The 66-year-old has a contract until the end of the current season as Juventus look to rescue things after a poor start to the campaign under Tudor. 

In a statement on Juventus’ official website, the club wrote: “Luciano Spalletti is the new head coach of Juventus, signing an agreement with the club until June 30, 2026.

“Born in Certaldo, in the province of Florence, in 1959, Spalletti began his coaching career 30 years ago after playing for Spezia and Empoli, among others. He began his coaching career at the Tuscan club, winning the Serie C Coppa Italia before leading the club to Serie A promotion, establishing himself as one of the most innovative coaches in Italy.”

Tudor spent the majority of his playing career at Juventus, and was appointed in March earlier this year as manager. He won just 10 of his 24 games in charge in Turin. The side currently sit in seventh place in the table after nine Serie A matches, with 15 points.

However, they have not won a single UEFA Champions League match so far this season, and are 25th in the table with two points, just outside the play-off places, after losing to Real Madrid last week.

Spalletti won the Serie A title with Napoli in 2023, with the Italian then claiming he would not manage another team in Italy. He has, however, chosen to return to domestic football in his home country after a difficult spell with the national side.

He left that role in the summer after coming under pressure following a disappointing failure to retain the European Championship title at Euro 2024, and then losing to Norway 3-0 in the first qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup.

Juventus struggled last season after appointing Thiago Motta to replace Massimiliano Allegri, before he was replaced by Tudor.

Spalletti’s first match in charge of his new side will be against Serie A newboys Cremonese, who have impressed this season.

The side, who signed Jamie Vardy on a free transfer after he departed Leicester City at the end of last term, are one point behind Juventus, in eighth place.

Spalletti enjoyed a successful spell at Roma, winning the Coppa Italia twice, first in the 2006/7 and then the following season. He moved to Zenit St Petersburg, winning the Russian Premier League in 2010 and then the 2011/12 campaign, as well as winning the 2009/10 Russian Cup and the next season’s Russian Super Cup.

In a managerial career that began in 1993 with Empoli, he has coached a host of other notable Italian sides, including Internazionale and Udinese.

Juventus have won Serie A 36 times, but their latest league title came in 2019/20, and the last honour they won was the 2023/24 Coppa Italia.

David Neres’ free-kick into the box was headed home by Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa from close range in the 69th minute as Antonio Conte’s side took the lead.

Leece had a chance to open the scoring after 57 minutes when Francesco Camarda stepped up from the spot but his penalty was well saved by Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

The Serb has saved five of the past nine penalties he has faced in Serie A.

The result means Napoli move three points ahead of second-placed Roma having played a game more.

It was Napoli’s first game since Kevin de Bruyne suffered a significant thigh injury which will rule him out for a lengthy period.

The league headers host Como in their next league fixture on Saturday (17:00 GMT).

The Croatian joined the Italian club in March as Thiago Motta’s replacement.

But the 43-year-old has overseen an eight-match winless run, which has left the club eighth in the Serie A table.

Defeat against Lazio on Sunday was the side’s third consecutive loss in all competitions.

“The club thanks Igor Tudor and his entire staff for their professionalism and dedication over the past few months and wishes them all the best for their future careers,” a Juventus statement read.

Juventus added that Massimiliano Brambilla will take charge of the side for their Serie A fixture against Udinese on Wednesday (17:30 GMT).

The Old Lady are six points behind leaders Napoli, and have failed to win in their last five league matches.

Juventus are 25th in the Champions League group stage table, having lost once and drawn twice in their opening three matches.

La Liga clubs Villarreal and Barcelona are now set to face each other in Miami in December in what would be the first European league fixture to be played abroad.

Then in February, AC Milan’s Italian Serie A match against Como will be played in Perth, Australia.

Uefa, European football’s governing body, has stressed its “clear opposition” to the plans, but “reluctantly” approved them because there is no legal framework to stop it.

“League matches should be played on home soil; anything else would disenfranchise loyal match-going fans and potentially introduce distortive elements in competitions,” said Ceferin.

“Our consultation confirmed the breadth of these concerns. I would like to thank the 55 national associations for their constructive and responsible engagement on such a sensitive issue.

“While it is regrettable to have to let these two games go ahead, this decision is exceptional and shall not be seen as setting a precedent. Our commitment is clear: to protect the integrity of national leagues and ensure that football remains anchored in its home environment.”

Fans’ group Football Supporters Europe (FSE) says the decision to play the two games abroad could inflict “long-lasting harm” on the sport, and wants tougher rules to prevent it happening again in the future.

“FSE will continue to stand firmly with fans in Spain and Italy in resisting these damaging proposals,” it said.

