Speaking to Joy News, Evans Nimako, the director of elections for the party, expressed confidence in the party’s candidate, Baba Ali Yussif, popularly known as Homeboy.

“On election day, March 3, they will come out and vote massively for Yusi Baba Ali, known as the home boy. That is the work we are doing as a party,” Nimako said. “We are not going to dish out money as they did.”

The Ayawaso East by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting MP.

The NPP has fielded Baba Ali Yussif, relying on his local roots and acceptance among constituents, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) chose Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed as its candidate following a primary on February 7, 2026.

The NDC primary has faced scrutiny amid allegations of vote buying, with claims that delegates were offered cash and other items.

A party committee was set up to investigate the matter, and Baba Jamal has denied any wrongdoing while pledging full cooperation.

He emphasised the importance of a credible and transparent process both on the election day and in the period leading up to it.

“What is important is on the election day and events leading to the election day, how credible they will be,” he added.

NDC promised to govern differently, that must start from within – Inusah Fuseini https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-promised-to-govern-differently-that-must-start-from-within-inusah-fuseini/ Thu, 12 Feb 2026 07:31:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630363 Lawyer and former National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, says the party’s promise to Ghanaians to “do things differently” must begin with how it handles its own internal affairs.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, a member of the NDC’s Ayawaso East Investigative Committee warned that failure to properly deal with issues such as vote buying and inducement in party primaries could erode public confidence.

“The electorate gave NDC the power to govern this country on the promise that we will do things differently,” he said.

“That difference should extend to our internal operations, internal matters in the party.”

He argued that if the party downplays issues surrounding the Ayawaso East primary, it could erode public trust.

“So if the party… release matters of this nature… it will sap the confidence that people who give us the mandate… on the promise of doing things differently.”

His comments follow the setting up of the investigative committee to examine claims that aspirants offered inducements, including television sets and cash, to delegates during the primary held on Saturday, February 7.

Mr Fusseini said the committee’s findings were clear. “We came to the conclusion, an unalloyed and firm conclusion, that there was widespread illegal activity. I mean, the voter buying and inducement.”

He stressed that the misconduct was not attributable to a single individual. “Vote buying and inducement in the Ayawaso… and it was not limited to one candidate.”

He disclosed that the committee recommended the party could annul the results of the election. When host Evans Mensah asked if that recommendation was included, he responded: “Yeah.”

However, he said the committee also warned the party about the serious legal and practical barriers involved.

He explained that the elections were conducted under the supervision of the Electoral Commission and the results had already been certified.

“The elections were conducted and supervised by the Electoral Commission. The results were certified by the Electoral Commission as being credible.”

He raised what he called the key legal question: “Can a Political Party overturn the verdict of the Electoral Commission when they did not conduct the election?”

He acknowledged the public pressure for annulment but insisted the party must act responsibly. “People have a feeling… but the question is whether it will have a legal basis to stand up.”

Inusah Fuseini described what happened in Ayawaso East as “acts of impunity,” saying they violated several laws and internal party standards. He cited breaches of “the political party act, representation of people’s act CI 127… the criminal code… our Constitution… our code of ethics… our values.”

He warned against responding in a way that could lead to further wrongdoing. “Do you deal with impunity by acting with impunity? Do you deal with a wrong by acting wrongly?”

He also noted timing challenges, pointing out that the committee submitted its report “yesterday at 4 pm” and that “today… is the final day to present a candidate.”

Despite these hurdles, he said the committee still advised the party that annulment was possible, but only with careful consideration of the legal and procedural implications.

NDC has failed woefully; Baba Jamal should have been fined – Vitus Azeem https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-has-failed-woefully-baba-jamal-should-have-been-fined-vitus-azeem/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 15:07:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630179 Anti-corruption campaigner Vitus Azeem has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for clearing Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election despite allegations of vote-buying established during the parliamentary primary.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on Wednesday, Mr Azeem said the NDC missed an opportunity to demonstrate seriousness in dealing with electoral malpractice.

Mr Azeem argued that at the very least, the party should have imposed a penalty to deter future incidents.

“They have woefully failed to make a point. At worst, they would have fined him an amount of money, but just clearing him to go ahead with the by-election doesn’t make sense,” he stated.

His comment comes after the NDC recently announced it would proceed with Baba Jamal as its candidate for the Ayawaso East By-election, even though a three-member investigative committee established allegations of vote-buying during the primaries.

The anti-corruption advocate warned that such decisions only reinforce the culture of vote-buying in Ghana’s politics and weaken public confidence in internal party democracy.

He called on political parties to take stronger and more consistent measures to address inducement and misconduct during elections.

Ayawaso East: Why feed people for votes? Are they your children? – Kofi Kapito https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-why-feed-people-for-votes-are-they-your-children-kofi-kapito/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 14:23:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630170 The Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Kofi Kapito, has criticised the practice of providing food and other incentives to voters during political primaries, describing it as unethical and counterproductive.

Speaking on Joy News AM about voter inducement during party primaries, he said, “It’s not just an NDC thing. It’s a Ghana thing.”

“That I think we should take a look at. And using technicalities, it is allowed. But when the masses don’t buy the technicalities, it becomes a problem.”

He added that the lack of ethics in Ghana begins after formal education.

“Ghana, we don’t have ethics. In other jurisdictions, they even have ethical societies. I’m sure at the university, they teach ethics. The question is, what happens to us when we leave the university? We don’t even have ethics in this country. This has been going on for the longest time. Maybe for the first time, we could have used this as a yardstick to say that enough is enough.”

Kofi Kapito argued that such practices are part of a broader cultural issue that hinders progress in African societies.

“That is what we do as Africans and Black people. That’s why we are not progressing. In other jurisdictions, yes, something will happen, but they make sure that it doesn’t happen again. We will give excuses. This person also did it. So what? Does it make it right?”

He also reflected on how voter inducement has contributed to delays in representation in constituencies, drawing on his own experience as a first-time voter.

“I voted for the first time as a Ghanaian in 1992. This thing was not there. Actually, in 1992, the NPP, as a party, as is done in some places, were actually even paying for people to come and represent the party. So what happened?”

He condemned the expectation that candidates should “buy” votes with handouts or promises.

“He comes and tells you that, when Honorable came, he didn’t do anything for you. He didn’t do the road. If you vote for me, I’ll do that. I’ll do this. I’ll do that. So you take this and make sure that you vote for me. This denial is using words like “TNT,” “welfare,” and “I fed them.” “Please, why should you feed people to vote for you? Are they your children?”

Her comments come amid controversy surrounding the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ayawaso East parliamentary primaries, where Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed has been accused of distributing items, including 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs, to delegates on voting day.

Meanwhile, the NDC has confirmed Baba Jamal as its candidate for the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election after deciding that annulment of the internal parliamentary primary was not an option.

The General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, who was part of the Functional Executive Committee that received the three-member committee’s report mentioned that time constraints, potential legal challenges may arise if they decided to annul the results.

He also cited the lack of clear provisions in the party’s constitution to guide such situations as reasons for maintaining Baba Jamal as the validly elected parliamentary candidate.

Our politics is corrupt; rule by the rich is not democracy https://www.adomonline.com/our-politics-is-corrupt-rule-by-the-rich-is-not-democracy/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 12:59:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630109 Our politics, particularly in this 4th Republic is corrupt and getting worse.

Last weekend, in response to the Ayawaso-East National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary, President John Mahama, the Majority caucus and the party leadership all condemned the vote-buying and promised investigations.

Though, the winner, Baba Jamal has been cleared by the NDC’s three-member committee the probed the allegations, this episode shows some awareness that we have a problem.

The Office of Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) involvement is a cruel joke on all of us.

Just before the Ayawaso-East debacle, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) completed a Presidential primary in which the top three candidates spent more than a combined 400 million Ghana Cedis! Virtually every delegate spent a weekend at a resort.

There are many who have put up mansions just from being delegates over the years. Party executives attending leadership meetings are given envelopes at the door and told what the President wants.

MPs are given inducements to do their jobs. MMDCEs and District Assembly members openly discuss paying for both Presidential nominations and confirmation votes. And these are done by officials sworn to protect our republic and execute our laws.

And while at it, we sentence goat and cassava thieves to draconian sentences! And we fill our churches and mosques week-in, week-out.

These corrupt practices described here permeate every aspect of our public life, affecting education and contracts and Judicial decisions as the plutocrats look for many to buy votes and power. As a nation we need to deal with. We have come to our Prah River, like the Ashantis under Osei Tutu Adikan.

A democracy that cannot police itself will be policed by others. There are developments that we must support.

The lawsuits by Dr. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng and Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe is one initiative. They are seeking consequential, very non -controversial declarations about how our parties manage their primaries.

These processes are corrupt, undemocratic and exclusionary. Our parties operate private clubs controlled by secret cabals. Courts are very important, if they choose to be in such cases. In 2014, the Brazilian Judiciary unearthed the Petrobras scandal that unearthed 2.1 billion USD in bribes and 17 billion USD in lost revenue.

Our judges are citizens too. They care about Ghana- or they should. Let them be patriots and help fix Ghana and Judiciary’s repute.

The other approach is through constitutional reform that would entitle all party members to vote in Parliamentary and Presidential primaries and outlaw the exchange of money for votes.

