Democracy in Ghana now a commodity, driven by vote buying and poverty – Prof Alhassan https://www.adomonline.com/democracy-in-ghana-now-a-commodity-driven-by-vote-buying-and-poverty-prof-alhassan/ Sat, 28 Mar 2026 19:19:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645428 The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Eliasu Alhassan, has warned that democracy in Ghana is increasingly being reduced to a commodity, with political power influenced by money rather than the will of the people.

He made the remarks during JoyNews Impact Makers Foundation’s programme dubbed “Democracy is not for sale” held in Tamale on Friday, March 27.

The initiative forms part of efforts to spark national conversations on vote buying and electoral reforms.

Speaking at the event, Prof Alhassan expressed concern about the growing influence of money in Ghana’s political process.

“The monetisation of our politics nowadays is becoming unbearable,” he said, adding that the trend has distorted the core principles of democracy.

He explained that while democracy is founded on participation, the rule of law and equality, the current situation reflects a worrying shift.

“Democracy has to do with the people actively participating in the governance of their country. There must be rule of law… equality before the law… and the protection of fundamental human rights,” he noted.

According to him, although democracy is not meant to be bought, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

“It isn’t for sale in principle, but in reality, monetisation has made democracy for sale,” he said.

Prof Alhassan pointed to vote buying as a key factor, arguing that politicians often take advantage of poverty to influence voters’ choices.

“Politicians have actually hidden under a certain cover, and that is poverty, by forcing people, taking the people’s decisions,” he explained.

He said when voters accept money in exchange for votes, they effectively lose their right to make independent decisions.

“When you give money and the person votes for you, indirectly you have taken the decision that the person should have taken with his conscience,” he added.

The sociology professor further noted that the situation is more pronounced in rural communities, where economic hardship makes voters more vulnerable.

“Because of the poverty situation in Ghana, especially in the rural communities, politicians have actually relied on that,” he said.

He described the trend as a dangerous shift where political power is determined by financial strength rather than merit or policies.

“The whole system has been monetised or commodified where politicians have to buy people’s decisions to become either MPs or the president,” he said.

Prof Alhassan also highlighted the role of inequality and education in shaping voter behaviour. He said people with higher levels of education are less likely to sell their votes.

“There are a lot of people who will never allow themselves to be bought… especially those who have the education,” he said.

However, he said that illiteracy and lack of awareness continue to make some voters easy targets.

“Some people even voluntarily sell their votes simply because they are ignorant about what is happening in their country,” he added.

He warned that such practices undermine the very essence of democracy and weaken public trust in the electoral process.

“If a politician comes with money to buy your vote, don’t forget that the person is buying your decision to make the government,” he said.

Prof Alhassan urged political leaders to focus on policies and engagement rather than inducements, stressing that democracy must be protected.

“Politicians are supposed to tell the people what they can bring on board… not to influence them with money or gifts,” he said.

“Frankly speaking, democracy in Ghana has now become a commodity where politicians sell, and the voters also buy with their decisions,” he added.

Democracy in Ghana now a commodity, driven by voting and poverty - Prof Alhassan nonadult
Politicians capitalise on poverty to monetise democracy – Prof. Alhassan https://www.adomonline.com/politicians-capitalise-on-poverty-to-monetise-democracy-prof-alhassan/ Sat, 28 Mar 2026 15:36:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645365 Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University for Development Studies, Prof. Eliasu Alhassan, says politicians are exploiting poverty and illiteracy to monetise Ghana’s democracy, warning that vote buying continues to undermine the will of the people.

Speaking on JoyNews’ “Democracy Is Not for Sale” forum Prof Alhassan said poverty and lack of education have created conditions that make some voters susceptible to inducement during elections.

He noted that while some voters, particularly the educated, resist such practices, others willingly exchange their votes for money due to limited awareness.

“Politicians have capitalised on poverty and illiteracy. Some people even voluntarily sell their votes simply because they do not understand what is at stake,” he said.

According to him, accepting money in exchange for votes effectively hands over citizens’ decision-making power.

“If a politician gives you money to buy your vote, they are buying your decision to choose a government. Once you take the money and vote for them, you have sold your right to decide,” he stressed.

Prof Alhassan described the practice as harmful to democracy and called for a shift in how political engagement is conducted.

“Politicians must engage the people, explain what they can offer, and involve citizens in governance instead of influencing them with money,” he added.

“Democracy Is Not For Sale” forum held in Tamale [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/democracy-is-not-for-sale-forum-held-in-tamale-photos/ Sat, 28 Mar 2026 13:17:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645177 The JoyNews’ “Democracy Is Not For Sale” forum held at the GNAT Hall in Tamale brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on the growing influence of money in Ghanaian politics.

The event, which attracted members from various political parties, persons living with disabilities, opinion leaders, and traditional authorities, provided a platform for open discussions on the escalating cost of political participation, vote buying, and campaign financing.

Speaking as a panelist, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Eliasu Alhassan, warned that Ghana’s democracy was increasingly being reduced to a commodity.

He noted that political power was gradually being shaped by financial strength rather than the genuine will of the people, a situation he described as dangerous for democratic growth and sustainability.

According to him, the monetisation of politics risks sidelining competent but less financially endowed individuals, thereby weakening the country’s democratic structures.

Also contributing to the discussion, the Northern Regional Operational Commander, Richard Lantei Odartey, raised concerns over what he described as the rising tide of political activism undermining the rule of law.

He cautioned that the trend was gradually eroding respect for legal processes and institutions, posing a serious threat to justice and accountability in the country.

Mr. Odartey further indicated that some individuals ventured into politics primarily to shield their business interests, especially where such enterprises were linked to criminal activities.

He stressed that such motivations not only compromised governance but also deepened corruption within the political system.

The forum formed part of JoyNews’ broader initiative aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and safeguarding Ghana’s democratic principles against the corrosive influence of money.

Akufo-Addo to lead ECOWAS election observers for Benin’s high-stakes presidential transition https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-to-lead-ecowas-election-observers-for-benins-high-stakes-presidential-transition/ Sat, 28 Mar 2026 10:30:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645287 The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially appointed former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to head its Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) for the upcoming presidential elections in the Republic of Benin.

The mission, scheduled for deployment from April 7 to 15, 2026, underscores the regional bloc’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and peaceful transition in one of West Africa’s key democracies.

The appointment was confirmed by the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Commission in a statement released on Friday, 27th March 2026.

The April 12 election is set to be a defining moment for Benin.

The incumbent, President Patrice Talon, who has led the nation since 2016, is barred by the constitution from seeking a third term. His decision to step down after two mandates has been hailed by regional analysts as a vital signal for democratic stability in a sub-region recently rocked by constitutional overstays and military interventions.

Under Benin’s two-round electoral system, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the total votes to win outright in the first round.

President Akufo-Addo’s leadership of the mission is governed by the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. This legal framework empowers the observers to monitor the technical conduct of the polls, the neutrality of state institutions, and the overall environment of the election to ensure it meets international standards.

According to a social media update from ECOWAS, the mission’s presence aims to serve as a “catalyst for promoting democracy, good governance, and regional stability.”

2028 election: I’ll be the David to bring restoration to Ghana — Janet Nabla https://www.adomonline.com/2028-election-ill-be-the-david-to-bring-restoration-to-ghana-janet-nabla/ Fri, 27 Mar 2026 15:41:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645115 The 2024 flagbearer of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, has announced her intention to contest the 2028 general elections, positioning herself as a transformative leader determined to “restore” Ghana.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nabla said her political journey is rooted in faith and a firm belief that the country is ready for a new direction beyond the two dominant parties.

“PNP is here by the grace of God. We are watching events closely and trusting that God knows best and where He wants to take Ghanaians,” she stated.

Nabla criticised both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that despite changes in leadership, governance patterns have remained the same.

“Ghanaians saw the failings of the NPP and voted them out in 2024. The NDC is now repeating the same mistakes. People have seen it clearly,” she said.

Looking ahead to 2028, Nabla expressed confidence in a political shift that she believes will favour a third force led by a woman.

“Going into the 2028 elections, there will be a change, led by a third political party with a female candidate—and that woman will be Janet Nabla,” she declared.

She added that Ghana’s democratic history has been dominated by male leadership, often with outcomes that fail to meet citizens’ needs.

