Colombian Sen. Miguel Uribe Turbay, a possible candidate in the country’s presidential election next year, was shot and wounded at a campaign rally in Bogota on Saturday, authorities said.

His conservative Democratic Center party released a statement calling it “an unacceptable act of violence.”

The attack took place in a park in the Fontibon neighborhood when armed assailants shot him from behind, said the right-wing Democratic Center, which was the party of former President Alvaro Uribe. The men are not related.

Images circulating on social media showed Uribe Turbay, 39, covered in blood being held by several people. A medical report from the Santa Fe Foundation hospital said the senator was admitted in critical condition and is undergoing a “neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedure.”

“Miguel is fighting for his life,” his wife, María Claudia Tarazona, wrote on the senator’s X account, urging Colombians to pray for him.

The Attorney General’s Office, which is investigating the shooting, said the senator received two gunshot wounds in the attack, which wounded two others. The statement from the office said a 15-year-old boy was arrested at the scene with a firearm.

Colombia’s government said it was offering a reward for the capture of all those responsible.

“Respect life, that’s the red line,” President Gustavo Petro said in a message posted on his X account. Shortly after making the post, Petro canceled a planned trip to France “due to the seriousness of the events,” according to a presidential statement.

Late Saturday night, after leading an extraordinary Security Council session, Colombia’s first leftist president promised “complete transparency” in the investigation and to find the intellectual authors of the attack. He also promised an investigation into any failures by the senator’s bodyguards.

Colombian police chief Gen. Carlos Triana said that at the time of the attack Uribe Turbay was accompanied by Councilman Andrés Barrios and 20 other people. A minor who allegedly participated in the attack was apprehended at the scene and was being treated for a leg injury, he said.

“I have ordered the Colombian military and police forces and intelligence agencies to deploy all their capabilities to urgently clarify the facts,” said Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on X that the “United State condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempted assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe.” and he urged President Petro “to dial back the inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials.”

“This is a direct threat to democracy and the result of the violent leftist rhetoric coming from the highest levels of the Colombian government,” Rubio said.

Reactions poured in from around Latin America, with Chilean President Gabriel Boric saying “there is no room or justification for violence in a democracy,” and Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa saying “we condemn all forms of violence and intolerance.” Both presidents offered solidarity to the senator’s family.

In Colombia, former President Uribe said “they attacked the hope of the country, a great husband, father, son, brother, a great colleague.”

Fear grips Nkawkaw Zongo residents over shooting incident https://www.adomonline.com/fear-grips-nkawkaw-zongo-residents-over-shooting-incident/ Wed, 21 May 2025 14:04:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536968 Residents of Nkawkaw Zongo in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region have been thrown into fear and panic following a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of three Fulani men.

The victims — Mohammed Wanto (47), Abubakari Abdallah (57), and Abubakar Mohammed (56) — were ambushed by unknown masked gunmen at their usual gathering spot, a veterinary shop near Nkawkaw Zongo Barracks, on the evening of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, around 8:00 p.m.

Eyewitnesses reported that two men died instantly, while the third initially escaped but was pursued and fatally shot shortly after. During the attack, a young boy sustained serious gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital.

The brazen nature of the shooting in a public place has left residents terrified, prompting many to flee the area that night. Calls for urgent government intervention are growing louder, with community members demanding either relocation of the Fulani community or enhanced security to prevent further violence.

Halidu Tamimu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu West, has assured residents that measures are underway to strengthen security.

The Assembly is collaborating with the Minister for Communication, Sam George, and the CEO of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Richard Karikari Kevor, to install CCTV cameras along the Zongo–Akuajoo stretch to monitor activities and deter criminals.

The Nkawkaw Central Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the killings. Although the attackers remain unidentified, police say they are pursuing multiple leads to determine the motive and apprehend those responsible.

The tragic incident has heightened tensions in Nkawkaw Zongo as residents anxiously await swift justice and restored peace.

Asiyaw Sand Dispute: Five killed in shooting during peace mission https://www.adomonline.com/asiyaw-sand-dispute-five-killed-in-shooting-during-peace-mission/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 14:59:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530456 A deadly shooting at a sand winning site in Asiyaw, located in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern Region, has claimed the lives of at least five people during a mediation effort to address illegal sand mining activities.

The incident occurred during a meeting aimed at resolving growing tensions over sand winning, which local farmers say is destroying their farmlands and threatening food production.

Crops such as cassava, maize, and pawpaw have reportedly been severely impacted.

In response to community complaints, the boundary chief of the Adonteng Division of the Akuapem Traditional Area, accompanied by his subjects, visited the site to mediate the situation.

However, the visit turned tragic when a group of armed men—allegedly acting under the instructions of individuals identified as Togbe and Alanyo—opened fire on the chief’s delegation.

The gunfire triggered chaos at the scene, leading to the deaths of at least five people.

Police in Nsawam have so far declined to comment on the incident, indicating that investigations are ongoing.

The community remains tense as residents demand justice and increased security.

Anger as aid worker dies after DR Congo shooting https://www.adomonline.com/anger-as-aid-worker-dies-after-dr-congo-shooting/ Sat, 22 Feb 2025 15:46:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2507518 An aid worker has died from gunshot wounds in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where Rwanda-backed rebels who captured two key cities in recent weeks are trying to seize more territory.

Jerry Muhindo Kavali, 49, was injured two days ago by a bullet that struck the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) office in Masisi where he was working.

He was taken to hospital in Goma for life-saving treatment but died of his wounds on Saturday.

Colleagues say he was deeply dedicated to humanitarian work and “always had a smile on his face”.

Kavali’s death has angered aid workers trying to help the tens of thousands of Congolese people whose lives have been destroyed by the war.

“Even war has its rules”, said MSF in response to the news.

The town of Masisi, where the MSF worker was shot, has witnessed fierce fighting between militias allied with the Congolese army and rebels belonging to the M23 and Alliance Fleuve Congo rebel groups.

The bullet that killed Kavali was “one of many bullets to hit our premises over recent weeks”, the MSF head of programmes Stephan Goetghebuer said.

Key areas already under M23 control include provincial capitals Goma and Bukavu, and the rebels appear to be continuing their advance.

Eastern DR Congo is rich in minerals and this battle for control of the region partly has its roots in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

It has been riven by conflict for more than 30 years and attempts in recent years to integrate rebels into the Congolese army have failed.

Experts now fear what effects the conflict will have on the wider East Africa region.

On Friday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution condemning the M23 offensive in eastern DR Congo, urging Rwanda to stop supporting the rebels, and saying they should immediately leave Congolese territory “without preconditions”.

This week, the US announced sanctions on M23 Spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka and Rwandan minister James Kabarebe for his alleged role in the conflict.

The incident occurred on Sunday, December 15, 2024, when a group of mourners was stopped at a routine police checkpoint.