This should be managed by the nation through voters’ registration not under control of the parties. Let’s save our democracy. Rule by the rich– plutocracy is not democracy. We must stop requiring good men to soil their hands before they can succeed in politics.

Long live Ghana.

EC to hold IPAC meeting today https://www.adomonline.com/ec-to-hold-ipac-meeting-today-2/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 11:04:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630053 The Electoral Commission (EC) will today, February 11, convene the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) as part of preparations for the Ayawaso East by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026. The session will take place at the EC’s corporate headquarters in Accra.

The EC stated that the meeting will focus exclusively on arrangements and procedures for conducting the by-election, instructing political parties to send no more than two representatives each.

The by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, on January 4, 2026, following a brief illness.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially acclaimed Baba Ali as its parliamentary candidate, following consultations and a review of candidates who could effectively mobilize support within the limited campaign period.

In the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, Ghana’s High Commissioner, Baba Jamal, emerged as the party’s candidate.

The election faced calls for annulment amid allegations of vote buying and inducement, which were investigated by a three-member committee. The committee has since submitted its report, clearing Baba Jamal to represent the NDC in the by-election.

Why committee didn’t cancel NDC Ayawaso East primary – Fifi Kwetey explains https://www.adomonline.com/why-committee-didnt-cancel-ndc-ayawaso-east-primary-fifi-kwetey-explains/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 10:41:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630028 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has explained why it will not annul the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary, confirming Mohammed Baba Jamal as its candidate for the upcoming by-election.

The decision comes amid allegations of vote-buying during the party’s parliamentary primary on Saturday, February 7, which Baba Jamal has consistently denied. A three-member committee tasked with investigating the claims submitted a report that informed the party’s decision.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, February 10, the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, cited several factors that prevented the annulment of the primary.

He highlighted time constraints, noting that the Electoral Commission is expected to close nominations for the by-election on Wednesday, February 11, leaving limited opportunity to restart the process.

He also referenced legal and constitutional considerations, explaining that the party’s constitution does not provide for annulment of parliamentary primaries under such circumstances.

“The committee’s report is that ideally, we should have annulled the primary. However, the committee acknowledges real obstacles that make it difficult for us to do that. The party’s constitution doesn’t have a provision for annulment of the election. We are time-bound because we need to present a candidate to the EC on February 11, and there are legal challenges that could be mounted by whoever won. In light of that, the party has taken the recommendations, and we have no option but to present Baba Jamal as our candidate,” he said.

Mr. Kwetey also outlined plans to expand the investigative committee as part of broader internal reforms aimed at strengthening party processes.

“We’re going to do a comprehensive review of the whole process that led to our internal elections. We’re expanding the committee by adding four more members, to make it a seven-member committee, so that they can come out with recommendations to address these inappropriate practices in future elections,” he added.

According to the General Secretary, the committee found inappropriate conduct by all candidates, highlighting the need for reforms to prevent similar issues in future internal elections.

The NDC has reaffirmed Mohammed Baba Jamal as its parliamentary candidate as it prepares to contest the Ayawaso East by-election.

OSP grants Baba Jamal bail after interrogation https://www.adomonline.com/osp-grants-baba-jamal-bail-after-interrogation/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 09:41:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629994 The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has released the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, on self-recognisance bail following several hours of questioning.

His lawyer, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, confirmed to Graphic Online that Mr. Jamal was interrogated over alleged vote-buying linked to the party’s parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7.

He also explained that Mr. Jamal was questioned regarding an alleged assault on an OSP officer dispatched to serve him an invitation letter.

Counsel maintained that his client had no knowledge of items purportedly being distributed in his name, adding: “If he was aware and being a lawyer, he would have informed people of the position of the law.”

Annul Ayawaso East primary, ban offenders for life – Tony Aidoo to NDC https://www.adomonline.com/annul-ayawaso-east-primary-ban-offenders-for-life-tony-aidoo-to-ndc/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 10:23:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629646 Dr Tony Aidoo, former Ghanaian Ambassador to the Netherlands, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cancel the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, over widespread allegations of vote-buying and inducement.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dr Aidoo said the controversy sparked by reports of television sets, boiled eggs and other items being distributed to delegates reflects a deeper erosion of internal party democracy that must be addressed decisively.

“I support a cancellation of the elections. And those involved barred from contesting the elections again. Not only one election. Barred from holding public office,” he said. “And about those who took the money, if you can catch them, chuck them out of the party.”

His comments come as the NDC faces intense scrutiny over the conduct of the primary that produced Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election — a contest triggered after the death of the late MP Mahama Naser Toure.

Allegations of vote-buying have dominated the national conversation, with civil society groups, Election Watch Ghana and Transparency International Ghana condemning the reported distribution of 32-inch televisions and other items to delegates as a threat to democratic integrity.

The controversy has also drawn calls from the NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament for the annulment of the primary results and for sanctions against any aspirants found culpable.

Dr Aidoo criticised the notion of simply “nipping” vote-buying in the bud, arguing the practice has “taken root” and must be uprooted completely — a metaphor he said highlights how entrenched inducement has become in political contests. “The thing has already taken root. It’s how it has flowered,” he said.

Baba Jamal has denied the allegations, telling the media he only heard about the distribution of televisions after the election and insisting his victory was genuine. He has cooperated with an NDC-appointed three-member committee tasked with probing the claims and is expected to appear before it as part of the investigation.

The NDC committee, led by veteran politician Kofi Totobi Quakyi, is expected to submit its report on February 10, 2026, to guide the party’s next steps.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has also announced investigations into the alleged vote-buying, alongside similar claims from other party primaries, stressing the probes are grounded in law and evidence.

Politicians will soon distribute Range Rovers – Dr Asah-Asante on vote-buying https://www.adomonline.com/politicians-will-soon-distribute-range-rovers-dr-asah-asante-on-vote-buying/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 09:21:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629578 Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Department of Political Science, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has cautioned that Ghana’s growing culture of vote-buying could soon reach alarming levels, with politicians potentially distributing luxury vehicles such as Range Rovers to influence voters.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Dr Asah-Asante said inducement in elections has become increasingly normalised, largely because society has failed to consistently condemn or punish the practice.

“We have seen time and again where political actors induce people. Go and give goodies to voters just to sway their votes to one direction or another and we allow it to go. We as a society have acquiesced to that and allowed this thing to go on.

“Now look at how they’re taking the conversation to the level that they’re taking it to with the distribution of television and whatnot. A time will come, I’m sure they’re going to distribute even Range Rovers,” he cautioned.

Dr Asah-Asante also questioned whether political parties genuinely have the resolve to deal with vote-buying, even when committees are set up to investigate such allegations.

He pointed out that while parties often promise to act on recommendations, enforcement remains uncertain.

However, he expressed skepticism about whether any party can truly crack down on inducement when the practice has become widespread.

“Are you sure the party will have the political will to crack the whip if any recommendation is given in that direction?” he asked.

While welcoming ongoing investigations into alleged vote-buying, Dr Asah-Asante maintained that meaningful accountability will be the real test.

“We look forward to seeing something like that. But for me, I still have my doubts.”

NPP to hold national Thanksgiving Service after presidential primary https://www.adomonline.com/npp-to-hold-national-thanksgiving-service-after-presidential-primary/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 08:38:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629542 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to hold a National Thanksgiving Service following the successful conduct of its presidential primary on January 31.

The internal election saw former Vice President and the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, win with 56.48 per cent of the votes. Party officials described the process as peaceful, credible, and transparent.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 9, the NPP said the thanksgiving activities aim to express gratitude to God for the smooth and orderly conduct of the exercise.

“Following the successful conduct of the New Patriotic Party’s Presidential Primary held on January 31, 2026, the Party will hold a National Thanksgiving Service to express its profound gratitude to the Almighty God for a peaceful and historic exercise,” part of the statement said.

The activities will begin with an Islamic Thanksgiving Prayer Service on Friday, February 13, at the National Mosque in Kanda, followed by an Interdenominational Christian Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, February 22, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Auditorium.

“The National Thanksgiving Service will be graced by the Party’s Presidential Candidate and will bring together Christian and Muslim clergy, party leaders, current and former Members of Parliament, former Ministers, former CEOs/MDs, MDEs, and other former government appointees,” the statement added.

The NPP noted that the services will also serve as a moment for unity and reflection as the party prepares for the next phase of its political activities.

Vote-buying is killing our democracy – Ras Mubarak https://www.adomonline.com/vote-buying-is-killing-our-democracy-ras-mubarak/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 08:25:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629534 Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, says the practice of vote-buying in electioneering is posing a significant threat to Ghana’s democratic system.

He believes this practice discourages capable individuals from participating in politics, as they may be deterred by the financial demands of securing a position.

In an interview with Barima Kofi Dawson on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem Mr. Mubarak emphasized that vote-buying also makes it challenging for qualified persons to serve the country, as the process often favors those with the most resources rather than the most merit.

His remarks resonate with concerns raised about alleged vote-buying in the just concluded NDC primary for the Ayawaso East by-election.

He expressed concern that the electoral system is still being controlled by those with deep pockets, and no concrete steps have been taken to address it.

“Whenever we hold an election, vote-buying occurs and we just condemn it without taking action against it. It’s killing our democracy and making it difficult for good people to get into either party positions or parliamentary positions.”

Ras Mubarak pointed out that ‘moneycracy’ in elections fuels corruption, as it allows individuals with financial influence to manipulate the system, undermining fair representation and accountability.