“Since the start of our democracy, we have voted for men and seen the results. It is time for Ghanaians to vote for a woman,” she argued.

Highlighting the qualities women bring to leadership, Nabla said: “When a woman is in the family, she ensures that basic necessities like food, jobs, and housing are provided. That is what is important for leadership.”

She also stressed the need for integrity and strength in leadership. “I cannot be a pushover. If we are voting for a woman, it must be someone with integrity, God-fearing, and confident to work. By these standards, Janet Nabla Asana is the best candidate in the country,” she asserted.

Reaffirming her ambition, Nabla said: “I will contest on the ticket of the PNP, and I am hopeful I will win. For the first time, I will lead my party into an election to bring liberation to the people of Ghana.”

Framing her mission in biblical terms, she concluded with a bold pledge: “I will be the David of this country to bring restoration to my people.”

You are talking too much lately – Mussa Dankwah told https://www.adomonline.com/you-are-talking-too-much-lately-mussa-dankwah-told/ Thu, 26 Mar 2026 13:01:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2644434 The Acting Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibil, has weighed in on pollster Mussa Dankwah’s work, urging him to maintain credibility while reducing his public commentary.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on March 26, during a discussion on election polling, Mr Jibil acknowledged Mr Dankwah’s growing reputation, noting that his work has so far demonstrated credibility. However, he cautioned that the frequency of his public remarks, particularly on social media, could undermine the impact of his research.

“I think so far he has shown some credibility in his work. I will urge him to expand it. However, one thing I have a challenge with is that he is talking too much of late,” he said.

Mr Jibil added that while explaining research findings is important, excessive commentary risks diluting the value of the data, warning that constant public engagement could shift focus away from the substance of the polling.

“I am sure you follow his Facebook posts and those things. At times, I believe he should stay back and allow the work to speak for him,” he noted.

Responding to Mr Dankwah’s recent survey, Mr Jibil also highlighted historical voting patterns, arguing that the NDC has consistently performed strongly across regions. According to him, although the party often wins more regions in elections, overall outcomes are sometimes determined by numerical advantages in key areas.

Mahdi Jibil Acting NDC Director of Elections

His comments come after findings by Global InfoAnalytics suggested that support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is declining, while the NDC is gaining ground among voters, based on early results from an ongoing March 2026 tracking poll.

Mr Jibil further alleged that figures produced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in elections are often questionable, claiming that irregularities have played a role in shaping some outcomes. He maintained that election managers within the NDC have long held concerns about the integrity of certain electoral results, insisting that such issues continue to inform the party’s analysis of polling data.

Baba Jamal to be sworn in as Ayawaso East MP today https://www.adomonline.com/baba-jamal-to-be-sworn-in-as-ayawaso-east-mp-today/ Tue, 10 Mar 2026 07:15:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2638761 The Member of Parliament-elect for the Ayawaso East Constituency, Baba Jamal, is set to be sworn into office on Tuesday, March 10.

The ceremony will take place in Parliament and will be administered by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

Mr. Jamal secured the seat during the by-election conducted on Tuesday, March 3, winning the contest on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The election saw several candidates from different political parties as well as an independent candidate competing for the seat.

In a Facebook post on Monday, March 9, Mr. Jamal thanked voters in the constituency for giving him the mandate to represent them in Parliament.

“Indeed, Allah’s ways are perfect. I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to serve, and I look forward to working together with you to build a brighter and greater future for the Ayawaso East Constituency,” he stated.

According to the official results released after the by-election, Mr. Jamal polled 10,884 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who obtained 4,009 votes.

Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda garnered 1,885 votes. Meanwhile, Ibrahim Idrissu received 43 votes, while Kanor David secured 104 votes.

Ayawaso East by-election was free and fair, but low voter turnout worrying – Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-by-election-was-free-and-fair-but-low-voter-turnout-worrying-asah-asante/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 08:36:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637228 A political scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah Asante, has described the March 3 Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election as largely successful, commending its peaceful conduct while raising concerns about the low turnout at the polls.

Dr Kwame Asah Asante, speaking on the AM Show, said the exercise demonstrated Ghana’s democratic maturity — but warned that the country must do more to engage citizens during by-elections.

“We saw a free and fair election — an election devoid of violence and any aberration that undermines free and fair elections,” he said.

“Security was also tight, and the voters themselves compelled themselves to go through the process to its logical end.”

The Ayawaso East constituency went to the polls to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant by the death of four-term MP Naser Toure Mahama, who passed away on January 4, 2026, following a period of illness at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

NDC candidate Alhaji Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed won the seat decisively, securing 10,884 votes — representing 63 per cent of valid ballots cast — against his closest rival, NPP’s Baba Ali Yussif, who polled 4,009 votes.

Out of 49,966 registered voters in the constituency, only 17,048 ballots were cast across 113 polling stations, with 16,928 deemed valid and 120 rejected.

The figures led to what Dr Asante described as a worrying trend of low participation in by-elections across Ghana.

“That tells us that as a state we need to up our game in that direction and make sure that we get people to show interest in by-elections — particularly people in affected constituencies,” he said.

Despite the turnout concerns, the political scientist noted that the overall conduct of the election was orderly. He pointed to the swift acceptance of results by all candidates as a positive sign.

NPP’s Baba Ali Yussif conceded defeat and congratulated Baba Jamal, while suggesting the party could capture the seat in future contests.

The winner, for his part, pledged to focus on development, declaring that “the resetting of Ayawaso East starts now.”

Dr Asante said the peaceful outcome and the gracious acceptance of results by both winners and losers signalled a mature democratic culture. “It tells you that we have come to the end of the show,” he remarked.

The Ayawaso East seat has remained a stronghold of the NDC since 1992, with the party winning every parliamentary election held in the constituency.

Tuesday’s result continued that trend, with the NDC retaining the seat.

Baba Jamal, a lawyer and former MP for Akwatia, previously served as a Deputy Minister during the first term of President John Dramani Mahama and was recently recalled as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria — over allegations of voter inducement during the party’s constituency primaries, claims that were later found to be unfounded.

The by-election was the second of the 9th Parliament of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

I’m not motivated by material things; I’m here to serve – Baba Jamal https://www.adomonline.com/im-not-motivated-by-material-things-im-here-to-serve-baba-jamal/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 08:22:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637218 The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) newly elected MP in the Ayawaso East by-election, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has said his decision to seek office is driven by a commitment to service rather than personal gain.

After casting his ballot at the Alhaji Iddrisu House 2 polling station on Tuesday, March 3, he told journalists that his political journey is guided by a dedication to the people, not possessions.

“I am not motivated by materialistic things. I am motivated by human service. And that is why I am here to serve my people,” he stated.

Drawing on his experience as a former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Baba Jamal expressed confidence in his ability to replicate — and even improve upon — his past performance if elected in Ayawaso East.

“I’ve done it before in Akwatia, and I know I will do it better in East Ayawaso,” he said, describing the voting process as fair so far.

He urged residents to rally behind what he described as a renewed vision for the constituency, adding that the ultimate outcome rests beyond human control.

“As I said, God makes kings. So the percentage will be determined by Allah. We have prayed for a high percentage, but it is in the hands of Allah, and Allah will determine it,” he remarked.

At the close of polls on March 3, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed of the NDC emerged victorious, securing 10,884 votes to win the contest convincingly.

His closest challenger, Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda garnered 1,885 votes, David Kanor, also an independent candidate, secured 104 votes, while Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) obtained 43 votes.

Ayawaso East: My mother’s promise fulfilled – Baba Jamal says after victory https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-my-mothers-promise-fulfilled-baba-jamal-says-after-victory/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 07:29:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637197 Newly elected Ayawaso East Member of Parliament, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has dedicated his victory to his 93-year-old mother, Mimi.

Following his decisive win on Tuesday, March 3, the former Akwatia MP revealed that his mother had promised to ensure his return to Parliament — a promise that has now been fulfilled.

“I want to thank the Almighty Allah for giving us this victory. Let me state that I dedicate this victory to my 93-year-old mother, Mimi, for promising to support me and ensuring that one day I would go back to Parliament,” he declared.

He noted that for years, she carried the conviction that her son would return to the House. Tuesday’s result, he said, was more than a political comeback; it was the fulfilment of a promise.

