Antibodies found in Tim Friede’s blood have been shown to protect against fatal doses from a wide range of species in animal tests.

Current therapies have to match the specific species of venomous snake anyone has been bitten by.

But Mr Friede’s 18-year mission could be a significant step in finding a universal antivenom against all snakebites – which kill up to 140,000 people a year and leave three times as many needing amputations or facing permanent disability.

In total, Mr Friede has endured more than 200 bites and more than 700 injections of venom he prepared from some of the world’s deadliest snakes, including multiple species of mambas, cobras, taipans and kraits.

He initially wanted to build up his immunity to protect himself when handling snakes, documenting his exploits on YouTube.

But the former truck mechanic said that he had “completely screwed up” early on when two cobra bites in quick succession left him in a coma.

“I didn’t want to die. I didn’t want to lose a finger. I didn’t want to miss work,” he told the BBC.

Mr Friede’s motivation was to develop better therapies for the rest of the world, explaining: “It just became a lifestyle and I just kept pushing and pushing and pushing as hard as I could push – for the people who are 8,000 miles away from me who die from snakebite”.

‘I’d love to get my hands on some of your blood’

Antivenom is currently made by injecting small doses of snake venom into animals, such as horses. Their immune system fights the venom by producing antibodies and these are harvested to be used as a therapy.

But venom and antivenom have to be closely matched because the toxins in a venomous bite vary from one species to another.

There is even wide variety within the same species – antivenom made from snakes in India is less effective against the same species in Sri Lanka.

A team of researchers began searching for a type of immune defence called broadly neutralising antibodies. Instead of targeting the part of a toxin that makes it unique, they target the parts that are common to entire classes of toxin.

That’s when Dr Jacob Glanville, chief executive of biotech company Centivax, came across Tim Friede.

“Immediately I was like ‘if anybody in the world has developed these broadly neutralising antibodies, it’s going to be him’ and so I reached out,” he said.

“The first call, I was like ‘this might be awkward, but I’d love to get my hands on some of your blood’.”

Mr Friede agreed and the work was given ethical approval because the study would only take blood, rather than giving him more venom.

Jacob Glanville Tim Friede in a lab coat stands in the middle of a busy laboratory where four other researchers are working
Tim Friede, centre, wanted to help develop better therapies for snakebite victims

The team is trying to refine the antibodies further and see if adding a fourth component could lead to total protection against elapid snake venom.

The other class of snake – the vipers – rely more on haemotoxins, which attack the blood, rather than neurotoxins. In total there are around a dozen broad classes of toxin in snake venom, which also includes cytotoxins that directly kill cells.

“I think in the next 10 or 15 years we’ll have something effective against each one of those toxin classes,” said Prof Peter Kwong, one of the researchers at Columbia University.

And the hunt continues inside Mr Friede’s blood samples.

“Tim’s antibodies are really quite extraordinary – he taught his immune system to get this very, very broad recognition,” said Prof Kwong.

The ultimate hope is to have either a single antivenom that can do everything, or one injection for elapids and one for vipers.

Prof Nick Casewell, who is the head of the centre for snakebite research and interventions at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, said the breadth of protection reported was “certainly novel” and provided “a strong piece of evidence” that this was a feasible approach.

“There is no doubt that this work moves the field forwards in an exciting direction.”

But he cautioned there was “much work to do” and that the antivenom still needed extensive testing before it could be used in people.

But for Mr Friede, reaching this stage “makes me feel good”.

“I’m doing something good for humanity and that was very important to me. I’m proud of it. It’s pretty cool.”

Pot with snake and headless vulture discovered at Sehwi Essam market https://www.adomonline.com/pot-with-snake-and-headless-vulture-discovered-at-sehwi-essam-market/ Fri, 11 Nov 2022 12:03:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2182585 Market women of Essam-Debiso were left in utmost shock after a pot containing some items believed to be for ritual purposes was discovered.

The pot containing a live snake and a headless vulture was found wrapped with a black cloth and red bandage and hidden in the heart of the market.

Also included were multiple GH¢5.00 notes (GH¢50.00 in total) and a bottle of Schnapp believed to have been used for libation.

The pot concoction was discovered in the early hours of Thursday when the traders went to the market for business.

They suspect it could be a ritual performed by the ‘sakawa’ people.