“Together with our members in these countries, we are looking into every possible option to counter these plans.

“By forcing through these matches, La Liga and Serie A risk undermining their own history and long-term success while inflicting long-lasting harm to football in Europe – and beyond.

“Now is the time for a solid regulatory framework that protects domestic competition.”

Uefa says it consulted stakeholders and found “widespread lack of support” for league matches to be played abroad, echoing concerns raised by fans, other leagues, clubs, players and European institutions.

But it said world governing body Fifa’s regulatory framework is “not clear and detailed enough” for it to block the plans.

Fifa set up a working group last year to look at the impact of playing competitive domestic matches overseas.

Last year, La Liga said it wanted to hold Barcelona v Atletico Madrid in Miami before dropping the idea because of time constraints.

In 2019, Barcelona also planned to stage a league match against Girona in Miami, but the idea was scrapped after opposition from Spain’s football association and its players’ union.

Other one-off matches, such as the Italian Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup, have been held abroad in recent years.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in August there are no plans to play an English top-flight match abroad.

The idea of the Premier League playing an extra round outside England – the so-called ’39th game’ – was raised in 2008 but shelved after criticism from fans and media.

A sale of the two Milan clubs’ home was approved after a lengthy overnight vote, with debates taking place for almost 12 hours.

The approval could lead to the 99-year-old ground and its surrounding areas being sold to both clubs for 197m euros (£172m), but it still needs to be officially confirmed by the city government.

The clubs said it is “a historic and decisive step for the future of the clubs and the city”.

The San Siro has been AC Milan’s stadium since 1926, but it has not been modernised since the 1990 World Cup.

They share the ground with city rivals Inter as joint tenants and repeated attempts to modernise it have failed.

The clubs plan to build a new 71,500-capacity ground as part of a large urban regeneration project, with there reportedly being aims for it to be ready in time Euro 2032, which Italy are joint hosts of alongside Turkey.

Last week, the clubs appointed architectural firms to design a new ground.

“The clubs look ahead with confidence and responsibility to the next steps of the process that will lead to the creation of a new stadium meeting the highest international standards – a world-class facility destined to become a new architectural icon for Milan and a symbol of the passion of football fans around the world,” a joint statement from the clubs said.

The deal is reportedly worth up to £6 million, including add-ons, with Lamptey expected to travel to Italy this weekend to finalise the move.

Lamptey is likely to serve as a backup to Brazilian defender Dodo as Fiorentina begins their new season.

Last term, the 22-year-old’s campaign at Brighton was disrupted by recurring injuries, restricting him to just 15 appearances. Despite these setbacks, he contributed two goals and several assists.

The Ghana international did not feature in Brighton’s opening three matches of the current season against Fulham, Everton, and Oxford United.

Since joining the Seagulls from Chelsea, Lamptey has made 104 appearances, scoring three goals, and has established himself as a versatile option on the flank.

In international news, Lamptey has been named in Ghana’s squad for Matchday 7 and 8 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali next month.

The 23-year-old winger moves from English Championship side Southampton, signing a four-year contract with an option to extend for an additional year.

The deal is reportedly worth €17.5 million, with potential add-ons reaching €4 million.

Sulemana reunites with his former Southampton coach, Ivan Jurić, who now leads Atalanta.

The former FC Nordsjaelland attacker has earned 44 caps for Ghana and featured in 26 matches last season, scoring once.

Since joining Southampton from French club Stade Rennais in January 2023, Sulemana made 34 appearances across all competitions, netting five goals and providing two assists.

He will also be teaming up again with Ghanaian national teammate Ibrahim Sulemana at Atalanta.

After a challenging period at Southampton, Kamaldeen Sulemana aims to make an immediate impact as he prepares for the 2025/26 season with his new club.

Gasperini, who guided Atalanta to third in Italy’s Serie A and qualification for the Champions League this season, replaces Claudio Ranieri.

The ex-Leicester City and Chelsea boss stepped down as manager after leading Roma to fifth in Serie A and a Europa League spot.

Ranieri came out of retirement last November to take over as Roma boss following the sacking of Ivan Juric, and the 73-year-old has now taken on an executive role at the club.

Gasperini, 67, spent nine years in charge of Atalanta and won the Europa League with them in 2023-24 when they beat Bayer Leverkusen in the final.

“Gasperini’s career is defined by its creative tactics, dedication to hard work, and exceptional player development,” Roma said.

“Both ownership and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission.”

With second-placed Inter Milan leading 2-0 at Como, Napoli had to win to finish top of Serie A, with their supporters creating a sensational atmosphere at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

After the hosts dominated the opening stages, McTominay, who joined Napoli from Manchester United in a £25.7m move in August, made the breakthrough when he acrobatically connected with Matteo Politano’s right-wing cross.