“Today, her vision and wish have come true. And I thank Allah for her life, and I dedicate this victory to her.”

Though she stayed out of the political spotlight, Mimi’s influence, her son suggested, shaped the resilience behind his campaign.

Baba Jamal was quick to remind supporters that the win belonged to the constituency as much as to his family.

“I want to state that this victory is not for me, Baba Jamal, alone; it’s for the good people of Ayawaso East. I want to thank all of them for having confidence in me and electing me as their parliamentary candidate-elect,” he added.

The former High Commissioner to Nigeria was declared the winner in the highly anticipated election after polling 10,884 votes, defeating the NPP’s Yussif Ali Baba, who obtained 4,009 votes.

‘The reset starts now’ – Ayawaso East MP-elect Baba Jamal declares https://www.adomonline.com/the-reset-starts-now-ayawaso-east-mp-elect-baba-jamal-declares/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 06:39:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637165 Newly elected Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, the NDC’s Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has declared that work to “reset” the constituency will begin immediately following his emphatic victory in the by-election.

Baba Jamal polled 10,884 votes to defeat the NPP’s Yussif Ali Baba, who secured 4,009 votes.

Shortly after being officially declared winner by the Electoral Commission, he described the mandate as a collective achievement rather than a personal triumph.

“This victory is not for me, Baba Jamal, alone; it’s for the good people of Ayawaso East,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to constituents for entrusting him with the seat.

“I want to thank all of them for having confidence in me and electing me as their Member of Parliament.”

The new MP dedicated the victory to his 93-year-old mother, Mimi, recalling her long-standing encouragement.

“Let me state that I dedicate this victory to my 93-year-old mother, Mimi, for promising to support me and ensuring that one day I would go back to Parliament. Today, her vision and wish have come true.”

He also acknowledged the support of his immediate family.

“I want to thank my wife here, my family and my children for the spirit of endurance they have shown since I made it my vision to return to Parliament.”

Baba Jamal further extended appreciation to the leadership of the National Democratic Congress, including the national chairman and general secretary, as well as the Greater Accra Regional and Ayawaso East Constituency executives. He also recognised supporters from Akwatia “who came in their numbers to support me for this project.”

He reserved special mention for President John Mahama.

“Let me also give a special thanks to President John Mahama, once again, for finding me worthy to go and work in Nigeria.”

Reflecting on his recent experience abroad, he said it had prepared him for the task ahead.

“Those few months that I stayed in Nigeria have added to my experience, which I am bringing to Parliament to serve this country better.”

Central to his remarks was a firm pledge to transform the constituency.

“I want to assure the people of Ayawaso East that the resetting of Ayawaso East starts now.

“We are going to Parliament. We are coming to reset the whole constituency and ensure that what Ayawaso East deserves comes to pass.”

He also commended the media for their role throughout the campaign period.

“I want to thank the press for your support.

“For all these weeks that you have been chasing and working with us — I understand that sometimes you followed us late into the night.”

Looking ahead, he signalled his intention to build a constructive relationship with journalists.

“I believe we are going to form a partnership with the press as we reset Ayawaso East, so we can work together.

“Please correct us when we are wrong, but do so in a good and professional manner.”

In an interview with Adom News, Gbande noted that the voting process has been peaceful, with law enforcement present to maintain order.

“Everybody knows and understands that the Nima election is a family affair. So the exercise has been peaceful,” he said.

He downplayed the presence of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that the opposition was only there to “escort us” and did not play a significant role in the voting.

“The NPP only came to escort us,” Gbande remarked, adding that the police have been ensuring calm and order throughout the exercise.

The deputy secretary also encouraged voter participation, emphasising that by-elections often see lower turnout but remain important for strengthening democracy.

“By-elections usually have low turnout. But at the end of the day, the NDC candidate will be declared 80%,” he said, projecting a commanding win for his party.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, he highlighted what he described as clear signs of a change in voter sentiment, expressing optimism that the outcome would favour his party.

“Let’s wait till 5 p.m.; the Ayawaso East seat will change hands, Insha Allah. It is obvious we are going to win this election,” he said.

Baba Ali also urged constituents to cast their ballots calmly and in large numbers, appealing for strong voter turnout in his favour.

Reacting to a recent Global InfoAnalytics survey projecting a 75 percent victory for the NDC’s Baba Jamal, he questioned the reliability of the poll, citing events on the ground that suggest a different trajectory.

“Not long ago, you conducted a poll in Ayawaso here, and what happened? This is Ayawaso East. Here, the data doesn’t work in that manner. What is happening currently on the ground will prove that the data is clearly wrong. So let’s wait and see,” he stated.

He also described the voting process so far as calm and well-organised.

Speaking to Accra-based Channel One News, Mr. Nimako pointed out that the same firm had inaccurately predicted results during the NDC’s internal primaries.

“He’s the same person who predicted Baba Jamal would lose in the NDC primary. But he won. Who are the commissioners of his polls? For me, it’s neither here nor there. I can assure you that our candidate, Baba Ali, has been sold to the constituents; he’s known as the home boy and liked by all. Ask Baba Jamal his opinion about Mussa Dankwah, and we will take it from there,” he said.

The poll, conducted by Global InfoAnalytics between February 28 and March 1, sampled 972 voters in the constituency.

It projected that NDC candidate Baba Jamal could secure 75 per cent of the vote, while NPP’s Baba Ali Yussif is expected to obtain 21 per cent. Independent candidate Umaru Sanda Muhammed is projected at 3 per cent, with Ibrahim Iddrisu and David each below one per cent.

Despite the survey, Mr. Nimako insisted that the NPP’s campaign, driven by extensive grassroots engagement, would ultimately decide the outcome.

“We, the NPP, have engaged the constituents, we have sold our candidate to them, and we know that they are deciding in favour of him. He’s going to be the next MP for Ayawaso East. I can assure you that our candidate will come out victorious,” he added.

Ayawaso East by-election: NPP will suffer a defeat they’ll never forget – Tanko Computer https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-by-election-npp-will-suffer-a-defeat-theyll-never-forget-tanko-computer/ Tue, 03 Mar 2026 12:10:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636986 The Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has projected a decisive win for his party in the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election.

Speaking to Adom News while touring selected polling stations on Tuesday, Tanko Computer said feedback from the areas he had monitored suggested strong backing for the NDC candidate.

“We will hand the NPP a defeat they will never forget,” he declared, expressing confidence that the outcome would favour his party despite what he described as generally low voter turnout.

According to him, early observations indicate that the NDC maintains a comfortable edge. He also dismissed concerns about the independent candidate, Umaru Sanda Mohammed, a former NDC member, insisting that his participation poses no significant challenge to the party’s prospects.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Baba Ali Yussif, attributed the slow turnout to the Ramadan period.

He noted that many Muslim voters may choose to cast their ballots later in the day and expressed strong optimism about his chances at the polls.

Both camps remain upbeat as voting continues across the constituency, with party officials closely monitoring developments at various polling stations.

Koku Anyidoho applauds voting arrangements for Ayawaso East by-election https://www.adomonline.com/koku-anyidoho-applauds-voting-arrangements-for-ayawaso-east-by-election/ Tue, 03 Mar 2026 09:45:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636901 Certified international elections observer Koku Anyidoho has expressed satisfaction with the Electoral Commission’s (EC) conduct of the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, saying the poll management body is performing above expectations on election day.

Anyidoho, speaking from a polling station in the constituency on Tuesday, March 3, praised the EC, which he referred to by its technical designation as the Election Management Body (EMB), for deploying materials and personnel on time and setting up polling stations in line with internationally accepted standards.

“I’m happy,” he said. “The EC, on top of its job — when I got here, the material, the personnel already deployed; they are set up in good time.”

The seasoned observer pointed to two key benchmarks that election monitors look out for during polls. The first is the placement of the voting booth, which he said must guarantee voter privacy.

The second is the positioning of the ballot box — which, by international standards, must be placed in an open, visible area so that voters cast their ballots in full public view.

“I think that these basic things are standing tall as far as the EMB is concerned,” Anyidoho said.

He also commended the strong media turnout at the polling station, saying it was a positive development for accurate and credible reportage. He warned against commentary from those not physically present at polling centres, describing such contributions as potential sources of disinformation and misinformation.

The by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting MP, Naser Toure Mahama, in January at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

A total of 49,966 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 113 polling stations in the constituency.

