The Elections Committee has approved 62 aspirants to contest various national and regional positions.

Thirteen candidates, including incumbent executives, are vying for national positions, while 49 others are contesting regional roles, following a thorough vetting process and a review of petitions against some aspirants.

Current President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, is seeking re-election against media trainer and consultant Charles Yao Mawusi.

Volta NPP grassroots declare support for Bryan Acheampong’s flagbearer bid https://www.adomonline.com/volta-npp-grassroots-declare-support-for-bryan-acheampongs-flagbearer-bid/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 20:10:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548805 In a significant political development within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a group comprising polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, and branch executives in the Volta Region has endorsed the candidacy of Abetifi MP, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, for the party’s presidential primaries.

At a press conference in Ho, the group expressed their commitment to rally behind the former Minister for Food and Agriculture.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the Ho Central Women’s Organiser, Thelma Adzimah, described Dr. Acheampong as “a visionary, disciplined, and results-oriented leader who embodies the spirit of the next generation of NPP leadership.”

According to the executives, Dr. Acheampong is a leader who listens, respects the base, and consistently works to strengthen party structures—even at times when others stayed away.

“We, the grassroots of the NPP, declare: Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong is our choice, our hope, and our trusted leader. Let no one ignore the grassroots again — the future of the party depends on us.”

They indicated that Dr. Acheampong’s track record speaks for itself.

“He has empowered communities through initiatives such as borehole construction, farm inputs, and educational support. He has demonstrated his commitment to promoting education, healthcare, hospitality, and economic empowerment.

“He values the role of polling station executives, coordinators, and constituency leaders in building a winning party,” they lauded.

Meanwhile, they cautioned all presidential hopefuls, national executives, and former appointees against neglecting the grassroots, who are the true owners and builders of the NPP.

“The party’s success also relies on the polling station executives, foot soldiers, and coordinators who drive its machinery at the community level. Don’t overlook their importance.

“We call on all presidential hopefuls to engage directly with the grassroots and avoid assuming that endorsements from former government appointees represent the base.

“We urge the national leadership to conduct a free, fair, and transparent internal electioneering process that reflects the true will of party members. We appeal to all stakeholders to put party unity and grassroots empowerment above personal ambition,” they stated.

No single faction can win 2028 Election for NPP; we must unite – Former MP warns [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/no-single-faction-can-win-2028-election-for-npp-we-must-unite-former-mp-warns-audio/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 12:03:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548632 Former Subin Member of Parliament, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has warned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot reclaim power in the 2028 general elections if it relies on the efforts of individual factions instead of promoting unity.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the former Deputy Minister for Works and Housing stressed the need for collaboration among all party stakeholders, cautioning that internal divisions could derail the party’s chances.

“Former President Kufuor said it all—when you are given power temporarily, it doesn’t mean you own the party. I believe in a tradition, not a faction, because a camp or faction cannot win power,” he stated.

He added, “None of the presidential aspirants’ camps, including Bawumia, Ken, Joe Ghartey, Adutwum, Bryan Acheampong—none of them can single-handedly secure power for us unless we unite.”

Mr. Antwi described the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections as a necessary wake-up call and urged the party to prioritise internal healing and reform.

“We must fix ourselves first. We need to reconnect with the people and rebuild the trust of Ghanaians,” he said.

He further called for a return to the party’s foundational principles.

“We must realign our party with the values of the founding fathers. We must revisit the traditions and ideologies on which the party was built,” he urged.

Are we going to build a skyscraper? – Nana B questions Arthur Kennedy [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/are-we-going-to-build-a-skyscraper-nana-b-questions-arthur-kennedy-audio/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 10:15:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548502 National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has responded to Dr. Arthur Kennedy’s concerns about the timing of the party’s presidential primaries.

Following the NPP’s announcement to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, Dr. Kennedy questioned the decision, asking, “Why pick it in early 2026 when you could wait till mid-2027 or late 2027?”

He argued that the party’s internal discourse had reached a boiling point, and selecting a flagbearer at this stage might be premature and potentially disastrous.

However, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana B, who disagreed with Dr. Kennedy’s stance, described the move as a success for the party.

According to him, the NPP’s structures are already firmly in place, and it is misleading to liken the party to a building under construction.

“Are we going to build a house? The NPP structure is already there, so what are we going to build? Are we going to build a skyscraper?” he quizzed.

Nana B argued that 99% of the tensions and internal wrangling within the party stem from the presidential primaries.

“The comparison with a building is totally unacceptable because nobody has said after the presidential primaries, we will hold national, regional, constituency, and polling station elections. We only agreed on the presidential,” he stated.

NPP MPs must remain neutral – Minority Leader, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Arthur Kennedy share views https://www.adomonline.com/npp-mps-must-remain-neutral-minority-leader-kyei-mensah-bonsu-arthur-kennedy-share-views/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 09:35:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548498 The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has advised members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament to remain neutral to foster a sense of unity among the rank and file after the party’s post-flagbearer elections on January 31, 2026.

He said as Members of Parliament (MPs), they were supposed to toe the middle ground, hold the party together, and not take sides openly.

“My view is that we should be very neutral in all this so that after the primary, we can bring all sides on board and be the advocate for peace,” the Minority Leader told the Daily Graphic in an exclusive interview.

We need unity

Sharing his perspective on the decision by some NPP MPs to support the flagbearer aspirants ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31, next year, Afenyo-Markin said: “If care is not taken, you, the MP yourself, becomes a target after the primary because somebody may not be happy the way you went about your campaign”.

“You may have your views alright, but it is important to remain neutral so that all candidates can reach out to you in difficulty, especially after the primaries because we need the unity of the party,” he said.

Time to show love

The Minority Leader postulated that NPP MPs, as well as supporters of the party, must also act with caution as the party was getting ready for the next presidential primary.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said if they supported any particular candidate, they must sell the brand of the candidate instead of insulting opponents.

“It does not help the good of democracy; what does your candidate stand for, his vision for the party and the country?” he said quizzically.

“To me, these are matters that matter, not the name-calling because in the world of politics, there is no perfect candidate,” the Minority Leader said.

He explained that in politics what mattered the most was the vision of a candidate as well as the group vision that “we will rally around and get into the elections”.

Asked what would be his advice for MPs who might decline to remain neutral, the Minority Leader persisted in entreating members of the caucus to exercise extreme caution in the manner they carried themselves.

“Be measured in your utterances so as to make it easy for post-primary reconciliation, where you yourselves will partake in. Because, definitely in post-election reconciliation, MPs will play a vital role,” he stated.

It is the time for us to show love and stay together,” Afenyo-Markin entreated.

“If you cannot adhere to my advice of being neutral and you want to show face, it is within your right, but be measured and put up a posture that will promote reconciliation,” the Leader of the Minority caucus added.

Guard against trust deficit

Using himself as an example, Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had personally restrained himself because he wanted to keep a good relationship with all flagbearer aspirants.

He said as a member of the NPP National Steering Committee and a member of the various organs of the party involved in decision-making, “if I am not seen to be neutral, I will suffer some trust deficit”.

The MP for Effutu also touted how being neutral in politics had allowed him to become a member of the Professor Mike Oquaye Committee that organised the party’s presidential primary in 2023.

“I was there in the committee because members trusted in our judgement of neutrality, and nobody objected to Prof. Oquaye being in charge of the presidential election committee.

“I was there and we received complaints and resolved every challenge that came and drew up the guidelines for elections,” he said, adding that “so, I would want to draw on that experience to continue to play same role again”.

As the Leader of the NPP Caucus in Parliament, Mr Afenyo-Markin added that his ultimate goal was for the party to win the next general election; therefore, “we in Parliament must do our work to demonstrate to the nation that the NPP is ready”.

“But to be ready means reforms as proposed and at delegates’ conference we will be able to firm up the direction we want to go by way of the kind of reforms we want,” he said.

Early presidential primary

On the issue of early flagbearer primary, the Minority Leader said the NPP constitution envisaged a situation where the party conducted early presidential contest while in opposition.

He, therefore, said he did not have any problem with the proposal by the Constitutional Review Committee, chaired by Frank Davies, and set up by National Council to push for early primary on January 31, next year.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said that notwithstanding, such a decision was subject to the annual delegates’ conference, made up of all the grassroots polling stations, constituency and regional executives, set for July 19, 2025, to confirm it.

“So, whatever the proposal may be, it would be sent to conference for confirmation,” he said.

Speed up internal organisation

Regarding the organisation of the NPP, the MP for Effutu said he was of the strong view that while the party desired to have an early presidential contest, the party should equally speed up its internal organisation.

He said the party should ensure that it organised all the internal structures to be ready for the flagbearer primary, “so that whoever wins can ride on the cohesion at the grassroots”.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu supports

For his part, the former MP for Suame in the Ashanti Region, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who also served as the Majority Leader in the Eighth Parliament, defended the party’s decision to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026.

According to him, the National Council, the party’s highest decision-making body, has the authority to set the date, and the early election would promote peace within the party.

“NPP has done this before,” he said, and cited the 2012 example where the party elected its presidential candidate two years ahead of the election.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasised that the party’s constitution granted the National Council the power to make such decisions.

The party’s National Executive Committee and National Council made the decision to hold the presidential primary on January 31, 2026, after a crucial meeting on June 17, 2025.

Nominations for the primary are expected to open from December 2 to 6, 2025.

Arthur Kennedy disagrees

A member of the NPP, Dr Arthur Kennedy, expressed concern over the party’s decision to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026, to elect its flag bearer for the 2028 general election.

He said the party’s internal discourse had reached a boiling point, and the decision to pick a flagbearer at this time might be premature.

Dr Kennedy said this in an interview with the Daily Graphic.

“Traditionally, the NPP, at least since the time of B.J. Da Rocha, a founding member and first National Chairman, has always felt that right after a presidential election, there is the need for renewal of the mandate by all party executives, starting from the polling station all the way to the national level,” he explained.

