a JoyNews documentary titled Hope on Pause: The Lithium Promises, which highlights how stalled commitments have left local aspirations in limbo, the chief stressed that parliamentary debates over the proposed 5% royalty should not hold up the entire project.

He argued that legislators could continue discussions on the royalty arrangement while allowing the mining lease to be approved immediately.

According to Osagyefo Amanfo Edu IV, mining operations require substantial preparation before extraction begins. Approving the lease, he said, would allow the company to commence preliminary work, including resettlement of residents, compensation processes, and delivery of promised infrastructure projects.

“It takes not less than a year to complete and commission a mine. They are going to do the civil works, mechanical works, and electrical works. After that, they will handle resettlement simultaneously. These processes cannot be done within the next six or seven months, so my opinion is that Parliament should approve the lease so these processes can commence,” he explained.

He added, “If our interest now is the royalty, by January 2027, when production starts, then we get our royalties.”

The chief emphasized that early approval is crucial to ensuring that families displaced by the project can be relocated, supported, and given the chance to benefit from the development they were promised. He warned that any further delay would exacerbate the already precarious living conditions in the affected communities.

Kasoa–Winneba highway set for June 2026 completion – Kwame Agbodza gives firm timeline https://www.adomonline.com/kasoa-winneba-highway-set-for-june-2026-completion-kwame-agbodza-gives-firm-timeline/ Tue, 25 Nov 2025 07:29:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2603439 The Kasoa–Winneba stretch of the coastal highway is expected to be completed by June 2026, Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza has confirmed.

Speaking on the progress of ongoing road projects on Channel One TV on Monday, November 24, Agbodza said, “The contractor says that by June next year it will all be done.”

He added, “For the Winneba to Mankessim section, the contract allows for two years, but I am confident it will be completed before 2027.”

He noted that once these projects are finished, the route from Kasoa to Takoradi will be fully dualised, enhancing connectivity between the Greater Accra and Central Regions.

The Kasoa–Winneba–Mankessim project involves three separate contractors, while the Cape Coast to Takoradi section is handled by another.

Agbodza, who is also the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, explained that the Cape Coast to Takoradi road is a larger project that links the two regions. Within the Central Region, the Kasoa–Winneba and Winneba–Mankessim sections are progressing steadily.

“When you travel from Winneba to Mankessim, we are building a brand new road alongside the existing one to dualise it. The Winneba interchange was not initially part of the project, but it has now been included,” he added.

Addressing the traffic bottlenecks experienced this year on the Kasoa–Winneba section, the Minister acknowledged that construction planning had contributed to delays.

“We made a mistake when we started working on the main carriageway and the expansion at the same time. This led to many of the bottlenecks we saw,” he said.

Once completed, the dual carriageway will significantly improve travel along the coastal corridor, supporting trade and easing congestion for motorists.

Ghana’s renegotiated lithium mining lease scheduled for parliamentary presentation today https://www.adomonline.com/ghanas-renegotiated-lithium-mining-lease-scheduled-for-parliamentary-presentation-today/ Tue, 11 Nov 2025 06:50:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2598494 The Lands and Natural Resources Ministry is scheduled to present the Mining Lease Agreement between the government and Barari DV Ghana Limited, Atlantic Lithium’s local subsidiary, today, November 11.

This is according to Parliament’s business statement for the week ending Friday, November 14, 2025.

The agreement covers the extraction of lithium and other minerals at Mankessim in the Central Region.

After more than two years of delay, this marks the clearest sign yet that Ghana’s first lithium project may be moving forward.

If the presentation goes ahead as scheduled, it would signal that the renegotiated agreement is ready for legislative scrutiny and a step closer to ratification.

The document will then be referred to the relevant committee for detailed consideration before any resolution for ratification is presented to the full House.

The revised terms of the lease have not yet been disclosed, but once parliamentary procedures begin, the document should be made public for citizens to review and provide feedback.

However, items listed under the “Presentation of Papers” can sometimes be deferred, so all eyes will be on Tuesday’s sitting to see whether the long-awaited lease finally makes its way to the floor.

Whether it does will test the government’s resolve to bring clarity and transparency to one of Ghana’s most anticipated mining deals.

The newly inaugurated facilities include eight-seater toilets, solar-powered water systems, standpipes, and taps across eight beneficiary communities: Boafri, Worenja, Bitim, Borae-Nkwanta, Korkorse, and Kradenteh in Krachi Nchumuru, as well as Sabaja and Nkyenekyene in Krachi West.

