Drawing direct inspiration from the iconic Men’s TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations trophy, the new design represents more than a piece of silverware; it is a celebration of equality, unity, and excellence.

The launch of the new trophy forms part of CAF leadership’s goal of developing and growing Women’s Football in Africa and making African Women’s Football amongst the best in the world.

The new trophy was celebrated on Wednesday night at an event hosted by CAF and long-term partner, TotalEnergies in Casablanca, Morocco.

A Design Rooted in Symbolism and Purpose

The trophy’s striking design, features identical petals spiralling upward, each one representing a participating national team. Together, they form the shape of a blooming flower, a timeless symbol of growth, empowerment, and beauty.

This imagery captures the journey of African women’s football and the vibrant strength of its athletes.

Emerging from the heart of this elegant floral form is a golden sphere, patterned subtly as a football. Adorned with a shiny gold map of Africa, the sphere reflects the continent’s ambition, pride, and global impact in the women’s game.

Crafted in brilliant silver and matte gold, the body of the trophy is wrapped in a gold ring engraved with the CAF logo, affirming the confederation’s steadfast commitment to elevating the women’s game across all 54 member associations.

The base, a pristine white marble pedestal with elegant gold-accented stripes, bears the name of the competition in refined matte gold lettering, cementing the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations legacy within the rich tapestry of African sport.

A New Era for Women’s Football in Africa

As the next generation of African stars prepare to shine at the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2024, this new trophy will serve as a beacon of aspiration, inspiring millions of young girls across the continent to dream, to believe, and to achieve on the global stage.

The unveiling ceremony took place on Thursday, May 21, at the TotalEnergies headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The event follows the recent renewal of the sponsorship agreement between CAF and TotalEnergies, which will see the energy giant remain a key partner of CAF’s Interclub competitions for another four years.

In attendance were celebrated African football legends, as well as representatives from the two finalist clubs—Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids FC.

The trophy reveal comes just days before the highly anticipated first leg of the CAF Champions League final, set for Friday, May 24, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, with kickoff at 13:00 GMT. The second leg will be held on Saturday, June 1, at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.

The launch of the new trophy marks an exciting new era for African club football, as CAF intensifies efforts to enhance the global appeal and prestige of its Interclub tournaments.

Despite a challenging start with just one point from two matches, the Black Stars find themselves at the bottom of Group B with a point.

Ghana kicked off their campaign with a disappointing 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, followed by a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Egypt.

Reflecting on their performance after the recent draw with the record-holding team on Thursday night, the West Ham United attacker emphasized the team’s ambition to be crowned champions, despite the initial setbacks.

Kudus stated, “The ultimate goal for all of us is to lift the trophy, but the sub-goal is to get out of the group, so the focus is on one game at a time.”

Acknowledging the challenges, he added, “Like I said, the ultimate goal is to win the trophy that is the aim we came here with, but we can’t look far ahead of us, so we just need to take it one game at a time.”

Ghana will wrap up their group game in a must-win encounter against Mozambique on Monday, January 22, at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, with the kick-off scheduled at 20:00 GMT.

The Black Stars are determined to break a 42-year trophy drought in the AFCON competition.

The visit took place on Thursday, January 6, 2022.

It was to afford the winners an opportunity to officially inform the President about their victory in the fierce contest which ended on Friday, November 26, 2021.

Among the delegation were school authorities, representatives from Primetime who are the production team, and the Quiz Mistress, Prof Elsie Kaufmann.

The Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and former President John Kufuor, were also present at the Jubilee House to welcome the team.

The Amanfuo made its fifth trophy after defeating six-time champion, PRESEC-Legon ‘Ɔdadeɛs’ and Keta Secondary Technical School ‘Dzololians’.

The dream was made possible by their squad Abdallah Abdul, Evans Oppong and Eden Nana Kyei Obeng as a result of hard work, perseverance and a vision to win the trophy.

Prempeh College emerged winners with 53 points.

Presec-Legon came second with 49 points while Keta SHTS accumulated 30 points.

Egypt received the prize after winning the 2010 edition of the tournament, so claiming that particular incarnation of the trophy for a third time.

The trophy, whose style was first used in 2002 after Cameroon were awarded the previous cup having won it three times, was given to the EFA by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) after triumphs in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

On Friday, the EFA – whose media director confirmed the trophy’s loss to the BBC – said it had opened an investigation into the loss of the various trophies.

“As the Egyptian FA is currently developing the main headquarters, including changing the entrance to a small museum of Egyptian football, the management was shocked by the disappearance of some old trophies from the storeroom,” said the EFA in a statement.

After the EFA headquarters were attacked in 2013, various trophies – including the Nations Cup – were moved to a storeroom.

However, local officials only searched for them recently after the decision to renovate the EFA’s entrance so that Egypt’s multiple football cups could be displayed there.

The storming of the EFA by angry fans seven years ago during violence in Cairo is now a focal point as officials try to determine when and how the trophies were taken.

“The EFA is now investigating the trophies’ disappearance to determine if those old trophies were saved after the building was burned … or if they were lost when the building was exposed during this incident,” the EFA added.

Caf regulations state that a team that wins a particular incarnation of the Africa Cup of Nations trophy three times will own it for good.

Ghana was the first team to win the trophy three times, in 1978, while Cameroon then received the second version of the Nations Cup trophy after becoming the first country to win it on three occasions.

Under Caf rules, teams that win the Nations Cup receive a replica of the trophy on a permanent basis while they are allowed to keep the trophy for the two years in-between tournaments before handing it back.

The current trophy, whose style is still the same as the one won by Egypt, is in the hands of Algeria, who won the last Nations Cup title (in Cairo) last year.
