Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Monday, Prof Ofori-Atta stated that her husband is prepared to engage fully with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), including via virtual platforms, as he continues to recover from prostate cancer surgery.

“The questions—he can answer them in a week or two. Send him the questions through his lawyers—he can answer. Set up a video meeting, and he will be able to answer,” she said. “He will not do anything to interfere or prolong the investigation.”

Her remarks follow growing public interest in the ongoing investigation involving Mr Ofori-Atta, who served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024. The case has gained prominence following the issuance of an Interpol red notice and allegations of financial mismanagement, abuse of office, and questionable offshore dealings during his time in office.

Prof Ofori-Atta emphasised that while her husband is physically unable to return to Ghana at present due to medical advice, he remains committed to due process and accountability.

Earlier, she revealed that the former minister had recently undergone successful prostate cancer surgery and is under strict medical supervision.

While some critics have questioned the timing of his medical disclosures—with suggestions of evading justice—the family maintains that Mr Ofori-Atta has nothing to hide and is cooperating fully within the limits of his current health condition.

“He cannot come to the country physically until medical advice proves that he can engage in physical travel,” she explained. “But Ghana is home. He is not running.”

Bellingham to miss start of season after shoulder surgery https://www.adomonline.com/bellingham-to-miss-start-of-season-after-shoulder-surgery/ Wed, 21 May 2025 09:50:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536958 Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham is expected to miss at least the first six weeks of next season when he has shoulder surgery after the Club World Cup.

The 21-year-old has struggled with a persistent shoulder problem since 2023 and Real have scheduled the operation for when the tournament in the United States is over.

The former Birmingham City midfielder has worn strapping on his shoulder when playing for England and for his club, having initially missed two games for both Madrid and England at the end of 2023 after injuring his shoulder against Rayo Vallecano.

The expanded 32-team Club World Cup takes place in the United States between 15 June and 13 July.

Bellingham is expected to miss the whole of preseason and at least the first six weeks of the new campaign, which would also mean being absent for England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia in September.

On Friday, England boss Thomas Tuchel will name his England squad for June’s qualifier against Andorra and friendly against Senegal, with questions remaining about whether or not players due to play in the Club World Cup will be selected.

Bellingham starred in his first season in Spain after signing for £115m from Borussia Dortmund.

He helped Madrid to the La Liga title and Champions League, scoring 23 goals in 43 appearances.

This season, though, he has scored just 14 in 52, with Madrid losing the title to Barcelona and being knocked out of Europe in the quarter-finals by Arsenal.

Real Madrid’s Rudiger has knee surgery https://www.adomonline.com/real-madrids-rudiger-has-knee-surgery/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 10:00:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530091 Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger faces a long spell on the sidelines after having knee surgery.

The Germany international was forced off in extra time on Saturday as Real lost the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona and was later diagnosed with a partial tear of the external meniscus in his left knee.

Real did not give a timescale for his recovery but Spanish media reports say he could be out for between six and eight weeks, which would rule him out of the rest of the domestic season and make him doubtful for the Club World Cup, which starts on 15 June.

Germany are also competing in the Nations League finals, which take place between 4 and 8 June.

In a post on social media, Rudiger said he had been playing in pain for more than seven months and that surgery was unavoidable.

“Now I’m finally pain-free again, and the surgery was a success. Thanks to the medical team,” he said.

“[There are] two big tournaments with the Nations League and the Club World Cup in front of me, but I have to look from week to week. I will do everything I can to make it happen.”

Rudiger, 32,” is already facing a long ban after being sent off for throwing an object, reportedly an ice cube, at the referee during the Barcelona defeat.

Under article 101 of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) disciplinary code, which covers “mild violence” towards referees, Rudiger could receive a suspension of between four and 12 matches.

However, if his actions are deemed more serious, he could face a ban of anything between three months to a year.

Rudiger has since apologised for the incident, which occurred after he had been substituted, saying there was “definitely no excuse” for his behaviour.

Team-mate Lucas Vazquez, who had also been substituted, was sent off too as both players angrily reacted to a foul given against Kylian Mbappe shortly before the final whistle.

Real’s England midfielder Jude Bellingham, 21, was also later sent off for dissent.

Jules Kounde scored in the 116th minute to secure a 3-2 win for Barcelona in a thriller.

I had surgery to lengthen my legs and then it went horribly wrong https://www.adomonline.com/i-had-surgery-to-lengthen-my-legs-and-then-it-went-horribly-wrong/ Sun, 11 Aug 2024 23:04:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2432362

Elaine Foo’s legs are streaked with thick, purple scars – each one a reminder of a leg-lengthening procedure which went badly wrong.

Since 2016, the 49-year-old has had five surgical procedures and three bone grafts, exhausted her life savings and brought a legal action against her surgeon, which was finally settled in July, with no admission of liability.

At one point, Elaine had a metal nail break through a bone and on another occasion, she says her legs felt like they were being “roasted from the inside”.

“My  journey has been a trial of fire – but I survived,” she says.

Her doctor consistently denied any negligence and says that some of the issues arose from complications she had been warned of, and others arose through her own actions.