Speaking at the event, Irvine Aboagye, Southern Regional Operations Manager of World Vision, said the solar-powered systems will provide safe water to over 27,900 people, including schoolchildren. He highlighted that the initiative would help families save time previously spent traveling long distances to access clean water.

Mr. Aboagye emphasized the importance of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which seeks to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all, noting that achieving this goal is crucial to the success of many other SDGs.

He urged the beneficiary communities to take ownership and maintain the facilities to ensure their sustainability.

Robel Wamisho, Associate WASH Director at World Vision, echoed the appeal, calling on chiefs and community leaders to safeguard the facilities for future generations. He assured residents that the water systems were constructed using high-quality, stainless-steel materials free of harmful chemicals.

The project is part of World Vision’s broader initiatives in the Oti Region, which include the Reading Improvement and Skills Enhancement (RISE) program, community sponsorship projects, and the Healthy Environment and Wellness (HEAL) program — all aimed at improving living standards and promoting the well-being of children.

Ewoyaa lithium project: Minister, chiefs and MP unite behind swift ratification https://www.adomonline.com/ewoyaa-lithium-project-minister-chiefs-and-mp-unite-behind-swift-ratification/ Mon, 27 Oct 2025 10:38:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2592625 A strong show of unity among traditional, political, and government leaders in the Central Region has renewed calls for swift parliamentary ratification of the Ewoyaa Lithium Project, touted as Ghana’s first major lithium mining venture and a potential game-changer for local employment and development.

Speaking at the grand durbar of the Odambea Festival of the Nkusukum Traditional Area, Paramount Chief Okogyeman Okese Essando IX, Central Regional Minister Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah and Mfantseman Member of Parliament Dr. Ebenezer Prince Arhin all urged Parliament to act before the year ends to unlock the full benefits of the project.

The Ewoyaa Lithium Project, led by Atlantic Lithium Ghana Limited, has been in limbo since the government signed a 15-year mining lease with the company in October 2023. Although hailed as a landmark agreement that secured Ghana a 19% equity stake and a 10% royalty rate, the deal remains unratified by Parliament – stalling the start of operations and dampening hopes in host communities.

In his address, Okogyeman Okese Essando IX described the project as the “hope of the people of Nkusukum and Mfantseman,” lamenting the delay in parliamentary approval.

“We have waited patiently since 2023. The company is ready, the communities are ready, but the ratification has not been passed. Our people are frustrated because compensation and resettlement are on hold. If Parliament approves it today, within three months compensation will be paid, and resettlement construction will begin. This project will bring jobs, peace, and a future for our youth,” the chief added.

The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Dr. Ebenezer Prince Arhin, reassured his constituents that the issue was before Parliament and progressing toward a resolution.

“When the Ewoyaa Lithium Project starts, it will create jobs for many people in Mfantseman. In the Minister’s response, Cabinet has given the go-ahead for the Ministry to meet with Barari DV Ghana Limited (Atlantic Lithium) to ensure everything is done properly. I am very humble, yet happy, to announce to you – the chiefs and people of Nkusukum – that when the Leader of Government Business spoke on the day Parliament resumed sitting, it became clear that before the year ends, Parliament will ratify the Ewoyaa Lithium Project, which is located in Mfantseman.’

He disclosed that the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, had briefed Parliament that Cabinet had already given the green light for engagement with Atlantic Lithium to finalise all outstanding concerns.

“Atlantic Lithium, we will give you the necessary support to begin mining so that my people here in Mfantseman can get decent jobs to do. I want to make this statement strongly, especially in the presence of Atlantic Lithium, that the majority of people to be employed at the Ewoyaa Lithium Project must come from Mfantseman.”

“So, Atlantic Lithium, while we in the NDC are helping to get the project ratified for you, remember – if you need people to drive excavators, we have the youth here in Mfantseman who can do the job. If you need people to sell around the project, we have them here. If you need drivers, we have them here. If you need secretaries, remember our people are here,” the legislator appealed.

Adding his voice, Central Regional Minister Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah cautioned communities to prepare for responsible mining practices even before production begins.

“Chiefs, they are coming to mine lithium here. Let’s set the ground rules early to avoid illegal mining,” he urged. Once the project starts, no one has the right to enter the concession to mine or sell the resources. Let’s put measures in place to prevent ‘lithium galamsey’ before it begins,” Mr. Eduamoah indicated.

He emphasised that the region’s leaders must work together to ensure that the Ewoyaa project does not replicate the chaotic and destructive patterns of Ghana’s illegal gold mining sector.

