Ghana has been drawn into Group A alongside regional rivals Nigeria and Benin.

Speaking to the Ghana Football Association’s media team, Salifu acknowledged the strength of the group and the intensity of the upcoming matches.

“We have been waiting keenly to see which countries we would face in the group stage, and just today, we got the information that the draw has been done — and we got Nigeria and Benin in our group,” the former Heart of Lions coach said.

“Which I think is a typical WAFU group. When Ghana and Nigeria are in the same group, we normally expect a very tough competition.

“So, Ghana, Benin and Nigeria — I think it’s a very good group, and of course, all we have to do is to beat these two countries and qualify.”

Following their recent elimination from the U-20 AFCON qualifiers after a quarter-final loss to Egypt, Salifu said the team is focused on bouncing back.

“After exiting Egypt, we returned home and came straight into camp. We have a tournament at hand, and we believe it’s time to redeem our image,” he added.

WAFU U-20: We’ll redeem ourselves after World Cup miss – Black Satellites coach https://www.adomonline.com/wafu-u-20-well-redeem-ourselves-after-world-cup-miss-black-satellites-coach/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 11:39:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547307 Assistant coach of the Black Satellites, Fatawu Salifu, has expressed the team’s strong determination to restore their reputation following their failure to qualify for the U-20 World Cup.

Ghana’s U-20 side saw their World Cup hopes dashed after a penalty shootout loss to Egypt in the quarterfinals of the recent qualifying tournament.

However, as they prepare for the upcoming U-20 WAFU Championship, Salifu emphasized the team’s commitment to making their supporters proud.

“Right before we returned from Egypt and after not qualifying for the World Cup, we got the information that we are going to play in the WAFU Cup, which is going to be in Ghana. We believe that we are back to redeem our image after exiting from the tournament in Egypt,” the former Heart of Lions coach told the Ghana FA website.

The Black Satellites will kick off their WAFU campaign against long-time rivals Nigeria on July 10, 2025, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. They will then face Benin on July 16 to complete their group stage matches.

Group A consists of only three teams, with each team scheduled to play two games.

The third edition of the WAFU Zone B U-20 Cup of Nations is set to take place in Ghana from July 10 to 23, 2025.
