The US embassy in Ghana in a bid to control the damage done by President Donald Trump following his “shithole” comment has tweeted to literally apologise to Ghana and the rest of the African continent.
According to the tweet by the US embassy, America has great respect for Ghana and values the relationship’ between the two countries.
“We have great respect for the people of Africa. Our commitment to Ghana and all our African partners remains strong. It’s an honour for our staff to serve here alongside Ghanaians, and we deeply value our relationship with them,” the tweet read.
Mr Trump is alleged to have described African counties and Haiti as “shithole” countries. The US President’s statement led Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo to also tweet that; “The language of US President Donald Trump that the African continent, Haiti and El Salvador are “shithole countries” is extremely unfortunate.
Ghana is certainly not a “shithole country”. We will not accept such insults, even from a leader of a friendly country, no matter how powerful.”
But President Trump on Friday denied the allegations, saying “the language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made – a big setback for DACA!”
Trump later tweeted he “Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said ‘take them out.’ Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!”
