The Three Lions emerged 2-1 victors after Jude Bellingham levelled with an injury-time overhead kick, before captain Harry Kane notched the decisive strike in extra time.

Stones, speaking as England prepared for Saturday’s quarter-final against Switzerland (17:00), said the success will “change a lot of things”.

“It shows that unity, and togetherness, as a team,” said the 30-year-old defender.

“When you have done those things, you can believe you can do it better, and when it gets tough you can always recap to these moments.”

Stones felt England were heading for an early exit before their late fightback – and will now use that performance as “fuel” for the rest of the tournament.

“I thought we were going home up to 60 minutes into the game,” he added.

“To change the mindset, and for us all to keep the belief, it has a lot of power behind it – for ourselves and other teams.”

The Manchester City centre-back also said he is “all good” despite appearing in training with heavy strapping around his knee on Wednesday.

Stones will have to find a new centre-back partner with Marc Guehi suspended for Saturday’s quarter-final, which is being shown live on the BBC.

Criticism makes Southgate ‘want to win even more’

Manager Gareth Southgate will take charge of his 100th game at the weekend, but it hasn’t been easy for the England boss at Euro 2024.

His side have faced jeers – and even some cups being thrown by angry supporters – amid underwhelming performances, but they were greeted by a better reaction after beating Slovakia.

Stones said the criticism Southgate has faced will further motivate the Three Lions manager.

He added: “He pushes it aside, I can only comment on how that’ll only affect him in a good way. It will make him want to win even more, do better. It gets brushed aside very quickly.”

As Southgate nears his landmark century, Stones praised the way the 53-year-old has changed the national team’s “culture” as they look to win a first major trophy.

“The great attributes and qualities he has as a manager – he’s simple and clear with what he wants,” added Stones.

“To be here and try to leave a mark in this tournament is important and we have that goal at the end of it, to do something that has not been done before.”

Teamwork can beat England ‘individual quality’ – Skriniar https://www.adomonline.com/teamwork-can-beat-england-individual-quality-skriniar/ Sat, 29 Jun 2024 07:10:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2415245 Slovakia captain Milan Skriniar says they can beat England because they work as a team and not as individuals.

England play Slovakia, who advanced as one of the best third-placed sides, in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday for a place in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

And Skriniar says his side have an opportunity to cause a major upset as they do not depend on star players, like the Three Lions.

“They [England] rely on individual quality and they know that they have players who can decide matches for them,” the Paris St-Germain defender said.

“That is why I think we can handle them through teamwork.”

Skriniar, 29, added that Gareth Southgate’s side go into the match under more presssure than Slovakia.

“Even in their first match [against Serbia], they went in with the fact that they are England, and they have to manage things in terms of results,” he said.

“The media and fans have been critical after their matches, so they will be under much more pressure than us. It can work in our favour.”

Slovakia finished third in Group E on four points, the first time in Euros history that all four teams within a group have finished on the same points.

Previously, they were knocked out of the last 16 by Germany in 2016, and then failed to make it out of the group at Euro 2020 when England finished as runners-up to Italy.

Euro 2024: Romania and Slovakia reach last 16 with draw https://www.adomonline.com/euro-2024-romania-and-slovakia-reach-last-16-with-draw/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 21:04:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2414004 Romania finished top of Group E as they and Slovakia reached the last 16 at Euro 2024 with an entertaining draw in Frankfurt.

Ondrej Duda gave Slovakia a 24th-minute lead when he got in behind the Romanian defence to power in a header from Juraj Kucka’s pinpoint cross.

Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent, and Romania equalised before half-time as Razvan Marin fired a ferocious penalty into the top corner after David Hancko fouled Ianis Hagi in the box.

They finished top, with Belgium second in the group after a draw with Ukraine, who were eliminated.

Slovakia advance as one of the best third-placed sides and could face England in the last 16.

Confirmation of their opponents will come after the final Group F fixtures which take place this evening (20:00 BST).

It was the first time in Euros history that all four teams within a single group have finished on the same points.

