Thunderstorm kills four children, injures one at Sefwi Awaso

A powerful thunder strike during a heavy downpour has claimed the lives of four children and left another injured at Sefwi Awaso in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

The heartbreaking incident occurred on Monday evening at the Awaso GBC Compound while heavy rain poured across the area.

According to family members of the deceased, the children were playing together during the downpour when the lightning bolt suddenly struck, sending shockwaves through the community.

Parents said they only became aware of the tragedy after hearing a loud sound and receiving news that their children had been hit by the thunder.

The unfortunate event has left the entire Awaso community in grief and disbelief.

The Assemblyman for the Awaso Electoral Area, Kennedy Ayitey Wisdom, who visited the affected families, expressed his condolences and urged parents to exercise extreme caution during rainy periods.

He educated residents on the dangers of thunderstorms, advising parents to keep children indoors and avoid exposure to open areas or electrical installations during storms.

One child who survived the lightning strike is currently receiving medical treatment.

It indicated that, the rain in Ghana is a result of a rainstorm observed over southern Togo.

It is expected to drift westward to affect areas within southern Ghana with thunderstorms or rain of varying intensities, as well as induce cloudiness.

Moderate to strong winds are likely to accompany the rainstorm over some areas.

In the morning of Monday, May 6, between the hours of 7 and 11, areas including Aflao, Keta, Dzodze, Anloga, Ho, Ada foah, Accra, Kasoa, Dodowa, Madina, Nsawam, Koforidua, Akim Oda, and its surroundings are expected to observe precautionary measures due to heavy rainfall.

However, Cape Coast, Tarkwa, Axim, Takoradi, and its surroundings will have low risk.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned of thundery showers of varying intensities in some parts of Ghana.

The areas along the Coast, Middle and Oti Regions will experience rainfall this afternoon while the evening is expected to be cloudy.

The marine surroundings of the country will be affected by the rainstorm.

In a release, it stated that the regions stated will be affected dueo to two separate rainstorms observed over the Gulf and North-eastern portions of Ghana.

Meteo Agency releases 24-hour forecast for Ghana

The Ghana Meteorological Agency says there will rainstorm in some parts of the country tonight.

In a press release, signed by senior meteorologist, Frederick Quaytey Cudjoe, the Agency said cloudiness with sunny breaks will prevail over most places in the middle
and coastal sectors with chances of thunderstorms and rains occurring over few places late afternoon and into the evening.

The Upper Regions will remain slightly hazy with most places in the northern sector expected to experience hot and sunny weather this afternoon with isolated cases of thundery showers over the lower portions of the north and the transition belt.

However, misty and foggy conditions will reduce visibility over high grounds and forest areas early tomorrow morning.

Probability of occurrence is 40%