Others also apportioned blame to other market women, blaming the low market sales as the possible reason for the ritualistic sighting.

Meanwhile, the Kontihene of Sehwi Essam, Nana Yaw Berimah, said that was the second time such rituals have been found in the Essam market.

He disclosed that in the previous occasion, the chiefs performed rites to cleanse the market, adding that same will be done again.

The pot has been broken and it’s content burnt.

Speaking with YouTuber, Arnold Elavanyo, he mentioned that any spiritual hunter who is well vexed in matters of the spiritual realm can operate with dwarfs physically.

According to him, the role these diminutive mythical beings play are so many while citing that he can sometimes send them to attack people and they will do so physically.

“I have 173 dwarfs, the dwarfs are in the bush. If you are a spiritual hunter, these people can physically meet dwarfs in the bush. They will talk to you live and I talk to them. I talk to my dwarfs and I can speak with my dwarfs in my room and they will come.

“I know the roles they can play for me that is why I say I can fight you spiritually and physically. So when I send them to do my job they will meet you physically and if it is an attack they will attack you physically,” he disclosed.

During the interview, the spiritualist held a snake he called a ‘god’ in his hand. According to him, he uses the snake to protect one’s movement, loved ones and more.

“To protect your life, movement and things one needs protection for, I send the snake. If there is a bad spirit that follows you around, I can send one of my gods(snakes) to come and kill that spirit. It will come both physically and spiritually,” he added.

2-year-old revenges, bites 20-inch snake to death https://www.adomonline.com/2-year-old-revenges-bites-20-inch-snake-to-death/ Sun, 21 Aug 2022 10:33:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2152470 A two-year-old bit a snake to death in Turkey last week after she was struck first.

Newsweek reports the toddler was in her backyard on August 10 when neighbours heard her screaming. They found the child with a 20-inch snake clenched between her teeth.

After a bite mark was found on the girl’s lip, she was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and observation.

“Our neighbours have told me that the snake was in the hand of my child, she was playing with it and then it bit her,” said Mehmet Ercan, the toddler’s father. “Then she bit the snake back as a reaction.” Ercan was away at work when the incident occurred.

The type of the snake is currently unknown, but the toddler’s father revealed she appears to be doing well.

There was some concern since 12 of the 45 species found in Turkey are considered venomous.

Speaking on SVTV Africa, Adu indicated that, the deceased worked for a Chinese-Malaysian who keeps different types of snakes as pets.

“Initially, he told us the snake bit Andrews in the afternoon, but he recovered at the hospital and brought him home. Then he fell unconscious and was sent him back to the hospital. When he was questioned later, he said it happened at midnight. Later, he told us he died at the hospital,” he told DJ Nyaami.

Samuel Adu said they reported the case to the Ghanaian Embassy, where the employer admitted his fault and offered $4500 as compensation which was rejected.

“He admitted that, he should have had an antidote for such cases or made sure his snakes were not poisonous. The Embassy refused the compensation, and he has refused to come for the meeting,” he added.

The Ghana Association in Malaysia President stated that, the Chinese-Malaysian might be hiding some facts from the Embassy.

He noted that, the employer has refused to give Andrews’ phone back to the Embassy.

Man bitten by snake he thought was dead inside a wine bottle he bought for his son https://www.adomonline.com/man-bitten-by-snake-he-thought-was-dead-inside-a-wine-bottle-he-bought-for-his-son/ Fri, 25 Mar 2022 16:07:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2095956 A Chinese father had the shock of his life when a supposedly dead snake inside a jar of snake wine he bought a year ago suddenly bit him.

The man from Heilongjiang Province, China, reportedly bought three jars of snake wine, believing that the drink could help cure his son, who has been suffering from a chronic illness.

Instead of opening the jars, the father purportedly left them untouched for a year so that they could have “enough medicinal properties.”

After the year-long marination, the man claims he decided to finally open the jars and administer the traditional Chinese medicine, only to find that all three of the venomous snakes “came back to life” before one of them bit him.

After being rushed to the hospital, he was treated immediately and reportedly survived the incident.

Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe that snake wine contains several health benefits and can even be a cure for rheumatism, arthritis and the flu.

The drink is often prepared by fitting a snake inside a jar of alcohol, usually rice wine, and leaving it there to marinate for months.