He added that the tradition had been respected all the way to Peter Mac Manu’s tenure as the National Chairman.

Mandate

Dr Kennedy stressed that it was necessary for the party executives to first renew their mandate.

That, he said, was essential for the party’s growth and effectiveness.

The campaign manager for former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2008 questioned the timing of the flagbearer election, saying, “Why pick it in early 2026 when you could wait till mid-2027 or late 2027?”

“Election issues are not static. So, for example, the issues that are salient now may not be salient in 2028. So, most parties, out of pragmatism, wait until as close to the election as possible to pick their candidates,” he suggested.

He cited examples from other countries, such as the US, where parties often waited until close to the election to pick their candidates, allowing them to respond to changing electoral dynamics to buttress his point.

Dr Kennedy also stressed the importance of adopting a more democratic approach to the party’s primary elections, advocating a system where all party members could vote.

“The logical end of all this is letting everybody who is a party member to vote,” he said.

That would help prevent the buying of delegates and ensure the true voice of the party’s rank and file was heard, he added.

Constitution

The NPP constitution under Article 13(1)(1) provides that the date and venue for the election of the party’s Presidential Candidate shall be decided by the National Council of the party.

Article 13 (1) of the party’s Constitution says the election of the party’s Presidential Candidate shall be held not later than twenty-four (24) months from the date of the national election. The date and venue for the election shall be decided by the National Council, provided, however, that the National Council may, on appropriate occasion, vary the date.

Article 13 (2) says not later than six (6) months prior to the holding of the election, the General Secretary shall give notice inviting applications from members for nomination as the party’s candidate to contest for the office of President of the Republic.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, the NDC Chairman did not mince words.

“There has to be a change,” he insisted. “The three top leadership must all go. They have managed the commission so badly.”

Mr Asiedu Nketia said the Electoral Co

The NDC Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says the Electoral Commission has failed in its core duty of managing credible elections.

He pointed to what he described as a worrying pattern of electoral mismanagement under the current leadership.

“You cannot still be having an election that ends in a stalemate. There is no anticipation of any stalemate in our laws unless people don’t want to do their work well,” he said.

“It’s a clear case of negligence or inability to perform its functions.”

Referencing the unresolved parliamentary election in Ablekuma North, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the situation was just the latest in a series of failures by the Jean Mensa-led Commission.

“Six months after the election, and we still don’t have an elected MP. That must tell you something is wrong,” he stated.

The NDC Chairman argued that the problem is not isolated.

He recalled the disenfranchisement of the SALL constituency during the 2020 general elections and claimed that the EC has not conducted a single satisfactory election since taking office.

“This Commission, as presently constituted, took over the reins of the Electoral Commission, and they have never conducted a satisfactory election.

“First, it was SALL. A whole constituency went unrepresented for four years. Now, it’s Ablekuma North. And the Ayawaso West by-election? Everything has been messed up,” he said.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia stressed the need for the country to “reset” the EC and restore it as a credible institution.

“Resetting the EC means bringing it back to an institution that is fit for purpose,” he explained. “The way it exists now, it is not fit for purpose.”

He warned that keeping the current leadership undermines Ghana’s democratic credibility.

“If in any serious country we want to maintain this type of Electoral Commission, then I don’t know what the country is about,” he said.

Sylvester Tetteh eyes NPP General Secretary role https://www.adomonline.com/sylvester-tetteh-eyes-npp-general-secretary-role/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 09:04:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548011 The former Member of Parliament for Bortianor‑Ngleshie Amanfro, Sylvester Tetteh, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The former Deputy Information Minister made the declaration over the weekend at a constituency chairmen’s workshop in the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Tetteh stated that he is poised to provide the bold, innovative, and pragmatic leadership the NPP needs ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“The NPP needs innovation, energy, and unity – and I am ready to serve.

“I have made up my mind to contest for the General Secretary position of our great party. The time has come to inject new energy, innovative ideas, and strategic thinking into the administrative leadership of the NPP,” he said in an interview on Nhyira FM’s Kukurantumi.

He emphasised the need to build a strong, united party grounded in effective communication, grassroots mobilisation, and youth engagement.

The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA) further pledged to campaign with civility and decorum, stressing that passion must not compromise the party’s stability.

Bryan Acheampong spiritually fortified, unshaken by intimidation – Campaign Team https://www.adomonline.com/bryan-acheampong-spiritually-fortified-unshaken-by-intimidation-campaign-team/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 19:24:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547900 A key campaign official for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong says the aspirant remains spiritually fortified and undeterred by any attempts at fear or intimidation as the party’s presidential primaries draw closer.

Andy Appiah-Kubi, a legal practitioner and senior member of Dr. Acheampong’s team, stated that the former Minister for Food and Agriculture has received spiritual reinforcement from respected clergy and is embarking on his presidential journey with divine assurance.

“How would we be threatened when we have started with our belief in God, having obtained the fortification, the spiritual guidance, and the blessings of the Lord to start a journey that takes us nearly eight months? Victory is only waiting for us,” Mr. Appiah-Kubi said.

He emphasized that the team is not intimidated by the strength or stature of any opponent.

“We will not be intimidated by anybody’s presence, nor are we going to consider how strong somebody is,” he added.

Dr. Acheampong recently visited the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, where he received prayers and blessings ahead of the formal launch of his presidential campaign.

His entry into the race adds momentum to an already competitive contest. Other notable aspirants include former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

The NPP’s presidential primary is scheduled for January 2026, as the party prepares to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections following its 2024 defeat.

Bryan Acheampong declares intention to contest NPP flagbearership race https://www.adomonline.com/bryan-acheampong-declares-intention-to-contest-npp-flagbearership-race/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 19:18:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547877 Abetifi Member of Parliament, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has begun engaging key stakeholders as part of efforts to officially communicate his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race ahead of the 2028 elections.

At a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture formally announced his presidential ambition.

Speaking to journalists, Dr. Acheampong said his decision followed consultations and feedback gathered by an exploratory team that assessed the sentiments of NPP delegates across the country.

“A decision has been made that I will contest when the party opens nominations,” he stated. “But to do that, as a product of the church, it will be a disappointment per my tradition if the Moderator of the Church hears it for the first time on the radio.”

“So before a formal announcement is made, I thought it wise to come and inform the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church that this is what I have set out to do,” he added.

The church leadership, in response, prayed for him and offered words of encouragement for the journey ahead.

Even before his formal announcement, some former NPP Members of Parliament and government appointees had already declared their support for Dr. Acheampong’s bid.

His declaration adds to a growing list of aspirants, including former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, who have all expressed interest in contesting the NPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Why Bawumia deserves a second chance – Nana Akomea [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/why-bawumia-deserves-a-second-chance-nana-akomea-audio/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 16:29:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547807 The Vice Chairman of the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, Nana Akomea says former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia deserves another opportunity to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

While acknowledging the party’s poor performance in the 2024 general election, Nana Akomea admitted that Dr. Bawumia must bear some responsibility — but insists that should not disqualify him from leading the NPP again.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Nana Akomea argued that Dr. Bawumia gave his all during the campaign and deserves a second chance.

“We all worked and supported him to become the presidential candidate through to the general election, and I know the kind of work he did. He toured all 275 constituencies, and I don’t believe any flagbearer has done that,” he said.

“If you don’t work hard, that’s when we say you didn’t perform. But if you give your best and it doesn’t go well, you deserve a second chance,” he added.

The former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC) also dismissed claims that Dr. Bawumia contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2024 election. Citing the report from the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led review committee, he said the document did not apportion blame to Dr. Bawumia.

His comments come weeks after former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, argued that the NPP does not offer second chances to underperforming candidates. As Dr. Bawumia’s main contender in the 2024 NPP presidential primaries, Kennedy insisted that the party traditionally supports candidates with strong electoral results.

Dr. Bawumia lost the 2024 election to President Mahama, who secured an overwhelming 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) compared to Dr. Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) not only reclaimed the presidency but also won a commanding majority in Parliament, capturing over 180 seats, including several traditional NPP strongholds.

Since the defeat, the NPP has largely attributed its loss to voter apathy and low turnout among its support base.

Nana Akomea’s appeal adds to the growing internal debate over the party’s leadership direction ahead of the next electoral cycle.

No one knows who funds our Presidents’ campaigns – Yaw Nsarkoh https://www.adomonline.com/no-one-knows-who-funds-our-presidents-campaigns-yaw-nsarkoh/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 06:36:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547528 Former Executive Vice President of Unilever Ghana and Nigeria, Yaw Nsarkoh, has cut to the core of what he sees as a dangerous defect in Ghana’s democratic architecture.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Nsarkoh did not mince words as he lamented the systemic opacity of political financing in Ghana, saying, “No one knows who funds our presidents.”

“We don’t know how much the sitting president spent on his campaign. We don’t know how much his main opponent spent either,” he said. “These are starting questions. I haven’t even gotten to the source.”

The former Unilever executive’s frustration was palpable.

“In other democracies, these things are known. Even in America, we know how much a presidential candidate raised. Sometimes it’s on TV. You sit there and hear: this person has raised X million dollars,” he said. “Why don’t we know the same in Ghana?”

He linked this democratic blind spot to what he called a “Santa Claus democracy,” a system where elections have become transactional, driven by untraceable money and unchecked influence.

“It’s a public auction for the highest bidder,” he declared. “The electorate is reduced to ballots. They are no longer participants in governance.”

Mr. Nsarkoh’s comments came on the heels of his hard-hitting lecture titled “Iniquities of Iniquity in Our Santa Claus Democracy” at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

There, he argued that Ghana’s democratic transition in the early 1990s was reluctant and superficial, referencing the late political scientist Claude Ake’s seminal work The Feasibility of Democracy in Africa.

“Ake used Ghana as an example of a reluctant transition. We opened up space just enough to say the forms of democracy were in place. But the substance? That’s where we’ve failed,” Nsarkoh said.

He blamed the failure to institutionalise political financing as the root of a corrupt ecosystem.