The main contenders are the NDC’s Baba Jamal, the NPP’s Yussif Baba Ali, and independent candidate Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda, among others.

A poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics between February 28 and March 1 projected Baba Jamal to secure 75% of the vote, with Baba Ali trailing at 21%.

Voting runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Security has been beefed up, with the Ghana Police Service deploying 80 officers to each polling station to guarantee a peaceful exercise.

Fred Tetteh, the Commission’s Director of Research, assured the public that preparations are complete, covering both materials and staffing across the constituency.

“In terms of preparation, the Commission is ready. Everything is set for the poll. We are talking about logistics, personnel; yes, we are ready. The logistics and all arrangements have been made regarding the packing of materials, ballot boxes, and voting screens for the 113 polling stations where the elections will be held,” Mr. Tetteh said on Accra-based Citi FM.

The Commission disclosed that 49,966 voters are on the electoral roll in Ayawaso East, with polls scheduled to open at 7 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

Five aspirants, including former Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, are contesting the race.

Although all aspirants remain confident of victory, a poll by Global InfoAnalytics projects a 75 per cent win for Baba Jamal, who is also a former MP for Akwatia, ahead of his closest contender, Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Independent aspirant Umaru Sanda Muhammed, who recently severed ties with the NDC, is projected to secure about 3 per cent of the vote.

The survey further suggests that the remaining candidates, Ibrahim Iddrisu and David, are each expected to garner less than one per cent of the total ballots cast, highlighting what appears to be a largely two-horse race between the NDC and NPP.

Adenta Kumi pledges 54% votes for Bawumia in 2028 election https://www.adomonline.com/adenta-kumi-pledges-54-votes-for-bawumia-in-2028-election/ Tue, 03 Mar 2026 06:41:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636805 National Youth Organiser hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, has pledged to help secure a decisive 54 per cent victory for the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the 2028 general election.

Outlining what he described as a “Kyemp3 policy,” Kumi said the youth wing would partner Dr. Bawumia to deliver victory at the polls and would, in turn, expect meaningful inclusion in government should the party win power.

Adenta Kumi made the pledge while officially declaring his bid for the National Youth Organiser position on Monday, March 2, 2026.

He stressed that young people must not only campaign but also be given opportunities to serve, learn, and grow within government.

Drawing inspiration from biblical principles, Kumi emphasized that young leaders should be guided and given practical exposure to governance to prepare them for future responsibilities.

“The Bible says, ‘Train up a child in the way he should go, so that when he grows, he will not depart from it.’ We will appeal to our elders to give us opportunities to learn on the job,” he said.

Kumi indicated that his team would advocate for the appointment of competent young party members to ensure inclusive governance.

He also proposed the creation of a monitoring desk to track the payment of contractors and eliminate middlemen who benefit unfairly from public contracts.

According to him, empowering the youth with entrepreneurial support, structured engagement platforms, and transparent systems would rebuild trust and energize the party’s base.

Describing the 2028 contest as a defining moment, he assured supporters that the youth wing would pursue what he called “relentless and fearless” mobilisation across the country.

“The people of Ghana deserve a revived party,” he said, urging members nationwide to unite behind the mission to deliver victory for Dr. Bawumia and secure a stronger youth presence in governance.

Announcing his bid, Kumi emphasized that the future of the party depends on reconnecting with young people and restoring their confidence ahead of the 2028 general election.

He noted that the outcome of the next election will largely hinge on how effectively the party mobilises and empowers the youth.

Acknowledging communication gaps that affected the party’s performance in the 2024 election—describing it as “a bit dull”—Kumi pledged to introduce innovative strategies to strengthen engagement and narrative control.

Central to his vision is the establishment of a robust youth secretariat anchored on research, job creation, and opportunity tracking.

He outlined plans to drive entrepreneurship among young members and launch a nationwide Youth Corps programme aimed at skills development and structured political participation.

Kumi also proposed the development of a digital youth mobilisation app to promote the party’s programmes and achievements while coordinating grassroots activism across the country.

In addition, he promised logistical support for regional and constituency youth organisers, including the provision of vehicles or motorbikes to enhance operational efficiency.

Describing his ambition as “a mission to revive the party,” Kumi called on young patriots across the country to rally behind what he termed a renewal agenda.

He urged party faithful and supporters to join him in rebuilding confidence in the NPP and positioning it strongly for 2028.

The NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, announced the development during the party’s final rally in the constituency on Sunday, March 1.

He noted that the expulsion takes immediate effect, meaning Mr. Mohammed will no longer enjoy the rights and privileges associated with party membership.

“It will take him about eight years before he can contest any position in the party. Even if, after the by-election, he decides to return, he cannot contest immediately and would have to wait until 2032. I am really pained for him,” he said.

Going Biblical, the General Mosquito, as he is popularly known, added:

“The Bible teaches that the message of salvation can seem foolish to those who have gone astray. Such a person is already on a path that leads to destruction and will ignore guidance. Only afterwards will they regret and say, ‘If only I had known.’ With that in mind, Umaru Sanda remains our brother, but he is no longer part of the party.”

The NDC had earlier, in a statement on February 17, explained that Mr. Umar Sanda forfeited his membership because his decision violated the party’s constitution and its collective choice to field a duly endorsed candidate.

The party has also prohibited him from using the NDC’s name, logo, colours, symbols, or any other intellectual property in his campaign or related political activities.

Your hypocritical stand was hurtful – Baba Jamal’s Campaign Manager tells Majority MPs https://www.adomonline.com/your-hypocritical-stand-was-hurtful-baba-jamals-campaign-manager-tells-majority-mps/ Mon, 02 Mar 2026 07:04:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636492 Baba Alhaji Nuhu Khalid, Campaign Manager for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, has described as “hurtful” the stance taken by some members of the Majority Caucus over allegations of vote buying.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One News, Mr. Khalid expressed disappointment at calls for the cancellation of the February 7 parliamentary primary and the disqualification of aspirants accused of inducement.

He emphasized that Baba Jamal shares a longstanding and cordial relationship with colleagues in Parliament and should not have been subjected to what he considers unfair criticism.

“Baba Jamal’s relationship with the NDC in Parliament is cordial. They have a very cordial relationship. Baba Jamal didn’t deserve what they did to him because some of them came to Parliament through by-elections, and Baba Jamal has been a pillar in any by-election that the NDC organised,” he stated.

The comments follow a public call by the NDC Majority Caucus for the immediate annulment of the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary amid claims of vote buying.

A committee set up by the party to investigate the allegations subsequently cleared Baba Jamal of any wrongdoing, effectively affirming his candidature for the by-election scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

Mr. Khalid argued that the posture adopted by some MPs suggested a moral high ground that does not reflect the realities of internal political contests.

“Especially when it comes to our internal elections, both the NDC and the NPP, we all have these things that we need to address. Instead of sounding like you are the saint, can any Member of Parliament admit that he has never given anything before he came to Parliament? That hypocritical stand they took was very hurtful because we knew the relationship he had with them,” he added.

Despite the earlier controversy, the campaign team remains confident, particularly after the party’s investigative committee dismissed the allegations.

Meanwhile, a new survey by Global InfoAnalytics projects a win for Baba Jamal in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election. Conducted between February 28 and March 1 and sampling 972 voters across the constituency, the poll places him ahead of his main rival, Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The by-election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The poll, conducted between February 28 and March 1, sampled 972 voters across the constituency. Findings from the research place Baba Jamal significantly ahead of his closest competitor, Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Afenyo-Markin accuses gov’t of using anti-corruption drive to target opponents https://www.adomonline.com/afenyo-markin-accuses-govt-of-using-anti-corruption-drive-to-target-opponents/ Sat, 28 Feb 2026 11:53:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636140 Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the government of using anti-corruption prosecutions as a political tool, warning that the approach risks creating public perceptions of guilt before the courts have ruled.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, after President John Dramani Mahama delivered the 2026 State of the Nation Address, Afenyo-Markin said he supports accountability in principle but questioned how the government is pursuing high-profile cases.

“The way and manner it is done is what we are questioning. You show signs of selective justice,” he said.

According to the Minority Leader, the administration’s handling of corruption-related investigations gives the impression that prosecutions are being used to punish political opponents rather than uphold fairness under the law.

