Those on half a pint of beer a day are 81 per cent more likely than teetotallers to reach a tenth decade.

Women who drink similar amounts increase by a third their chance of reaching that landmark.

Even blokes who consumed three nips of whisky or two pints daily — double the recommended NHS maximum — are two-thirds more likely to live to that ripe age when compared to abstainers.

The booze habits of 5,500 people were tracked by researchers from Maastricht University in Holland for over two decades.

Lead researcher Prof Dr Piet van den Brandt said: “Our analyses show significantly positive associations between alcohol and longevity in men and women.”

MORE:

One theory is moderate drinking is good for heart health. But too much booze can be toxic, explaining why bingers do badly.

However, the researchers claim their results do not mean teetotallers should hit the bottle.

They said: “The results should not be used as motivation to start drinking.”

But Prof Dame Sally Davies, former Chief Medical Officer, said even one pint a week increases the risk of cancer.

And Sir Ian Gilmore, from Alcohol Health Alliance UK, claimed: “There is no evidence to suggest non-drinkers should start for the good of their health.”

NHS guidelines recommend no more than 14 units of alcohol weekly – roughly six pints of beer or six standard glasses of wine.

Are people willing to forgive unfaithful partners? Here’s what a survey finds https://www.adomonline.com/are-people-willing-to-forgive-unfaithful-partners-heres-what-a-survey-finds/ Fri, 26 Jun 2020 06:45:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1817803 While many people continue to live life in shades of black and white, others are more welcoming of the greys.

A recent survey reveals that contrary to what many people may believe, some people are more willing than others to forgive their partners and give them a second chance, even if they have cheated on them.

Gleeden, an extra-marital dating app, conducted the said survey, to find the dating trends among its users, mostly in the age group of 34-49 years.

The survey saw the participation of some 1,000 users from the cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad.

It was found that while infidelity is a deal-breaker for many people, many more are aware that times are changing. As such, they are willing to give their unfaithful partner a second chance.

In fact, it has been found that while 36.9 per cent of the respondents are willing to forgive their partners without any conditions, 40.1 per cent think the relationship’s future will depend on the reason behind the infidelity.

Some 23 per cent of people say they are going to call it quits if such incidents happen.

It was also found in the survey that while previously people looked for flings and casual relationships when they sought extramarital relationships, now it is a big no-no.

With people’s perspectives changing, the survey revealed that most people are “committing infidelity” when they are “trying to find a companion rather than flashy flings”.

Also, when letting someone know of their actions, most people trust their closest friends. The study states that while 37.5 per cent of Gleeden users are willing to share the secrets about their love affair with their close friends.

31.3 per cent are likely to confess to their siblings. And the remaining 31.2 per cent would like to reveal secrets to their parents and spouses, so as to get rid of the guilt.

Study shows African women use mobile internet more than men https://www.adomonline.com/study-shows-african-women-use-mobile-internet-men/ Sat, 12 Aug 2017 11:24:51 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=386731 A study has found that women in Africa are tech-savvy in the use of mobile internet to empower and entertain themselves compared to men.
It was undertaken by Opera, a global software company and Worldreader, a digital reading non-profit entity, which was made available to the Ghana News Agency.
Opera ran a survey of 1,500 women and men aged 14 to 44 in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa in May 2017 to learn more about their web browsing habits on their mobile phones.
The poll results were later combined with Worldreader insights on the mobile reading habits of 50,000 Worldreader app users in the three countries above. The combined study revealed that women in these three African countries are as tech savvy as men when it comes to browsing the internet using their mobile phones. Women are using their browsers as often as men, with the majority of female survey respondents in Kenya and Nigeria (60 per cent) stating that they access their mobile browsers more than eight times a day to do various internet activities.
Moreover, women tend to purchase bigger data packages than men. Nearly half of female respondents in Kenya said that they spend over KSHS 1,000 (9.62 USD) to buy mobile data plan while only a third of the male respondents are doing so.
Similarly, in Nigeria, around 70 per cent of women who partook in the survey stated that they spend over NGN 1,000 (2.74 USD) to buy a mobile data plan in comparison to 60 per cent of men paying the same amount. Women also lead when it comes to buying big data packages with five times more women buying data 10GB data bundles in Kenya than men.
Both, Opera Software surveys and Worldreader usage data show that women in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa engage with the wider variety of content for entertainment and self-development available on the internet than men.
The statement said female respondents to the Opera survey on average showed a higher percentage of interest for nine out 15 topics. Similarly, Worldreader observes that women are on average accessing more e-books than men using their e-book reading platform. Not only that, Worldreader reports that their female users are reading three times as many pages on average as their male counterparts.
It said women in three African countries are predominately browsing the internet to relax and entertain themselves. By browsing lifestyle, music and entertainment content on Opera and by reading romance, thrillers and other fiction e-books on Worldreader (in some cases up to 10 times as many as men), women in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa are embracing the Internet as a tool for entertainment.
According to Opera, women are more engaged than men with content that can improve their lives, including content related to education, economy, property rights, public services, and health.
It said in all three countries a higher percentage of women than emphasised the need for having access to news via their mobile browser.
Similarly, Worldreader reports that women between 26 and 44 years of age are particularly interested in reading e-books from the Inspiration, Career Development and Children’s sections of the Worldreader library.