Elaine Foo/Supplied Elaine says having longer legs became an obsession, and believes she has body dysmorphia

Elaine always hated her height.

“At 12, I was taller than most girls,” she says. “By 14, I was suddenly shorter than everyone. Over time, it became an obsession. Taller means better. Taller means more beautiful. I just felt that taller people had more chances.”

By adulthood, the obsession was overwhelming.

Elaine believes she had body dysmorphia, a mental health condition where a person sees a flaw in their appearance no matter how others see them. The impact of the condition can be devastating.

At the age of 25, Elaine came across an article about a Chinese clinic where people were having surgery to make their leg bones longer. The piece contained grisly details of medieval-looking leg cages and rampant infection. It sounded nightmarish but left Elaine intrigued.

“I know people will question the vanity of it,” she says. “But when you face body dysmorphia, there’s no rational explanation for why you feel so overwhelmingly bad.”

Sixteen years later, Elaine discovered a private clinic offering the procedure in London. It was being provided by the orthopaedic surgeon Jean-Marc Guichet, a limb-lengthening specialist who had even created his own lengthening device – the Guichet Nail.

“That was really a hallelujah moment, because I could do it in London and could recover at home,” she recalls.

“Dr Guichet was open about the kinds of things that could go wrong. Nerve injuries, blood clots, the possibility of bones not fusing back together.

“But I’d done my research, was going to a very expensive doctor, and I expected commensurate medical care. My dream was to grow from 5ft 2in (1.57m) to 5ft 5in (1.65m).”

On 25 July, at a cost of around £50,000, she went in for surgery and set in motion a process which would change her life.

Leg-lengthening procedures are relatively uncommon, but available at private clinics around the world. Depending on where it’s carried out, it can cost anything from £15,000 to upwards of £150,000.

Elaine Foo/Supplied Elaine says she initially felt no pain after the operation

“Waking up was very exciting, because it felt like nothing happened. No pain. But 90 minutes later, it starts. It felt like someone was cooking my legs. Like being roasted from the inside. That first night, I screamed until 6am, until I fell asleep screaming.”

With this procedure, some pain is to be expected. During the operation, the leg bones are broken in two and a metal rod is fitted inside.

The metal rods are gradually extended to increase their length and pull the two halves of bone apart. This process is meant to increase the patient’s height. The broken bones should gradually heal back together, to fill the gap in between.

The operation is complex, and it’s only the start of a long process.

“The lengthening process takes about two or three months, and then you have at least double that time before you’ve recovered reasonable function,” warns Prof Hamish Simpson, former council member of the British Orthopaedic Association. “For most people, it’s going to take a year out of your life.”

Once surgery was over, Elaine’s lengthening process began. Several times a day, she carried out an uncomfortable regimen, rotating her legs to trigger the rod’s ratchet mechanism. This is what makes the nail lengthen and her legs grow. But two weeks later, she says disaster struck.

“I’d been feeling a lot of pain in my left leg. Then one night, while I was moving around in bed, I heard what sounded like a Kit Kat crunch, followed by severe pain.”

Elaine went in for a scan, which confirmed her fears. The nail in her left leg had broken through her femur – the thigh-bone – the strongest bone in the human body. She was distraught, but she says she was reassured by Dr Guichet.

“He told me that all you need to do now is not worry. Wait for it to heal and once it’s healed, we’ll begin the process again.”

They would continue lengthening Elaine’s right leg, while scheduling another operation to deal with her left leg – which would eventually be lengthened the same amount as the right.

Elaine says she was told the extra operation would cost thousands of pounds, but was happy to pay if it meant she could see the process through.

By September, her right leg had reached its 7cm target. But things weren’t quite right. The discrepancy between her right and left leg was causing problems, curving her spine and leaving her in constant pain.

Six weeks later, scans of her right leg showed an alarming lack of bone growth. Her femur was essentially two bits of bone held together by the metal rod.

Elaine turned to Dr Guichet for help, who scheduled another operation at a clinic he worked at in Milan. In April 2017, they restarted the lengthening process in Elaine’s left leg, while also injecting bone marrow into the right leg – to stimulate bone growth there. After the operation, Elaine woke to more bad news.

“Dr Guichet told me the nail had broken while he was taking it out,” she says. “He had a nail from another patient which he was able to insert.” She adds that this was going to cost even more money.

Three days later, hardly able to move, but desperate to be home, Elaine returned to London. She says communication with Dr Guichet had soured and feels that by summer the doctor-patient relationship had broken down.

Elaine Foo/Supplied Elaine’s right leg showed a lack of bone growth, requiring further treatment

She didn’t know where else to turn, and by July 2017 she managed to see a specialist orthopaedic surgeon on the NHS.

She says the specialist told her, “this will not be a short journey.”

“I had to prepare myself for at least five years of treatment before healing fully,” she says.

Eight years on from the initial surgery, Elaine says she is still recovering from her mental and physical scars. She has a range of mobility issues and says she suffers from PTSD.

“From 2017 to 2020 I hid from the world. I was single, unemployed, penniless and disabled.”