He was particularly critical of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, which he had previously described as unconstitutional.

In January 2025, he publicly called on the Attorney-General to dismantle the body, arguing that it bypasses established institutions and weakens democratic accountability.

Afenyo-Markin also faulted what he described as the government’s early decision to involve the Office of the Special Prosecutor in cases that were already before the courts.

He said the better approach would have been to allow existing judicial processes to run their course.

“You allow the courts to do their work and pronounce independently, instead of creating parallel processes,” he argued.

The Minority Leader further raised concerns about bail conditions imposed on some suspects, describing them as excessive and designed to humiliate.

“I see that as one of the ways to frustrate, to punish, and to create a certain impression on the minds of the public that you’re already guilty,” he said.

Don’t bring a stranger – Nana B tells Ayawaso East constituents ahead of by-election https://www.adomonline.com/dont-bring-a-stranger-nana-b-tells-ayawaso-east-constituents-ahead-of-by-election/ Fri, 27 Feb 2026 07:57:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2635630 Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appealed to voters in Ayawaso East to turn out in large numbers and support the party’s parliamentary candidate, Baba Ali Yussif, in the March 3 by-election.

Speaking during a community engagement in the constituency, Nana B, as he is widely known, described Baba Ali as a homegrown candidate whose life story is closely tied to Ayawaso East.

He emphasised that the aspirant’s deep roots in the area make him the right choice to represent the people in Parliament.

According to Nana B, Baba Ali has not only lived in the constituency for years but has also worked and taught there, giving him firsthand understanding of the daily challenges residents face.

“Baba Ali Yussif is your brother. He sleeps with you, he wakes up with you, and he has taught in this constituency before. He was born here; the food you all eat is the same food he eats. Don’t bring in any stranger. This is your brother. As you see him here, even after you vote for him, he will still be here, available and with you,” he said in pidgin.

The by-election follows the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January while receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Five candidates, including former High Commissioner to Nigeria Baba Jamal, are seeking to succeed Alhaji Toure. The others are independent candidates: Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda, David Kannor, and Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal People’s Party (LPP).

Addressing the chairman, executives, branch officers, and party faithful, Asmah said he was stepping forward with humility and a strong sense of responsibility to the party.

“Mr Chairman, executives, branch executives, and fellow patriots, I stand before you. My name is Charles Asmah. I have served you as your servant since 2012,” he stated.

Reflecting on his journey within the party, Asmah recounted the aftermath of the NPP’s 2012 electoral defeat, describing it as a pivotal period that demanded unity, sacrifice, and strategic mobilisation.

“When we lost the election in 2012, we had to come together through demonstrations, mobilisation, collective responsibility, and strategic direction to fight and recapture power in 2016,” he said.

He noted that in 2017, he served as Deputy Treasurer but assumed additional responsibilities when the substantive Treasurer returned to Ghana.

“In 2017, my substantive Treasurer had to go back to Ghana. I had to choose between myself and you, and I chose you. I stayed behind and served as Acting Treasurer,” he explained.

Asmah said his commitment and performance led to his appointment as Substantive Treasurer in 2018, a role he executed with diligence, transparency, and accountability. In 2022, he was re-elected to the position, which he described as a renewed vote of confidence in his stewardship.

“Because of dedication, hard work, and tenacity, I was given another mandate in 2022,” he said.

He added that, together with the Financial Secretary and other executives, including Prince and members of the chapter, the leadership has prioritised financial discipline and trust.

“We have worked hard to ensure that you can trust us with your money. Accountability, responsibility, and integrity have been our hallmark,” he stressed.

Outlining his vision as aspiring First Vice Chairman, Asmah pledged to deepen policy engagement within NPP-UK and intensify revenue mobilisation to strengthen the chapter’s operations.

“Together with the executives, we will work harder on the policy front, enhance revenue mobilisation, and build a stronger, more united front,” he assured.

He also expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in the 2028 general election.

“We will work tirelessly to ensure that Dr Bawumia becomes our next President,” he declared.

Lawyer Asmah urged delegates and members to assess his record of loyalty, service, and accountability as they prepare to cast their votes, promising inclusive leadership and unwavering commitment to the ideals of the NPP.

At a press conference in Kumasi, the group praised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s track record, highlighting her academic excellence, integrity, and commitment to national development.

They noted that her leadership qualities and years of public service make her a strong contender to unite the party and deliver effective governance.

The group traced her academic journey from Wesley Girls’ High School to higher education at the University of Dakar, the University of Cape Coast, and York University in Canada, where she obtained her postgraduate and doctoral degrees. According to them, her steady rise through academia reflects her dedication and competence.

They also highlighted her historic appointment as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast in 2008, where she became the first woman to head a public university in Ghana.

During her tenure, the university saw major improvements in academic programmes, research development, and technology infrastructure.

The teachers further pointed to her contributions on the global stage, including her role with UNESCO and her fellowship with the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

They said these achievements demonstrate her ability to represent Ghana internationally and contribute to policy development.

They added that her transition into politics and her current role as Vice President under John Dramani Mahama reflect her continued commitment to national service, particularly in promoting education, youth empowerment, and inclusive development.

The Platform concluded by urging the NDC and Ghanaians to support Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s potential candidature, stressing that Ghana needs experienced, visionary, and unifying leadership as the country prepares for the 2028 elections.

Bagbin pushes for third political force in Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/bagbin-pushes-for-third-political-force-in-ghana/ Thu, 19 Feb 2026 09:40:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2632700 The Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, has called for the development of a strong third political bloc in Ghana, arguing that broader competition would strengthen the country’s democratic culture.

He made the remarks on Wednesday, February 18, during a Political Inclusion and Consensus Building Forum organised by the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA).

Reflecting on Ghana’s political evolution since the start of the Fourth Republic in 1992, Bagbin recounted his participation in the maiden congress of the National Democratic Congress in Cape Coast, highlighting how the gathering brought together people from diverse backgrounds, fostering national unity.

He noted that he had also attended congresses of the New Patriotic Party upon invitation, where he observed a similar atmosphere of inclusion and engagement.

Despite these experiences, the Speaker expressed concern over the dominance of two major parties in Ghana’s political landscape.

“Now, we seem to have only two strong, vibrant, surviving parties,” he said. “For me, I think we need a third force.”

2028 elections: Early polls are misleading – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu https://www.adomonline.com/2028-elections-early-polls-are-misleading-kyei-mensah-bonsu/ Mon, 16 Feb 2026 11:13:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2631541 Former Majority Leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, has cautioned against conducting opinion polls or making predictions so far ahead of Ghana’s 2028 presidential election, describing such forecasts as unrealistic.

Speaking on JoyNews AM show on February 16, he said, “In politics, three years is too long a distance for you to predict that, oh, this is going to happen in three years. You’re not being realistic, if I should be blunt, because in politics, one week could even change anything.”

Kyei-Mensah Bonsu cited the example of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter to illustrate the unpredictability of elections.

“I remember President Carter in the U.S. The opinion poll suggested a month before his election that he was leading by 60 percent. He was leading his opponent by 60 percent.

As the weeks and the days passed, his overwhelming margin of victory started declining. People started knowing him better. He had been a governor of Georgia. Yet the polls continued to indicate that his percentage of the margin of victory was declining.”

He continued: “To the extent that when the final week came, it declined to 52 percent. In the final days, Jimmy Carter won. He won by just, I think, 1.2 percent.”

Reflecting on the lessons for Ghana, Kyei-Mensah Bonsu warned, “Three years is too long a distance for any pollster of any sort to say that I predicted. That is not polling. That is prophecy. And I don’t believe in these prophecies anyway.”

His comments come amid growing speculation about the 2028 election.

NPP will not resort to money to win Ayawaso East — Evans Nimako https://www.adomonline.com/npp-will-not-resort-to-money-to-win-ayawaso-east-evans-nimako/ Thu, 12 Feb 2026 12:00:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630499 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will not use inducements to influence voters ahead of the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.

Speaking to Joy News, Evans Nimako, the director of elections for the party, expressed confidence in the party’s candidate, Baba Ali Yussif, popularly known as Homeboy.

“On election day, March 3, they will come out and vote massively for Yusi Baba Ali, known as the home boy. That is the work we are doing as a party,” Nimako said. “We are not going to dish out money as they did.”