Euro 2024: Yaremchuk scores winner as Ukraine beat Slovakia https://www.adomonline.com/euro-2024-yaremchuk-scores-winner-as-ukraine-beat-slovakia/ Fri, 21 Jun 2024 15:27:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2411693 Roman Yaremchuk scored a crucial winner for Ukraine as they bravely fought back from behind to beat Slovakia and keep their Euro 2024 campaign alive.

The Valencia striker had been on the pitch for 13 minutes when he gave his side the lead.

Yaremchuk was alert to Mykola Shaparenko’s ball over the top and finished smartly.

A brilliant touch allowed him to delicately nudge the ball past Slovakia goalkeeper Martin Dubravka into the bottom left corner from six yards out.

Ivan Schranz scored after 17 minutes to put Slovakia in front, with his second goal in as many games, before Ukraine came back to seal a huge victory.

Shaparenko equalised for Ukraine in the 54th minute, sweeping home from close range following Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross, before Yaremchuk made sure of three priceless points ten minutes from time.

Ukraine move level on points with opponents Slovakia and Romania, who play their second group-stage match against Belgium on Saturday.

Serhii Rebrov’s side were below par in the first half, despite creating plenty of chances.

The decision to drop Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin was tested in the opening 10 minutes when replacement Anatolii Trubin made two crucial saves.

He denied Haraslin’s low-angled finish with his legs and then thwarted Schranz from close range.

Trubin was called into action again, saving David Hancko’s free-kick which he palmed out for a throw-in.

Hancko took the resulting set-piece and found Lukas Haraslin who got in behind the Ukraine defence with ease and swung in a cross which was pounced upon by Schranz.

Mykhailo Mudryk initially struggled to impose himself on the game and had a wild shot when through on goal

He did improve and passed to Artem Dovbyk who performed some clever footwork in the box with his shot at the near post blocked by Peter Pekarik.

However, Ukraine’s second-half showing highlighted the fighting spirit in their side as they kept going after Shaparenko’s equaliser and were rewarded when Yaremchuk sealed the victory, becoming just the second Ukrainian substitute to score at a major tournament.

There were emotional scenes at full-time with Yaremchuk in tears as the Ukrainian players applauded their fans after a much-needed victory.

Late drama as Slovakia shock Belgium at Euro 2024 https://www.adomonline.com/late-drama-as-slovakia-shock-belgium-at-euro-2024/ Mon, 17 Jun 2024 21:44:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2409835 Slovakia caused an upset in their Euro 2024 opener as they stunned Group E favourites Belgium in a chaotic encounter in Frankfurt.

There was drama in the final minutes as Romelu Lukaku thought he had equalised, only for the video assistant referee (VAR) to rule it out for handball in the build-up.

It was the second goal he had scored that had been ruled out by VAR after earlier poking in a header across goal from Amadou Onana.

Ivan Schranz put Slovakia ahead when he capitalised on a mistake at the back by Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku, stunning Belgium, ranked third in the world – Slovakia are 45 places below in 48th.

After missing countless chances throughout, several falling to all-time top scorer Lukaku, Belgium eventually left empty-handed.

In a topsy-turvy 90 minutes, substitute Johan Bakayoko was denied by a superb goalline clearance from Slovakia’s David Hancko.

Lukaku’s frustrations grew as chances kept passing by – the best coming within three minutes after Doku had gone on a spectacular run down the right.

Belgium’s inability to grasp control meant they trailed at the break, with Doku’s costly mistake helping Slovakia get the upper hand.

Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne remained a threat, while Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard curled an effort over the bar following a poor clearance from goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Lukas Haraslin also came close on occasions for Slovakia, fizzing a superbly executed volley towards goal which needed saving by Koen Casteels, before placing another strike wide in the second half.

Belgium, who exited the 2022 World Cup at the group stage, must respond when they take on Romania next – a side who recorded a stunning 3-0 win over Ukraine in the other match on Monday afternoon.

As Belgium travel to Cologne on Saturday looking to regain ground, Slovakia face Ukraine, no doubt buoyed by their perfect start to Euro 2024.