“There are no real frameworks to track political fund flows. That’s why I say this is the root of all evil,” he emphasised.

And the consequences, he warned, are profound.

“If you and I are in the drug trade, we can carry sacks of money and fund people who will become powerful actors. Then the demands start: put this person here, appoint that person there.

“It doesn’t have to be the candidate who wins — it can be the kingmakers. And once they’re in place, the rot spreads,” he said.

According to Mr. Nsarkoh, this is not unique to Ghana.

“These are not just Ghanaian features. These are systemic defects we see across the continent. Yet, instead of confronting the design issues, we personalise the debate. We make it about individuals,” he said.

“Yes, personalities matter. Accountability matters. But after three and a half decades, we must admit the system itself is broken.”

He urged media professionals, civil society, and citizens to demand answers.

“You are the media guy,” he told the host. “You probably have more access than I. But even you — can you tell me where the money came from? That’s the problem.”

To Yaw Nsarkoh, democracy without transparency is democracy in name only.

“If we can’t trace money in politics, then our democracy is not a tool for development. It’s a mechanism for elite enrichment,” he said.

Bawumia’s camp creating false sense of support with staged endorsements – Kwasi Kwarteng https://www.adomonline.com/bawumias-camp-creating-false-sense-of-support-with-staged-endorsements-kwasi-kwarteng/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 16:57:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547449 Spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign, Kwasi Kwarteng, says the team is unbothered by claims from the camp of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that over 200 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have endorsed his bid to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, June 23, Mr. Kwarteng said such endorsements are not new and do not necessarily translate into electoral victory.

“It is good for them [the Bawumia camp], we wish them well if indeed they believe they have over 200 MMDCEs. I’m sure the election day will vindicate that position.”

He criticised what he described as a deliberate tactic to stage endorsements and create a false sense of widespread support.

“It was a similar practice done during the last elections that directly convinced polling station executives to vote for Dr. Bawumia, and we all saw the outcome.”

Mr. Kwarteng further stated that the former Assin Central MP’s campaign approach is focused on the grassroots.

“Our focus is to engage over 200,000 polling station executives. We are confident that they will make a determination on who they believe should lead the party — a candidate who is marketable, winnable, and can unite the party.”

He continued, “But I know that this time around, they will not make a decision and elect a candidate that is not marketable, elect a candidate that is not winnable, elect a candidate that will not be able to unite the party. I know that this time around, they will not make that decision. So it is left for them [the Bawumia camp] to lie to themselves that they have been endorsed by these MMDCEs.”

His comments come after more than 200 former MMDCEs met former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday, as the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general election heats up.

The meeting, which took place at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, came just days after Dr. Bawumia hosted over 60 NPP Members of Parliament at his campaign office, where they publicly declared their support for his bid to become the party’s flagbearer.

The former MMDCEs, who served under previous NPP administrations, reportedly discussed strategies and declared their support for Dr. Bawumia ahead of the crucial internal presidential primary slated for January 2026.

Manasseh Azure declares support for Dr Bawumia in NPP flagbearer race https://www.adomonline.com/manasseh-azure-declares-support-for-dr-bawumia-in-npp-flagbearer-race/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 13:15:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547324 Journalist Manasseh Azure has publicly declared his support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the New Patriotic Party’s upcoming presidential primaries, citing the Vice President’s leadership potential and comparative strengths over other contenders.

In a personal commentary, the journalist said he has never claimed political neutrality and has previously stated his interest in who governs Ghana.

“I’m a citizen of Ghana before being a journalist. I vote. And I care who becomes president,” he wrote.

He revealed that he voted for the NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016 after supporting John Mahama in 2012, but explained that Mahama had not earned his vote for a second term.

Although he abstained from voting in the 2024 elections, the journalist said Ghana’s democracy requires strong opposition leadership and credible alternatives heading into 2028.

He expressed concern that an NPP victory in 2024 would have signaled a tolerance for impunity, but noted that many Ghanaians shared his view and acted to hold the party accountable.

With the NPP now set to elect a new leader, he stated that Dr. Bawumia stands out “by miles” among the current contenders.

“Even if I end up not voting for Bawumia, it is in the interest of our democracy that the opposition elects a strong, level-headed candidate,” he noted.

He acknowledged Bawumia’s role in the current administration but argued that this should not disqualify him outright, especially considering the weaknesses of his internal opponents.

The journalist also ranked former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, as his second preference, adding that his first choice would have been Dr. Yaw Adutwum, had he not been a minister.

He concluded that Bawumia represents the NPP’s best hope of fielding a unifying and formidable candidate ahead of the 2028 general election.

Speaking at the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, June 21, the former Minister of Food and Agriculture stated unequivocally that his bid is not symbolic.

“I’m not here to test the waters. I’m here for power,” he told party faithful.

Dr. Acheampong touted his political experience, highlighting years of service from the grassroots level through to his current role in Parliament and past cabinet position.

He said the time has come to usher the NPP into a “new era,” one that he believes he is well-positioned to lead.

Amid cheers and chants from the crowd, one supporter was heard saying, “This is not just about Bryan. It’s about building strength together as a party.”

The NPP is expected to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, setting the stage for what is shaping up to be a heated internal contest.

Dr. Acheampong joins a growing list of contenders, including former Education Minister and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.

It’s a shame – NPP laments delay in Ablekuma North election result https://www.adomonline.com/its-a-shame-npp-laments-delay-in-ablekuma-north-election-result/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 06:59:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546547 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed deep frustration over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) continued delay in declaring the parliamentary results for the Ablekuma North Constituency—six months after the 2024 general election.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, the NPP’s Director of Elections, Evans Nimako, described the situation as unacceptable and an embarrassment to Ghana’s democratic process.

“We do not see why it is difficult for the Electoral Commission to complete this exercise. It is not the best. It is a shame that we do not have a Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North,” he lamented.

Mr. Nimako also raised concerns about the lack of accountability for the violence and destruction that disrupted the collation process on December 8, 2024.

“What is intriguing is that on the day of collation, on the 8th of December 2024, some men decided to destroy electoral materials, yet the police have been unable to arrest and conduct investigations to prosecute these people, and that for me is a big shame,” he stated.

The delay stems from unresolved results from three out of the 281 polling stations in the constituency, which have stalled the final declaration.

Both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have since laid claim to victory in what has become one of the most contentious races of the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Tensions escalated on January 8, 2025, when the constituency’s Returning Officer resigned following a standoff over discrepancies in some pink sheets.

Since then, the EC has suspended the collation process seven times, citing security concerns amid mounting confrontations between supporters of the two major parties.

The Commission has maintained that it intends to complete the collation of the remaining polling station results before considering any re-run—a step it describes as a last resort.

Bawumia thanks NPP MPs for flagbearer endorsement https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-thanks-npp-mps-for-flagbearer-endorsement/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 19:51:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546466 Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed immense gratitude to a group of NPP Members of Parliament who have declared their support for him to be retained as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections.

On Thursday morning, about 67 MPs called on Dr. Bawumia at his office in Accra to formally declare their backing.

Speaking to the media after the visit, Dr. Bawumia described the gesture as a “strong show of support” from key stakeholders within the party, particularly at the grassroots level.

“It was a visit from our Members of Parliament and I think that it was a very happy visit—a courtesy call and a declaration of support for me. I’m so happy. The group from Parliament that has declared support for me now amounts to over 60 Members of Parliament. And you know we have 88 MPs, so that tells you that a very significant number have declared their support,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“This is a strong show of support and I thank them, and I thank God for this. Off we go.”

He emphasized the importance of the MPs’ endorsement, pointing out their influence across constituencies.

“I believe that this is going to be very important because Members of Parliament, as you know, control the constituencies to a large extent—and I’m very happy for what they’ve done today.”

While expressing his appreciation, Dr. Bawumia also urged the MPs to roll up their sleeves and get to work to help both the NPP and the nation.

“Off we go. There is a lot of hard work to be done to help the party and to help the country,” he added.

According to the Bosmotwe Member of Parliament(MP), he will pick the form when nominations are opened by the party.

He made his intentions known in a national broadcast on Wednesday evening.

“I believe the confidence that was reposed in me and the support during my tenure as Education Minister will not wither. I believe delegates and Ghanaians will give me that same support to help me emerge victorious,” he said.

Delivering his address, he expressed his appreciation to former President Nana Akufo-Addo for the opportunity to serve the people of Ghana under his tenure.

Bosomtwe Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has subtly hinted at his intention to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.

The former Education Minister stated that he sees many opportunities in Ghana and believes it will take a determined and competent leader to fully harness them.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Adutwum declared that he has no doubt he possesses the qualities needed to drive Ghana’s development.

“Your vision must scare you—if not, you are not changing your country. You are setting a growth rate that is so high, but that is what the economists are telling you you must have to develop your country.

“Then you are looking for people who are competent, fully determined that the course of the history of their nation will be better because they came—and with that sense of determination, I have no doubt in my mind,” he stated.

He added that in the coming days, he will address the lingering question on the minds of many Ghanaians to clear all doubts.

“I have no doubt in my mind that opportunities abound. To what extent can we utilise them? How are we using the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA)? The Chinese are promising to give us free tariffs—how are we going to use that? In any country, we would have had guidance centres,” he said.

Dr. Adutwum also revealed plans to convert the Business Resource Centres, established by former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, into “Prosperity Centres” to provide solutions and guidance to promote economic growth.

Although he has yet to officially declare his intent, former NPP Chairman for the Fomena Constituency, Kwasi Nti, recently endorsed him as the best candidate.

This open declaration—made on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem show—has attracted public attention, especially given that Kwasi Nti is widely known to be politically aligned with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who was Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate in the 2024 elections.

Former MMDCEs petition NPP National Council over voting rights https://www.adomonline.com/former-mmdces-petition-npp-national-council-over-voting-rights/ Sat, 14 Jun 2025 16:34:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2544706

A group of pro-New Patriotic Party(NPP) former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have petitioned the National Council, seeking voting rights in all internal elections.