He said this can lead to elected officials prioritizing personal gain over public service.

“Vote-buying leads to corruption; if it costs ¢5-7 million to get elected as an MP, the salary won’t cover the investment, so other means are sought to recoup costs and turn a profit.

“That’s why many MPs are often absent from parliamentary sessions; they’re focused on securing funds for their next elections rather than doing their job,” he stated.

He warned that if a solution is not found to this menace, the country risks having criminals running its affairs.

He therefore condemned the Ayawaso East primary election irregularities, stating that if those involved in the alleged vote-buying are found guilty after investigation, they should be banned from contesting any elections in the country for two years.

Mr. Mubarak urged National Democratic Congress (NDC) to revert to the old Electoral College system which was introduced in 2015.

He said expanding the Electoral College will help eliminate the delegate system, which enables vote-buying during primaries.

He noted that some MPs, including Sam George, Dafeamekpor, and himself, could not have become MPs if the NDC had not expanded the Electoral College delegate system, as they could not have afforded to buy delegates’ votes.

EC calls for IPAC meeting ahead of Ayawaso East by-election https://www.adomonline.com/ec-calls-for-ipac-meeting-ahead-of-ayawaso-east-by-election/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 08:07:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629012 The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled a meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) as part of preparations for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election on March 3, 2026.

In a notice dated February 6, 2026, addressed to the General Secretaries of all registered political parties, the Commission announced that the engagement will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at its corporate headquarters in Accra.

According to the EC, the meeting will focus solely on arrangements and procedures for conducting the Ayawaso East by-election. Political parties have been directed to send no more than two representatives each to the session.

The invitation was signed by Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Services, on behalf of the Chairperson of the Commission.

The Ayawaso East by-election was necessitated by the death of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, on January 4, 2026, following a short illness.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially named Baba Ali as its parliamentary candidate on January 27, following broad consultations and a review of who could effectively mobilize support within a limited campaign period.

In a parliamentary primary on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) elected Ghana’s High Commissioner, Baba Jamal, as its candidate. However, there have been calls for the election to be annulled amidst an ongoing probe into alleged vote buying and inducement that contributed to his victory.

Ayawaso East: OSP has no mandate to probe alleged vote buying – Haruna Mohammed https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-osp-has-no-mandate-to-probe-alleged-vote-buying-haruna-mohammed/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 06:48:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628972 The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has questioned the decision by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate alleged vote buying in the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, Haruna Mohammed argued that the OSP, as a state-funded body established to address corruption in public institutions and state-related activities, has no authority to investigate private individuals or internal party elections.

“See the Special Prosecutor also issuing a statement, a populist statement, a man who has not been able to prosecute even a single case, he is there doing populist imperial tactics. The OSP is talking too much,” he said.

He further criticised the OSP’s statement announcing the probe, describing it as weak and legally flawed.

“That was a very weak letter, and he should have known that some of these things that he has carried in the letter would not even give the grounds on which he wants to investigate. Something happened in Ayawaso East, and you went to put in the NPP. That is unnecessary. The very foundations of the OSP have failed,” he added.

The OSP had earlier announced plans to investigate candidates involved in the primary following allegations of vote buying, a move Haruna Mohammed described as exceeding the office’s legal mandate.

“None of the NPP members who contested for that (Ayawaso East) is holding any public office. I am telling you that the people are private individuals; none of them works for the state. The OSP was not set up to go and investigate private citizens; it is a state-sponsored organisation, and it is important for him to investigate what happens to the state,” he argued.

How can you monitor it? It’s difficult – Ashie Moore on war against vote buying https://www.adomonline.com/how-can-you-monitor-it-its-difficult-ashie-moore-on-war-against-vote-buying/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 06:47:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628970 The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has admitted that the party is facing serious challenges in controlling the influence of money during its internal elections.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Channel One TV on the sidelines of the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, Mr Ashie Moore said monitoring or preventing vote-buying has become “extremely difficult” for party leadership.

According to him, even with security presence and transparency measures, modern financial systems have outpaced traditional monitoring methods.

The former Adentan MP explained that with more than 1,000 delegates voting in Ayawaso East alone, illicit transactions can easily go undetected.

“For vote-buying, how can you monitor it? How can you control it? There are over 1,000 delegates here. As a Regional Chairman, National Chairman or General Secretary, what can you do? Do you know what the aspirant is doing in his bedroom?” he asked.

Mr Ashie Moore noted that political actors have moved away from the use of physical cash to digital platforms such as Mobile Money and bank transfers, making detection even more difficult.

“Today, MoMo is available and so is bank transfer. It is everywhere. It is very difficult to look at. I haven’t seen anything myself; it’s mostly hearsay, but I think all political parties must work seriously on it,” he added.

The Ayawaso East NDC parliamentary primary was hit with allegations of vote-buying, particularly against Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, who emerged victorious.

Baba Jamal won the contest with 431 votes, representing 45 per cent, narrowly defeating Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes, or 41 per cent, in an election clouded by inducement claims.

During the polls, Baba Jamal’s campaign team distributed 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates, sparking jostling among some voters who sought to receive the items.

Speaking to the media, Baba Jamal confirmed the distribution but denied that it was intended to influence votes. He said generosity had always been part of his public life, adding that he routinely supports people financially and materially.

In a statement issued by the President’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, it was noted that while allegations of vote-buying were made against several candidates who contested the primaries, Baba Jamal’s case stood out because he was the only serving public officer among them.

President John Dramani Mahama has since recalled Baba Jamal from his position as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the NDC has constituted a three-member committee, chaired by Kofi Totobi Quakyi, to investigate the allegations and submit its report by February 10, 2026.

Ayawaso East: Presidency, NDC bigwigs unhappy over Baba Jamal’s victory – Haruna Mohammed alleges https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-presidency-ndc-bigwigs-unhappy-over-baba-jamals-victory-haruna-mohammed-alleges/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 06:35:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628957 Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has claimed that senior officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are unhappy following Baba Jamal’s victory in the Ayawaso East parliamentary primaries held on Saturday, February 7.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe, Mr. Mohammed linked the alleged displeasure within the NDC to the President’s decision to recall Baba Jamal from his post as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, over claims of vote-buying.

According to him, the presidency, the leadership of the NDC and the parliamentary majority were dissatisfied with Baba Jamal’s victory, prompting his recall from the diplomatic position.

He further alleged that the discontent is rooted in Baba Jamal’s perceived alignment with the NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

“It is a clear chance to tell the people of Ghana that the presidency was not happy that Asiedu Nketia’s person had won the election. And all the machinery is against Baba Jamal; they don’t just like the man, they hate him, including the majority caucus in Parliament. I don’t know what he has done for him to be hated so much within the circle of the NDC,” he claimed.

Baba Jamal’s victory in the primary clears the way for him to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3.

The closely fought primary attracted significant public attention, amid reports of alleged inducement and vote-buying involving some of the aspirants.

Majority remembers late Ayawaso East MP for humility and service https://www.adomonline.com/majority-remembers-late-ayawaso-east-mp-for-humility-and-service/ Fri, 06 Feb 2026 08:05:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628302 The National Democratic Congress Majority Caucus in Parliament has paid tribute to the late Naser Toure Mahama, a former Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, praising his humility in leadership and commitment to public service.

The heartfelt condolence message highlighted the late Member of Parliament’s (MP’s) kindness, collaboration and harmony in working with other Members of Parliament.

Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, the First Deputy Majority Whip and also the National Democratic Congress MP for Ada, who led the delegation to visit Hajia Amina Adam, the wife, at her residence in Accra on Thursday, said: “His leadership in humility is a rare quality, and it’s clear our brother left a lasting impact on his constituency and the House.”

The Majority Caucus also donated GH¢100,000 to the bereaved family.

“We have to do the needful and pay our last respects, and today, I am here on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament and the Majority caucus to present GH¢100,000 to the widow and the family,” she said.

The late Mahama passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, and he has since been buried.

During the funeral on Sunday, January 11, 2026, Mr Bernard Ahiafor, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, described him as a diligent “committee man” who served on several key committees, including Energy, Roads and Transportation, and the House Committee.

Reading a tribute on behalf of Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Ahiafor said the late MP’s professional background in the oil and energy sector strengthened parliamentary oversight of petroleum regulation and licensing.

He said: “Hon. Naser was known for meticulous preparation and a strong focus on value-for-money assessments during committee deliberations, frequently interrogating whether government contracts served the best interests of taxpayers.”

Mr Ahiafor added that the late MP’s contributions on the Floor of Parliament were largely through formal parliamentary questions, focusing on drainage and flood control, health infrastructure, and hospital projects within the Ayawaso East Constituency.

Haruna Iddrisu’s office dismisses viral NDC flagbearer posters https://www.adomonline.com/haruna-iddrisus-office-dismisses-viral-ndc-flagbearer-posters/ Fri, 06 Feb 2026 07:19:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628272 The Office of the Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has dismissed as false a set of campaign-style posters circulating online suggesting he plans to contest the flagbearership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement signed by the Minister’s Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the Office said it had noted the materials spreading across social media and described them as deceptive and unauthorised.

“The Office wishes to state unequivocally that these posters did not originate from Hon. Haruna Iddrisu or his office,” the statement said, urging the public to ignore the claims and treat them with “the utmost contempt they deserve.”

