A police officer, General Constable Oppong Damoah Seth, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen during the incident, which occurred at about 11:30 pm on Sunday, December 28, at the Karimenga Police Checkpoint. Two other officers sustained serious injuries.

According to police sources, the assailants initially ambushed a bus in the area, triggering a distress call. Police personnel who responded to the call reportedly managed to foil the attack, forcing the gunmen to flee into the surrounding bush.

However, the attackers later regrouped and returned to launch a second assault on the Karimenga Police checkpoint.

During the renewed attack, General Constable Oppong Damoah Seth, who was seated at the checkpoint, was shot in the head from behind and died instantly. Two other officers who returned fire were also shot in the legs.

The injured officers are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Walewale Municipal Hospital forced to discharge man who was assaulted for alleged attempted theft https://www.adomonline.com/walewale-municipal-hospital-forced-to-discharge-man-who-was-assaulted-for-alleged-attempted-theft/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 18:51:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608709 The Walewale Municipal Hospital has been compelled to discharge an assaulted patient after more than a week of unsuccessful attempts to reach his relatives, hospital authorities have confirmed.

The patient, 30-year-old Sambor Umar, was admitted with serious injuries following an assault in Wulugu in the North East Region, where he was accused of attempting theft.

Medical staff say he arrived unconscious on December 1 and required intensive care during his first few days of admission.

However, what began as a routine emergency case quickly escalated into a major welfare and logistical challenge for the facility.

Despite repeated phone calls and outreach attempts, the man’s family and community members allegedly refused to respond to the hospital’s invitations or take responsibility for his continued care.

A senior hospital administrator said all attempts to engage his relatives proved futile.

“He was brought here on Monday last week,” Senior Nurse Simon Jabik narrated.

“He was assaulted, and the ambulance brought him. When he came, he was unconscious with cutlass wounds on his body. We managed and resuscitated him, and he is a bit stable now. But we are struggling to get in contact with any family member so we can discharge him and send him back to his family.”

“He is now a challenge to us. Our ward is small; there is no space. We have people who need urgent care, and we don’t have space for them.”

The reasons behind the community’s refusal remain unclear, though hospital staff and a local social welfare officer say there are indications the man may have been disowned prior to the assault.

His elder brother reportedly refused to respond to the hospital’s calls, citing a previous incident in which he was arrested after standing surety for him in a theft case. The Assemblyman and the community chief also declined to intervene.

With no guardian available to take responsibility, and with limited resources to keep a non-critical patient indefinitely, hospital authorities say they had no choice but to discharge him.

The hospital is appealing to the Social Welfare Directorate to provide temporary accommodation or support services for the patient.

This decision follows recommendations from the North East Regional Security Council.

I was held hostage for 2 hours; my vehicle vandalized – North East Regional Minister https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-held-hostage-for-2-hours-my-vehicle-vandalized-north-east-regional-minister/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 10:15:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505197 North East Regional Minister, Tia Ibrahim, has opened up about an attack on him at the Walewale Palace following the imposition of a curfew amidst tensions and attacks in the area.

Residents have been expressing discontent with the 6 pm to 6 am curfew, asserting that it is an ineffective measure to address the underlying issues of insecurity and crime along the Bawku, Bolga, Walewale, and Tamale highways.

According to the Minister, his vehicle was vandalized, and he was held hostage at the Walewale Palace for over two hours on Saturday.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Ibrahim revealed he was engaging chiefs and relevant stakeholders about the curfew when the incident occurred.

“I was engaging the palace when the youth began massing up. They were outside pelting stones, and we could no longer contain it. My car was vandalized, and I was held hostage in the palace for more than two hours until a joint police and military team came in to rescue me. I had to leave because I was not safe,” he said.

Acknowledging that the escalating insecurity in the area was a result of the ongoing Bawku crisis, Mr. Ibrahim urged calm among residents while searching for lasting solutions.