The Ewoyaa Lithium Project, located between Mankessim, Nkusukum, and Abura in the Central Region, is estimated to create over 800 direct jobs and 2,700 indirect jobs during its lifespan. It also promises major economic spin-offs – including skills transfer, 24-hour operations and a Community Development Fund channeling 1% of annual revenues into local roads, schools, health facilities and recreation centers.

However, nearly two years after its signing, the project’s future remains uncertain. While Mali and Zimbabwe have moved ahead with lithium production, Ghana’s first project remains on hold, caught between bureaucratic delays and global price volatility.

For the people of Mfantseman and Nkusukum, the Ewoyaa Project must not become another missed opportunity. Parliament must act swiftly, not just to ratify the project, but to turn the promise of lithium into real jobs and lasting progress for the Central Region.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 22, with 34 people arrested so far and assisting with investigations at the Aburi Police Station.

According to a preliminary police report, the violence erupted when the Abokomahene of the Asona Family, Nana Semenhyia Asakrofa, performed traditional rites to lift the ban on drumming and noise-making, signalling the start of the Odwira Festival.

However, a misunderstanding reportedly arose between Nana Asakrofa and the Abimuhene of Ahwerease over who held the authority to perform the ceremony.

The dispute escalated into chaos, leading to gunfire from some individuals at the scene.

Four people sustained gunshot injuries, one of whom later died. A pump-action gun and a pistol were subsequently recovered from the scene.

The Eastern Regional Police PRO, Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, confirmed the incident to Accra-based Citi News, adding that the seized weapons will aid the ongoing investigation.

He assured that the police will maintain law and order throughout the festival period and warned that anyone found responsible for the violence will face the full consequences of the law.

Ekumfi breaks ground for first district police headquarters https://www.adomonline.com/ekumfi-breaks-ground-for-first-district-police-headquarters/ Sat, 13 Sep 2025 18:28:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2578273 Ekumfi has taken a historic step towards strengthening law and order with the sod-cutting ceremony for its first-ever District Police Headquarters at Ekumfi Essakyir, the district capital.

The event, held on Friday, was led by the Member of Parliament for the area, Dr Othniel Ekow Kwainoe, who described the project as a “foundation for a safer, stronger Ekumfi.”

Addressing chiefs, elders, and residents, Dr Kwainoe stressed that peace and security were essential for development. For years, the district has relied on police support from neighbouring Mankessim, Jedu, and Saltpond, often resulting in delayed responses and overstretched personnel.

The new facility, he explained, would bring policing closer to residents, ensure quicker responses to emergencies, and reassure farmers, traders, fisherfolk, and students that their safety remains a priority.

The initiative forms part of the MP’s broader vision for holistic development in Ekumfi. A day before the ceremony, Dr Kwainoe distributed 35,000 coconut seedlings to farmers under a sustainable livelihood and climate resilience programme.

He also pledged to complete the long-abandoned Essuehyia Market and outlined further community projects, including festive programmes and preparations for a grand Ekumfi Akwambo Kese celebration next year.

Traditional leaders, youth groups, women’s associations, clergy, and security officials joined in the ceremony, which was hailed as a transformative step for the district. In a symbolic act, Dr Kwainoe and the chiefs turned the soil together to mark the commencement of construction.

“Today, we are not just cutting sod,” the MP declared. “We are planting the seeds of safety, dignity, and prosperity. Together, we are building not just a Police Headquarters, but a stronger future for Ekumfi.”

With the project underway, residents of Ekumfi look forward to a renewed era of peace, security, and development.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Adu, the Regional Commander, confirmed the development to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Friday, July 25.

He said the incident occurred on Monday, July 21, at about 4:20 p.m. when officers at the Brimso Police checkpoint stopped a bus with registration number GR 8247-20 and discovered the cocoa beans hidden inside.

The driver, 42-year-old Bernard Owusu Agyemang, was unable to provide documentation for the cargo. He told police he had been directed by an individual named Martin to deliver the beans to an unnamed woman in Mankessim, providing only her phone number.

DCOP Adu said investigations are ongoing to track down the individuals behind the suspected smuggling operation.

“We will work to identify and apprehend the syndicate responsible so they face the full rigours of the law,” he said, adding that such action would serve as a deterrent to others.

He encouraged the public to volunteer credible information that could help clamp down on illegal cocoa trade, assuring that the identities of informants would be protected.

Meanwhile, the cocoa beans have been handed over to the Cape Coast office of COCOBOD for quality assessment and further action. They were received by Mr. Maxwell Ntiamoah, Principal Quality Control Officer.

