The Lions of Teranga came from behind to inflict what was also the Three Lions’ first ever loss against an African opponent.

England were seeking a response from their disappointing display against Andorra on Saturday and drew first blood after just seven minutes.

Eberechi Eze stole possession and combined with Conor Gallagher to tee up Anthony Gordon, whose first-time shot was parried by Edouard Mendy for Harry Kane to tuck away the rebound.

Senegal responded well and drew themselves level five minutes before the break as Nicolas Jackson latched onto a ball over the top of the defence, before crossing for Ismaila Sarr to finish.

The visitors, who were unbeaten in 23 matches, then completed the turnaround in the 62nd minute with the Three Lions caught out by another lofted ball in behind the back line, and Habib Diarra capitalising on the space to beat Dean Henderson from a tight angle.

England thought they had equalised in the 84th minute when Jude Bellingham fired home from close range, only for the referee to rule Levi Colwill had handled in the build-up.

The hosts’ misery was compounded in the third minute of stoppage time when Lamine Camara dispossessed Curtis Jones and launched a quickfire counter, before finding Cheikh Sabaly, who controlled and tucked away.

U-20 AFCON: Ofei praises Black Satellites’ discipline in win over Senegal https://www.Adomonline.com/u-20-afcon-ofei-praises-black-satellites-discipline-in-win-over-senegal/ Tue, 06 May 2025 07:30:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531856 Black Satellites coach Desmond Ofei has commended his players for their disciplined performance in their hard-fought victory against defending champions Senegal at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana’s U-20 side claimed a crucial 1-0 win on Monday night at the New Suez Stadium, with Emmanuel Mensah’s first-half goal proving decisive.

Reacting to the result, Ofei praised his team for executing the game plan effectively.

“It was a very difficult game, no doubt about that,” he said, following Ghana’s 1-0 win over Senegal. “But tactically, I believe we got it right.”

He highlighted the physical challenge posed by the Senegalese side but lauded his players’ resilience and organisation.

“Senegal came at us with a very direct and physical approach. It wasn’t easy, but our players showed great tactical discipline and fighting spirit throughout the game.”

The coach also emphasised the importance of his team’s composure, particularly in maintaining their narrow lead under pressure.

“The boys followed the game plan, stayed organised, and gave everything on the pitch. That’s all you can ask for as a coach.”

Ghana will now turn their attention to their final Group C fixture against the Central African Republic, scheduled for Thursday, 8th May 2025.

Black Satellites stun defending champions Senegal with 1-0 victory https://www.Adomonline.com/black-satellites-stun-defending-champions-senegal-with-1-0-victory/ Tue, 06 May 2025 05:55:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531852 Ghana’s U-20 national team, the Black Satellites, recorded their first victory at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a hard-fought 1-0 win over defending champions Senegal on Monday night at the New Suez Stadium.

After opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, Coach Desmond Ofei’s side delivered a resolute performance to secure all three points in their second Group C match.

The Black Satellites began brightly, with Aziz Issah nearly giving Ghana an early lead. Senegal responded quickly, testing goalkeeper Gidios Aseako twice in the opening minutes—first through Yaya Dieme, and then with a well-struck free kick from the Senegalese captain.

Despite Senegal’s early pressure and dominance, Ghana made the most of their only shot on target in the first half. Jerry Afriyie, who was handed a starting role, set up Emmanuel Mensah with a perfectly timed assist, which Mensah calmly finished with a delicate chip over the goalkeeper to put Ghana ahead.

The Satellites held onto their slender lead going into the break, despite being largely outplayed in terms of possession and chances created.

Senegal resumed the second half strongly, but Aseako continued his impressive performance, pulling off several key saves to keep Ghana in front.

The Ghana shot-stopper was eventually shown a yellow card for time-wasting as Senegal pushed for an equaliser late in the game.

Ghana’s narrow victory moves them level on points at the top of Group C ahead of their final group-stage match against the Central African Republic.

Meanwhile, Senegal now face a must-win clash against DR Congo to keep their title defence alive.

U-20 AFCON: Black Satellites clash with Senegal in second Group C game https://www.Adomonline.com/u-20-afcon-black-satellites-clash-with-senegal-in-second-group-c-game/ Mon, 05 May 2025 12:12:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531649 The Black Satellites of Ghana will go head-to-head with reigning champions Senegal today, May 5, in a crucial group stage fixture at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), taking place at the New Suez Stadium.

Kick-off is slated for 18:00 GMT.

Both teams are eager to secure their first victory of the tournament following disappointing stalemates in their opening matches.