Napoli knew a victory would see them become Italian champions for the second time in three seasons and Romelu Lukaku sealed it as he showed great strength and pace to hold off a challenge from Michel Adopo and slot the ball past Alen Sherri for the hosts’ second.

That goal sparked great scenes of celebration with the Napoli substitutes and coaching staff running on to the pitch, while Lukaku received a yellow card for taking his shirt off.

The rest of the match was played in a party mood as Napoli celebrated becoming Italian champions again having done so in 1986-87, 1989-90 and 2022-23, before the trophy presentation.

McTominay scored 12 goals and contributed four assists throughout the campaign, with him named Serie A Player of the Season shortly after the conclusion of the game.

Napoli, looking to win a second Scudetto in the space of two seasons, will host Cagliari at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and chase a victory to ensure that they finish at the top of the table.

“Nothing has changed, and we have to win,” said Napoli manager Antonio Conte, who has overseen their extraordinary push for glory. “The lads have been very good, driven by an extraordinary environment.”

Inter Milan, who are clinging onto hopes of defending their title, will be away to Como at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium. Ordinarily, such a match-up would see the Nerazzurri tipped as heavy favourites, but the Lariani have enjoyed some fantastic form in these final weeks of the season and could be a major stumbling block for the men from Milan.

“For the project to keep moving forward, the primary objective was to stay in the division,” Como’s Sergi Roberto explained. “They needed players used to competing at the top level and who could help the team a lot. At the start of the season especially, we lacked a bit of experience of Serie A. We dominated games but didn’t close out results.

“But we’re delighted that so many people want to see the team. The location is incredible, the lake is so beautiful. If they enjoy the game, see good football, then everything is perfect.”

The final round of matches will also be decisive in terms of European qualification, with Roma, Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina all jostling for a potential spot in the UEFA Champions League next season.

The pressure will be highest on Juventus for their clash away to Venezia (who are scrapping to avoid relegation), while Roma are away to Torino, Lazio host Lecce, and Fiorentina head to the Friuli Stadium for a clash with Udinese.

“Every team fights for something,” said Juve manager Igor Tudor, whose hopes of staying in the job beyond his caretaker role will be zero if he cannot secure Champions League football. “We will do everything we can to finish as high on the standings as possible.”

Reigning champions Inter Milan, meanwhile, will welcome Lazio to the San Siro. This is always a tough clash for Nerazzurri manager Simone Inzaghi, as not only are Lazio routinely tough opponents, he also has a special connection to the Rome club, as he was both a successful player and manager for Le Aquile.

“For me, matches against Lazio will never be the same as any others,” said Inzaghi. “I don’t forget my journey there. The trophies won, first on the pitch and then on the bench. […] I was lucky enough to have been at Lazio. Now, I just think about Inter.”

Napoli’s hopes of winning a second Scudetto in the space of three seasons will depend on them being able to overcome the Rossoblu, as manager Antonio Conte continues to drive his team toward what would be an amazing title triumph.

Inter Milan will look to take advantage of any slip ups from their championship rivals, and they will hope that hosts Torino – who have little to play for in the remainder of the season, as they will neither be relegated, nor qualify for Europe – do not prove antagonistic in the quest for three points.

“We have to be stronger than our fatigue,” said Nerazzurri manager Simone Inzaghi, whose side has gone deep in every competition they have played in this season. “This will be about our mentality, our desire, our hunger for success.”

Elsewhere in this round, Atalanta and Roma will have a potential thriller when they meet at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo. While La Dea are on course to finish in the Champions League places, the Giallorossi are competing hard to secure European football for next term.

“We’re in it, we want to do well and we want our fans to be proud of how we finish the season. Napoli will have the first chance to land a blow in the title race, as they face Lecce at the Ettore Giardiniero Stadium early on Saturday evening. The Partenopei are strong favourites, but would do well not to underestimate I Lupi, who are fighting for survival in Italy’s top flight.

“Beyond everything else, we will have the opportunity to get closer to a prestigious goal that could not be foreseen at the beginning of the year,” said Napoli manager Antonio Conte.

“The credit goes to the players, who work hard and sacrifice themselves together,” said Inter manager Simone Inzaghi.

“We’ve been together for four years. At the start, we knew we had a strong team but also that we needed to fix some things. We’ve managed to win important trophies. It’s a huge satisfaction that rewards the work of myself and the staff.”