This petition adds to the growing calls for an expansion of the NPP’s electoral college to allow inclusivity while maintaining the integrity of the party’s structure, to foster a sense of ownership, reduce apathy, and strengthen democracy within the party.

The letter dated June 12 and copied to all Regional Chairmen and NPP General Secretary, Justin Koduah, was jointly signed by former Gomoa East MP, Solomon Darko-Quarm and former Achiase DCE, Richmond Amponsah.

The group are calling on the party to recognise their contributions and accord them full participation rights in the internal democratic processes.

“Extending voting rights to MMDCEs at all levels would serve as a significant motivation for them to contribute more to the party’s growth and success,” the statement added.

They argued that recognising MMDCEs as voters would enable the party to tap into their “wealth of experience and resources to reorganise for victory.”

They also emphasised the historical role of MMDCEs in electoral successes, touting their contributions as former constituency and regional officers during the 2016 landslide victory.

With the party now in opposition and navigating a challenging political climate, the group argues that former MMDCEs are poised to become vital financial and logistical supporters in their constituencies ahead of the 2028 elections.

Parliament summons EC Chair over Ablekuma North election result https://www.adomonline.com/parliament-summons-ec-chair-over-ablekuma-north-election-result/ Fri, 13 Jun 2025 16:43:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2544518 Parliament has summoned the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, to appear before the House next week regarding the unresolved Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.

The announcement was made by the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, during the presentation of the Business Statement on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 13.

According to Mr. Ayariga, Mrs. Mensa is expected to appear before a Committee of the Whole to respond to two key questions related to the electoral standoff in the constituency.

“The Electoral Commission will be asked two questions, so the EC Chair will appear before the Committee of the Whole to answer them,” he stated.

In addition, the Ministers for the Interior, and Works and Housing and Water Resources, are scheduled to brief the House on Wednesday, June 18, on the recent flooding incidents across the country and measures being taken to mitigate them.

The declaration of results in the Ablekuma North parliamentary race has been stalled due to incomplete results from three out of 281 polling stations. This has sparked fierce disputes between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), both of whom are claiming victory.

Tensions peaked on January 8, 2025, when the Returning Officer resigned following disagreements over pink sheet discrepancies. Since then, the EC has suspended the process seven times amid escalating confrontations between supporters of both parties.

Meanwhile, both the NDC candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, and the NPP’s Akua Afriyie have erected ‘thank you’ billboards, each asserting a win.

The saga of the scanned pink sheets and the battle for Ablekuma North https://www.adomonline.com/the-saga-of-the-scanned-pink-sheets-and-the-battle-for-ablekuma-north/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 12:29:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543682 Why is hot air gushing out like putrid exhaust fumes?

Who are those strutting their stuff in the hot sun, attempting to annex a seat that does not belong to them?

Amid the tantrums, where is the voice of the arbiter?

Where is the bell of the institution mandated to deal fairly with all sides and bring an end to the seeming stalemate?

Where is the voice of decision-making?

We all watch from the sidelines, not wanting to be accused of interfering with the constitutional mandate of the referee—wishing to be perceived as bastions of democracy who do not interfere with the authority of an EC Chairperson who dances kpanlogo to the sound of the fontomfrom drums.

But the voice of the people must be heard on the soil of Ablekuma North. The cry of her constituents must be regarded by the matriarchs and patriarchs of the land.

The whip must be cracked by the spirit of the nation. The scales of Lady Justice must stand balanced, even as her blindfold signifies the absence of bias.

So let us all speak. Let us tell the EC that enough is enough. Let us tell Jean Mensa to declare a re-run in the sixty-two (62) polling stations of the Ablekuma North Constituency for peace to prevail.

REWIND

On December 7 and 8, 2024, violence at the Ablekuma North collation centre led to the destruction of a number of carbonated pink sheets.

Subsequently, carbonated pink sheets were used to collate results from 219 out of the 281 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

At that point, there were no more carbonated pink sheets—neither from the EC, the NDC, nor the NPP—to continue the collation exercise.

The NPP then attempted to present scanned pink sheets to proceed with the collation.

Dr. Benjamin Bannor Bio, EC Director of Elections, declared that scanned pink sheets would not be accepted.

However, on January 5, 2025, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, EC Director for Training, changed the directive and instructed the Returning Officer to accept the NPP’s scanned pink sheets.

On what authority does a Director for Training overturn the decision of the Director of Elections at this critical stage of the electoral process?

Subsequently, 42 scanned pink sheets were wrongfully accepted by the EC for collation—despite serious opposition from the NDC.

Then, in a swift change of tactics, on January 6, 2025, thirteen (13) Ablekuma North Presiding Officers who oversaw some of the remaining polling stations during the December 7 election were brought by the EC to the collation centre to validate the NPP’s scanned pink sheets.

On January 8, four (4) more presiding officers were brought in.

Yet, some of these 17 Presiding Officers were unable to validate the results on the scanned pink sheets for their respective polling stations.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

  1. Is it lawful—or part of EC training—to use scanned pink sheets from one political party to collate election results, when both the EC and the other party have no carbonated pink sheets to validate those figures?

  2. In such a situation, is it fair for the EC to declare the election in favour of the political party that provided the scanned pink sheets?

  3. What kind of audacity makes this acceptable?

  4. How can the EC claim, in a bold-faced lie, that the decision to accept the scanned pink sheets was unanimously agreed upon by all parties?

The swashbuckling display led by the EC Chairperson and her two deputies is not acceptable.

No ground stomping, no walk from Timbuktu to Accra, no swimming through shark-filled oceans, no unpalatable grunting from a wounded elephant and its associates, will ever make what is wrong… right.

Adukwei, order a re-run in the sixty-two (62) polling stations of Ablekuma North where NPP scanned pink sheets were used for collation… and stop wasting our time with diabolic drama.

I am for peace.

Shalom.

You want to worry me – Bawumia tells Bryan Acheampong https://www.adomonline.com/you-want-to-worry-me-bawumia-tells-bryan-acheampong/ Mon, 09 Jun 2025 17:00:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542894 It was a moment of joy and political intrigue as former Vice President and 2024 NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, shared pleasantries with former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, at the funeral of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, over the weekend.

A brief video from the event that has since gone viral captures Dr. Bawumia jokingly telling the Abetifi MP, “You want to worry me,” prompting laughter among those nearby.

The comment has sparked speculation, with many interpreting it as a subtle reference to the 2028 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership race. Dr. Acheampong is widely believed to be nursing ambitions to contest.

Although the NPP is yet to officially open nominations, several prominent names have emerged as potential contenders. These include former Assin Central MP and 2024 flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong.

While Dr. Bawumia is tipped to seek re-election should the opportunity arise, Kennedy Agyapong appears unconvinced, pointing to the NPP’s 2024 electoral performance.

Speaking to party supporters at Mampong, Mr. Agyapong stated, “The NPP doesn’t give second chances to candidates who fail to deliver. We didn’t do it for Adu Boahen, and we shouldn’t do it now.”

As the party quietly sets the stage for the next leadership contest, the weekend’s funeral became more than a moment of mourning—it offered a glimpse into the early maneuvers of 2028.

NPP doesn’t give second chance to non-performing candidates – Kennedy Agyapong https://www.adomonline.com/npp-doesnt-give-second-chance-to-non-performing-candidates-kennedy-agyapong/ Mon, 09 Jun 2025 07:34:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542687 Former Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, has stated that the party does not reward poor electoral performance with second chances, particularly in selecting a flagbearer.

He made the assertion during a gathering of party faithful in Mampong in the Ashanti Region, where he had gone to mourn the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu.

The event, which drew key grassroots members and sympathisers, became a platform for Mr. Agyapong to reflect on the party’s electoral standards and traditions.

According to the former Assin Central MP, the NPP has a consistent record of backing candidates with strong electoral showings, and not those whose performances fall short.

He cited the case of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, whose leadership in the last general election, he described as “abysmal.”

“In our party, performance matters. We don’t just recycle candidates,” he said.

Addressing claims that the NPP has historically given flagbearers multiple chances, Mr. Agyapong pointed to the example of the late Prof. Albert Adu Boahen.

“Prof. Adu Boahen was a pioneer in resisting military dictatorship and played a significant role in the return to multiparty democracy. Yet after the 1992 defeat, he was replaced. That tells you the NPP is serious about performance,” he said.

He contrasted this with the cases of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and President Nana Akufo-Addo, both of whom earned second chances after demonstrating strong electoral potential in previous races.

“Kufuor had only a few months to campaign in 1996, yet his performance was impressive enough to earn him another chance in 2000. That is the NPP’s standard—performance,” he stressed.

Mr. Agyapong’s comments come amid growing discussions within the party regarding its future leadership and strategy going into the next elections.

Survey suggests Opoku-Agyemang, Bawumia could face off in 2028 election https://www.adomonline.com/survey-suggests-opoku-agyemang-bawumia-could-face-off-in-2028-election/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 09:38:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541929 A new survey suggests that Ghanaian voters favour a 2028 presidential contest between Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The survey, jointly conducted by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), a German political foundation, explored voter behaviour in the 2024 elections and succession preferences within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Researchers sampled 16,988 respondents across all 16 regions, with a majority of participants being traders, artisans, and farmers.

Among NDC supporters, Prof Opoku-Agyemang emerged as the leading potential successor to former President John Mahama, with 35.5 per cent of respondents naming her the most suitable candidate. She was followed by Haruna Iddrisu (14.9%), Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (10.2%), Johnson Asiedu Nketia (8.3%), and Julius Debrah (2.2%).

However, 25.6 per cent of NDC respondents indicated they were unsure who should lead the party into the 2028 elections.

For the NPP, the survey pointed to a likely showdown between Dr Bawumia and Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong. Dr Bawumia led with 49.3 per cent support, while Mr Agyapong followed with 24.6 per cent. Other candidates mentioned were Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum (2.6%), Dr Bryan Acheampong (0.8%), and Boakye Agyarko (0.6%). Additionally, 21 per cent of NPP respondents said they did not know who should lead the party.

