The visit came ahead of her highly anticipated 2025 Shay Concert, set for November 22, 2025, at West Hills Mall in Weija.

Wendy Shay went to the palace to seek the blessing and protection of Nii Ayi Okufobour, the traditional leader of Weija, for her annual show.

Upon her arrival, members of the traditional household, including an oracle, performed cultural rites and recited incantations to formally welcome the singer.

During the ceremony, the oracle offered Wendy Shay a small cup of what was believed to be palm wine, a traditional drink used in local rituals.

The singer, however, appeared hesitant and politely declined the offering, despite encouragement from those around her.

Nodding her head in refusal, she observed the ritual from a distance while the oracle poured the drink as libation and held Wendy’s hand to perform a traditional rite three times, allowing the proceedings to continue.

The 2025 Shay Concert, sponsored by Hisense Ghana and The Luckiest Africa, will feature performances from top Ghanaian artists including Showboy, KiDi, Mr Drew, Eno Barony, Larusso, Quamina MP, Kofi Mole, and Lasmid.

Co-tenant jailed for sexually molesting five-year-old girl https://www.adomonline.com/co-tenant-jailed-for-sexually-molesting-five-year-old-girl/ Sat, 20 Jan 2024 09:06:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2344362 A 35-year-old labourer who sexually molested a five-year-old girl at Weija in Accra has been sentenced to one year imprisonment by the Gender Based Violence Court.

Moro Yusif is being held for using his penis to “brush” the vagina of the victim.

Charged with indecent assault, Yusif pleaded guilty with explanation.

Yusif told the court that he was playing with the victim to aid his erection and placed her on his lap.

According to him, he got wet in the process just then the victim’s mother called her.

The accused said the victim’s mother followed up to his room and found that his boxer shorts was wet and concluded that he had defiled her.

“On my laps, I was using her buttock to rub my boxer shorts, although the victim was wearing her pants and a straight dress,” the accused told the court.

The prosecution urged the court to give the accused person a deterrent sentence because as an adult he had the responsibility to protect the victim instead of sexually molesting her.

Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei who held the brief of Chief Inspector Gladys Aikins- Asare told the court that the complainant was a trader and mother of the victim.

The prosecution said the parties in the matter resided in the same house at Old Weija, Accra.

On January 8, this year at about 6:00pm, the complainant and her husband, a witness in the case, were seated in front of their room relaxing and could see their daughter where they were.

The prosecution said a witness saw the hand of the victim trying to open the door of the accused person.

The prosecutor said the complainant followed up and asked the accused person what her daughter was doing in his room.

The accused person did not answer.

The complainant took the victim away, but one David Gyasi and his friend went to confront the accused and they found that his boxer shorts was wet.

The prosecution said the accused person told them that the victim came to play in his room and in the process, he ejaculated in his boxer shorts and that he had used his penis to brush the victim’s vagina.

On January 9, 2024, the complainant together with two other witnesses reported the accused person to the Weija Divisional DOVVSU and she was given a Police medical form to seek medical care for the victim.

The prosecution said on January 15, 2024, the complainant returned the medical form duly endorsed by a medical officer.

Fire personnel attack journalists with helmet at Weija fire scene https://www.adomonline.com/fire-personnel-attack-journalists-with-helmet-at-weija-fire-scene/ Sun, 27 Nov 2022 20:01:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2188850 Two journalists have been manhandled by some fire officers who were deployed to a fire scene at Weija Junction on Saturday.

The personnel were responding to a fire outbreak that gutted a warehouse at Weija junction.

The two journalists, Akwasi Addo and Frank Osei, employees of Metro TV and Citi TV respectively were reporting on the fire incident.

Whilst taking coverage, a man in plain cloth approached the duo and covered the lense of their camera with his palm asking why they were videoing the scene.

He did not accept any explanation and tried to snatch the camera from the operator, Frank Osei, resulting in tense struggles between him and the journalists.

In a video of the scene recorded by another reporter, the man who failed to disclose his identity is heard threatening to slap a reporter.

Whilst the journalists struggled with the man over the camera, some other uniformed fire service personnel numbering about 10 joined him and physically attacked the journalists.

During the attack, one of them struck the left cheek of Frank with a safety helmet causing it to swell.

Parts of the camera got broken whilst a laptop computer which was in a backpack had its screen broken.

The case has been reported at SCC Police station while medical forms have been issued to them.

Some encroachers have been winning sand while others use explosives like dynamites to blast the rocks and sell them to contractors, which has weakened the base of the mountain.

The quarries, apart from posing dangerous risks to residents have ripped off the beautiful geographical scenery of the ridge.

Parts of Weija Hill risk imminent collapse – Experts warn https://www.adomonline.com/parts-of-weija-hill-risk-imminent-collapse-experts-warn/ Mon, 11 Apr 2022 15:18:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2103330 Experts in seismology have warned that parts of the Weija Hill close to the tollbooth face imminent collapse.

According to them, human activities such as sand mining and blasting of rocks have affected that part of the ridge; hence a heavy rainfall or earthquake in the area can result in a landslide.

A visit by JoyNews to the area discovered that residents usually experience tremors at night, a development that has caused a significant panic and fear among them.

In an interview with Maxwell Agbagba on the Joy In My Community programme, Principal Seismologist, Nicholas Opoku, hinted that the entire hill is unstable, especially the part closer to the tollbooth.

He added that other areas have soft rocks, making the mountain extremely weak to stand any heavy rainfall or an earthquake.