This round of Serie A action will also feature Roma hosting Fiorentina at the Olimpico Stadium early on Sunday evening. Both teams are chasing European qualification, making this a key six-pointer, and the Giallorossi will have a little extra motivation on their side, as they seek to avenge a 1-5 thrashing suffered at the hands of La Viola back in October 2024.

“Would you bet a Euro on us qualifying for the Champions League? You want to lose it? Let’s be honest. If we make it to the Champions League, it’s because the others collapse and we pull off a masterpiece,” said Roma manager Claudio Ranieri.

Also on offer is a clash between Torino and Venezia on Friday night, Lazio and Atalanta visiting Empoli and Monza respectively on Sunday, and a round-closing Monday night clash between Genoa and AC Milan at the Comunale Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church and a lifelong football fan has died, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday. He was 88.

“Following the passing of His Holiness, Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A can confirm that today’s league games in Serie A and Primavera 1 have been postponed,” the league said in a statement.

Torino were set to host Udinese, Cagliari were due to face off against Fiorentina, while Lazio — fresh from their Europa League quarterfinal disappointment in midweek — were meant to travel to Genoa, and Parma were scheduled to play Juventus.

The fixtures have been rescheduled for Wednesday, with the Coppa Italia semifinal second leg between Inter Milan and AC Milan kicking off as originally scheduled.

A minute’s silence will be observed before all sports events this week, the Italian Olympic Committee said.

Serie A’s reigning champions and current league leaders Inter Milan paid tribute to Francis in a post on X which described him as “a man of faith, humility and dialogue who was able to speak to everyone’s heart.”

Roma described Francis’ death as “a loss that deeply saddens our city and the entire world,” in a post.

“His faith, his humility, his courage and his dedication have touched the hearts of millions of people, making him a moral reference of our time.”

From meetings with Diego Maradona to the passion for his beloved Buenos Aires club, San Lorenzo, Francis was an avid football fan. And a promoter of sports in general.

Francis’ passion for football became known almost immediately after he was elected pope in 2013 when Argentine club San Lorenzo posted a photo of him holding up the club’s crest.

San Lorenzo, one of the oldest teams in the Argentine Football Association, performed well after Francis was elected as the 266th pope in March 2013. The team won the title in 2013 and then claimed the Copa Libertadores for the first time a year later.

Club officials traveled twice to the Vatican carrying trophies to thank Francis for his support. A planned new San Lorenzo stadium is set to be named after him.

Francis met his fellow Argentine Maradona twice as pope. There was a special audience in connection with a charity football match in 2014 when Maradona presented the pontiff with a football shirt, emblazoned with the name “Francisco” — Spanish for Francis — and Maradona’s iconic No. 10.

“I think we all now realize he’s a [star],” Maradona said after another meeting in 2015. “I’m Francis’ top fan.”

When Maradona died in 2020, Francis remembered the football legend in his prayers.

“Francis was a special Pope, able to illuminate in his time like only the greatest can,” former Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon said in a post on Instagram. “He showed us the way with great courage and moved our souls. I will carry his example forever in my heart.”

The heated rivalry between capital city clubs Lazio and Roma will have another chapter written into its history when the teams clash at the Olimpico Stadium on the evening of Sunday 13 April – with both teams fighting to secure some form of European qualification for next season.

Roma emerged as 2-0 winners over Lazio when the teams last met (in early January), and manager Claudio Ranieri will be determined to lead the Gialorossi to a league ‘double’ over Le Aquile.

“They always call me in problematic situations so I put on my helmet and start working, trying to instil serenity and desire to do,” said Ranieri, who was parachuted in earlier this season to rescue Roma after a poor start.

“It seemed logical to put world champions in the team… I tried to restore confidence and self-esteem, the quality of this team is very high but it needs to be sprinkled with the desire to get the win.”

Reigning champions Inter Milan will look to boost their hopes of back-to-back Scudettos when they welcome Cagliari to the San Siro on Saturday, while title rivals Atalanta and Napoli will be in action against Bologna and Empoli on Sunday and Monday respectively.

Nerazzurri manager Simone Inzaghi is balancing a demanding schedule, as his team tackles this clash in between the two legs of a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie against Bayern Munich.

“The key is sacrificing together,” said Inzaghi. “We’ll enjoy the view from the top but focus on recharging our physical and mental energy.”

Partenopei boss Antonio Conte, meanwhile, is urging his team to keep up their fight for the title right until the end of the campaign: “To us it changes nothing, we have to look at ourselves and give everything. “We have to be very careful,” said Conte. “Scoring one more goal than the opposition is my preferred approach, but we always work on balance between both phases. It happens, you can go on a run of clean sheets or concede regularly. What matters is consistency in results.”

