A blockbuster weekend of European football awaits as title races, continental qualification battles, and pride are all on the line across France, Italy, and Spain.

In Ligue 1, all eyes will be on leaders Paris Saint-Germain as they host Toulouse on Friday night. PSG sit just one point clear at the summit, albeit with a game in hand over closest challengers Lens, meaning the pressure is very real despite their star-studded squad. This clash represents a chance to create breathing room, but Toulouse are capable of causing problems if complacency creeps in. The Parisians know that anything less than a win could swing momentum in the title race.

Sunday night brings another major French showdown as Monaco take on Marseille. Both sides are firmly in the mix for European places, and this fixture could prove decisive in shaping the top four. Monaco’s attacking flair will be tested against a Marseille side known for intensity and resilience, making this one of the most finely balanced encounters of the weekend.

Over in Serie A, the spotlight falls on a trio of heavyweight clashes. League leaders Inter Milan welcome Roma in what looks like a stern test of their title credentials. Inter have been dominant at the top, but Roma’s tactical discipline and counterattacking threat could make life uncomfortable. A win here would further cement Inter’s control, while Roma are desperate for points in the race for European qualification.

Equally compelling is the showdown between Napoli and AC Milan. With Champions League places and the runner-up spot at stake, this is effectively a six-pointer. Napoli’s attacking dynamism meets Milan’s experience and structure in a contest that could swing either way. Both teams understand the significance of the moment, and the intensity should reflect that.

Elsewhere in Italy, fixtures like Lazio versus Parma and Juventus against Genoa add further intrigue as teams chase consistency in a crowded table.

In La Liga, the title race takes center stage. Real Madrid travel to face Mallorca knowing they must keep pace with leaders Barcelona, who hold a four-point advantage. Madrid cannot afford any slip-ups, particularly against a Mallorca side capable of frustrating bigger opponents on their day.

The weekend’s marquee clash comes when Atletico Madrid host Barcelona. This is a defining moment in the title race: Barcelona could tighten their grip at the top, while Atletico have the chance to play spoiler and boost their own ambitions. Expect a tactical battle, with fine margins likely to decide the outcome.

Finally, Monday night sees Girona face Villarreal in a crucial encounter for European positioning. Villarreal sit narrowly ahead in the race for third, and victory here would strengthen their claim, while Girona aim to disrupt that push and climb the standings themselves.

With so much at stake across all three leagues, this weekend promises drama, intensity, and potentially season-defining results.

Milan edge fiery derby over Inter to keep faint title hopes alive https://www.adomonline.com/milan-edge-fiery-derby-over-inter-to-keep-faint-title-hopes-alive/ Mon, 09 Mar 2026 04:50:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2638323 AC Milan played a near-perfect game at San Siro as they beat rivals and league leaders Inter 1-0.

With their second Derby della Madonnina win of the season, Milan cut Inter’s lead at the top of Serie A to seven points. A win for Inter would have put them 13 points ahead, a perhaps unassailable lead, but they looked completely out of control for the entire game.

Luka Modric had a trademark performance at the heart of almost everything Milan produced. He was on hand to scare Inter in the opening few minutes as Yann Sommer’s wayward pass rolled out to Christian Pulisic, but Modric’s shot was just wide.

It was a sign of things to come for Inter, who created nothing.

It felt as if Christian Chivu and Massimiliano Allegri were in complete reverse from the beginning, with the former getting his gameplan completely wrong and the latter getting it spot on.

In the 34th minute, Youssouf Fofana played a wonderful pass into the path of Pervis Estupinan, who smashed the ball into the top of the net and Sommer was helpless to stop him.

From there, Milan were in complete control aside from moments of frenzied attacks that Inter attempted intermittently.

Milan blocked every inroad that Inter tried to make, covering the passing lanes and killing their threats from the wings with organised defending.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Federico Dimarco both had golden chances to score, the latter of which made a criminal miss from inside the box and hit the ball far over the bar.

Milan defended immensely and as Inter tried to force the ball in late with shot after shot, they withstood under pressure and secured a stunning win.

Como pile misery on Juventus and boost Euro hopes https://www.adomonline.com/como-pile-misery-on-juventus-and-boost-euro-hopes/ Sat, 21 Feb 2026 11:11:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2633499 Como boosted their chances of qualifying for Europe for the first time with a 2-0 win at Juventus.

Juve were thrashed 5-2 at Galatasaray in the Champions League play-offs on Tuesday but had the chance to climb into the qualification places for next season’s competition as they returned to Serie A action.

A win would have lifted them above fourth-placed Napoli but they suffered a third straight defeat, allowing Como to move just a point behind them in sixth place.

Cesc Fabregas’ side, who drew 1-1 at second-placed AC Milan on Wednesday, were in front after just 11 minutes when Anastasios Douvikas played in Mergim Vojvoda on the right.

The Kosovo international cut inside before unleashing a left-footed strike that was too strong for home goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio.

The visitors doubled their lead just after the hour mark as Maximo Perrone counter-attacked from a poorly taken Juve corner, before finding captain Lucas da Cunha on the right.

The French midfielder then drilled in a low cross for compatriot Maxence Caqueret to convert on the edge of the six-yard box.

That secured Como’s first win in four league games, while Juve will go into Wednesday’s return leg with Galatasaray on the back of a five-game winless streak in all competitions.

Serie A referee chief hits out at ‘cheats’ after ‘clearly wrong’ Juventus red card against Inter https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-referee-chief-hits-out-at-cheats-after-clearly-wrong-juventus-red-card-against-inter/ Mon, 16 Feb 2026 06:30:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2631416 Serie A’s referee designator has apologised for the “clearly wrong” sending off of Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu against Inter, but criticised those in the league who “try everything they can to cheat” the officials.

Kalulu was shown a second yellow card in the 42nd minute of Saturday night’s league match, which Inter won 3-2, when the score was 1-1.

The 25-year-old France international defender was adjudged by referee Federico La Penna to have pulled the shirt of Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni, who fell to the ground before immediately gesturing for a card to be shown.

Television replays appeared to show no contact had been made by Kalulu, but the video assistant referee (VAR) system is unable to intervene for yellow card decisions.

“We are very disappointed, both with La Penna’s decision, which was clearly wrong, and with the fact that VAR could not be used to rectify it,” Gianluca Rocchi, the league’s referee designator, told Italian press agency Ansa after the match.

“La Penna is mortified and we sympathise with him, but I have to tell you the truth: he is not the only one who got it wrong, because yesterday there was a clear simulation. The latest in a long series in a league where they try everything they can to cheat us.”

Rocchi said the league’s officials are “capable of taking responsibility” for their errors, but he also criticised the league’s coaches: “They have never helped us, but have made things for difficult for us.”

The league’s referee designator, however, delivered the thrust of his message to players: “I believe that someone should examine their conscience. To be clear, I am referring to those who go out on the pitch and behave in a certain way.”

Inter’s 3-2 victory, secured with a last-minute winner from Piotr Zielinski, saw them go eight points clear of second-place Milan, who have played one game fewer, at the top of Serie A.

Juve are fifth in the standings, 15 points behind Inter.

Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A preview https://www.adomonline.com/premier-league-ligue-1-la-liga-and-serie-a-preview/ Fri, 16 Jan 2026 03:59:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2619904 SuperSport on DStv and GOtv presents the best football in the world, with cracking action from the Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A lighting up your screens from Friday 16 to Monday 19 January.

A blockbuster weekend of European league football arrives at a pivotal point in the season, with title races sharpening and pressure mounting on contenders across France, England, Italy and Spain.

In Ligue 1, the headline act is PSG v Lille, a fixture that often carries more edge than the league table might suggest. PSG’s star-studded squad is expected to dominate domestically, but Lille remain one of the few sides capable of disrupting their rhythm through organisation, intensity and swift transitions. This match is as much a psychological test as a tactical one: a strong PSG performance reinforces authority, while any slip invites renewed belief among the chasing pack. Elsewhere in France, Marseille and Lyon will also be eager to build momentum, underlining the competitiveness beneath the Parisian summit.

The Premier League offers one of its defining spectacles with the Manchester derby. Manchester United v Manchester City rarely needs extra context, but with league positions and pride intertwined, this edition promises familiar drama. City’s control and depth face a United side desperate to assert identity and resilience on the biggest stage.

Later in the weekend, Nottingham Forest v Arsenal carries major title significance. Arsenal enter as favourites, yet trips to the City Ground are notoriously uncomfortable. Forest’s physicality and home atmosphere will test Arsenal’s composure, squad depth and championship credentials.

Serie A’s focus falls on the established powers navigating potentially awkward assignments. Inter’s visit to Udinese has all the hallmarks of a classic Italian test: disciplined hosts, limited space, and the need for patience. Napoli v Sassuolo brings a different challenge, as Sassuolo’s technical quality and fearlessness can trouble even the best-organised sides. Milan v Lecce, meanwhile, is about professionalism and control; champions-in-waiting are expected to dominate such fixtures, but Serie A history is littered with reminders that complacency is costly. With Juventus, Roma and others also in action, the Italian title race remains finely balanced.

In La Liga, the narrative is equally compelling. Real Madrid host Levante knowing that home fixtures against lower-ranked opposition must be converted into routine victories if a title push is to be sustained. Atletico Madrid v Alaves is another examination of efficiency over flair, with Diego Simeone’s side typically thriving on control and defensive discipline. The standout Spanish fixture, however, is Real Sociedad v Barcelona. Sociedad’s tactical intelligence and intensity at home make this one of the most demanding trips on the calendar, while Barcelona arrive seeking consistency and authority in a season of evolution.

Across all four leagues, the theme is clear: favourites must deliver, challengers sense opportunity, and every result carries weight. It’s a weekend where titles are not won, but they can certainly be jeopardised.

McTominay scores two as Napoli hold leaders Inter https://www.adomonline.com/mctominay-scores-two-as-napoli-hold-leaders-inter/ Sun, 11 Jan 2026 22:01:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617958 Inter Milan missed the chance to move five points clear at the top of Serie A as Scott McTominay scored twice to earn a draw for Napoli, who had manager Antonio Conte sent off.

Inter went ahead in the ninth minute when Federico Dimarco latched on to Marcus Thuram’s pass and fired home from an acute angle.

Eljif Elmas played a ball into the path of McTominay, who burst into the box and scored at the near post to equalise for Napoli with 26 minutes played.

The hosts went back in front in the 73rd minute when Hakan Calhanoglu’s thunderous penalty went in off the post with goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic diving the wrong way.

Amir Rrahmani was judged to have caught Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the box – and Conte was dismissed for his angry reaction to the decision.

However, Napoli drew level once more through McTominay’s superb first-time finish into the bottom corner nine minutes from time.

Inter are three points ahead of rivals Milan while Napoli move up to third, level on points with Roma.

