From humble beginnings to becoming a household name, Tima’s journey is a story of bold pivots, brave reinvention, and the beauty of staying true to one’s calling.

She’s not just a TV host or a radio voice. She’s a movement rooted in service, built on purpose, and powered by resilience.

Raised in Obuasi by her parents, Mary Andzi Quainoo and Felix Kwaah Yeboah, Tima’s childhood was laced with strong family values and community spirit.

But her big break didn’t come from a carefully planned audition. It was serendipity.

While studying journalism at IBM&J in Kumasi, a classmate who is now an industry stalwart, Prince Minkah, invited her to be part of a TV drama discussion show, Abrabɔ Mu Nsɛm.

Her boldness caught the eye of legendary actress Naana Hayford, who encouraged her to act.

Days later, Tima landed a minor role as a witch but destiny had more in store.

While casually talking on the phone on a film set, she was spotted by director Asare Bediako, who saw star power in her presence.

Soon, she landed her first lead role as Sandra in Asem Asa (2007), launching her into Kumawood fame.

Roles in Obra, Aden, Sugar, and more followed.

In 2008, Tima moved to Accra for her national service as a teacher. While juggling classroom duties and weekend film shoots, the balancing act proved too demanding.

Something had to give.

She redirected her path once again, enrolling at Jayee University College to complete a top-up degree while interning at TV Africa.

Post-graduation in 2011, she started national service at Graphic Communications Group, but health complications during pregnancy led her to seek a transfer which landed her at Multimedia Group.

Her resilience during pregnancy earned her the nickname “the pregnant but tireless worker.”

When her service ended without a job offer, she left with grace but didn’t close the door.

In 2014, she got the callback that would change everything. Multimedia remembered her.

Despite being heavily pregnant again, she secured a role as Channel Executive and returned to work just two months after delivery.

The Rise of Kumkum

In 2015, the tide shifted.

She started as a voice-over artist for 4Kids Paradise and red-carpet entertainment but her voice quickly became a sensation.

Audiences fell in love and wanted to see the face behind the sound. When a host for Kumkum Bhagya Chatroom was suddenly unavailable, Tima stepped in.

Hosting in Twi felt daunting at first but she crushed it.

By 2017, she was the face of Kumkum on Adom TV, turning soap operas into cultural events.

From there, she hosted the Aben Show for 11 successful seasons, steered Yenbo Nkommo on Adom FM, and co-hosted Red Carpet Year in Review.

She also held down a seven-year stint on Hitz FM as a relationship show host, growing a loyal following.

Tima isn’t just about on-screen sparkle. Through her Tima Kumkum Foundation, she supports teen mothers, orphans, fibroid patients, and inmates at Osu Correctional Centre.

Her digital series, Be Inspired by Tima, dives deep into emotional healing, life journeys, and untold stories.

With over 1 million followers each on Facebook and Instagram, and over 65,000 on Threads, she’s built a powerful digital tribe.

Through it, she mentors aspiring journalists and challenges media to embrace ethical, impactful storytelling.

The engagement centered on building a collaborative partnership to extend sensitization campaigns on G6PD deficiency across Ghana, Africa, and beyond.

G6PD deficiency, an enzyme disorder which affects millions globally, often goes undiagnosed, leading to severe health complications and in worst case, death.

Determined to change this narrative, Tima Kumkum is leveraging her platform to educate the public and bring expertise on board to advocate for screening and treatment options.

During the meeting, Keely Harris brought valuable insights, drawing from her extensive experience as a community leader and volunteer for over two decades. Her professional background as an IVF Research Technician and her leadership at the G6PD Deficiency Foundation have been instrumental in driving impactful health initiatives.

Also, Niloofer Darbary detailed how her work with the G6PD-COVID-19 Task Force made impacts. She preached the importance of early diagnosis through newborn screening campaigns and bringing awareness to the role of the G6PD enzyme during the pandemic.

Together, this partnership represents a significant step forward in bridging gaps in knowledge, resources, and healthcare access for individuals affected by G6PD deficiency.

Speaking on the collaboration, Tima Kumkum expressed her optimism, noting that this partnership would be of great benefit to G6PD patients in Ghana and beyond.

The Tima Kumkum Foundation and the G6PD Deficiency Foundation aim to work together on educational programs, community outreach initiatives, and screening campaigns to shed light on this pressing health issue.

As a survivor who almost lost her life due to unawareness of the deficiency, Tima Kumkum hopes her effort will ensure others do not endure such life-threatening challenges.

Additionally, awareness was raised about G6PD Deficiency, a genetic condition that affects red blood cells and can lead to serious health complications if not properly managed.

Experts in the field shared information about the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for G6PD Deficiency, equipping mothers with the knowledge needed to safeguard their families’ health.

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity for mothers to spend quality time with Tima Kumkum, a beloved media personality and philanthropist known for her passion for education and community development.

Tima Kumkum engaged with attendees, offering words of encouragement, inspiration, and support.

Following the program, Tima Kumkum further demonstrated her commitment to uplifting mothers by distributing products from Top Choco and Flora Tissues, aiming to bring smiles to the faces of attendees and enhance their well-being.

She recounted how she was unaware of her G6PD deficiency for almost 25 years, leading to numerous health challenges throughout her life.

