Addressing party members and traditional authorities in Hohoe, Volta Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah explained that the tour is a continuation of the NDC’s tradition of expressing appreciation to Ghanaians following elections.

He said it also serves to reaffirm the party’s dedication to accountability and good governance.

“I want to be known as a grateful National Chairman. This tour is about continuing our culture of engagement and gratitude. Those who disagree with me, please continue, it’s part of our contest of ideas,” he said.

According to him, the initiative is designed to promote unity within the party, address internal issues, and keep supporters informed about government programmes.

He emphasized that national initiatives, including efforts to combat illegal mining and corruption, take time to show tangible results but remain top government priorities.

Touching on development projects in the Volta Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah mentioned the ongoing work at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and the Eastern Corridor Road as examples of the government’s continued commitment to regional growth.

“Our focus is on building trust through action,” he stressed. “We urge our supporters to stay united and keep faith with the government so we can deliver fully on our promises.”

The NDC chairman’s “Thank You” tour is expected to cover all 16 regions, recognizing the contributions of party leaders, cadres, and grassroots members who played a part in securing the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections.

While some political observers view the tour as a subtle step toward a possible presidential bid, Asiedu Nketia insists his intentions are rooted in gratitude and party unity, not personal ambition.

The three-day tour, running from September 17 to 19, covers 16 constituencies in the Eastern Region. Officially, the visit is meant to acknowledge the contributions of party executives, cadres, and grassroots organisers toward the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections.

Some observers, however, believe the exercise could also serve to raise Mr. Asiedu Nketia’s political profile for the future.

Addressing party members in the Akuapem North Constituency, the NDC Chairman explained how responsibilities were divided during the elections.

“We realised that the elections had two main fronts, the presidential and parliamentary. It was important for President Mahama to focus entirely on the presidential contest, while my team worked to secure parliamentary seats,” he said.

He noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) shifted its attention to parliamentary contests, perceiving Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign as weakened.

“Their strategy was to win majority control in Parliament, even if President Mahama emerged victorious, in order to weaken his governance,” he added.

To counter this, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the NDC deliberately targeted challenging constituencies and mobilised grassroots structures to strengthen its position.

“We went into areas that were considered NPP strongholds, engaged with communities, and by God’s grace, before the elections ended, we were able to capture many constituencies from their hands,” he recounted.

Reiterating the essence of his tour, he stressed: “This tour is not about the presidential campaign, it is about appreciating the efforts of our people who worked tirelessly to win seats in Parliament and to strengthen the party’s position.”

The tour, led by the NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is intended to express the party’s and the flagbearer’s gratitude to party executives, members, and Ghanaians for their support despite the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The tour, which began last weekend, has so far covered the Western, Western North, Bono, Ahafo, Ashanti, and Bono East Regions, with the flagbearer and party leadership engaging stakeholders of the party at all levels.

It has now progressed to the north, starting in the Savannah Region on Saturday.

According to the party’s schedule, the team will visit the Upper West Region on Sunday, the Upper East Region on Monday, the North East Region on Tuesday, and the Northern Region on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

The tour will then return to the south, covering the Oti Region, the Volta Region, the Eastern Region, and finally the Greater Accra Region in the subsequent days.

Apart from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is leading the tour, other members of the delegation include the party’s National Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim (who has temporarily stepped away to attend to an urgent issue), the 3rd National Vice Chairman, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, and other leading members of the party.

According to him, the chairman had to attend to pressing matters in Accra but is expected to rejoin the team in due course.

Speaking to the media on the matter, Mr. Kodua explained that the chairman was actively involved in the tour just a day prior and accompanied the delegation to various locations.

“The National Chairman was with us even yesterday, and we all went to Adansi Asokwa and then to Bekwai and other places. But there was an emergency that warranted him to return to Accra and address it,” he said.

He further noted that the scope of work required to sustain the party goes beyond the “Thank You” tour.

“The work we are doing for the party is huge, and it is not only about the ‘Thank You’ tour. As I speak here, the national organizer isn’t here—it is also because of our upcoming demonstration. It is the same reason for the chairman to hold some meetings, including with our Council of Elders,” he explained.

Mr. Kodua stressed that the chairman’s temporary absence should not be misconstrued as disengagement from the tour.

“It is not true that he has abandoned the tour. He will return to join us on the tour,” he assured.

He believes the exercise which was expected to foster unity is rather turning competitive and dividing the party.

“The current ‘Thank You Tour’ has turned into an unnecessary competition and it is good for Kennedy Agyapong to withdraw,” he told Nhyira Fm.

Mr. Akomea bemoaned the division among party leadership and called for leaders to be models of unity for party members.

He observed such tours have been staged since 1992 when the New Patriotic Party lost elections.