“We had been managing this issue, but now there is a spillover. We should all tone down and continue the dialogue because there is no one side to this issue. The security agencies are there to enforce law and order,” he stated.

The Minister further emphasized the commitment of the Mahama-led administration to resolve the crisis, which has claimed over 50 lives.

“President Mahama is committed and has initiated peace talks, and if we are able to deal with that, there will be peace,” he noted.

Speaking on how long the curfew will last, Mr. Ibrahim added, “There is relative calm, and if it continues that way, we will engage the ministry to see how we can review it.”

Midway through the journey, they were ambushed by unknown armed men after making a stop in front of the ADB Bank in Walewale.

It is unclear what triggered the deadly attack but it has been linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict which has so far claimed the lives of over 50 people.

The latest ghastly incident follows another on February 11, 2025, where three passengers were killed, and their bus was set ablaze near Wulugu on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.

Witnesses claim the soldiers ordered people to lie face down before beating them with wire cans, while others were forced to roll on the ground and tortured with an object described as mesh wire.

Many victims suffered severe lacerations and fractures, with at least two receiving treatment from a traditional bone specialist.

The motive behind the rampage remains unclear, though a police source linked it to the recent burning of a truck transporting vegetables from Missiga to Kumasi, allegedly tied to the ongoing Bawku conflict.

Victims recounted harrowing experiences, stating that soldiers in armoured vehicles raided shops and gathering spots, forcing people to the ground and assaulting them with wire cans and gun butts.

Even workers at their shops and a group of NDC supporters resting in a pavilion were reportedly brutalised.

“I still don’t know why they beat me,” said a 34-year-old motorbike mechanic who, along with his customers, was attacked while working.

A 67-year-old NDC supporter accused the military commander of ordering the operation based on false allegations, denying any involvement in the arson attack on the truck.

He called on NDC leadership in the region to intervene and demand an investigation into the soldiers’ actions.

The incident has left the town reeling, with calls for accountability and justice for the victims growing louder.

The convict, Alhassan Abdulai, alias “Borga Lasco” is said to have lured the victim with GH₵10 and defiled her at a local eatery joint.

The court presided over by Francis Ayamwuni Asobayire on Thursday, January 9, 2025, and sentenced Abdulai after finding him guilty of the offense.

The facts of the case as presented in court are that the convict is from Langbinsi in the East Mamprusi Municipality but resides in Walewale plying his trade.

In October 2024, Abdulai who is a regular customer of a local eatery joint went to buy food and met only the victim at the joint.

He lured her with GH₵10, dragged her into a corner and defiled her. Unable to withstand the pain, the victim reported the incident to her parents who lodged a complaint at the police station.

He was subsequently arrested by the West Mamprusi Municipal Police Command and put before court.

The arrest follows an intelligence-led operation by the West Mamprusi Police Command.

The bags of cocoa beans are believed to have been transported from southern Ghana to the north ostensibly to be smuggled outside of Ghana as part of a syndicate that smuggles cocoa beans to neighbouring countries.

Acting on the tip-off, the police raided the private residence on Sunday, November 17, 2024, and confiscated the cocoa beans.

Graphic Online understands that a suspect, who was at the private residence initially obstructed the police by denying them access to the room where the cocoa beans were being stored.

The officers, however, forced their way into the premises and successfully confiscated the goods, Graphic Online gathered.

Police sources have told Graphic Online that the suspect has remained uncooperative, refusing to disclose critical details, including how the goods were transported to Walewale and the intended smuggling route.

The seized goods are now in police custody as investigations continue.

The incident comes on the back of recent reports of smuggling of cocoa beans from Ghana to neighbouring countries.

This development follows a recent ruling by the High Court in Tamale, which ordered a re-run of the Walewale constituency parliamentary primary.

The court cited irregularities, impersonation, and over-voting as reasons for nullifying the previous election.

In light of the court’s decision, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua announced on Monday afternoon that the party has scheduled the re-run.

