Lands Minister orders temporary shutdown of mining company https://www.adomonline.com/lands-minister-orders-temporary-shutdown-of-mining-company/ Sat, 28 Oct 2023 18:03:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2311217 The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources responsible for mining, George Mireku Duker, has taken decisive action by ordering the immediate shutdown of the Gang He Mining Company, a Chinese mining firm operating in the Wassa Akropong District of the Western Region.

The Deputy Minister was left with no choice but to issue this directive after conducting a thorough inspection of the company on Friday, October 27, 2023.

During his visit, he uncovered numerous violations in the company’s operations that could not be ignored.

He was particularly unhappy about the absence of essential safety protocols at the company, the non-utilisation of granted concessions, and the blatant disregard for the nation’s mineral laws.

He was unhappy to learn that the company has not been able to develop its concessions and also not act in accordance with the tenets of its license.

Addressing the management of the company during the tour, the Deputy Minister disclosed the temporal closure is a proactive step taken by him to prevent the company from complete collapse.

He noted that as Deputy Minister, he has the responsibility to ensure the survival of the company and the ban which will last for six months will allow the company to put in the right measures that will ensure its revival.

Mr. Duker explained that, it is in the interest of the country that mining companies thrive in their operations and that the ministry through the Minerals Commission will collaborate with the management

“Stop whatever you are doing, the ministry will write and invite you to Accra for us to guide you. Our intent is not to stop companies or frustrate investors but to guide investors to recoup their investors meaningfully. We are here to see Gang He operating to the optimum. If you can’t run me through safety protocols, then it means the bases are not right”.

“We want to see you operate profitably so that Ghanaians will have work to do. We don’t want the company to close down because you have Ghanaians working here and their livelihoods depend on you. We want to see you mining to meet international best practices,” he said.

He also implored the company to seek extra investment to enable it to develop the concessions it has been granted.

“It is very unfortunate and I don’t see why if our grade isn’t giving that opportunity to be commercially viable, you can add and invest in technology that will make you economically viable. You can form synergies. Form synergies if you don’t have the capital to inject it into your mines to upgrade and lift your concessions.

“When we give you the license, we expect you to use the license to engage meaningfully. Operating meaningfully doesn’t depend on one person. It could fall on synergies. You could add some companies to add to what you have. We need more companies. It is not enough acquiring a license all over. You can’t secure concessions and leave them. We won’t tolerate that,” he said.

The District Chief Executive of Wassa Akropong in the Western Region lamented the inability of the company to develop its huge concession.

He described the development as unfortunate but assured of the preparedness of the assembly to help the company retool its operations and resume mining activities.

Traders at Wassa Akropong in the Amenfi East District of the Western Region are lamenting the poor state of their market.

According to them, the market is not conducive for trading but they are forced to remain there because there is no alternative.

The women expressed their frustration on The People’s Forum, a segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday.

The traders disclosed the market becomes inaccessible, especially when it rains due to the poor drainage systems in the market.

Their wares, they noted, are always at the mercy of the weather as they have no good place to keep them.

Aside from this, the traders bemoaned some faceless persons have also turned the market into a refuse site while weed smokers also use there as their toilet facility.

They are, therefore, appealing to the government and relevant stakeholders to come to their aid by ensuring that the market is constructed as soon as possible.

The two – Tahiru Issaka alias Red, 22, and Yahuza Mohammed, 34, – were arrested at hideouts in two different locations in the Ashanti Region on 25th August 2022.

One person, identified by the two suspects as Gafar Ziyech Abdul, alias Stone, the leader of the gang, has also been killed.

This was contained in a police statement which indicated the arrest was through the combined effort of the Western, Ashanti and the Bono East Regional Police Intelligence Directorates over an eight-week period operation.

Information indicates that the deceased was attacked by the armed robbers after he had closed from work on Saturday, August 27.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Amenfi East, Frederick Korankye, confirmed the incident on Connect FM.

He indicated that the armed robbers made away with an unspecified amount of money, gold bars together with some mobile phones and fled into the nearby bush.

“Around 10:00 pm, I received a call from the Police Commander that a gold buyer has been killed by armed robbers. He had even gotten home and parked his vehicle. He was there with his child when one of the armed robbers pulled a pump action and demanded his bag.

“He handed over the bag to the armed robber and started shouting after a few minutes for help. Unknowingly, one of the armed robbers was hiding in the bush, he fired gunshots and killed the gold buyer instantly,” he narrated.

The deceased left behind two wives and three children.

According to the MCE, the police command has initiated investigations to arrest the armed robbers as soon as possible.

“The police command has started investigations. We have retrieved information about the possible whereabouts of the armed robbers and we are sure the police will soon arrest them.

“Most of the illegal miners have employed the services of armed macho men protecting their mining sites. We suspect that these armed macho men are behind these robberies because we are fighting galamsey and they are jobless as we speak. We have retrieved some of the guns from them but most of them still have them,” he said.
