This was contained in a statement signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, on July 25, 2025.

The party detailed the procedures for the primaries and emphasised the need for full compliance from all aspirants and stakeholders.

As part of efforts to promote inclusion and gender equality, the NDC has approved a 50% reduction in filing fees for female aspirants and persons living with disabilities (PWDs).

Nomination forms will be available at the party’s Eastern Regional Office and must be submitted there upon completion.

Aspirants will be granted access to the delegates’ list only after verification of payment of the full filing fee.

“All payments must be made directly into the party’s official account at UMB Bank, Adabraka Branch,” the statement noted, adding that cheques and bankers’ drafts will not be accepted.

The party reiterated its commitment to fairness and inclusivity in the internal election process and urged all aspirants to conduct their campaigns with decorum and respect.

“The party expects all aspirants to operate in the spirit of decency and fairness, upholding the democratic values of the NDC,” the statement concluded.

The by-election has become necessary following the passing of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Meanwhile, barring any last-minute changes, the NDC has scheduled the election for Monday, August 4, 2025.

NPP flagbearer race: I know Kwasi Kwarteng will come back home if… – Adutwum  https://www.adomonline.com/npp-flagbearer-race-i-know-kwasi-kwarteng-will-come-back-home-if-adutwum/ Fri, 25 Jul 2025 11:56:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559806 Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, says he harbours no resentment toward former Education Ministry spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, over his open support for fellow contender Kennedy Agyapong.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, the former Education Minister said he respects Mr. Kwarteng’s political choice, stressing that loyalty must never be coerced in politics.

“I am not surprised he is in a different camp because I believe we all have the freedom to do as we please. I never knew him personally, but I gave him an opportunity to serve based on a recommendation. I trained him, and he did his job well while it lasted, and I commend him for that,” Dr. Adutwum noted.

He acknowledged the concerns about Mr. Kwarteng’s alignment with the former Assin Central MP but emphasized that every party member has the right to choose their own path.

Dr. Adutwum further revealed that some key figures currently backing his campaign were previously aligned with other aspirants, underscoring the importance of unity ahead of the 2028 elections.

“I am not pained that he is supporting another aspirant because it is the same party. When God helps me and I become flagbearer, I believe Kwasi Kwarteng will come back home,” he said.

He expressed confidence that Mr. Kwarteng would throw his support behind him should he emerge victorious in the flagbearer race on January 31, 2026.

Dr. Adutwum added that internal competition should not sow division within the party, stressing that the bigger goal is securing victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.

Running on a campaign of transformational leadership and educational reform, Dr. Adutwum has positioned himself as a unifier determined to bring all factions of the party together.

Meanwhile, the NPP has announced that nominations for the flagbearer race will officially open by July 31, 2025.

81 candidates apply to run in Cameroon’s presidential elections https://www.adomonline.com/81-candidates-apply-to-run-in-cameroons-presidential-elections/ Thu, 24 Jul 2025 08:34:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559175 It’s a record number: 81 candidate applications to run in the presidential elections set for October this year were made to Cameroon’s national body in charge of organising elections by the deadline on last Monday at midnight. Among the hopefuls are many second-time runners.

After breaking away from supporting President Paul Biya earlier this year, Bello Bouba Maïgari is running in a presidential race for the second time in his political career.

The same goes for Maurice Kamto and Cabral Libii, with both also changing political party affiliations for the elections.

The flood of applications meanwhile remains dominated by men: out of the 81 total applications, only seven female candidates declared their intention to run in the presidential elections, among them Eliane Véronique Eboutou and independent candidates, Mbengono Zouame Epse Ndzie Ngono Guyleine and Géneviève Zeh Amvene.

Biya’s grip on power is unlikely to be broken. Among the men, it is the incumbent President and oldest head of state in Africa Paul Biya who dominates the list.

The 92-year-old, who has held power for the past four decades, recently declared his intention to run for office again despite growing concerns over his health and ability to lead the country.

Some local media speculated that the number of candidates could point to a growing wish for political change from the population, as well as a fracturing of Cameroon’s political landscape.

Despite Biya’s age, the President’s grip on power is unlikely to loosen through elections whose democratic nature is doubted, according to analysts.

Last week, Biya also reshuffled top military ranks in what was seen as a way to ensure his renewed run for the presidency would have the army’s backing.

The country now waits for the decision of the electoral council, set to approve or reject each application in the coming weeks. The final list of candidates can be published at the latest 60 days before the election.

NPP can only win Akwatia by-election with Ama Sey – Some constituents https://www.adomonline.com/npp-can-only-win-akwatia-by-election-with-ama-sey-some-constituents/ Thu, 24 Jul 2025 07:56:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559159 A section of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members and sympathisers in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region are rallying behind former MP Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as “Ama Sey,” as their preferred candidate for the upcoming by-election.

The constituents believe Ama Sey is best positioned to succeed the late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, and help the party retain the seat.

They have, therefore, appealed to the NPP leadership to exercise prudence in selecting a candidate to represent the party.

Mr. Kumi, who was serving his first term, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief illness. The seat is yet to be declared vacant as the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, awaits formal communication from the bereaved family before the Clerk can notify the Electoral Commission.

Speaking to Adom News, Fredrick Kwame Gyekye, Campaign Coordinator for Ama Sey, thanked constituents for recognising the achievements of the former MP. He described her as the most popular and influential political figure in the area and reaffirmed that she remains the party’s strongest contender for victory.

Mr. Gyekye cited her record of development and support for entrepreneurship during her tenure as MP, which, he said, have endeared her to the people and intensified calls for her return.

“Despite other potential contestants, Ama Sey is the clear choice for the NPP to retain the seat,” he said, urging the party’s leadership to heed the calls from the grassroots.

Ama Sey is credited with defeating National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Baba Jamal in the 2016 general election. However, she narrowly lost the NPP parliamentary primaries ahead of the 2020 elections to the late Mr. Kumi by just four votes. She contested again in the 2023 primaries but lost to him a second time.

Mahama refers electoral violence report to AG for legal review https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-refers-electoral-violence-report-to-ag-for-legal-review/ Wed, 23 Jul 2025 11:26:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558805 President John Dramani Mahama has referred a comprehensive report on electoral violence recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections to the Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, for legal review and advice.

The report, submitted by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, details violent incidents that marred both elections, including shootings and clashes between political party supporters and security personnel.

According to the findings, eight people were killed during the 2020 elections, while three others lost their lives in the 2024 polls. Several others sustained injuries across various constituencies.

The IGP’s report was submitted in response to a directive issued by President Mahama shortly after taking office. This follows sustained calls from civil society organisations for accountability and transparency in addressing politically motivated violence.

By referring the report to the Attorney-General, President Mahama aims to ensure justice for the victims and to explore legal measures that will help prevent similar occurrences in future elections.

The presidency has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and restoring public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.

Ablekuma North NDC supporters grace Ewurabena Aubynn’s swearing-in [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-ndc-supporters-grace-ewurabena-aubynns-swearing-in-video/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 12:48:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558423 Parliament witnessed a wave of celebration on Monday, July 21, as scores of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters from Ablekuma North thronged the House to witness the official swearing-in of Ewurabena Aubynn as the Member of Parliament (MP).

Her induction follows a hard-fought victory in a parliamentary rerun for the constituency held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Clad in NDC colours, the elated supporters cheered as Aubynn took the oath of office, pledging to serve her constituents with dedication and integrity.

Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, welcomed her warmly and described her entry into Parliament as “a reinforcement of the NDC’s growing momentum.”

He assured Ghanaians that the caucus would not take its two-thirds majority for granted or abuse that right, but would meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people.

The rerun, held across 19 polling stations, was necessitated after the Electoral Commission (EC) annulled the original December 2024 parliamentary results over allegations of electoral irregularities and the submission of unauthenticated pink sheets.

Miss Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes.

NPP announces date to open nomination for flagbearer hopeful https://www.adomonline.com/npp-announces-date-to-open-nomination-for-flagbearer-hopeful/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 07:39:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558249 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its decision to open nominations for its presidential primaries no later than July 31, 2025.

This was revealed by the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen following the party’s successful National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon.