While the study found voter intent for the 2028 election remains high, it also noted early signs of declining enthusiasm compared to previous elections.

On the motivations behind voter choices in 2024, the report found that 73 per cent were influenced by party manifestos, while 46.2 per cent based their decision on the likeability of presidential aspirants.

Dr Joseph A. Darmoe, Director of Programmes at KAS and a Senior Lecturer at GIMPA, said the data indicates a shift from rigid party loyalty to issue-based voting.

“Voters are moderately moving away from strong party affiliation… Party manifestoes are as critical as your campaign expenditure,” he noted.

Mrs Anna Lena Sabroso Wasserfall, Country Representative of KAS, said the study was designed as a resource for political parties, civil society, researchers, journalists, policymakers, and engaged citizens.

“Our motivation to carry out this study and to make an additional contribution to empirical political discourse in Ghana derives from our self-understanding as a political foundation,” she explained.

‘A third term for Mahama will never happen’ – Titus Glover https://www.adomonline.com/a-third-term-for-mahama-will-never-happen-titus-glover/ Sat, 31 May 2025 06:19:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2540419 Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has dismissed any alleged prospects of President John Mahama seeking a third term in office, describing any such ambition as unconstitutional.

Speaking to JoyNews at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Mr Titus Glover accused President Mahama of orchestrating efforts to undermine the judiciary as a prelude to amending the constitution to extend his tenure.

“We want to assure President Mahama that he has been given the power to govern,” he said.

“But all the orchestration he is doing to get rid of the Chief Justice is a way of trying to amend the constitution. I have said it before, and I will repeat it: President Mahama’s third term will never happen.”

The former minister criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as a campaign of vilification against the Chief Justice, pointing to a flood of public commentary on the charges levelled against her.

“Today, she has filed an affidavit, and all she is asking for is to let the public know what is happening. Is this too much to ask?” he questioned.

Mr Titus Glover labelled the entire situation as a “calculated attempt” by the president, his government, and the party to weaken judicial independence.

He recalled a statement allegedly made by President Mahama during his campaign, vowing to deal with the Chief Justice upon coming to power.

According to him, the current national executives have failed to deliver on their mandate and must be replaced ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“We all need to go home for new, experienced people to come and lead the party. I’m not saying the current executives are not experienced, but we have failed,” he said.

Chairman Butey made these comments in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, citing the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections as a major setback that warrants change.

“From 137 seats to 88 is such a big blow. I didn’t even expect we were going to lose the election, so the outcome was surprising. For over two weeks, I couldn’t put myself together,” he revealed.

He maintained that the party must take bold steps to re-strategize and rebuild its base to regain public confidence and electoral strength.

NPP National Executives must take responsibility for election defeat – Chairman Butey https://www.adomonline.com/npp-national-executives-must-take-responsibility-for-election-defeat-chairman-butey/ Thu, 22 May 2025 11:49:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2537376 The first National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dankwa Smith Butey, has said the national executives cannot absolve themselves from responsibility for their defeat in the 2024 election.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Chairman Butey stated that the executives must take responsibility for the outcome, even though it was unpleasant.

He argued that if the party had won, the executives would have claimed the glory, so they must equally accept responsibility for the defeat.

“I admit we must take responsibility because if there was a win, we would have said we made it happen. So we must accept the defeat and apologise,” he said.

Chairman Butey believes there should have been more effective collaboration between the national, regional, and other executive levels to drive the election campaign successfully.

“The national level should have pushed the regions, then it trickles down to the constituencies and other levels, but our performance was not the best, and all we can do is apologise,” he added.

The NPP was poised to break the eight-year cycle with its presidential candidate and then Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

However, the party suffered significant losses in both the presidential and parliamentary contests.

John Mahama, on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was elected and declared winner by the Electoral Commission (EC) after polling 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55%, while Dr. Bawumia secured 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

In Parliament, there was also a historic shift in power as the NDC obtained 183 seats, leaving the NPP with just 88 seats.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Crabbe recounted the impact of his indefinite suspension on his personal life and business, describing the experience as deeply hurtful.

Ahead of the 2016 general elections, the NPP’s National Executive Committee suspended Mr. Crabbe alongside then-General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong and then-Chairman Paul Afoko for actions deemed harmful to the party’s presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Now seeking to contest the NPP National Chairmanship position in 2026, Mr. Crabbe emphasized that the suspension did not stop him from playing his part in the party’s development.

“I am still a member of the NPP. I really pushed the car during the 2024 elections by drafting strategies for Krowor and Obom-Domeabra constituencies,” he revealed.

He added that he voted in the party’s super delegates congress and insisted that voicing concerns about party matters should not lead to one being branded anti-party.

“It doesn’t matter what I feel or who I support, but sometimes you need to get on board for the work to be done, then we can later discuss issues. Even now, I’m still not happy about many things that were done to me — they destroyed my businesses and more — but that’s behind me,” he stated.

Court restrains Peter Amewu from holding himself as MP of 8th Parliament https://www.adomonline.com/court-restrains-peter-amewu-from-holding-himself-as-mp-of-8th-parliament/ Tue, 20 May 2025 06:28:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536317 The Court of Appeal sitting in Koforidua has granted an interlocutory injunction filed by Professor Margaret Kweku and others from the SALL (Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe) traditional areas, restraining John Peter Amewu from holding himself out as the former Member of Parliament for Hohoe.

The court further restrained the Speaker of Parliament from processing or paying any entitlements to Mr. Amewu as a former MP, pending the hearing and determination of the appeal.

This comes after the Ho High Court, presided over by Justice Owoahene Acheampong, on July 29, 2024, dismissed an election petition against Mr. Amewu’s election, citing lack of jurisdiction. A notice of appeal was subsequently filed on July 31, 2024, challenging the decision.

The application for interlocutory injunction was filed on December 23, 2024, at the Court of Appeal.

During the hearing, lead counsel for the petitioners, Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata, urged the court to restrain the Speaker of Parliament from recognizing Mr. Amewu or processing any payments to him, in the interest of justice.

In response, counsel for Mr. Amewu argued that his client had committed no wrongdoing and suggested that if any fault existed, it lay with the Electoral Commission for allegedly misleading Mr. Amewu, who is the second respondent in the case.

A three-member panel presided over by Justice Bright Mensah held that the application had merit. The other members of the panel were Justice Noble Nkrumah and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba (Mrs.).

NPP bans internal campaigns https://www.adomonline.com/npp-bans-internal-campaigns/ Wed, 14 May 2025 20:53:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2535038 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed all members seeking positions to cease campaign activities ahead of the official announcement of the process for internal elections.

This was contained in a statement issued by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, noting that the directive is in line with the party’s commitment to fairness in the administration of its internal electoral processes.

“The party leadership wishes to bring to the attention of all members and prospective aspirants at various levels that, until official nominations are duly opened, no individual is permitted to engage party executives or party structures in any form of campaigning or soliciting support for internal positions,” the statement read in parts.

It added, “Premature engagements not only undermine the authority of the party’s organs but also risk disrupting the careful and strategic efforts currently underway to reposition the party for victory in the 2028 general elections.”

The party has therefore urged all members, supporters, and stakeholders to fully cooperate with this directive and refrain from any activities that could compromise its unity or the integrity of our processes.

“Let us remain focused and supportive of the internal reforms and efforts being spearheaded by the leadership to build a more formidable and cohesive party,” the statement urged.

Meanwhile, the party has reaffirmed commitment to transparency, inclusiveness, fairness and due process, and it will provide timely updates on all relevant timelines and guidelines when nominations are officially opened.

Our comeback requires having open arms to all – Bawumia to NPP https://www.adomonline.com/our-comeback-requires-having-open-arms-to-all-bawumia-to-npp/ Sat, 10 May 2025 11:59:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533689 Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 flagbearer, has urged his party to embrace all Ghanaians as it prepares for a political resurgence.

Speaking in the Volta Region on Thursday, 8 May, as part of the NPP’s ongoing Thank You Tour, Dr Bawumia emphasised unity and inclusivity as the cornerstones of the party’s revival strategy.

Addressing a gathering of party faithful at Hohoe, he reflected on the lessons of the December 2024 election defeat, noting that rebuilding trust would demand a broad tent approach.

“Our comeback requires having open arms to all,” he declared.

“We must reach out to every Ghanaian, regardless of region, religion or background, and prove that the NPP is a home for national progress, not narrow interests.”

Dr Bawumia went on to highlight specific measures designed to foster this inclusivity.

He proposed the formation of regional liaison committees tasked with engaging local stakeholders and channeling their concerns directly to the party’s policy-making bodies.

“These committees will ensure that every voice is heard and that our policies reflect the aspirations of all communities,” he explained.

He also stressed the importance of grassroots mobilisation, urging party members to intensify door-to-door outreach and to listen attentively to constituents’ needs.

Concluding his address, the flagbearer thanked Volta Region supporters for their resilience and urged them to become ambassadors of the new inclusive vision.

“With unity, humility and open arms, we will transform our setback into a powerful comeback,” he affirmed, as delegates responded with a standing ovation.

Let’s all rise and rebuild for victory 2028 – Bawumia to NPP faithful https://www.adomonline.com/lets-all-rise-and-rebuild-for-victory-2028-bawumia-to-npp-faithful/ Sat, 10 May 2025 11:56:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533684 Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice-President and the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer in the 2024 elections, has called on party faithful to unite in rebuilding efforts ahead of the 2028 polls.

Speaking in the Volta Region on Thursday, May 8, as part of the NPP’s ongoing Thank You Tour, he emphasised that the foundations laid today will determine the party’s fortunes in four years’ time.

Reflecting on the lessons of the last election, Dr Bawumia acknowledged the disappointment of defeat but urged members not to dwell on past setbacks.