Tensions escalated when one of the mourners allegedly insulted a female officer, leading to a call for backup. Constable Kennedy Ofori Boateng was among the responding officers.

The situation further deteriorated when the mourners attacked and tried to disarm one of the officers.

In the ensuing struggle, Constable Kennedy was accidentally shot in the abdomen.

He was rushed to a nearby health center but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

The family expressed their distress, stating that despite the incident happening in the morning, they were only notified late in the evening by a police officer who mistakenly claimed that Kennedy’s death was election-related violence.

However, videos circulation online of the circumstances leading to his death suggest otherwise.

To date, the family has not received any formal communication or support from the Ghana Police Service, and they have yet to see Kennedy’s body since Sunday.

The family is demanding an official statement from the Police and accountability for the tragic incident.

Fan shot dead celebrating Arsenal beating Manchester United https://www.adomonline.com/fan-shot-dead-celebrating-arsenal-beating-manchester-united/ Fri, 06 Dec 2024 06:31:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2480005 A fan of English football club Arsenal, who was celebrating the team’s victory over Manchester United, has allegedly been shot dead by a security guard in Uganda.

Another fan was injured as the guard opened fire on a large crowd of jubilant supporters at a restaurant in Lukaya town in central Uganda, about 100km (62 miles) from the capital Kampala.

It happened towards the end of the match, which Arsenal won 2-0.

A local journalist told the BBC that the building’s manager was angered by the noise that the jubilant supporters were making and asked the guard to intervene.

However, the fans did not heed a warning to quiet down.

Witnesses told the journalist, Farish Magembe, that the owner switched off the power in the restaurant, angering the fans, who responded by making even more noise.

It was then that the guard allegedly opened fire, firing several shots.

The victim, identified as 30-year-old John Ssenyonga, died at the scene. Another long-term Arsenal fan, Lawrence Mugejera, was taken to hospital for treatment.

Both the guard and the manager of the building are on the run after the incident, with the police looking for them.

The regional police spokesman, Twaha Kasirye, was quoted by the Daily Monitor newspaper as saying that they had recovered a gun at the scene.

“We condemn the incident and we ask anyone with information that can help the police to bring the suspect to book to speak up,” he said.

He also urged fans to control their excitement.

Tensions and tragic violence arising from the outcome of football matches, especially between English clubs, are not uncommon in the country where the English Premier League is followed closely.

In October, an Arsenal fan stabbed a Manchester United fan after the two argued over the results over the results of a clash between Arsenal and Liverpool.

In January last year, a youth councillor died from stab wounds in Kampala after intervening in a fight after Arsenal lost to Manchester City.

Just a week before that, an Arsenal fan had been bludgeoned to death in Adjumani, in the West Nile district.

Adult film star Jay Hefner shot dead https://www.adomonline.com/adult-film-star-jay-hefner-shot-dead/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 17:36:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2446151 Porn star Jay Hefner was shot dead while protecting his cousin in what has been described by his devastated family as a ‘senseless act of gun violence.’

Hefner, whose real name is Saiveon Hopkins, had traveled to Nebraska from his home in Ontario Canada to celebrate a loved one’s birthday.

While defending his cousin from violence, the 24-year-old was reportedly gunned down on the street in downtown Lincoln about 1.30am.

Despite first responders’ best efforts, Hopkins died in hospital from his injuries about 5.40am Sunday morning.

Hopkins’ girlfriend Madi Murchison shared a moving tribute on Sunday revealing she ‘instantly broke down’ when his mother called to share the tragic news.

‘I’ve never felt this type of hurt and idk (I don’t know) how to get through it,’ she said.

Murchison said Hopkins was her ‘safe place’ who ‘showed me love I’ve never experienced.’

‘This one hurts, my heart is completely broken… you made sure to vocalize your love every single day.’

GoFundMe has been established for Hopkins’ grieving family – including his 10-month-old daughter and terminally ill mom.

The fundraiser’s organiser Kyra Miller is a friend of Hopkins’ mom, Jeni.

She said: ‘It’s never easy to lose a loved one but losing a child is the most painful loss one can ever experience.

‘My close friend Jeni Brown, lost her son due to a senseless act of gun violence while trying to protect his cousin from physical violence.

‘Saiveon was a shining light that was there for everyone who loved him.’

Miller said in addition to caring for his daughter, who ‘adored him’, Hopkins also helped Jeni, who is terminally ill, care for his siblings.

‘Due to the financial strain already placed on the family for Jeni’s medical care and the unexpected passing, I am wanting to help raise funds to relieve them of the financial burden during an already devastating time.

‘Funerals can be costly and we would like to honor Saiveon in a way that he deserves.’

In addition to his work in the adult film industry, Hopkins recently completed a course to become a ‘veneer tech’, and worked as a model for Fashion Nova.

Shiraz-Deen sustained head injuries, while Mahama was injured in the arms.

Both were swiftly transported to Bole Hospital in the Savannah Region for medical attention.

Although no official statement has been issued regarding the raid, locals believe it was an attempt to remove individuals engaged in illegal mining in the district.

However, JoyNews sources in Bole indicate that, the raid might be linked to a series of recent incidents in the area, in which 20 people were mysteriously killed without any subsequent arrests.

Authorities suspect a connection between the illegal miners and these killings, which may have led to the crackdown aimed at driving them out of Bole.

3 shot on rapper Lil Baby’s music video set https://www.adomonline.com/3-shot-on-rapper-lil-babys-music-video-set/ Fri, 17 May 2024 03:43:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2396096 Three people have been shot on music set of popular American rapper, Lil Baby, in Atlanta.

The shooting began from what sounds like a semi-automatic weapon firing relentlessly for about 6 seconds while dozens of staffers and people were setting up filming equipment on Tuesday afternoon.

The camera man ducked for cover and the video got shaky as he pointed the lens toward the ground, but the background conversation fills in a bit of the story’s blanks.

A group of men apparently were pretending to film a music video or content of their own nearby and fired shots from a white car before they sped off.

Someone off camera can be heard commending them for the deceit, claiming the gunmen “played it smooth.”

More gunshots can be heard blasting not too long after the initial shooting but someone advises the man to put his firearm away, the assailants were long gone, and he was wasting bullets shooting at no one.

When the police responded to reports of shots fired in the shopping district of Verbena Street in Atlanta, they found a 24-year-old male with an apparent gunshot wound to the arm and a 27-year-old male with an apparent gunshot wound to the back.

The police also located a 23-year-old male, who transported himself to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck.

All of them reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries and Lil Baby was also reported to be unharmed.

Investigators are now investigating any possible reason behind the sh00ting.

Slovakia Prime Minister shot multiple times in attempted assassination https://www.adomonline.com/slovakia-prime-minister-shot-multiple-times-in-attempted-assassination/ Wed, 15 May 2024 21:22:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2395584

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot in a small town north-east of Bratislava.

On Wednesday evening Defence Minister Robert Kalinak said Mr Fico had been in surgery for over three hours and that the situation was “bad”.