“By next week, we will open nominations for the presidential primaries, and it will be at least before July 31. It is in accordance with the constitution, which directs us to give at least six months’ notice before the election,” he stated.

He added that the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, will at the appropriate time provide full details of the nomination procedures.

Addressing concerns raised by some supporters of aspirants who felt the former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was given an unfair advantage during the conference, Nana B appealed for calm.

“The focus should be on the overall success of the conference, rather than isolated incidents or perceptions,” he stressed.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s address at the conference was justified by his status as a former Vice President and presidential candidate, and should not be misconstrued as an endorsement or signal of preference by the party.

Nana B commended the event’s organising committee, led by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu, and praised all stakeholders whose efforts ensured a successful conference.

He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful presidential primary, and called for support from all quarters to safeguard the party’s democratic processes.

The NPP presidential primaries have been scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Even before the official opening of nominations, prominent party figures including former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong have expressed interest in contesting the slot.

Dr. Bawumia is yet to formally declare his bid, but he is widely seen as the leading contender.

Ablekuma North rerun: Peter Toobu scores police 98% over handling of violence https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-peter-toobu-scores-police-98-over-handling-of-violence/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 07:33:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558243 Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has commended the Ghana Police Service for its handling of the violence that erupted during the Ablekuma North rerun on July 11, 2025.

Speaking on Adom TV’s The Big Agenda, Mr. Toobu, who is also Vice Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, said the police acted with professionalism despite the tense and chaotic scenes.

“As former capo, I will score the police 98% because tension was high, but they made sure no one died,” he said.

The former Executive Secretary to the late Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante Apeatu, explained that election-related security differs by context.

He noted that when a single constituency is in focus, political energy and tensions tend to concentrate there, especially when multiple polling stations are involved.

“The police did well in managing the Ablekuma North re-run chaos, because if not for their intelligence and hard work, it could have been worse than what happened,” he added.

The chaos occurred at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, when a group of unidentified individuals stormed the centre and attacked several people, including former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers overpowered the security presence at the time.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with the Ghana Police Service assuring the public that investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.

NPP will not make 2024 election report public – Oppong Nkrumah https://www.adomonline.com/npp-will-not-make-2024-election-report-public-oppong-nkrumah/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 06:39:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558206 Member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constitutional and Legal Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, says the party will not release its full internal report on the 2024 general elections to the public.

According to the Ofoase Ayirebi MP, the document contains sensitive material, including internal strategies and what he described as the party’s “trade secrets.”

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, the former Information Minister explained that the decision aligns with standard practice among political parties both in Ghana and globally.

“It’s not unusual. No serious political party publishes every detail of its internal assessments. That would be like giving away your game plan,” he said.

Oppong Nkrumah stressed that although a full public release is off the table, the party has made available a summary version of the report, which highlights key findings and recommendations.

“No, we will not be publishing that report to the general public. Political parties don’t do that because it also contains some trade secrets, sensitive information. So no political party does that,” he clarified.

He added that the condensed version is already informing the party’s internal review and guiding upcoming reforms.

“The summary that we believe captures it, we have put it out and we have responded to or we’ve started the process of responding to it,” he added.

Oppong Nkrumah also dismissed suggestions that the party has failed to critically assess its loss in the 2024 elections.

NPP is looking for a presidential candidate, not just a flagbearer – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu https://www.adomonline.com/npp-is-looking-for-a-presidential-candidate-not-just-a-flagbearer-kyei-mensah-bonsu/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 06:36:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558202

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against reducing its presidential primaries to a contest of mere popularity or eligibility.

Speaking in an interview on PM Express on JoyNews, the veteran legislator stressed that the stakes for both the NPP and Ghana are too high for such a superficial approach.

“People are coming out there because they satisfy the qualification and eligibility criteria as set out in the party’s constitution or even the national constitution,” he noted.

His comments came in response to a suggestion by host Evans Mensah that the party’s limited expansion of its electoral college could open the door to heavy monetisation of the primaries. The host argued that while the revised system is broader than before, it still allows well-funded aspirants to target and influence delegates.

“But you see, whoever should be the president of this country, we are not looking at just the qualification, eligibility criteria for whoever should be our president,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu added.

The former Suame MP stressed that the focus must be on leadership qualities, not just the ability to contest.

“We are not just looking for a flagbearer,” he declared. “We are looking for a president or a presidential candidate.”

He referenced a key moment in the party’s political history, recalling the caution issued by party elder Kwame Pianim in 2007, when 17 aspirants vied to succeed then-President J.A. Kufuor.

“Pianim stepped in and made a profound statement that ‘NPP, you’re not looking for a flagbearer. People seem to think that we are looking for a flagbearer.

“As for the flagbearership, any idiot could become the flagbearer.’ But we are looking beyond the flagbearer, because you are looking for a presidential candidate who ultimately will become the president of this country,” he recalled.

Ablekuma North rerun: EC surprised us – NPP https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-ec-surprised-us-npp/ Sat, 19 Jul 2025 16:47:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2557446 General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has criticised the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a rerun of the parliamentary election in parts of the Ablekuma North constituency.

Speaking at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday, Mr Kodua expressed shock at what he described as a sudden U-turn by the EC, despite the NPP’s confidence in its victory based on pink sheet evidence.

“The National Executive Committee of the party is dissatisfied with the decision by the EC to do a rerun in some 19 polling stations. We have all our scanned copies of pink sheets in the 281 polling stations, which gave us a clear win of 414 votes. Therefore, we were surprised that the EC decided to call for a rerun.”

Mr Kodua described the rerun as disturbing and warned that such actions could undermine public trust in the electoral process and the credibility of the nation’s democratic institutions.

“We felt that it was a wrong decision, and it is a bad precedent set by the EC. This is very dangerous for future politics and future elections.”

The EC’s decision to conduct a partial rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency stems from concerns raised over irregularities in the parliamentary election results in certain polling stations during the 2024 general election.

The rerun has since sparked criticism and political tension, particularly from the NPP, which maintains it had secured a legitimate victory.

Addressing the National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday, he urged party members to rekindle their commitment and work tirelessly to reclaim power in the 2028 polls.

“We cannot, we must not allow 2024 to become the year that destroys the NPP,” he said.

Acknowledging the disappointment following the outcome of the election, he emphasised the need for unity and renewed energy going forward.

“We must become a party of Ghana, talking to Ghana. Our constituency executives must master every polling station, our polling station chairpersons must know every voter, our electoral area coordinators must understand every community’s dream.

“We cannot rebrand ourselves through better slogans; we must rebrand ourselves through better results and strong character,” he added.

The NPP lost both the presidency and parliamentary elections in 2024.

The party lost the majority of its parliamentary seats to the NDC and now has 87 seats following the death of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

However, Afenyo-Markin has encouraged that the electoral loss must inspire the party to pursue strategic rebuilding.

He admonished party structures at all levels to remain active and forward-looking with the aim of winning the 2028 polls.

The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed that the police officer who slapped journalist Kwabena Banahene Agyekum during the Ablekuma North rerun has formally been charged with assault.

This was contained in a statement that provided an update on investigations into the violence that marred the election on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Minority stages walkout over Ayariga’s remarks on Akwatia seat https://www.adomonline.com/minority-stages-walkout-over-ayarigas-remarks-on-akwatia-seat/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 20:04:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556760 The Minority in Parliament on Thursday, July 17, 2025, staged a walkout in protest over statements made by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga regarding the Akwatia parliamentary seat.

The seat is yet to be formally declared vacant following the sudden death of the MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on Monday, July 7, 2025.

During proceedings, the Bawku Central MP raised concerns about the delay in officially announcing the vacancy, referencing Parliament’s visit to the late MP’s family.

“Whenever a vacancy occurs in Parliament, the Clerk of Parliament shall notify the Electoral Commission in writing within seven days after becoming aware. Mr. Speaker, if Ghanaians ask the Clerk if they are aware or not, can he say he is not aware?” he questioned.

He continued, “After being informed by the Leader of the Caucus through a statement in this House, the Clerk himself followed up at his house and met the family members of the deceased, and they confirmed to him that the deceased had passed. And this was on national television.”