Some experts said that what happened to the father was not entirely strange since snakes can supposedly live inside a jar of alcohol for 12 months without dying, especially if the lid is left slightly open for air to enter.

However, herpetologist Wolfgang Wüster argued that what happened was “biologically impossible.”

“No snake can survive submerged in any kind of liquid in a bottle for more than an hour or so as a maximum,” Wüster told Newsweek.

“Snakes have no magical powers, they are made of flesh and bone like any other animal, and require food, water and oxygen to survive.”

Some snake species are able to enter a state of brumation, which is similar to hibernation for reptiles, when certain conditions are met, such as very low temperatures.

During brumation, they require less oxygen and their metabolism slows.

Kishore Badra of Gambharipatia village was returning home after working in his paddy field on Wednesday night when a snake bit him on his leg.

Badra managed to capture the viper and bit it to death in a bid to take revenge.

“Something bit my leg while I was returning home on foot last night. I switched on my torch and found it to be a poisonous krait snake. In order to take revenge, I took the snake in my hands and bit it repeatedly, killing the viper on the spot,” said Badra.

Following the incident, he returned to his village with the dead snake and told his wife about the incident. Badra was later seen flaunting the carcass.

Some onlookers advised Badra to visit a nearby hospital, but he refused to go to the hospital and instead went to a traditional healer to seek advice the same night.

Badra said on Thursday: “Even though I bit the poisonous krait, I did not feel any difficulty. I went to a traditional healer residing near the village and was cured.”

I spent 7 hours in the same room with a cobra – Popular pastor https://www.adomonline.com/i-spent-7-hours-in-the-same-room-with-a-cobra-popular-pastor/ Sun, 27 Jun 2021 13:31:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1979029 Nigerian Televangelist and Senior Pastor of Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo, has revealed how he spent seven hours in the same room with a cobra.

He narrated that he had worked extra hours in his office, only for a cobra to be found the next day when cleaners showed up to do their job.

“I was in my office and a cobra was found in my wardrobe, third floor of the building and I worked in that floor seven hours in the previous night and in the morning when they were cleaning, there was a cobra and it stood up. It was there all night and I was there.

“Let me tell you this, when you become a lover of God the enemy will leave you alone, because every attempt on your life will bounce back on him,” he recounted.

He said his love for God and his clean heart is the only reason why the devil could not attack him that night.

“You may read all the books I have written but until you discover my heart beat for God, you don’t know my secret.

“God knows I love him, all the devils know I love God and God proves perpetually and unending that I truly love him. So He manifests himself concerning me at His own time. He does it naturally in all the realms,” he said.

Speaking on finances, Pastor Oyedepo advised his congregation to pray for the hand of God to bear their finances.

“Everybody desire supernatural intervention in their finances but there is nothing you earn as wages that will be equal to wealth, it is the blessing of God that make rich and he adds no sorrow it. So, to bring the hand of God to bear on your finances, whatever God says to you to do regarding your finances, do it,” he said.

The python was seen hanging around her neck until it was time to say her final words as pallbearers get ready to carry the body to its final resting place.

A background voice narrating why she embarked on the ritual said the snake bit the tongue of the deceased and that was how he met his untimely death, hence she thought it apt to bury him with what killed him.

According to some friends, the young man used to play with snakes and his close python bit his tongue when he was trying to put it into his mouth.

The wife was seen putting one of his snakes into the casket as part of burial rituals for her late husband.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa constituency, Mr K.T. Hammond, has justified why Ghanaian Members of Parliament (MPs) must be appreciated.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen show, Monday, the lawmaker, whose comment on a new proposed chamber sparked controversy in parliament, said MPs face many challenges to the extent of physically working for their constituents.

“In my own constituency, my constituents asked me to chase a snake in a toilet and kill it. Just imagine, a whole me, being asked to kill a snake because they voted for me. How could I have done that? This is the kind of things we face.

He said unlike other constituents who refuse to rely on their MPs, his constituency has seen major developmental works because he believes the power of the people should not be underestimated.

According to him, such challenges MPs face are the main reasons he is justifying the construction of a new chamber.

A couple at Kotokrom, a community in the Sunyani Municipality on Wednesday fled for their lives when they realised a bag they had brought from a spiritualist for ritual money contained two big live snakes.

The snakes which the couple said were unknowingly in a suitcase in their bedroom for about five days had been killed and burnt by a Pastor they fled to for prayers to save their lives at Kotokrom.