Slovak politicians including the president have called the shooting an “attack on democracy”.

The alleged assailant was detained at the scene but has not yet been formally identified by the authorities.

Earlier on Wednesday evening Defence Minister Robert Kalinak said Mr Fico had been in surgery for over three hours and that the situation was “bad”.

The attack happened at about 14:30 (12:30 GMT) in Handlova, about 180km (112 miles) from the capital Bratislava, as Mr Fico greeted people in front of a cultural community centre where a government meeting had been held.

Footage showed a man raising a gun and firing five times at the prime minister before being subdued by bodyguards while other members of Mr Fico’s security detail took the prime minister into his car.

He was airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital before being flown to another hospital in Banska Bystrica, east of Handlova.

Later on Wednesday Slovakia’s Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba told the BBC that he believed Mr Fico’s procedure in hospital had gone well.

“I guess in the end he will survive,” Mr Taraba said, adding: “He’s not in a life threatening situation at this moment.”

At a press conference on Wednesday, Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said Mr Fico had been shot in the stomach.

“Initial information clearly points to political motivation,” he added.

Unconfirmed local media reports said the suspect was a 71-year-old writer and political activist.

Reuters Robert Fico (file pic)

Slovakia’s outgoing president Zuzana Caputova said something “so serious had happened that we can’t even realise it yet”.

“The hateful rhetoric we witness in society leads to hateful acts,” she added.

Mr Kalinak and Mr Estok blamed the spread of hate speech on social media for the shooting and urged citizens not to “respond to hate with hate”.

Mr Estok accused the media of contributing to the climate that led to Mr Fico’s shooting, telling a press conference: “Many of you were those who were sowing this hatred.”

He added that protection would be provided to constitutional officials as well as other groups who could be subject to similar attacks, including journalists and public figures.

Reuters A man was immediately detained after the shooting

Mr Fico, 59, returned to power in Slovakia after elections last September, at the head of a populist-nationalist coalition.

His first few months as prime minister have proved highly contentious politically. In January he halted military aid to Ukraine and last month pushed through plans to abolish public broadcaster RTVS.

Thousands of Slovaks have protested against the proposed reform of the public broadcaster in recent weeks. However, a planned opposition-led demonstration was called off on Wednesday as news of the shooting emerged.

Parliament was sitting at the time of the attack and Slovak media reported that a party colleague of Mr Fico’s shouted at opposition MPs, accusing them of stoking the attack.

President-elect Peter Pellegrini, who is a political ally of Mr Fico’s, said he was horrified to hear of the attack and also blamed the shooting on recent political divisions.

Describing the attack as an “unprecedented threat to Slovak democracy” he said people did not have to agree on everything, but there were ways to express disagreement democratically and legally.

Wold leaders have also condemned the attack on Mr Fico. US President Joe Biden condemned the “horrific act of violence” and said the US embassy was in “close touch” with the Slovakian government and was “ready to assist”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said there could “be no justification for this monstrous crime”. European Council President Charles Michel said “nothing can ever justify violence or such attacks”.

The incident occurred on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, at approximately 6:00 pm.

The assailants, who arrived on a motorbike, opened fire on the officers without provocation, resulting in fatal injuries.

Shockingly, the gunmen did not attempt to rob the victims, fleeing the scene immediately after the attack.

In response to the heinous crime, an intelligence-led operation has been launched to apprehend the suspects and bring them to justice.

The Ghana Police Service is sparing no effort in tracking down the perpetrators and ensuring that they face the full force of the law for their cowardly actions.

The Ghana Police Service remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and assured to continue to work tirelessly to apprehend those responsible for this reprehensible act.

Military officer shot dead over alleged land dispute https://www.adomonline.com/military-officer-shot-dead-over-alleged-land-dispute/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 23:19:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2388487 A military officer, believed to be in his late 30s, lost his life in a violent altercation over land rights at Kasoa Millennium City.

Two other officers narrowly escaped death after a sub-chief allegedly opened fire on them in front of the district police station

The incident stemmed from a long-standing dispute over land ownership. It was reported that the brother of one of the military officers had purchased land on behalf of the officers.

However, attempts to develop the land were consistently thwarted by a group led by an alleged land guard.

In a bid to find a resolution, the deceased officer and his companions visited the disputed land, only to find another group already working on it.

Despite their attempts to restore calm and seek intervention from the police, tensions escalated.

According to the alleged landowner, the officers decided to lodge another complaint at the Millennium City District Police Command.

However, upon learning that their initial complaint had been forwarded to the Central East Regional Police Command, they set off to follow up on the matter.

As they departed for the regional police command, the sub chief reportedly attempted to stop them. When the officers refused to comply, he allegedly drew a pistol and opened fire on their vehicle.

Tragically, one officer was fatally wounded, while the others narrowly escaped harm.

Kofi Asmah, the owner of 21st Century Construction Company, who sold the land in question, has accused the police at Millennium City of failing to address the situation effectively due to alleged corruption within their ranks.

Armed robbers attack mining company, shoots over five Chinese at Akyem Akokoaso https://www.adomonline.com/armed-robbers-attack-mining-company-shoots-over-five-chinese-at-akyem-akokoaso/ Sun, 11 Feb 2024 12:03:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2354342 At least five Chinese nationals have been shot, with three left in critical condition in a brazen armed robbery attack on a mining site in Akyem Akokoaso, located within the Ofoase Ayirebi constituency of the Eastern Region.

The victims were targeted in a robbery at the office of Jia Xin Industrial mining company, which undertook underground mining within old shafts in the area.

Reports indicate that a group of approximately 15 armed robbers stormed the mining site during a social gathering at night, making off with Ghc10,000 cash and two gold bars.

One of the victims sustained a gunshot injury in his private part.

The assailants disabled the CCTV cameras by confiscating their decoders, demonstrating a calculated and organized approach to the robbery.

“15 people executed the mission, tough guys. They didn’t pass through the Akokoaso Kade road. They took along the decoders of the CCTV cameras. They didn’t target other civilians. The company is licensed to do deep mining prospecting in the Akokoaso old shaft but taking undue advantage to mine to that extent,” a source familiar with the incident told Starr News.

The victims have been hospitalized and receiving treatment.

There have been longstanding tensions between the mining company and the local community.

Over the years, residents have accused Jia Xin Industrial of engaging in illegal mining practices, particularly due to their lack of proper licensing for extensive underground mining activities, which have reportedly caused damage to the area.

Jia Xin Industrial Company inherited the prospecting license from Ofosua Mining and Construction Company in 2018, following approval by then-Minister John Peter Amewu.

However, recent confrontations between the company and local youth have escalated, with 16 individuals from Akokoaso being arrested three weeks prior for illegal mining activities on the company’s concession, allegedly at the behest of Chinese authorities.

The mining company has suffered many robbery attacks in recent times.