Responding to the concerns, Speaker Alban Bagbin explained that Parliament must first receive official communication from the bereaved family before the Clerk can notify the Electoral Commission. “We cannot act without formal notice,” he emphasised.

Tensions heightened when Ayariga alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had already begun circulating campaign posters featuring the late MP’s widow, Mavis Kumi, suggesting her interest in contesting the upcoming by-election.

The Minority described Ayariga’s comments as insensitive and ill-timed, stating that they politicised a moment of grief. In protest, they exited the chamber.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he argued that the government delivered strongly on its mandate across key sectors but failed to effectively carry its support base along, leading to voter disengagement.

“Maybe the only thing we failed to do was to carry along our membership, a greater portion of our members, and some got quite frustrated, and therefore refused to go and vote,” he said.

He dismissed criticisms about the government’s performance and strongly defended the record of the Akufo-Addo administration in economic management, institutional development, and job creation.

“But in terms of performance, and I’m being very sincere with you, I think Nana Akufo-Addo’s government did very well,” Mr. Blay insisted.

He maintained that the administration made significant strides in building infrastructure, strengthening institutions, and improving sectors such as health, education, and security.

“In terms of handling the economy, building infrastructure, building institutions in this country, both political and security institutions, hospitals and education—I think his government did very well,” he said.

Highlighting what he sees as one of the administration’s most notable achievements, Mr. Blay added, “In terms of even providing employment in the history of this country, that government did extremely well.”

Lawyer petitions Mahama to probe Ablekuma North rerun violence https://www.adomonline.com/lawyer-petitions-mahama-to-probe-ablekuma-north-rerun-violence/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 09:36:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556421 Private legal practitioner, Lawrence Kwesi Botchway Jnr. has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to establish an independent Commission of Enquiry into the violent incidents that marred the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.

In an eight-page petition dated Tuesday, July 15, and copied to the Council of State and the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Botchway cited Article 278(1)(a) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the President to set up a commission to investigate matters of public interest.

“Article 278 (1) of the 1992 Constitution provides that the constitutional mandate of the President… can be invoked at the pleasure of the President or upon the advice of the Council of State or at the request of Parliament,” the petition noted.

Mr Botchway argued that the rerun, ordered after unresolved results from the 2024 general elections, was characterised by what he described as “a coordinated campaign of violence” involving intimidation, physical assaults, and serious breaches of human rights.

Graphic scenes of violence

The petition recounts several alleged incidents backed by video evidence. Among them was the brutal assault of former Member of Parliament and Minister of State, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was allegedly attacked by over 20 unidentified men at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church Polling Station.

“Despite having accreditation to monitor the elections on behalf of the NPP candidate, Madam Hawa Koomson was attacked and stomped by unidentified macho men,” the petition stated.

Journalists were not spared either. Joy News reporter Sally Martey was reportedly slapped and shoved on live television by a masked individual, while Amansan TV’s Vida Wiafe was

pepper-sprayed by security officers, causing her to collapse. Other victims included GHOne’s Kwabena Agyekum Banahene and NPP Deputy National Organiser Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, both of whom were physically assaulted.

“This petition borders on the fundamental human rights of citizens, injustice, abuse of power, and unfair treatment,” Mr Botchway stressed. “These matters are of considerable significance and weight to satisfy the pleasure of the President.”

Drawing from precedent

The petition also referenced the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019, which led to the formation of a Commission of Enquiry. Mr Botchway believes the Ablekuma North incident warrants similar treatment.

“It is unfortunate that, over three decades of practicing democracy, Ghana cannot hold violence-free elections… The petitioner deems it necessary to bring to the notice of the President activities of violence which… warrant the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry,” the petition stated.

Demands and concerns

The legal practitioner called for a probe into human rights violations, particularly against journalists and election observers.

He accused elements within the Ghana Police Service of overreach and brutality, citing the alleged assaults on media professionals as examples of unprofessional conduct.

He further questioned the National Election Security Taskforce’s failure to deploy adequately on the day of the rerun, stating that their absence contributed to the chaos.

Mr. Botchway also called for scrutiny of the Interior Minister’s role, suggesting a possible lack of oversight or dereliction of duty in addressing security lapses during the election.

Among the key reliefs sought, Mr. Botchway demanded compensation for victims and an independent inquiry to determine accountability.

He stressed that the issue transcends individual grievances and affects the broader principles of justice, democracy, and rule of law.

“The petitioner herein brings this matter before the President for his consideration, based on the President’s legal mandate to establish a commission of inquiry to enquire into the matters espoused,” he concluded.

The petition is expected to generate public interest amid growing calls for electoral reforms and accountability in Ghana’s democratic process.

A sitting MP’s husband was part of my attackers – Hawa Koomson alleges [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/a-sitting-mps-husband-was-part-of-my-attackers-hawa-koomson-alleges-audio/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 20:28:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556256 Former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has alleged that the husband of her successor, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, was among those who physically assaulted her during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

According to her, she recognised two or three individuals involved in the attack, including the husband of a sitting MP, although she could not confirm his name.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mrs. Koomson said some of the attackers were from Kasoa and described the incident as a targeted attempt on her life.

“All I saw was that they were advancing towards me. Someone was holding a cutlass, declaring that they would finish me today. There was this other short guy with an orange sleeve wearing a jacket and camouflage shorts, and he usually walks with the MP’s husband,” she alleged.

She recalled that former Okaikoi South MP, Darkoa Newman, who was with her at the time, was visibly shaken and urged her to flee, but there was no escape route.

The altercation, which occurred at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling centre in Odorkor on Friday, July 11, 2025, temporarily disrupted voting and triggered an increased security presence.

The former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture maintained that she had no prior knowledge of any planned violence and would have avoided the event had she received any warning.

“There were more than 30 guys coming towards me, and I couldn’t have faced them as a woman,” she said.

The violence reportedly began when a group of unidentified individuals overpowered police officers stationed at the polling centre.

Viral videos captured the moment Hawa Koomson used pepper spray on her attackers—an act she insists was in self-defense. One individual is seen stepping on her groin after she fell to the ground, moments before police rescued her.

Addressing criticism of her actions, she said:
“I couldn’t have watched on and done nothing for them to kill me because one of them had a gun, and I’m grateful to God it wasn’t fired. I could have died.”

She further revealed a history of political attacks against her.
“Exactly a year and a month ago, my son was stabbed at a registration centre unprovoked,” she said.

Mrs. Koomson has called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing, although no arrests have been made yet.

NDC approached me to contest Mfantseman, Ayawaso West Wuogon seats – Prof. Gyampo https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-approached-me-to-contest-mfantseman-ayawaso-west-wuogon-seats-prof-gyampo/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 15:23:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555638 The Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has revealed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) approached him on two occasions to contest as its parliamentary candidate.

According to him, the first approach came ahead of the 2016 general elections for his hometown constituency, Mfantseman, and the second was in the lead-up to the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Prof. Gyampo disclosed this during an appearance on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, where he addressed public concerns about his recent appointment under the Mahama-led administration.

“President Mahama first invited me in the lead-up to the 2016 election to contest in my hometown, Saltpond, Mfantseman. But I didn’t feel the time was right. In Ayawaso West Wuogon, after Boakye Agyarko’s death, the call came again. I was then a visiting scholar at the University of Bristol. But I insisted on continuing to teach,” he recalled.

However, he noted that when the opportunity to serve arose a third time, he accepted it with a sense of national duty.

“I thought that if they believe I possess qualities that can contribute to nation-building and development, then I should avail myself,” he said.

Akwatia by-election: Brouhaha over posters of Ernest Kumi’s wife settled https://www.adomonline.com/akwatia-by-election-brouhaha-over-posters-of-ernest-kumis-wife-settled/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 10:19:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555414 Former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Denkyembour in the Eastern Region, Seth Birikorang, has dismissed reports suggesting that the wife of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, intends to contest in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

This follows the circulation of viral posters featuring the widow, Mavis Kumi, announcing her purported intent to contest in a potential by-election.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Birikorang, a close friend of the family, refuted the reports as false.