Cristian Chivu’s side have the chance to increase their lead to six points when they host Lecee on Wednesday (19:45 GMT).

Hojlund double gives Napoli victory over Juventus https://www.adomonline.com/hojlund-double-gives-napoli-victory-over-juventus/ Sun, 07 Dec 2025 18:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607925 Napoli went top of Serie A after Rasmus Hojlund’s double saw them battle to a 2-1 victory over Juventus.

Returning to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for the first time since leaving Napoli in 2023, Juve boss Luciano Spalletti thought his team had fought back to claim a point when Kenan Yildiz restored parity in the 59th minute.

Yildiz struck at the end of a swift counter-attack, with Juve having been on the back foot for much of the contest despite facing a depleted Napoli team.

But Hojlund, who had opened the scoring with a poacher’s finish from David Neres’ cross early on, was on hand to seal all three points for Antonio Conte’s team when he headed in from close range with 12 minutes of normal time remaining.

Victory propels Napoli into top spot ahead of AC Milan playing against Torino on Monday, while Juve remain in seventh, eight points off the Serie A pacesetters.

Pulisic gives AC Milan derby spoils as Inter left frustrated https://www.adomonline.com/pulisic-gives-ac-milan-derby-spoils-as-inter-left-frustrated/ Sun, 23 Nov 2025 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2602989 Christian Pulisic’s second-half goal and Mike Maignan’s penalty save helped AC Milan to a 1-0 win over city rivals Inter to move second in Serie A.

Inter were chasing a victory which would have sent them top and started positively, but could not create any clear-cut chances.

In a half of few opportunities, Inter came closest when Francesco Acerbi’s header clipped the post in between two excellent Maignan saves to deny Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez.

Having weathered the first-half storm, Milan struck on the counter 10 minutes into the second half when Yann Sommer fumbled Alexis Saelmaeker’s shot straight into the path of Pulisic, who tapped into the empty net.

Inter looked to respond immediately and amped up the pressure, before Thuram won a penalty with 15 minutes remaining after he was caught on the foot by Strahinja Pavlovic.

Hakan Calhanoglu stepped up to take, but Maignan dived to his right to preserve Milan’s lead.

Inter huffed and puffed, but could not get close to scoring, allowing Milan to take the spoils in the derby and extend their unbeaten streak against Inter to six matches.

Inter Milan move top of Serie A with win over Lazio https://www.adomonline.com/inter-milan-move-top-of-serie-a-with-win-over-lazio/ Sun, 09 Nov 2025 17:30:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2597973 Inter Milan moved to the top of Serie A after a comfortable victory over Lazio thanks to goals from Lautaro Martinez and Ange-Yoan Bonny.

The Nerazzurri took an early lead when Alessandro Bastoni picked the pocket of Gustav Isaksen and teed up Martinez, who fired into the top-right corner.

Bonny added a second just after the hour, when he tapped in from close range after he got on the end of a low cross from Federico Dimarco.

Inter had the ball in the net again a few minutes later when Piotr Zielinski swept home, only for the video assistant referee to deem that Dimarco had handled in the build-up.

The closest Lazio came to scoring was an Oliver Provstgaard header that hit the woodwork.

Inter’s victory at San Siro put on them on 24 points after 11 matches – level with Roma but with superior goal difference.

Juventus announce Luciano Spalletti as new head coach https://www.adomonline.com/juventus-announce-luciano-spalletti-as-new-head-coach/ Thu, 30 Oct 2025 19:27:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2594460 Luciano Spalletti has been appointed the new Juventus head coach following the sacking of Igor Tudor.

The 66-year-old has a contract until the end of the current season as Juventus look to rescue things after a poor start to the campaign under Tudor.

In a statement on Juventus’ official website, the club wrote: “Luciano Spalletti is the new head coach of Juventus, signing an agreement with the club until June 30, 2026.

“Born in Certaldo, in the province of Florence, in 1959, Spalletti began his coaching career 30 years ago after playing for Spezia and Empoli, among others. He began his coaching career at the Tuscan club, winning the Serie C Coppa Italia before leading the club to Serie A promotion, establishing himself as one of the most innovative coaches in Italy.”

Tudor spent the majority of his playing career at Juventus, and was appointed in March earlier this year as manager. He won just 10 of his 24 games in charge in Turin. The side currently sit in seventh place in the table after nine Serie A matches, with 15 points.

However, they have not won a single UEFA Champions League match so far this season, and are 25th in the table with two points, just outside the play-off places, after losing to Real Madrid last week.

Spalletti won the Serie A title with Napoli in 2023, with the Italian then claiming he would not manage another team in Italy. He has, however, chosen to return to domestic football in his home country after a difficult spell with the national side.

He left that role in the summer after coming under pressure following a disappointing failure to retain the European Championship title at Euro 2024, and then losing to Norway 3-0 in the first qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup.

Juventus struggled last season after appointing Thiago Motta to replace Massimiliano Allegri, before he was replaced by Tudor.

Spalletti’s first match in charge of his new side will be against Serie A newboys Cremonese, who have impressed this season.

The side, who signed Jamie Vardy on a free transfer after he departed Leicester City at the end of last term, are one point behind Juventus, in eighth place.

Spalletti enjoyed a successful spell at Roma, winning the Coppa Italia twice, first in the 2006/7 and then the following season. He moved to Zenit St Petersburg, winning the Russian Premier League in 2010 and then the 2011/12 campaign, as well as winning the 2009/10 Russian Cup and the next season’s Russian Super Cup.

In a managerial career that began in 1993 with Empoli, he has coached a host of other notable Italian sides, including Internazionale and Udinese.

Juventus have won Serie A 36 times, but their latest league title came in 2019/20, and the last honour they won was the 2023/24 Coppa Italia.

Napoli edge out Lecce to move three points clear https://www.adomonline.com/napoli-edge-out-lecce-to-move-three-points-clear/ Tue, 28 Oct 2025 12:53:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2593459 Napoli moved three points clear at the top of Serie A with a narrow victory at Lecce.

David Neres’ free-kick into the box was headed home by Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa from close range in the 69th minute as Antonio Conte’s side took the lead.

Leece had a chance to open the scoring after 57 minutes when Francesco Camarda stepped up from the spot but his penalty was well saved by Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

The Serb has saved five of the past nine penalties he has faced in Serie A.

The result means Napoli move three points ahead of second-placed Roma having played a game more.

It was Napoli’s first game since Kevin de Bruyne suffered a significant thigh injury which will rule him out for a lengthy period.

The league headers host Como in their next league fixture on Saturday (17:00 GMT).

Juventus sack manager Tudor after seven months https://www.adomonline.com/juventus-sack-manager-tudor-after-seven-months/ Mon, 27 Oct 2025 09:30:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2592780 Juventus have sacked manager Igor Tudor following the side’s defeat by Lazio.

The Croatian joined the Italian club in March as Thiago Motta’s replacement.

But the 43-year-old has overseen an eight-match winless run, which has left the club eighth in the Serie A table.

Defeat against Lazio on Sunday was the side’s third consecutive loss in all competitions.

“The club thanks Igor Tudor and his entire staff for their professionalism and dedication over the past few months and wishes them all the best for their future careers,” a Juventus statement read.

Juventus added that Massimiliano Brambilla will take charge of the side for their Serie A fixture against Udinese on Wednesday (17:30 GMT).

The Old Lady are six points behind leaders Napoli, and have failed to win in their last five league matches.

Juventus are 25th in the Champions League group stage table, having lost once and drawn twice in their opening three matches.

Uefa ‘reluctantly’ approves La Liga & Serie A games to be played abroad https://www.adomonline.com/uefa-reluctantly-approves-la-liga-serie-a-games-to-be-played-abroad/ Tue, 07 Oct 2025 06:07:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2585909 Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin says the “regrettable” decision to allow two European league matches to be played abroad is “exceptional” and insists it “will not set a precedent”.

La Liga clubs Villarreal and Barcelona are now set to face each other in Miami in December in what would be the first European league fixture to be played abroad.

Then in February, AC Milan’s Italian Serie A match against Como will be played in Perth, Australia.

Uefa, European football’s governing body, has stressed its “clear opposition” to the plans, but “reluctantly” approved them because there is no legal framework to stop it.

“League matches should be played on home soil; anything else would disenfranchise loyal match-going fans and potentially introduce distortive elements in competitions,” said Ceferin.

“Our consultation confirmed the breadth of these concerns. I would like to thank the 55 national associations for their constructive and responsible engagement on such a sensitive issue.

“While it is regrettable to have to let these two games go ahead, this decision is exceptional and shall not be seen as setting a precedent. Our commitment is clear: to protect the integrity of national leagues and ensure that football remains anchored in its home environment.”

Fans’ group Football Supporters Europe (FSE) says the decision to play the two games abroad could inflict “long-lasting harm” on the sport, and wants tougher rules to prevent it happening again in the future.

“FSE will continue to stand firmly with fans in Spain and Italy in resisting these damaging proposals,” it said.

“Together with our members in these countries, we are looking into every possible option to counter these plans.

“By forcing through these matches, La Liga and Serie A risk undermining their own history and long-term success while inflicting long-lasting harm to football in Europe – and beyond.

“Now is the time for a solid regulatory framework that protects domestic competition.”

Uefa says it consulted stakeholders and found “widespread lack of support” for league matches to be played abroad, echoing concerns raised by fans, other leagues, clubs, players and European institutions.

But it said world governing body Fifa’s regulatory framework is “not clear and detailed enough” for it to block the plans.

Fifa set up a working group last year to look at the impact of playing competitive domestic matches overseas.

Last year, La Liga said it wanted to hold Barcelona v Atletico Madrid in Miami before dropping the idea because of time constraints.

In 2019, Barcelona also planned to stage a league match against Girona in Miami, but the idea was scrapped after opposition from Spain’s football association and its players’ union.

Other one-off matches, such as the Italian Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup, have been held abroad in recent years.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in August there are no plans to play an English top-flight match abroad.

The idea of the Premier League playing an extra round outside England – the so-called ’39th game’ – was raised in 2008 but shelved after criticism from fans and media.

San Siro could be demolished as sale approved https://www.adomonline.com/san-siro-could-be-demolished-as-sale-approved/ Wed, 01 Oct 2025 09:04:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584291 AC Milan and Inter Milan say they are “very pleased” after the city council approved the sale of the San Siro, a move that could lead to the iconic stadium being demolished.

A sale of the two Milan clubs’ home was approved after a lengthy overnight vote, with debates taking place for almost 12 hours.

The approval could lead to the 99-year-old ground and its surrounding areas being sold to both clubs for 197m euros (£172m), but it still needs to be officially confirmed by the city government.

The clubs said it is “a historic and decisive step for the future of the clubs and the city”.

The San Siro has been AC Milan’s stadium since 1926, but it has not been modernised since the 1990 World Cup.