The weekend also sees Fiorentina and Juventus renew their rivalry. La Viola have often felt ‘bullied’ by Juve, who have routinely bought the Florence side’s best players down the years. The teams played out a cracking 2-2 draw in December last year, with former Juve striker Moise Kean scoring a late equaliser for the team in purple.

Both teams had chances to break the deadlock early on, but it was Mateo Retegui who put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot following a handball by Weston McKennie just before the half-hour mark.

Marten de Roon pounced on a rebound off Juve defender Lloyd Kelly to fire the ball into an open net early in the second half, before Davide Zappacosta made it 3-0, scoring from close-range after a brilliant back-heel pass from Sead Kolasinac in the 66th minute.

Ademola Lookman sealed the rout as he netted 13 minutes from time after his shot took a deflection off a Juventus defender before beating goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side sit third with 58 points, three behind leaders Inter Milan, while Juventus remain fourth on 52 points.

Atalanta and Juve have both been just off the pace set by Napoli and Inter Milan at the top of the standings, but this clash at the Allianz Stadium will nonetheless be crucial in deciding which teams represent Italy in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The Bianconeri and La Dea have played to draws in five of their last seven meetings across all competitions, with Juve manager Thiago Motta left frustrated by the teams’ 1-1 stalemate when they met as recently as January.

“You need to have cool heads and know how to navigate the ship and how to react in different situations. What we need to do now is see the harbour and get there safe and sound, and possibly arrive with what we deserve to achieve,” said Conte.

“But the important thing is to get to the port, safe and sound. Once you get there, you just have to take a breath and understand what happened during the trip. As a captain, I have to give the right directions, both in the storm and in calm seas. Because even when the sea is calm, you have to be careful. A captain has to count on the crew, in this case it’s the players, who are exceptional.”

Federico Dimarco put defending champions Inter ahead in the 22nd minute with a superb free kick to silence the capacity crowd but Danish midfielder Billing was the hero of Naples, coming off the bench to equalise in the 87th minute.

Inter have 58 points with Napoli on 57, two ahead of Atalanta who were held to a 0-0 draw by Venezia on Saturday.

After a nervy, scrappy start from both sides at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, with the game repeatedly interrupted as players received treatment, it was only fitting that the opening goal came from a set-piece.

Dimarco curled his free kick around the wall and inside the far post. Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret could only look on as the ball nestled in the corner of the net and the game finally erupted into life.

Once Napoli absorbed the sucker-punch, they began to push forward in search of an equaliser. A long pass was met first time by striker Romelu Lukaku but his effort smashed into the side netting.

Seconds later Giacomo Raspadori’s first touch took him past Inter keeper Josep Martinez wide in the area but his second was too heavy and the ball rolled wide with Lukaku waiting in the middle of the area.

Just before the break Raspadori managed to get the ball into a dangerous position but Lukaku’s strike from the edge of the six-yard box was blocked by Alessandro Bastoni and Inter held their lead going into the interval.

Napoli were camped out in the Inter area for much of the second half, forcing corner after corner. Stanislav Lobotka fired over from the edge of the area after a one-two with Lukaku.

Scott McTominay then had a powerful strike parried away by Martinez, while an Inter counter-attack needed Meret to come well out of his area and clear the danger with Denzel Dumfries bearing down on the Napoli goal.

Napoli were looking to put a dismal February behind them where a run of three draws and one defeat had allowed Inter to steal top spot, but they looked set to slip further behind until manager Antonio Conte sprang Billing from the bench.

The Dane, signed on loan from Bournemouth in January, made his Napoli debut in last weekend’s defeat at Como but needed just eight minutes to make his mark against Inter.

Played in by Lobotka, Billing’s first effort was saved by the leg of Martinez but he poked home the rebound to keep Napoli’s title hopes very much alive.

A positive update has been made on the player’s progress. “ACF Fiorentina announces that Moise Kean was discharged from the Verona hospital during the night and returned to Florence. The clinical and diagnostic tests carried out were all negative,” said the club in a statement. Hopefully, he’ll be back in action soon.

Saturday afternoon 1 March brings the clash between Atalanta and Venezia at the Gewiss Stadium.

Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman scored a brace against Empoli last time out, and it was a great response after being criticised by his manager Gian Piero Gasperini for missing a penalty in the UEFA Champions League.

Four-time CAF Player of the Year winner Samuel Eto’o heaped praise on the current holder for his courage. “The time of the match and the next. For us, you are and will always be our champion. Only he who has the courage to shoot can miss. Thank you for your courage great champion,” said Eto’o on social media.

The action continues on Sunday evening 2 March as AC Milan goes up against Lazio at the San Siro.

