Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Tuffuor stated that women have been barred from travelling, and any trader attempting to import tomatoes from Burkina Faso from tomorrow will face sanctions.

His announcement comes after armed insurgents ambushed a group of 18 Ghanaian tomato traders and truck drivers travelling to Burkina Faso to purchase tomatoes. The attack resulted in seven deaths and left several others injured.

“Currently, we have halted women from traveling, and anyone who attempts to import tomatoes starting tomorrow will face sanctions. We have also suspended all travels to Burkina Faso as we need to assess the situation and understand what has transpired,” he said.

Mr. Tuffuor described the trade as risky, noting that traders have sometimes survived bomb blasts due to the volatile security conditions in the region.

He explained that Ghana’s tomato production is seasonal, making imports from Burkina Faso necessary to meet national demand.

“Our job can be risky, and sometimes we survive bomb blasts. However, we cannot delay for too long — we must continue importing tomatoes, or it will negatively impact the country. In Ghana, we face a shortage of tomatoes, as they are seasonal. Therefore, imports from Burkina Faso are essential,” he said.

Regarding the victims, Mr. Tuffuor revealed that the bodies had to be buried on-site due to the condition in which they were found. He noted that DNA tests will be conducted to properly identify the deceased.

“We are still in discussions with the government and plan to conclude our meeting today,” he added.

Make suspended EOCO officer overall boss for being frank – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/make-suspended-eoco-officer-overall-boss-for-being-frank-asiedu-nketia/ Wed, 07 Nov 2018 08:31:16 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1461091 General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the suspended Eastern regional director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Fred Dzeny, would’ve performed better than the outfit’s current head.

According to him, Mr Fred Dzeny will be a better person to replace ACP Amoah.

Mr Asiedu Nketia said the current head at EOCO has hit the path of bad leadership characterised by corruption, considering his decision to suspend his Eastern Regional Director for making an anti-graft comment.

“Suspending a whole regional director for being frank and speaking about corruption is uncalled for. This shows how the Akufo-Addo government and all other institutions glorify corruption. The NPP government hates the truth and would always want to make life unbearable for truthful people.

“Mr Fred Dzeny should be the overall boss because he is the only one who has proven he can speak the truth about corruption,” he said on Okay FM monitoredAdomonline.com.

Fred Dzeny was suspended on Monday for saying that for the fight against corruption to be effective in Ghana, ruling governments should prosecute their own when the slightest incidence of corruption is raised against them.

“There should be the political will by the ruling government to fight it; and [it] should be ready to resource the corruption fighting agencies,” Mr Dzeny told journalists at a symposium on November 1.

Mr Nketia is appalled that an organisation whose mandate is to fight corruption in public offices would be offended by the frank commentary on the subject by its senior officers.

This is the second of such motions filed by Mr Agyapong. He filed the motion on Monday ahead of the second sitting of the committee.

The first sitting in June ended inconclusively after three MPs from the Central Region on the Committee recused themselves over possible bias.

The MPs were Gomoa Central MP, Naana Eyiah Quansah; Agona West MP, Cynthia Morrison and Upper Denkyira West MP, Samuel Nsowah-Djan.

The three have subsequently been replaced on the committee from the Majority.

Muntaka reports Kennedy Agyapong

The Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, filed a motion accusing Kennedy Agyapong of making contemptuous comments about the House in public.

Mr Agyeapong was subsequently summoned to appear before Parliament’s Privileges Committee which addresses such matters.

Muntaka Mubarak, who subsequently engaged in a fierce media war with Kennedy Agyapong over the matter, appeared before the committee to give evidence to back his claims.

The committee subsequently established a prima facie case against Mr. Agyapong, hence his appointment with the Committee.

Muntaka Mubarak had earlier said in a Citi News interview that he believes Kennedy Agyapong must be suspended for his utterances.

Nigerian chief suspended by Lagos governor over fake kidnap https://www.adomonline.com/nigerian-chief-suspended-lagos-governor-fake-kidnap/ Sat, 15 Jul 2017 10:15:00 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=297531 A Nigerian traditional chief in the state of Lagos has been suspended after he confessed to faking his own kidnap.
Lagos state Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said the incident was “an embarrassment to the state”.
He said in a statement that investigations had found that Chief Yusuf Ogundare had conspired with his family to frame a rival chief for the disappearance.
Kidnappings for ransom are common in southern Nigeria.
The governor ordered the chief to stop performing his chieftain duties immediately – to “stop parading [yourself] as Baale of Shangisha with immediate effect”.
Chief Ogundare was reported to have been kidnapped on 5 July and released by his captors six days later.

‘Frolicking’

His brother, Mohammed Adams, who was paraded alongside him after their arrest, had reported Chief Ogundare missing and alleged that they had both been kidnapped by people who wanted to sell land to the chief.
Eye-witnesses told police that they had seen the chief “frolicking” around the south-western cities of Ibadan and Ilorin.
According to the governor’s statement, the chief’s alleged captors dropped him off in the Alausa area on 11 July in a “suspicious manner”, alerting police who were on patrol in the area to investigate the matter.
Kidnappings have been on the rise in Nigeria.
The BBC’s Didi Akinyelure in Lagos notes that police recently celebrated the arrest of a kidnapping kingpin but in another high-profile case, a group of children abducted more than six weeks ago have yet to be released.
