The Germany international, who will retire from professional football after Euro 2024, was given a guard of honour by both sets of players before the match and withdrawn in the 86th minute with the whole stadium rising to applaud him.

Kroos has won 22 trophies in his decade with Los Blancos.

Betis thought they had opened the scoring in the first half when Johnny Cardoso found the net from close range following Juan Miranda’s free-kick but Marc Roca was adjudged to be offside in the build-up.

Willian Jose poked in a near-post finish after the break but the flag was raised for offside once more.

Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo missed opportunities for the hosts as both sides settled for a point in their final league match of the season.

Attention now turns to next Saturday’s Champions League final (20:00 BST) at Wembley when Carlo Ancelotti’s side will face Borussia Dortmund in their quest for a 15th European title.

Toni Kroos to retire from football after Euro 2024 with Germany https://www.adomonline.com/toni-kroos-to-retire-from-football-after-euro-2024-with-germany/ Tue, 21 May 2024 11:22:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2397822 Toni Kroos is to leave Real Madrid and retire from football after Euro 2024, the Germany international announced on Tuesday.

Kroos, 34, has enjoyed an illustrious career which has included the 2014 World Cup title, three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and four LaLiga titles with Madrid to go with five Champions League titles across the two clubs.

The final club game of his career will be this season’s Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund on June 1.

“July 17th, 2014 — the day of my presentation at Real Madrid, the day that changed my life,” Kroos said on Instagram.

“My life as a footballer — but especially as a person. It was the start of a new chapter at the biggest club in the world. After 10 years, at the end of the season, this chapter comes to an end.

“At the same time, this decision means that my career as an active footballer will end this summer after the European Championship.

“As I have always said: Real Madrid is and will be my last club. I am happy and proud, that in my mind I found the right timing for my decision and that I could choose it by my own.”

Toni Kroos explains decision to reverse international retirement https://www.adomonline.com/toni-kroos-explains-decision-to-reverse-international-retirement/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 09:48:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2363103 Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has said he “never doubted” his decision to come out of international retirement in order to represent Germany at Euro 2024.

Kroos stepped away from international duty almost three years ago in the wake of a disappointing Euro 2020. Germany had already endured an even worse 2018 World Cup when they failed to make it out of the group stage and then repeated that disaster in 2022 without Kroos.

The 34-year-old confirmed last week he will return to Germany’s squad next month.

Going into more detail about the decision, Kroos explained on his own Einfach mal Luppen podcast: “There hasn’t been a moment where I doubted it. It probably wouldn’t be good to say that now, but it’s really from the bottom of my heart.

“I would say that I really thought everything through. I took enough time to think everything through and came to the conclusion that the chances absolutely outweighed the negative scenario.”

Germany are on home soil in the summer, seeking to win its first international trophy since World Cup glory in 2014. Their last European Championship success came back in 1996.

As far as his club future is concerned, Kroos has a contract with Real Madrid until June. He didn’t sign that deal until his previous deal was just days away from expiring last summer and he could again delay any decision about next season until late, or even after his contract ends.

Kroos has never previously shied away from the idea of retiring relatively early, which would mimic former Germany and Bayern Munich teammate Philipp Lahm if he felt he had achieved everything that he could and was going out on top. Winning the Euros would certainly complete his personal trophy collection that already includes multiple domestic and Champions League titles.

Kroos, 34, was part of the Germany team who won the World Cup in 2014. and has won 106 caps for Die Mannschaft.

He retired in July 2021 but has now reversed the decision after talks with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.

“I’ll be playing for Germany again from March. Why? Because I was asked by the coach and I’m up for it,” Kroos said in an Instagram post.

“I’m sure that much more is possible with the team at the European Championship than most people think right now.”

During his club career, Kroos has won both the Bundesliga and La Liga three times, in addition to five Champions League winners’ medals.

As well as the World Cup triumph, he was part of the Germany teams that finished third at the 2010 tournament and reached the semi-finals of Euro 2012.

He is is eligible to be selected in Nagelsmann’s squad for next month’s international friendlies against France and the Netherlands.

Germany face Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich in the opening match of Euro 2024 on Friday, 14 June.