They share the ground with city rivals Inter as joint tenants and repeated attempts to modernise it have failed.

The clubs plan to build a new 71,500-capacity ground as part of a large urban regeneration project, with there reportedly being aims for it to be ready in time Euro 2032, which Italy are joint hosts of alongside Turkey.

Last week, the clubs appointed architectural firms to design a new ground.

“The clubs look ahead with confidence and responsibility to the next steps of the process that will lead to the creation of a new stadium meeting the highest international standards – a world-class facility destined to become a new architectural icon for Milan and a symbol of the passion of football fans around the world,” a joint statement from the clubs said.

The break is over: Catch Premier League, La Liga and Serie A on SuperSport only on DStv and GOtv https://www.adomonline.com/the-break-is-over-catch-premier-league-la-liga-and-serie-a-on-supersport-only-on-dstv-and-gotv/ Fri, 12 Sep 2025 03:56:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577604 The football break is over, the action continues with the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A lighting up your screens from Friday 12 to Sunday 15 September.

The La Liga spotlight turns to San Sebastián, where Real Sociedad welcome Real Madrid in what could be a pivotal match as the title race warms up. Sociedad remain hampered by key absences, most notably captain Mikel Oyarzabal, sidelined with a knee injury, plus the long-term losses of Hamari Traoré, Brais Méndez, and Arsen Zakharyan. In contrast, Real Madrid arrive buoyed by the return to full training of Jude Bellingham and Aurélien Tchouaméni, even if they’re not likely to start, while Eder Militao’s recovery from injury strengthens their backline alongside Antonio Rüdiger.

Though lesser fixtures like Sevilla v Elche, Getafe hosting Oviedo, and Atletico Madrid versus Villarreal will stir local passions, the Basque capital promises top-tier drama. Further south, the Camp Nou stage is set for a classic clash: Barcelona against Valencia. While not yet ignited with the ferocity of a title decider, this fixture brings rich history and is a prime battleground for both sides to bounce back – or, if you like, to avoid falling behind teams like Celta Vigo versus Girona and Levante taking on Real Betis.

SuperSport’s pre-match analysis, range of camera angles, post-match banter, talk shows, and world-class commentary means you will squeeze every drop of enjoyment out of your football viewing!

Over in England, attention shifts to the Emirates, where Arsenal face Nottingham Forest in a test of hunger versus resilience. The Gunners continue to manage without the injured Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, and Bukayo Saka, thrusting Viktor Gyökeres, Leandro Trossard, and Eberechi Eze into leading roles. Forest, under Nuno Espírito Santo, remain a surprising force, though worrying issues are cropping up. While other Premier League fixtures – like West Ham vs. Spurs or the heavyweight Manchester derby – carry their own weight, this London fixture pulses with youthful energy and strategic intrigue.

Speaking of that derby, Manchester City versus United promises its usual alchemy of rivalries and ambition. Yet, it’s Juventus hosting Inter Milan that dominates headlines in Serie A. The Derby d’Italia is steeped in history, with this being the 184th league meeting – Juventus oppressing the head-to-head record historically yet Inter unbeaten in their last three face-offs.

It is a clash heavy with narrative, though overshadowed by the sensational Fiorentina v Napoli fixture, where the reigning champions look to continue their pace and Florence looks to disrupt the balance.

Of course, this weekend also includes other Serie A battles: Roma vs Torino, Atalanta’s trip to Lecce, and AC Milan’s response to their shocking recent home defeat as they aim to reset momentum. Each adds color to the broader story of leagues finding their rhythm early in the season.

In summary, this weekend offers some of the most tantalising fixtures across Europe: Real Sociedad seeking resistance at home against a returning Real Madrid, Barcelona chasing rhythm against Valencia, Arsenal navigating absences to contain a battle-hardened Forest, the eternal magnetism of the Manchester derby, and Italy’s own season-defining matchups with Derby d’Italia and Fiorentina’s high-stakes encounter with Napoli – all threaded through with the usual supporting fixtures that ensure drama unfolds across every table.

African Stars To Watch

Here are three top African Stars To Watch in another great week of football on SuperSport, available on DStv and GOtv.

Akor Adams (Sevilla / Nigeria)

  • Born: 29 January 2000 in Benue State, Nigeria
  • Nationality: Nigerian
  • Position: Forward
  • Senior club career: Sogndal (Norway, 2018 – 2021); Lillestrom SK (Norway, 2022 – 2023); Montpellier (France, 2023 – 2025); Sevilla (Spain, 2025 – present)
  • Career stats: 160 appearance, 57 goals

Akor Adams is poised to lead the line for Sevilla for their clash against Elche. Now fully fit and back in the squad, he’ll likely start as centre-forward, partnering with support attackers like Peque or Lukebakio. His style – smart movement into space and physical hold-up play – should offer a different attacking dimension. While not expected to shine instantly, he’ll embody Sevilla’s long-term offensive vision, aiming to regain form and help drive the team toward European contention.

Catch Adams in the following match on Friday 12 September, 21:00: Sevilla v Elche – LIVE on SuperSport La Liga and SuperSport Maximo 3

Manuel Benson (Burnley / Angola)

  • Career stats: 248 appearances, 38 goals

Manuel Benson, a pacey and direct right-winger, may feature as a dynamic outlet for Burnley in this fixture. Despite recent struggles with injuries and limited top-flight minutes, he brings a threat in one-on-one situations and goal-scoring instincts developed during his time with the Clarets. Likely starting from the bench, he could be used as an impact substitute, stretching Liverpool’s defence with his pace and dribbling when Burnley push for momentum.

Catch Benson in the following match on Sunday 14 September, 15:00: Burnley v Liverpool – LIVE on SuperSport Premier League and SuperSport Maximo 2

Amir Richardson (Fiorentina / Morocco)

  • Career stats: 142 appearances, 11 goals

Amir Richardson is poised to step into a crucial defensive midfield role for Fiorentina, anchoring the engine room amid a packed schedule. His blend of towering athleticism and technical finesse allows him to shield the defence, recover possession, and initiate attacks with measured control. After earning the trust of the Fiorentina faithful, he looks set to provide stability and energy – especially vital against Napoli’s dynamic midfield.

Fiorentina set to sign defender Tariq Lamptey from Brighton https://www.adomonline.com/fiorentina-set-to-sign-defender-tariq-lamptey-from-brighton/ Sat, 30 Aug 2025 17:03:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572989 Serie A side Fiorentina has reached an agreement to sign Tariq Lamptey from Brighton & Hove Albion in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The deal is reportedly worth up to £6 million, including add-ons, with Lamptey expected to travel to Italy this weekend to finalise the move.

Lamptey is likely to serve as a backup to Brazilian defender Dodo as Fiorentina begins their new season.

Last term, the 22-year-old’s campaign at Brighton was disrupted by recurring injuries, restricting him to just 15 appearances. Despite these setbacks, he contributed two goals and several assists.

The Ghana international did not feature in Brighton’s opening three matches of the current season against Fulham, Everton, and Oxford United.

Since joining the Seagulls from Chelsea, Lamptey has made 104 appearances, scoring three goals, and has established himself as a versatile option on the flank.

In international news, Lamptey has been named in Ghana’s squad for Matchday 7 and 8 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali next month.

I had no doubts – Kamaldeen Sulemana on joining Atalanta https://www.adomonline.com/i-had-no-doubts-kamaldeen-sulemana-on-joining-atalanta/ Fri, 01 Aug 2025 07:18:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562183

Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana says he had no second thoughts about joining Italian side Atalanta, describing the move as an opportunity he simply couldn’t pass up.

The 22-year-old sealed a long-term switch from English Championship side Southampton to the Serie A club this summer, in a deal reportedly worth up to £18 million.

In his first interview with Atalanta’s media team, the former Stade Rennais and FC Nordsjælland player expressed his enthusiasm about playing in the UEFA Champions League and competing at a higher level.

“I’m very excited to play in the Champions League. When Atalanta called, I had no doubts,” he said.
“This is one of the best clubs in Italy in recent years. I couldn’t say no. It was an unmissable opportunity.”

Atalanta, based in Bergamo, has earned a strong reputation in recent seasons for their attacking football, consistent European performances, and impressive player development.

They secured Champions League qualification after another successful domestic campaign.

Sulemana, who is renowned for his explosive pace and creativity on the flanks, believes the move to Italy will push him to reach new heights in his career.

He joins a promising crop of young talents drawn by the club’s ambitious project and will aim to make his mark in both Serie A and Europe’s top-tier competition.

I’m not here to replace anyone – Kamaldeen Sulemana apeaks after Atalanta move https://www.adomonline.com/im-not-here-to-replace-anyone-kamaldeen-sulemana-apeaks-after-atalanta-move/ Fri, 01 Aug 2025 07:16:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562180

Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana has made it clear that his move to Atalanta is about making a meaningful impact—not replacing anyone.

The 24-year-old joined the Serie A side this summer on a long-term deal from English Championship club Southampton.

His arrival comes amid reports that Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman is close to sealing a move to Inter Milan, prompting speculation that Sulemana has been signed as a direct replacement.

But the former Stade Rennais star was quick to dismiss that narrative during a media interaction on Atalanta’s pre-season tour.

“I didn’t come here to replace anyone,” he said.
“I came to play with whoever is here. I can learn a lot from Ademola; he has a lot to teach me.”

Sulemana added that his focus is solely on contributing to the team’s success.

“I’m here to contribute to the team, not to be someone’s substitute.”

Having risen through the ranks of the Right to Dream Academy and Danish club FC Nordsjælland before making his mark in France and England, Sulemana brings pace, flair, and experience to Atalanta’s attack.

He is expected to be a key figure for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side in the upcoming season.

Kamaldeen Sulemana completes transfer to Atalanta https://www.adomonline.com/kamaldeen-sulemana-completes-transfer-to-atalanta/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 16:42:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550757 Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana has completed his transfer to Italian Serie A club Atalanta B.C.

The 23-year-old winger moves from English Championship side Southampton, signing a four-year contract with an option to extend for an additional year.

The deal is reportedly worth €17.5 million, with potential add-ons reaching €4 million.

Sulemana reunites with his former Southampton coach, Ivan Jurić, who now leads Atalanta.

The former FC Nordsjaelland attacker has earned 44 caps for Ghana and featured in 26 matches last season, scoring once.

Since joining Southampton from French club Stade Rennais in January 2023, Sulemana made 34 appearances across all competitions, netting five goals and providing two assists.

He will also be teaming up again with Ghanaian national teammate Ibrahim Sulemana at Atalanta.

After a challenging period at Southampton, Kamaldeen Sulemana aims to make an immediate impact as he prepares for the 2025/26 season with his new club.

Gasperini replaces Ranieri as Roma manager https://www.adomonline.com/gasperini-replaces-ranieri-as-roma-manager/ Fri, 06 Jun 2025 15:00:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542438 Roma have appointed former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini as their new manager on a three-year contract.