Ghana began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, while Senegal were held to a goalless draw by the Central African Republic.

This match rekindles memories of their 2019 group stage meeting, where Senegal triumphed 2-0, courtesy of a first-half brace from Youssouph Badji.

Historically, Ghana have only once faced a titleholder in the U-20 AFCON—back in 1993, when they defeated then-defending champions Egypt in the semi-finals.

Senegal boasts an impressive record against fellow West African Football Union (WAFU) nations, winning eight of their 12 encounters, with two draws and two losses, both to Nigeria in 2015.

The Teranga Cubs are currently unbeaten in open play in their last eight matches against WAFU opposition, registering seven wins and a draw, the latter ending in a penalty shootout defeat to Mali in the 2019 final.

Ghana’s track record against WAFU opponents is more mixed, with 11 wins, three draws, and 12 losses in 26 matches.

Recent performances have been inconsistent, managing just one win in their last four such encounters—a semi-final victory over Gambia in 2021. They lost the other three.

Today’s encounter promises to be a fiercely contested battle as both sides aim to boost their chances of advancing to the knockout stages.

]]> U-20 AFCON: Desmond Ofei calls on Black Satellites to be clinical against Senegal https://www.Adomonline.com/u-20-afcon-desmond-ofei-calls-on-black-satellites-to-be-clinical-against-senegal/ Mon, 05 May 2025 11:45:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531636 Ghana U-20 head coach Desmond Ofei has called on his players to improve their finishing ahead of their crucial Group C clash against Senegal at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

The Black Satellites are set to face the defending champions in their second group match at the New Suez Stadium later tonight.

Ghana began their tournament with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo last Friday, a game in which they failed to make the most of several scoring opportunities.

Reflecting on that performance, Ofei voiced his frustration over his team’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal but remains confident they can turn things around against Senegal.

“Against DRC, we created numerous chances but could not convert them,” he said.

“We need to be more clinical in today’s game, and that should ensure that we get the desired result to boost our chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals,” he added.

Kick-off is at 18:00 GMT.

U-20 AFCON: Hakim Sulemana vows better finishing against Senegal https://www.Adomonline.com/u-20-afcon-hakim-sulemana-vows-better-finishing-against-senegal/ Sat, 03 May 2025 15:33:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531249 Ghana U-20 forward Abdul Hakim Sulemana says the team is determined to improve their finishing in front of goal when they face Senegal in their next match at the ongoing Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The Black Satellites were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo on Friday night at the Suez Stadium in their Group C opener.

Samuel Ntanda-Lukisa opened the scoring for DR Congo in the 16th minute, but Ghana responded quickly, with Aziz Musibau netting the equaliser in the 24th minute.

Sulemana, who was named Man of the Match, admitted that the team struggled to convert their chances.

“I think we came all out, and it was just unfortunate we couldn’t capitalise on our chances,” Sulemana said.

“So the next time we get an opportunity, we are going to use our chances wisely,” he added.

All four teams in Group C—Ghana, DR Congo, Senegal, and the Central African Republic—currently sit on one point, after Senegal also played out a 1-1 draw against the Central African Republic.

Ghana will return to action on Monday, May 5, when they take on Senegal at the Suez Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00 GMT.

U-20 AFCON: Black Satellites coach Desmond Ofei unfazed by Senegal challenge https://www.Adomonline.com/u-20-afcon-black-satellites-coach-desmond-ofei-unfazed-by-senegal-challenge/ Mon, 21 Apr 2025 23:41:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527149 Head coach of Ghana’s U-20 national team, the Black Satellites, Desmond Ofei, says he remains confident and composed despite being drawn against reigning champions Senegal in the upcoming 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana has been placed in a challenging group alongside Senegal, DR Congo, and the Central African Republic. With only the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed sides, progressing to the quarterfinals, competition is expected to be fierce.

Speaking to CAF media, the young and ambitious Ofei acknowledged the strength of the opposition but maintained that his side would be ready for the test.

“It’s a big match, no doubt. But we’ll treat it like any other: with respect, focus, and confidence. We’ll execute our tactical plan, stay disciplined, and be fearless in key moments,” he said.

Ofei is hoping to guide the Black Satellites deep into the tournament and restore the team’s reputation on the continental stage following recent setbacks.

The 2025 U-20 AFCON will kick off on Sunday, April 27, and run through to the final on May 18.