The statement stressed that neither Haruna Iddrisu nor his official team had any hand in producing or distributing the posters.

According to the Office, the Tamale South MP remains fully committed to his duties as Minister for Education and as a legislator and is not pursuing any internal party leadership campaign at this time.

Mr Iddrisu is currently in Lusaka, Zambia, accompanying President John Dramani Mahama on official engagements. While in Lusaka, he is said to be working with the President to advance the government’s Reset Ghana agenda, with a special focus on policy reforms and programmes in the education sector.

The Office therefore cautioned the public against attaching any credibility to the circulating posters, describing them as false and misleading.

Ayawaso East: Hajia Amina Adams leads NDC primary in Global InfoAnalytics poll https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-hajia-amina-adams-leads-ndc-primary-in-global-infoanalytics-poll/ Fri, 06 Feb 2026 06:59:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628233 A poll conducted by research firm Global InfoAnalytics has revealed that Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of late MP Mahama Toure Naser, is in a commanding lead ahead of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2026.

The data shows Hajia Amina Adam consistently ahead of her closest rival, Ghana High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal. Among general voters in the constituency, Hajia Amina Adam is polling 58 per cent, compared to Baba Jamal’s 32 per cent.

The results suggest a clear preference for Hajia Amina Adam among the wider electorate as the party prepares for its internal contest.

Beyond general voters, the poll also modelled potential outcomes using responses from party delegates on key controversies surrounding the race.

Global InfoAnalytics noted that the NDC primaries operate under a first-past-the-post system, meaning the candidate with a simple majority wins outright. In all scenarios tested, Hajia Amina Adam consistently surpassed that threshold.

The analysis further indicated that a victory for Hajia Amina Adam could have implications for broader NDC leadership dynamics and for race modelling ahead of the 2028 general elections, as Ayawaso East is seen as a strategic constituency for comparing delegate behaviour with general voter sentiment.

The other aspirants, Constituency Chairman Mohammed Ramme, Dr. Yakubu Azindow, Najib Mohammed Sani, and Salam Daru, polled 5 per cent, 3 per cent, and 2 per cent respectively.

The Ayawaso East by-election follows the death of sitting MP Mahama Naser Toure on January 4, 2026, after a short illness.

I haven’t spoken to my NDC opponent in five years – Nyindam https://www.adomonline.com/i-havent-spoken-to-my-ndc-opponent-in-five-years-nyindam/ Thu, 05 Feb 2026 12:02:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2627952 Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, has disclosed that he has not had any personal interaction with his main political opponent from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the past five years, citing big political differences and tensions in the constituency.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr. Nyindam said he has maintained distance from the NDC parliamentary candidate throughout several election cycles and the recent legal battle over his seat.

“The NDC parliamentary candidate, have you had a conversation with him? No. For five years now, I’ve never spoken to him,” he said. “Throughout the campaign and throughout this battle, I’ve not said a word to him.”

Despite the lack of direct engagement, the MP said he still considers his opponent a brother, given their shared roots in Kpandai in the Northern Region.

“We are all coming from Kpandai. We are brothers. That’s how I see him,” he noted. “But we don’t have that kind of friendship.”

Mr Nyindam, however, stressed that his relationship with other officials of the NDC remains cordial.

“His chairman, his secretary, and other party executives, we are good,” he said, adding that the strained relationship is limited to his main rival.

He accused the NDC candidate of promoting a divisive brand of politics that has negatively affected the constituency.

“The kind of politics he does and has brought to Kpandai is different,” Mr Nyindam stated. “He’s given everybody a hell in Kpandai. Not me alone. Even within the NDC, he has caused a lot of problems.”

The comments come in the wake of a January 28, 2026, ruling by the Supreme Court, which overturned a previous decision by the Tamale High Court that had annulled Mr Nyindam’s election and ordered a rerun.

The apex court’s judgment halted plans by the Electoral Commission to organise a fresh poll and cleared the way for him to resume his duties in Parliament.

The legal dispute began on November 24, 2025, when the Tamale High Court nullified his election victory and directed that a new election be held within 30 days.

Following that ruling, Parliament officially notified the Electoral Commission of a vacancy in the Kpandai seat.

Mr Nyindam, who represents the NPP in Parliament, said he remains committed to peaceful politics and development-focused leadership, despite the challenges.

“I’m not that type,” he said, referring to confrontational politics. “My focus is on serving the people.”

The visit comes in the aftermath of the party’s presidential primaries, which concluded with a decisive outcome favoring Dr. Bawumia.

Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to Akufo-Addo for his continued support and counsel, acknowledging his encouragement following his nomination as the party’s flagbearer.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to leading a united and stronger NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Both former presidents emphasized the need for reconciliation, unity, and focus on electoral victory, reflecting a shared vision for party cohesion and strategic preparedness.

Let’s reorganise, unite for victory in 2028 – Paul Afoko urges NPP after presidential primaries https://www.adomonline.com/lets-reorganise-unite-for-victory-in-2028-paul-afoko-urges-npp-after-presidential-primaries/ Wed, 04 Feb 2026 07:10:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2627313 Aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has congratulated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following his election as the flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, describing the outcome as a clear mandate from delegates for renewal and unity.

In a statement, the former Chairman said the NPP had spoken through a “vigorous, democratic and transparent process,” producing Dr. Bawumia as the candidate to lead the party into the next national elections.

He noted that the mandate comes with the responsibility to reorganise the party, reconnect with Ghanaians, and present a “credible pathway to national renewal.”

“The task before us is clear: to reorganize, reconnect with the Ghanaian people, and present a credible pathway to national renewal. The work toward Victory 2028 begins immediately,” Afoko stated.

Afoko also commended the other aspirants who contested the flagbearership race, including Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, saying their participation strengthened the credibility of the process and deepened internal debate within the party.

According to him, contesting leadership positions does not weaken the party but expands it by engaging members and enriching its democratic culture.

Turning to party faithful across the country, Afoko called for calm and discipline after the primaries, stressing that unity must override personal preferences and temporary disagreements.

“As in any family, contestation is part of growth. Differences are expressed, positions are defended, and choices are made. But once a collective decision has been reached, unity must prevail,” he said.

He urged members not to let campaign tensions linger, adding that the next phase of the party’s journey must be defined by maturity, cohesion, and collective effort.

Afoko said the NPP’s objective now is to build an institutionally strong and strategically prepared party that values every contributor and mobilises its grassroots ahead of the 2028 elections.

“We remain one party, one family, one vision for victory. The journey to 2028 begins today. Let us move forward together with focus, discipline and purpose,” he concluded.

I am fighting against injustice done to Wakpal – Dafeamekpor on Kpandai case review https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-fighting-against-injustice-done-to-wakpal-dafeamekpor-on-kpandai-case-review/ Wed, 04 Feb 2026 06:57:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2627272 The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, says his push for a review in the Kpandai parliamentary case is driven by what he describes as a grave injustice against the NDC’s Nsala Wakpal.

“For me, it is the injustice done to Nsala Wakpal,” the South Dayi MP, said on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday.

Mr Dafeamekpor insisted the NDC has not truly lost the case. He argued the Supreme Court’s decision was influenced by facts that were deliberately concealed.

“In fact, we haven’t lost well in the Kpandai case as the Supreme Court has been misled, because these material facts were all hidden from the Court,” he said.

He accused the NPP’s legal team of intentionally creating inconsistencies around key dates in the Electoral Commission’s gazette notification to strengthen their argument that the NDC went to court too early.

“The NPP lawyer stood in court, and when Justice Pwamang queried about the date inconsistency, they said it was a genuine mistake,” he said.

“But I have established over time that there was nothing genuine about this. It was deliberate.”

He explained that the alleged manipulation was intended to align the record with the NPP’s argument that the gazette notification was dated December 24, and that the NDC’s legal action was therefore premature.

“They had to do it to align with the NPP case, that the gazette notification was 24th December and, therefore, we went to court prematurely,” he said.

Dafeamekpor said the NDC filed the case based on an earlier official communication.

“Meanwhile, we went to court on the date Jean Mensa wrote to Parliament, 23rd December,” he said.

He argued the gazette situation at the time was already confused because of inconsistencies in the numbering of parliamentary seats.

“The gazette notifications were in a confused state, because the seat numbers had exceeded those constitutionally mandated,” he said.

“If you are gazetted 274 and you are gazetted another additional four, you have 278 seats. Where is the overlapping team coming from?” he asked.

He claimed steps were later taken to correct the gazette. “So they took steps to clean it up on the sixth of January,” he said.

But he accused the Electoral Commission’s representatives of later denying that January 6 publication and describing it as an error.

“Now he comes to court and denies the 6th January Gazette publication as an error and calls it a genuine mistake,” he said.

Mr Dafeamekpor rejected the suggestion that the inconsistencies were innocent.

“How can that be a genuine error?” he asked. He argued that the number of parliamentary seats is fixed and cannot be casually misstated.

“You can’t get numbers wrong, because the number of parliamentary seats is fixed,” he said. “There’s no fraction of seats in Parliament. It is either 276 or not.”

He said the EC had already communicated specific figures to Parliament, making the later contradictions harder to justify.

“When were you not allowing your head of institution to continue to communicate with Parliament?” he asked.

He insisted the conduct in the case raises serious concerns that must be investigated.

“There’s an original letter before Parliament that the gazette notifications were on the 23rd,” he said. “So you want the EC investigated. The EC has to be investigated.”