The Ayawaso East by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting MP.

The NPP has fielded Baba Ali Yussif, relying on his local roots and acceptance among constituents, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) chose Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed as its candidate following a primary on February 7, 2026.

The NDC primary has faced scrutiny amid allegations of vote buying, with claims that delegates were offered cash and other items.

A party committee was set up to investigate the matter, and Baba Jamal has denied any wrongdoing while pledging full cooperation.

He emphasised the importance of a credible and transparent process both on the election day and in the period leading up to it.

“What is important is on the election day and events leading to the election day, how credible they will be,” he added.

NDC promised to govern differently, that must start from within – Inusah Fuseini https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-promised-to-govern-differently-that-must-start-from-within-inusah-fuseini/ Thu, 12 Feb 2026 07:31:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630363 Lawyer and former National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, says the party’s promise to Ghanaians to “do things differently” must begin with how it handles its own internal affairs.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, a member of the NDC’s Ayawaso East Investigative Committee warned that failure to properly deal with issues such as vote buying and inducement in party primaries could erode public confidence.

“The electorate gave NDC the power to govern this country on the promise that we will do things differently,” he said.

“That difference should extend to our internal operations, internal matters in the party.”

He argued that if the party downplays issues surrounding the Ayawaso East primary, it could erode public trust.

“So if the party… release matters of this nature… it will sap the confidence that people who give us the mandate… on the promise of doing things differently.”

His comments follow the setting up of the investigative committee to examine claims that aspirants offered inducements, including television sets and cash, to delegates during the primary held on Saturday, February 7.

Mr Fusseini said the committee’s findings were clear. “We came to the conclusion, an unalloyed and firm conclusion, that there was widespread illegal activity. I mean, the voter buying and inducement.”

He stressed that the misconduct was not attributable to a single individual. “Vote buying and inducement in the Ayawaso… and it was not limited to one candidate.”

He disclosed that the committee recommended the party could annul the results of the election. When host Evans Mensah asked if that recommendation was included, he responded: “Yeah.”

However, he said the committee also warned the party about the serious legal and practical barriers involved.

He explained that the elections were conducted under the supervision of the Electoral Commission and the results had already been certified.

“The elections were conducted and supervised by the Electoral Commission. The results were certified by the Electoral Commission as being credible.”

He raised what he called the key legal question: “Can a Political Party overturn the verdict of the Electoral Commission when they did not conduct the election?”

He acknowledged the public pressure for annulment but insisted the party must act responsibly. “People have a feeling… but the question is whether it will have a legal basis to stand up.”

Inusah Fuseini described what happened in Ayawaso East as “acts of impunity,” saying they violated several laws and internal party standards. He cited breaches of “the political party act, representation of people’s act CI 127… the criminal code… our Constitution… our code of ethics… our values.”

He warned against responding in a way that could lead to further wrongdoing. “Do you deal with impunity by acting with impunity? Do you deal with a wrong by acting wrongly?”

He also noted timing challenges, pointing out that the committee submitted its report “yesterday at 4 pm” and that “today… is the final day to present a candidate.”

Despite these hurdles, he said the committee still advised the party that annulment was possible, but only with careful consideration of the legal and procedural implications.

NDC has failed woefully; Baba Jamal should have been fined – Vitus Azeem https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-has-failed-woefully-baba-jamal-should-have-been-fined-vitus-azeem/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 15:07:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630179 Anti-corruption campaigner Vitus Azeem has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for clearing Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election despite allegations of vote-buying established during the parliamentary primary.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on Wednesday, Mr Azeem said the NDC missed an opportunity to demonstrate seriousness in dealing with electoral malpractice.

Mr Azeem argued that at the very least, the party should have imposed a penalty to deter future incidents.

“They have woefully failed to make a point. At worst, they would have fined him an amount of money, but just clearing him to go ahead with the by-election doesn’t make sense,” he stated.

His comment comes after the NDC recently announced it would proceed with Baba Jamal as its candidate for the Ayawaso East By-election, even though a three-member investigative committee established allegations of vote-buying during the primaries.

The anti-corruption advocate warned that such decisions only reinforce the culture of vote-buying in Ghana’s politics and weaken public confidence in internal party democracy.

He called on political parties to take stronger and more consistent measures to address inducement and misconduct during elections.

Ayawaso East: Why feed people for votes? Are they your children? – Kofi Kapito https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-why-feed-people-for-votes-are-they-your-children-kofi-kapito/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 14:23:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630170 The Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Kofi Kapito, has criticised the practice of providing food and other incentives to voters during political primaries, describing it as unethical and counterproductive.

Speaking on Joy News AM about voter inducement during party primaries, he said, “It’s not just an NDC thing. It’s a Ghana thing.”

“That I think we should take a look at. And using technicalities, it is allowed. But when the masses don’t buy the technicalities, it becomes a problem.”

He added that the lack of ethics in Ghana begins after formal education.

“Ghana, we don’t have ethics. In other jurisdictions, they even have ethical societies. I’m sure at the university, they teach ethics. The question is, what happens to us when we leave the university? We don’t even have ethics in this country. This has been going on for the longest time. Maybe for the first time, we could have used this as a yardstick to say that enough is enough.”

Kofi Kapito argued that such practices are part of a broader cultural issue that hinders progress in African societies.

“That is what we do as Africans and Black people. That’s why we are not progressing. In other jurisdictions, yes, something will happen, but they make sure that it doesn’t happen again. We will give excuses. This person also did it. So what? Does it make it right?”

He also reflected on how voter inducement has contributed to delays in representation in constituencies, drawing on his own experience as a first-time voter.

“I voted for the first time as a Ghanaian in 1992. This thing was not there. Actually, in 1992, the NPP, as a party, as is done in some places, were actually even paying for people to come and represent the party. So what happened?”

He condemned the expectation that candidates should “buy” votes with handouts or promises.

“He comes and tells you that, when Honorable came, he didn’t do anything for you. He didn’t do the road. If you vote for me, I’ll do that. I’ll do this. I’ll do that. So you take this and make sure that you vote for me. This denial is using words like “TNT,” “welfare,” and “I fed them.” “Please, why should you feed people to vote for you? Are they your children?”

Her comments come amid controversy surrounding the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ayawaso East parliamentary primaries, where Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed has been accused of distributing items, including 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs, to delegates on voting day.

Meanwhile, the NDC has confirmed Baba Jamal as its candidate for the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election after deciding that annulment of the internal parliamentary primary was not an option.

The General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, who was part of the Functional Executive Committee that received the three-member committee’s report mentioned that time constraints, potential legal challenges may arise if they decided to annul the results.

He also cited the lack of clear provisions in the party’s constitution to guide such situations as reasons for maintaining Baba Jamal as the validly elected parliamentary candidate.

Our politics is corrupt; rule by the rich is not democracy https://www.adomonline.com/our-politics-is-corrupt-rule-by-the-rich-is-not-democracy/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 12:59:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630109 Our politics, particularly in this 4th Republic is corrupt and getting worse.

Last weekend, in response to the Ayawaso-East National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary, President John Mahama, the Majority caucus and the party leadership all condemned the vote-buying and promised investigations.

Though, the winner, Baba Jamal has been cleared by the NDC’s three-member committee the probed the allegations, this episode shows some awareness that we have a problem.

The Office of Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) involvement is a cruel joke on all of us.

Just before the Ayawaso-East debacle, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) completed a Presidential primary in which the top three candidates spent more than a combined 400 million Ghana Cedis! Virtually every delegate spent a weekend at a resort.

There are many who have put up mansions just from being delegates over the years. Party executives attending leadership meetings are given envelopes at the door and told what the President wants.

MPs are given inducements to do their jobs. MMDCEs and District Assembly members openly discuss paying for both Presidential nominations and confirmation votes. And these are done by officials sworn to protect our republic and execute our laws.

And while at it, we sentence goat and cassava thieves to draconian sentences! And we fill our churches and mosques week-in, week-out.

These corrupt practices described here permeate every aspect of our public life, affecting education and contracts and Judicial decisions as the plutocrats look for many to buy votes and power. As a nation we need to deal with. We have come to our Prah River, like the Ashantis under Osei Tutu Adikan.

A democracy that cannot police itself will be policed by others. There are developments that we must support.