But recently she’s begun to get closure. A four-year legal battle was finally settled in July when  Dr Guichet agreed to pay Elaine a “substantial” sum to settle her claim against him – without any admission of liability.

The surgeon’s lawyer denied any negligence on Dr Guichet’s part, telling the court: “Dr Guichet’s case is that there was no negligence, that the fracture and delayed bone healing were unfortunate non-negligent complications that Ms Foo was warned of before surgery, and that the limited right-sided bone regeneration was aggravated by Ms Foo’s undisclosed use of anti-depressants and by her deliberately extending the nail in her right leg beyond the agreed length.”

He also claimed in court that Ms Foo had “frequently declined” to follow Guichet’s advice and had neglected her rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

Elaine contests all of these claims. She says the anti-depressants were not linked to the complications and holds the doctor responsible for what happened to her.

Elaine assumed she was safe because she was paying so much. But she has paid more than just a financial price.

“I lost the best years of my life. I know people like to hear the word regret and if someone asked me today, would you have done it, if you knew you were going to go through all this? I would say a definite, ‘No, thank you very much’.”

Asante Kotoko coach undergoes successful surgery https://www.adomonline.com/asante-kotoko-coach-undergoes-successful-surgery/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 10:32:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2413636 Prosper Narteh Ogum has successfully undergone a surgery following a brief illness, Asante Kotoko has announced on Wednesday.

Although the club did not specify the nature of the illness that required the surgery, they confirmed that the procedure was successful.

Ogum is now focusing on regaining full fitness ahead of the next season.

“Our head coach, Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, has undergone successful surgery after a short illness. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to having him back soon,” the club shared on social media.

Ogum, who is also part of the club’s Interim Management Committee, is spearheading the restructuring of the playing squad.

The club has released 19 players, including goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad and striker Steven Mukwala, following the conclusion of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season.

“We need to implement several structural changes in the playing body with regard to signing players to strengthen the squad. This time, we are targeting players who have experience in the Premier League, not just those from lower divisions,” the 46-year-old said in a recent interview with the club’s media.

“We need to act swiftly to ensure we secure the players we want as quickly as possible” he added.

Kotoko finished last season without a trophy, placing sixth in the Ghana Premier League.

Prosper Narteh Ogum is expected to recover in time to lead the team for their upcoming Democracy Cup game against Hearts of Oak next month.

Mbappe avoids surgery after breaking nose in Austria win https://www.adomonline.com/mbappe-avoids-surgery-after-breaking-nose-in-austria-win/ Tue, 18 Jun 2024 12:02:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410000 France have confirmed that Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose against Austria on Monday but will not need surgery on the injury.

Les Bleus were able to hold onto a 1-0 victory over Ralf Rangnick’s side, courtesy of a first-half own goal by Max Wober, who turned in Mbappe’s cross.

However, the France captain was involved in an aerial collision with Kevin Danso, hitting his face on the defender’s shoulder, and needed lengthy treatment before being forced off in the final minute of normal time.

The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed on Tuesday that Mbappe had broken his nose and would need to wear a mask for the rest of the Euros but no update was given on whether he would be available for their game against the Netherlands on Friday.

“He has returned to the base camp of the French team,” the FFF said.

“He will undergo treatment in the coming days, without undergoing surgery immediately.”

Mbappe also took to social media, seeing the bright side to his injury, with a post on X saying: “Any ideas for masks?”

The 25-year-old, who has scored 47 goals in 80 appearances for France, is still yet to find the back of the net at the Euros.

He has had 18 shots at the European Championships without converting, while he registered 12 goals from 39 attempts at the World Cup.

Djokovic ‘will do best to return soon’ after knee surgery https://www.adomonline.com/djokovic-will-do-best-to-return-soon-after-knee-surgery/ Thu, 06 Jun 2024 07:30:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2405428 Novak Djokovic says he will do his best to return to the court “as soon as possible” after undergoing surgery on a knee injury.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion withdrew from Wednesday’s French Open quarter-final against Casper Ruud after tearing the medial meniscus in his right knee during a fourth-round victory over Francisco Cerundolo.

Recovery is likely to take at least three weeks, meaning the Serb could potentially miss Wimbledon, which starts on 1 July.

The injury will also impact the 37-year-old’s preparations for the Olympic Games, which begin on 27 July in Paris.

“I’m still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well,” Djokovic wrote on X.

“My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going.”

Djokovic is a seven-time Wimbledon champion and lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller in last year’s final.

He has, however, never won Olympic gold, and has made no secret that adding that title was a key priority for him this year.

“I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side as well as the overwhelming support I have received from my fans,” Djokovic wrote alongside a picture of himself and his medical team.

“I’m going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible.”

Djokovic will also lose his status as the world number one with Italy’s Jannik Sinner set to take his place.

Australian Open champion Sinner faces Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open semi-finals on Friday.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Tems, who gained prominence in 2020 after featuring on Wizkid’s hit song “Essence,” shared that the album, originally slated for release in 2021, had to be postponed due to her health issues.

Instead of her debut album, Tems released her second extended play, “If Orange Was a Place.”