Reverend Isaac Hinneh, the local head Pastor of Living Grace Ministries confirmed to the press in an interview in Sunyani but the names of the couple was not disclosed for security reason.

He said the couple approached him that they went to a spiritualist at Wenchi in the Brong-Ahafo Region for financial assistant and were giving a suitcase supposed to be containing money.

Rev. Hinneh said the spiritualist asked the couple to wake up at midnight to perform some rituals with “some hair” in a paper offered to them before they would open the bag for the money but the hair vanished, so they became afraid.

According to the Pastor, the couple with the suitcase came to his house the following morning and narrated the matter to him.

Rev. Hinneh said he told them to bring the bag to a watch night prayer session and invited two of his colleague Pastors from Chiraa in the Sunyani West District and Tanoso in the Tano North Municipality, also in the Region for prayer support.

He said after praying over the bag they opened it but found two big live snakes in it, adding that the couple immediately fled, leaving the bag and the Pastors to their fate.

Rev. Hinneh said the incident attracted people living around the area to scene, surrounding the church building in their numbers, adding that they therefore killed and burnt the animals.

He advised the general public to depend on the almighty God always for their sources of power and money because spiritualists could only deceive people but did not have anything good to offer humankind.

Fear grips Obuasi after revelation that a god will turn into huge snake https://www.adomonline.com/fear-grips-obuasi-after-revelation-that-a-god-will-turn-into-huge-snake/ https://www.adomonline.com/fear-grips-obuasi-after-revelation-that-a-god-will-turn-into-huge-snake/#comments Thu, 04 Oct 2018 17:03:58 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1378491 There is fear in the Obuasi municipality after a video of Prophet Reinhard Oduro Gyebi, also known as the Eagle Prophet, went viral that a river god in the area would turn into a huge snake in the central business district (CBD) soon.

According to Prophet Oduro Gyebi, whose prophesies are known to be spot on, in recent times, some miners went to seek the help of the river god years ago to help them get a lot of gold, but have ceased performing the agreed rituals since mining in the area went down.

Prophet Oduro Gyebi claimed that he went to pray throughout the night for Accra Mall, following his earlier revelation that there would be a fire outbreak.

His followers believe it was the prophet’s prayer that made God stop that fire outbreak.

ALSO: Kim Kardashian bodyguard sued for $6.1m over Paris robbery

According to him, the river god in Obuasi was, therefore, angry and wants to leave the town, but would turn into a huge snake and crawl through the town to its preferred destination.

The prophet also said things will begin to work well for Obuasi should the snake leave the town but a serious calamity will befall them should they kill the snake on sight.

The revelation, Today learnt, made it very difficult for many traders to go to the central business district (CBD) two weeks ago because they did not know where exactly the snake would appear.

Even though sources say the fear and panic had reduced, many people were still on the lookout for ‘that huge snake.’

A journalist at Obuasi-based Time FM, Kwabena Sikayena, who first broke the story, corroborated the story to this reporter.

According to Mr Sikayena, “it is scary knowing that you may bump into a certain huge snake at any moment.”

Even though he said the residents lived in heightened fear and panic two weeks ago when they broke the news, he said the fear had relatively reduced and people had mastered courage to go about their trading.

But as for residents in and around Sanso, a well-known illegal mining area, a fresh rumour of the snake appearing last Tuesday morning has heightened their panic.

A resident of the area, Barbara Anam told this reporter that the rumour, though unconfirmed, has made them very panicky and prayed for God’s protection.

“Apart from everything, what we even fear is when it appears and someone kills it with a gun, the prophet said we would be doomed should this happen,” she said frighteningly.

A junior high school (JHS) pupil also narrated how she had a dream and saw that the snake had actually appeared and biting people who did not have a certain mark on their foreheads.

Her narration showed how scary people had reacted to the revelation of the prophet to the extent that some were even having nightmares about it.

Adom News reported in August 2017 that snakes had invaded the regional office, leaving staff in fear.

The staff complained of insects and other wild reptiles which had made the facility their home.

The report revealed how the dilapidated nature of the offices was making working at the facility very difficult and general life uncomfortable.

But a recent visit to the place after a year of those reports paints a different picture and a marked improvement in the situation.

Staff at the regional office said work was being smooth as they no longer work in fear.