CCTV captures woman allegedly stealing baby at Ajumako market [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/cctv-captures-woman-allegedly-stealing-baby-at-ajumako-market-video/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 18:03:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555716 The Ajumako District Police Command has launched a manhunt for a woman believed to be in her early 50s, who was captured on CCTV allegedly stealing an 11-month-old baby from the Ajumako market in the Central Region.

The disturbing footage, retrieved from a CCTV camera installed at the market centre, shows the woman walking away briskly with the infant after luring the baby’s caregiver into a conversation.

According to the child’s mother, Esi Sekyiwaa, she had left the baby in the care of her sister-in-law while selling cassava at the market.

The suspect reportedly approached the caregiver under the pretense of offering help, but took advantage of a moment of distraction to flee with the child.

“When I returned and asked for my baby, my sister-in-law told me the woman had taken her. We were shocked,” the distraught mother told Adom News, breaking down in tears.

Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, family members confirmed that the woman was seen leaving the market with the baby.

They suspect the woman may have come from Winneba, Apam, or Mankessim and have called on the police and the general public to help locate her and rescue the child.

The Ajumako police are appealing to anyone with relevant information to report to the nearest police station to assist with investigations.

2025 NSMQ: St Augustine’s College dominates as Central Regional championship kicks https://www.adomonline.com/2025-nsmq-st-augustines-college-dominates-as-central-regional-championship-kicks/ Wed, 09 Jul 2025 16:10:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553394 The Central Regional Championship of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) began on Wednesday, July 9, with 19 schools competing for just four available slots in tomorrow’s final.

Thirteen schools, fresh from their victories in the qualifiers, have been joined by six seeded schools, setting the stage for a fierce battle among some of the region’s brightest contenders.

In the first contest of the day, St Augustine’s College, Hope College, Nyakrom SHTS, Mfantsiman Girls, and Obiri Yeboah SHS went head-to-head in a spirited competition that drew loud cheers and strong support from the stands. The Augusco boys showed up in their numbers, and even before the contest began, they were heating up the auditorium with vibrant jama songs.

Round one saw all the schools except Mfantsiman Girls getting their first set of questions right. Nyakrom SHTS capitalized on the miss from Mfantsiman by picking the bonus and answering correctly. As the round progressed, St Augustine’s College stayed consistent, picking up both their main and bonus questions.

By the end of the first round, they had built a strong lead with 25 points. Mfantsiman Girls followed with 17 points, Nyakrom SHTS scored 14, and both Hope College and Obiri Yeboah trailed with 4 points each.

Then came the second round the speed race, where St Augustine’s truly took control. They rang for the first three questions and answered all correctly, igniting loud cheers from their supporters. No school attempted the fourth question, but Augusco returned to ring and answer the fifth.

While all schools tried their hands on the sixth, none got it right. St Augustine’s answered all but three of the questions in the round, stretching their lead significantly.

At the end of round two, St Augustine’s College had shot up to 46 points. Mfantsiman Girls, though dropping a point, remained in second with 16. Nyakrom SHTS stayed close with 14, Obiri Yeboah climbed to 12, and Hope College followed with 11. Substitutions were made across the board, except for Obiri Yeboah, who stuck with their original trio.

The third round, focused on true or false questions, saw fairly clean runs from most of the schools. Hope College and Obiri Yeboah were the only ones who made errors. At the end of the round, St Augustine’s maintained their commanding lead with 59 points, Mfantsiman rose to 34, Nyakrom moved up to 27, Hope College climbed to 21, and Obiri Yeboah stood at 20.

The contest came to a close in the final round, with St Augustine’s College sealing their dominance and grabbing the first slot of the day with 65 points. Mfantsiman Girls ended the contest with 38 points, Nyakrom SHTS scored 30, while Hope College and Obiri Yeboah wrapped up with 21 and 20 points, respectively.

NSMQ 2025: St. Francis Xavier Jnr. Seminary qualifies for nationals, but disappointed with performance https://www.adomonline.com/nsmq-2025-st-francis-xavier-jnr-seminary-qualifies-for-nationals-but-disappointed-with-performance/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 17:25:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552397 Two-time national finalists, St. Francis Xavier Junior Seminary SHS, have secured a spot at the 2025 NSMQ Championship after winning their regional qualifier in the Upper West Region, though the victory came with mixed emotions.

They finished the contest with just 22 points, ahead of Lassia Tuolu SHS and Wa Senior High Technical School, who ended with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Despite the victory, the atmosphere in the Xavieran camp was far from celebratory.

Both contestants and supporters expressed clear disappointment with the low score, describing the performance as underwhelming given the school’s national pedigree.