The lawsuits by Dr. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng and Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe is one initiative. They are seeking consequential, very non -controversial declarations about how our parties manage their primaries.

These processes are corrupt, undemocratic and exclusionary. Our parties operate private clubs controlled by secret cabals. Courts are very important, if they choose to be in such cases. In 2014, the Brazilian Judiciary unearthed the Petrobras scandal that unearthed 2.1 billion USD in bribes and 17 billion USD in lost revenue.

Our judges are citizens too. They care about Ghana- or they should. Let them be patriots and help fix Ghana and Judiciary’s repute.

The other approach is through constitutional reform that would entitle all party members to vote in Parliamentary and Presidential primaries and outlaw the exchange of money for votes.

This should be managed by the nation through voters’ registration not under control of the parties. Let’s save our democracy. Rule by the rich– plutocracy is not democracy. We must stop requiring good men to soil their hands before they can succeed in politics.

Long live Ghana.

EC to hold IPAC meeting today https://www.adomonline.com/ec-to-hold-ipac-meeting-today-2/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 11:04:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630053 The Electoral Commission (EC) will today, February 11, convene the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) as part of preparations for the Ayawaso East by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026. The session will take place at the EC’s corporate headquarters in Accra.

The EC stated that the meeting will focus exclusively on arrangements and procedures for conducting the by-election, instructing political parties to send no more than two representatives each.

The by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, on January 4, 2026, following a brief illness.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially acclaimed Baba Ali as its parliamentary candidate, following consultations and a review of candidates who could effectively mobilize support within the limited campaign period.

In the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, Ghana’s High Commissioner, Baba Jamal, emerged as the party’s candidate.

The election faced calls for annulment amid allegations of vote buying and inducement, which were investigated by a three-member committee. The committee has since submitted its report, clearing Baba Jamal to represent the NDC in the by-election.

Why committee didn’t cancel NDC Ayawaso East primary – Fifi Kwetey explains https://www.adomonline.com/why-committee-didnt-cancel-ndc-ayawaso-east-primary-fifi-kwetey-explains/ Wed, 11 Feb 2026 10:41:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2630028 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has explained why it will not annul the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary, confirming Mohammed Baba Jamal as its candidate for the upcoming by-election.

The decision comes amid allegations of vote-buying during the party’s parliamentary primary on Saturday, February 7, which Baba Jamal has consistently denied. A three-member committee tasked with investigating the claims submitted a report that informed the party’s decision.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, February 10, the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, cited several factors that prevented the annulment of the primary.

He highlighted time constraints, noting that the Electoral Commission is expected to close nominations for the by-election on Wednesday, February 11, leaving limited opportunity to restart the process.

He also referenced legal and constitutional considerations, explaining that the party’s constitution does not provide for annulment of parliamentary primaries under such circumstances.

“The committee’s report is that ideally, we should have annulled the primary. However, the committee acknowledges real obstacles that make it difficult for us to do that. The party’s constitution doesn’t have a provision for annulment of the election. We are time-bound because we need to present a candidate to the EC on February 11, and there are legal challenges that could be mounted by whoever won. In light of that, the party has taken the recommendations, and we have no option but to present Baba Jamal as our candidate,” he said.

Mr. Kwetey also outlined plans to expand the investigative committee as part of broader internal reforms aimed at strengthening party processes.

“We’re going to do a comprehensive review of the whole process that led to our internal elections. We’re expanding the committee by adding four more members, to make it a seven-member committee, so that they can come out with recommendations to address these inappropriate practices in future elections,” he added.

According to the General Secretary, the committee found inappropriate conduct by all candidates, highlighting the need for reforms to prevent similar issues in future internal elections.

The NDC has reaffirmed Mohammed Baba Jamal as its parliamentary candidate as it prepares to contest the Ayawaso East by-election.

His lawyer, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, confirmed to Graphic Online that Mr. Jamal was interrogated over alleged vote-buying linked to the party’s parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7.

He also explained that Mr. Jamal was questioned regarding an alleged assault on an OSP officer dispatched to serve him an invitation letter.

Counsel maintained that his client had no knowledge of items purportedly being distributed in his name, adding: “If he was aware and being a lawyer, he would have informed people of the position of the law.”

Annul Ayawaso East primary, ban offenders for life – Tony Aidoo to NDC https://www.adomonline.com/annul-ayawaso-east-primary-ban-offenders-for-life-tony-aidoo-to-ndc/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 10:23:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629646 Dr Tony Aidoo, former Ghanaian Ambassador to the Netherlands, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cancel the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, over widespread allegations of vote-buying and inducement.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dr Aidoo said the controversy sparked by reports of television sets, boiled eggs and other items being distributed to delegates reflects a deeper erosion of internal party democracy that must be addressed decisively.

“I support a cancellation of the elections. And those involved barred from contesting the elections again. Not only one election. Barred from holding public office,” he said. “And about those who took the money, if you can catch them, chuck them out of the party.”

His comments come as the NDC faces intense scrutiny over the conduct of the primary that produced Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election — a contest triggered after the death of the late MP Mahama Naser Toure.

Allegations of vote-buying have dominated the national conversation, with civil society groups, Election Watch Ghana and Transparency International Ghana condemning the reported distribution of 32-inch televisions and other items to delegates as a threat to democratic integrity.

The controversy has also drawn calls from the NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament for the annulment of the primary results and for sanctions against any aspirants found culpable.

Dr Aidoo criticised the notion of simply “nipping” vote-buying in the bud, arguing the practice has “taken root” and must be uprooted completely — a metaphor he said highlights how entrenched inducement has become in political contests. “The thing has already taken root. It’s how it has flowered,” he said.

Baba Jamal has denied the allegations, telling the media he only heard about the distribution of televisions after the election and insisting his victory was genuine. He has cooperated with an NDC-appointed three-member committee tasked with probing the claims and is expected to appear before it as part of the investigation.

The NDC committee, led by veteran politician Kofi Totobi Quakyi, is expected to submit its report on February 10, 2026, to guide the party’s next steps.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has also announced investigations into the alleged vote-buying, alongside similar claims from other party primaries, stressing the probes are grounded in law and evidence.

Politicians will soon distribute Range Rovers – Dr Asah-Asante on vote-buying https://www.adomonline.com/politicians-will-soon-distribute-range-rovers-dr-asah-asante-on-vote-buying/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 09:21:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629578 Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Department of Political Science, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has cautioned that Ghana’s growing culture of vote-buying could soon reach alarming levels, with politicians potentially distributing luxury vehicles such as Range Rovers to influence voters.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Dr Asah-Asante said inducement in elections has become increasingly normalised, largely because society has failed to consistently condemn or punish the practice.

“We have seen time and again where political actors induce people. Go and give goodies to voters just to sway their votes to one direction or another and we allow it to go. We as a society have acquiesced to that and allowed this thing to go on.

“Now look at how they’re taking the conversation to the level that they’re taking it to with the distribution of television and whatnot. A time will come, I’m sure they’re going to distribute even Range Rovers,” he cautioned.

Dr Asah-Asante also questioned whether political parties genuinely have the resolve to deal with vote-buying, even when committees are set up to investigate such allegations.

He pointed out that while parties often promise to act on recommendations, enforcement remains uncertain.

However, he expressed skepticism about whether any party can truly crack down on inducement when the practice has become widespread.

“Are you sure the party will have the political will to crack the whip if any recommendation is given in that direction?” he asked.

While welcoming ongoing investigations into alleged vote-buying, Dr Asah-Asante maintained that meaningful accountability will be the real test.

“We look forward to seeing something like that. But for me, I still have my doubts.”

NPP to hold national Thanksgiving Service after presidential primary https://www.adomonline.com/npp-to-hold-national-thanksgiving-service-after-presidential-primary/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 08:38:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629542 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to hold a National Thanksgiving Service following the successful conduct of its presidential primary on January 31.

The internal election saw former Vice President and the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, win with 56.48 per cent of the votes. Party officials described the process as peaceful, credible, and transparent.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 9, the NPP said the thanksgiving activities aim to express gratitude to God for the smooth and orderly conduct of the exercise.

“Following the successful conduct of the New Patriotic Party’s Presidential Primary held on January 31, 2026, the Party will hold a National Thanksgiving Service to express its profound gratitude to the Almighty God for a peaceful and historic exercise,” part of the statement said.

