This follows the abrupt suspension of proceedings on Wednesday, February 5, initially attributed to a directive from Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.

However, it was later clarified that the decision came from the Clerk of Parliament without the Speaker’s knowledge.

Speaking on Joy FM on Thursday, February 6, the Ho West MP confirmed that Speaker Bagbin has now instructed the committee to proceed with its work.

“I need to meet with my committee members this morning. We agreed to have a meeting at 3 O’clock, by which time I would have received some information from the Speaker. So, for today, there won’t be any public hearings. We will continue tomorrow [Friday, February 7],” Mr. Bedzrah stated.

“The Speaker called and said, ‘No, we cannot stop this work. We should continue,’ and he has given direct instructions to the Clerk that we should proceed,” he added.

Parliament’s Special Committee, established to investigate the disturbances during the Appointments Committee sittings on January 30 and 31, has commenced its first public hearing.

The seven-member committee, chaired by Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, MP for Ho West, has been tasked with examining the incident and is expected to submit its findings within 10 days.

Chairman Bedzrah assured that the committee’s mandate is not to target or witch-hunt any Member of Parliament or member of the public.

He urged individuals with multimedia footage of the chaotic scenes to submit them to the committee, as the evidence will aid in their investigation and fact-finding process.