Motor riders shoots lady multiple times in Kumasi https://www.adomonline.com/motor-riders-shoots-lady-multiple-times-in-kumasi/ Thu, 21 Sep 2023 09:14:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2296528 A motor riding gang attacked a 25-year-old lady at Aprade Junction in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti region.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at about 7:00 PM.

The gang opened fire on the lady, shooting her multiple times in the legs.

The incident caused bystanders to run in all directions to take cover.

It is unclear whether the lady attempted to resist the gang who attacked her on the quiet junction to rob her of her belongings.

Eyewitness Account

A taxi driver who made a daring dash to whisk the bleeding lady to the Living Waters Hospital, Prince Agyapong, recounted how residents in the area were living under constant fear of attacks from these motor-riding robbers.

“The gang members do not look like persons who live in Aprade. They come riding these royal motorbikes looking all suspicious. I passed them when I was driving here, and my instinct told me they were going on an operation.

A few moments afterwards, I heard sporadic shooting. I turned around and got closer to find this lady under attack. I am a quite brave young guy so as people were running away I went straight to the lady, lifted her and stopped a friend’s taxi to rush her to the hospital,” he narrated.

“My brother, if you see what they have done to the legs of this young lady who is wailing uncontrollably in the emergency ward, you will be driven to tears. It’s a pathetic sight,” a saddened Agyapong added.

Residents Concerns

Residents of Aprade, Oduom, and its adjoining communities along the Kumasi Ejisu highway in the Ashanti region, especially women, have become targets for motor riding gangs pounding on unsuspecting persons at dawn and in the evenings.

A woman who spoke to Ultimate News recounted several incidents where these robbers lay ambush at dawn waiting to snatch the belongings of traders who would usually leave home around those early hours for the market.

“Just four days ago, they came back here, held a woman, and robbed her of her money and everything she had on her. They are strangers to this community,” she recounted.

Police Response

The heroic taxi driver, Prince Agyapong, expressed worry that all their complaints to the police to beef up patrols in the area had fallen on deaf ears.

“When this incident happened, police from Tech, Oduom, Ejisu, and all these areas have now woken up from their slumber to come and ask what happened. Why will they have to wait for people to die before they act? Imagine if I was told that my sister had been attacked and maimed by armed robbers like this,” Agyapong bemoaned.

As of 10:30 pm, the family of the victim, who indicated they lived far off in Bekwai, were yet to get to the hospital to offer assistance, leaving the taxi driver playing family to the young lady.

Police shoot two suspects dead for attempting to escape custody https://www.adomonline.com/police-shoot-two-suspects-dead-for-attempting-to-escape-custody/ Tue, 15 Aug 2023 14:04:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2283705 The Jacobu district police command has denied claims they deliberately shot and killed two suspected criminals.

The deceased, according to the police, attempted to escape from custody, forcing them to open fire.

But the family of one of the victims is not satisfied with the explanation of the police, saying they want an independent investigation into the matter.

Speaking to Adom News’ correspondent, Isaac K. Normanyo, the distraught family members are finding it difficult to understand how suspects in police custody will be shot dead.

The police said it acted on intelligence and arrested the two suspects on Wednesday evening, August 9.

Upon search, three unspent cartridges were found on one of the suspect, Amoateng.

The police added that further interrogation led to the retrieval of three guns and other boxes of unspent cartridges in the house of Amoateng.

According to the police, whilst returning to the station, the two suspects attempted to escape, compelling officers to open fire.

The two died on the spot.

Sources within the Jacobu township disclosed, one of the deceased, Agyemang has been convicted severally for robbery but can’t say same for the other, Amoateng.

Mother of Amoateng, Comfort Manu, however, insists her son is not a criminal.

They want the IGP to constitute an independent body to investigate that matter.

Student arrested for shooting eight schoolmates dead https://www.adomonline.com/student-arrested-for-shooting-eight-schoolmates-dead/ Thu, 04 May 2023 06:44:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2245414 A teenage boy opened fire in a school in the Serbian capital of Belgrade just after lessons began on Wednesday morning, killing eight children and a security guard and seriously injuring several others, officials said.

The boy – a 13-year-old student at the school – allegedly sketched out the attack in advance on crumpled pieces of paper that officials displayed at a somber press conference. He called police himself after the shootings, they said.

The rare and possibly unprecedented event, in a nation with strict firearms laws yet high levels of gun ownership, sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond.

First reports of the shooting emerged not long after students arrived to begin the day at Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School, a well-known institution in Vračar, an upscale area of the Serbian capital. Panicked parents rushed to the scene.

Seven girls and one boy were killed, alongside the security guard, Belgrade’s Police Chief Veselin Milić said at a press conference. A further six children and one teacher were hospitalized, Serbia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said.

The suspect opened fire in a history classroom, “because it was near the entrance of the school,” he added.

He killed the security guard first, then went to another classroom where she shot some of his schoolmates, Milić said. The teenager then telephoned the police and waited to be arrested in the schoolyard.

The alleged shooter was later filmed being taken from the school in handcuffs with a jacket over his head and wearing blue, skinny jeans. He was flanked by police officers and driven away in an unmarked police car.

Serbian Interior Minister Bratislav Gasic said that the suspect’s father was also arrested, adding that it was known that he had previously visited a shooting range with his son, whose age was first given as 14.

Parents gathered outside the school as police responded to the shooting.

According to Gasic, the boy brought two guns from home. “The parent had several pieces of weapon and kept them locked up. The safe had a code. Obviously the kid had the code as soon as he managed to get hold of those two guns. And three frames full of 15 bullets each.”

Milić, the police chief, said the boy had a 9mm pistol and a small caliber pistol in a bag, as well as four Molotov cocktails.

Officials said the shooting was premeditated, and displayed sheets of paper that allegedly showed the suspect’s plans for the attack.

Parents struggled to come to terms with the shooting. The father of one student said he ran to the school to look for his daughter after seeing police at the scene, according to CNN affiliate N1.

“My child is still in shock, full of adrenaline, we haven’t been able to calm her down,” a mother of one child told N1.

Another father recounted a chaotic morning. “I was heading to the bank, and I saw a bunch of police. That was around 8:50. I came running. I saw the school psychologist, I saw the school staff, the teachers who were in shock,” the father told N1.

“The police came quickly, from what I could see. I asked: ‘Where’s my kid?’ And allegedly, one man said that the history teacher was shot. I went back to my apartment to look at my child’s schedule, and she was actually in history class. I took my wife with me and we went back out on the street,” he said.

“I saw that the security guard was lying under a table, in a circle [of blood] I went through the door looking for an attendant. I didn’t know what to do. I asked ‘Where’s my kid?’ and no one was saying anything,” the father said.

Police officers escorted the alleged shooter from the school.

The man later learned that his daughter had escaped unharmed.