Another Super Eagles star, Samuel Chukwueze has faced a ton of criticism this season for his lack of goals for the Rossoneri this season and he recently shared his mom still wants him to study.

“My mom did not want me to play football. In Africa, everyone focuses on school, and she used to say football will never make you money,” Chukwueze said.

Inter will host Genoa at the San Siro on Saturday night, with Nerazzurri manager Simone Inzaghi wary of the threat posed by their opponents – after the teams played out a 2-2 draw when they last met in August of 2024.

“This is a team that fought back to make a draw against us,” said Inzaghi, referencing a late equaliser from Junior Messias. “We cannot afford to underestimate anyone. It is this time of the season when mistakes can be costly, and we need to make sure we are applying pressure to our rivals.”

The hosts are fighting to ensure their top-flight survival, with manager Cesc Fabregas hoping that former Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli can add some creativity and penetration in attack.

Elsewhere, AC Milan will face a tricky test away to Torino, with Rossoneri manager Sergio Conceicao hoping to see a more aggressive approach from his team when it comes to winning back possession.

“The aggression that I want without the ball is achieved through training, I haven’t had time to do it,” admitted the Portuguese. “Their characteristics aren’t even these, we had to understand the right area to press and then restart strong. There were moments that I liked and others not so much.”

Also keep an eye out for Lazio’s trip to Venezia; Atalanta and Juventus will back themselves to win away to Empoli and Caglirai respectively; and Roma will be in action on Monday night when they host Monza at the Olimpico Stadium.

After leaders Napoli were held to a 2-2 draw at Lazio on Saturday, victory would have left Simone Inzaghi’s Inter side first at the end of a matchday for the first time since September.

But Francisco Conceicao’s 74th-minute finish proved decisive in Turin to leave Inter two points behind 2022-23 champions Napoli.

Atalanta are three points further back in third after their goalless draw against Cagliari, while Juventus climbed back into the top four on goal difference from Lazio.

While it was only Inter’s third defeat of the campaign, it was their second loss in three games – and they have won just once in four.

Conceicao settled a close encounter after Randal Kolo Muani turned brilliantly inside the penalty area with quick feet to trick a couple of defenders, before rolling the ball into the path of his team-mate to slam home.

That came shortly after Juventus goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio had pushed Marcus Thuram’s first-time shot on to the post to keep the score level.

Denzel Dumfries also produced a superb goalline clearance from Teun Koopmeiners’ shot to keep Inter in contention, but Inzaghi’s title chasers were unable to salvage a point despite their pressure in the closing stages.

It was a third consecutive league win for Juventus, who have still only lost once in 25 league games this season.

They will now turn their attention to progressing in the Champions League on Wednesday, having won the first leg of their knockout phase play-off against PSV Eindhoven 2-1.

Juventus and Inter will do battle at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, with the Bianconeri looking to boost their hopes of a top-four finish and a guaranteed place in the UEFA Champions League next season, while the Nerazzurri want to keep up the pressure in the race for the Scudetto against Napoli.

Napoli’s title ambitions will face a stringent test when they take on Lazio at the Olimpico Stadium in Rome. Le Aquile have routinely gotten the better of the team from Naples in recent years – including a 1-0 win at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium earlier this season – but Partenopei manager Antonio Conte will be hungry to break that trend.

“Lazio are not a meteorite, they are doing very well,” Conte explained. “I’m not disappointed or unhappy, during this journey there are some stumbles, there will probably be others, this is the team I want to see but we need to have more quality in the final metres.”

This round of Italian top-flight action also features Atalanta hosting Cagliari in Bergamo; AC Milan will target a win at home to Verona; and Roma face a potential banana skin away to Parma, with the Crociati fighting for their survival in Serie A.

“We need to stay up, there’s nothing else to add. We’re a newly-promoted team full of young players, so avoiding relegation has to be our only target,” said Parma manager Fabio Pecchia.

Napoli have put together an amazing campaign under firebrand manager Antonio Conte, as they attempt to win a second Scudetto in the space of three seasons – albeit with a side which has a far different identity and ‘vibe’ compared to the class of 2022-23.

“Recently, they’ve been more oriented to defend and counter-attack. Inter used to press opponents, but now they defend with a low block. What they need is that desire to win the ball high up the pitch.”

The meeting of the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri at the iconic San Siro will be early on Sunday evening, with the team in red and black chasing a hat-trick of wins over their rivals this season. “It’s true he [Dovbyk] doesn’t shoot much, but we too need to give the kind of service that he likes. We’re slowly involving him more, there is a lot of work to do, but we do it with motivation and determination.”