The nomination period will open on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, and close on Thursday, September 5, with the election set to take place on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

Walewale NPP primaries: Why court annulled results https://www.adomonline.com/walewale-npp-primaries-why-court-annulled-results/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 20:26:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2442967 Early on Monday morning, a high court in Tamale delivered a judgement annulling the NPP parliamentary primaries held in January this year.

In the controversial election, a staffer at the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama won by a narrow margin, defeating the incumbent MP, Hajia Lariba Abudu, with just 7 votes.

However, the MP immediately rejected the results and filed a writ at the High Court alleging incontrovertible irregularities, including wrongful determination of spoilt ballots, over voting and participation in the election by people who had died.

In her reliefs, Hajia Abudu sought, among other reliefs, that the court annuals the results of the January primaries, or alternatively, should order a recount and validate spoilt ballots, which the plaintiff believed, many were her votes, but wrongly declared spoilt.

Summary of Judgment

Presided over by His Lordship Richard Mac Kogyapwah, a Justice of the Court of Appeal sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court Judge, the court ruled in favour of the plaintiff (the incumbent MP) granting three of her reliefs.

In effect, the court agreed with the plaintiff that the January election was fraught with irregularities and flagrant violations of the electoral rules and regulations such as the participation of dead delegates, impersonation, and multiple voting in the polls for which reason the said elections are of no legal effect and are null and void.

The three reasons or reliefs the court granted to the plaintiff (incumbent MP) and leading to the ultimate annulment are as follows:

1. A declaration that the results of the New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary Primaries of the Walewale Constituency held on the 27th of January, 2024 were illegally declared by an unknown person who was not the officially assigned Electoral Commission official at a time when the controversy surrounding the 19 spoilt ballots had not been resolved thereby impugning the integrity of the purported results.

2. A declaration that the 27th January 2024 NPP’s Parliamentary Primaries in the Walewale Constituency was shrouded in irregularities and flagrant violations of the electoral rules and regulations such as overvoting and the participation of dead delegates in the polls for which reason the said elections are of no legal effect and are null and void.

3. An order of the court annulling the purported results of the 27th January 2024 NPP Parliamentary Primaries in the Walewale Constituency and a further order for a re-run of the said elections.

Abandoned Reliefs

In the writ, the Plaintiff also had alternative reliefs, and in the course of proceedings, she abandoned the following reliefs:

1. An order of the Court for the ballots to be brought to court and recounted and where the ballots have been tampered with or cannot be procured an order for the re-run of the polls.

2. A declaration that when the 19 alleged spoiled ballots are scrutinised properly some of those ballots are valid votes in favour of the Plaintiff and when added to the valid votes cast in Plaintiff’s favour, Plaintiff will emerge as the winner of the polls.

Full reasoned judgment will be delivered on 12th September 2024.

NPP gets greenlight to settle Walewale primary dispute out of court https://www.adomonline.com/npp-gets-greenlight-to-settle-walewale-primary-dispute-out-of-court/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 05:29:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2374218 The Tamale High Court on Wednesday granted pleas by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to settle its Walewale parliamentary primary dispute out of court.

This follows a court session on March 15, during which the party asked the court to dismiss the case, but their request was turned down and fined GH¢8000.

The incumbent MP, Lariba Zuweira Abudu filed the case against her close contender, Dr Abdul-Karibu Tia Mahama after losing the election on January 28, 2024.

Dr Mahama, a presidential staffer won with 343 votes, while Madam Abudu who doubles as the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection secured 334.

Dissatisfied with the outcome, the first-time MP has filed an ex-parte motion in a Tamale High Court challenging the results.

She sought a restraining order against the winner from holding himself as the NPP parliamentary candidate-elect for constituency.

But on Wednesday, the court heeded their plea with the parties expected to return on May 23.

In an interview after the hearing, NPP Director of Elections Evans Nimako said they were grateful to the court.

“We’ve appealed to the court to allow the party to resolve it in-house after which we will come back to report our terms of resolution. The party’s leadership in its entirety is here to ensure that we have peace in Walewale constituency.”