Gasperini, who guided Atalanta to third in Italy’s Serie A and qualification for the Champions League this season, replaces Claudio Ranieri.

The ex-Leicester City and Chelsea boss stepped down as manager after leading Roma to fifth in Serie A and a Europa League spot.

Ranieri came out of retirement last November to take over as Roma boss following the sacking of Ivan Juric, and the 73-year-old has now taken on an executive role at the club.

Gasperini, 67, spent nine years in charge of Atalanta and won the Europa League with them in 2023-24 when they beat Bayer Leverkusen in the final.

“Gasperini’s career is defined by its creative tactics, dedication to hard work, and exceptional player development,” Roma said.

“Both ownership and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission.”

McTominay stunner helps Napoli win Serie A title https://www.adomonline.com/mctominay-stunner-helps-napoli-win-serie-a-title/ Sat, 24 May 2025 08:55:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2538073 Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay scored a spectacular scissor-kick volley to help Napoli beat Cagliari and take the club to their fourth Serie A title.

With second-placed Inter Milan leading 2-0 at Como, Napoli had to win to finish top of Serie A, with their supporters creating a sensational atmosphere at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

After the hosts dominated the opening stages, McTominay, who joined Napoli from Manchester United in a £25.7m move in August, made the breakthrough when he acrobatically connected with Matteo Politano’s right-wing cross.

Napoli knew a victory would see them become Italian champions for the second time in three seasons and Romelu Lukaku sealed it as he showed great strength and pace to hold off a challenge from Michel Adopo and slot the ball past Alen Sherri for the hosts’ second.

That goal sparked great scenes of celebration with the Napoli substitutes and coaching staff running on to the pitch, while Lukaku received a yellow card for taking his shirt off.

The rest of the match was played in a party mood as Napoli celebrated becoming Italian champions again having done so in 1986-87, 1989-90 and 2022-23, before the trophy presentation.

McTominay scored 12 goals and contributed four assists throughout the campaign, with him named Serie A Player of the Season shortly after the conclusion of the game.

Serie A: Como clash with Inter Milan as Napoli host Cagliari https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-como-clash-with-inter-milan-as-napoli-host-cagliari/ Fri, 23 May 2025 04:53:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2537610 It all comes down to this for Napoli and Inter Milan in the Serie A title race, as they take on Cagliari and Como respectively on the final day of the 2024-25 season.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Napoli, looking to win a second Scudetto in the space of two seasons, will host Cagliari at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and chase a victory to ensure that they finish at the top of the table.

“Nothing has changed, and we have to win,” said Napoli manager Antonio Conte, who has overseen their extraordinary push for glory. “The lads have been very good, driven by an extraordinary environment.”

Inter Milan, who are clinging onto hopes of defending their title, will be away to Como at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium. Ordinarily, such a match-up would see the Nerazzurri tipped as heavy favourites, but the Lariani have enjoyed some fantastic form in these final weeks of the season and could be a major stumbling block for the men from Milan.

“For the project to keep moving forward, the primary objective was to stay in the division,” Como’s Sergi Roberto explained. “They needed players used to competing at the top level and who could help the team a lot. At the start of the season especially, we lacked a bit of experience of Serie A. We dominated games but didn’t close out results.

“But we’re delighted that so many people want to see the team. The location is incredible, the lake is so beautiful. If they enjoy the game, see good football, then everything is perfect.”

The final round of matches will also be decisive in terms of European qualification, with Roma, Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina all jostling for a potential spot in the UEFA Champions League next season.

The pressure will be highest on Juventus for their clash away to Venezia (who are scrapping to avoid relegation), while Roma are away to Torino, Lazio host Lecce, and Fiorentina head to the Friuli Stadium for a clash with Udinese.

“Every team fights for something,” said Juve manager Igor Tudor, whose hopes of staying in the job beyond his caretaker role will be zero if he cannot secure Champions League football. “We will do everything we can to finish as high on the standings as possible.”

Serie A: Inter Milan tackle Lazio as Parma host Napoli https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-inter-milan-tackle-lazio-as-parma-host-napoli/ Fri, 16 May 2025 05:04:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2535429 The race for the ‘Scudetto’ remains the focus in Serie A, as the penultimate round of the 2024-25 season features Inter Milan tackling Lazio, and Napoli playing away to Parma.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Napoli have moved ever closer to an astonishing title triumph, with the arrival of manager Antonio Conte at the start of the season inspiring a massive improvement compared to the dis-function of the 2023-24 campaign, in which the Partenopei made an awful mess of defending the championship they won in such style the previous campaign.

Aside from Conte, one of the driving forces behind Napoli’s season has been midfielder Scott McTominay, who has looked a completely different player compared to his time at Manchester United.

Napoli fans, who will travel to the Ennio Tardini Stadium for a match away to Parma this weekend, have affectionately dubbed him as McTerminator, MacGyver and the bottle opener – for unlocking games.

But one nickname stands out above the rest for the midfielder: McFratm. It’s a Scottish twist on the Neapolitan word for ‘brother’, a nickname that takes pride over the others. Pressed on his favourite moniker in Italy, McTominay noted: “McFratm is the best one! [Pasquale] Mazzocchi [teammate] would say that one.”

The Scottish player added, “[Winning the Serie A title] would mean the world, obviously the squad did it two years ago. […] Let’s stay calm and see where it gets us.”

Reigning champions Inter Milan, meanwhile, will welcome Lazio to the San Siro. This is always a tough clash for Nerazzurri manager Simone Inzaghi, as not only are Lazio routinely tough opponents, he also has a special connection to the Rome club, as he was both a successful player and manager for Le Aquile.

“For me, matches against Lazio will never be the same as any others,” said Inzaghi. “I don’t forget my journey there. The trophies won, first on the pitch and then on the bench. […] I was lucky enough to have been at Lazio. Now, I just think about Inter.”

This round of Serie A action also features Roma hosting AC Milan, as the Giallorossi look to continue their push for a top European place, while the Rossoneri are resigned to wanting this disappointing campaign to come to an end as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Serie A: AC Milan host Bologna as Napoli clash with Genoa https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-ac-milan-host-bologna-as-napoli-clash-with-genoa/ Fri, 09 May 2025 05:12:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533227 The thrilling title race in Serie A will continue on Matchday 36, with Inter Milan playing away to Torino, while Napoli will welcome Genoa to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Napoli’s hopes of winning a second Scudetto in the space of three seasons will depend on them being able to overcome the Rossoblu, as manager Antonio Conte continues to drive his team toward what would be an amazing title triumph.

Ironically, Conte has strongly suggested that he will be leaving the Partenopei at the end of the season – regardless of whether they are crowned champions or not – as his relationship with club owner Aurelio de Laurentiis has broken down.

“I cannot live on miracles rather than planning. I don’t want to be massacred. I saw looting of our projects,” said the fiery tactician. “I am happy in Naples, so is my family, as there is sun, wonderful food, the people are welcoming, but that is my private life and I cannot just stop there.

“I bring with me a responsibility and you in the media are the first to give it to me, saying that if Conte is on the bench, then the team will win. Seeing as you put that responsibility on me, I don’t want to let the fans down. I cannot live on miracles rather than planning.”

Inter Milan will look to take advantage of any slip ups from their championship rivals, and they will hope that hosts Torino – who have little to play for in the remainder of the season, as they will neither be relegated, nor qualify for Europe – do not prove antagonistic in the quest for three points.

“We have to be stronger than our fatigue,” said Nerazzurri manager Simone Inzaghi, whose side has gone deep in every competition they have played in this season. “This will be about our mentality, our desire, our hunger for success.”

Elsewhere in this round, Atalanta and Roma will have a potential thriller when they meet at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo. While La Dea are on course to finish in the Champions League places, the Giallorossi are competing hard to secure European football for next term.

“We’re in it, we want to do well and we want our fans to be proud of how we finish the season. It started badly, but we want to end it as well as possible,” said Roma manager Claudio Ranieri, who was parachuted in earlier in the campaign after the capital city club had dispensed with both Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric.

Other matches to watch include Lazio hosting Juventus at the Olimpico Stadium – a clash which will also have a major effect on the battle for European qualification – as well as AC Milan hosting Bologna at the iconic San Siro Stadium.

Serie A: Lecce host Napoli as Juventus travel to Bologna https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-lecce-host-napoli-as-juventus-travel-to-bologna/ Fri, 02 May 2025 06:05:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530813 The Scudetto battle between Inter Milan and Napoli continues to be the driving narrative in Serie A, as Matchday 35 brings 10 matches from Friday 2 to Monday 5 May 2025.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Napoli will have the first chance to land a blow in the title race, as they face Lecce at the Ettore Giardiniero Stadium early on Saturday evening. The Partenopei are strong favourites, but would do well not to underestimate I Lupi, who are fighting for survival in Italy’s top flight.

“Beyond everything else, we will have the opportunity to get closer to a prestigious goal that could not be foreseen at the beginning of the year,” said Napoli manager Antonio Conte.

“But we have said it, we are there. Clearly we will try to make as much trouble as possible until the end… We are doing something that goes beyond expectations given what happened last year. We have to continue to feed it [our dream] with all our strength. It has not been easy so far and there will be other obstacles to overcome. We will have to be as good as we have been so far, without excuses.”

Inter Milan will be in action immediately after their rivals, hosting Verona at the San Siro. Incredibly, Verona have not beaten the Nerazzurri in any official match since February 1992, and given the home side’s hunger to retain their Scudetto, it’s hard to see that statistic ending any time soon.

“The credit goes to the players, who work hard and sacrifice themselves together,” said Inter manager Simone Inzaghi.

“We’ve been together for four years. At the start, we knew we had a strong team but also that we needed to fix some things. We’ve managed to win important trophies. It’s a huge satisfaction that rewards the work of myself and the staff.”

This round of Serie A action will also feature Roma hosting Fiorentina at the Olimpico Stadium early on Sunday evening. Both teams are chasing European qualification, making this a key six-pointer, and the Giallorossi will have a little extra motivation on their side, as they seek to avenge a 1-5 thrashing suffered at the hands of La Viola back in October 2024.

“Would you bet a Euro on us qualifying for the Champions League? You want to lose it? Let’s be honest. If we make it to the Champions League, it’s because the others collapse and we pull off a masterpiece,” said Roma manager Claudio Ranieri.

Also on offer is a clash between Torino and Venezia on Friday night, Lazio and Atalanta visiting Empoli and Monza respectively on Sunday, and a round-closing Monday night clash between Genoa and AC Milan at the Comunale Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

Serie A: Atalanta host Lecce as Inter clash with Roma https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-atalanta-host-lecce-as-inter-clash-with-roma/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 06:00:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528656 Reigning champions Inter Milan will face Roma in the pick of Matchday 34 fixtures in Serie A this weekend.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Inter will welcome Roma to the San Siro for a clash which will be key to their hopes of retaining the Scudetto, though the visitors are fighting to get into Europe themselves and will head to Milan with hope that they can put a spanner in the works for the Nerazzurri.