He clarified that the widow’s actual name is Mavis Asiamah, not Mavis Kumi as stated on the poster, and described the poster as fake.

According to him, Mavis has no interest in politics, has not expressed any intention to succeed her husband, and has not authorised anyone to promote her as a candidate.

“It was around 2:00 p.m. on Monday when someone drew my attention to the flier, and the family is really disturbed about the development.

“I want to state categorically that she has no plans to succeed her husband. Under no circumstances will she consider that, so I will urge all those driving that campaign to stop. The family is troubled and yet to come to terms with his sudden death, so it is a difficult moment, and we don’t need this,” he stated.

May be an image of 1 person and text that says 'S:DEVE.OPIENTIRFREEDON DEVELOPIENT FREEDON OUR HOPE AKWATIA CONSTITUENCY MRS. MAVIS KUMI New Covenant New Hope Covenant'

Mr. Birikorang added that the matter had previously been raised with the family, but those involved were strongly advised to abandon the idea.

“The family was very upset and warned them to boycott the decision. So they have come to a decision that she will not contest. I’m aware there are discussions ongoing regarding Ernest’s successor, but Mavis is not part of it,” he noted.

He explained that Mavis now plans to devote her time to managing the businesses she built with her husband and focusing on raising their children.

The late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief illness.

Kufuor, Akufo-Addo to address NPP delegates conference virtually https://www.adomonline.com/kufuor-akufo-addo-to-address-npp-delegates-conference-virtually/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 09:21:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555398

Former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will address the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2025 National Delegates Conference virtually, party sources have confirmed.

The two former leaders are unable to attend the high-stakes conference scheduled for Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra, due to circumstances described as “beyond their control.”

Saturday’s conference marks the first major national gathering of the NPP since its defeat in the December 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Delegates from all 16 regions are expected to converge for discussions aimed at repositioning the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Immediate past President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has been out of the country for some time, is unable to return for the conference. He was already outside the jurisdiction when the NPP’s National Council officially fixed the July 19 date, and party insiders now confirm he will not be able to make the trip back in time for the event.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who recently participated in the launch of the party’s ideological training centre, the Patriotic Institute, is also unavailable to attend the conference in person.

Sources close to the party’s top leadership confirmed that both statesmen will deliver their messages via video link during the event.

The NPP National Council convened a meeting on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the conference and was officially informed about the virtual addresses by the two former leaders.

This year’s conference is expected to deliberate on several important constitutional reforms, including proposals from the Mike Oquaye Committee and an outstanding amendment from the party’s 2019 Delegates Conference in Kumasi.

The theme for the conference, “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” reflects the party’s intention to reconnect with its grassroots, reassert its founding principles, and restore confidence among disillusioned supporters.

Akua Afriyie apologises to NPP over Ablekuma North rerun [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/akua-afriyie-apologises-to-npp-over-ablekuma-north-rerun-video/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 08:24:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555357 The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Afriyie, has rendered an unqualified apology to the party’s leadership after defying a directive not to participate in the parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Although the party has yet to issue a public statement on the matter, Madam Afriyie disclosed her apology during an engagement with journalists on Monday.

She explained that her decision to apologise followed concerns raised at an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Alisa Hotel.

“NEC’s decision was right and apt because I won, but there was a deliberate attempt to subvert the will of the people,” she said.

“I believe that but for the chaos that erupted, I would have emerged victorious. I would apologise to my party for defying the directive,” she added.

Madam Afriyie stressed that her actions were not born out of disrespect but a desire to uphold core party values.

“They wanted to show a certain principle because our acts are based on those principles: accountability, probity, and freedom. Despite the outcome of this rerun, I know that justice will prevail and we will win back the seat,” she declared.

The NPP officially boycotted the rerun after the Accra High Court on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, dismissed an injunction application to halt the election. The party had described the rerun as illegal and in contempt of court.

However, less than 24 hours before the vote, Akua Afriyie broke ranks and announced her decision to contest, stating her desire to defend her December 7, 2024, electoral victory.

At the close of polls, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, was declared the winner with 34,090 votes, while Akua Afriyie secured 33,881 votes.

Ablekuma North violence: Interior Minister calls Hawa Koomson after assault https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-violence-interior-minister-calls-hawa-koomson-after-assault/ Mon, 14 Jul 2025 14:34:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555118 The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has expressed sympathy to former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, following her assault during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, July 13, Mr. Muntaka disclosed that he had personally called Madam Koomson after the incident.

“I called the Honourable Hawa Koomson to empathise with her. I asked what happened, and she explained. I told her I have instructed the IGP to investigate the matter thoroughly. My plea to her is that when they invite you, go and make all your facts available so it will help them to ascertain what truly happened,” he said.

The Minister condemned the violence that disrupted voting in the constituency and vowed that all perpetrators would be brought to justice. He also encouraged Hawa Koomson to fully cooperate with the ongoing police investigations.

“I have spoken to the IGP firmly on all the happenings at Ablekuma North. The videos have been forwarded to him, and we’ve instructed him to act swiftly and bring the perpetrators to book.

“We are not going to condone wrongdoing, whether it involves people from within our party or from outside,” he added.

Mr. Muntaka further praised the current leadership for taking a decisive and public stance against electoral violence.

“The violence is unacceptable and a scar on all our consciences. As a people who have practised democracy for over three decades, it’s disheartening that we still cannot have violence-free elections.

“Almost all of us at the top have condemned it. In the past, you would not get that. The Vice President has spoken out. The President is out of the country, but the Vice President is leading us, and she has condemned it,” he stated.

The incident, which took place on Friday, July 11, at the St. Peter’s Polling Station, resulted in chaos and injuries to several individuals, including New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and former minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Monday, July 14, Ms Muslim urged political parties to reassess their mobilisation strategies, particularly where young people are placed in harm’s way.

“We have all agreed that political parties have mobilised vigilante groups in the past. They have also used individuals to protect the ballot. Sometimes, those activities lead to violence,” she noted.

Drawing on her personal experience as a mother, she issued a heartfelt plea:
“And I, as a mother of two boys and two girls, would never encourage my son to go and put himself in a line of risk that could lead to his death. I won’t do that as a person.”

She called on political parties to dismantle structures that endanger the lives of their members.
“I think political parties ought not to organise around vehicles that would threaten the lives of their own members,” she added.

Ms Muslim’s remarks come amid heightened national concern over the resurgence of political vigilante groups and their involvement in Ghana’s electoral process.

Is widowhood a campaign message? – Ewurabena Aubynn asks Akua Afriyie https://www.adomonline.com/is-widowhood-a-campaign-message-ewurabena-aubynn-asks-akua-afriyie/ Mon, 14 Jul 2025 11:55:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555000 Newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, has taken a swipe at her main opponent, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, for using her widowhood status as a campaign message during the recent parliamentary rerun.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem after her narrow victory on Friday, July 11, 2025, Ms. Aubynn argued that her rival, a former MP, should have focused on her past achievements rather than appealing to emotion.

“Is being a widow a campaign message? I am also an orphan with nobody except God. As a former MP, she could have campaigned on her track record, but because she didn’t do anything for constituents while in power, she had no message,” she said.

Ewurabena expressed gratitude to God and acknowledged that President John Mahama’s recent performance played a crucial role in swinging votes in her favour.

She secured 34,090 votes against Nana Akua Afriyie’s 33,881 — a tight contest decided by a rerun in 19 polling stations following a prolonged dispute over the December 2024 results.

Her victory increases the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary tally to 185 seats.

Meanwhile, four independent MPs — Kwame Asare Obeng (A Plus) of Gomoa Central, Worlasi Kpeli of Afram Plains North, Nandaya Yaw Stanley of Wulensi, and Ohene Kwame Frimpong of Asante Akim North — have declared support for the NDC, giving the party a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

She maintains that the former Minister was unjustly targeted and did not intend to provoke any confrontation.

In an interview with Channel One TV, Akosua Manu recounted the events as described by Madam Koomson. She stated that the former Minister was at the polling station in a peaceful manner when she was suddenly attacked. According to Koomson, she only used pepper spray in self-defence after perceiving a threat from one of the assailants, who appeared to be wielding a weapon.