He said Parliament, the courts, and other investigative bodies can take up the matter. “Parliament can do that. CID can do that. Any investigating body can do that,” he said.

He revealed he intends to raise the issue formally in Parliament, but said the review process comes first.

“Because we are going for a review, I want us to settle the matter on review,” he said.

Mr Dafeamekpor also argued that the confusion over gazette dates extends beyond politics, as it affects a candidate’s legal right to challenge election outcomes.

“If they toy with the dates, they dance with it. If they collude with somebody to confuse you with the dates, your right to go to court will be affected,” he said.

“That’s exactly what is at play in this matter,” he added. He said this forms the basis of the review application.

“So, this is the basis for your review. This is the basis for our review,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia emerged winner of the January 31, 2026 contest after polling 110,640 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid ballots cast, to secure the party’s ticket for the 2028 general elections.

His closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, accounting for 23.76 per cent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong followed in third position with 36,303 votes, representing 18.53 per cent. The remaining aspirants garnered significantly fewer votes.

The visit was to express gratitude to the former President for his support, guidance and counsel throughout Dr. Bawumia’s bid for the party’s top position.

The two leaders discussed key matters, including party unity, leadership and the road ahead for the NPP as it prepares for the next general elections.

Dr. Bawumia’s engagement with President Kufuor highlights the campaign’s focus on unity and cohesion within the party following what many observers have described as a keenly contested internal election involving delegates from across the country.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, January 3, Mr. Ayariga congratulated the NPP on successfully conducting its presidential primaries and commended Dr. Bawumia for emerging as the party’s flagbearer.

He also referenced the celebratory mood on the Minority side of the House, noting that many NPP Members of Parliament were clad in white to mark the victory—a gesture that influenced his own choice of attire.

“Mr. Speaker, if you observe my friends on the other side, they were all in white today to celebrate the victory. I joined them in wearing white to celebrate as well. But the reason I wore white is because the Bawumia I know, the NDC will beat him any day,” he stated.

Why I almost did not vote in recent NPP presidential primaries – Kwaku Afriyie https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-almost-did-not-vote-in-recent-npp-presidential-primaries-kwaku-afriyie/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 19:18:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2627189 Former Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, has disclosed that he nearly abstained from voting in the recently concluded New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries due to concerns about internal arrangements and the growing influence of money in party politics.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Afriyie said he remained neutral throughout the primaries despite being approached by all the aspirants.

“I wasn’t in anyone’s camp, even though they all came to see me and I received them,” he said. “But I wasn’t happy with a lot of things regarding the internal arrangement, and we must talk about them openly.”

He criticised the role of money in shaping political discourse within the party, stressing that electoral success should be based on earning the trust of the people rather than financial influence.

“I am not happy with the influence of money by the parties — all of them — in our political discourse, and I am not naive,” Dr. Afriyie noted. “Because of these things, I almost did not vote, if not for careful thought.”

According to him, such practices undermine confidence in the internal democratic processes of political parties and risk alienating committed members.

Dr. Afriyie’s comments add to growing calls within the NPP for introspection and reforms aimed at strengthening internal democracy and restoring trust among party faithful.

“If we want to win an election, we must learn to win the trust of the people,” he said, underscoring the need for integrity and transparency in party politics.

The NPP presidential primaries ended with former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, securing a landslide victory.

Dr. Bawumia polled 110,645 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid ballots cast.

More than 211,000 delegates participated in the election, voting at over 300 polling centres nationwide in what party officials described as a highly competitive internal contest.

Kennedy Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, accounting for 23.76 per cent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong came third with 36,303 votes, representing 18.53 per cent.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong followed with 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent) and 402 votes (0.21 per cent) respectively.

NPP to heal divisions after Bawumia’s win – Deputy general secretary https://www.adomonline.com/npp-to-heal-divisions-after-bawumias-win-deputy-general-secretary/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 16:37:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2627184 The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has assured party supporters that leadership is taking concrete steps to reunite members following the party’s recent presidential primary that elected Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Mr Mohammed acknowledged that internal elections often generate tensions and dissatisfaction among supporters, but insisted that reconciliation remains a top priority for the party.

“After an election like this, you will certainly have dissenting views from members who are dissatisfied with one thing or the other,” he said.

“But I want to assure everybody that we will take the needed steps to reconcile all members of our party.”

He explained that reconciliation is not limited to any single camp or individual but must involve all factions within the party, including supporters of the five aspirants who contested the primaries.

“Reconciliation is not about fine-tuning one individual or one camp,” Mr Mohammed noted. “It cuts across whether you were supporting another candidate or not. All factions and all aspirants are members, and everyone needs reconciliation.”

According to him, unity within the party goes beyond resolving personal grievances and must focus on strengthening the entire party structure.

“You are not reconciled independently. You are reconciled into a system, and that system also needs reconciliation,” he added. “The national party will take this process seriously and ensure it is carried through.”

Mr Mohammed also cautioned party members against openly supporting specific candidates during internal contests, stressing that such actions contributed to divisions within the party.

“When the national party said no officer should openly support any candidate, this was the reason,” he explained. “It did not affect only the Bawumia camp. All camps had officers supporting them.”

His comments come in the wake of the NPP’s presidential primary, held on January 31, which saw former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as the party’s candidate for the 2028 general election.

Since the announcement of the results, there have been calls from sections of the party for swift reconciliation to prevent lingering divisions and strengthen unity ahead of the national elections.

Haruna Mohammed reiterated that party leadership remains committed to inclusiveness and cohesion, urging members to put aside differences and work together for the party’s success in 2028.

According to him, the lobbyists include defeated aspirant and former NPP General Secretary, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, 2024 running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, and former Suame MP and Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu.

“Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Kwabena Agyapong, and Sarah Adwoa Safo are currently lobbying to become the running mate,” Joseph Azumah, who also doubles as a Member of Parliament’s Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, claimed on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem hosted by Omanhene Kwabena Asante.

In a rebuttal, a political aide to the newly elected flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, described the claims as baseless and unsubstantiated.

He added that although the selection of a running mate is important, Dr. Bawumia’s current preoccupation is uniting the NPP after the primaries to ensure the party’s victory in the 2028 presidential elections.

Tonto further stated that the selection of the running mate will be done in consultation with the party leadership and major stakeholders within the party.

Former Vice President Dr. Bawumia was on Saturday elected as the NPP flagbearer ahead of the 2028 election, defeating four other contenders by 110,643 votes, representing 56.48%. Other contenders were Kennedy Ohene Agyapong with 46,554 votes (23.76%), Dr. Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53%), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum with 1,999 votes (1.02%), and Kwabena Agyei Agyapong with 402 votes (0.2%).

NPP primaries: Bawumia’s vote drop ‘expected’ due to fierce contest – Manhyia South MP https://www.adomonline.com/npp-primaries-bawumias-vote-drop-expected-due-to-fierce-contest-manhyia-south-mp/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 11:05:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626997 The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South constituency, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, says he is not surprised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s votes dropped in the NPP’s Presidential Primary.

During an interview on Nhyira FM’s breakfast show Kuro Yi Mu Nsem with Barima Kofi Dawson, the lawmaker attributed the drop in votes to the intensified competition.

“Bawumia’s votes in the flagbearer race slipped from 61.4% in 2023 to 56.47% in 2026, and I am not surprised because it is a sign of how tough and competitive the contest was,” he said.

He described the NPP’s 2026 presidential contest as the most fiercely contested primary in Ghana’s Fourth Republic history, unmatched by any other party’s internal elections.

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah urged the party members to take pride in the outcome of the primary, noting it has thrown up three strong frontrunners with solid ideas and job-creation plans that can be leveraged for the 2028 general elections.

“Every NPP member should be proud of how the presidential primary played out. Of course, there were some heated words thrown around during the campaign, but that is expected in every political contest. We will definitely learn from it and tighten things up moving forward.

“We have got three strong frontrunners: Dr. Bawumia with very rich ideas, together with Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong with a job creation mindset. If we package all that, we have got a winning narrative to take to the Ghanaian people ahead of the 2028 general election,” he stated.

When asked if Dr. Bawumia is the Ghanaian electorate’s top pick, he pointed out that it was Ghanaians themselves who were urging party delegates to choose him as their flagbearer.

“Before the primary, Ghanaians in marketplaces, on radio, and everywhere were saying they will only vote for NPP in 2028 if Bawumia leads the ticket. They emphasized their decision to opt out of the 2024 election had nothing to do with Bawumia being the flagbearer.”

Nana Agyei also pointed out that the party’s base is gaining steam, “things are looking up, and they are feeling more energized”.

Comparing Bawumia’s chances against any candidate the NDC puts up in 2028, he noted that historically, the ruling party normally struggled to secure a second term.

“Ghana’s trend since 1992 shows incumbent governments struggle to secure a second term; it nearly lost it, so the ruling party needs to gear up ahead of 2028,” he noted.

Winning back Ghanaians’ trust is the bigger battle – Oppong Nkrumah after Bawumia’s victory https://www.adomonline.com/winning-back-ghanaians-trust-is-the-bigger-battle-oppong-nkrumah-after-bawumias-victory/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 10:13:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626967 Unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is important, but it is not enough to guarantee electoral victory, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has warned, as the party begins preparations toward the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, the Offoase Ayirebi MP and key member of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team said the party must not fall into the trap of believing that internal cohesion alone would return it to power.