“Because it is also an earthquake-prone zone, it has undergone various shaking in the past so that you can see a lot of fractures in the rocks; they are actually weak. So it makes the place more prone to landslides.

“Even under gravity, you can have a landslide, and these landslides are also normally exacerbated by earthquakes. So it also compounds the risk of a landslide in the area.

“The materials are loose; so, when it rains heavily, it adds so much loads to destabilise the slope,” he said.

A resident, who has been living in the area for the past two decades, expressed concern about the quarrying activities on the hill.

Samuel Okine, however, stated that the phenomenon has been brought under control for some time now after the intervention of city authorities.

“Sometimes, you experience it twice or three times a day; it’s very sharp. You get up on your bed, and it goes. There is an erosion part there, which could be a landslide one day. Living at the edge is dangerous, and people still quarry stones,” he lamented.

You live on time bomb – Geological Authority warns Weija residents https://www.adomonline.com/you-live-on-time-bomb-geological-authority-warns-weija-residents/ Tue, 15 Mar 2022 21:42:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2091277 The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has warned that people around the Weija Ridge and Reservoir are living on a time bomb that is ticking away every day as the human activities on the mountains pose a great risk to their lives and property.

The authority explained that the sand winning and rock blasting activities on the ridge had gradually weakened the hills along the Accra-Cape Coast road, particularly around Weija in the Ga South municipality.

A Principal Seismologist of the GGSA, Nicholas Opoku, said the activities posed a great threat to the inhabitants around the area.

He gave the warning when a team of officials from various ministries and commissions in charge of the environment paid a visit to the Weija Ridge and Water Reservoir last Friday.

He said the Weija Ridge was part of the Akuapem Fault Zone, a line along which seismic waves occur, which accounted for the occurrence of earthquakes in the area.

He added that the hills in that area were geologically weak because they had a lot of fractures.

“What is making the problem much more difficult is the mining and sand winning activities going on here,” Mr Opoku said.

He added that those activities exposed the soft rocks, which had undergone serious erosion, and should the activities continue, it would completely erode the middle rocks and cause the hills, together with the buildings on them, to collapse.

“The risk is higher here since there are a lot of buildings on the mountains,” Mr Opoku added.

He warned people living in other highlands in the country not to engage in indiscriminate sand winning as the risks would “be difficult to manage”.

Visit

The team was made up of representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the GGSA and the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

Officials from the Forestry Commission, the Minerals Commission, the Forestry Services Division and the Ga South Municipal Assembly also joined the team.

The acting Deputy Executive Director of the EPA in charge of Operations, Ransford Sekyi, stated that the purpose of the visit was to assess the damage to the areas and decide on the way forward to salvage the situation.

Previous visits, he said, had been made in 2014, where the challenges were identified but their warning did not yield the expected results.

“Whenever it rains, the mud from here washes down to the main Accra-Cape Coast road. It has become an annual ritual,” Mr Sekyi said.

He explained that though the situation had worsened, a more permanent solution would be sought to address it.

Way forward

Mr Sekyi mentioned that stakeholder meetings would be held to proffer ways to resolve the issues.

He added that to salvage the situation, some buildings on the ridge as well as below it would have to be demolished, which the assembly was to oversee.

“The only thing we see them do is that during downpours, they de-silt, but that is treating the symptoms of the challenge. We have to actually uproot the problem,” the EPA operations head said.

Mr Sekyi said the agency had designs to rehabilitate the ridge, adding that together with all stakeholders, including the residents around the ridge, a sustainable plan would be implemented.

Funding

The Municipal Coordinating Director of Ga South, Mr Isaac Kwakye, stated that funding was a major hindrance to the progress of work on the ridge as the assembly did not have the huge amounts of money involved.

“The assembly can work to an extent, so we always collaborate with other agencies such as the EPA and the Lands Commission to help us with some of these activities,” Mr Kwakye said.

Beyi W’ano: We need immediate attention – Assembly Members cry https://www.adomonline.com/beyi-wano-we-need-immediate-attention-assembly-members-cry/ Mon, 28 Jun 2021 15:35:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1979386 Assembly Members at Akwasa and New Weija East Electoral areas in the Ga South Municipality are calling on the government to, as a matter of urgency, help address the perennial flooding in the area as the rainy season begins.

Residents at the Block Factory, SCC, Broadcasting all the way to parts of the Weija Old Barrier and its environs have been victims of perennial flooding as a result of drainage systems in the area with several displaced and properties destroyed annually.

Speaking on the Beyi W’ano segment of Adom 106.3 FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Monday, Assemblyman for Akwasa, Yaw Atamfuri, said all attempts to get the attention of relevant authorities over the years have proven futile.

Until last year when a contract was awarded for waterways to be created, Mr Atamfuri explained there have been times the assembly had to mobilise its own resources to desilt gutters coupled with occasional support from the urban roads.

He said the contractor was now mobilising resources and was yet to commence work but another big hurdle is a Ghana Water Company pipeline close to the gutter line which needs to be relocated.

Despite notices served the company, Mr Atamfuri said they were yet to take any action regarding the relocation of the pipeline to pave way for work to begin.

Assemblywoman for Weija East, Grace Ntiamoah, who also spoke on the show, complained of similar issues affecting her people.

The duo has therefore appealed to the government to treat the matter as urgent to bring a lasting solution.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has predicted that more floods will hit Ghana’s major cities of Accra and Kumasi during this year’s rainy season.