Women with big butts have lower risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes – Study https://www.adomonline.com/women-big-butts-lower-risk-heart-attack-stroke-diabetes-study/ Fri, 04 Aug 2017 09:05:12 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=361631 If you had doubts about the benefits of your big bum beyond its sex appeal, worry no more, as a study has found that thin people have a higher risk of killer diseases than fat people, since their fat goes straight to their heart and liver.
German researchers say women who are pear-shaped tend to escape this group, as the bottom and thighs are safer places to store fat on the body.
It means the fat is not transported to the essential organs, where it could lead to high blood pressure, high blood sugar and a greater risk of illness in later life.
The study’s lead author, Dr. Norbert Stefan, from the University of Tübingen, says, “It is better for people of normal weight to be pear-shaped rather than apple-shaped, so that weight is carried on the bottom half of their body rather than around the middle.
“The hips and thighs offer ‘safe storage’ for fat, stopping it from getting into the blood and reaching the organs.”
The researchers found those with bigger thighs and hips could be protecting themselves from diabetes and heart problems however.
Looking at 981 people with a high risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, they found those with smaller hips and thighs were at greater risk. This was based on MRI scans of fat distribution around the body and fitness checks.
Stefan says, “Fat in the hips and thighs is largely different from fat in the abdomen, called visceral fat. In pear-shaped people, these areas work like a sponge, with fat stored in fat cells where it cannot do much harm.”
The study, published in the journal, Cell Metabolism, suggests that putting on hip and leg fat could even be beneficial for some thin people with diabetes or heart problems.
The study suggests that being pear-shaped is better for lean people, while in overweight people it does little to help. The fat levels in their internal organs may already be too high for this to offer extra protection.
It concludes: “Genetic analyses suggest that metabolic risk appears to be determined by different pathways in normal weight and obese subjects.”

Photos: Pupils study under trees at Senchi over abandoned school project https://www.adomonline.com/__trashed-6/ Tue, 11 Jul 2017 16:41:01 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=285581 Pupils at Senchi Methodist JHS in the Eastern region study under trees following a JHS block which has been abandoned after construction started in 2013.
Prior to this, the school depended on an old mud block built several decades ago which has now collapsed making it impossible to use.
This has left the pupils and teachers with no option than having classes and offices under trees respectively.

Apart from classroom block being an issue, two or three pupils are seen sharing a desk meant for one whiles some are seen seated on pieces of blocks.
Headmaster of the school, Samuel Wadie Addo speaking to Adom News’ Kwame Yankah  said even the new structure is a death trap.
“We are not safe at all because the new structure built over fours ago has no pillars support it and we don’t know when disaster will strike. The old one is also not in use because it equally poses danger to both teachers and pupils alike,” he said.
“We have been told it’s a GETFUND project but lack of funds has delayed the project which was to be completed within three months after commencement,” Mr. Wadie Addo revealed.
The headmaster is therefore appealing to the government and relevant bodies to ensure that the abandoned project is completed for use.

The pupils are combined during language class despite some learning Ewe and others, Akuapem Twi.
“It’s very difficult for us to learn two different languages in the same class at the same time. There are inadequate desks for us, no ICT lab, and no staff common room for teachers among a host of challenges the school has,” a pupil indicated.
The pupils are not happy as class could come to a close with a little change in weather.

Meanwhile, Senchi Nifa Dabehene, Nana Addo Ababio I said the situation will have negative impact on the future of the pupils.
“We have done everything within our means but to no avail. The Asuogyaman District Education office is not helping matters by its lukewarm attitude towards the plight of the school. In the just ended BECE, some pupils carried their own desk from home to the exams centre to write their papers,” Nana Ababio said.