In a veiled message via its Twitter handle, the EFCC said: “The Eagle shows no mercy for money-swallowing snake(s).”
The message was accompanied by an eagle that had trapped a snake in its claws.

The EFCC’s official logo is of an eagle with the country’s coat of arms on it.
Nigerian social media space is still buzzing over a report over the weekend in a local portal that a clerk had told auditors that missing state funds had been ‘eaten’ by a mysterious snake.
The missing funds belong to the country’s Joints Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), a state agency responsible for the registration of admissions for people seeking to enter the various universities.
JAMB has since suspended the clerk and vowed to unravel the mystery.
The particular incident took place at the JAMB offices in Makurdi, capital of Benue State where the clerk in answering audit queries said her housemaid and a fellow employee had confessed to ‘spiritually’ stealing the monies she kept in an office vault.
Auditors from the capital Abuja had been sent to take inventory of funds accrued over the sale of scratch cards to students hoping to gain access to JAMB’s website to register or check on the status of their admissions.
The audit came up after reforms by the current registrar struck out the use of the cards.

Snake catcher called to woman's home to remove rubber strap https://www.adomonline.com/snake-catcher-called-womans-home-remove-rubber-strap/ Wed, 01 Nov 2017 06:07:45 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=625761 An Australian snake catcher was called to the home of a panicked woman who spotted a serpent in her yard — but the supposed snake wasn’t what it seemed.
Stuart McKenzie of The Snake Catcher 24/7 Sunshine Coast said in a Facebook post that a Sippy Downs, Queensland, woman called recently to request a snake removal in her yard.
“She rang and said ‘I think there is a snake in the backyard, I am sitting still for the time being, can you get someone out as soon as possible?'” McKenzie told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“She seemed quite stressed over the phone and I got someone there ASAP,” McKenzie wrote on Facebook.

McKenzie sent an employee to the woman’s home to catch what was initially suspected to be a red-bellied black snake, but turned out to be a rubber strap.
“They both sort of had a laugh, in the end I think she was a bit relieved it wasn’t a snake,” he said.

Man finds python wrapped around bird cage https://www.adomonline.com/man-finds-python-wrapped-around-bird-cage/ Tue, 31 Oct 2017 07:52:23 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=622931 A pet parrot in Singapore has been rescued from the jaws of death, after its owners discovered a huge python coiled around their bird’s cage.

The 1.5m long (5ft) snake was found on Monday in Melvin Yap’s home.

Mr Yap extricated the python with a stick, and passed it to an animal rescue group. He told the BBC that their pet bird, named Nikki, survived unharmed, but was “petrified”.

Large snakes are not uncommon in Singapore, which has abundant wildlife.

‘I woke up to screams’

Mr Yap said he was still sleeping early on Monday morning when he was woken up by frantic screams in the house.

“My domestic helper was in the process of cleaning the bird’s cage. The snake was just right in front of her, and she didn’t see it until my wife spotted it and screamed ‘Snake!’,” he said.

“There was mayhem and panic.”

Mr Yap rushed downstairs along with his 10-year-old daughter, who assisted him as he “coaxed” the snake into a large plastic bag with a stick.

They later put it into an unused fish tank “so it wouldn’t suffocate”, and called a local animal rescue group which took it away later that afternoon.

His encounter, which was covered by local media outlets, drew astonished responses from Singaporeans, not least for the way in which he caught the reptile. “STICK and PLASTIC BAG???? Salute ah!” wrote one incredulous Facebook commenter.

But Mr Yap said he “just wanted to quickly contain the situation, and ensure my loved ones didn’t get hurt”.

“After I caught it, I realised it was more scared of us than the other way round. It was in defensive mode, curling up and trying to protect itself.”

He added that his family grew less fearful of the snake once they realised it was a python, which does not have a venomous bite.

Baby pythons had been previously spotted in neighbouring homes, though they were often killed, said Mr Yap, whose home is near a forested area.

Singapore, a densely-built island that still has thriving pockets of primary rainforest, has seen increasing human-wildlife encounters in recent years, involving wild boars, deer, snakes, and monkeys.

There have also been reports of giant pythons, which are common in South East Asia, attacking people. In March this year an Indonesian man was apparently swallowed by a python, while earlier this month another Indonesian was badly hurt after wrestling with a python – which was subsequently killed and eaten.