The interior ministry said in a statement on Facebook that it was told of the incident at 8.40 a.m. local time (2.40 a.m. ET). “All available police patrols were dispatched to the scene, where they immediately went onto the school grounds and apprehended a minor, a seventh-grader who is suspected to have fired several shots from his father’s gun at students and the school security guard,” the statement said.

A schoolgirl injured in the shooting has life-threatening wounds and was undergoing surgery, N1 reported.

The shooting happened at about 7:30 Saturday morning, when Jeremy Brown was heading out for work.

Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said Kadejah Brown and her husband, Jeremy Brown, had been arguing most of the night. He added that Jeremy Brown was trying to leave the apartment and defuse the situation before being shot.

There were kids present at the apartment during the time of the shooting, and they were reportedly crying, saying “please, daddy, please” during the livestream.

Deputies were on the scene in a matter of minutes and were able to recover a handgun, along with a shell casing.

“There was a history of domestic violence between Brown and the victim,” Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said in a Facebook post. “This was a tragic and senseless murder and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victim.”

Seven killed in attack on Jehovah’s Witnesses hall https://www.adomonline.com/seven-killed-in-attack-on-jehovahs-witnesses-hall/ Fri, 10 Mar 2023 14:16:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2226540 Seven people have been killed and several more injured in a shooting at a Jehovah’s Witness meeting hall in the German city of Hamburg, police say.

They say the gunman acted alone in Thursday’s attack, and is also thought to be dead. His motives are unknown.

Dramatic footage has now emerged that appears to show the suspect firing many rounds through a window of the hall.

The suspect is a former member of the religious community, aged between 30 and 40, Der Spiegel magazine reports.

The victims are yet to be identified, and work at the crime scene continues.

Police say they found a dead person at the scene who they believe may have been the perpetrator.

They were called at about 21:15 local time on Thursday, to reports that shots had been fired in the building.

Officers who went in found people who “may have been seriously injured by firearms, some of them fatally”, he said.

“The officers also heard a shot from the upper part of the building and went upstairs, where they also found a person. So far we have no indications that any perpetrators fled.”

It is thought people had gathered, possibly for a Bible study, when the shooting began at around 21:00 local time.

Gregor Miesbach, who filmed the gunman shooting through a first-floor window, told the Bild newspaper: “I heard loud gunshots, went to the window to get a picture of the situation. I saw a man with a firearm shooting through a window and filmed it.”

Lara Bauch, a 23-year-old student who lives nearby, told the DPA news agency that “there were about four bursts of gunfire – several shots were fired in each burst – with gaps lasting roughly 20 seconds to a minute”.

She said that from her window she could see a person frantically running from the ground floor to the first floor. “The man was wearing dark clothing and moving fast,” she added.

An alert was sent on the federal warning app, NINAwarn, at about 21:00 local time telling locals that “one or more unknown perpetrators shot at people in a church”.

Local residents were told not to leave their homes amid the ongoing police operation.

Footage showed police escorting people out of the meeting hall, some to ambulances.

Hamburg’s Interior Minister Andy Grote said on Twitter that police special forces and a large number of officers had been deployed to the scene.

The reasons behind the shooting were “still completely unclear”.

On Friday morning, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described it as a “brutal act of violence”, saying his thoughts were with the victims and their relatives.

In a statement, the Jehovah’s Witness community in Germany said it was “deeply saddened by the horrific attack on its members at the Kingdom Hall in Hamburg after a religious service”.

Forensic experts in white suits worked through the night inside the brightly lit interior of the meeting house.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are members of a Christian-based religious movement, founded in the US at the end of the 19th Century.

In its latest report from 2022, the movement says there are about 8.7 million Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide, including about 170,000 in Germany.

In the city of Hamburg, there are believed to be nearly 4,000 members of the organisation.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are probably best known for their door-to-door evangelical work; witnessing from house to house and offering Bible literature.

Aowin Traditional Council sends message to police over shooting incident, threats [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/aowin-traditional-council-sends-message-to-police-over-shooting-incident-and-threats/ Thu, 23 Feb 2023 11:17:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2220600 There’s fear and panic among the Aowin Traditional Council after the shooting incident that led to the death of four persons in November 2022.

The leaders have appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to intervene.

Four people were shot dead and many injured after unidentified men allegedly attempted to attack the Paramount Chief of the Aowin Traditional Area, Beyeeman Tano Kwao Benbuin II, in the early hours of Sunday, November 6, 2022.

The traditional council has revealed that since the shooting incident last year, the traditional leaders in the area feel insecure as they have been receiving several threats from unidentified persons believed to be in the same area.

At a press conference at Enchi, Nana Enoku Panyin III, the chief of New Yaakase, who led the press conference, said they live in fear, particularly the paramount chief, Beyeeman Tano Kwao Benbiun.

Nana Enoku Panyin expressed worry about the police’s failure to ensure effective protection of the palace and the traditional leaders since the shooting incident happened. He called on the government to intervene before things get out of control in the area.

However, Nana Enoku Panyin III disclosed that since the undercurrent of these disturbances and assassination attempts are all steeped in chieftaincy disputes, he humbly implored the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to order urgently the Judicial Committee of the National House of Chiefs sitting on the dispute regarding the Aowin Paramount Stool to come out with their ruling to forestall any other issues that may hamper the peace and tranquillity of the Aowin Traditional Area.

Also, some of the chiefs, who were present during the press conference who spoke to the media, urged the security operatives in the region to ensure the protection of lives and property in the Aowin traditional area.

Woman arrested after her daughter wrote classwork about how ‘mum shot dad’ https://www.adomonline.com/woman-arrested-after-her-daughter-wrote-classwork-about-how-mum-shot-dad/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 15:54:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2214659  A woman was arrested after her daughter wrote a story in her kindergarten class about her mother shooting at her father during a fight at home in Tennessee.

Kaydra Johnson, 28, was nabbed by deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, February 6, and charged with four counts of reckless endangerment for allegedly firing the gun at their house while their four kids were inside.

Police said they learned of the domestic violence after a school counselor at Donelson Elementary tipped off the state’s Department of Children’s Services about potential abuse after the young girl penned a story for class about a fight between her parents that ended with gunshots.

The story paints a vivid picture of the dispute.

“Mother and father got into a fight. Mum told him to get out because he was smoking too much. Father hit mother in the eye. Mother said look what you’ve done?” the girl wrote.

“Mother got the gun from under the bed. I was in the living room, and my sisters and brother were in the room. Mother pulled the gun on father and shot three times. The bullets hit the wall. Mother told him to sleep in his car in the driveway and not to come back or she will shoot him again.”

When police arrived at Johnson’s home they found her locked out of her house while her 1-year-old and 4-year-old children were inside, police told WREG.

Police forced the garage door open and firefighters checked on the two children, who appeared to be fine after spending an hour and a half alone inside.

Deputies noted several bullet holes in the living room, bedroom and hallway walls.