“Leaders in the party must remain united and be a symbol of unity for the party supporters to follow. This thank you tour is not new, it has been there since 1992,” he stated.

The senior member of the New Patriotic Party indicated he is saddened by the extent of loss in the 2024 elections and stressed the need for party members to reflect on that and be positioned for victory in 2028.

“If you look at the NPP, we are really sad about the margin of loss in the 2024 elections. This should guide the way we do things if we want to win the 2028 elections,” said Nana Akomea.

The incident occurred during the NPP’s “Thank You Tour” in the Bantama Constituency of the Ashanti Region.

Eyewitnesses say the victim, part of a group of students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was threatened multiple times with pistols by the assailants, who later fired eight warning shots into the air.

The confrontation reportedly began when the students attempted to prevent the armed men from taking away cash presented after the event.

During the scuffle, the victim—whose identity is being withheld—was stabbed in the upper right rib.

Medical staff at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s emergency unit confirmed that the victim is in stable condition after undergoing minor surgery.

According to members of the student group, the first altercation occurred inside an auditorium where NPP leaders were addressing supporters.

They allege they were threatened after chanting songs in support of Kennedy Agyapong.

“One of the guys brandished a gun, and when one of our members confronted him, he put the gun away and walked off,” an eyewitness recounted.

Tensions escalated after the group received an undisclosed sum of money from an unidentified individual. The armed men allegedly intercepted the cash and again threatened the students at gunpoint.

After the students called for support in an attempt to retrieve the money, another confrontation erupted. The assailants reportedly fired into the air.

“When I confronted the guys, they spoke in Hausa. We tried to reason with them to return at least some of the money. They gave us GH¢200, which was too small,” a witness said.

“When we pushed further, one of them pulled a gun and fired eight shots into the air. As we ran for our lives, one of them drew a knife and stabbed my colleague.”

The incident has been reported to the police, who have retrieved eight spent bullet casings from the scene.

Kennedy Agyapong, the former MP for Assin Central, visited the victim at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital on Monday evening.

Sources close to Joy News suggest that Mr. Agyapong may be considering withdrawing from the ongoing NPP “Thank You Tour” following the incident.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Jantuah on Nhyira FM’s Kuroyi Mu Nsem show, Kwame Danso stated that instead of embarking on a nationwide appreciation tour, the opposition NPP should apologize to Ghanaians for what he described as “unpopular and burdensome policies they introduced while in power”.

“Instead of a ‘Thank You Tour’, the NPP should embark on an apology tour to Ghanaians,” he said.

He specifically cited the Electronic Levy (E-levy), the betting tax, and the much-debated National Cathedral project as examples of policy decisions that have eroded public trust in the New Patriotic party.

“To regain appeal, the NPP should apologize for the introduction of E-levy, betting tax, and the National Cathedral in which they invested so much just to dig a manhole for Ghanaians. Your ‘Thank You Tour’ lacks purpose without reconciliation with the people of Ghana,” he emphasized.

Mr. Danso further urged the NPP to assume the role of a “responsible opposition,” particularly as the country moves towards a different direction from the Nana Addo and Bawumiah–led government.

“They should focus on offering constructive ideas rather than obstructing efforts aimed at national progress,” he added.

On the topic of potential collaboration with Alan Kyerematen, Mr. Danso stated that the doors were not entirely closed.

“If the NPP wants Alan’s support, they should appoint credible mediators and offer a genuine apology,” he noted, suggesting that mutual respect and accountability are prerequisites for any form of alliance.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, April 28, he dismissed the tour’s official purpose and questioned its timing and sincerity.

“I actually think that we need an Apology Tour rather than a Thank You Tour,” he said.

“We should be apologising to the country for our bad governance.”

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had lost credibility in the eyes of the public and needed to do more than offer gratitude.

“We should also have an accountability process in which we hold to account the leaders of our previous government and agencies whose misgovernance, arrogance, and corruption caused our defeat,” he stressed.

“That will give us more credibility with the public.”

According to Dr. Kennedy, the internal issues within the party have not been resolved, despite public appearances suggesting otherwise.

He described the presidential primaries that produced Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer as divisive and even violent.

“The primary that led to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s selection was characterised by a little bit of rancour,” he said. “Someone lost an eye. There was violence, actually.”

He added that the unrest had not ended.

“I am told that even on this Thank You Tour, some slaps have been exchanged,” he revealed.

“Which shows that there is a need for more behind-the-scenes reconciliation and other things before we take it public.”

Dr. Kennedy did not mince words about what he believes is the real purpose of the tour.

“It is clear that Dr. Bawumia is trying to make his case ahead of his competitors,” he said. “Everybody knows that.”

For him, the party’s actions suggest it is still focused on image and political advantage rather than accountability and healing.