She mentioned that, her battle to regain health inspired much of her new music, which centers on themes of resilience and perseverance.

“Being a warrior is about not giving up; even if they cut your leg, you walk on your knees, you fight on your knees using what you have — and that’s good enough,” Tems stated, reflecting on her journey.

Although Tems did not specify the illness that led to her surgery, she emphasized that her experiences have shaped her outlook and music.

Tems’ highly anticipated debut album, “Born In The Wild,” is set to be released on June 7.

Also, she will embark on her first global headline tour later that same month, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Mark Zuckerberg undergoes surgery after sustaining injury during Martial Arts training https://www.adomonline.com/mark-zuckerberg-undergoes-surgery-after-sustaining-injury-during-martial-arts-training/ Sun, 05 Nov 2023 08:26:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2314906 Mark Zuckerberg’s latest martial arts sparring session sent him to the operating table.

The Meta Platforms CEO and mixed martial arts enthusiast posted on social media on Friday that he tore one of his anterior cruciate ligaments, or ACLs, while training for a fight early next year.

A photo he posted on Instagram shows the tech billionaire lying in a hospital bed with his left knee elevated, bandaged and fit with a brace.

“Tore my ACL sparring and just got out of surgery to replace it,” Zuckerberg posted on Instagram. “Grateful for the doctors and team taking care of me. I was training for a competitive MMA fight early next year, but now that’s delayed a bit. Still looking forward to doing it after I recover. Thanks to everyone for the love and support.”

Menlo Park, California-based Meta did not immediately return an email seeking comment Saturday.

Zuckerberg, who in May completed his first jiu jitsu tournament, has previously posted updates on his martial arts training. A few weeks ago, he shared a close-up photo of his face on Instagram showing bruising on the bridge of his nose and under his eyes, which he attributed to sparring that got “a little out of hand.”

The Facebook founder and Elon Musk grabbed headlines this summer after the two tech moguls seemingly agreed to an in-person face-off in late June.

Musk and Zuckerberg fueled interest in the potential match through online jabs at one another, with Musk at one point touting how he was training by lifting weights. But in August, the Tesla CEO posted on social media that he might need surgery before the fight could happen.

Shortly after, Zuckerberg posted on the Threads social media app that he was ready to move on, writing: “If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously.”

Neymar to have surgery after anterior cruciate ligament injury https://www.adomonline.com/neymar-to-have-surgery-after-anterior-cruciate-ligament-injury/ Thu, 19 Oct 2023 10:28:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2307630 Brazil and Al-Hilal forward Neymar will have surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee while on international duty.

The 31-year-old was taken off on a stretcher in tears during the 2-0 defeat by Uruguay on Tuesday.

He landed awkwardly after a challenge in the first half of the 2026 World Cup qualifier in Montevideo.

“It’s a very sad time, the worst,” Neymar wrote on Instagram.

“I know I’m strong, but this time I’m going to need my family and friends even more.”

It is unclear how long Neymar will be out for but the usual prognosis for recovery from an ACL rupture or tear can be up to eight to 10 months.

“Brazilian and world football need Neymar healthy and recovered because football is happier when he’s on the pitch,” Brazilian Football Confederation president Ednaldo Rodrigues said in a statement.

Brazil’s all-time male top scorer, who moved to Saudi Arabia in the summer from Paris St-Germain, has struggled with injuries in recent years.

He missed two World Cup games in Qatar last year after he was injured in Brazil’s opener against Serbia.

Neymar had also been sidelined for multiple months of his last two seasons with PSG because of different ankle injuries and his final campaign in France was cut short in February by ankle surgery.

“It’s not easy to go through injury and surgery, imagine going through it all again after four months of recovery,” he added.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the then 22-year-old broke a bone in his back following a bad challenge by Juan Zuniga in the quarter-final against Colombia.

Brazil won that match but Neymar was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament, with his country going on to lose 7-1 to Germany in the semi-finals.

This, according to her, was after frequent headaches, which sometimes resulted in seizures.

As someone who washes clothes for a living, Esther said the condition took a toll on her strength and energy level, so she couldn’t work as she used to – a situation she said made her lose all her customers.

Her husband, Mr Agyam, said they are racing against time, but every attempt by the family to get help has proved futile.

“The deadline we were given for the surgery is long overdue,” he said.

He has therefore appealed to all well-meaning Ghanaians to support Esther to enable her undergo the surgery.

I nearly died twice – Stella Aba Seal shares horrible ordeal in surgery room https://www.adomonline.com/i-nearly-died-twice-stella-aba-seal-shares-horrible-ordeal-in-surgery-room/ Tue, 21 Feb 2023 13:15:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2219528 But for the Lord who showed his undeserving mercies on gospel musician Stella Aba Seal, she would not be among the living.

The musician’s quest to have fibroids removed almost turned fatal due to medical negligence.

Madam Seal, in an interview with Zionfelix, revealed that she had the procedure at one of Ghana’s notable hospitals, and though she was scared, they assured her of excellence.