The activities will begin with an Islamic Thanksgiving Prayer Service on Friday, February 13, at the National Mosque in Kanda, followed by an Interdenominational Christian Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, February 22, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Auditorium.

“The National Thanksgiving Service will be graced by the Party’s Presidential Candidate and will bring together Christian and Muslim clergy, party leaders, current and former Members of Parliament, former Ministers, former CEOs/MDs, MDEs, and other former government appointees,” the statement added.

The NPP noted that the services will also serve as a moment for unity and reflection as the party prepares for the next phase of its political activities.

Vote-buying is killing our democracy – Ras Mubarak https://www.adomonline.com/vote-buying-is-killing-our-democracy-ras-mubarak/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 08:25:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2629534 Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, says the practice of vote-buying in electioneering is posing a significant threat to Ghana’s democratic system.

He believes this practice discourages capable individuals from participating in politics, as they may be deterred by the financial demands of securing a position.

In an interview with Barima Kofi Dawson on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem Mr. Mubarak emphasized that vote-buying also makes it challenging for qualified persons to serve the country, as the process often favors those with the most resources rather than the most merit.

His remarks resonate with concerns raised about alleged vote-buying in the just concluded NDC primary for the Ayawaso East by-election.

He expressed concern that the electoral system is still being controlled by those with deep pockets, and no concrete steps have been taken to address it.

“Whenever we hold an election, vote-buying occurs and we just condemn it without taking action against it. It’s killing our democracy and making it difficult for good people to get into either party positions or parliamentary positions.”

Ras Mubarak pointed out that ‘moneycracy’ in elections fuels corruption, as it allows individuals with financial influence to manipulate the system, undermining fair representation and accountability.

He said this can lead to elected officials prioritizing personal gain over public service.

“Vote-buying leads to corruption; if it costs ¢5-7 million to get elected as an MP, the salary won’t cover the investment, so other means are sought to recoup costs and turn a profit.

“That’s why many MPs are often absent from parliamentary sessions; they’re focused on securing funds for their next elections rather than doing their job,” he stated.

He warned that if a solution is not found to this menace, the country risks having criminals running its affairs.

He therefore condemned the Ayawaso East primary election irregularities, stating that if those involved in the alleged vote-buying are found guilty after investigation, they should be banned from contesting any elections in the country for two years.

Mr. Mubarak urged National Democratic Congress (NDC) to revert to the old Electoral College system which was introduced in 2015.

He said expanding the Electoral College will help eliminate the delegate system, which enables vote-buying during primaries.

He noted that some MPs, including Sam George, Dafeamekpor, and himself, could not have become MPs if the NDC had not expanded the Electoral College delegate system, as they could not have afforded to buy delegates’ votes.

In a notice dated February 6, 2026, addressed to the General Secretaries of all registered political parties, the Commission announced that the engagement will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at its corporate headquarters in Accra.

According to the EC, the meeting will focus solely on arrangements and procedures for conducting the Ayawaso East by-election. Political parties have been directed to send no more than two representatives each to the session.

The invitation was signed by Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Services, on behalf of the Chairperson of the Commission.

The Ayawaso East by-election was necessitated by the death of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, on January 4, 2026, following a short illness.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially named Baba Ali as its parliamentary candidate on January 27, following broad consultations and a review of who could effectively mobilize support within a limited campaign period.

In a parliamentary primary on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) elected Ghana’s High Commissioner, Baba Jamal, as its candidate. However, there have been calls for the election to be annulled amidst an ongoing probe into alleged vote buying and inducement that contributed to his victory.

Ayawaso East: OSP has no mandate to probe alleged vote buying – Haruna Mohammed https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-osp-has-no-mandate-to-probe-alleged-vote-buying-haruna-mohammed/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 06:48:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628972 The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has questioned the decision by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate alleged vote buying in the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, Haruna Mohammed argued that the OSP, as a state-funded body established to address corruption in public institutions and state-related activities, has no authority to investigate private individuals or internal party elections.

“See the Special Prosecutor also issuing a statement, a populist statement, a man who has not been able to prosecute even a single case, he is there doing populist imperial tactics. The OSP is talking too much,” he said.

He further criticised the OSP’s statement announcing the probe, describing it as weak and legally flawed.

“That was a very weak letter, and he should have known that some of these things that he has carried in the letter would not even give the grounds on which he wants to investigate. Something happened in Ayawaso East, and you went to put in the NPP. That is unnecessary. The very foundations of the OSP have failed,” he added.

The OSP had earlier announced plans to investigate candidates involved in the primary following allegations of vote buying, a move Haruna Mohammed described as exceeding the office’s legal mandate.

“None of the NPP members who contested for that (Ayawaso East) is holding any public office. I am telling you that the people are private individuals; none of them works for the state. The OSP was not set up to go and investigate private citizens; it is a state-sponsored organisation, and it is important for him to investigate what happens to the state,” he argued.

How can you monitor it? It’s difficult – Ashie Moore on war against vote buying https://www.adomonline.com/how-can-you-monitor-it-its-difficult-ashie-moore-on-war-against-vote-buying/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 06:47:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628970 The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, has admitted that the party is facing serious challenges in controlling the influence of money during its internal elections.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Channel One TV on the sidelines of the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, Mr Ashie Moore said monitoring or preventing vote-buying has become “extremely difficult” for party leadership.

According to him, even with security presence and transparency measures, modern financial systems have outpaced traditional monitoring methods.

The former Adentan MP explained that with more than 1,000 delegates voting in Ayawaso East alone, illicit transactions can easily go undetected.

“For vote-buying, how can you monitor it? How can you control it? There are over 1,000 delegates here. As a Regional Chairman, National Chairman or General Secretary, what can you do? Do you know what the aspirant is doing in his bedroom?” he asked.

Mr Ashie Moore noted that political actors have moved away from the use of physical cash to digital platforms such as Mobile Money and bank transfers, making detection even more difficult.

“Today, MoMo is available and so is bank transfer. It is everywhere. It is very difficult to look at. I haven’t seen anything myself; it’s mostly hearsay, but I think all political parties must work seriously on it,” he added.

The Ayawaso East NDC parliamentary primary was hit with allegations of vote-buying, particularly against Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, who emerged victorious.

Baba Jamal won the contest with 431 votes, representing 45 per cent, narrowly defeating Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes, or 41 per cent, in an election clouded by inducement claims.

During the polls, Baba Jamal’s campaign team distributed 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates, sparking jostling among some voters who sought to receive the items.

Speaking to the media, Baba Jamal confirmed the distribution but denied that it was intended to influence votes. He said generosity had always been part of his public life, adding that he routinely supports people financially and materially.

In a statement issued by the President’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, it was noted that while allegations of vote-buying were made against several candidates who contested the primaries, Baba Jamal’s case stood out because he was the only serving public officer among them.

President John Dramani Mahama has since recalled Baba Jamal from his position as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the NDC has constituted a three-member committee, chaired by Kofi Totobi Quakyi, to investigate the allegations and submit its report by February 10, 2026.

Ayawaso East: Presidency, NDC bigwigs unhappy over Baba Jamal’s victory – Haruna Mohammed alleges https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-presidency-ndc-bigwigs-unhappy-over-baba-jamals-victory-haruna-mohammed-alleges/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 06:35:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628957 Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has claimed that senior officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are unhappy following Baba Jamal’s victory in the Ayawaso East parliamentary primaries held on Saturday, February 7.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe, Mr. Mohammed linked the alleged displeasure within the NDC to the President’s decision to recall Baba Jamal from his post as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, over claims of vote-buying.

According to him, the presidency, the leadership of the NDC and the parliamentary majority were dissatisfied with Baba Jamal’s victory, prompting his recall from the diplomatic position.

He further alleged that the discontent is rooted in Baba Jamal’s perceived alignment with the NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

“It is a clear chance to tell the people of Ghana that the presidency was not happy that Asiedu Nketia’s person had won the election. And all the machinery is against Baba Jamal; they don’t just like the man, they hate him, including the majority caucus in Parliament. I don’t know what he has done for him to be hated so much within the circle of the NDC,” he claimed.

Baba Jamal’s victory in the primary clears the way for him to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3.

The closely fought primary attracted significant public attention, amid reports of alleged inducement and vote-buying involving some of the aspirants.