Johnson confessed to firing at her husband at least twice but told police it was only after he entered the home without her permission and then punched her and hit her with a vacuum cleaner.

Police said she had a cut and bruising around her right eye.

Johnson said three of her children were on the couch and the fourth was in the bathroom when she fired the gun. Her husband was not injured. Two guns were seized from the home.

Two of her children were placed in custody with their grandmother and two others are with their aunt.

6-year-old in custody after shooting teacher, police say https://www.adomonline.com/6-year-old-in-custody-after-shooting-teacher-police-say/ Sat, 07 Jan 2023 12:19:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2202693 A six-year-old boy is in police custody after he shot a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, Friday afternoon, Police Chief Steve Drew said in a news conference.

“The individual is a 6-year-old student. He is right now in police custody,” Drew said. “We have been in contact with our commonwealth attorney and some other entities to help us best get services to this young man.”

Drew said the female teacher – who is in her 30s – was shot inside a classroom and added that “this was not an accidental shooting.”

The police chief said there was an altercation between the teacher and the student, who had the firearm, and that a single round was fired.

Drew, who had earlier said the teacher was in critical condition, said Friday evening her injuries were considered life-threatening but that there was “some improvement in the last update that we got.”

There were no other students involved, the chief said.

The investigation is ongoing, he added.

“We’ll get the investigation done, there’s questions we’ll want to ask and find out about. I want to know where that firearm came from, what was the situation,” Drew added.

Richneck Elementary School will be closed Monday, according to Newport News Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. George Parker.

“I’m in shock, and I’m disheartened,” Parker said in Friday’s news conference. “We need to educate our children and we need to keep them safe.”

“We need the community’s support, continued support, to make sure that guns are not available to youth and I’m sounding like a broken record today, because I continue to reiterate that: that we need to keep the guns out of the hands of our young people,” the superintendent said.

Officials are also looking into any past instances that may have transpired before the shooting, Parker added.

According to Fox 13, he was followed not only on social media but on his way home. As he arrived outside of his apartment just moments after sharing the Instagram story, he was shot and killed.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reportedly responded to the shooting, which took place in Tampa, Florida.

Rollie Bands reportedly died at the hospital after being transported by a good Samaritans.

Police are still to find and charge the suspect. Reports online suggest that it was a lone gunman who committed the act, while police reports suggest that the individual was known to the rapper.

In the meantime, many have reacted to the rapper’s death as some call out the sheer ignorance of his actions. Not much is known about Rollie Bands yet, but he is an upcoming rapper from Florida and has several singles out, including songs like “Pusha P,” “Struggle,” and “Foreigner.” Unfortunately, he received more attention on him as a rapper in death than when he was alive.

His social media account has since been flooded with comments and posts from persons mocking his death.

Burna Boy’s police escorts shoot married man who fought singer after he made pass at his wife https://www.adomonline.com/burna-boys-police-escorts-shoot-married-man-who-fought-singer-after-he-made-pass-at-his-wife/ Sun, 12 Jun 2022 20:17:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2125310 The Lagos State Police Commissioner’s Special Squad has detained five policemen attached to singer, Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy, for attempted murder after they shot two fun seekers.

According to a preliminary report, trouble started when Burna Boy and five police escorts visited the nightclub around 4am on June 8.

About four policemen waited outside while one of the policemen, identified as Inspector Ibrahim, who was in mufti, accompanied the Grammy-Award-winning artiste into the club.

According to multiple witness statements, Burna was in the VIP section with three women when he spotted another woman.

He was reported to have told one of his police escorts to invite the woman to join him.

However, the lady’s husband was said to have lambasted the singer, insisting that it was disrespectful for any man to make advances at his wife.

After some minutes, Burna Boy reportedly made fresh advances at the woman.

This infuriated her husband further and his friends who had gathered at the club.

“As things were getting heated, Ibrahim brought out his service pistol and shot multiple times while Burna Boy was laughing,” said a senior policeman.

In the process, 27-year-old Lawrence was shot in the thigh while his friend, Tolu, was hit in the head by a bullet. This caused a commotion in the club.

It was learnt that Burna Boy and his crew then drove off to one of his properties at the Elegushi end of the Lekki-Epe Expressway before leaving for Lekki Phase 1.

“Aware of what he had done, Burna Boy took the next flight out without even informing the policemen. He only made a video call to them to inform them that he had travelled to Spain. All his police escorts have been arrested and are currently at the Command headquarters,” said a top source at the office of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.

Sources close to the victims said the police were already making attempts to protect Burna Boy because of his status while the victims were treating their wounds at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, a brother to the victim, who identified himself only as Jide, said his brother had undergone surgery to remove the bullet lodged in his thigh.

Jide added that Irebami, who is based in the United States of America, arrived in Nigeria a week ago for a wedding.

He also berated the management of Club Cubana for not doing enough to forestall the situation, adding that the club management had not even reached out to the family since the incident occurred.

Attempts to get a response from Burna Boy’s manager, Mrs Bose Ogulu, who is also his mother, proved abortive as she neither responded to calls nor a text message on Saturday.

Similarly, Chioma Nwachukwu, a media consultant for Cubana, did not respond to calls on Saturday.

But the Spokesman for the Lagos State Police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the focus of the investigation was the policemen.

Hundeyin claimed that the police had not received any complaint from any victim.

Four killed in Oklahoma hospital shootings https://www.adomonline.com/four-killed-in-oklahoma-hospital-shootings/ Thu, 02 Jun 2022 11:20:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2121320 Four people have been killed in a shooting spree at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, police say.

Officers confirmed that the suspected shooter, who was armed with a rifle and a handgun, was also dead.

Police arrived at the scene on Wednesday afternoon at St Francis Hospital in three minutes – which they say ensured the death toll wasn’t higher.

Multiple injuries had also been confirmed, officials added.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Deputy Police Chief Eric Dalgleish said: “Right now we have four civilians that are dead, and one shooter that is dead.”

He said the shooter, who has not yet been identified, sustained fatal gunshot wounds which were believed to have been self-inflicted.

The suspect “had one long gun and one hand gun on the scene at the time”, he said.

No information was available about a possible motivation for the attack.

Deputy Dalgleish said that police received a call about an active shooter at 16:52 local (20:52 GMT) and arrived at the scene within three minutes.

“The officers who did arrive did hear shots in the building and that’s what directed them to the second floor,” he said.

Officers are currently interviewing witnesses throughout the building, including those who were on the second floor – where the attack took place.

Speaking to ABC News, Captain Richard Meulenberg said that by the time police arrived at the medical campus they “found a few people have been shot” and some of them had already died.

It was a “catastrophic scene”, he said.

US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the Tulsa shooting, White House officials also said in a statement.

Last Saturday, President Biden urged Americans to make their voices heard to prevent further gun violence, following the killing of 19 children and two teachers at a school in Texas.