“As they say, with a broom, if you pull out one, it will break. But if it’s united, you have a formidable force,” he said.

“So we are clear in our minds that when we are united as a party, we are a strong force, but that is only the foundation.”

“We are not under any illusion that all that we need is a united house. No, absolutely not,” he stressed.

Dr Bawumia was declared the winner of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer race by the Electoral Commission after securing 56.48 per cent of the valid votes cast, earning him the party’s ticket for the 2028 presidential election.

But Oppong Nkrumah said the bigger task ahead goes beyond party unity and internal celebration.

“For us, we think that the bigger challenge is how to win back the love and the trust of the average Ghanaian, especially the first time,” he said.

He explained that the process must begin with honesty and self-reflection.

“It starts with a lot of candour in what we did that went right, what we did that went wrong, and being able to communicate that to the Ghanaian people,” he said.

“That this is where we got it right. This is where we got it wrong. If we have an opportunity, this is what we’re going to do differently.”

According to him, work is already underway within the party to reposition it ahead of the next election cycle.

“There’s a lot of work behind the scenes that we are beginning to look into,” he said, adding that “to win 2028 or to give us a very strong footing in 2028, unity is only a foundation.”

Oppong Nkrumah highlighted ongoing internal reforms, particularly in policy development, as part of the reset.

“We are now going through a process of reorganising,” he said. “If you paid attention to our constitutional amendments, for the first time we’ve literally set up like a policy secretariat by constitutional fiat in the party.”

He said the party is working to ensure that the ideas it presents to Ghanaians in 2028 are widely accepted.

“We’re going through a process of ensuring that we populate it and ensure, therefore, that the ideas we come to 2028 with are ideas that also have a broader base of support within this ideology,” he said.

Addressing concerns about Dr Bawumia’s margin of victory, Oppong Nkrumah argued that the numbers should be seen within context.

“Every election is dynamic, and it’s different,” he said, noting that the structure of the contest itself had changed.

“That time you had four in the final. This time you had about five,” he explained. “Even the candidates were different.”

He said Dr Bawumia expanded his reach across the party. “He’s moved from 213 constituencies that he won to 232 constituencies,” he said.

More importantly, Oppong Nkrumah argued, the result forces humility and openness.

“For me, one of the good things is the fact that he doesn’t have, for example, a 95 per cent mandate in the party,” he said.

“That always causes you to listen and consider all of the other opinions and ideas that are being expressed,” he added. “You don’t go gung ho.”

For Oppong Nkrumah, that restraint could prove decisive. “It fine-tunes the ideas you go to the table with,” he said. “So it is actually, for me, a blessing.”

I found NPP primaries tougher than 2024 election – Alhassan Tampuli https://www.adomonline.com/i-found-npp-primaries-tougher-than-2024-election-alhassan-tampuli/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 08:03:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626849 Alhassan Tampuli, Member of Parliament for Gushegu and a key figure on Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries were more difficult to manage than the party’s 2024 general election campaign.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr Tampuli reflected on the intensity of the internal race that eventually produced Dr Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer.

According to him, the contest required nonstop engagement and rapid decision-making because circumstances were constantly changing across constituencies.

“I was telling some of our team members that I found this election even more challenging and tougher than the 2024 elections. The dynamics were so fluid—one day something happens, another day another thing happens, and you have to be reacting,” he said.

He explained that campaign managers could not afford to slow down, as rivals were constantly moving into areas already covered.

“It is so difficult for you to take your leg off the pedal. As soon as you leave a place, somebody goes there. You could find out some places you’ve been already, somebody has gone to roughen up the place, so you have to leave your constituency and go to some other constituencies,” Mr Tampuli added.

The NPP primaries, held nationwide, saw former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as the clear winner with 110,643 votes (56.48%), securing the party’s ticket for the 2028 general elections.

Businessman and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes (23.76%), followed by former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53%). Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum polled 1,999 votes (1.02%), while former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong trailed with 402 votes (0.21%).

Mr Tampuli’s comments underscore the fierce nature of the internal contest and the high level of organisation required to secure victory in the NPP’s closely watched presidential primary.

NPP grassroots ready to unite, but leaders divided – Mussa Dankwa https://www.adomonline.com/npp-grassroots-ready-to-unite-but-leaders-divided-mussa-dankwa/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 06:42:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626801 Polling data suggests the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s biggest unity challenge after its flagbearer contest is not at the base of the party but at the top, where unresolved tensions among campaign leaders could shape its road to 2028.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, pollster and Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwa, said the party’s grassroots remain largely united and hopeful, even as concerns linger about divisions among senior campaign actors.

“The polling data shows that about 88% of NPP delegates are hopeful that there will be unity in the party,” he said, stressing that “the grassroots, the problem is not them.”

According to Dankwa, the real risk lies higher up the party structure.

“The problem will be at the top level of the campaigns,” he said, warning that unresolved disagreements among leading figures could undermine efforts to consolidate support.

He argued that once those differences are addressed, the party’s base would fall in line.

“Once we are able to reconcile them, I don’t think there’ll be a problem at the bottom,” he said.

Dankwa said the next phase of the party’s rebuilding effort must focus on clarity and cooperation among key political actors who contested the flagbearer race.

He pointed to the need for visible reconciliation and defined roles going forward.

“Now, moving forward, how do you do that?” he asked, before raising questions about expectations within the party.

“What role does Ken Agyapong want to play going forward? What role does Bryan want to play in the campaign going forward?”

He said those decisions cannot be left ambiguous, insisting that unity must be elevated above individual ambition.

“They must be seen to have put a sense of unity above everything else,” he said.

Mussa Dankwa warned that the stakes are too high for internal fractures.

“For where NPP is now, they don’t need any division in their ranks to really face the NDC going forward,” he said.

While expressing optimism, he acknowledged lingering tensions within parts of the party’s leadership structure.

“I believe, and I sincerely hope, that both camps would do that,” he said, referring to reconciliation efforts.

However, he added that internal signals suggest uneven sentiment across factions.

“What sometimes you get to feel is that as people around Ken’s team are a lot more bitter,” he said.

The comments come in the aftermath of the NPP’s flagbearer election, which saw Dr Mahamudu Bawumia declared winner by the Electoral Commission after securing 56.48 per cent of the total votes cast, earning him the party’s mandate to lead into the 2028 general elections.

His closest contender, former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent.

It is too early for conversations about Bawumia’s running mate – Opare Ansah https://www.adomonline.com/it-is-too-early-for-conversations-about-bawumias-running-mate-opare-ansah/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 14:01:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626636 Frederick Opare-Ansah, campaign manager for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on party members to slow down discussions about who should join him on the ticket for the 2028 general elections, describing the conversation as premature and potentially distracting.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Opare-Ansah said the immediate focus for the party should be rebuilding after a bruising political season, not ticket balancing.

“It is way too early to have conversations about a running mate. Our biggest challenge now is to reorganise. We must be patient,” he stated.

He emphasized that any decision on a vice-presidential candidate must be strategic, taking into account the political environment at the time, including the identity and strength of the opposition’s flagbearer.

“We do not even know who the NDC will bring. In choosing a running mate, it is a strategic move. Depending on their candidate, you need to choose from a prime area, otherwise it can affect you,” he explained.

Mr Opare-Ansah also noted that history shows running mates are usually selected much closer to elections, citing former President John Dramani Mahama’s timeline as an example.

“Mahama was elected candidate in May 2023, but he chose his running mate in 2024. Mostly, we elect the running mate in the election year. So nobody should stampede Dr Bawumia and the party into choosing now,” he said.

Beyond ticket considerations, the campaign manager admitted the NPP faces deeper internal challenges that require urgent attention. He observed that the party’s public image has suffered and needs careful repair before any major electoral calculations are made.

“The party is not in good shape. We must put our house in order. Our public image has been eroded. The Danquah–Busia–Kufuor NPP is not the same, and there is a lot that is not going well,” Mr Opare-Ansah remarked.

He stressed that reconciliation and restructuring should take precedence over political speculation.

“We must reconcile and restructure the party to a better position because we need everyone on board. If we rush decisions, it will not be in our interest,” he added.

He therefore appealed to party communicators and supporters to avoid fuelling early debates about Dr Bawumia’s running mate and instead focus on unity, discipline, and renewal ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Let’s not mock Prophet El-Bernard – Bawumia’s team urges after failed prophecy https://www.adomonline.com/lets-not-mock-prophet-el-bernard-bawumias-team-urges-after-failed-prophecy/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 12:28:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626547 Frederick Opare-Ansah, campaign manager for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on Ghanaians and party supporters to respect prophets and avoid mocking them following the January 31 presidential primaries, emphasizing faith, humility, and spiritual discernment in public life.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem after Dr. Bawumia’s decisive win, Opare-Ansah said the campaign team took prophetic declarations seriously, using them to guide prayer, reflection, and strategic planning.

“The Bawumia camp believes in the word of God. We listen when God speaks through men,” he said.

He explained that forewarnings and prophecies are meant for reflection and guidance rather than ridicule.

“When you start a journey and there are forewarnings, you need to go before God, seek His face, pray for forgiveness, and ask for guidance on the way forward to avert any calamity—then you work hard too,” he said.