“We continue this journey. It’s a struggle but it makes us proud,” said Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi, who is worried about the effect of fatigue on his team.

“It’s a very heavy season but we must adjust and are doing so with everyone sacrificing themselves to help. Besides physical fatigue, there’s also mental fatigue. Staying focused isn’t easy but I’m fortunate to coach a group that gives everything for these colours.

“We must continue on this path […]. It will require a lot of sacrifice, and we are ready to put it on the field.”

Inter’s main title threats, Napoli, will host Torino at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. The Partenopei have mostly thrived under the pressure of being championship contenders, according to manager Antonio Conte.

“The fans sense the team is going beyond its limitations and that can only be appreciated,” said the veteran tactician. “There are dangers in every game, as from now to the end of the campaign, every team has an objective it needs to achieve, whether it’s fighting for safety, a place in Europe or the Scudetto.”

Elsewhere in the Italian top flight in this round, Lazio will host Parma and continue their push for a place in the top European competition next season, AC Milan’s messy season continues with a trip to relegation-threatened Venezia, Juventus will welcome Monza to the Allianz Stadium in Turin, and Atalanta host Genoa in Bergamo.

Juve manager Igor Tudor has shaken things up at the Old Lady: “Every match should be approached like a final, I reiterated this to the whole team. Past and future always count for little: I am happy because I found the lads with a desire to work and improve, this has been my good fortune. Their response surprised me positively, they are the ones who make the difference.”

Serie A postpones games after Pope Francis dies aged 88 https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-postpones-games-after-pope-francis-dies-aged-88/ Mon, 21 Apr 2025 13:24:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527201 Monday’s Serie A fixtures have been postponed following the death of Pope Francis, the Italian league announced.

Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church and a lifelong football fan has died, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday. He was 88.

“Following the passing of His Holiness, Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A can confirm that today’s league games in Serie A and Primavera 1 have been postponed,” the league said in a statement.

Torino were set to host Udinese, Cagliari were due to face off against Fiorentina, while Lazio — fresh from their Europa League quarterfinal disappointment in midweek — were meant to travel to Genoa, and Parma were scheduled to play Juventus.

The fixtures have been rescheduled for Wednesday, with the Coppa Italia semifinal second leg between Inter Milan and AC Milan kicking off as originally scheduled.

A minute’s silence will be observed before all sports events this week, the Italian Olympic Committee said.

Serie A’s reigning champions and current league leaders Inter Milan paid tribute to Francis in a post on X which described him as “a man of faith, humility and dialogue who was able to speak to everyone’s heart.”

Roma described Francis’ death as “a loss that deeply saddens our city and the entire world,” in a post.

“His faith, his humility, his courage and his dedication have touched the hearts of millions of people, making him a moral reference of our time.”

From meetings with Diego Maradona to the passion for his beloved Buenos Aires club, San Lorenzo, Francis was an avid football fan. And a promoter of sports in general.

Francis’ passion for football became known almost immediately after he was elected pope in 2013 when Argentine club San Lorenzo posted a photo of him holding up the club’s crest.

San Lorenzo, one of the oldest teams in the Argentine Football Association, performed well after Francis was elected as the 266th pope in March 2013. The team won the title in 2013 and then claimed the Copa Libertadores for the first time a year later.

Club officials traveled twice to the Vatican carrying trophies to thank Francis for his support. A planned new San Lorenzo stadium is set to be named after him.

Francis met his fellow Argentine Maradona twice as pope. There was a special audience in connection with a charity football match in 2014 when Maradona presented the pontiff with a football shirt, emblazoned with the name “Francisco” — Spanish for Francis — and Maradona’s iconic No. 10.

“I think we all now realize he’s a [star],” Maradona said after another meeting in 2015. “I’m Francis’ top fan.”

When Maradona died in 2020, Francis remembered the football legend in his prayers.

“Francis was a special Pope, able to illuminate in his time like only the greatest can,” former Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon said in a post on Instagram. “He showed us the way with great courage and moved our souls. I will carry his example forever in my heart.”

Serie A: Inter Milan clash with Cagliari as Lazio host Roma https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-inter-milan-clash-with-cagliari-as-lazio-host-roma/ Sat, 12 Apr 2025 06:34:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2524616 The ‘Derby della Capitale’ between Lazio and Roma headlines Matchday 32 in Serie A this weekend, while Inter Milan, Napoli and Atalanta will chase home victories.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

The heated rivalry between capital city clubs Lazio and Roma will have another chapter written into its history when the teams clash at the Olimpico Stadium on the evening of Sunday 13 April – with both teams fighting to secure some form of European qualification for next season.

Roma emerged as 2-0 winners over Lazio when the teams last met (in early January), and manager Claudio Ranieri will be determined to lead the Gialorossi to a league ‘double’ over Le Aquile.

“They always call me in problematic situations so I put on my helmet and start working, trying to instil serenity and desire to do,” said Ranieri, who was parachuted in earlier this season to rescue Roma after a poor start.

“It seemed logical to put world champions in the team… I tried to restore confidence and self-esteem, the quality of this team is very high but it needs to be sprinkled with the desire to get the win.”

Reigning champions Inter Milan will look to boost their hopes of back-to-back Scudettos when they welcome Cagliari to the San Siro on Saturday, while title rivals Atalanta and Napoli will be in action against Bologna and Empoli on Sunday and Monday respectively.

Nerazzurri manager Simone Inzaghi is balancing a demanding schedule, as his team tackles this clash in between the two legs of a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie against Bayern Munich.

“The key is sacrificing together,” said Inzaghi. “We’ll enjoy the view from the top but focus on recharging our physical and mental energy.”

Partenopei boss Antonio Conte, meanwhile, is urging his team to keep up their fight for the title right until the end of the campaign: “To us it changes nothing, we have to look at ourselves and give everything. Then in the end we’ll see the products of our efforts. I’ve always been critical when there was something to be critical about.”

The round opens on Friday with AC Milan chasing an away win against Udinese, and will also feature Juventus tackling Lecce in Turin, and Parma visiting Florence for a clash with Fiorentina.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Roma will welcome Juventus to the Stadio Olimpico for a match which will help shape qualification for next season’s UEFA club competitions. That Juve are fighting for Europe rather than competing for the title is a disappointment, but new manager Igor Tudor (who replaced Thiago Motta last month) is hungry to end the season as strongly as possible.

“We cannot focus on what came before,” said Tudor, a former Juve player. “The matches ahead of us are all that I care about. Juve needs to be as high on the table as possible, and it is my job to ensure that happens.”

Champions Inter Milan will be away to Parma at the Ennio Tardini Stadium – a potential banana skin for the Nerazzurri, as their hosts are battling for survival in the Italian top flight, and manager Simone Inzaghi has urged his team to take nothing for granted.

“We’ll have to keep our focus high. We have to play a match of intensity, determination, and aggression,” said the Inter boss.

Inter’s title rivals, Napoli and Atalanta, have matches that are more difficult – on paper at least. The Partenopei travel to the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium for a clash with Bologna, while La Dea will host Lazio at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

Napoli manager Antonio Conte has stressed the importance of consistency: “It’s not like you can raise or lower your level of enthusiasm based on the match. You always have to be consistent. Titles are won by teams who are consistent, focused, on everything. Not with all the ups and downs.”

Elsewhere in the Italian top flight, this round will also feature AC Milan hosting Fiorentina at the iconic San Siro. The Rossoneri will be looking to avenge a 2-1 defeat suffered at the hands of La Viola when the teams met back in October 2024.

Milan have struggled for form this season, but manager Sergio Conceicao feels that leaning on American star Christian Pulisic could help the team: “He is a player with great technical qualities and very intelligent. He can play behind the striker or on the wings but coming inside is the best position.”

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Napoli and AC Milan will meet at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on the evening of Sunday 30 March, with the hosts desperate to pick up three points and keep themselves on course for Scudetto glory.

The visitors from up North, meanwhile, are looking to salvage a struggling season, but a win in this match would only serve to help arch rivals Inter Milan in their title bid – hardly a great position for manager Sergio Conceicao and his players to find themselves in.

“I’ve made mistakes, as all coaches do,” admitted Conceicao. “Regarding principles and team dynamics, I have my own characteristics, and I always try to make the best decisions. Over my career, I have had more satisfactions than disappointments.”

When Asked what was needed to turn things around at Milan, the Portuguese added: “With results. Two things are crucial: working at the maximum and doing more as a team while also limiting mistakes, unforced errors and bad luck in matches. There is no other way but to work. You don’t believe just to believe – you believe to achieve.”

The Matchday gets going on Saturday 29 March, with Como and Venezia hosting Empoli and Bologna respectively – for matches which could shape the relegation picture – before Juventus host Genoa and Roma head to Lecce in successive evening games.

Sunday, aside from the Napoli v AC Milan clash, will also feature reigning champions Inter hosting Udinese, as well as a clash between Fiorentina and Atalanta which promises to be another cracker – the last three meetings of the teams have all produced five goals! La Dea need a repeat of their 3-2 win from earlier in the season to keep up their title ambitions.

“We must never stop them dreaming. We may say it’s impossible, but if you believe enough, things can become possible,” said Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini. “We had never reached this stage of the season in the running for the top spot, so you never know.”

The round closes on Monday 31 March with Verona hosting Parma and Lazio welcoming Torino to the Olimpico Stadium in Rome.

Juventus sack boss Motta and replace him with Tudor https://www.adomonline.com/juventus-sack-boss-motta-and-replace-him-with-tudor/ Sun, 23 Mar 2025 18:45:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2517919 Juventus have sacked manager Thiago Motta after just nine months in charge and replaced him Croatian Igor Tudor.

Former Italy international Motta, 42, departs with the 36-time Serie A champions one point outside the Champions League qualification places in fifth.

His final match in charge was a 3-0 defeat at Fiorentina last weekend, having been thrashed 4-0 at home by Atalanta the previous week.

The Turin club also lost to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League play-off round and are out of the Coppa Italia, which they won last season.

Former midfielder Tudor made more than 150 appearances for Juventus between 1998 and 2007.

His first managerial job was with Hajduk Split in 2013 and has since taken charge of the likes of Galatasaray, Udinese, Verona and Marseille.

The 46-year-old’s most recent role was a three-month spell at Lazio at the end of last season.

Tudor’s first game in charge will be a home match against Genoa in Serie A on Saturday.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Atalanta and Inter will meet at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on the late evening of Sunday 16 March, with this clash set to have a key effect on the battle for the Scudetto. The visiting Nerazzurri will back themselves to overcome La Dea yet again, having claimed seven successive wins in this rivalry across all competitions. In addition, Atalanta have not beaten Inter in a competitive match since way back in November 2018.