She revealed that, her condition remained undiagnosed until she was pregnant with her son, Jayden.

During her pregnancy, Tima said she got an infection and sought medication from her midwife, unaware of the potential dangers posed by certain drugs due to her G6PD deficiency.

Despite experiencing alarming symptoms, including bleeding, she initially dismissed them as common pregnancy issues.

However, she said her condition worsened rapidly and put her and the unborn baby at risk.

Tima was referred to three different hospitals before she underwent an emergency caesarian surgery to save both herself and her baby.

“During my 3rd trimester around almost 40 weeks, I had infection so I went to visit my midwife and she gave me medicine in the afternoon only for me to start bleeding in the night. I was quickly rushed to the hospital and unfortunately pharmacies were on strike then so they kept referring me from Korle-Bu to 37 then finally to Ridge hospital. The doctor told us that if I’m not rushed to a private hospital, I might lose my life and that of the baby because all government hospitals can’t do a CS and my condition required one. I was rushed to Lapaz Community hospital and within a few minutes Jayden came out.”

After the surgery, she said the doctor diagnosed that she suffered an abnormal haemorrhage, as the Sulphur-based drug was pushing her placenta out.

“I realized I almost caused my own death but thank God I was saved last minute. How I survived for the past 25 years of my life without knowing I had the defect and was taking sulfur-based medications and using sulfur-based stuff in my daily life is just a miracle” Tima recounted.

Reflecting on her ordeal, Tima advocated for awareness and education about G6PD deficiency.

She urged individuals to get tested for the condition and to educate themselves about its implications.

Tima’s near-death experience has inspired her to establish the Tima Kumkum Foundation in 2018, dedicated to raising awareness about G6PD deficiency and providing support to affected individuals.

In the post, she questioned why married couples cheat and why single people are attracted to married people.

But Tima’s harmless post has attracted backlash, as netizens claimed she was referring to media personality, Serwaa Amihere whose bedroom video with a married man has gone viral on social media.

In a statement clarifying her intention, Tima expressed disappointment that her utterances are been misconstrued by the public.

She explained that, the post was related to a topic she intended to discuss on her show on Adom FM, titled “Yenbo Nkommo,” which tackles sensitive issues.

The presenter reiterated that, she had no malicious intention whatsoever, as the discussion was not centered around Serwaa, but was merely a teaser for the upcoming show.

She emphasized that, she would never wish ill on anyone, especially a colleague like Serwaa Amihere, with whom she shares a professional relationship.

Tima Kumkum lamented how social media often leads to misinterpretations and urged her followers not to misconstrue her intentions.

She remains committed to using her platform solely to address important topics and provide assistance to those in need, without any malicious intent.

The grand event, held on March 30, 2024, unfolded in the elegant setting of Wesley Towers, situated opposite Heritage Towers.

Attendees adorned themselves in black tie attire, with ladies adding a touch of sophistication with fascinators.

Tima Kumkum’s well-deserved recognition came as a result of her remarkable contributions to the media landscape, particularly in the digital space.

The journalist with the Multimedia Group Limited’s Adom Brands earned not just one but two nominations for her outstanding work.

While she clinched the title of African Female Digital Media Influencer of the Year, she also received nomination for African Female Entertainment Host of the Year on television.

Expressing appreciation for the recognition, Tima Kumkum humbly dedicated the award to her supporters and mentors who have played a pivotal role in her career.

She also acknowledge Almighty God whose divine guidance has been instrumental in shaping her journey.

Through her Tima Kumkum Foundation, she organised a charity event to uplift the spirits of the school children and address their pressing needs.

Most of the students needed school uniforms and other materials to make learning conducive.

An empathic Tima was moved by the plight of the pupils and set it as her mission for her 36th birthday to fete the pupils and make a massive donation.

For this special occasion, the foundation solicited donations, including clothes, shoes, water, drinks, and stationary items like books, pens, pencils, and sharpeners from well-wishers and top brands like CHOCO, SLIMNFIT, and Angel Cola.

Tima Kumkum Foundation also provided healthy homemade meals to the pupils to celebrate their ‘our day’ with a sense of joy and renewed hope.

Together with her husband, Tima cut her birthday cake with the pupils before distributing the items.

The chief of the town gave his blessing to the laudable gesture.

Tima who completed Ghana National College in 2005, gave a talk on career after school alongside Irene Giacoobe one of the best designers in Ghana and the Director of Royalcouture, also an old student of the school who completed in 2002.

The duo used their talk session to inspire the students, advising them to dare when they do come out of school.

There was a medical team from Altmed Clinic – Dr Daniel Fordjour, Mr Ohene, a pharmacist who also gave a health talk on menstrual hygiene as well as drug intake.

There was also a fashion show to climax the occasion.

The Domestic headmistress of the school, Mrs Gifty Arthur Yamoah, was grateful to the team for making time off their busy schedules to talk to the students.

According to Bie Gya, she believes dancing is the talent God gave her, adding that, she cannot wait to showcase it to the world.

This was at the Young Professionals and Youth Coalition’s (YPYC) 11th edition of the Young Professionals Role Model (YPRM) event.

Tima Kumkum was part of 10 high profile personalities slated to receive honorary awards in diverse areas.

She won the silver category at the event which took place on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