“Her narration gave me goosebumps,” Manu said. “She mentioned that at one polling station, as she was entering, she was told she could only go in with one person. At the time, police personnel were next to her.

“She and her team were making the rounds. While she observed proceedings, her personal security team stayed back a bit. Suddenly, she heard people saying ‘where is she, where is she,’ and then she looked up and saw a group of young men approaching her.

“One of them she recognised. They literally charged at her. She said she saw something that looked like a weapon, and that’s when she quickly reached for her pepper spray. She said if it weren’t for the spray slowing them down, the outcome would have been worse than anticipated. Mind you, she didn’t go there to cause confusion,” Manu explained.

Mrs. Manu condemned the assault as an act of political aggression and called on all political actors and stakeholders to denounce violence—especially during democratic processes that are meant to promote peace and representation.

Former Western North Minister advocates for grassroots inclusion in NPP delegates system https://www.adomonline.com/former-western-north-minister-advocates-for-grassroots-inclusion-in-npp-delegates-system/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 22:19:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554676 Former Western North Regional Minister Richard Obeng, popularly known as Joojo Rocky Obeng, is advocating for the inclusion of grassroots in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegate voting system, which he believes is crucial in strengthening the democratic foundation.

Mr. Obeng is calling on the party’s leadership to include past polling station executives and electoral area coordinators in the delegate list.

The call comes as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for its extraordinary delegates conference at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on July 19, to consider constitutional amendments.

According to him, these individuals form the bedrock of the party and have demonstrated unwavering loyalty over the years.

Including them, he says, will help broaden the party’s Electoral College and ensure a more inclusive and fair decision-making process.

“All executives vote at polling stations. Former polling station executives should not be left out. They are the foundation of our party. If we truly want to broaden the base and build a stronger party, they must be included,” he stressed.

Mr. Obeng emphasized that fairness and transparency should guide every step the party takes, especially as it looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.

He cautioned against using undemocratic tactics to favour one candidate over another and urged the leadership to be respectful and unbiased toward all hopefuls seeking positions within the party.

“We should not find a bad way to elect someone. What matters is fairness, unity, and respect for everyone who wants to serve,” he added.

He echoed similar sentiments shared by former Assin Central MP and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, calling for unity within the party.

Mr. Obeng stated that internal cohesion and respect for loyal party members—especially those at the grassroots level—are essential if the NPP hopes to reclaim power in the next general elections.

Furthermore, he commended the National Council for its decision to include all former national officers since 1992 in the upcoming vote to elect the party’s next flag bearer in January.

He described the move as a step in the right direction and urged that the same spirit of inclusiveness be extended to all levels of the party’s structure.

“As a political party in opposition, what we need most is patriotism. We need to bring everyone on board, especially our polling station executives, both past and present. They have worked hard and deserve a voice in deciding the future of our party,” he concluded.

Mr. Obeng’s call comes at a crucial time as the party gears up for internal reforms. His appeal underscores the growing demand for greater participation and fairness in the NPP’s internal electoral processes.

Peace Council speaks on Ablekuma North election violence https://www.adomonline.com/peace-council-speaks-on-ablekuma-north-election-violence/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 21:37:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554659 The National Peace Council (NPC) has condemned the violence that marred the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11.

In a statement, the Council expressed “grave concern” over reports of physical attacks on journalists and former Awutu Senya East MP Hawa Koomson.

According to the NPC, such acts violate individual rights and threaten the peace and stability of the country.

“The Council strongly condemns these violent acts, including the assault at the Methodist Polling Station in Odorkor, and urges all voters, security personnel, and observers to remain calm, exercise restraint, and allow the Electoral Commission and security agencies to carry out their duties peacefully,” the statement read in parts.

The Council also commended the Ghana Police Service for the swift interdiction of a policeman who slapped a journalist, Kwabena Banahene Agyekum, in the line of duty.

Mr. Agyekum sustained injuries to his right eye and face, requiring medical attention at the Cocoa Clinic in Kaneshie.

Emphasising the need for a unified front against political violence, they urged cooperation between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prevent such occurrences.

The Electoral Commission(EC) ordered fresh voting in 19 polling stations within the constituency due to irregularities and disputes during the original December 2024 election.

The election was intended to conclude the collation of the 2024 parliamentary election results, with 261 polling stations already collated, but was marked by heightened tensions.

Ahead of the election, the NPP parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, was leading with 32,512 votes, holding a slim margin of 48 votes over the NDC candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, who has garnered 32,464 votes.

After the keen contest on Friday, Ewurabena Aubynn managed to poll 34,090 votes, while Nana Akua Afriyie obtained 33,881 votes.

Speaking on JoyNews Newfile on Saturday, Prof. Aning said the increasing use of violence as a tool in electoral contests is threatening the very foundation of the nation’s democratic credentials.

“Our democracy is now on a knife’s edge, given the increasing franchising of violence and the use of violence as a tool,” he stated. “So we are going nowhere.”

He criticised what he described as a cycle of empty promises and unimplemented recommendations, suggesting that authorities are merely addressing symptoms rather than tackling the root causes of political disorder.

“Promises will be made, statements will be issued, but we will never be prepared,” he added. “Much like the fight against galamsey, they are only tinkering with what we see.”

Some disturbances involving unidentified vigilante groups led to the temporary suspension of voting in certain areas on Friday, July 12, prompting police intervention to restore order.

Eyewitnesses reported that a group of unidentified men arrived at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station in a pickup truck and launched an attack, assaulting several individuals, including former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, who was allegedly kicked to the ground before officers stepped in.

Two journalists, one from JoyNews and another from EIB Network, were also assaulted while covering the election.

Citing the assaults on former Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson and journalists, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful said it was “deeply regrettable” and a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy.

Dr. Adutwum, in a statement, emphasised that such incidents weaken the foundations of Ghana’s democratic system and urged immediate steps to avert reoccurrence.

“This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past.

“As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritise the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests,” he stated.

He warned that Ghana’s hard-won democratic gains must not be reversed by what he described as acts of political aggression and intolerance.

Reflecting on the recent election outcome, Dr. Adutwum said it should serve as a reminder to all political stakeholders that power must be earned through ballots, not intimidation.

“The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores,” he said.

He urged the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the incidents and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence,” he stressed.

Dr. Adutwum concluded with a call for national unity and a renewed commitment to peace, law, and democratic principles.

‎PRESS STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEMENT BY DR. YAW OSEI ADUTWUM, NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY FLAGBEARER HOPEFUL, ON THE VIOLENCE THAT MARRED ABLEKUMA NORTH RE-RUN

I wish to express, in the strongest possible terms, my condemnation of the acts of violence that marred the just-concluded Ablekuma North re-run

The brutal assault on the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson and a journalist from the EIB Network is not only deeply regrettable but also a threat to our democratic values.

This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past. As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritize the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests.

The collective efforts we have made over the years to build a strong and united Ghana should not be undone by acts of political intolerance, aggression, and violence.

The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores. Our deepened contemporary political credentials as a nation should teach us to come to terms with the fact that it is high time we kept our past political differences at bay and adopted values that will unite us as a people.

I urge all Ghanaians to remember that we are, first and foremost, one people. Political competition must never come at the expense of human dignity and life.

Our desire to see our respective parties succeed must not translate into violence or injury against fellow citizens.

Accordingly, I call on the Hon. Minister for the Interior to, as a matter of urgency, initiate a thorough investigation into the incidents of violence and ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.

Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence.

Let us work together to preserve the peace, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the democratic values that form the bedrock of our Republic.

Mustapha Gbande denies alleged role in Ablekuma North rerun violence https://www.adomonline.com/mustapha-gbande-denies-alleged-role-in-ablekuma-north-rerun-violence/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 14:56:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554610 Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has denied allegations made by Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

According to him, the Member of Parliament accused him of inciting or directing acts of violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun election held on Friday, 11th July, 2025.

In a statement issued on Saturday, July 12, Mr. Gbande expressed shock at the Minority Leader’s claims, describing them as “false, reckless, and politically motivated.”

He insisted he had no involvement in or prior knowledge of any violent incidents at the 19 polling stations where the rerun took place.