Elon Musk praises unnamed woman who shot dead man who opened fire on party https://www.adomonline.com/elon-musk-praises-unnamed-woman-who-shot-dead-man-who-opened-fire-on-party/ Tue, 31 May 2022 11:03:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2120344 Tesla CEO Elon Musk praised the unnamed West Virginia woman who used a pistol to shoot and kill a man who opened fire on a party.

On Saturday night, Musk tweeted: “Wow, good for her and saving those people!”

He was responding to a tweet that described the story as “a good gal stops a bad guy with a gun” tweeted by an account arguing against restrictions on gun ownership.

The tweet from user @RimmerTurk tagged Musk, saying: “There are legitimate reasons to carry. Help us counter the lies by anti gunners!”

According to the Charleston Police Department, the woman shot the man dead after he opened fire on a party of 30 to 40 people. Police said the attack followed him being asked not to speed earlier that day.

The man, later identified as Dennis Butler, started firing into the crowd on Wednesday night with an AR-15-style firearm, said police spokesman Tony Hazelett.

This prompted the female bystander to use a pistol to shoot and kill Butler, the police said. The woman hasn’t been named.

“She’s just a member of the community who was carrying her firearm lawfully and instead of running from the threat, she engaged with the threat and saved several lives last night,” Hazelett said.

Butler died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Hazelett said there were no other injuries. He said there will be no charges filed against the woman.

Musk’s tweet came at a time when the debate over stricter gun control measure laws has intensified after the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas

On Wednesday, a day after the shooting, Musk laid out his stance on gun control in an email to CNBC. Musk said he supports mass gun ownership but wanted “tight” background checks before people can purchase them.

Musk said he supports gun ownership as a “safeguard” against tyrannical government.

In June 2021 President Joe Biden mocked people who make arguments like Musk’s, saying “if you think you need to have weapons to take on the government, you need F-15s and maybe some nuclear weapons.”

Musk did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment on Sunday morning.

Easter Friday Church Shooting: 10-year-old undergoes surgery https://www.adomonline.com/easter-friday-church-shooting-10-year-old-undergoes-surgery/ Wed, 20 Apr 2022 09:13:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2106578 On Good Friday, an Easter Convention at the Heaven Embassy Chapel was disrupted by four armed men who blocked three entries to the church auditorium.

Over seventy people, mostly indigenes of Atwima Afrancho, were held hostage for about thirty minutes as the robbers demanded their personal belongings.

“All we heard was an order for the lights to be put off. On the third command, they shot into the congregation. The shots fired injured some children here but we didn’t know. One of the robbers started walking through the church auditorium, taking money and phones of congregants”, Prophet Bernard Appiah Fobi, one of the preachers invited for the event explained.

The church is situated on the outskirts of the community, a part of new buildings under construction.

The Easter Convention had brought many to the church for the first time.

Maame Ama, a ten-year-old, has undergone a surgical operation to correct the injury on the leg sustained through the shootings.

Rev. Newton explains she was shot in both legs.

“Her leg got broken, a bullet went through the leg. It was very dangerous. It took us a lot of courage to carry her to the hospital. We all thought the leg would be severed”, he said.

About two hundred metres from the church lives twelve-year-old Juliana Amankwaah.  She sits on a bench, surrounded by her family.

Just below the knee, a bandage covers the injury sustained from the shooting.

“When I touched it I could feel my flesh, it was a deep wound. The skin was off, as if it has been bitten by an animal”, little Juliana narrates.

Her mother, a farmer, is forced to abandon her daily routine on the farm to cater for her distraught daughter.

Abena Konadu, who was also at the church, is traumatized by the incident.

“I would have gone to the farm to find some food for my kids, due to the injury she sustained I can’t leave her. In the evening, I feel they are going to come back. I am afraid”, she said.

From the toe to the thigh, 13-year-old Angelina Obeng is wrapped in bandage rendering her immobile.

Pellets of bullets were picked from the wound sustained from the shooting.

After being shot, Angelina had to run a distance through the bushes for fear that the robbers were lurking around.

“Immediately the robbers left, someone raised an alarm that they were coming back so we all run into the bush. I further sustained some injuries”, she said.

Her grandmother, Margaret Opoku is traumatized and worried about how to cater for the injured granddaughter.

“Her mother died eight months ago so she is stuck with me. Her father hasn’t been here for a long time”, she said.

Mother of seven, Christiana Agyei sits in front of her room with her in-law, Rashida Issaka. Both are victims of the incident. Rashida is three months pregnant.

She says aside from the injury sustained through the shooting, she feels a sharp pain throughout her body after a man fell on her in the rush to carry through orders of the armed robbers.

“After we were shot, they ordered us to lie down. Unfortunately for me, I fell and some people fell on me. That is what has affected me. The wound I sustained from the gun shots isn’t that bad”, she said.

Christiana has to put her kenkey business on hold to heal her injury on one leg.

“Whenever I am alone, I feel their presence. I am afraid”, she said.

An amount of over five thousand cedis have gone into medical bills, all paid by the church.

But the church may not be able to raise more money to cater for the affected persons.

Meanwhile, Atwima Kwanwoma District Police Command is investigating the incident.

Patrick Lyoya: Video shows fatal US police shooting of black man https://www.adomonline.com/patrick-lyoya-video-shows-fatal-us-police-shooting-of-black-man/ Thu, 14 Apr 2022 18:36:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2104900 Police video has been released of a white officer fatally shooting a black man in the back of the head after a scuffle over a stun gun.

Footage of the 4 April incident in Grand Rapids, Michigan, shows Patrick Lyoya, 26, running from the officer following a traffic stop.

The officer, who has not been named, is then heard telling Mr Lyoya to “let go” of his Taser, before the man is shot as he lies face-down on the ground.

The shooting has led to protests.

Dozens of demonstrators gathered on Wednesday outside the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) demanding the name of the police officer involved be made public.

State police are currently investigating the incident.

Mr Lyoya is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and had lived in Grand Rapids for about five years, according to the office of civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing the Lyoya family.

On Wednesday, the GRPD released footage of the incident from a police body camera, a police unit’s dashcam, a mobile phone and a home surveillance system.

One of the videos shows the officer pulling over Mr Lyoya’s vehicle shortly after 08:00 local time (12:00 GMT) on 4 April.

The officer decided to stop the car for improper registration, authorities were quoted as saying by CNN.

Mr Lyoya gets out of the car, but the officer asks him to get back in.

Appearing confused, Mr Lyoya stays out of the vehicle and asks what he has done. The officer asks if he speaks English, and Mr Lyoya replies “yes”.

Mr Lyoya is then asked repeatedly if he has a licence, and after a brief conversation he runs from the officer.

The two are then seen wrestling on the ground and the policeman gets out his Taser, which the two fight over. The officer tells Mr Lyoya to let go of the stun gun.

During this altercation the officer accidentally turns off his body camera, according to police.

However, footage filmed from the mobile phone of Mr Lyoya’s passenger has also been released, which appears to show the officer shooting Mr Lyoya in the back of the head.