But Mr Yap said he did not want to harm the snake which slithered into his home.

“We’re stewards of the environment and the creatures who live in it. I’m just grateful and appreciative of the encounter,” said the 46-year-old animal lover, though he admitted his wife “still has some concerns about lurking snakes”.

Meanwhile, Nikki appears to still be recovering from its near-death experience.

“Usually in the morning it loves to chirp, but this morning it was extremely quiet. No noise from the poor bird,” said Mr Yap. “I think we’ll have to give it more sunflower seeds as a treat.”

Afadzato South poised to develop its snake village https://www.adomonline.com/afadzato-south-poised-develop-snake-village/ Mon, 25 Sep 2017 08:09:55 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=519541 The Afadzato South District Assembly at Golokuati in the Volta Region is leaving no stone unturned in developing its tourist attraction sites into viable places for tourists and the citizens alike.

One of such attractions is the snake village at Liati Soba.

Afadzato South is one of the youngest districts of the Volta Region with a lot of tourist attractions.

The district which was carved out of the existing Hohoe Municipality currently harbors sections of the ever deteriorating Eastern Corridor road.

One of the almost forgotten and neglected tourist sites of the district is the snake village at Liati Soba which in the past provided home for more than 15 types of snakes including a 1.7 metre long python which escaped in 2015 due to the poor conditions at the village.

Manager in-charge of the village, Gado Safiu told Joy News that he is collaborating with the Assembly and other stakeholders to help develop the snake village into a better tourist site.

According to him, efforts are also underway to add more snakes to the Ball Python and Viper which are currently at the village.

DCE for the area, Lawyer Wisdom Semanu Seneadza told Joy News that the tourist sector in the district is key to the area’s development, adding that the poor road infrastructure would be dealt with under some policy interventions of government.

Lawyer  Seneadza  hopes something is done about this in terms of developing the area into a tourist site.

Snake bites Police recruit whilst defecating in bush https://www.adomonline.com/snake-bites-police-recruit-whilst-defecating-bush/ https://www.adomonline.com/snake-bites-police-recruit-whilst-defecating-bush/#comments Fri, 08 Sep 2017 13:17:02 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=476321 One of the recruits at the Police Public Safety Training School (PPSTS) in the Upper East region has suffered a snakebite whilst answering the call of nature in the bush at night.

A chronic water crisis at the school has rendered its flush toilets inoperative whereupon close to a thousand recruits, more than 400 of whom are females, now have to squat dangerously in the bush to ease themselves.

“We have recorded one snake bite,” the Director of the school, ACP Adusah Poku, told Starr News Thursday. “He was taken to the hospital. We also have anti-snake venom here; so, we took it along. Now, the bush is overgrowing. If you go there, you can have problems.”

He disclosed further: “We have a 20-room toilet facility but we cannot use it because we don’t have the water to flush it. As for bathing, the recruits can get some water to bathe. The only water we have is for their feeding and for their bathing. But for the flushing, we don’t have the water. So, they have to go into the bush to ease themselves.”

A number of recruits rushed into the bush after the recruit (name withheld) gave a shout of horror during the snake attack, but the poisonous reptile had slithered away through the bush. The victim, whilst in pain, could only describe the snake as thick and short, as he pointed in the direction the snake went and grabbed his leg where it had sunk its fangs.

Meanwhile, authorities have advised all recruits to get a torch to lead the way when they are heading for the bush at night and a cutlass to use for burying the waste when they are done.

“Fortunately, the recruit survived the snake attack. But we’ve made them (the recruits) to acquire torchlights and they go there with a cutlass. If they go there without a cutlass and they defecate around, you can’t go there the next day. Over 800 recruits going to the bush, can you go there every day? That is why they have to dig a hole and cover it so that the next day they can still go there,” the Director said.

The good and the ugly

The institution, established in 2005, was formerly known as the Pwalugu Police Training School, training only recruits.

It was converted in 2014 into Police Public Safety Training School to groom recruits into police officers and to conduct international training programmes for both junior and senior police ranks on how to effectively counter cross-border terrorism attacks, armed robbery operations, and illegal mining activities among other high-risk security missions.

Despite the upgrade, the school still lacks some requisite structures that befit an institution of that status. It’s dormitories and classrooms need serious expansion so trainees can be conveniently accommodated.