Opare-Ansah cited prophecies about Kennedy Agyapong during the campaign, noting that the team approached them in good faith.

“So the prophecies that came for Kennedy Agyapong helped us to unlock the mystery,” he said.

He warned against ridiculing prophets, referencing Galatians 6:7.

“Yesterday someone wanted to bring up Prophet El-Bernard’s issue, but I cautioned the person about what the Bible tells us about mocking His prophets—it has dire implications,” Opare-Ansah stated.

Prophet Bernard ElBernard Nelson-Eshun, founder of Spiritlife Revival Ministries, had publicly predicted Kennedy Agyapong’s victory. Opare-Ansah noted, “Whatever El-Bernard saw, I believe he was doing the work of God. He believed in it and made it public. It was up to us to pray and seek God to overturn it.”

He added that biblical examples guide believers on responding to prophecy, citing Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and the Israelites seeking God before battle.

“Everything that came from men of God, we listened to and acted upon in good faith. But the hand of God was also at work,” Opare-Ansah said.

Prophet ElBernard later publicly apologized for the prophecy that did not materialize, saying: “That word did not come to pass. I missed it. I was wrong, I am deeply sorry, and I ask for your forgiveness.”

He announced a temporary break from public preaching to focus on prayer, study, and spiritual reflection, ensuring accountability in how prophetic messages are shared.

Bryan Acheampong is a force to reckon with in the near future – Stephen Amoah https://www.adomonline.com/bryan-acheampong-is-a-force-to-reckon-with-in-the-near-future-stephen-amoah/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 12:13:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626542 The Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr Stephen Amoah, has said that he is not surprised by Bryan Acheampong’s performance in the NPP presidential primaries and that he should be seen as a strong political figure going forward.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, during discussions on a review of the NPP presidential primaries, Dr Amoah was asked to share his thoughts on how Dr Acheampong fared in the contest.

In his response, Dr Amoah outlined what he described as the key factors that shape success in political competitions.

“When it comes to politics, there are three main issues you cannot ignore,” he said. “The financial capability, the goodwill or the network, and how you strategise or your personal strategy.”

According to him, Dr Acheampong demonstrated strength in all three areas, which explains his performance in the race.

“I think he had all three, so I am not surprised at all. Honestly, I’m not surprised. And you cannot keep scorn on the chances of others, of course,” Dr Amoah stated.

He added that Dr Acheampong should be seen as a strong political figure going forward.

“I think he’s a force to reckon with in the near future,” he said, while cautioning that political circumstances can change. “All things being equal, and all times are not equal.”

Dr Amoah also highlighted how Dr Acheampong positioned himself among the other leading contenders in the primaries.

“I think he was able to position himself well between Dr Bawumia and then Kennedy Agyapong. He was smart enough to come out with some sort of information and messages that illustrated him as the peaceful one and the one who can bring peace and unity.”

He explained that such messaging likely resonated with party delegates and observers. “I’m sure people look at all those things. But I think he’s done well.”

“I congratulate him as much as I congratulate the other candidates,” he added.

In the just-ended NPP Presidential primaries, Former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong secured 36,303 votes, equivalent to 18.53 per cent.

Koku Anyidoho’s interesting take on Bawumia’s victory https://www.adomonline.com/koku-anyidohos-interesting-take-on-bawumias-victory/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 12:12:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626530 Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has drawn a striking parallel between the late former President John Evans Atta-Mills and newly elected New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, arguing that Ghana’s politics often rewards loyalty, patience and the gradual building of personal identity.

In a reflective post on X following Dr Bawumia’s victory on Saturday, January 31, 2026, Mr Anyidoho revisited the early political journey of Professor Atta-Mills when he emerged on the national scene as Vice President under former President Jerry John Rawlings.

According to him, Atta-Mills’ discipline and humility were often misunderstood.

“Being loyal did not mean he did not have his own mettle,” Anyidoho wrote, adding that loyalty to a leader who elevates one to high office “is a divinely important thing to do because it comes with strong blessings.”

He noted that many observers misinterpreted Atta-Mills’ calm posture as weakness.

“People misconstrued the humility and loyalty to mean weakness — some labelled him a ‘poodle’,” he recalled.

Anyidoho said tensions also emerged within the NDC when Rawlings endorsed Atta-Mills to lead the party into the 2000 elections, with sections of the party unhappy with the choice.

“Some people within the NDC were obviously not happy… because they said he was an ‘outsider’,” he stated.

In his assessment, Atta-Mills’ defeat in that election was not rooted in voter rejection but in public perception.

“Candidate Atta-Mills lost that election, not because he was rejected, but because he was seen to be in the shadow of President Rawlings,” Anyidoho explained.

With time, he said, the former Vice President built his own political identity and earned the trust of Ghanaians.

“Professor Atta-Mills established his own identity, and Ghanaians warmed up to him; his message of ‘Asomdwe’, humility, love for God and country made it possible for Ghanaians to make him President,” he wrote, adding that Atta-Mills “lived beyond expectation.”

Drawing parallels with present developments, Anyidoho argued that Dr Bawumia’s political journey follows a similar trajectory.

“Does DMB’s story not follow the same script; picked by Nana Addo; becomes Vice; remains loyal to his boss; served in humility; endorsed by his boss to lead the NPP; considered to be an ‘outsider’; lost an election; his party elects him as leader again; now has his own identity?” he asked.

He suggested that, like Atta-Mills, Dr Bawumia is gradually stepping out of the shadow of incumbency and crafting a distinct political brand ahead of the next general elections.

Anyidoho concluded that Ghana’s political evolution often follows familiar rhythms.

“History has a very interesting way of repeating itself,” he noted, hinting that the unfolding Bawumia chapter may yet echo the calm, patient rise that once carried Atta-Mills to the presidency.

Bawumia may struggle if NPP fails to rebuild image — Kabila https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-may-struggle-if-npp-fails-to-rebuild-image-kabila/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 11:58:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626492 A lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Dr Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, has cautioned that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s chances in the 2028 general elections will depend not only on his personal qualities, but also on how attractive and united the New Patriotic Party (NPP) appears to voters.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Dr. Bomfeh used d a metaphor to explain the challenge facing the newly elected flagbearer.

“I’d only say that you see, the flagbearer is a bearer of a flag. No matter how good, competent, suitable, perfect the bearer would be, if the flag is unattractive, you will have a problem,” he said.

According to him, Dr Bawumia must focus on fixing internal weaknesses within the party and projecting unity ahead of the 2028 polls.

“Definitely, that flag has issues. It has punches; they need to fix them. It needs to reorganise itself,” Dr Bomfeh added.

He stressed that beyond policy promises, the NPP must work hard to reconnect with Ghanaians and address issues affecting their daily lives.

“Bawumia should be able to be seen, not only do, but be seen to be doing what will rally them around a united flag… and reposition the party as one that understands the issues people are grappling with and offers solutions,” he said.

Dr Bomfeh’s comments come in the wake of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s victory in the NPP’s presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The former Vice-President won the contest with 110,643 votes, securing a clear majority of the 195,901 valid votes cast nationwide, according to official results collated by the Electoral Commission.

His closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, followed by Dr Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum polled 1,999 votes to place fourth, while Kwabena Agyei Agyepong came fifth with 402 votes.

In all, 196,462 votes were cast, with 561 ballots rejected.

Dr Bawumia’s victory officially makes him the NPP’s candidate for the 2028 presidential election, as the party seeks to retain power after two consecutive terms in government.

Dr Bomfeh noted that while Dr Bawumia brings experience and competence to the table, rebuilding public confidence in the party remains critical.

“The message and the messenger must align,” he said, emphasising the need for consistency between the party’s promises and its actions.

Bryan Acheampong remains loyal to NPP despite primary loss — Adomako Kissi https://www.adomonline.com/bryan-acheampong-remains-loyal-to-npp-despite-primary-loss-adomako-kissi/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 09:33:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626484 Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, former Anyaa Sowutwuom Member of Parliament (MP) and member of Dr. Bryan Acheampong team, has reaffirmed his committment to the unity and progress of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), despite his defeat in the recent presidential primaries.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Dr Adomako Kissi said the former contender has always placed the party’s interest above personal ambition.

“Bryan will always be party first. He will always be party first, and I know him for that. That has been his thing always — party, party, party,” he said.

According to him, Dr Acheampong’s campaign was driven by a desire to restore what he described as the core values and traditions that once made the NPP widely popular across the country.

“Based on his manifesto, I know that he will push us as a party to return to the true culture of patriotism, selflessness, and the things that made NPP NPP,” Dr Adomako Kissi stated.

He added that one of the central messages of Dr Acheampong’s campaign was the need for the party to reconnect with its roots and winning strategies.

“He wanted the party to go back to basics and return to the strategies that made our party win and made it likeable to all of Ghana,” he said.

Dr Adomako Kissi’s comments come amid discussions about how the NPP will manage internal relations following its presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerged winner of the contest with 110,643 votes, securing a clear majority of the 195,901 valid votes cast, according to official results collated by the Electoral Commission.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, while Dr Bryan Acheampong finished third with 36,303 votes. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum polled 1,999 votes to place fourth, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong came fifth with 402 votes.

In all, 196,462 votes were cast, with 561 ballots rejected.

Some commentators have suggested that how figures like Dr Acheampong are integrated into the party’s campaign machinery could influence the NPP’s chances in the next polls.

