Starmer reportedly argued that, instead of focusing on past injustices, countries affected by slavery should prioritize current issues, such as climate challenges.

Speaking to reporters on a flight to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHGM) in Samoa, Starmer stressed the importance of supporting Commonwealth nations with immediate needs.

“In all the conversations I’ve had with them, what they’re most interested in is… working with international institutions… on the sorts of packages they need right now in relation to the challenges they’re facing right now.”

Starmer further noted, “That’s where I’m going to put my focus rather than what will end up being very long, endless discussions about reparations on the past.”

In response, Gabby Otchere-Darko, via a post on X on October 24, 2024, condemned the Prime Minister’s stance, calling it “a disgraceful dismissive attitude from the leader of an island nation that best benefited from the crime of slavery.”

Akufo-Addo congratulates new UK Prime Minister https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-congratulates-new-uk-prime-minister/ Wed, 26 Oct 2022 10:14:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2175998 President Nana Akufo-Addo has sent congratulatory messages to the new British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.

Mr Sunak was elected after Liz Truss’ resignation last week after 45 days in office.

Her resignation comes after a key minister quit and Tory MPs rebelled in a chaotic parliamentary vote.

Ms Truss was elected by the Tory membership in September, but she lost authority after series of U-turns.

In a post on his official Twitter page, President Akufo-Addo was optimistic that Mr Sunak’s tenure in office will see stronger bonds between Ghana and the UK.

“Warm congratulations to Rt. Hon. Rishi Sunak, MP, on becoming the 57th British Prime Minister in this difficult period of his country’s and the world’s fortunes.

“I am hopeful that his tenure of office will strengthen and deepen even further the ties of co-operation, collaboration and friendship between Ghana and Great Britain, and provide us with the platform to create progress and prosperity for our respective peoples,” he tweeted.

Born of Indian descent, he will be the UK’s first British Asian prime minister and the youngest in recent history.

His father, Yashvir, was born in Kenya and his mother, Usha, was born in Tanzania following which they migrated to the UK in the 1960s.

Liz Truss: A quick guide to why the Prime Minister resigned https://www.adomonline.com/liz-truss-a-quick-guide-to-why-the-prime-minister-resigned/ Thu, 20 Oct 2022 14:41:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2174117 Liz Truss has resigned as the UK’s prime minister after six weeks. Here’s what you need to know about her if you don’t regularly follow politics.

She was the shortest serving UK prime minister

Liz Truss replaced Boris Johnson as leader and became PM on 6 September then resigned 45 days later. The previous record was set at 119 days by George Canning who died in office in 1827.

She ran into problems very quickly

With her support, finance minster Kwasi Kwarteng unveiled £45bn of tax cuts in her third week, in what they called a “mini-budget”. But it was widely blamed for causing huge economic problems. Almost all of it has now been reversed and Kwarteng was sacked as chancellor.

Some of her own MPs started openly criticising her

Dozens of Tories called on her to step down and her Home Secretary Suella Braverman resigned. She had to hire former rivals Grant Shapps and Jeremy Hunt to plug the gaps in her top team.

She said she couldn’t deliver what she had promised

In her resignation speech outside Downing Street, she said: “I recognise that I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”

She beat former Chancellor Rishi Sunak to be PM

Only Conservative MPs and party members got to vote to make her leader. Sunak came ahead in the MPs vote but in the final vote from members more than 80,000 picked her instead of Sunak, making her the winner.

We don’t know who will replace her

There will be a leadership contest within the next week. She will stay on as leader until her replacement is announced.

She was the last PM appointed by Queen Elizabeth II

The Queen appointed Liz Truss days before she died and her leadership began with a 10-day mourning period.

She used to work as an economist

After university she worked for Shell and Cable & Wireless, and married accountant Hugh O’Leary in 2000. They have two daughters. The family live in Thetford, Norfolk.

Kwasi Kwarteng’s letter to UK Prime Minister after his sack and her reply https://www.adomonline.com/kwasi-kwartengs-letter-to-uk-prime-minister-after-his-sack-and-her-reply/ Sat, 15 Oct 2022 13:14:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2172161 Kwasi Kwarteng has been sacked as chancellor. Here is his letter to Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Dear Prime Minister,

You have asked me to stand aside as your chancellor. I have accepted.

When you asked me to serve as your chancellor, I did so in full knowledge that the situation we faced was incredibly difficult, with rising global interest rates and energy prices. However, your vision of optimism, growth and change was right.

As I have said many times in the past weeks, following the status quo was simply not an option. For too long this country has been dogged by low growth rates and high taxation – that must still change if this country is to succeed.

The economic environment has changed rapidly since we set out the Growth Plan on 23 September. In response, together with the Bank of England and excellent officials at the Treasury we have responded to those events, and I commend my officials for their dedication.

It is important now as we move forward to emphasise your government’s commitment to fiscal discipline. The Medium-Term Fiscal Plan is crucial to this end, and I look forward to supporting you and my successor to achieve that from the backbenches.

We have been colleagues and friends for many years. In that time, I have seen your dedication and determination. I believe your vision is the right one. It has been an honour to serve as your first chancellor.

Your success is this country’s success and I wish you well.

The prime minister responded as follows:

Dear Kwasi,

Thank you for your letter. As a long-standing friend and colleague, I am deeply sorry to lose you from the Government.