Juventus, unbeaten in their first 21 league matches under new head coach Thiago Motta, took the lead through debutant Randal Kolo Muani.

League leaders Napoli equalised through Frank Anguissa, who headed in his 10th goal for the club in 140 appearances.

A recent drop in form had recently seen Atalanta draw three Serie A games in a row to drop down to third after leading the way at Christmas, but the visit of Napoli gave them an opportunity to cut the gap to the league-leaders.

A quiet start to the second period ensued until Atalanta’s talisman Lookman produced a moment of quality.

Politano had appeared to have prevented any danger, but the Nigeria international adjusted himself to bury into the corner to restore parity once more.

La Dea subsequently went close to going in front, with only a fingertip save from Alex Meret stopping Charles de Ketelaere’s header from nestling in the bottom corner.

Atalanta looked the more likely to find a winner, but the next goal came at the other end as Romelu Lukaku, otherwise quiet, headed Anguissa’s pinpoint cross into the corner.

In true Conte fashion, his side ran down the clock with confidence to prevail and move six points clear at the top.

Inter Milan do have two games in hand to catch them, but their 2-2 draw against Bologna in midweek suggests picking up six points from six is no guarantee.

Atalanta, meanwhile, are now seven points adrift of the Partenopei, and will need to break their current five-game winless run quickly if they want to stay in contention for a maiden Serie A title.

Juventus and Milan will clash at the Allianz Stadium in Turin early on the evening of Saturday 18 January – a meeting of two heavyweights who are under pressure due to failing to live up to expectations this season.

“Even when I play cards with my daughter, I want to win,” said the former Chelsea, Juventus and Italian national team boss. “I would never sign on for minimum goals. Personally, I always aim for the maximum.

“The squad is improving and works, game after game. We need to avoid injuries, the players and the fans are getting a lot of satisfaction. I am pleased, because the team is improving, but if we can score a few more goals, then we would all be more relaxed and avoid a few heart attacks.”

Milan will host Juve at the iconic San Siro on Saturday evening, with these teams likely to produce another cagey clash. The last six league matches between the Rossoneri and the Bianconeri have produced just six goals, including a 0-0 stalemate when they last met in April of 2024.

Juve boss Thiago Motta has made slow but steady progress at the helm of the team, with the Brazilian-Italian tactician recently explaining that a major part of his philosophy is the prioritising of performance over aesthetics.

“I want to see the performance, and it leads you to the result. I never wanted the performance for aesthetics. I blindly believe that teams that play well have a greater chance of winning,” said Motta.

His Milan counterpart, Paulo Fonseca, remains on unsteady ground. The Portuguese has not fully won over the Rossoneri fan base, and also risked upsetting key player Rafael Leao by benching him for matches prior to the international break.

“Maybe it’s strange for you not to see Rafa, but this must be normal. It’s not normal to see Leao on the bench, but it’s normal for me when I say that the team is more important, Milan is more important than a few players,” said Fonseca.

Saturday will also feature champions Inter Milan playing away to Verona in the afternoon, as well as a late kick-off between Parma and Atalanta at the Ennio Tardini Stadium.

Sunday’s action is headlined by the ‘Derby del Sole’ (derby of the sun) between Napoli and Roma at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Antonio Conte’s revolution at the Partenopei continues, though the task-master manager is always demanding more from his players.

“We have several options to squeeze the maximum out of our players’ on-field characteristics,” said Conte. “We need to show our football, our character, and not play timidly from the first whistle.”

Sunday will also see Fiorentina away to Como and Lazio at home to Bologna, while Monday’s action is headlined by a relegation six-pointer between Venezia and Lecce at the Pier Luigi Penzo Stadium.

Inter Milan will host Napoli in the late evening kick-off on Sunday 10 November, with this match lining up as the Scudetto holders hosting one of their rising challengers – with the added spice of Conte, who led the Nerazzurri to the title in 2020-21, looking to put a major dent in the ambitions of his former club.

Lookman – who this week finished 14th in the voting for the Ballon d’Or – opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a volley from close range after being teed up by Charles De Ketelaere.

He then doubled La Dea’s lead after the half-hour mark with a long-range strike from another De Ketelaere pass, after Scott McTominay had rattled the post for Napoli.

Substitute Mateo Retegui added the third in stoppage time, sweeping home from Raoul Bellanova’s cross as Gian Piero Gasperini’s men extended their winning run to five league games.

Atalanta, provisionally second on 22 points, have cut the gap to their opponents at the summit to three points.

They are one point above third-placed Inter – who have a game in hand – and Juventus in fourth.