Speaking at a Wednesday briefing, GRPD chief Eric Winstrom said: “From my view of the video, Taser was deployed twice. Taser did not make contact.”

“And Mr Lyoya was shot in the head. However, that’s the only information that I have,” he said, describing the incident as a “tragedy”.

The police officer is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. He would not be identified publicly unless criminal charges were to be brought, Mr Winstrom said.

Mr Crump, representing the Lyoya family, has demanded that the officer be fired and charged.

He tweeted that the videos showed the police officer shooting unarmed Mr Lyoya “while he was on the ground and facing away from the officer!”

“Patrick never used violence against this officer even though the officer used violence against him in several instances,” Mr Crump added.

Cristina Vita Aranda, who has three children with Club Olimpia player Ivan Torres, was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to hospital with a bullet wound to her head.

Local reports said left-back Torres, a former U20 international, was also at the concert and helped get his wife to hospital.

The model and influencer announced recently they were planning to divorce after 10 years of marriage.

The pretty brunette is believed to have been caught up in the crossfire of a gunfight in a VIP area at the Jose Asuncion Flores Ampitheatre in the Paraguayan capital Asuncion, although Sunday’s shooting is still being investigated by police and prosecutors.

A man named as Marcos Ignacio Rojas Mora also died, with unconfirmed reports saying the intended target was a drug dealer identified locally as Ederson Salinas Benitez.

Four people aged between 23 and 40 were also shot and were being treated for their injuries in hospital today.

Ivan, who began his career with Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno before signing for the club’s arch-rivals Club Olimpia in December 2014, is said to have suffered a panic attack but was uninjured.

Local TV footage showed one of the victims being carried out of the ampitheatre on a stretcher by security guards and paramedics while a man who also appeared to be hurt was guided towards an exit by two men helping him to walk.

Confirming 29-year-old Cristina’s death, Itaugua Nacional Hospital director Yolanda Gonzalez said: “She was intubated when she arrived and attempts were made to resuscitate her for at least 25 minutes after she went into cardiac arrest.

“She died after the lengthy attempts to save her life.”

Vita Aranda described herself on Instagram to her 445,000 followers as a personal trainer although she also did modelling work and was often referred to as an influencer in her homeland.

She posted footage of herself four days before her death working out in the gym.

She wrote alongside the selfie video of her lifting weights: “People think I go to the gym only so I can show off a good body.

“What they don’t know is that it controls stress and anxiety, it helps improves my morale and it gives me physical and mental strength and confidence.”

Cristina and her husband posed together for a Christmas picture before the brunette’s recent announcement they had decided to call time on their relationship.

Ivan, who has yet to publicly comment on the tragedy, wrote: “Family united and the table laid, the most special thing of every Christmas.”

Following news of their split, the footballer said in a photo he posted with their children: “I have always been a very sincere person and today I feel very sad and in a lot of pain.

“But despite that I’m here today to give my best and fight always.

“I thank my family, my teammates and ex-teammates who are supporting me at this difficult moment.”

They were still man and wife when the shooting happened and were believed to be trying to patch things up between them.

A group called Binomio de Oro were on stage when the shooting occurred. The concert was suspended immediately.

Ivan Torres enjoyed a spell in Argentina with first-division side Club Atletico Colon between his time with Club Olimpia.

He returned to the Paraguay side in 2017 following the end of his loan period.

Olimpia cancelled its morning training session today following the death of Torres’ wife.

The decision was taken after it emerged another player’s wife was among the injured.

Argentinian Victor Salazar’s partner Xoana Danila Barrientos, 29, was rushed to hospital after being shot in the leg at the same concert.

Her condition has been described as stable.

Police chief Benicio Ramirez confirmed initial reports pointed to Ivan’s wife Cristina Vita Aranda being a “collateral victim.”

He told a local radio station: “The initial police theory is that she was a collateral victim.

“She was shot in the head and didn’t survive.”

Tension mounts at Kwahu as Chinese man allegedly shoots 8-yr-old boy https://www.adomonline.com/tension-mounts-at-kwahu-as-chinese-man-allegedly-shoots-8-yr-old-boy/ Thu, 13 Jan 2022 11:54:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2066768 Tension IS mounting among residents of Kwahu Apradang in the Eastern region after a Chinese man allegedly shot an eight-year-old boy.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday while the victim, identified as Kwasi Mireku, was playing with his friends.

The suspect has only been identified as ‘Soldier’.

Narrating the incident to Adom News, the mother of the victim, Sarah Pedikan, said she was working in her backyard when she heard the gunshot and asked the children to leave the place.

Not long afterward, some friends of Kwasi rushed to announce the latter had been shot.

“I asked my son what happened and he told me he was going to pick water from the room but when I confronted the Chinese, he said my son was rather going to his room,” she narrated.

However, irate residents believe he did it on purpose, adding this is not the first time Chinese nationals in the area have attacked locals.

The timely intervention of the Nkwakaw Divisional Police Command saved the suspect from being lynched as the residents besieged his house amid threats to set it on fire.

They have however threatened reprisal attacks should such an incident re-occur.

The Divisional Commander ACP Kofi Adu has urged calm among the residents as they begin investigations into the matter.

Kwasi who is also in a critical condition is currently undergoing treatment at the Nkawkaw Government Hospital.

Afghanistan: 3 wedding guests reportedly shot dead for playing music at reception https://www.adomonline.com/afghanistan-3-wedding-guests-reportedly-shot-dead-for-playing-music-at-reception/ Mon, 01 Nov 2021 12:18:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2036815

Three guests were shot dead at a wedding reception in eastern Afghanistan on Friday night, apparently, because music was being played, according to the Taliban.

The attack was carried out by three assailants who claimed to be members of the Taliban before opening fire, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told reporters at a press conference Sunday.

Mujahid said the gunmen attacked a reception taking place in the Surkh Rod district of Nangarhar Province.

A local journalist also told CNN at least two people had been killed and 10 others injured.

The Taliban spokesman added that it was not permissible to kill anyone for playing music, and an investigation was underway to establish whether the incident was due to a personal feud.

“In the ranks of the Islamic Emirate, no one has the right to turn anyone away from music or anything, only to try to persuade them.

That is the main way,” Mujahid told the press conference, according to AFP.

Mujahid later reiterated in a series of Twitter posts that the suspects had claimed to be Taliban members, and had asked for the music to be stopped before firing before opening fire — but did not verify whether or not they were.

He said two people connected to the incident had been arrested, but a third had escaped.

Although they disapprove of playing music at weddings and other public events, the Taliban has not issued a decree banning it since coming to power in August.

However, in late August folk singer Fawad Andarabi was dragged from his home and killed by the Taliban, while musicians in the country told CNN’s Clarissa Ward they had been told not to play their instruments.

During their previous period of rule in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, the Taliban banned most forms of music as un-Islamic.