“Internal elections are internal elections and we’ve always done it. We always have a way of resolving our issues after which we submit candidates for elections. We’re looking forward to a bigger picture of winning the 2024 elections,” he told Citi News.

He added, “Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is from the constituency…so we are doing everything possible within the party’s means to ensure that we have a party in Walewale that is going to win the seat and also ensure that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes the next president come January 7, 2025.”

The drivers say the attack is the latest in series of incidents that have threatened their livelihood and made them scared of transporting passengers to Bawku and other parts of the North.

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for the persons who shot into the bus and set it ablaze. One person was killed and several others were injured in the attack.

The incident has caused panic among the drivers at the Suame bus terminal, who say they are now being targeted by people who want to prevent them from travelling to Bawku and other areas of the North.

One of the Chairmen at the bus terminal, Anasara George Akolgo, says the incident has left drivers devastated.

“All of us were very shocked by what happened in Walewale because we had loaded the bus yesterday evening bound for Bawku, and it was attacked in Walewale and the people even followed the bus to the police station and burnt it, and we don’t understand why anytime there is a problem in Bawku, then the Walewale people begin to misbehave with us.

“We have suspended services to Bawku, and we want the government and the IGP to step in and solve it amicably because what is happening is intimidation to us because most of the drivers are panicking.”

He also alleged that some people are now going from one station to the other tracking travellers to Bawku and attacking them during the journey.

Walewale residents live in fear over robberies https://www.adomonline.com/walewale-residents-live-in-fear-over-robberies/ Thu, 12 Jan 2023 10:14:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2203993 Residents of Walewale and its environs in the West Mamprusi municipality in the North East Region are living in constant fear following incessant armed robbery and other criminal attacks in the area.

The incidents have resulted in the loss of lives and life-threatening injuries over the past months.

The police in the area appear helpless, as they complain about the lack of the necessary logistics to deal with the menace.

Mobile money vendors, motorbike riders, commuters and market women are the biggest prey of the robbers.

Residents said the municipality had become a safe haven for the criminals, many of whom hid in uncompleted structures and bushes to track down their victims, particularly in areas such as Kukua-zugu, Wulugu and Sayoo.

Walewale, which is a major transit point with an active night life, has now been turned into a ghost town after 9 p.m. due to the now common robbery cases.

No patrol vehicles

Sources told the Daily Graphic that the local police command lacked basic logistics and personnel to fight the menace.

The command is said to have only one patrol vehicle for operational duties, with a number of its vehicles broken down for some time now.

The source said, “we are just helpless; all our patrol vehicles have broken down, so we have only one vehicle, which is not enough for operations”.

Latest incidents

In the opening two weeks of the year alone, four persons have been killed in as many robbery adventures, with others injured, some seriously, in the escapades.

On January 1, 2023, two suspected armed robbers were lynched by the residents of Sayoo, a suburb of Walewale.

The two were part of a gang that opened fire on a bus, with registration number AC 393-22, which was travelling from Bawku in the Upper East Region to Accra, when the bus reached the community.

Another robber was shot dead in a separate case, while two others sustained injuries in a similar robbery attack at the outskirts of Walewale along the Walewale-Tamale road last Thursday.

Some residents who spoke to the Daily Graphic expressed worry about the increasing spate of robbery attacks in the area and said the menace was taking a toll on their lives because it had created fear and panic among them, particularly traders and road users.

“In fact, there is insecurity in the town and everybody is living in fear. Armed robbers always attack and rob people of their valuables; some people have even lost their lives through robbery attacks,” a resident of Walewale, Shaibu Alhassan, said.

Another resident, Amina Yussif, called on the police to strengthen security in the area to curb crimes and ensure the safety of the residents.

MUSEC meeting

The Chief Executive of the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly, Issahaku Aremeyaw Somo, said the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) was convening a meeting to deliberate on measures to clamp down on the menace.