The school’s computer laboratory is big but boring. The 30 sets of computers found in the laboratory are not internet-connected. The administration wants a barbed-wire fence wall but that dream is yet far from start.

But the good news is that a road network with drains is being constructed on the campus. The old lamentations over the lack of security lights are also over. The area is now well lit with photo-sensor skylite lamps. Besides, a contractor is about to finish and hand over a brand new 100-metre parade ground to the administration.

Above all, the UniBank Ghana Limited is making efforts to provide the school with a concrete overhead water tank to bring an end to the water crisis. ACP Poku spoke of the UniBank intervention: “We have brought experts and a contractor. They have taken the measurements already.Community Water and Sanitation officials also came and took the estimates. They are studying it. We are only awaiting approval for the construction to start.”

Hawk with snake in claws caused 40-acre Montana fire https://www.adomonline.com/hawk-snake-claws-caused-40-acre-montana-fire/ Mon, 28 Aug 2017 06:35:49 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=436961 Firefighters in Montana believe they identified the source of a massive fire after finding the charred carcass of a hawk carrying a snake.
Black Eagle Volunteer Fire Department officials believe the hawk was attempting to carry its prey home when the snake made contact with an electrical wire, causing sparks that triggered a 40-acre fire.
“It was electrocuted, but it wasn’t shot or anything, like that you could tell where the snake had touched the wire. I think he was setting up on the pole itself and the snake touched the wire, which the pole is grounded and then it went out the bird and it went from there,” department spokesman Dusty Thompson told KRTV.
Kyra Vanisko, who snapped photos of the hawk, told USA Today Network it was exciting to discover the bird managed to hold on to its prey throughout the blaze.
“It was just awesome,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting to find a hawk with a snake in its claws still.”
Vanisko said the hawk was about the size of a small cat, but was unable to make out its species due to its condition.
“He’s a crispy critter,” she said.
The large fire caused damage to about six electrical poles and resulted in power outages throughout the area.
NorthWestern Energy spokesman said it was not uncommon for animals to cause outages after making contact with electrical equipment, but this situation was a first.
“I have dealt with outages caused by squirrels, beavers, geese, raptors and even snakes,” he said. “But this is my first experience with a hawk-snake combination.”

Video: Big Snake regurgitating another live snake is fascinating https://www.adomonline.com/video-big-snake-regurgitating-another-live-snake-fascinating/ Wed, 31 May 2017 07:21:33 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=143991

It’s fascinating — but mostly gross.

Viral video of a big snake regurgitating another serpent that’s still alive might be one of the creepiest, WTF reptile moments caught on camera. It’s seriously… eek!

Christopher Reynolds filmed the predator and its fully swallowed prey under some leaves in Newton, Texas, National Geographic reported Monday.

Reynolds guessed that his presence might have scared the black snake from fully digesting its meal, the magazine noted. He said it was the slithery victim’s “super, ultra, lottery-lucky day.”

But for anyone who watches this, it might not be your lucky day if you’re about to eat.

In the YouTube video Reynolds posted Saturday, he wrote that he caught the spectacle while driving home from his mother’s with his wife, Nina. She suggested he film it.

“I am happy I did,” he said.

Workers find abandoned snake in hotel room drawer https://www.adomonline.com/workers-find-abandoned-snake-hotel-room-drawer/ Thu, 13 Apr 2017 06:52:55 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=75331 Cleaning staff at a Massachusetts hotel discovered a 5-foot reticulated python abandoned in a drawer inside a room that had recently been vacated.

Rod Dazivasen, general manager of the Central Mass. Aquatics pet store, said animal control officers were called April 5 to the Marriott Residence Inn in Worcester to remove what was initially thought to be a 5-foot-long ball python from a drawer in one of the hotel’s rooms.

“He may be two years old but he’s not an old snake,” Dzivasen told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. “Why on earth they had him in a hotel room is beyond me.”

Police said they were unable to locate the person who had been staying in the room.

“We tried to find the owner, but he gave the clerk a fake name and just disappeared,” animal control officer Patrick Cherry told The Boston Globe.

Richard Wilson, owner of Central Mass. Aquatics, said the snake is now being taken to New England Reptile Distributors in Plaistow, N.H., after experts identified it as a golden child reticulated python, which can grow to up to 18 feet long and are illegal to keep without a permit in Massachusetts.