Nonetheless, La Dea manager Gian Piero Gasperini believes his team is right in the mix to challenge for the title: “I think Atalanta’s campaign has been extraordinary and we are very proud of that,” he emphasised

“We’re also getting into the latter stages of the season that become decisive with many games starting to weigh on the top clubs. There are many hidden dangers out there, which is what makes Serie A so fascinating.”

With at least one of Inter and Atalanta guaranteed to drop points, Napoli will look to pile the pressure on the pair by winning earlier on Sunday when they play away to strugglers Venezia. Partenopei manager Antonio Conte has warned his team against complacency – having seen them suffer a defeat in similar circumstances to Como a couple of weeks back.

“We have to be very careful,” said Conte. “Scoring one more goal than the opposition is my preferred approach, but we always work on balance between both phases. It happens, you can go on a run of clean sheets or concede regularly. What matters is consistency in results.”

The weekend also sees Fiorentina and Juventus renew their rivalry. La Viola have often felt ‘bullied’ by Juve, who have routinely bought the Florence side’s best players down the years. The teams played out a cracking 2-2 draw in December last year, with former Juve striker Moise Kean scoring a late equaliser for the team in purple.

Elsewhere, the weekend’s action opens on Friday night at the Communale Luigi Ferraris Stadium with Genoa hosting Lecce, while Saturday’s action is headlined by AC Milan hosting Como. Sunday will also see the Rome clubs in action, with Lazio away to Bologna and Roma hosting Cagliari at the Olimpico Stadium.

Atalanta crush Juventus 4-0 to remain third in Serie A https://www.adomonline.com/atalanta-crush-juventus-4-0-to-remain-third-in-serie-a/ Sun, 09 Mar 2025 22:06:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2512824 Atalanta cruised to a 4-0 win at Juventus on Sunday to strengthen their grip on third place in Serie A while snapping the hosts’ five-game winning streak in the league.

Both teams had chances to break the deadlock early on, but it was Mateo Retegui who put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot following a handball by Weston McKennie just before the half-hour mark.

Marten de Roon pounced on a rebound off Juve defender Lloyd Kelly to fire the ball into an open net early in the second half, before Davide Zappacosta made it 3-0, scoring from close-range after a brilliant back-heel pass from Sead Kolasinac in the 66th minute.

Ademola Lookman sealed the rout as he netted 13 minutes from time after his shot took a deflection off a Juventus defender before beating goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side sit third with 58 points, three behind leaders Inter Milan, while Juventus remain fourth on 52 points.

Atalanta and Juve have both been just off the pace set by Napoli and Inter Milan at the top of the standings, but this clash at the Allianz Stadium will nonetheless be crucial in deciding which teams represent Italy in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The Bianconeri and La Dea have played to draws in five of their last seven meetings across all competitions, with Juve manager Thiago Motta left frustrated by the teams’ 1-1 stalemate when they met as recently as January.

“It’s clear that we can’t be happy with the result; we go on the pitch to win. We played well, created some interesting situations, but we weren’t good enough to score,” Motta explained. “It’s true that we have drawn a lot this season and are not happy about that, we cannot be happy with a draw.”

Elsewhere, Inter Milan will back themselves to win at home to Monza, while Napoli will face a tougher task when hosting Fiorentina. The Partenopei’s manager, Antonio Conte, is looking to use his experience to guide his team through the stress and strain of the ongoing title battle against the Nerazzurri.

“You need to have cool heads and know how to navigate the ship and how to react in different situations. What we need to do now is see the harbour and get there safe and sound, and possibly arrive with what we deserve to achieve,” said Conte.

“But the important thing is to get to the port, safe and sound. Once you get there, you just have to take a breath and understand what happened during the trip. As a captain, I have to give the right directions, both in the storm and in calm seas. Because even when the sea is calm, you have to be careful. A captain has to count on the crew, in this case it’s the players, who are exceptional.”

The round also features Roma away to Empoli, Lazio hosting Udinese, and AC Milan visiting Lecce at the Ettore Giardiniero Stadium.

Napoli snatch late draw against Inter to keep title race bubbling https://www.adomonline.com/napoli-snatch-late-draw-against-inter-to-keep-title-race-bubbling/ Sat, 01 Mar 2025 22:51:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2510127 Napoli substitute Philip Billing rescued a deserved 1-1 draw at home to Serie A leaders Inter Milan on Saturday, leaving the title rivals separated by a point at the top of the table.

Federico Dimarco put defending champions Inter ahead in the 22nd minute with a superb free kick to silence the capacity crowd but Danish midfielder Billing was the hero of Naples, coming off the bench to equalise in the 87th minute.

Inter have 58 points with Napoli on 57, two ahead of Atalanta who were held to a 0-0 draw by Venezia on Saturday.

After a nervy, scrappy start from both sides at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, with the game repeatedly interrupted as players received treatment, it was only fitting that the opening goal came from a set-piece.

Dimarco curled his free kick around the wall and inside the far post. Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret could only look on as the ball nestled in the corner of the net and the game finally erupted into life.

Once Napoli absorbed the sucker-punch, they began to push forward in search of an equaliser. A long pass was met first time by striker Romelu Lukaku but his effort smashed into the side netting.

Seconds later Giacomo Raspadori’s first touch took him past Inter keeper Josep Martinez wide in the area but his second was too heavy and the ball rolled wide with Lukaku waiting in the middle of the area.

Just before the break Raspadori managed to get the ball into a dangerous position but Lukaku’s strike from the edge of the six-yard box was blocked by Alessandro Bastoni and Inter held their lead going into the interval.

Napoli were camped out in the Inter area for much of the second half, forcing corner after corner. Stanislav Lobotka fired over from the edge of the area after a one-two with Lukaku.

Scott McTominay then had a powerful strike parried away by Martinez, while an Inter counter-attack needed Meret to come well out of his area and clear the danger with Denzel Dumfries bearing down on the Napoli goal.

Napoli were looking to put a dismal February behind them where a run of three draws and one defeat had allowed Inter to steal top spot, but they looked set to slip further behind until manager Antonio Conte sprang Billing from the bench.

The Dane, signed on loan from Bournemouth in January, made his Napoli debut in last weekend’s defeat at Como but needed just eight minutes to make his mark against Inter.

Played in by Lobotka, Billing’s first effort was saved by the leg of Martinez but he poked home the rebound to keep Napoli’s title hopes very much alive.

The round of fixtures begins on Friday evening 28 February as Fiorentina hosts Lecce at Stadio Artemio Franchi. Italian striker Moise Kean has been in fine form, but it was worrying scenes in the previous matchday as he collapsed on the pitch following a head collision.

A positive update has been made on the player’s progress. “ACF Fiorentina announces that Moise Kean was discharged from the Verona hospital during the night and returned to Florence. The clinical and diagnostic tests carried out were all negative,” said the club in a statement. Hopefully, he’ll be back in action soon.

Saturday afternoon 1 March brings the clash between Atalanta and Venezia at the Gewiss Stadium.

Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman scored a brace against Empoli last time out, and it was a great response after being criticised by his manager Gian Piero Gasperini for missing a penalty in the UEFA Champions League.

Four-time CAF Player of the Year winner Samuel Eto’o heaped praise on the current holder for his courage. “The time of the match and the next. For us, you are and will always be our champion. “But I was born with football inside me. I would play until seven in the evening, and when I came home, she would punish me. She would take my football shoes and confiscate them, so I had to hide them.” Will his choice to play football pay off?

Serie A: Inter Milan host Genoa as Napoli head to Como https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-inter-milan-host-genoa-as-napoli-head-to-como/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 04:45:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2507030 Napoli and Inter Milan will continue their Serie A title battle when they face Como and Genoa respectively, as part of Matchday 26 in the Italian top flight.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Inter will host Genoa at the San Siro on Saturday night, with Nerazzurri manager Simone Inzaghi wary of the threat posed by their opponents – after the teams played out a 2-2 draw when they last met in August of 2024.

“This is a team that fought back to make a draw against us,” said Inzaghi, referencing a late equaliser from Junior Messias. “We cannot afford to underestimate anyone. It is this time of the season when mistakes can be costly, and we need to make sure we are applying pressure to our rivals.”

Napoli will have the chance to respond on Sunday afternoon when they face Como at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium. The hosts are fighting to ensure their top-flight survival, with manager Cesc Fabregas hoping that former Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli can add some creativity and penetration in attack.

“He was a fantastic player,” said Fabregas of the English attacker. “I played against him many times. I’m glad if I can help him rediscover himself.”

Elsewhere, AC Milan will face a tricky test away to Torino, with Rossoneri manager Sergio Conceicao hoping to see a more aggressive approach from his team when it comes to winning back possession.

“The aggression that I want without the ball is achieved through training, I haven’t had time to do it,” admitted the Portuguese. “Their characteristics aren’t even these, we had to understand the right area to press and then restart strong. There were moments that I liked and others not so much.”

Also keep an eye out for Lazio’s trip to Venezia; Atalanta and Juventus will back themselves to win away to Empoli and Caglirai respectively; and Roma will be in action on Monday night when they host Monza at the Olimpico Stadium.

“We need to keep taking it one game at a time, we can’t take our fans for a ride saying we are targeting this or that tournament. All we can promise to them is that we’ll give our best in every game,” noted Giallorossi manager Claudio Ranieri, whose team is juggling commitments across the UEFA Europa league, Coppa Italian and Serie A.

Inter Milan denied Serie A top spot in loss at Juventus https://www.adomonline.com/inter-milan-denied-serie-a-top-spot-in-loss-at-juventus/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 01:29:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505107 Inter Milan missed the chance to go top of Serie A as the defending champions fell to defeat at Juventus.

After leaders Napoli were held to a 2-2 draw at Lazio on Saturday, victory would have left Simone Inzaghi’s Inter side first at the end of a matchday for the first time since September.

But Francisco Conceicao’s 74th-minute finish proved decisive in Turin to leave Inter two points behind 2022-23 champions Napoli.

Atalanta are three points further back in third after their goalless draw against Cagliari, while Juventus climbed back into the top four on goal difference from Lazio.

While it was only Inter’s third defeat of the campaign, it was their second loss in three games – and they have won just once in four.

Conceicao settled a close encounter after Randal Kolo Muani turned brilliantly inside the penalty area with quick feet to trick a couple of defenders, before rolling the ball into the path of his team-mate to slam home.

That came shortly after Juventus goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio had pushed Marcus Thuram’s first-time shot on to the post to keep the score level.

Denzel Dumfries also produced a superb goalline clearance from Teun Koopmeiners’ shot to keep Inter in contention, but Inzaghi’s title chasers were unable to salvage a point despite their pressure in the closing stages.

