In a statement issued on March 13, the party commended Mahama’s decision to allocate substantial financial resources to assist affected families.

The recently presented budget by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson earmarked GHC 242.5 million for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage and an additional GHC 200 million for relief efforts in Agavedzi, Amutsinu, Salakope, and Adina—coastal communities that have suffered persistent tidal wave destruction over the years.

The statement, signed by the NDC’s Volta Regional Chairman, Mawutor Agbavitor, described these allocations as bold and compassionate interventions that reaffirm Mahama’s concern for the well-being of affected residents.

According to the Volta NDC, the relief funds will not only provide immediate support to displaced families but also contribute to long-term recovery efforts aimed at restoring dignity and stability to these communities.

“The Volta NDC has meticulously examined the budget and has no doubt that President Mahama’s policies are bold, visionary, sensitive, and people-centred,” the statement read. “His actions are a powerful testament to his unwavering commitment to governance that prioritises human development, economic resilience, and social justice.”

The party emphasized that these financial commitments align with Mahama’s broader agenda to reset Ghana’s economy while alleviating the hardships of ordinary citizens.

The statement noted that Mahama’s leadership continues to inspire trust and confidence, especially among residents of the Volta Region, who have long sought concrete government intervention to mitigate the impact of climate-induced disasters.

Communities along Ghana’s southeastern coast have repeatedly suffered from tidal waves, with homes and livelihoods lost to the sea.

Residents and advocacy groups have consistently called for government intervention, and the announcement of this strategic funding has been welcomed as a long-overdue response to their needs.

As relief efforts commence, stakeholders, including local leaders and development partners, are expected to collaborate to ensure the effective and transparent disbursement of funds to beneficiaries.

The NDC’s commendation of Mahama’s efforts underscores the significance of the budgetary allocations in addressing long-standing challenges faced by the Volta Region’s coastal communities.

It also signals growing expectations for sustained government support in tackling environmental and climate-related vulnerabilities across the region.

EPA boss sends important message to Ketu South tidal wave victims https://www.adomonline.com/epa-boss-sends-important-message-to-ketu-south-tidal-wave-victims/ Fri, 07 Mar 2025 09:59:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2512284 Acting CEO of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, has urged victims of the tidal waves in Ketu South to relocate and seek shelter with family members in safer areas.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, she explained that the EPA’s role is to assess the environmental impact and advise affected residents on necessary actions.

“We are here to assess the situation and guide the people on what to do. Unfortunately, the EPA does not have the financial strength to undertake sea defence projects. That is why we have called for support and are hoping to get the needed help to protect the affected lands,” she said.

She further urged residents to prioritize their safety.

“The best option for now is for people to move to safer places. If you have relatives in areas not affected, I advise you to go and stay with them until a lasting solution is found,” she added.

EPA BOSS ON TIDAL WAVE

Prof. Klutse’s comments follow a visit by former President John Dramani Mahama and key government ministers to the Ketu South Constituency, where communities such as Salakope, Amutinu, and Agavedzi have been severely impacted by the floods.

The visit aimed to assess the damage and determine appropriate interventions.

Meanwhile, the President has directed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to allocate funds for the commencement of phase two of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project to help mitigate the impact of future flooding.

Families forced to sleep in the open as tidal waves hit parts of Volta Region https://www.adomonline.com/families-forced-to-sleep-in-the-open-as-tidal-waves-hit-parts-of-volta-region/ Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:33:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2511128

Agavedzi, Salakope, and Amutinu—once thriving coastal communities in the Volta Region—are now reduced to shadows of their former selves, ravaged by relentless tidal waves.

These waves have destroyed homes, farmlands, and even cemeteries, leaving hundreds of families stranded in conditions unfit for human dignity.

In a situation that echoes the aftermath of war, entire families—men, women, and children—can be seen sleeping by the roadside, seeking refuge under the cold night air and dim streetlights. In Agavedzi, a family has even been forced to live inside a premix fuel facility, sharing space with highly flammable products due to a lack of alternatives.

A Forgotten Promise: The Abandoned Housing Project

Amid this crisis, abandoned housing units—intended to provide shelter for displaced residents—now stand as monuments to broken promises. The structures, meant to offer hope, have deteriorated over the years, now overrun with weeds and crumbling walls. The residents, who desperately need shelter, can only watch as these buildings stand vacant.

The Emotional Toll

The emotional and psychological toll on residents is severe. Parents helplessly watch their children sleep on empty stomachs. Young mothers cradle their babies on bare ground, shivering through the night, while elderly residents wander, unable to accept their homelessness. The heartbreaking act of exhuming the remains of loved ones, forced by the encroaching sea, has intensified their pain.

A Deafening Silence from Authorities

Despite government officials and MPs visiting the affected communities, their presence has yielded only empty promises. Bureaucratic processes continue, but families remain without shelter or food, and no clear plan for relocation has been provided. The people of these communities have been left with no real solutions, their suffering ignored.

A Call for Urgent Action

This humanitarian crisis demands immediate intervention. The government must revive the abandoned housing project to provide shelter for the displaced. Emergency relief—food, tents, and medical aid—must be sent to those sleeping on the streets. Most importantly, sea defense projects must be expedited to protect the remaining communities from further devastation.

If urgent action is not taken, more families will be left homeless, more children will suffer, and more lives will be lost—not only to the tidal waves but also to the neglect of those in power. The time to act is now. The people of Agavedzi, Salakope, and Amutinu deserve better.