“It was my very first surgery. I was very scared since my best friend’s mother died from same fibroid surgery so I did not want to be put to sleep. I wanted to see and hear everything but not feel the pain. So they injected me with anesthesia.”

However, Madam Seal said the health workers did not wait for the drug to take effect before they began operating on her.

She recounted how she screamed and went ballistic due to excruciating pain she felt when the side of her stomach was slashed wide open.

“I don’t even want to remember it. I almost died twice. The anesthetist panicked and wanted to administer another one. I began screaming ‘don’t put me to sleep’, but they ignored and injected the drug into my cannula.

Madam Seal said she was dazed but awake and felt everything, including the moment the doctors pushed her womb back into it’s place.

At some point, she narrated that she dozed off and woke up in her private ward, but her pain was far from over.

She was close to death again after her surgery but was saved narrowly by a nurse whose contact she had saved on her phone.

According to her, the anesthetist apologised profusely for the expensive mistake.

“The anesthetist came to me to apologise. She said she was going through a relationship challenge and she was confused. She said it was her fault she should have taken me through test to see if I was numb or not.”

Madam Seal said the apology, coupled with some personal reasons deterred her from suing the hospital as she had intended.

According to her, she has been through a lot of setbacks in life, but that particular incident is still embedded in her memory and she doubts she will ever forget.

Fire Service supports staff to undergo over GH₵62K worth surgery https://www.adomonline.com/fire-service-supports-staff-to-undergo-over-gh%e2%82%b562k-worth-surgery/ Fri, 17 Feb 2023 13:17:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2218065 The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has supported a leading Fireman and astute firefighter, David Darmoe, with over GH₵62K to undergo surgery.

The surgery was to remove a complex tumour in his forehead.

The intervention was after the firefighter stationed at the Sekondi Metro Fire Station in the Western Region sought assistance through his Regional Fire Officer, ACFO I Frederick Ohemeng.

Fantana finally opens up on enhancing her body https://www.adomonline.com/fantana-finally-opens-up-on-enhancing-her-body/ Mon, 18 Jul 2022 15:55:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2138873 Singer and businesswoman, Francine Koffie, popularly known as Fantana, has finally disclosed how she got her recent curvaceous body.

Speaking in an interview with Zionfelix, Fantana said even though people loved her body when she stepped into the showbiz industry, “I had to go and get some things fixed.”

According to her, there is nothing wrong when people patronise plastic surgeries, hence she is proud of her recent “butt and hip” uplift.

Additionally, she said she is not the type that will be fake to people, claiming her current “butt and hip” is not all natural.

“I just fixed it. It was already nice, but I just made it better. There is nothing wrong with it. Some people do it and say they haven’t done anything, which is misleading people. A lot of people follow me, and I wouldn’t lie about it. If you don’t like something about you, go and fix it,” she said.

Talking further, she said, “It was almost perfect, but sometimes you want to be extra… as a musician, people look at me and I will rather fix it. Now my shape is okay for me and I enhanced it to look more curvy. I feel like in America people are okay with it, but in Ghana, they feel shy about it,” Fantana added.

She, however, confirmed that more men are getting attracted to her, unlike, when she first started doing music in Ghana.

Even before I did my [surgery] I did it to feel more confident and not to hide my stomach. A lot of women fix themselves for themselves.  I feel like mine is fine… It’s attracting more men. I’ve always attracted people, but it’s attracting 10 times more.”

When she was asked if she is dating, Fantana said: “I am not married, but I am dating. Because I am not married, men will still come.”

Boy born with two penises forced to have the bigger one chopped off by doctors https://www.adomonline.com/boy-born-with-two-penises-forced-to-have-the-bigger-one-chopped-off-by-doctors/ Thu, 21 Apr 2022 14:20:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2107268 A boy born with two penises has been forced to have the bigger one chopped off by doctors.

The Brazilian lad’s organs were conjoined at the base because of a one-in-five-million condition called Diphallia.

Medics originally planned to let him keep the left one, which was bigger.

But the surgeons changed the procedure after the boy’s mother expressed concerns that he could only urinate from his right.

It comes after a boy in Iraq was reported a boy being born with three penises, a defect known as Triphalia.

Doctors at the Federal University of Sao Paulo acted on the information and successfully carried out the operation in the city.

The first case of Diphallia was recorded in the 1600s and details of the latest report was stated in the Journal of Pediatric Urology.

“Diphallia is a rare anomaly,” the paper begun. “It has a range of appearances from a small accessory penile to complete duplication.

“We present a two year-old boy with complete penile duplication. The left penile was the largest.

“Nuclear Magnetic Resonance suggested one corporal body for each penile and VCUG (Voiding Cystourethrogram) showed a normal urethra in the right penile and stricture at glandular and mid penile urethra of the left penis.

“The cystoscopy through the right penile identified the urethral confluence in the bulbar area. We performed a meatotomy in the left penile to insert the cystoscope and confirmed the blind ending urethra.

“We decided to remove this penile. The penile was degloved entirely and clamped and took out the corpora at the base.”

In conclusion, the journal ended: “The treatment should always be planned individually whereas associated anomalies with the goal of attaining satisfactory functional and cosmetic results.”