It was a third consecutive league win for Juventus, who have still only lost once in 25 league games this season.

They will now turn their attention to progressing in the Champions League on Wednesday, having won the first leg of their knockout phase play-off against PSV Eindhoven 2-1.

Serie A: AC Milan host Verona as Juventus clash with Inter Milan https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-ac-milan-host-verona-as-juventus-clash-with-inter-milan/ Fri, 14 Feb 2025 06:42:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2504359 The latest edition of the ‘Derby d’Italia’ between Juventus and Inter Milan headlines Matchday 25 of the 2024-25 Serie A season.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Juventus and Inter will do battle at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, with the Bianconeri looking to boost their hopes of a top-four finish and a guaranteed place in the UEFA Champions League next season, while the Nerazzurri want to keep up the pressure in the race for the Scudetto against Napoli.

The teams played out an incredible 4-4 draw when they last met in October 2024, with Inter manager Simone Inzaghi still feeling upset that his team gave up a two-goal lead in that clash.

“We lost our shape a bit, then on the fourth goal we made a series of mistakes. These compromised a match we clearly deserved to win,” said Inzaghi. “There is bitterness, but as a coach I must analyse… It was frustrating, as we were facing a Juventus side whose greatest strength is defence and we created so many scoring opportunities without winning.”

Napoli’s title ambitions will face a stringent test when they take on Lazio at the Olimpico Stadium in Rome. Le Aquile have routinely gotten the better of the team from Naples in recent years – including a 1-0 win at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium earlier this season – but Partenopei manager Antonio Conte will be hungry to break that trend.

“Lazio are not a meteorite, they are doing very well,” Conte explained. “I’m not disappointed or unhappy, during this journey there are some stumbles, there will probably be others, this is the team I want to see but we need to have more quality in the final metres.”

This round of Italian top-flight action also features Atalanta hosting Cagliari in Bergamo; AC Milan will target a win at home to Verona; and Roma face a potential banana skin away to Parma, with the Crociati fighting for their survival in Serie A.

“We need to stay up, there’s nothing else to add. We’re a newly-promoted team full of young players, so avoiding relegation has to be our only target,” said Parma manager Fabio Pecchia.

Serie A preview: Empoli host AC Milan as Napoli clash with Udinese https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-preview-empoli-host-ac-milan-as-napoli-clash-with-udinese/ Fri, 07 Feb 2025 06:00:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2501807 Serie A‘s incredible title race will possibly take another twist when Matchday 24 features Napoli hosting Udinese and Inter Milan taking on Fiorentina.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Napoli have put together an amazing campaign under firebrand manager Antonio Conte, as they attempt to win a second Scudetto in the space of three seasons – albeit with a side which has a far different identity and ‘vibe’ compared to the class of 2022-23.

This round they will welcome Udinese to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, with Conte praising his side for their resilience and determination: “We are facing some situations, both in terms of injuries and most recently the transfer market, situations that would kill a bull, but we are still standing.

Conte continued, “We don’t complain, we keep working and I always say that I have a group of players who are eager to work hard. The improvement of each individual player then allows us to improve collectively too.”

Reigning champions Inter Milan, meanwhile, will have a challenging home match against Fiorentina at the iconic San Siro. Though the Viola have struggled to replicate their early-season form, they will still represent a tricky challenge for the Nerazzurri.

“Inter are the best team in the league, and this hasn’t changed after a slow start to 2025,” said Italian football legend Fabio Capello. “However, it remains to be seen whether they still have the desire to play as they used to do before Riyadh [the Super Cup loss to arch rivals AC Milan], putting the same intensity in and being willing to dominate proceedings.

“Recently, they’ve been more oriented to defend and counter-attack. Inter used to press opponents, but now they defend with a low block. What they need is that desire to win the ball high up the pitch.”

This round will also feature Atalanta tackling Verona at the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium; Lazio welcome Monza to the Olimpico Stadium; Roma will visit Venezia’s Pier Luigi Penzo’s Stadium; and AC Milan head to the inspiringly-named Computer Gross Arena for a clash with Empoli.

“Once we get to Milan we need to want even more because we need to continue the success, hunger, desire with personal goals to get to the end of our career and be proud of what we’ve done,” said Milan manager Sergio Conceicao.

Serie A: Milan clash with Inter as Napoli travel to Roma https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-milan-clash-with-inter-as-napoli-travel-to-roma/ Fri, 31 Jan 2025 06:56:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2499550 The latest edition of the ‘Derby della Madonnina’ between AC Milan and Inter Milan is the headline clash in Matchday 23 of the current Serie A season, played from Friday 31 January to Monday 3 February 2025.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

The meeting of the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri at the iconic San Siro will be early on Sunday evening, with the team in red and black chasing a hat-trick of wins over their rivals this season. Milan defeated Inter 2-1 in the teams’ last league clash in September 2024, as well as 3-2 in the Super Cup final earlier this month.

Rossoneri superstar Rafael Leao has praised the impact of new coach Sergio Conceicao: “Mentality [is the biggest change], the desire to always be in the opposition half, to push the other team back. This is what we are trying to do, we haven’t had much time to work, but he has already brought in his ideas and the players are trying to absorb what he wants.”

The Milan derby on Sunday will be immediately followed by the ‘Derby del Sole’ between Roma and Napoli at the Olimpico Stadium. While the Giallorossi are looking to recover their season under the management of veteran Claudio Ranieri, the Partenopei are chasing Scudetto glory with Antonio Conte, and need a three-point haul in this clash to remain on course.

“This team does not give up and I like that, the lads must be praised for that attitude. When my team gives everything it has, then I am happy,” said Ranieri, who believes that forward Artem Dovbyk will have an important role to play.

“It’s true he [Dovbyk] doesn’t shoot much, but we too need to give the kind of service that he likes. We’re slowly involving him more, there is a lot of work to do, but we do it with motivation and determination.”

The round opens on Friday night with Parma hosting Lecce in a match which could be key in the relegation battle; Atalanta will target a home win against Torino in Bergamo on Saturday afternoon;  Juventus and Fiorentina have home games against Empoli and Genoa respectively on Sunday; and the Monday round-closer sees Lazio visit strugglers Cagliari at the Unipol Domus Stadium.

Lukaku hits winner as Napoli end Juve’s unbeaten run https://www.adomonline.com/lukaku-hits-winner-as-napoli-end-juves-unbeaten-run/ Sat, 25 Jan 2025 19:58:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2497168 Romelu Lukaku scored the winner from the penalty spot as Napoli ended Juventus’ unbeaten start to the Serie A season.

Juventus, unbeaten in their first 21 league matches under new head coach Thiago Motta, took the lead through debutant Randal Kolo Muani.

League leaders Napoli equalised through Frank Anguissa, who headed in his 10th goal for the club in 140 appearances.

Napoli were awarded a penalty 20 minutes from time when Juventus defender Manuel Locatelli brought down former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

Lukaku, who saw a move to Juventus fall through in 2023, slotted his penalty past Michele di Gregorio for his ninth goal of the season.

The victory extends Napoli’s lead over second-placed Inter Milan to six points, though they have played two games more than Simone Inzaghi’s side.

Juventus’ defeat leaves the club in fifth, 16 points behind Napoli and two points behind Lazio, who occupy the final Champions League spot.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Napoli will welcome Juve to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium early on Saturday evening, with the Partenopei seeking to claim three points and keep up their push to win a second championship in the space of three seasons.

As for the Bianconeri, this season has been a struggle under manager Thiago Motta, with the team struggling to convert draws into wins. Club legend Franco Causio has urged Motta to restore a winning mentality to the team in black and white.

“You can’t buy a team’s character at the supermarket, the coach has to bring it to the group, especially if it’s a young team like Juventus,” said Causio. “Motta needs to do some soul-searching, he’s good and deserves time, but everyone makes mistakes and he still has to grow as a coach.”

One of Napoli’s Scudetto rivals, Atalanta, will be in action earlier on Saturday when they face Como at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium while reigning champions Inter Milan will be in action on Sunday afternoon when they visit Lecce at the Ettore Giardiniera Stadium.

Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi recently praised his team for their efforts in the Italian Super Cup, and believes they will set a fearsome pace in Serie A until the end of the campaign: “I feel great pride,” he exclaimed.

“These guys are giving me everything they can over the last three and a half years. With all the matches we have to play, it’s commendable. We have to keep going like this.”

Other matches to watch in this round include AC Milan at home to Parma and a potential thriller between Lazio and Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Sunday night, while Monday night offers up a double delight, as Venezia and Genoa host Verona and Monza respectively – in clashes which will have a huge effect on the relegation battle.

Napoli extend lead with statement win over Atalanta https://www.adomonline.com/napoli-extend-lead-with-statement-win-over-atalanta/ Sat, 18 Jan 2025 15:36:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494509 Napoli registered a sixth consecutive Serie A victory as they secured a 3-2 victory over Scudetto rival Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium, opening up a seven-point gap over La Dea in the process.

A recent drop in form had recently seen Atalanta draw three Serie A games in a row to drop down to third after leading the way at Christmas, but the visit of Napoli gave them an opportunity to cut the gap to the league-leaders.

They looked well-placed to do just that, when the division’s top scorer Mateo Retegui netted his 14th goal of the season courtesy of a fantastic strike into the roof of the net from an angle.

In response, David Neres had a shot saved before the visitors levelled things up shortly before the half-hour mark.

From a similar position, Matteo Politano hammered past Marco Carnesecchi with a fierce strike, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

With the momentum now on their side, Antonio Conte’s men were soon in front thanks to another clinical finish, this time from Scott McTominay, who side-footed Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s cutback into the top corner from just inside the area.

A quiet start to the second period ensued until Atalanta’s talisman Lookman produced a moment of quality.

Politano had appeared to have prevented any danger, but the Nigeria international adjusted himself to bury into the corner to restore parity once more.

La Dea subsequently went close to going in front, with only a fingertip save from Alex Meret stopping Charles de Ketelaere’s header from nestling in the bottom corner.

Atalanta looked the more likely to find a winner, but the next goal came at the other end as Romelu Lukaku, otherwise quiet, headed Anguissa’s pinpoint cross into the corner.

In true Conte fashion, his side ran down the clock with confidence to prevail and move six points clear at the top.

Inter Milan do have two games in hand to catch them, but their 2-2 draw against Bologna in midweek suggests picking up six points from six is no guarantee.

Atalanta, meanwhile, are now seven points adrift of the Partenopei, and will need to break their current five-game winless run quickly if they want to stay in contention for a maiden Serie A title.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Juventus and Milan will clash at the Allianz Stadium in Turin early on the evening of Saturday 18 January – a meeting of two heavyweights who are under pressure due to failing to live up to expectations this season.