“We are happy we made it through, but we are disappointed with the performance; we were expecting at least 40 points at the end of the contest. We will go back, regroup, and return, hoping to make a bigger impact at the nationals,” Walter Kpankpari, a contestant, said.

Once hailed as giants from the north after their impressive runs to the finals in 2012 and in 2014, St. Francis Xavier has in recent years struggled to replicate that dominance on the national stage.

Their recent performances have seen early exits, with their best performance in the last 10 years being the quarterfinals.

The team is now looking ahead to the national championship in October, hoping to rekindle their glory days and push further into the competition.

At the SGS Auditorium on the University of Cape Coast campus, five schools battled it out for a chance to advance — and the stakes could not have been higher.

Despite trailing in second place for the first three rounds, Mankessim SHTS staged a remarkable comeback in the final round to edge past Assin State College by a narrow 2-point margin.

Mankessim SHTS set the tone early, picked up major questions, and scooped bonuses that eluded their opponents. But Assin State College did not let up either.

They dominated round one, aced all their questions, and capitalised on bonus opportunities. By the end of the round, they led with 27 points, five points ahead of Mankessim SHTS. Gomoa Gyaman SHS, Komenda SHTS, and Oguaa SHTS trailed behind with 3, 12, and 11 points respectively.

In the speed race of round two, Assin State College was quick to respond, grabbed the first question and nailed it. Komenda SHTS, Oguaa SHTS, and Mankessim SHTS got a few right too, but Assin State continued to lead with 37 points. Mankessim SHTS followed closely with 33, while the rest struggled to keep up.

The true-or-false round intensified as schools raced to secure every point they could. Assin State College held the lead at 45 points, with Mankessim SHTS breathing down their necks at 40. Komenda SHTS stood at 19, Oguaa SHTS at 17, and Gomoa Gyaman SHS at 13.

But just when it seemed settled, the final riddle round shook things up. Mankessim SHTS snatched two riddles right, stunned the crowd, and overtook Assin State College with a thrilling 2-point lead.

As the Central Regional qualifiers are unfolding, over 40 schools are locking horns for the chance to be crowned regional champions. With upsets already in motion and tensions rising, this year’s NSMQ qualifiers are proving anything but predictable and it’s only just beginning.

The tragic accident that occurred at Winneba Junction on Monday has claimed more lives, as three of the injured schoolchildren have been confirmed dead, raising the death toll to four.

The victims were among seven pupils who were being transported in a Hyundai Jet taxi with registration number CR 748-20 from Winneba to Apam. The taxi collided head-on with a Toyota RAV4, registration number GN 5505-18, shortly after the junction on the Winneba–Mankessim highway.

The initial crash killed the taxi driver instantly. Nine others, including the schoolchildren, were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for treatment.

According to the Winneba Municipal Fire Commander, DO2 Fredrick Adu-Roku, three of the critically injured pupils passed away early Tuesday morning despite medical efforts to save them. The children were identified as students of St. Paul’s School and Uncle Rich Preparatory School, both located in Winneba.

DO2 Adu-Roku confirmed in an interview with Adom News that the accident occurred when the Toyota RAV4 attempted an overtaking manoeuvre, resulting in the fatal collision.

He emphasised that wrongful overtaking remains one of the major causes of road accidents in Ghana. “About 70 percent of road accidents recorded in the country are due to human error,” he said, urging drivers to obey road signs and traffic regulations to prevent needless deaths.

On the day of the incident, June 23, 2025, fire personnel from the Winneba Fire Station, led by STNO II Nyarko, arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving the distress call and extricated the lifeless body of the taxi driver from the mangled vehicle.

The Hyundai Jet taxi was completely destroyed, while the Toyota RAV4 sustained serious front-end damage.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.

The accident involved a Hyundai Dawod taxi with registration number CR 748-20 and a Toyota RAV4 bearing registration GN 5505-18.

According to eyewitness accounts and emergency responders, the crash occurred when a Sprinter Benz bus made a reckless overtaking, causing confusion on the road.

The Toyota RAV4, which was heading toward Winneba from Mankessim, reportedly attempted to avoid the oncoming Sprinter bus and veered into the path of the taxi.

The resulting head-on collision was devastating, with the taxi driver dying instantly.

The taxi was said to be transporting school children from Winneba to Apam at the time of the crash. All injured victims were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Medical personnel have described the condition of three of the children as critical.

The Ghana National Fire Service, which responded to the distress call, confirmed the sequence of events and noted that investigations are underway to locate the Sprinter bus and its driver, who reportedly fled the scene.