“We are jumping steps,” he said.

“We need to come clean before we move forward.”

Dr. Bawumia gave the assurance as part of his Thank You tour in the Western region accompanied by the NPP national executives and former presidential aspirants.

The tour is to express appreciation to party faithful who worked tirelessly in the 2024 election campaign.

The tour also forms part of the party’s agenda to unite and strengthen its base from the grassroots level to the top, as they seek to bring together dissatisfied members who abstained from the last elections, leading to their defeat.

Speaking in Takoradi, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that all past presidential candidates of the NPP have embarked on similar tours, following their defeats.

However, he adopted the new style, involving the party executives and past aspirants as part of his efforts to assist in uniting the party.

Dr. Bawumia also emphasised the need to express appreciation, even though the party lost massively in the last elections.

“God has said in all things we should give thanks and also His ways are not our ways. After the election defeat, many have questioned why we are embarking on a thank you tour but it is just to show appreciation to everyone for the selfless service,” he said.

Dr. Amoako Baah, in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, April 23, questioned the appropriateness of the tour after what he described as a “colossal defeat” in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

“What is going on is not good. When you lose this colossally, you don’t go on a Thank You Tour. No, thank you for what? For not voting for me?

“Instead, you say, ‘Sorry, forgive me.’ That’s what you do in this instance — and it’s not just for the flagbearer; all the party people should be doing that,” he insisted.

His comments come just hours after the NPP officially launched its Thank You Tour at the party’s national headquarters in Accra.

The tour, led by the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, April 26, and will see the party leadership traveling across the country to express appreciation to its supporters.

Dr. Bawumia, the sitting Vice President during the elections, was defeated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer and now-President, John Dramani Mahama, in a landslide victory. The NPP also lost several key parliamentary seats, reducing its influence in the legislature.

Dr. Amoako Baah has long been an outspoken internal critic of the NPP and has previously urged the party to undertake serious introspection and reform following its electoral setbacks.

However, the Director of Communications for the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that the scheduled Thank You Tour, which the former Vice President is to embark on, is aimed at reorganising the party’s members.

According to Mr. Ahiagbah, the 2024 defeat can largely be attributed to party supporters not coming out to vote, and the Thank You Tour is intended to serve as a bridge to correct the mistakes made.

“We are telling you that one of the key things the former Vice President highlighted is that our people didn’t come out to vote. This Thank You Tour is designed to galvanise the party, address the issues that need to be fixed, and to truly regenerate our party, reignite our passion, and work towards returning the party to power,” he said.

The Volta NDC is pleased to announce that H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, will pay a gratitude visit to the Volta Region.

This is in recognition of the overwhelming support and trust demonstrated by the chiefs and people of the Region, who contributed significantly to his re-election with not only an impressive 90.11% of the total votes cast in the 2024 presidential election but also giving the NDC all 18 parliamentary seats, including that of Hohoe.

The Thanksgiving event is scheduled to take place at the Ho Jubilee Park on Friday, January 24, at 12:00 PM.

This is a means for the former President to show appreciation to Ghanaians for their votes in the 2020 general elections.

Mr John Mahama started his nationwide ‘Thank You’ tour in the Upper East Regional Capital, Bolgatanga, continued to Walewale in the North East Region, Tamale as well as the Savanna and Upper West Regions in the first phase as scheduled.

During his tour, Mr Mahama held meetings with religious, traditional, and opinion leaders, as well as regional and constituency executives, and party faithful.

In the yet-to-be-embarked tour, he will be accompanied by the NDC’s National Executive Members and Regional Executive Members to interact with chiefs, queens and party supporters.

Mr Mahama will visit the region to show his appreciation for the massive votes that the party got from the during 2020 December polls.

Out of the nine constituencies in the region, the NDC won six seats and NPP three. The NDC has been dominating in the region with eight Members of parliament until the party lost the Sefwi Akontombra and Wiawso seats to NPP in the 2016 and 2020 polls.

It is expected that the former President tour to the region will boost the morale of the party supporters as they prepare for the 2024 general elections.

The appreciation, he explains, is due Akufo-Addo over Mahama’s nationwide Thank You tour.

According to Mr Boadu, opposition leaders in most countries do not have the leverage to embark on such tours, especially amid the coronavirus pandemic, hence appreciation will be a step in the right direction.

“Mahama has been able to go on the tour because we managed covid-19 well in the country. In the whole of Africa, we are one of the countries with the lowest mortalities,” he said on Adom TV’s Badwam.

When asked by show host, Omanhene Kwabena Asante on his take on the hardships in the economy, Mr Boadu said but for the covid, things would have been better off.

“Throughout the world, it is only about 29 countries who recorded positive growth in 2020 and for Ghana, a lot of investments were made towards the covid fight.