“We did not achieve the result we desired, but that is behind us now,” he said. “What matters is how we rise from this and strengthen our party’s structures at every level.”

He outlined concrete steps for revitalisation, including the establishment of robust constituency caucuses and the recruitment of new volunteers.

“We must rebuild our grassroots presence,” Dr Bawumia insisted.

“From regional executives down to polling-station agents, everyone has a role to play in restoring confidence among Ghanaians.”

Addressing supporters in Ho, he highlighted the strategic importance of the Volta Region, traditionally a stronghold of the opposition.

“This region is ripe for transformation,” he remarked. “By engaging sincerely with local concerns and delivering on our promises, we will earn the trust of communities here.”

Looking ahead to 2028, Dr Bawumia issued a rallying cry: “Let us all rise and rebuild together, for victory in 2028 is not a dream but a mission. We have the talent, the ideas and the resolve—now is the time to act.”

His speech concluded with a renewed commitment to a unified and forward-thinking campaign.

‘My early concession was to save Ghana from unnecessary tension’ – Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/my-early-concession-was-to-save-ghana-from-unnecessary-tension-bawumia/ Sat, 10 May 2025 11:52:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533683 Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice-President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 flagbearer, has explained that his prompt concession following last year’s election defeat was motivated by a desire to spare Ghana needless political strife.

He made the remarks while addressing supporters in the Oti Region as part of the party’s ongoing Thank You Tour.

Speaking on Friday, May 9, Dr Bawumia recalled the tense aftermath of the December polls and the legal challenges that followed.

“I chose to concede early. It was a difficult decision, but my foremost concern was to save Ghana from unnecessary tension,” he stated, underscoring the importance of national unity over personal ambition.

The former flagbearer went on to express confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“By accepting the outcome swiftly, we upheld the rule of law and prevented further polarisation,” he observed.

Dr Bawumia also used the occasion to commend party faithful for their unwavering support.

“I deeply appreciate the sacrifices you made during the campaign. Your dedication—from door-to-door canvassing to fundraising—has not gone unnoticed. This tour is my chance to say thank you and to reaffirm our shared commitment to Ghana’s progress,” he said.

2024 election: CPP reacts to Adu-Boahene’s claims GH₵8.3m was spent on ‘opposition party’ https://www.adomonline.com/2024-election-cpp-reacts-to-adu-boahenes-claims-gh%e2%82%b58-3m-was-spent-on-opposition-party/ Sat, 10 May 2025 07:27:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533645 The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has strongly denied claims that it received financial support from the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government ahead of the 2024 elections.

The CPP stated emphatically that the party relied on its meagre resources and not on any support from the ruling party at the time.

The rebuttal comes after former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss Kwabena Adu-Boahene, currently on trial for allegedly misappropriating GH¢49 million, claimed part of the funds were distributed to opposition parties for “covert national security operations”.

In a memo addressed to the National Security Coordinator, the former spy chief claimed the huge sums in question were used for covert national security operations.

This, he said, included some GH₵8.3 million for “communications equipment” for an opposition party and nearly GH₵1 million in payments to legislators for passing key security laws.

Consequently, the former spy chief accused the Attorney General of launching a malicious prosecution against him.

However, CPP General Secretary Kwame Nkrumah Botsio dismissed the allegations in a fiery interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Friday:

“We did not receive any support [from the NPP]. We received support from well-wishers, and if we had received anything close to what is being bandied about, we would have won the election.”

Botsio highlighted the party’s financial constraints during the campaign: “As you can tell, we were so resource-strapped, we did not even have one TV advert, not one radio advert, and just had one billboard.”

He condemned the alleged misuse of state funds: “The allegations that are coming up are preposterous because these are taxpayers’ money. Whether in a rich country or a poor country, you don’t just dole out US$500,000 to an opposition party for whatever reason, especially as it falls outside of what you call security reasons.”

The General Secretary also detailed the party’s grassroots approach to election monitoring:

“We did the collation ourselves on my laptop, and our able regional chairmen did the collation themselves at the regional level and forwarded the results to us. We did not have any collation equipment at all except our laptops.”

The CPP’s denial comes as the high-profile corruption case continues to reveal explosive claims about alleged financial irregularities during the 2024 election period.

Meanwhile, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has challenged Mr Adu-Boahene to disclose the specific opposition parties he gave the cash to procure election collation logistics and equipment because the umbrella party was not a beneficiary.

Speaking to JoyNews, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, dismissed the claims, saying, “On authority, I’m telling you the NDC has nothing to do with what came out of that story.

“Those people they’re referring to supported them during their recent demonstration. He knows his partners—that’s who he was referring to. And I’m sure everybody has seen that. My opponent would give me resources to defeat him in an election? Does that make sense?” he quizzed.

Dr Tanko further asserted that other political parties in opposition had not shown any real interest in unseating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and were often aligned with them.

“When we were in IPAC, anytime the NDC opposed the EC and NPP, those parties sided with the EC and NPP. The NDC has nothing to do with this. We fought hard, used our own resources, and dealt a heavy blow to the NPP.”

When asked whether the NDC might have received funds unknown to him, he dismissed the suggestion.

“I can speak on authority—it’s not possible at all. These guys are just clutching at straws. It won’t help them. They should go and negotiate a plea bargain; otherwise, he [Adu-Boahene] could be looking at 25 years.”

Dr Tanko added that the NDC fully supports the Attorney General’s efforts to prosecute the former NSB boss.

“The party has no business with whatever rubbish is coming out—we are not part of it.”

You lost a battle, not the war – Ya-Na consoles Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/you-lost-a-battle-not-the-war-ya-na-consoles-bawumia/ Fri, 09 May 2025 06:51:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533246 The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, has offered words of encouragement to former Vice President and the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging him not to view his electoral defeat as the end of his presidential ambitions.

Speaking at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Thank You Tour of the Northern Region, the Ya-Na told Dr. Bawumia that losing his first presidential bid does not mark the end of his political journey.

“Your electoral loss is a battle lost but not the war to lead the development of our dear nation,” the Ya-Na said, drawing comparisons with former President John Dramani Mahama’s comeback after defeats in 2016 and 2020 before his victory in the 2024 elections.

“This is only your first attempt, and there are several chances ahead. All that we need is to pray for a longer life and good health. May Allah continue to guide and guard you in all your endeavours,” the Dagbon King added.

The Ya-Na praised Dr. Bawumia’s contributions to national development during his tenure as Vice President, particularly in areas of digital innovation and economic transformation.

“We recognise your contributions to Ghana’s development, particularly in digitalisation and economic modernisation initiatives during your tenure as Vice President,” he said. “With determined efforts, you spearheaded several transformative projects, including Ghana’s digital addressing system and mobile money interoperability. All these have not gone unnoticed, and Ghanaians are grateful for your efforts.”

He advised Dr. Bawumia to maintain his commitment to national service despite the electoral setback.

“So I entreat you to still have the interest of this country at heart and not despair prematurely.”

In response, Dr. Bawumia expressed his deep appreciation to the Ya-Na for his enduring support, guidance, and blessings.

The NPP’s tour aims to express gratitude to supporters and traditional leaders across the country following the party’s performance in the 2024 general elections.

The Commission noted that at least one platform will be set up in every electoral area and unit where elections are being held.

Meanwhile, candidates and their supporters have been cautioned to conduct their campaigns peacefully.

They have been warned against the use of threats, force, or intimidation to influence voters, stressing that such actions are election offences and will not be tolerated.

IGP requests collation roadmap for disputed Ablekuma North election https://www.adomonline.com/igp-requests-collation-roadmap-for-disputed-ablekuma-north-election/ Thu, 08 May 2025 17:19:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533146 The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Yohunu, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to provide a clear roadmap for the collation of results in the disputed 2024 parliamentary elections in the Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra region.

Speaking at a meeting with the National Election Security Task Force, the IGP said the request aims to improve coordination between security agencies and electoral officials, while also preventing confusion or conflict during the crucial collation phase.

“I would urge the EC to provide the National Election Security Task Force with a roadmap with respect to date and place for the finalisation of the collation. History often reflects omissions tested by pivotal moments. This is such a moment. The way we handle the situation in Ablekuma North will resonate across the country,” he said.

He stressed that the collation process must inspire public trust. “Let us secure not just ballot boxes, but also belief in the system. Let us protect not just physical lives, but the spirit of democracy.

Ablekuma North has emerged as a highly competitive constituency, and concerns have previously been raised over delays and disagreements during collation.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission is optimistic that the upcoming process will end the controversies surrounding the collation. Deputy Chairman in charge of operations, Samuel Tettey, spoke for the EC.

“In our latest letter to the IGP and the National Elections Security Taskforce, a meeting was scheduled for today to discuss the roadmap to enable the Commission to conclude the collation for the Ablekuma North constituency. So we are hoping that today will bring to an end the issues,” Mr Tettey said.

Mahama’s alleged third-term agenda a mere political talk – Arthur Kennedy https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-alleged-third-term-agenda-a-mere-political-talk-arthur-kennedy/ Wed, 07 May 2025 07:37:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2532411 Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy, has downplayed claims that President John Mahama intends to seek a third term.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Kennedy dismissed the claim as mere political talk.

Dr. Kennedy’s remarks come in the wake of widespread criticism over President Mahama’s recommendation of seven Court of Appeal justices for nomination to the Supreme Court.

According to the NPP, the nominations—following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo—form part of a veiled attempt to pursue a third-term agenda.

However, Dr. Kennedy has said it is unfortunate for the two issues to be politicised or conflated.

“Petitions were brought against the Chief Justice, and in accordance with Article 146, the President forwarded them to the Council of State, which I believe is a wise move,” he said.

He further emphasized that suspending the Chief Justice was the right move, as she could not have presided over her own case due to a clear conflict of interest.

Dr. Kennedy noted that while judicial independence is essential, it should not come at the expense of accountability.