Oral sex producing unstoppable bacteria https://www.adomonline.com/oral-sex-producing-unstoppable-bacteria-2/ Fri, 07 Jul 2017 12:58:03 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=277271 Oral sex is producing dangerous gonorrhoea and a decline in condom use is helping it to spread, the World Health Organization has said.

It warns that if someone contracts gonorrhoea, it is now much harder to treat, and in some cases impossible.
The sexually transmitted infection is rapidly developing resistance to antibiotics.
Experts said the situation was “fairly grim” with few new drugs on the horizon.
About 78 million people pick up the STI each year and it can cause infertility.
The World Health Organization analysed data from 77 countries which showed gonorrhoea’s resistance to antibiotics was widespread.
Dr Teodora Wi, from the WHO, said there had even been three cases – in Japan, France and Spain – where the infection was completely untreatable.
She said: “Gonorrhoea is a very smart bug, every time you introduce a new class of antibiotics to treat gonorrhoea, the bug becomes resistant.”
Worryingly, the vast majority of gonorrhoea infections are in poor countries where resistance is harder to detect.
“These cases may just be the tip of the iceberg,” she added.

Throat infection

Gonorrhoea can infect the genitals, rectum and throat, but it is the last that is most concerning health officials.
Dr Wi said antibiotics could lead to bacteria in the back of the throat, including relatives of gonorrhoea, developing resistance.
She said: “When you use antibiotics to treat infections like a normal sore throat, this mixes with the Neisseria species in your throat and this results in resistance.”
Thrusting gonorrhoea bacteria into this environment through oral sex can lead to super-gonorrhoea.
“In the US, resistance [to an antibiotic] came from men having sex with men because of pharyngeal infection,” she added.
A decline in condom use, which had soared because of fears of HIV/Aids, is thought to help the infection spread.

What is gonorrhoea?

The disease is caused by the bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoea.
The infection is spread by unprotected vaginal, oral and anal sex.
Symptoms can include a thick green or yellow discharge from sexual organs, pain when urinating and bleeding between periods.
However, of those infected, about one in 10 heterosexual men and more than three-quarters of women, and gay men, have no easily recognisable symptoms.
Untreated infection can lead to infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and can be passed on to a child during pregnancy.
The World Health Organization is calling on countries to monitor the spread of resistant gonorrhoea and to invest in new drugs.

Dr Manica Balasegaram, from the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership, said: “The situation is fairly grim.
“There are only three drug candidates in the entire drug [development] pipeline and no guarantee any will make it out.”
But ultimately, the WHO said vaccines would be needed to stop gonorrhoea.
Prof Richard Stabler, from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: “Ever since the introduction of penicillin, hailed as a reliable and quick cure, gonorrhoea has developed resistance to all therapeutic antibiotics.
“In the past 15 years therapy has had to change three times following increasing rates of resistance worldwide.
“We are now at a point where we are using the drugs of last resort, but there are worrying signs as treatment failure due to resistant strains has been documented.”

PHOTOS: Students study in dilapidated structure at Bole https://www.adomonline.com/photos-students-study-dilapidated-structure-bole/ Wed, 29 Mar 2017 18:50:16 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=52251 School children at Teselima RC primary school in Bole Bamboi district of the Northern Region study under harrowing condition as district education authorities refused to renovate a near collapse classroom structure.

The school, one of the oldest in the area has been left with deep cracks because it has not been renovated for decades.

The dilapidated structure has been abandoned to collapse on innocent little children.

Rainstorms and other natural phenomenon have taken a huge toll on the structure compelling teachers to send home the children when it rains.

Adom News visited the school and found only a handful of pupil sitting at the corners of the classrooms due to scorching sun.

Some students who spoke to Adom News’ Illiasu Abdul Rauf said snakes and other reptiles invaded the school during classes hours.

The situation, they added has created fear and panic and appealed to government to as a matter of urgency come to their aid.

Some parents are said have withdrawn their wards from the school to assist them at farms while others are also engage in hunting lizards.

A parent who is also the Chairperson of the Parent Teacher Association, Hafisah Sina also called for intervention because their children are now being taught under trees which she said was risky.

She revealed that several appeals to the district education service have fallen on deaf ears.

Describing the development as very dangerous, Hafisah Sina called on government to save the lives of the students.

Meanwhile the Assembly man of the area, David Gyema said the district Assembly has refused to address the matter after several appeals.

He envisaged a catastrophe if government also fail to intervene.
