The incident occurred on Sunday after an earlier confrontation between the two groups was reported to the police. Despite initial interventions, tensions later escalated, resulting in a violent clash during which members of both factions allegedly wielded offensive weapons and fired gunshots, causing fear and panic among residents.

Following the incident, unverified reports circulating in the community and on social media suggested that the clash had claimed at least one life. However, the Winneba Divisional Commander, ACP Ibrahim Opoku, has categorically denied those claims.

Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, January 27, ACP Opoku clarified that no deaths were recorded as a result of the disturbance. He disclosed that two individuals sustained life-threatening injuries during the violence and are currently responding to treatment.

According to him, the injured persons are receiving medical care at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where they remain under police protection.

“We have made some arrests, and the suspects have been remanded into prison custody. There has been no death, as reported. Some persons were wounded, and they are responding to treatment at various hospitals,” ACP Opoku stated.

He added that calm has since been restored to the area, with police maintaining a strong presence to prevent any further escalation.

The police say investigations into the incident are ongoing, as officers work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the clash. Efforts are also underway to track down and arrest other suspects believed to have played roles in the violence.

The Police Service has meanwhile appealed to residents, particularly the youth, to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue, warning that anyone found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The incident, which involved the use of cutlasses and firearms, left several people injured and triggered panic among residents.

Although the exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear, eyewitnesses said the violence escalated rapidly after members of one group allegedly attacked their rivals with cutlasses. The opposing group reportedly retaliated by firing gunshots, throwing the area into chaos.

Police officers were swiftly deployed to the scene to restore calm.

Confirming the incident to Adom News, the Winneba Divisional Police Commander, ACP Ibrahim Opoku, said some suspects have been arrested, while two individuals are currently receiving treatment under police guard.

“We have made some arrests, and two people are currently on admission under police protection,” he said.

ACP Opoku, however, declined to state whether the injured persons are victims or suspects, adding that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading to the clash and to identify all those involved.

Security has since been intensified in parts of Winneba to prevent further disturbances as police continue their investigations into the violent encounter.