“I categorically deny any involvement in, or prior knowledge of, any of the incidents he referred to,” Gbande said.

“Such conduct from a trained lawyer and senior member of the legislature reflects a disregard for truth and the ethical standards expected of public office holders.”

Mr. Gbande confirmed his presence in the constituency as part of routine electoral monitoring but clarified that he was not at the scene when the altercation involving former MP and Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson broke out.

“When I was called upon, I rushed to the scene to assist with efforts to de-escalate the situation. Contrary to the false narrative, I asked my driver to take Madam Hawa Koomson to the hospital,” he explained.

He condemned all unlawful acts and called for a full and impartial investigation by the Ghana Police Service to ensure that the perpetrators of any wrongdoing are brought to justice.

Mr. Gbande also urged the Electoral Commission and relevant authorities to enhance measures that safeguard electoral integrity and protect the dignity of political participants during such exercises.

In response to Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s accusations, Mr Gbande disclosed that the matter has been referred to his legal team for advice.

He warned that disinformation and character assassination pose serious threats to democratic discourse.

“It is essential that we preserve a political culture rooted in truth, accountability, and the rule of law,” he noted.

Minority blasts gov’t appointees for ‘celebrating violence’ in Ablekuma North https://www.adomonline.com/minority-blasts-govt-appointees-for-celebrating-violence-in-ablekuma-north/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 11:42:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554586 The Minority in Parliament has criticised senior officials in President John Mahama’s administration for allegedly endorsing and celebrating violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

In a statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the group pointed to public remarks by Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw and Malik Basintale as “grotesque” and “fundamentally incompatible with democratic governance”.

Dr Bissiw, who is the National Women’s Organiser of the NDC and CEO of the Minerals Development Fund, was singled out for her comment that “violence begets violence.”

The Minority said this statement “suggested that the brutal attacks were somehow justified.”

Even more controversial was a Facebook post by Malik Basintale, Acting CEO of the Youth Employment Agency and Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC.

According to the statement, Basintale allegedly praised the man who assaulted Hawa Koomson, calling him “the Flying Python” and joking he would lead a fictional “5K Airforce.”

“This grotesque celebration of violence against a former Member of Parliament represents a new low in Ghana’s political discourse,” the Minority declared.

Calling on President Mahama to act, the Minority stated: “The President cannot remain silent while members of his government celebrate violence against opposition figures.

“His response will define his legacy and determine whether Ghana continues on the path of democratic governance or slides toward the normalisation of political violence.”

Photos from the Ablekuma North re-run https://www.adomonline.com/photos-from-the-ablekuma-north-re-run/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 11:34:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554477 The Electoral Commission (EC) conducted a rerun on Friday, July 11, across 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency.

This followed disruptions during the December 2024 elections that hindered the final results’ collation.

Over 6,000 eligible voters were anticipated to participate in this electoral contest between Nana Akua Afriyie, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Ewurabena Aubynn, the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

But for attacks and violence recorded in some polling stations, the election was generally peaceful.

The voting process at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station was temporarily suspended due to a disturbance.

An unidentified individuals arrived in a pickup vehicle and forcibly entered the premises, despite the presence of law enforcement officers.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants overpowered the security detail and initiated an assault on several political figures, including former Member of Parliament and ex-Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, later visited the Odorkor Methodist polling station to assess reports of chaos and disturbances in the area.

Accompanied by his entourage, he toured several polling stations within the constituency to monitor the security situation and to help ensure a smooth electoral process.

Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, also visited the constituency and urged calm while condemning the chaos that broke out

At the end of the polls, the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn emerged victorious, securing 34,090 votes in the closely contested election.

Her main contender, the NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie polled 33,881 votes.

This victory marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time in 28 years since the NDC has won the seat which is a stronghold of the NPP.

NPP’s Amfo Sefa vows to ‘arm up’ for Akwatia https://www.adomonline.com/npps-amfo-sefa-vows-to-arm-up-for-akwatia/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 09:30:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554559
Dennis Amfo Sefa, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for Tema West in the 2024 general election, has openly called for armed readiness in the by-election expected in Akwatia in response to the violence that marked the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.

Describing the incident as a “dangerous precedent”, Amfo Sefa’s statements have raised alarms about the potential for increased political violence.

In an interview with Channel One News on Friday, July 11, during the polls, Amfo Sefa voiced his outrage, accusing the NDC of fostering a climate of violence to sway electoral outcomes.

“This is a sad and dangerous precedent that is being set by the NDC. Over the years, whenever there is a by-election, we in the NPP conduct ourselves democratically,” he stated, calling for an end to the cycle of aggression.

When pressed further about the violent events that marred the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, Amfo Sefa’s frustration was palpable.

“Is that to say we should continue? If that is what you are saying, then it means we should prepare for Akwatia. We have to arm ourselves and get ready. And we will repeat it there,” he warned, a statement that has drawn serious concern from political analysts regarding its potential to incite further violence.

On Friday, July 11, chaos erupted at a polling station located at St. Peter’s Methodist Church, where a group of unidentified armed men stormed the centre, disrupting the voting process.

This turmoil led to physical assaults on prominent NPP figures, including Nana Akua Afriyie, the party’s parliamentary candidate, and Hawa Koomson, the former Minister of Fisheries.

Such acts of aggression have reignited fears surrounding the security of electoral environments in the country, where political tensions have historically escalated during elections.

The call to arms reflects an alarming trend in Ghanaian politics, particularly as reports from the Ghana Police Service indicate a 30% increase in politically motivated violence compared to previous election cycles.

This surge poses a significant threat not only to the integrity of the electoral process but also to the safety of citizens who wish to exercise their democratic rights.

Minority condemns violence, police inaction in Ablekuma North rerun https://www.adomonline.com/minority-condemns-violence-police-inaction-in-ablekuma-north-rerun/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 21:03:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554446 The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed deep concern over what it describes as widespread violence and disorder during the parliamentary rerun elections held across 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

In a statement issued by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Caucus accused members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating and participating in acts of violence that disrupted the electoral process.

The statement specifically named NDC Deputy National Communications Officer Malik Basintale and Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande as individuals allegedly seen in viral videos inciting unrest.

“Their actions, and the justifications being offered by other NDC leaders, are a direct attack on our democratic process,” the statement said. “These acts are depriving the people of Ablekuma North of their constitutional right to representation.”

Among the incidents cited were reported assaults on New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, and former MP Darkoa Newman at the St. Peter’s Polling Station.

A journalist from the EIB Network, Banahene Agyekum, was also allegedly slapped by a police officer while reporting from North Odorkor 2.

The Caucus criticised the Ghana Police Service for what it described as inaction during the chaos, despite prior warnings of potential disruptions. It called for thorough investigations into the conduct of security personnel on the ground.

A notable incident occurred at the Awoshie DVLA Polling Station, where individuals dressed as security personnel were detained after failing to produce proper identification.

Tensions also escalated at the Asiedu Gyedu Memorial School 1 Polling Station, where confrontations between NDC supporters and police reportedly disrupted voting.

Additionally, the Deputy National Organiser of the NPP, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, was said to have been assaulted.

The Minority Caucus further criticised the presence of the Ministers for the Interior and Defence at polling stations, describing it as a “public gimmick” intended to mask what they termed a failure to take decisive action.

On a broader note, the Caucus challenged the Electoral Commission’s decision to conduct the rerun across 19 polling stations, arguing that the original dispute concerned only three. They suggested the expanded scope of the rerun raised concerns about possible political interference.

Calling for urgent intervention, the Minority urged the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission to protect all electoral stakeholders and safeguard the integrity of the process.

The statement also appealed to the international community, civil society organisations, and the media to monitor the situation closely.

“The continued disenfranchisement of Ablekuma North residents, who have been without parliamentary representation since January 7, 2025, is unacceptable,” the statement concluded, reaffirming the Minority’s commitment to upholding justice, the rule of law, and electoral integrity.

According to official results declared by the Returning Officer, Joseph Nii Kwartey Okpoti, Ewurabena Aubynn polled 34,090 votes, beating her main contender Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 33,881 votes.

This gives Aubynn a winning margin of just 209 votes.

