The marathon, held at Heroes’ Park in Kumasi’s Baba Yara Stadium, began in the early hours of December 21, 2024, and concluded on December 25, 2024.

The 34-year-old performer sang over 200 Ghanaian songs across gospel, highlife, afrobeat, and hiplife genres, showcasing not only her stamina but also her pride in Ghanaian culture.

Following the event, Afua Asantewaa expressed her joy and fulfillment, saying, “I feel truly accomplished, especially knowing I succeeded in promoting Ghanaian music.”

She extended gratitude to her dedicated team, which included Gladys Osei Owiredu (manager), Kofi Owusu Aduonum (husband and Head of PR), Fredrick Fosu, Kelvin Abban (Creatives), and Isaac Amponsah (Operations).

This attempt follows a previous effort in 2023, during which she sang for 126 hours but did not qualify to break the standing record of 105 hours held by India’s Sunil Waghmare. Undeterred by that outcome, she remains optimistic about the validation of this latest performance.

Path to Verification

In the coming days, Afua Asantewaa and her team will submit evidence of her performance to the Guinness World Records for review. The organization will assess the documentation to confirm if her attempt meets the criteria for the record.

In a social media post on November 15, 2024, Afua revealed that the highly anticipated event is set to take place on December 21, 2024.

However, she did not disclose the exact duration of her upcoming challenge.

“Here we go!!! I’m excited and ready,” she captioned.

The announcement has since garnered widespread support, with numerous fans, celebrities, and fellow Ghanaians commending her determination.

Many have praised her resilience and encouraged her not to give up on her dream.

Afua first attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the “Longest Singing Marathon by an Individual” in December 2023.

The event, held from December 24 to 29, received overwhelming support from Ghanaians both locally and abroad.

Despite the successful execution of the event, her attempt was disqualified by Guinness World Records due to breaches of certain guidelines.

Asantewaa’s team submitted the video evidence to Guinness World Records last Saturday for review and confirmation.

She attempted a five-day singing marathon that begun at midnight on Sunday, December 24, 2023, to surpass the former record of 105 hours record set by an Indian artiste Sunil Waghmare in 2012. She ended at 7:00am on Friday, December 29, 2023.

Her event attracted a lot of celebrities and public figures including the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Alan Kyeremanten, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, Adina, Sista Afia, Wendy Shay, among others.

Many public figures and personalities including the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Alan Kyeremanten, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Berla Mundi and several others visited the Akwaaba Village to cheer Asantewaa up during her sing-a-thon.

Afua Asantewaa began her journey to beat the current record of 105 hours on Sunday, 24 December midnight and concluded at 7:00 am on December 29 with 126 hours, 52 minutes.

Afua Asantewaa in an X post expressed gratitude and appreciated the efforts of every Ghanaian who motivated her.

The current record is held by Sunil Waghmare from India which lasted for 105 hours.

Afua kicked off her singing to beat the record at exactly midnight on Sunday, December 24th and is still on her journey at the Akwaaba village in Accra.

She has garnered support from many public figures and individuals who have visited the venue to support her including Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Alan Kyeremanten, John Dumelo, Nana Ama McBrown, Berla Mundi, Sarkodie and many other celebrities.

According to him, her attempt has brought global attention to Ghana, allowing the country to showcase its potential.

“She has some 25 hours left to break the existing record and her tenacity is worth celebrating. Her effort has brought global attention to Ghana and a chance to showcase the strength, agency, and industry of Ghanaian women,” Mahama shared on his official X page.

John Mahama adds to the large number of public figures who have shown support for Afua Asantewaa.

The Vice President showed up on Day two of the singing marathon, hours after he sent good wishes to her through social media.

“Your passion and talent shine brightly, and I’m confident you’ll definitely make history. Keep singing your heart out! We are with you,” he wrote on his official Facebook page.

Other Ghanaian celebrities including Nana Ama McBrown, Sista Afia, Cina Soul, Clemento Suarez, Lawyer Nti, and OB Amponsah are among the few who have thronged the venue to the attempt.

The TikToker, Jasmine Sing began her attempt earlier this week and plans to continue for 120 hours. She is attempting to break the existing record of 117 hours set in 2012.

Although her attempt seemingly began on a quiet note, she announced her plans to embark on this journey on TikTok in October.

Ghanaian journalist, Afua Asantewaa is also planning on breaking the same 117-hour existing record and plans to sing for 120 hours. 

This has got some social media users debating on whether Asantewaa would extend her time beyond 120 hours.

“I would have loved Ebony to be there with me in the booth. Her passion for music and her stagecraft and I could easily resonate with her, I used to tell my husband anytime she was performing that I could do exactly what she was doing, she made music easier for me, you could tell that she had a free spirit regardless of anything she was going through” she said.

“I am her number one fan if there is something like zero then I am. All I will say is that wherever she is she made her impact that I don’t think anybody can fill in her shoes. She has touched a soul and we say thank you” Afua added.

Speaking to Roselyn Felli on Prime Morning, Afua said she is a Sports journalist but had to suspend that for the sing-a-thon.

“I think sometimes when you find your purpose it conflicts with your profession so you have to decide. I found my purpose and I went for it. I nearly went back into journalism before this came especially sports journalism. I really had passion for sports and I wanted to channel towards the female sports journalism but immediately I started, this came so I had to put it on hold” she said.

Afua who is a wife and mother of three girls also mentioned that, aside from sing-a-thon, she is a devoted humanitarian, empowering women and young girls in Africa.

“I am an entrepreneur, I do events, and reality shows mainly for women to empower them. I didn’t get the opportunity to be groomed by anyone so the little knowledge I gathered from those I look up to, I want to impact on the younger ones” she noted.

Asantewaa in response to plans after her record attempt said she has no intentions of becoming a musician, reiterating that she is only seeking to promote Ghana music with her attempt.

“I don’t know what the future holds and never say never but I don’t think I was destined to be a musician. I don’t intend on becoming a musician. I’m doing this for the industry after this I’ll go back to work” she added.

The event originally slated for the Aviation Social Centre will now be held at the Akwaaba Village near the Airport Round About in Accra.

The GTA in a statement on December 12, 2023 explained that, the change of the event venue is to “help accommodate the huge numbers who have expressed interest in attending to support Afua break the record.”

Asantewaa will be singing only Ghanaian songs continuously for five days, with a five-minute break every hour in a deliberate attempt to promote Ghanaian music to the world.

The record-breaking attempt will begin on December 24th to 27th 2023.

“I realize the mileage this opportunity gave Nigerians even though it was through cooking, so I thought it wise that we could equally do the same using the same platforms to push Ghanaian music, it’s not a personal benefit attempt, it’s for the music industry” she shared on Daybreak Hitz.

Asantewaa will be singing only Ghanaian songs continuously for 5 days, with a five-minute break every hour.

“I will sing for five days singing only Ghanaian songs. Per the guidelines, I have a minute break after each hour and the longer you break the more deductions they make at the end of the marathon” she said.

The event will commence on December 24.