Perhaps that pressure will force a better game, with the teams having played out a tepid 0-0 draw when they last met in Serie A back in November. In fact, the last four league matches between the Bianconeri and the Rossoneri have produced just two goals.

“It will be fundamental for us to put in a balanced performance at a high intensity, whilst maintaining our concentration throughout,” said Juve manager Thiago Motta, who has seen his side draw far too many matches this season. “I don’t think possession is the only key to winning. Many other things count, like intensity and balance.”

Once the Juve-Milan match is over, attention immediately turns to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, where Napoli host Atalanta in a meeting of two teams which not only play attacking and dynamic football, but represent the two most credible threats to Inter Milan’s hopes of retaining the Scudetto.

Atalanta have had Napoli’s number in recent times, recording successive 3-0 wins over the Neapolitans through 2024, but Antonio Conte (manager of the former team) has insisted that his hunger for victory could turn the tide.

“Even when I play cards with my daughter, I want to win,” said the former Chelsea, Juventus and Italian national team boss. “I would never sign on for minimum goals. Personally, I always aim for the maximum.

“The squad is improving and works, game after game. We need to avoid injuries, the players and the fans are getting a lot of satisfaction. I am pleased, because the team is improving, but if we can score a few more goals, then we would all be more relaxed and avoid a few heart attacks.”

Champions Inter Milan will have their chance to reply when they welcome Empoli to the San Siro on Sunday night, while the round also features Roma at home to Genoa on Friday, Lazio visiting Verona on Sunday, and a Monday night battle at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium between Como and Udinese.

Serie A preview: Torino host Juventus as Napoli tackle Verona https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-preview-torino-host-juventus-as-napoli-tackle-verona/ Fri, 10 Jan 2025 09:49:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491549 The latest edition of the ‘Derby della Mole’ – the Turin Derby – between Torino and Juventus will headline Matchday 20 of the 2024-25 Serie A season.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Torino and Juve will meet at the Grande Olimpico Stadium in Turin on the early evening of Saturday 11 January. The Bianconeri will be chasing a league ‘double’ over their local rivals after a 2-0 home triumph in November courtesy of goals from Timothy Weah and Kenan Yildiz. In fact, Il Toro have not won a match in the Turin derby since April 2015 – the better part of a decade ago!

Yet Juventus come into the match having endured a frustrating season, with manager Thiago Motta struggling to get his team playing consistently, and with the kind of attacking creativity and bite that made his Bologna team of last season so impressive.

“We must be united and keep going forward for the good of Juventus,” said Motta. “We all want to change this situation. The fans have every right to express themselves, but we should remain united and together change things.”

Lazio have enjoyed a far better campaign than they would have hoped for, and will get the round underway on Friday night when they welcome Como to the Olimpico Stadium in Rome – with club president Claudio Lotito recently praising manager Marco Baroni for the impact he has had.

“When I chose him [Baroni] I did it with conviction, certainly not to relegate Lazio. This summer there were protests against me, but I did this restructuring to start again and I was convinced that Baroni could be the right person,” said Lotito.

“This turnover is an automatic fact, when you have a highly competitive squad it is right that the most ready and most functional people for the opponents play. We must not chase names, those are part of history. We must think about the future, Lazio must become a point of arrival and not of departure.”

The round will also feature Atalanta away to Udinese; AC Milan welcoming Cagliari to the iconic San Siro; Inter Milan face a potential banana skin away to Venezia; Napoli will back themselves to beat Verona at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium; and Fiorentina will close out the round on Monday night away to Monza.

Serie A: Lazio clash with Atalanta as Roma travel to AC Milan https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-lazio-clash-with-atalanta-as-roma-travel-to-ac-milan/ Sat, 28 Dec 2024 15:10:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488372 The final Serie A matchday of the year 2024 features a potential thriller between Scudetto ‘dark horses’ Lazio and Atalanta, as well as a heavyweight bout between AC Milan and Roma.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Lazio and Atalanta will meet at the Stadio Olimpico in the late kick-off on Saturday 28 December, with the two teams looking to keep up the form which has seen them emerge as contenders for top domestic honours this season.

La Dea have been particularly impressive, with manager Gian Piero Gasperini happy to let supporters enjoy the form they have displayed in the 2024-25 campaign.

“The people of Bergamo have their feet firmly on the ground, so don’t take anything for granted,” said the Atalanta boss. “If we were still up there after another 20 games, it’d be different, but as things stand it is an expression of joy and a deserved one too.”

He added, “It is a very different Atalanta. I remain fond of all my teams, from the first of which there is only one player left – [Rafael] Toloi – to this version. The results have been remarkable, but I am not the person to put these teams in any kind of order.”

Saturday also features champions Inter Milan away to Cagliari at the Unipol Domus Stadium, while Sunday boasts Napoli at home to Venezia, Juventus tackling Fiorentina in Turin, and a potential thriller between AC Milan and Roma at the iconic San Siro Stadium.

The Rossoneri have yet to really settle under the leadership of manager Paulo Fonseca, while the Giallorossi are delighted to have veteran Claudio Ranieri at the helm in the wake of the brief and unpopular reign of Ivan Juric.

“There is a long road ahead of us now, we’ve done nothing yet, but we are on the right track,” said Roma’s Stephan El Shaarawy. “I saw improvements and positive aspects from the very first game under the new coach. We have to keep focusing on the positives and keep getting stronger.”

The round closes on Monday with two games which could affect the relegation scrap at the bottom of the log, as Como and Bologna host Lecce and Verona respectively.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

The round opens on Friday night at the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium, where Verona will host AC Milan. While the Rossoneri are not considered Scudetto contenders, coach Paulo Fonseca is pleased to see his team’s progress – albeit under constant scrutiny and pressure.

“It seems to me that we improve in something, then other problems arise,” the Portuguese explained. “But it’s not because you win that you have to think everything is fine by closing your eyes to the problems. I can’t close my eyes, we talked about the problems. It’s important to work on the problem. When we work on the problem we had in the game the team has a positive response.”

Saturday’s top matches see Genoa host title hopefuls Napoli at the Comunale Luigi Ferraris Stadium in the early evening, before Scudetto dark horses Lazio will play away to Lecce at the Ettore Giardiniero Stadium.

Patrick Vieira, who took charge of Genoa last month, is hopeful that his team will continue to progress – even when faced with the challenge of one of the top teams in the league.

“What we are working on will take time, but of course it is also important to keep collecting points even as we grow as a team,” said the French football legend. “We will face many challenges, but it is important that we remain together as a unit, and have the faith and backing of our supporters.”

Sunday is headlined by Atalanta welcoming Empoli to Bergamo, before Juventus chase an away win over Monza, while Monday features high-flying Fiorentina at home to Udinese and Scudetto holders Inter Milan welcoming Como to the San Siro.

Atalanta have produced some sensational football this season, with manager Gian Piero Gasperini crediting the players – especially star performers, such as Nigerian Ademola Lookman – for laying the foundation of their current growth.

“We are in a good period of form in Italy and Europe. I’m happy with the performances and results we are getting,” Gasperini explained. “Winning the Europa League last season helped us grow in confidence and self belief. Many new players have arrived and are improving, but it was last season’s success, driven by players like Lookman, that set the tone.”

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Lazio and Inter will clash at the Stadio Olimpico on the evening of Monday 16 December, with Le Aquile looking to demonstrate that the form they have shown this season has not been a fluke, but rather an expression of the hard work put in by manager Marco Baroni and his players.

One of those is Senegalese international Boulaye Dia, whose versatility and athleticism in attack has helped drive the Rome-based team forward.

“We all know how great Lazio is, it’s an important step for any player. Here, we play against the best teams. Scoring lots of goals is what counts, a striker is judged by this factor,” said Dia. “We have to do our best without thinking about those who were here before us.”

The weekend’s action opens on Friday night with Empoli hosting Torino, while Saturday is headlined by Napoli visiting Udinese and Juventus hosting Venezia – with both heavyweights chasing key points in what is becoming a thrilling title race.

“We must not look at the standings, or at other clubs, but at ourselves,” said Partenopei manager Antonio Conte. “We have to improve in what we are working on. We have to take steps to raise our level.”

As for the Bianconeri, American international Timothy Weah – the son of Liberian legend George Weah – has added great value to their attack, according to manager Thiago Motta.

“I like all he does. Especially the fact that he scores goals. Strikers need to finish an attack. He does many other things well, and it’s very interesting because he offers alternative solutions,” said the Juve boss.

“He can play on the left, on the right, or as a striker. He helps, and he’s responsible. He understands what the team needs and his duties. We are happy he’s in good form, he must continue like this, whether he starts or not.”

Sunday features Fiorentina away to Bologna, Roma visiting beautiful Como, and AC Milan chasing three points when they welcome Genoa to the iconic San Siro.

Serie A preview: Inter Milan host Parma as Lazio head to Napoli https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-preview-inter-milan-host-parma-as-lazio-head-to-napoli/ Fri, 06 Dec 2024 07:47:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2480031 Juventus manager Thiago Motta will come up against his former club Bologna, while Atalanta v AC Milan and Napoli v Lazio promise to be thrillers in Matchday 15 of the 2024-25 Serie A season.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Motta has made some impressive strides in his first season in charge of the Bianconeri, but facing the Rossoblu – the team where he made his name and ultimately earned a shot at the big job in Turin – will surely be an emotionally-taxing day for the Italian-Brazilian tactician.

The good news for Juve ahead of hosting Bologna on the evening of Saturday 7 December is that they are unbeaten against their opponents in 26 matches across all competitions – a streak which stretches back as far as 2011.

The round opens on Friday evening with the Milanese clubs in action: champions Inter Milan will first welcome Parma to the San Siro, before AC Milan face a tough test in Bergamo against Atalanta. La Dea are enjoying another fine campaign under manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who recently praised the freedom with which his team expresses itself.

“We don’t have too many thoughts rattling around our minds. We do play a bit like kids, with a sense of freedom,” said the veteran tactician. “I don’t know what the future holds, but we are very satisfied with what we are doing and try to keep going as long as possible.

“Football has certain rules, you learn to win, but above all how to lose, how to respect your opponents. Sport, and in particular football, teaches you lessons that you carry for the rest of your life, in all areas of that life.”

The pick of matches on Sunday 8 December comes from the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, where title hopefuls Napoli will welcome a dangerous Lazio. Le Aquile manager Marco Baroni has done a fine job since taking the reins at the Roman club, though he admits that he owes a debt to rising stars such as Senegalese forward Boulaye Dia.

“Boulaye is a player I admire for his mobility and his understanding of his role on a tactical level. So, if Dia is in shape, he will take to the pitch,” explained Baroni.

Other matches to watch in this round include Roma at home to Lecce on Saturday night, Fiorentina hosting Cagliari on Sunday afternoon and a Monday night battle between Monza and Udinese.