Surgeons were able to completely detach his extra penis, meaning the unidentified child wasn’t left with a stump.

Earlier this year, an Uzbekistani boy born with two completely functioning penises.

He lived with the condition for seven years without physical discomfort.

The Siamese twins are conjoined at the head and will need an amount of GH¢3,000,000.00 for surgery to enable them live independently.

A situation that has seen medical doctors at the facility racing against time to separate them.

However, the Chief of staff, Frema Osei Opare, at a press briefing on Monday, July 5, 2021, brought forth the good news.

This is the first time the doctors in the hospital will conduct such a specialised operation .

A Neurosurgeon at the Ridge Hospital, Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, in an interview with JoyNews’ Super Morning Show host, Kojo Yankson, said the operation will be done in various phases.

“A minimum of 45 stages of surgery will be required because when you view the image, the first thing you see is that their heads are joined. There is a bone defect because the brains are attached and you need to work on that. If we are able to separate them successfully, which we hope to, then we should have enough skin to cover up.

North Korean leader, Kim Jun Un in grave danger after surgery https://www.adomonline.com/north-korean-leader-kim-jun-un-in-grave-danger-after-surgery/ Tue, 21 Apr 2020 10:29:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1781974 The United States (US) is monitoring intelligence that suggests North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, is in grave danger after undergoing a previous surgery, according to a US official with direct knowledge.

A second source familiar with the intelligence told CNN that the US has been closely monitoring reports on Kim’s health.

Kim recently missed the celebration of his grandfather’s birthday on April 15, which raised speculation about his well-being. He had been seen four days before that at a government meeting.

Another US official told CNN Monday that the concerns about Kim’s health are credible but the severity is hard to assess.

Daily NK, an online newspaper based in South Korea that focuses on North Korea, reports that Kim reportedly received a cardiovascular system procedure on April 12.Kim received the cardiovascular system procedure because of “excessive smoking, obesity, and overwork,” according to the news site, and is now receiving treatment in a villa in Hyangsan County following his procedure.

After assessing that Kim’s condition had improved, most of the medical team treating him returned to Pyongyang on April 19 and only part of them remained to oversee his recovery situation, according to the news site.

CNN is unable to independently confirm the report.A South Korean source told CNN Monday that the country’s top leaders are very much aware of reports about Kim’s health status but cannot independently verify details published by Daily NK.

The source acknowledged that Kim’s issues related to weight and smoking are well known but made clear they are waiting for more information.South Korea’s Presidential Blue House said in a statement provided to reporters that they have nothing to confirm on reports about Kim’s health and that “no unusual signs” have been detected inside North Korea.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry and Defense Ministry have given a “no comment.”The National Security Council and Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment when reached by CNN on Monday.

CNN has also reached out to the CIA and the State Department for comment. In the meantime, US officials have been reaching out to North Korean experts — particularly those who have studied the Kim regime — to talk about contingency planning, a third source familiar with the communications told CNN.

Still, the situation remains murky as gathering intelligence out of North Korea is notoriously difficult — one of the most challenging targets for US intelligence.

North Korea tightly controls any information surrounding its leader, who is treated almost like a deity within the country. His absences from official state media often spark speculation and rumors about his health.

North Korea has no free press and is often a black hole when it comes to the country’s leadership. Analysts are heavily reliant on scanning state media dispatches and watching propaganda videos for any semblance of a clue.Kim last appeared in North Korean state media on April 11.

North Korea’s most important holiday, the anniversary of the birth of the country’s founding father, Kim Il Sung — came and went without any official mention of Kim Jong Un’s movements.

Experts are unsure of what to make of Kim’s absence from any festivities celebrating his grandfather. When North Korean leaders have not shown up to these important celebrations in the past, it has portended major developments.

But it has also turned out to be nothing.”There have been a number of recent rumors about Kim’s health (smoking, heart, and brain). If Kim is hospitalized, it would explain why he wasn’t present on the important April 15th celebrations,” said Bruce Klingner, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation and former CIA deputy division chief for North Korea. “

But, over the years, there have been a number of false health rumors about Kim Jong-un or his father. We’ll have to wait and see.”Kim Jong Il’s absence from a parade celebrating North Korea’s 60th anniversary in 2008 was followed by rumblings that he was in poor health.

It was later revealed he had a stroke, after which his health continued to decline until his death in 2011.Kim Jong Un disappeared from the public eye for more than a month in 2014, which also prompted speculation about his health.

He returned sporting a cane, and days later South Korean intelligence said that he had a cyst removed from his ankle.”

It’s easy to be wrong on this one,” said John Delury, a professor of international relations at Yonsei University in Seoul.Still, with concerns about Kim’s health mounting, the state of US-South Korean relations has US officials worried, sources tell CNN.

On Monday, President Donald Trump said the two countries have a “great relationship,” but added he wants them to pay more for the US presence in the country.

The two countries have missed multiple deadlines for those negotiations. And now in-person negotiations are hindered because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 11-month-old baby was diagnosed with the condition at the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, and was scheduled for surgery to correct the defect.