Out of a total of 68,328 ballots cast, 67,917 were valid, while 411 were rejected.

With this outcome, the NDC flips the Ablekuma North seat, one of the constituencies where parliamentary elections were rerun following a court order.

Aubynn’s win adds to the opposition party’s tally in Parliament and is seen as a significant political gain in the Greater Accra Region.

With the win, the NDC has secured 184 seats, constituting two-third majority in parliament.

The rerun was marred by incidents of violence, including reported assaults on journalists and party officials, prompting calls for investigations and accountability.

Nonetheless, the Electoral Commission has confirmed the results from all 281 polling stations.

Ablekuma North rerun: A win was expected because we worked hard – Ewurabena Aubynn https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-a-win-was-expected-because-we-worked-hard-ewurabena-aubynn/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 19:49:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554455 The newly-elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, says she feels proud and fulfilled after being declared the winner in the parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate secured a narrow victory over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie in what turned out to be a fiercely contested race.

Madam Aubynn polled 34,090 votes, edging out her closest contender, who garnered 33,881 votes.

Speaking to the media shortly after the Electoral Commission announced the official results, Madam Aubynn said her victory came as no surprise.

“A win was expected because we have worked so hard,” she stated confidently.

She stated that her team ran a grassroots-focused campaign, engaging with constituents and highlighting practical solutions to the problems facing the area.

Now that she has been elected, Ewurabena stated that her focus will shift to tackling the challenges that residents of Ablekuma North face daily.

“There are basic things that we are deprived of, so we will work at it and see how best we can improve the constituency,” she said.

She expressed heartfelt appreciation to the people of Ablekuma North for turning out in their numbers to support her, as well as to the leadership of the NDC for backing her candidacy.

“I also want to thank the party leadership and my mother, Valarir Sawyerr, the regional executives, national executives, and everybody who supported me,” she said.

Describing her win as divinely ordained, she added, “A win is a win. What God wants is what He has done.”

The newly-elected MP reaffirmed her commitment to serve her constituents diligently, noting that the outcome of the rerun reflects a strong desire for transformation.

“What the people of Ablekuma North wanted was change, and now that change has come, we will work with it,” she affirmed.

Ablekuma North rerun: “We neither sleep nor slumber,” – NPP PC https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-we-neither-sleep-nor-slumber-npp-pc/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 19:11:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554443 The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma North rerun, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, has reaffirmed her commitment to vigilance and accountability as polls officially closed at exactly 5:00pm today.

Speaking to journalists just moments after the end of voting, Akua Afriyie stated, “We neither sleep nor slumber,” a remark she made a number of fans followed her and sang her praise.

Her comments come in the wake of a highly charged political atmosphere surrounding the rerun, which was ordered by the Electoral Commission after irregularities were cited in a few polling stations during the original December 7, 2024, general election.

Despite an official boycott declared by the NPP leadership, Akua Afriyie and the NPP insisted on participating in the rerun, maintaining that she had a commanding lead from the original results and was merely returning to solidify her position.

She has described the rerun as unnecessary but was confident that “the outcome of the election will be my victory.”

The rerun, held across 19 polling stations in the constituency, attracted attention from political observers and voters alike, with security and electoral officials ensuring a smooth voting process throughout the day. Akua Afriyie’s presence and active engagement have reinforced her individual stance, separate from the party’s national posture.

Vote counting has commenced, and the Electoral Commission is expected to declare results in the coming hours. As tensions remain high, Afriyie’s bold declaration signals her readiness to defend what she believes to be a rightful mandate.

The outcome of this rerun is expected to carry implications not just for the constituency but also for the broader discussion on electoral fairness and internal party cohesion.

In a statement, Madam Koomson confirmed that she was physically assaulted by individuals she described as “NDC machomen” while peacefully observing proceedings at one of the polling centres.

She further disclosed that her personal mobile phone was forcibly taken from her during the incident.

As a result, she warned the public to treat any calls, messages, social media posts, or broadcasts originating from her number after the incident as unauthorized.

Hawa Koomson urged the public to disregard any communication purportedly coming from her until she regains full control of her digital platforms.

The assault occurred at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, where tensions erupted following the arrival of unidentified men, reportedly in a pickup truck and on motorbikes.

Their presence caused panic and chaos among voters and electoral officials.

Eyewitnesses claimed that Madam Koomson attempted to use pepper spray to ward off the attackers but was overwhelmed and subsequently assaulted.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Nukpenu described some of the incidents as regrettable but raised doubts about the accuracy and origin of certain videos circulating online.

“The attacks must be condemned, but I am happy that there were no gunshots or deaths. It must be on record that the thugs are not from NDC stock. They could be from the NPP because, in politics, when you disappoint people, they can turn against you. But some of these incidents are being exaggerated and could have even been generated through AI,” he stated.

Reacting specifically to the attack on former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, Mr. Nukpenu said he was shocked by the news.

According to him, he met and interacted with Madam Koomson, Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku, and Political Aide to Dr. Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, at the Methodist Church polling station where the attack reportedly occurred.

Expressing his sympathy, Mr. Nukpenu added that the party intends to visit Madam Koomson to commiserate with her and offer an apology.

He also expressed optimism that the police will investigate the incidents thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Ablekuma North rerun has drawn national attention following months of political wrangling over the results of the 2024 parliamentary election.

The Electoral Commission (EC) ordered a rerun in 19 polling stations after disputes over missing endorsements and irregularities.

Exposed: Face of thug who attacked JOYNEWS journalist at Ablekuma North rerun https://www.adomonline.com/exposed-face-of-thug-who-attacked-joynews-journalist-at-ablekuma-north-rerun/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 16:43:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554359

This is the face of the man who assaulted JOYNEWS digital journalist Sally Martey during violent scenes at the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025.

The man, wearing a cloth mask that partially concealed his face, deliberately turned toward Sally as she walked near the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station. He approached her from behind and launched a vicious and unprovoked attack, slapping and shoving her forcefully.

“I did nothing. He just came at me and attacked me,” a shaken Sally recounted after the incident.

Sally Martey, known for her extensive on-the-ground coverage of major protests and political events in Accra, was on assignment to report on the rerun when the assault occurred. The attacker is believed to be part of a group of well-coordinated thugs who stormed the polling station, disrupting the voting process.

The attack on Sally is just one of several disturbing incidents recorded during Friday’s exercise. Earlier, a GHOne TV journalist was also assaulted—this time by a police officer. The officer involved has since been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau.

In a separate incident that has since gone viral, former Fisheries Minister and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was physically assaulted and pushed to the ground by a group of unidentified men during the chaos.

The election was marred by chaos.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and other media advocacy groups have strongly condemned the attacks, calling them cowardly and a direct threat to press freedom and democracy.

With the rerun marred by violent disruptions, media watchdogs and election observers have warned of a dangerous trend of rising hostility toward journalists in Ghana’s democratic space.

JOYNEWS condemns attack on its journalist

JOYNEWS, where Sally works, has condemned the attack on her. Here is the full text of a statement it issued in Accra on Friday.

“JOYNEWS strongly condemns the assault of one of our journalists by an unknown thug during the Ablekuma North constituency rerun. The journalist, who was on the ground to carry out her legitimate duties as a member of the press, was attacked without provocation while covering the electoral process.

This attack is an affront not just to JOYNEWS, but to press freedom and democracy in Ghana. No journalist should be intimidated, harassed, or assaulted for doing their job, especially during such a critical civic exercise as an election.

We call on the Ghana Police Service to swiftly investigate this incident and bring the perpetrator to justice. We also urge the Electoral Commission and all political stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of media professionals at all polling centres.

JOYNEWS remains committed to upholding the public’s right to timely, accurate, and impartial information. We will not be deterred by acts of intimidation.”

I don’t feel sorry one bit for Hawa Koomson – Hannah Bissiw [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/i-dont-feel-sorry-one-bit-for-hawa-koomson-hannah-bissiw-audio/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 16:22:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554334 National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Louisa Hannah Bissiw, says she feels no sympathy for former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, who was assaulted during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

In an interview with Accra-based Citi News, Dr. Bissiw condemned the violence that disrupted the election at 19 polling stations but made it clear she cannot empathize with the former Fisheries Minister.