Dr Adomako Kissi, however, maintained that Dr Acheampong remains firmly committed to the party’s collective goal of returning to power.

“He cannot depart from that,” he said, referring to his loyalty to the party. “His focus has always been about strengthening the NPP and making it attractive to Ghanaians again.”

Running mate slot not a reward for second place – Miracles Aboagye https://www.adomonline.com/running-mate-slot-not-a-reward-for-second-place-miracles-aboagye/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 07:17:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626395 The camp of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has downplayed suggestions that a strong showing in the party’s presidential primaries automatically boosts an aspirant’s chances of being chosen as running mate for the 2028 elections.

Speculation, particularly on social media, has pointed to Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s performance in the flagbearer race as potentially placing him in pole position for the vice-presidential slot.

However, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to Dr. Bawumia, insisted that placement in the primaries is not part of the criteria for selecting a running mate.

“The selection of the mate is purely the prerogative of the candidate in consultation with the National Council,” he said.

According to Mr. Aboagye, several factors guide the choice of a vice-presidential candidate, but finishing second, third, or fourth in the internal race does not influence the decision.

“There are several criteria that come into play. One of them does not include becoming second or third in the contest,” he explained.

He added that all aspirants who contested alongside Dr. Bawumia remain potential choices, but not because of their placement in the primaries.

“All the aspirants we ran with Dr. Bawumia are people who could actually be running mates, but not because they ran with him and were second, third, or fourth,” he said.

Mr. Aboagye noted that the final decision rests with Dr. Bawumia in collaboration with the party’s National Council and will be guided by strategic indicators aimed at securing electoral victory.

“It is a prerogative of the candidate in consultation with the National Council,” he said, adding: “When the time is due, the indicators will be used to ensure that the right person, the best person, is selected to run with Dr. Bawumia to give us the outcome that we want as a party.”

Dr. Bawumia was officially declared the winner of the NPP flagbearer contest after polling 110,645 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid ballots cast, securing the party’s ticket for the 2028 general elections.

His closest challenger, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent of the total.

United we stand, divided we fall – Bawumia tells NPP after presidential primary victory https://www.adomonline.com/united-we-stand-divided-we-fall-bawumia-tells-npp-after-presidential-primary-victory/ Sat, 31 Jan 2026 22:32:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626263 Former Vice President and newly elected New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on party members to set aside differences and unite behind a shared vision as the party prepares for the next general elections.

Speaking at the party’s headquarters in Accra following his official declaration on Saturday, January 31, Dr Bawumia urged supporters and party faithful to put aside any reservations and collaborate, emphasising that unity is essential to preserving the party’s values and shaping its future.

“Let go whatever reservations they have and come together. We need every idea, every voice and every piece of advice to help us preserve and project a proud tradition bequeath to us by our forebears,” he said.

He reminded members that internal contests and disagreements are a familiar feature of Ghanaian politics, noting that the NPP has navigated similar moments in the past and emerged stronger each time.

“United we stand and divided we fall. Let me remind you, dear party members, that whatever we’ve gone through during the past few months is not new in the politics of Ghana. We have been through this on a number of occasions and on each of them we have shown that we have the resilience and fortitude to overcome and even emerge stronger, and herein lies the opportunity,” he added.

Dr Bawumia won the NPP flagbearer race decisively, polling 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent, and positioning himself to lead the party into the next general elections.

His closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, came second with 46,554 votes (23.76%), followed by Dr Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53%). Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum placed fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02%), and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong came fifth with 402 votes (0.21%).

Speaking to JoyNews on Saturday at the NPP Headquarters in Accra, John Ntim Fordjour said the outcome of the internal elections reflects renewed confidence in Dr Bawumia’s leadership and the party’s readiness to unite behind a single candidate ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“After this contest, we have one train, one party, one camp, the NPP camp,” he said.

“Dr Bawumia’s victory is a win for all. It is a win for Hon Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Engineer Kwame Agyapong, and every team that contested.

Mr Fordjour stressed that the party must now rally behind its flagbearer and urged the party supporters across all camps to put aside differences and work together towards a common goal.

“We are appealing to all the rank and file to come on board. Let us wage a united campaign like never before. Let us show force, strength and unity, and recapture power in 2028,” he added.

According to him, the decisive outcome represents an overwhelming endorsement of Dr Bawumia as the leader capable of leading the party back to power.

“It is an indication of renewed confidence in the leadership of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the leader who will lead the party to victory in 2028,” he added.

Mr Fordjour noted that the campaign was guided by extensive data collection and internal surveys, which gave the team confidence going into the primaries.

“The entire team, led by Dr Bawumia, worked extremely hard. Along the way, a lot of data was collected, and surveys were conducted to guide our operations and campaign, so we knew we were going to win. The outcome is not too different from what was projected,” he explained.

Beyond the victory itself, the former minister emphasised the peaceful nature of the polls, dismissing pre-election fears of violence and internal chaos.

“Contrary to what naysayers predicted, that there would be bloodshed, chaos and acrimony, we have witnessed one of the most peaceful nationwide elections in any political party,” he said. “It was violence-free, calm, orderly, free, transparent and fair.”

He described the smooth conduct of the primaries as a sign of the party’s internal strength and democratic maturity.

“This is a strong indication of a new awakening of the strength and splendour of the New Patriotic Party as a credible political alternative. All glory goes to God,” he stated.

A charged atmosphere has engulfed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) national headquarters in Asylum Down as party supporters, executives, and media personnel await the Electoral Commission’s official declaration of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer.

From the early hours of the day, the party office has been a hive of activity. Party paraphernalia in the NPP’s red, white, and blue colours dominate the surroundings, while supporters chant slogans and wave flags, expressing confidence in a victory many describe as “decisive and historic.”

Security presence has been heightened, with police officers deployed at strategic points to ensure order, as accredited journalists from across the country take positions in anticipation of the announcement.

Inside the headquarters, senior party officials and members of Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team have been seen engaging in quiet conversations, projecting calm assurance as the party braces for the formal confirmation of its next presidential candidate.

Although the Electoral Commission is yet to make the official declaration, the mood at the NPP headquarters suggests a party already preparing for the next phase—uniting its base and turning attention to the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia, who served two terms as Vice President, is widely expected to be unveiled as the NPP’s flagbearer, a development supporters believe positions the party strongly for the upcoming national contest.

Dr Acheampong made the concession in a telephone conversation with Dr Bawumia shortly after voting ended nationwide. During the call, he acknowledged the outcome of the contest and described the process as a victory for the party’s democratic culture.

“I just called to congratulate you for a very good elections, you have done well. I think this is a God factor, so let’s keep it like that. Big brother, congratulations, democracy has won. Internal elections has won,” Dr Acheampong said.

The Abetifi Member of Parliament was one of five contenders seeking the endorsement of 211,849 delegates in the closely contested primary. Following the outcome, he signalled his readiness to close his campaign and rally behind the presumptive winner.

He indicated that he would formally meet Dr Bawumia during the official declaration to resolve outstanding campaign matters and demonstrate unity within the party.

Dr Acheampong’s early concession mirrors similar gestures by other contenders as constituency results from across the country showed Dr Bawumia building a commanding lead.

Political observers say the move is expected to reduce post-primary tension and help the party consolidate as it prepares for the next phase of its electoral strategy.

The NPP presidential primary featured Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong and Dr Bryan Acheampong, and was conducted nationwide using internal party registers rather than biometric verification devices.

By publicly congratulating Dr Bawumia and committing to meet him at the official declaration, Dr Acheampong reinforced calls for cohesion as the NPP shifts focus from internal competition to broader national political preparations.

The delegates have spoken; let’s stay calm – Kennedy Agyapong urges supporters https://www.adomonline.com/the-delegates-have-spoken-lets-stay-calm-kennedy-agyapong-urges-supporters/ Sat, 31 Jan 2026 19:20:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626197

New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has appealed to his supporters to remain calm and united following early outcomes from the party’s presidential primaries.

Speaking to journalists after results from a number of constituencies showed him trailing in the race, Mr Agyapong stressed the importance of discipline and respect for the party’s internal democratic processes.

“We have to stay calm. We believe in the party. The delegates have spoken, and we have to take it,” he stated.

He warned supporters against taking steps that could injure the party’s cohesion or turn frustrations against fellow members.

“Do not use this against anybody in the party. Once they have decided, let’s all come together as party members and work together.”

Reflecting on his political journey, Mr Agyapong noted that setbacks are part of public life and should be handled with maturity.

“In politics, you can win, you can lose. I’m a veteran politician, so I know. I’ve gone through several defeats.”

He said he had mentally prepared himself for any possible outcome.

“I cushioned myself and expected the worst, and the worst has happened. But the worst doesn’t mean that it is the end of life.”

Mr Agyapong also rejected calls by some supporters to protest the outcome by withholding votes in future elections.

“Don’t say ‘no Ken, no vote’. If it had been Ken, what would other contestants’ supporters have said? So ‘no Ken, no vote’ should be out.”

Thanking his campaign team, he praised their commitment throughout the contest and urged supporters not to lose heart.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Team Ken for the wonderful work you’ve done. We all admit we worked hard, but God’s time is the best. He knows what is good for us.”

He concluded with an appeal for optimism despite disappointment.

“I know most of you are dejected. You have to keep your spirit up, because once we have life, we have everything. So don’t be dejected,” he said.