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital warned that any further delay could worsen the already complicated condition which can be corrected only by surgery.

The 11-month old baby has abnormal large head and growth at the back.
Family is shattered by the condition of 11-month-old baby

The joy of a young couple to celebrate the birth of a child was short-lived when doctors detected abnormal head and growth at the baby’s back a week later.

It was the beginning of a difficult moment for the young parents who have since known no peace as neighbours stigmatise them over the child’s condition.

“I am so disturbed because I haven’t seen such a thing before. I am in deep pain. The thought of the child’s condition always draw me to tears. My first child shouldn’t be suffering from this,” mother of the baby, Mohammed Ananga Aishatu said in Twi.

There are some who go to the extent of suggesting the parents cruelly end the life of what they believe is a ‘River Baby’, but the answer has been no.

Some people call her River Baby. Others also say I got her from the spirits of a deity. I am confused and don’t know what to do. I have become a laughing stock,” she added.

The couple’s unemployed status means they cannot afford the child’s treatment at the hospital.

The cost of treatment is estimated between GH₵10,000 and GH₵20,000.

“I  sometimes, contemplate ending it all. The thoughts of who will take care of the baby in my absence haunt me,” she revealed.

Out of desperation and frustrations, the parents have resorted to the use of herbal medicine to treat a condition that requires a scientific approach.

She says little has changed ever since she sought herbal treatment.

The herbalist examining the baby

“I met the herbalist, Abubakar Iddrisu, who has been treating little Rafiatu Iddrisu. Abubakar boasts to have cured the condition and several others,” she said.

He disputes the mother’s claim the baby has seen no improvement.

“When they first brought the child, she had a deformity in the head. Thank God, that has improved significantly after applying the concoction. I believe she will get well with time,” he insisted.

The parents organised what they termed a “token” for the herbalist to treat the girl. They have promised a “thank you” for him later if he is able to successfully treat the girl.

Suspected folic deformity

Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital averagely sees eight  hydrocephalus cases each month.

Doctors suspect the hydrocephalus may have developed as a result of a folic acid deficiency in the first three-months of pregnancy.

Dr Dickson Bandoh is Senior Resident, Neuro Surgery  at KATH

A Senior Resident in charge of Neuro Surgery at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr Dickson Bandoh said the child’s condition will degenerate if it is not given urgent attention.

“If this situation is left as it is, it literally means the child’s brain will not grow; which has its own implications for the child’s development. What needs to be done really is to remove the swelling on the child’s back and fix the excess water in the head.”

Dr Bandoh says herbal medicine has no role in the care for the child’s brain and spinal condition, adding, surgery is the only solution for the child’s structural problem.

It entails fixing of a pipe (shunt) from the head to drain excess water into the child’s stomach to reduce the pressure on the brain.

“If there is a structural problem that needs to be addressed, clearly herbal medicine would not be able to do that. So in this child’s instance, what the child needs is surgery. Surgery is the only way forward for this child. Herbal medicine really has no role in the care for this child,” says Dr Bandoh.

Until, perhaps, divine intervention comes, the fate of the baby will continue to hang in a balance.

Heart surgery survival chances ‘better in the afternoon’ https://www.adomonline.com/heart-surgery-survival-chances-better-afternoon/ Sat, 28 Oct 2017 09:40:45 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=616871 Open heart surgery appears to be safer in the afternoon because of the body’s internal clock, scientists have said.

The body clock – or circadian rhythm – is the reason we want to sleep at night, but it also drives huge changes in the way our bodies work.

The research, published in the Lancet, suggests the heart is stronger and better able to withstand surgery in the afternoon than the morning.

And it says the difference is not down to surgeons being tired in the morning.

Doctors need to stop the heart to perform operations including heart valve replacements. This puts the organ under stress as the flow of oxygen to the heart tissue is reduced.

The doctors and researchers looked for complications including heart attacks, heart failure or death after surgery. They found:

One of those involved in the research, Prof Bart Staels, from the Institut Pasteur de Lille, told the BBC News website: “We don’t want to frighten people from having surgery – it’s life saving.”

He also said it would be impossible for hospitals to conduct surgery only after lunch.

But Prof Staels added: “If we can identify patients at highest risk, they will definitely benefit from being pushed into the afternoon and that would be reasonable.”

Obesity and type 2 diabetes have been shown to increase the risk of complications after surgery.

Heart health is already known to fluctuate over the course of a day.

The risk of a heart attack or stroke is highest first thing in the morning, while the heart and lungs work at their peak in the afternoon.

Body Clock

Dr John O’Neill, from the UK Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology, said: “Scientifically it is not hugely surprising, because just like every other cell in the body, heart cells have circadian rhythms that orchestrate their activity.

“Our cardiovascular system has the greatest output around mid/late-afternoon, which explains why professional athletes usually record their best performances around this time.”

Other possible explanations for the findings included surgeons being tired in the morning or their own body clock affecting their surgical skill, particularly if they are not “morning people”.

But Prof Staels said the researchers had gone to great lengths to show that the difference in survival rates was not down to the surgeons.

