The recent victory of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency stands as a testament to the power of organized youth engagement.

A contributing factor to this success was the Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN) of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) whose members demonstrated exceptional commitment and strategic involvement.

TEIN serves as the intellectual wing of the NDC, aiming to empower students to engage in politics and advocate for youth interests. Historically, TEIN has been instrumental in mobilizing support for the NDC during elections.

In previous elections, such as those in 2016 and 2020, TEIN’s efforts were crucial in rallying students to register and vote for NDC candidates. Their active participation not only increased voter turnout but also enhanced the party’s visibility among young voters.

This article highlights the pivotal role TEIN UMaT played during the 2024 election to secure the victory of both the parliamentary candidate; Hon Issah Salifu Taylor and the presidential candidate; H.E John Dramani Mahama.

One of TEIN UMaT’s most effective strategies was the door-to-door campaign in the Nkamponase electoral area. In alliance with the Nkamponase electoral area executives, this grassroots approach allowed members to engage directly with voters, fostering personal connections and addressing concerns about local issues. TEIN UMaT members visited homes, engaging old and young voters as well as floating voters in conversations about the NDC’s policies and achievements.

This personal touch was vital in building trust within the community people and ensuring that voters felt heard and valued. Many constituents expressed appreciation for this direct engagement, which contrasted with traditional campaign methods that often lacked personal interaction.
Through their door-to-door efforts, TEIN UMaT managed to convince and establish a rapport with voters that translated into increased support for the NDC. By actively listening to constituents’ concerns and providing tailored responses, they successfully mobilized community members to participate in the electoral process.

In addition to their outreach efforts in Nkamponase, TEIN UMaT organized extensive campaign activities on campus, which saw the Deputy National Youth Organizer; Osman Ayariga gracing the occasion to mobilize students and faculty alike to support the NDC. TEIN members held campus invasion outreach, discussions, and workshops aimed at educating fellow students about the importance of participating in elections. These activities were crucial for fostering a politically aware student body that understood both local and national issues.

Recognizing the influence of digital platforms, TEIN UMaT utilized social media to amplify its message. They created engaging content that highlighted critical issues affecting young voters while encouraging them to share information within their networks as well as educate other student voters. This strategy effectively reached a broader audience and fostered a sense of collective action among students.

TEIN UMaT members participated in sessions where they were guided through the vote transfer process. Information was provided on deadlines and requirements, ensuring that members could successfully register their votes in their new constituency. This ensured that many students who might have otherwise been disenfranchised were able to participate fully in the electoral process hence increasing voter participation among students who had relocated to Tarkwa for studies.

A significant aspect of TEIN UMaT’s contribution was the recruitment of 70 members as party agents on Election Day. This strategic move ensured that the NDC had a robust and intelligent presence at polling stations throughout the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency. They underwent comprehensive training to prepare them for their roles as party agents, learned about electoral processes, how to monitor voting activities effectively, and how to address any irregularities that might arise during polling. This preparation ensured that they could represent the party competently and confidently. On Election Day, these agents served as vital links between voters and party leadership. Their presence at polling stations helped ensure transparency and integrity throughout the voting process. By monitoring activities closely, they could address any issues immediately, contributing significantly to a smooth electoral process.

The commitment displayed by TEIN UMaT members extended beyond local engagement; many travelled from distant locations such as; Yendi, Wa, Yeji, Sandema, Kumasi, Accra and other towns across the length and breadth of the country to participate actively in electioneering processes as polling station agents, collating agents and voters. This level of dedication is commendable; it reflects a deep commitment not only to their party but also to democratic principles. By travelling long distances, these students showcased their belief in the importance of every vote and every voice being heard.

In conclusion, the unwavering dedication and strategic approach of TEIN UMaT not only mobilized their peers but also fostered a sense of unity and purpose within the constituency. By actively participating in the electoral process, these students have set a powerful example for their contemporaries, illustrating how young people can effect real change in their communities. Their efforts have not only bolstered the NDC’s position but have also empowered fellow students and residents to engage meaningfully in democratic processes.

The milestone chocked by TEIN UMaT towards the NDC victory in Tarkwa Nsuaem wouldn’t be possible without the help from notable individuals in the region. Management of the school has suspended the 2020/2021 second semester examination.

A statement, signed by the Registrar of UMaT, M. K. Okrah, said following the withdrawal of teaching and related activities by UTAG, the exam has been suspended indefinitely until further notice.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Sulemanu Koney, said the project was the first major project of the Chamber’s Tertiary Education Fund (TEF) to help create a more conducive ambiance for research and learning.

Speaking at the ceremony at Tarkwa, Mr Koney said the estimated cost of the project was  $1.21 million and should be ready within two years.

The facility will be equipped with smart classroom facilities with modern equipment with all ICT and other e-learning tools and well-equipped offices for lecturers.

UMaT

He said UMaT remained an essential institution in the training of requisite human resources for the mining industry and other relevant sectors of the economy.

“The university’s contribution to the training of professionals and researchers in the minerals sector means that it continues to attract more and more young people who see engineering as a career path worthy to be charted,” he said.

The project

The project, Mr Koney said, came as a positive development, at a point where the university’s facilities had been stretched to their limits.

“It is for this reason that the Ghana Chamber of Mines set up the TEF in 2019 to improve the experience of teaching and learning in the university for the first five years of the fund,” he added.

Mr Koney assured member companies of the chamber, whose benevolence had made it possible for the realisation of the TEF, that the project would mark the beginning of a stronger partnership with UMaT.

“We are certain that the TEF would become the yardstick for setting up similar funds across universities in the country and the sub-region to give the needed support for the development of the needed human resource for national development.

Local content

Mr Koney also commended the management of the university for their contribution to the industry and that the chamber would continue to support in positioning UMaT as the centre for human capital development for mining.

He said to show the sector’s commitment to the local content, the chamber went through a rigorous process of selecting a wholly-owned Ghanaian company to execute the project.

Commendation

The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Tertiary Education Fund, Stephen Ndede, said a key aspect of TEF’s mandate was to support faculty members and post-graduate students to undertake research pertinent to the mining industry.

“Processes are underway to ensure effective implementation of this programme. It is our expectation that the studies produced will be the basis for innovation and technological advancement in Ghana’s mining industry,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the UMaT, Prof. Richard Kwasi Amankwah, commended the chamber for its effort and that the facility would help the university greatly.

The ceremony was also attended by the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Eric Asubonteng, the management of the university, various faculties, as well as members of the TEF governing board.