“So if petitions have been brought against the Chief Justice, she must respond, but that does not mean she is guilty. We must ensure there is due process by allowing the system to work,” he urged.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy General Secretary, Mustapha Gbande, has described the claims as a tactic to divert attention from the constitutionally sanctioned suspension of the Chief Justice, warning that such political games risk damaging institutions far beyond the NDC or Mahama.

Why NPP couldn’t ‘break the 8’ – Theo Acheampong reveals https://www.adomonline.com/why-npp-couldnt-break-the-8-theo-acheampong-reveals/ Mon, 05 May 2025 08:16:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531518 Political risk analyst and economist Dr. Theo Acheampong says the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the 2024 election not because of religious dynamics, but due to economic failure.

“They couldn’t break the 8 because they broke the economy,” he declared on Joy News’ Newsfile Express on Saturday, May 3.

Dr. Acheampong dismissed claims that religious identity played a role in the party’s defeat.

“The evidence on the religious argument is complete hogwash,” he said firmly.

“You can slice and dice the data however you want, but you come to a very firm and simple conclusion: the NPP lost the 2024 election not because of religion, but because of the economy.”

He pointed to a long list of economic missteps, including the domestic debt exchange programme, the unpopular E-Levy, and ballooning inflation.

“At one point on Newsfile back in 2022, I was one of the first to call for the sacking of Ken Ofori-Atta. His position had become untenable.”

According to Dr. Acheampong, the damage was self-inflicted.

“These were the issues that sent the elephant back into the bush. It had nothing to do with the fact that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is Muslim.”

Analysing the election results, he said the data shows that the NPP lost ground consistently across all regions—not just in Christian-dominated areas.

“If they had listened and actually run the economy better, especially after COVID, when the warning signs were there, they would have broken the eight.”

He echoed Dr. Bawumia’s own comments during the campaign, noting that the Vice President admitted part of the loss was due to the cost-of-living crisis and “the arrogance of power.”

Dr. Acheampong pointed out that even the NDC presented 215 Christian candidates—and 74 of them lost.

“So what is the religious argument here?” he asked. “When people are hungry, when inflation hits over 54%, it’s not about whether someone is Christian or Muslim. That doesn’t put food on the table.”

He insisted the NPP’s failure was foreseeable.

“The warning signs were there. They had to make a course correction, or Ghanaians were going to punish them. And they did.”

He also addressed the lingering anger within the party.

“You can sense it even on Dr. Bawumia’s thank-you tour. There’s still pain, there’s still anger at the grassroots and even among the party hierarchy. People are unhappy with how the country was managed.”

The economist said the emergence of new aspirants is telling.

“Just this week, we saw a post from Dr. Yaw Adutwum—which was later deleted—hinting at a possible run. Others may follow.”

He believes the appetite for change within the party is strong, but warned that it must be rooted in substance.

“This change can’t be based on religion. They must address the real issues that sent them to opposition.”

Dr. Acheampong concluded with a blunt message: “They have to own up and apologise to Ghanaians.”

‘New aspirants signal anger, pain within NPP after 2024 election loss’ – Dr. Acheampong https://www.adomonline.com/new-aspirants-signal-anger-pain-within-npp-after-2024-election-loss-dr-acheampong/ Mon, 05 May 2025 06:08:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531446 Political risk analyst and economist Dr. Theo Acheampong says the emergence of new contenders to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a direct sign of deep cracks within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) following its 2024 electoral defeat.

Speaking on Newsfile Express on Saturday, May 3, he pointed to a wave of frustration brewing within the party, suggesting that figures like former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum are testing the waters due to unresolved internal discontent.

“I think this week, we saw a post from Dr. Yaw Adutwum, which was subsequently deleted, more or less intimating that maybe he’s putting his hat in the race,” Dr. Acheampong revealed.
“That tells you something. And there are others too.”

Asked if Dr. Yaw Adutwum looked like a credible challenger, he replied, “I think he has what it takes. I’m sure there are other people, too, who have what it takes. I’m sure Dr. Bawumia would want to go again. It’s not for me to judge. It’s for the people that belong to the party to make that decision.”

But for him, the emergence of alternative voices is not just about ambition—it reflects a lingering bitterness that has yet to be addressed.

“The fact that other people are even intimating or putting in a bid for a run, and the fact that these issues are happening on the [Bawumia] Thank You Tour, shows me that there’s still a lot of anger and there’s still a lot of pain,” he said.
“And they want to change things. But the way you want to change things is not because of religion. You’ve got to fundamentally address the issues that took you to opposition.”

Dr. Acheampong didn’t mince words on what, in his view, caused the party’s downfall.

“The NPP lost the 2024 election not because of religion, but because of the economy. It is as simple as that,” he declared.
“The evidence on the religious argument is just complete hogwash. You can slice and dice the data how you want, but you come to a very firm and simple conclusion.”

He was blunt in dismissing arguments that blamed the Vice President’s Muslim identity for the NPP’s loss.

“It cannot be that it is because they put a candidate who had a different religious tag than those in other parts of the country,” he said.
“When people are hungry, facing cost-of-living pressures and inflation over 54%, it’s not about whether one is Muslim or Christian. That doesn’t put food on the table.”

Citing economic policy failures such as the Domestic Debt Exchange and the unpopular E-Levy, he said the ruling party ignored clear signs of public dissatisfaction.

“I was among the best people to actually call for the sacking of Ken Ofori-Atta, because his position had become untenable,” he said.
“It is those issues that sent the elephant back into the bush again.”

Dr. Acheampong even referenced Dr. Bawumia’s own admissions.

“He said it himself—it was partly to do with the cost-of-living crisis, and partly to do with the arrogance of power. To borrow the same words.”

He urged a closer look at electoral data to debunk the religious narrative, stating that the NPP lost votes across all regions regardless of religious demographics, while the NDC made gains almost everywhere.

“Even in the NDC, they presented 215 Christians, and out of that number, 74 lost,” he pointed out. “So religion didn’t determine the outcome there either.”

For him, the party’s internal troubles stretch beyond statistics.

He said Dr. Bawumia’s ongoing Thank You Tour has laid bare just how fragile the party’s unity remains.

“The candidate did not take the other ones along. And they are trying to convey a message of unity this time around. But what we are seeing on the tour also shows that, look, there is still pain and there is still anger amongst the hierarchy and the grassroots.”

He was clear about what the NPP needs to do next.

“They have to own up and apologise to Ghanaians,” he said. “The warning signs have been there throughout.”

Kwabena Agyepong proposes constitutional reforms to NPP Amendment Committee https://www.adomonline.com/kwabena-agyepong-proposes-constitutional-reforms-to-npp-amendment-committee/ Fri, 02 May 2025 06:12:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530755 Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has proposed three key reforms to the nine-member constitutional amendment committee of the party.

The proposed reforms include the formation of Constituency Caucuses nationwide—comprising all current and past office holders of the party in each constituency—the reordering of Presidential Primaries, and the removal of Article 13(9) from the party’s constitution.

According to Mr. Agyepong, the current structure of the party’s special electoral college, which consists of fewer than 1,000 members, is prone to manipulation and undermines democratic fairness. He is advocating for a broader and more inclusive process.

“This proposal represents a limited enlargement of the electoral college, ensuring broader consultation and representation in key decision-making processes,” he stated.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Agyepong expressed concern over growing apathy and disaffection among some party members, which he said often leads to breakaways.

He also highlighted increasing dissatisfaction with the party’s internal electoral processes, which many perceive as being “monetised” and “manipulated.”

Mr. Agyepong emphasized that his proposals are aimed at easing internal tensions and establishing a more coherent timeline for party activities.

“There is a rising demand for a more inclusive system,” he noted, “with some members calling for a voting base that includes all card-bearing party members.”

MEMORANDUM

TO: NPP Constitution Amendment Committee
ATTENTION: Chairman, Frank Davies, Esq.
FROM: Kwabena Agyei Agyepong
DATE: 17th April, 2025
SUBJECT: Proposals for Constitutional Amendments

Following my submissions during the second quarter meeting of the NPP National Executive Committee held at Alisa Hotel on 16th April, 2025, I hereby officially present the proposals below for the committee’s consideration:

  1. Formation of Constituency Caucuses

It is proposed that the party establishes, in each of the 276 constituencies, a caucus comprising all current and past office holders of the party in the constituency. Specifically, this caucus shall include:

  • Members of Parliament
  • DCEs/MCEs
  • Constituency Executives
  • Electoral Area Coordinators
  • Polling Station Executives
  • Patrons
  • Elders

This proposal represents a limited enlargement of the electoral college, ensuring broader consultation and representation in key decision-making processes.

  1. Order of Presidential Primaries

To reduce tension associated with the numerous elections the party conducts ahead of the presidential candidate election, it is proposed that the presidential primaries be held firstfollowing the amendment of the electoral college.

This approach aligns with Article 13(1) of the party’s current constitution and promotes a more logical and less contentious electoral timeline.

  1. Expulsion of Article 13(9)

It is further proposed that Article 13(9) of the constitution, which mandates the formation of a special electoral college to trim presidential aspirants to five (5), be expunged.

The current structure of this special college—comprising fewer than one thousand (1000) members—is susceptible to manipulation and undermines democratic fairness. A broader, more inclusive process is recommended.

Respectfully submitted for your kind consideration.

Kwabena Agyepong, has urged the party to prioritise the election of its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 election.

The former NPP Presidential hopeful has said it will be his desire for the NPP to elect its candidate by December 2025, as an opposition party.

In an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, Mr. Agyepong emphasised that such a move will diffuse internal tensions and help members focus on rebuilding.

“If we are able to enlarge the base, thus the expanded electoral college, then we should elect the presidential candidate because he is the most important figure in the party. We cannot wait till 2026 without doing anything.

“The early election will ease a lot of tension and curb division. So by 2026, when we are holding the constituency and national elections, the base will know we have the presidential candidate” he said.

He emphasised that it is his desire for the party to conduct the flagbearer election by December 2025.