The French team also experimented on cardiac tissue samples from patients and showed they beat more readily in the afternoon.

And an analysis of the DNA in the samples found 287 genes whose activity showed a circadian rhythm – waxing and waning during the day.

They then moved into mice and used experimental drugs to alter the activity of one of those genes and seemed to be able to reduce the risk of death.

Prof Staels said: “We believe we have identified a potential way to circumvent the disturbing observation that operations in the morning lead to more complications.”

However, that will require more research to confirm.

The researchers are also investigating whether circadian rhythms have an impact on survival in other types of surgery.

Dr Mike Knapton, from the British Heart Foundation, said: “Thousands of people now have open heart surgery in the UK. If this finding can be replicated in other hospitals this could be helpful to surgeons planning their operating list, for non-urgent heart surgery.

Woman undergoes plastic surgery to evade debt https://www.adomonline.com/woman-undergoes-plastic-surgery-evade-debt/ Mon, 14 Aug 2017 10:38:50 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=390181 A 59-year old woman from the central Chinese city of Wuhan transformed her appearance through plastic surgery in order to avoid 25 million yuan ($3.71 million) of personal debts, state news agency Xinhua said.
In a case highlighting the challenges facing China as it tries to establish a “credit society”, police officers were reported to be “astonished” after apprehending the woman, who fled to the southeastern Chinese city of Shenzhen after a court in Wuhan ordered her to pay off her debt.
“We were very surprised at the scene,” the official Xinhua news agency quoted a policeman as saying. “She looked in her thirties and was different from the photos we had.”
The woman, identified as Zhu Najuan, also confessed to using other people’s identity cards to travel across the country by train. She financed her plastic surgery using borrowed bank cards, Xinhua said late on Friday.
Representatives from more than 300 Chinese cities released a declaration earlier in July promising to make more credit available for consumer spending, part of the country’s efforts to find new sources of economic growth and reduce its dependence on heavy industry and state-driven infrastructure investment.
But as the country strives to make more credit available to individuals, it is also facing a surge in household debt, which is estimated to have reached around 50 percent of gross domestic product last year, more than doubling in less than a decade.
As regulators try to establish a reliable nationwide credit rating system, authorities across the country are also exploring new ways to crack down on those who do not pay debts.
According to state media, one court in Jiangsu province has drawn up a blacklist of defaulters. Anyone who telephones an individual on the blacklist will first be forced to listen to a pre-recorded message saying “please urge this person to fulfill their legal obligations”.
Xinhua said the city of Wuhan has also launched a series of crackdowns on debt defaulters, and detained a total of 186 people in the first half of the yea

Man dies from penis enlargement surgery https://www.adomonline.com/man-dies-penis-enlargement-surgery/ Mon, 31 Jul 2017 12:56:12 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=347801 The first case of a man killed by penis enlargement surgery has been reported in Sweden.
A healthy 30-year-old had wanted to increase both the girth and length of his genitals using a process where fat is transferred from his stomach.
Plastic surgeons first carried out the elongation, which involves making an incision to loosen a ligament at the base of the penis.
They then began the enlargement and had planned to inject two fluid ounces of fat cells.
Yet, before they finished the injection, his heart began racing, his oxygen levels fell, and his blood pressure dropped, and he then suffered a heart attack, reports the Journal of Forensic Sciences.
Doctors performed CPR and sent the man to an emergency room, but he died less than two hours later.
The patient, who had mild asthma, but otherwise no past medical history, died from a fat embolism, the report’s authors state.
This occurs when fat tissue passes into the bloodstream and lodges within the blood vessels of the lung and other sites, resulting in respiratory failure.
The paper states that ‘penile elongation and enlargement is considered to be a simple and safe procedure’ but warns that complications may be higher when both procedures are combined.
While this is the first reported death from this kind of surgery, experts say it often leads to other serious problems.
‘It’s a completely useless procedure that never works and disfigures men, and could kill you,’ urologist Tobias Kohler of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota told BuzzFeed News.
He said: ‘This is the worst case, but there are lots of other horrible consequences, from disfigurement to permanent erectile disfunction to even worse.’
Disappointing results
Furthermore, one expert has warned that the risks are not worth taking and results are often disappointing.
Sexual medicine consultant Professor Kevan Wylie said studies that followed men up over a longer time suggest disappointing results, with complications including disfigurement, scarring, lumpiness and infection.
He says the use of biodegradable frames has had better results than fat injection, reports the NHS.
Professor Wylie said: ‘The problem with injecting fat is that over time, the body will re-absorb the fat which can result in a return to the penis’ original size.’
He adds that penis enlargements can result in an average gain in length to the flaccid penis of 2cm, but there will be no change to the size of the erect penis.
Furthermore, the erect penis will not point as high as before the surgery because the ligament which was cut no longer offers support.
‘A lot of men who have this treatment don’t truly appreciate this loss of angle,’ says Professor Wylie.
‘It can make sex quite uncomfortable. You’ve got to do a lot more manoeuvring with your partner. The advantage of a 2cm gain in flaccid length is far outweighed by the loss of angle of erection.’