Monza will welcome Milan to the U-Power Stadium on Saturday night, with ‘I Biancorossi’ holding strong links to the ‘Rossoneri’: they are managed by a Milan legend in the shape of Alessandro Nesta, they are owned by the Berlusconi family – Silvio Berlusconi famously owned Milan from 1986 to 2017 – and they boast forward Daniel Maldini in their squad (the son of one of Milan’s greatest ever players, Paolo Maldini, and himself a former Rossoneri).

Last season Monza managed a famous 4-2 home win over the heavyweights, and a repeat result would be very welcome in the municipality which is only 15 kilometres away from Milan.

“Leaving Milan [was] complicated, but I needed to play, to have new motivation,” said Daniel Maldini, whose form for Monza earned him a call-up to the Italy national team in October’s FIFA window. “Facing Milan will always be a special emotion; it can never be just another game. My dream has never changed: to return to Milanello one day, as a protagonist.”

Another match to watch this weekend is the early Sunday fixture pitting Napoli against Atalanta at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. The ‘Partenopei’ and ‘La Dea’ are two of the most thrilling teams in Italian football, and their meeting should be a cracker.

Napoli tried to recruit Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini as manager, before they hired Antonio Conte, with last season’s UEFA Europa League winning coach admitting that he was tempted by the offer.

“It’s evident that [Napoli president Aurelio] De Laurentiis has for many years shown appreciation for me, that is very pleasing, but I think at the end of the day I was probably in his thoughts along with many other coaches,” said Gasperini, who referred to the situation as being a man who is “married with children and meets a beautiful woman.”

Former Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku made an instant impact on his return to the San Siro, opening the scoring after five minutes as he outmuscled Strahinja Pavlovic inside the penalty area before firing into the bottom corner.

Despite a response from Milan, who tested Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret on a handful of occasions, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled the lead for the visitors minutes before half-time.

The Georgia international embarked on one of his trademark mazy runs down the left wing, chopping past several defenders before unleashing a curling drive beyond the hands of Mike Maignan.

Immediately after the restart the hosts looked to have halved the deficit through Alvaro Morata but his header was ruled out for a marginal offside.

Victory takes Antonio Conte’s side to 25 points, seven clear of Inter Milan in second.

A third defeat of the season leaves AC Milan in eighth place, 11 points off the pace.

The result changed a whopping six times as Inter took a brief lead, then fell behind thanks to two goals in six minutes from Juventus.

But that was only the starter as the hosts responded through Piotr Zielinski’s second penalty and then a stunner from Henrikh Mkhitaryan just moments apart before Denzel Dumfries finally prised a two-goal cushion.

However, the introduction of Kenan Yildiz with half an hour to go changed the game. Forming a lethal pincer attack with Francisco Conceicao on the opposite flank, the teenage Turk struck to give his side hope, then missed from point-blank range before recovering quickly to provide a well-deserved equaliser with less than ten minutes left.

Try as they might, neither side could find a winning goal meaning Napoli may be the biggest beneficiaries of the eight-goal classic – apart from neutral fans – as they open up four and five point gaps to Inter and Juventus at the top of Serie A.

Roma have won just one of their last 15 matches against Inter across all competitions, as the team in black and blue have regularly represented a major stumbling block for the ‘Giallorossi’. However, under manager Ivan Juric – who replaced club icon Daniele De Rossi last month – Roma are hoping that they can find an edge against the ‘Nerazzurri’ at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday night.

“It’ll be a really tough game. They’re delivering brilliant performances and have a lot of points on the board. They’re scoring all sorts of goals and are showing impressive physicality,” said Juric.

“[But] I saw a very aggressive Roma and it seemed to me that the players were capable of that. We need to pick up from there because, more than physical strength or running, believe me, it’s about positioning and understanding.”

The round gets going on Saturday, starting with a six-pointer between promoted clubs Como and Parma at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium, while heavyweights AC Milan and Juventus will battle Udinese and Lazio at home respectively.

Lazio manager Marco Baroni acknowledges the tough test awaiting his team in Turin, but retains faith in his system and tactics: “We are building our identity and there are many positive takeaways.

“I try to put my players in the best conditions, I don’t want to change the playing system. We’re continuing on this path. I’m not worried, as long as the team is working on both phases [attack and defence], we’re on the right path.”

Sunday, aside from the Roma v Inter game, also features Napoli away to Empoli and Atalanta visiting Venezia, while the round closes out on Monday night with Verona hosting Monza at the Marc’Antonio Bentegodi Stadium.

Milan have endured some teething issues under new manager Paulo Fonseca and will need to find a sense of organisation and determination when they face ‘La Viola’ at the Artemio Franchi Stadium in Florence on Sunday night.
