As part of activities marking this year’s World Drug Day, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has engaged persons with substance use disorder in Ashaiman in a renewed effort to promote awareness, prevention, and recovery.

The outreach formed part of nationwide activities commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed globally to highlight the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of support systems for recovery.

During the engagement, some participants shared personal stories of addiction, regret, and recovery, offering emotional accounts of how substance abuse affected their lives and families. Others spoke about their ongoing efforts to rebuild their futures through treatment and support.

Officials from NACOC used the platform to encourage individuals battling addiction not to lose hope, stressing that recovery is possible with the right intervention, care, and community support.

They also reiterated the importance of prevention and public education, noting that awareness remains one of the strongest tools in addressing drug abuse, particularly among young people.

The Commission emphasized that rehabilitation and reintegration remain central to Ghana’s drug control strategy, adding that sustained collaboration with stakeholders is key to reducing the impact of substance abuse on communities.

The event ended with a call for continued support for prevention campaigns and treatment programmes aimed at building a safer and healthier society.
