She made the appeal on Sunday, August 24, at the Kansai Africa Business Forum in Osaka, a side event of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).

Highlighting opportunities in textiles, the automotive sector, and the green industry, Madam Ofosu-Adjare said Ghana was ready to forge stronger partnerships.

“With the right partnership, Ghana can become a competitive force for high-quality textile and apparel exports to African and global markets,” she explained, citing the country’s potential in the integrated cotton cultivation value chain.

She also noted Ghana’s growing automotive industry, where vehicle assembly plants are already operational, and the country is positioning itself as a hub under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“As AfCFTA gains momentum, regional demand for vehicles and components is expected to grow rapidly,” she said, urging Japanese firms to establish supplier networks and distribution hubs in Ghana.

The Minister further underscored Ghana’s commitment to green industrialisation through renewable energy, waste-to-value initiatives, and low-carbon manufacturing.

“These initiatives will not only reduce emissions but also generate new revenue streams for investors,” she said, adding that Ghana remained “open, eagerly prepared, and strategically positioned” to serve as Japan’s most reliable partner in Africa.

Government should institute Ministry for Textiles and Fashion Industry – professional group https://www.adomonline.com/government-should-institute-ministry-for-textiles-and-fashion-industry-professional-group/ Thu, 28 Nov 2024 20:20:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2477069 The Institute of Textiles and Fashion Professionals of Ghana (ITFP) is clamouring for the establishment of a ministry of textiles and fashion to help build a strong economy.

At the inaugural Annual International Conference of the Institute, Vice President, Professor Ebenezer Kofi Howard, decried the government’s neglect of the sector over the years.

According to him, it was about time the government engaged them in policy direction to help grow the textile and fashion industries.

“It is going to have economic gains because the industry is the bedrock upon which most of the economic goods are grown,” he said.

Professor Howard laid emphasis on the fact that technical and vocational education can sustain itself mostly on textiles and fashion.

“All the technical universities in Ghana are running textile and fashion programs but don’t have anywhere for them to go after the training; then what kind of training are we giving to them?” he asked.

Professor Awurabena Gloria Okrah, who has been in the textile and fashion industry for over forty years, said the maiden event has outdoored the Institute to the world.

“It will make an impact not only locally, nationally, but also globally,” she noted.

A ten-member national board was inaugurated at the 1st Annual International Conference of the Institute of Textiles and Fashion Professionals—Ghana. They include Prof. Charles Frimpong, Dr. Daniel Kwabena Danso, Prof. Richard Acquaye, Prof. Ebenezer Kofi Howard, Dr. Ninette Appiah, Dr. Solomon Ayesu Marfo, Rev. Dr. Timothy Crenstil, Jerome Kwaku Dunyo, Awurabena Gloria Okrah, and Kwodwo Agyenim Boateng.

AUDIO: Suggestions to revive ailing textile industry welcomed- Trade Ministry to textile workers union https://www.adomonline.com/audio-suggestions-to-revive-ailing-textile-industry-welcomed-trade-ministry-to-textile-workers-union/ Wed, 25 Apr 2018 18:49:00 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1082861
The Trade Ministry has indicated its readiness to find the best and lasting solution to the challenges in the textile industry.
Deputy Trade Minister, Carlos Ahenkorah, who disclosed this on Asempa FM’s EKOSII SEN, Wednesday said the Ministry is developing new ideas to eliminate the pirated goods on the local market.
His comment follows a decision by the Textile and Garment Workers Union of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) to demonstrate over some concerns in the sector.

An executive member of the union, Kofi Abeka, who disclosed this on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen, said they are protesting over the failure of the anti-counterfeit taskforce set up by the government to deal with the proliferation of fake textiles on the market.
The protest is expected to take place in Accra on April 27, 2018.
But Carlos Ahenkorah believes suggestions and expertise from the workers union to find solution to the problem is needed to fight the menace.

“I don’t understand why they think going to market is the only solution to curb this issue. They know the industry, they know what people are doing to harm the industry so it is their expertise that the ministry relies on to try to fight this menace and so we are working with them.”
The Ministry, he noted attaches great importance to the textiles and garments sector because of its potential for jobs and wealth creation.

According to the workers, the government taskforce, consisting of security personnel and other industry players has been inactive for some time.
He said they want the work of the taskforce re-activated as soon as possible and therefore the best thing to get their problems resolved is to hit the street to register their displeasure.

He said workers from Printex Ghana Limited, Akosombo Textiles Limited and Tex Styles GTP will all embark on the demonstration.
“Sometimes you may think we are being hard [sic] but that is what you have to do to make sure that things are done right; these are challenges that the trade ministry is going to face”, he said.
“We, as a labour union, are not going to do things to frustrate him [the minister]; he must be allowed to work and any advice they want from unions we are prepared to help because after-all, it’s the results we want”, he said.

Akufo-Addo’s African wear fake – Abraham Koomson https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addos-african-wear-fake-abraham-koomson/ Thu, 06 Jul 2017 13:22:47 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=274021 General Secretary of the Textile, Garment and Leather Employees Union (TEGLU) has claimed the African print shirts won by President Akufo-Addo are fake.
Abraham Koomson is convinced the nicely sewn African textiles worn by the President is from China.
The anti-counterfeit textile crusader on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday blamed the handlers of President Akufo-Addo for the blunder.
Mr. Koomson made the comment while discussing a planned demonstration by their union ON Wednesday, 12 July, 2017 against government’s inability to publish policy guidelines to regulate the importation and sale of African textile prints into the country.
He said they would also picket the Ministry of Trade and Industry on 13 July 2017 to press home their concerns.
The Trade Ministry, he added had promised to publish policy guidelines to check importation and sale of African textile prints to prevent the flooding of the market with fake products, which had for decades destroyed the local manufacturing industry.
However TEGLU insists, the deadline given by the Ministry for the release of the policy was 30 June, 2017, but all efforts by their union to seek explanation for the delays have proven futile.
In a rebuttal, deputy Trade Minister, Carlos Ahenkorah appealed to the union to rescind their decision.
He said the policy to check the importation of fake textiles into the country is at an advance stage and would be passed soon.
Carlos Ahenkorah Ministry is working assiduously to have their grievances address to ensure the textile industry does not collapse.