He, meanwhile, appealed to the residents to support the security agencies to fight the robbery by volunteering relevant information that would assist the police to investigate and apprehend suspects.

The suspect, Solomon Awunibiliga, is said to have abducted the girl from Walewale and absconded.

The suspect, Solomon Awunibiliga, is reported to have kidnapped the young child to Mirigu, a farming community in the Kasena-Nakana Municipality in the Upper East Region where he was apprehended after police received intelligence.

The victim is said to have gone missing two weeks ago after she went to school and did not return home.

Her disappearance caused fear and panic at Walewale, as relatives and friends explore every nook and cranny of the municipality but efforts proved futile.

Confirming the news to Graphic Online, the North East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Robert Annabik Anmain, said the suspect was picked up at his hideout at Mirigu.

He has since been detained in custody at Walewale to assist with investigations.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the mother of the suspect was said to have asked him to get her a grandchild before she died, otherwise he should never step foot at her funeral ground.

To satisfy the demands of his mother, the suspect reportedly visited Walewale and lured the child who had closed from school and was returning home.

“Our investigations so far revealed that he (the suspect) met the child returning from school and he lured her that he was taking her to her mother but boarded a vehicle and took her to his village called Mirigu in the Kasena-Nankana Municipality in the Upper East Region,” he said.

According to him, the police are still investigating the matter and that the suspect had been charged with child stealing and would be processed for court.

ASP Anmain indicated that the child had since reunited with her family after a medical check-up at the Walewale Municipal Hospital.

He further expressed concern over the increasing spate of kidnapping cases in the region.

He advised parents to be wary of unknown individuals parading in their communities.

There have been growing incidents of kidnap-for-ransom in the region which have become a major security threat in the area.

Last year, about 10 cases of kidnapping were recorded in the region, with most of the cases happening at Mamprugu/Moaduri.

E-levy: We don’t want it today or tomorrow – Walewale residents tell Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/e-levy-we-dont-want-it-today-or-tomorrow-walewale-residents-tell-bawumia/ Tue, 01 Feb 2022 13:36:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2074178 Some residents of Walewale in the North East Region have called on the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to intervene and stop the passage of the E-levy Bill.

Noting the electronic transaction, particularly mobile money services, as the means of safeguarding their capital, the residents said the levy’s passage will have adverse implications, including the collapse of their businesses.

Speaking to JoyNews, a fridge technician, Hamidu Abakar, said implementing the levy will put pressure on his little income.

“As for the E-levy, we don’t want it today; we don’t want it tomorrow. So we want the Vice President, [Dr Bawumia] to come out and tell the Majority to stop pushing for it,” he stated.

One Civil Servant, Mohammed Rabiw, believed that the tax policy is regressive and should be aborted immediately.

“It [E-levy] is not the solution to Ghana’s problems. Are they [government] telling us that they will not add extra taxes next year if they pass this levy? I think they are just finding the easiest way out.

“Our senior brother, Dr Bawumia, has even said that it is not good to tax MoMo, so are we saying that all that he was telling us were lies?” he quizzed.

Adding his voice, a former Northern Region Minister, Abubakari Abdallah, sent what he described as “an important word” to Dr Bawumia.

According to him, the Walewale constituency is a prime location for armed robbers, especially on market days; thus, traders can secure their business capital by saving it on mobile money.

In view of that, imposing the 1.75% tax will only intensify the hardships of these traders.

“When market women travel to and from the big markets in the region, they are rampantly attacked by robbers where they lose their capital. The only haven for these women is to elude the robbers by saving on their momo wallets.

ALSO READ:

“So if the policy is good for everyone in Ghana, I would want to remind my big brother that tax is not good for his people in the Walewale area, so he should reconsider,” he intimated.

He further noted that the desperate attempt to impose the tax policy on the citizenry exposes the government’s incompetence.

“Nobody needs to tell you that this government is desperate. They have mismanaged the economy, and their performance so far is so abysmal and appalling that they have decided to look everywhere and anywhere for money,” he said.