“I condemn violence, but please don’t ask me to feel sorry for her because I’ll be lying before you and before God. I don’t feel sorry one bit,” she stated.

Dr. Bissiw alleged that she was once a victim of an attack allegedly orchestrated by Madam Koomson and questioned whether she deserved such treatment.

“Ask her if I deserved the men she brought to come and attack me. Ask her about the people shot and killed at Kasoa and the organiser that died. Did those people deserve it?”

The outspoken NDC executive recalled previous instances of electoral violence and questioned whether Hawa Koomson had shown remorse for her alleged role in them.

“Ask her if the people she attacked deserved it. When I, a parliamentary candidate, was assaulted, did I deserve that? Ask her about the slaps I received when I was pulled out of my moving vehicle and beaten. Honourable Amartey, the former DCE for Teshie, and his wife were beaten in Ayawaso just for trying to rescue me.”

She concluded that if Hawa Koomson believed she deserved those past attacks, “then she deserves better.”

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, held across 19 polling stations, was marred by chaos, arrests, and allegations of impersonation and vote-buying.

Eyewitnesses say a group of men arrived in a pickup and on several motorbikes, storming the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station and triggering panic among voters and officials.

Despite increased security, violence broke out. Hawa Koomson was seen on video being assaulted, and reports suggest she attempted to use pepper spray on the crowd but was overpowered.

Sam George tells Bawumia to ‘shut up’ over Ablekuma North violence https://www.adomonline.com/sam-george-tells-bawumia-to-shut-up-over-ablekuma-north-violence/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 16:01:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554330 Ningo-Prampram MP and Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has lashed out at NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over his comments on the violence that disrupted the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

In a strongly worded social media post on Friday, Sam George stated:
“Someone should tell Bawumia to shut up. What did he say about Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2019?”

His remarks were in response to Dr. Bawumia’s earlier condemnation of the chaos that erupted at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, where a group of unidentified men violently disrupted voting.

The incident led to the assault of political figures including former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, and injuries to other NPP members and a journalist.

Dr. Bawumia, who is leading the NPP into the December 2024 presidential election, warned that Ghana’s democratic stability is at risk if political violence becomes normalized.
“This will be a recipe for disaster if each political party raises its own army,” he said.

He further urged President John Mahama to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
“I call on the President to take action to bring the perpetrators to book.”
“We will not forget what has happened. This is not the democracy we want to see.”

However, Sam George questioned the former Vice President’s moral authority to speak against electoral violence, citing Bawumia’s silence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence in 2019, when security operatives assaulted opposition supporters—an incident widely condemned by civil society and international observers.

The back-and-forth reflects rising political tension following Thursday’s chaos, which has drawn condemnation from civil society groups, election observers, and the general public.

Many are calling on the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service to investigate and prevent a repeat of such incidents.

With the December 2024 elections fast approaching, analysts warn that political accountability and security professionalism will be critical to maintaining public confidence in Ghana’s democratic processes.

In an interview with JoyNews at the Presidency, Deputy Minister for Government Communications, Shamima Muslim praised the Ghana Police Service for its prompt response, including the withdrawal and interdiction of the officer involved in the assault on a GHOne journalist.

She is calling for calm and urging the police to take firm action against anyone who attempts to incite violence or disrupt the electoral process.

Tensions escalated dramatically at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, part of the Ablekuma North constituency.

The electoral rerun was violently disrupted when a group of unidentified “macho men” stormed the premises in coordinated fashion, arriving in a pickup truck accompanied by multiple motorbikes, forcing panic among voters, electoral personnel and security forces.

Eye‐witnesses report that the assailants overpowered the security detail and launched an assault on several political figures, including former MP and ex‐Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Disturbing video footage shows her being forced to the ground and reportedly stomped in the chest and groin area before officers intervened.

Other victims included NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female party agent, both reportedly injured amid the turmoil.

Later in the morning, a JoyNews journalist was slapped and pushed by a thug.

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned the violent attacks recorded in parts of the Ablekuma North constituency.

The Electoral Commission had earlier promised a peaceful and transparent process following months of legal disputes surrounding the December 2024 parliamentary results in the constituency, which left the seat vacant.

However, the rerun took a different turn as pockets of violence were reported.

In a media interview, Dr. Bawumia described the development as disturbing, stating that it betrays democratic principles.

He appealed to President John Mahama to call to order the thugs believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and to take decisive action.

“This is not the democracy that we want to see in Ghana. Our supporters are being attacked by thugs in the presence of the police, who have been unable to protect them,” he said.

Two journalists, Kwabena Banahene Agyekum of the EIB Network and Sally of JoyNews, were assaulted while covering the polls.

Former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was also reportedly attacked by an irate group at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station.

Other victims included NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female party agent, both reportedly injured amid the turmoil.

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has dismissed allegations that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, is engaging in vote-buying during the ongoing rerun elections.

Speaking to Citi News, Madam Ocloo justified what critics describe as “vote-buying,” insisting that providing transportation money—commonly known as “T&T”—to voters is a longstanding practice and not a form of inducement.

“People have to come and vote, so if such people come, you have to give them the T&T to go and vote. I do not think that is vote buying,” she said. “If you think that is vote buying, you can also go and buy their vote. It’s as simple as that.”

The Shai Osudoku MP explained that the support is targeted at known party loyalists who have already committed to voting for the NDC.

“If someone is loyal to you, why wouldn’t such a person vote for you with or without money? I do not think giving the person transportation is going to affect the integrity,” she noted.

According to Madam Ocloo, she shared her contact details on radio and received several calls from voters—some from as far as Tarkwa and Kumasi—seeking help to travel to their polling stations.

“I told them that when they come, they should give me a call for their T&T. We are not giving out money. I am saying that we are supporting them with their T&T,” she emphasized.

She further questioned the logic behind the allegations: “When someone calls you, saying that he or she doesn’t have money for transportation, and I tell them to hail a car and I will pay, is that vote buying?”

“If the person is from the NPP, I do not think such a person will call me for obvious reasons. It means such a person is already aligned with us. And equally, in the NPP, people call them for money for T&T,” she added.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun is underway in 19 polling stations following legal disputes over the December 2024 election results. Both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are optimistic about securing the seat.

IGP Yohuno visits Ablekuma North [Photos+Video] https://www.adomonline.com/igp-yohuno-visits-ablekuma-north-video/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 14:38:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554286 Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, on Friday led a high-powered team to the Ablekuma North constituency to assess the security situation amid the ongoing parliamentary election rerun.

The IGP’s visit follows violent incidents recorded at some of the 19 polling stations involved in the rerun, including attacks on media personnel and a prominent political figure.

Two journalists — Kwabena Banahene Agyekum of the EIB Network and Sally of JoyNews — were assaulted while covering the polls. Former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was also reportedly attacked by an irate group at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station.

The Electoral Commission had promised a peaceful and transparent process following months of legal disputes surrounding the December 2024 parliamentary results in the constituency, which left the seat vacant.

Despite the isolated incidents, electoral officials reported that voting continued smoothly in most polling centers, with calm but steady turnout observed.

The rerun is expected to determine the final occupant of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.

Attack on media completely shameful – Miracles Aboagye https://www.adomonline.com/attack-on-media-completely-shameful-miracles-aboagye/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 13:34:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554264

An aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly condemned the assault of journalists and what he described as heavy-handed police presence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun.

In a social media post, Dennis Miracles Aboagye described the attacks on media personnel as “completely shameful,” stressing that “journalism is not a crime and should not be met with brutality.”

His comments follow reports that two journalists—one from Joy News and another from GHOne TV—were assaulted while covering events at polling centres. The GHOne reporter was allegedly slapped, while the Joy News journalist was manhandled while on duty.

Miracles also expressed concern over the presence of individuals he referred to as “hoodlums in police uniforms,” insisting that such persons should be removed from polling stations to preserve public confidence in the process.

He added that the intimidating posture of some police officers was discouraging eligible voters from participating in the rerun.

Calling for calm, he reiterated the NPP’s commitment to a peaceful, fair, and transparent electoral process.
