A video captured and posted on Twitter showed the two vendors on the school’s campus engaged in a fistfight over a customer who only wanted to buy water.

In a bid to get their money from the gentleman, each tried to draw his attention to their wares, leading to an eventual grudge and then blows set in.

As usual, students were cheering the two ‘women wrestlers’ as though it was a boxing bout with an award at stake.

According to them, they cannot always afford to buy meat or fish on their food but that should not be a reason for being denied soup, stew or pepper.

One of the residents, sharing his experience with Adom News, said “I once bought fufu without meat; the woman just gave me the food raw, so I asked her, how can I eat the food without soup? And she told me they use their soup to sell their meat.”

Another said “I have also experienced the same thing – the vendor told me the economy is hard so they cannot give out their soup and run at a lost.”

In response, some food vendors have explained that they understand that times are hard, but they cannot also give away all the soup and stew for the meat to be left unsold.

Some say they try to give soup and stew free sometimes but that is a risk they take.

Meanwhile, some residents in Kumasi say the story is different over there because in Kumasi “when you buy rice they give you free stew, free beans and even some other stuff for free.”

Speaking to Joy News, Joshua Amartey convener of the group said, “they [Fan Milk Limited] brought a letter that indicated that the company’s profit is reducing because of the high cost of production”.

He stated the company is cheating them explaining that the decrease in the profit will reduce their earnings from 17pesewas to 16pesewas.

“It is not even up to 20pesewas, which can buy sachet water. If the cost of production is high they should increase the price of the product and not our benefits” he grieved.

The other workers said the decision of the company is unfair.

They stated that they had previously asked the company for an increase in their profit from 17 to 20 pesewas, however, the company refused their request.

They explained that the 17pesewas on each product is not enough as benefit and a reduction is going to leave them with nothing.

They claim when they get involved in accidents the bikes are fixed with money from insurance but they have to use their own money to take care of themselves.

When asked if they have communicated some of these problems to the company Mr. Joshua said, “when we go to them with our grievances, they say they do not know us but they know the agents. And when we go to the agents they also say do not know us”.

Mr Amartey said the vendors have stopped working from Friday, October 5, until they get a solid feedback from the management of the company.

The officers have also begun sensitising residents to abide by good sanitary practices to avoid contracting cholera and other transmitted diseases.

This is part of proactive measures city authorities have adopted to avert a possible cholera outbreak in the metropolis.

The concerns come after the Ghana Health Service issued a cholera alert and urged all its regional directorates to step up their surveillance to forestall a possible outbreak of the disease.

Speaking to Class News, the Deputy Environmental Health Officer at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Eric Gyasi, advised residents to stop buying from vendors who sell at dirty places.

He also warned that the assembly would soon go after food vendors who flout its sanitation laws.