2024 election: There is no need to name and shame; this is time for sober reflection – NPP told  https://www.adomonline.com/2024-election-there-is-no-need-to-name-and-shame-this-is-time-for-sober-reflection-npp-told/ Thu, 01 May 2025 17:26:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530760 Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Kwabena Agyepong, has cautioned the party against blame game over its defeat in the 2024 election.

According to him, the NPP must focus on learning from its defeat and mistakes for a strong comeback in the 2028 election.

In an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, the former General Secretary emphasised that the electoral loss should be a moment of sober reflection for the NPP.

“When you go into an election, there is an overwhelming goodwill for the new government, and it is normal. So you plan your communication and everything for the people to know that you are learning.

“That is why we put together this Prof. Oquaye committee. This is not the time for us to vent because it has never healed anything,” he said.

He stated that it was unnecessary to identify and blame anybody for the defeat.

“This is not the time to name and shame but for sober reflection. The document is not meant for public consumption so we can just put together a team to deliberate on the report and take the necessary steps because that is what matters,” he added.

“Stop feeling sorry for yourselves” – Akufo-Addo urges NPP after election defeat https://www.adomonline.com/stop-feeling-sorry-for-yourselves-akufo-addo-urges-npp-after-election-defeat/ Thu, 01 May 2025 14:29:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530731 Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has rallied members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to regroup and prepare for a strong comeback ahead of the 2028 general election.

Speaking during a courtesy call by a delegation of constituency organisers from the Greater Accra Region, led by a prominent party figure and Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the NPP, Prince Obeng, the former president acknowledged the party’s recent electoral defeat but called for renewed unity and purpose.

“Political parties win or lose elections. Yes, we have lost an election. But I know we can come back,” Akufo-Addo said during a meeting with NPP constituency organisers from the Greater Accra Region.

“We should stop feeling sorry for ourselves. Let’s pick ourselves up, reorganise, and go forward as one”, the former president was quoted by Obeng as saying.

“We should behave like we believe we can win back the trust of the people for 2028″, Akufo-Addo added.

The visit formed part of internal consultations ahead of proposed constitutional amendments in the party, with the delegation pushing for a clearer definition of the role of constituency organisers in the NPP’s constitution. The group appealed to the former president to champion the cause.

During the meeting, the organisers also expressed concerns about what they described as attempts by the current government to interfere with the judiciary—alleging a plot to suspend or remove the Chief Justice, a move they fear could erode constitutional safeguards, including presidential term limits.

While Akufo-Addo did not publicly address the claims, his broader message focused on party cohesion and the path toward political recovery.

His remarks were described as “profound and inspiring” by members of the delegation.

The visit comes at a time of reflection for the NPP, as the party strategises its future following a defeat in the last general elections.

All 276 MPs are thieves, if campaign donations mean corruption – Attorney General to A Plus https://www.adomonline.com/all-276-mps-are-thieves-if-campaign-donations-mean-corruption-attorney-general-to-a-plus/ Thu, 01 May 2025 14:11:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530708

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has strongly responded to accusations made against him by Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, 30th April, Dr Ayine dismissed the claims, which he said were based on campaign donations he received ahead of the last elections.

“I am reliably informed that his basis of saying that I am corrupt and a thief is that I took campaign contributions from a businessman at East Legon known as Dr Sledge, and that he also knows the people who donated pickups for my campaign,” Dr Ayine said.

In response, he argued that accepting donations for political campaigns does not amount to corruption.

“Now if receiving donations for your campaign or getting a pickup for a campaign is thievery or corruption, then there are 276 thieves in Parliament including the person who was making the allegation himself,” he stated.

Dr Ayine further warned A Plus to be cautious with his public accusations. He said he was ready to face him directly.

“But let him be warned that in my hometown we do not fear mud being thrown at us. On the contrary, we walk into the mud to deal with the person doing the mud-slinging.

“And I am prepared to walk into the mud with A Plus because what I have about him and the National Service scandal, he should come and tell you. I am challenging him,” he added.

I’m proud NPP lost 2024 election; I’ll quit politics if… – Hopeson Adorye [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/im-proud-npp-lost-2024-election-ill-quit-politics-if-hopeson-adorye-listen/ Thu, 01 May 2025 12:02:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530697 Former leading member of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Hopeson Adorye, has said he stands a proud man over the party’s defeat in the 2024 election.

Now a leading member of the Movement for Change, Mr. Adorye has vowed to quit politics if the NPP obtains more than 28% in the 2028 election.

The tough spoken politician made the bold declaration on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, stating he will never return to the NPP.

According to him, he will continue to take the NPP’s attention while making the election victory a cool chop for the National Democratic Congress(NDC).

“Who said I will return to the NPP? I will continue to take their attention while the NDC wins. I’m proud they lost the elections and I have vowed that if they secure more than 28% in the 2028 election, I will quit politics,” he declared.

The Electoral Commission (EC) declared John Mahama the winner of the 2024 presidential election.

He secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid ballots cast. His main contender, Dr. Bawumia, garnered 4,657,304 votes, amounting to 41.61%.

‘This is a campaign relaunch, not a Thank You Tour’ – Dr. Arthur Kennedy on Bawumia’s moves https://www.adomonline.com/this-is-a-campaign-relaunch-not-a-thank-you-tour-dr-arthur-kennedy-on-bawumias-moves/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 06:34:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529745 Physician, author, and politician Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy says former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Thank You Tour is really a relaunch of his flagbearer campaign, as the opposition party struggles to reconnect with the Ghanaian public.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, April 28, he dismissed the tour’s official purpose and questioned its timing and sincerity.

“I actually think that we need an Apology Tour rather than a Thank You Tour,” he said.

“We should be apologising to the country for our bad governance.”

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had lost credibility in the eyes of the public and needed to do more than offer gratitude.

“We should also have an accountability process in which we hold to account the leaders of our previous government and agencies whose misgovernance, arrogance, and corruption caused our defeat,” he stressed.

“That will give us more credibility with the public.”

According to Dr. Kennedy, the internal issues within the party have not been resolved, despite public appearances suggesting otherwise.

He described the presidential primaries that produced Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer as divisive and even violent.

“The primary that led to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s selection was characterised by a little bit of rancour,” he said. “Someone lost an eye. There was violence, actually.”

He added that the unrest had not ended.

“I am told that even on this Thank You Tour, some slaps have been exchanged,” he revealed.

“Which shows that there is a need for more behind-the-scenes reconciliation and other things before we take it public.”

Dr. Kennedy did not mince words about what he believes is the real purpose of the tour.

“It is clear that Dr. Bawumia is trying to make his case ahead of his competitors,” he said. “Everybody knows that.”

For him, the party’s actions suggest it is still focused on image and political advantage rather than accountability and healing.

“We are jumping steps,” he said.

“We need to come clean before we move forward.”

2024 Election: NDC used attacks from our own members against us – Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/2024-election-ndc-used-attacks-from-our-own-members-against-us-bawumia/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 18:52:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529129 Former Vice President and NPP Presidential Candidate for the 2024 Elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has recalled, with disappointment, how the NDC played back internal attacks by some members during the election campaign.

Speaking to party stakeholders at the beginning of his national Thank You Tour in Takoradi on Saturday, Dr. Bawumia said internal bickering, leading to certain explosive comments by key members against the party and government, contributed to the party’s defeat.

“Unity is key in every group endeavour but for the 2024 Elections we faced the issue internal issues.”

“Some of our own members attacked the party and government publicly and our opponents, the NDC, played back these words by our own members against us through series of adverts in the media.”

“They used the words against us and if the attack is coming from your own members, you can imagine the effect.”

Dr. Bawumia called for a United front within the party, saying such bickering, which affected the party in 2024, will continue to derail the cause of the party of not curbed.

Bawumia expresses willingness to help unite NPP ahead of 2028 election https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-expresses-willingness-to-help-unite-npp-ahead-of-2028-election/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 16:01:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529085 The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his willingness to assist in uniting and strengthening its base ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia gave the assurance as part of his Thank You tour in the Western region accompanied by the NPP national executives and former presidential aspirants.

The tour is to express appreciation to party faithful who worked tirelessly in the 2024 election campaign.

The tour also forms part of the party’s agenda to unite and strengthen its base from the grassroots level to the top, as they seek to bring together dissatisfied members who abstained from the last elections, leading to their defeat.

Speaking in Takoradi, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that all past presidential candidates of the NPP have embarked on similar tours, following their defeats.

However, he adopted the new style, involving the party executives and past aspirants as part of his efforts to assist in uniting the party.

Dr. Bawumia also emphasised the need to express appreciation, even though the party lost massively in the last elections.

“God has said in all things we should give thanks and also His ways are not our ways. After the election defeat, many have questioned why we are embarking on a thank you tour but it is just to show appreciation to everyone for the selfless service,” he said.

2024 Election: We’ve learnt our lessons – NPP General Secretary https://www.adomonline.com/2024-election-weve-learnt-our-lessons-npp-general-secretary/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 09:27:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528187 General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has said the party has learnt lessons from its defeat in the 2024 election.

Addressing supporters at the NPP headquarters on Wednesday, Mr. Kodua apologised to Ghanaians for the party’s shortcomings while in power and acknowledged the disappointment many felt.

“To our supporters, to Ghanaians who were disappointed with us as a party and as a government because of certain inactions and actions of our leadership, we have heard you. As a party, we have reflected on everything that happened during our tenure in office.

“We know we did our best in terms of infrastructure and policies, but we didn’t get everything right. So, to everyone who hears us and watches us, on behalf of the National Party, we want to say we are sorry for the disappointment,” he said.

“But we can assure you that we have learnt our lessons. The restructuring that is going to happen in our party will ensure that the New Patriotic Party comes back on the right path. And in 2028, when, by God’s grace, you give us the mandate, all the wrongs that were made will be corrected for us to have a better government under the leadership of the flagbearer we selected,” he assured.

The Thank You Tour, led by the 2024 presidential candidate and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, forms part of efforts to reconnect with the party’s grassroots and express gratitude to supporters nationwide.