We share the same vision for our country and the same firm conviction to go for growth.

You have been Chancellor in extraordinarily challenging times in the face of severe global headwinds.

The Energy Price Guarantee and the Energy Bill Relief Scheme, which made up the largest part of the mini budget, will stand as one of the most significant fiscal interventions in modern times.

Thanks to your intervention, families will be able to heat their homes this winter and thousands of jobs and livelihoods will be saved.

You have cut taxes for working people by legislating this week to scrap the increase in National Insurance Contributions.

You have set in train an ambitious set of supply-side reforms that this Government will proudly take forward.

These include new investment zones to unleash the potential of parts of our country that have been held back for too long and the removal of EU regulations to help British businesses succeed in the global economy.

I deeply respect the decision you have taken today. You have put the national interest first.

I know that you will continue to support the mission that we share to deliver a low-tax, high wage, high growth economy that can transform the prosperity of our country for generations to come.

Thank you for your service to this country and your huge friendship and support. I have no doubt you will continue to make a major contribution to public life in the years ahead.

UK Prime Minister being investigated over luxury £15,000 Caribbean holiday https://www.adomonline.com/uk-prime-minister-being-investigated-over-luxury-15000-caribbean-holiday/ Tue, 11 May 2021 15:17:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1957928 United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is being investigated for a possible breach of Commons rules over a luxury £15,000 Christmas holiday in the Caribbean.

The parliamentary commissioner for standards has powers that can trigger suspensions of Members of Parliament (MPs)– or even by-elections – if serious breaches have occurred.

The list of MPs under investigation had been kept under wraps during the campaign for the May elections, but has now been revealed by Kathryn Stone, the independent commissioner.

Her list reveals she is looking into the mystery of who funded the prime minister’s luxury Caribbean holiday on the island of Mustique, during Christmas 2019.

At the time, Mr Johnson claimed the £15,000 cost of the villa he stayed in was paid for by David Ross, a Tory party donor and former deputy chairman of Carphone Warehouse, who owns a property on the island.

But Mr Ross then denied he had paid for the holiday and said he did not own the villa where Mr Johnson and his fiancée, Carrie Symonds, stayed.

MORE:

However, the commissioner does not appear to be acting on a complaint submitted by the Labour MP Margaret Hodge, over who originally paid for Mr Johnson’s expensive flat renovations.

Mr Johnson has repeatedly failed to deny that the Conservative Party, or multiple Tory donors, paid out for works that could have cost up to £200,000.

And the Electoral Commission also launched an investigation, saying “an offence or offences may have occurred”.

It is the first time a serving Prime Minister has been investigated by the commissioner, who is responsible for regulating MPs’ conduct and adherence to parliamentary rules.

Ms Stone is also investigating seven other Conservative MPs – former cabinet ministers Owen Paterson and Theresa Villiers, plus Adam Holloway, Bob Stewart, Natalie Elphicke, Roger Gale and Jonathan Gullis.

Claudia Webbe, elected as a Labour MP in 2019 but suspended from the party in September 2020 after being charged with harassment of a woman, is also under investigation.

Labour seized on the probe into the Prime Minister’s holiday, deputy leader Angela Rayner saying: “Another day, another investigation into Boris Johnson for more sleaze and dodgy dealings.

“The public have a right to know who paid for Boris Johnson’s luxury Caribbean holiday and the renovation of his flat. Most importantly, we need to know what these donors were promised or expected in return for their generosity.”

However, Labour’s attempts to puncture Tory support at last week’s elections by focusing on “sleaze” are acknowledged to have failed by all sides.

The announcement says Mr Johnson is being investigated under “Paragraph 14 of the Code of Conduct” relating to “Registration of interest under Category 4 of the Guide to the rules [Visits outside the UK] in 2020”.

A spokesman for Mr Ross said: “Mr Ross facilitated accommodation for Mr Johnson on Mustique valued at £15,000.

“Therefore this is a benefit in kind from Mr Ross to Mr Johnson, and Mr Johnson’s declaration to the House of Commons is correct.”

Mr Johnson’s spokesman said: “The prime minister transparently declared the benefit in kind in the Commons register of interests.

“Clearly the rules are set out and it’s important that everyone abides by them, as the prime minister has done throughout.”

Boris Johnson breaks silence after testing positive [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/boris-johnson-breaks-silence-after-testing-positive-video/ Fri, 27 Mar 2020 13:51:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1770727 United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has tested positive for coronavirus and has taken to social media to confirm the news in a short video.

In a video fast-circulating on social media, the Prime Ministers said he will continue to lead his technical team via technology to fight the coronavirus though he has self-isolated.

MORE:

His words captured in the video were:

I have developed mild symptoms of the coronavirus, that’s to say, i have temperature and a mild cough and on the advise of the Chief Medical Officer, i have taken a test that has come out positive so i am working from home and self-isolating and that’s the right thing to do.

But, be in no doubt that. i can continue, thanks to technology, to communicate with all my top team to lead the fight back against the coronavirus.

I wanna thank whoever is involved, especially the NHS, the police, socialcare workers, teachers, the national effort and every public member who is volunteering to take part in the fight against it.

We will get through it and the way is by applying the measures we have heard so much about. The more we comply, the faster our country will pass through the epidemic and bounce back.

Work from home so we stopped the epidemic, that is the way, protect the NHS and save lives by staying at home.