Black Queens end Senegal tour with narrow defeat https://www.Adomonline.com/black-queens-end-senegal-tour-with-narrow-defeat/ Wed, 09 Apr 2025 11:09:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2523312 The Black Queens of Ghana concluded their international training tour with a 1-0 loss to Senegal on Tuesday, marking their second defeat under head coach Kims Lars Bjorkegren.

Earlier, Ghana had secured a 1-0 win in the first of two friendlies against the Teranga Lionesses last week, but the hosts responded with a late winner in the second match to split the series.

Bjorkegren made five changes to his starting lineup for the second game, handing starting roles to Nina Norshie, Justice Tweneboah, Ernestina Abambila, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, and Princella Adubea.

Ghana struggled to assert themselves in the first half, with Senegal dominating physically and stifling Ghana’s attacking threat. Despite the pressure, the visitors managed to hold on for a goalless first half.

In the second half, Bjorkegren replaced goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan with Kerrie McCarthy. Ghana created a few chances, with Boye-Hlorkah narrowly missing the target and Abambila making a crucial defensive intervention.

However, in the dying moments of the match, Senegal broke through Ghana’s defense to score the decisive goal in the 90th minute.

This result means the Black Queens have now recorded one win and two losses in three matches under their new coach.

These friendlies are part of Ghana’s preparations for the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco this July.

Bjorkegren reflects on red card impact in Black Queens’ win over Senegal https://www.Adomonline.com/bjorkegren-reflects-on-red-card-impact-in-black-queens-win-over-senegal/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 06:35:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2522312 Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has admitted that his side’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Senegal was heavily influenced by a second-half red card that forced a tactical shift.

Ghana took early control of the match at the Stade Lat-Dior in Thies, with Evelyn Badu scoring the only goal after a dominant opening phase. The early goal capped off a confident start for the Queens, who appeared composed and purposeful in possession.

However, the match took a dramatic turn shortly after the break when Ghana was reduced to ten players, altering the flow of the game and putting the team under sustained pressure.

“Towards the end of the first half, we were adapting to their physical style,” Bjorkegren said after the game.

“At halftime, we actually discussed the need to play football on the ground and move the ball faster. However, we didn’t, and early in the second half, we received a red card. When we did, it completely changed the game,” he added.

The friendly match is part of the Black Queens’ ongoing nine-day training camp, designed to evaluate players and fine-tune strategies ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures.

Ghana will face Senegal again on Tuesday to wrap up the two-match friendly series.

These matches are crucial to the Black Queens’ preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco later this year.

The match saw midfielder Evelyn Badu score the only goal of the game with a well-timed header in the first half, securing the win for Ghana.

“Of course, in professional football, you’re always happy when you win,” Bjorkegren told GFA Media after the game.

“For us, there was one main aim: to win the game. We were able to score a beautiful goal exactly how we wanted to play, with a perfect cross. Evelyn scored with a great header from a number 10 position,” he added.

The friendly is part of the Black Queens’ ongoing nine-day training camp, organized by the Ghana Football Association, in preparation for upcoming international engagements.

Ghana and Senegal are set to meet again on Tuesday, continuing their build-up to key fixtures later in the year, including the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will be held in Morocco.

Kim Lars Bjorkegren secures first win as Black Queens edge Senegal in a friendly https://www.Adomonline.com/kim-lars-bjorkegren-secures-first-win-as-black-queens-edge-senegal-in-a-friendly/ Sun, 06 Apr 2025 00:56:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2522202 Kim Lars Bjorkegren marked his first win as head coach of the Black Queens with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Senegal in an international friendly on Saturday in Dakar.

The match, played at the Stade Lat Dior, was the first of a two-legged friendly series between the two nations.

Midfielder Evelyn Badu proved to be the difference-maker, scoring the only goal of the game in the 24th minute.

The decisive moment came when Princess Owusu made an impressive run down the left wing and delivered a pinpoint cross, which Badu headed home from close range.

Bjorkegren made two changes to the lineup that featured against Morocco during the last international break, as Ghana looked to build momentum under their new manager.

The Black Queens started brightly, creating early chances but were initially unable to break through Senegal’s defence. Their persistence paid off midway through the first half with Badu’s well-taken goal.

Ghana continued to push for a second goal after the break but suffered a setback when Anasthesia Achiaa was shown a second yellow card, reducing the team to 10 players.

Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan was called into action late in the game, making a crucial save by tipping a dangerous shot onto the crossbar before collecting the rebound to preserve Ghana’s lead.

Despite late pressure from Senegal, the Black Queens held firm to claim the win — their first since defeating Namibia in December 2023 during the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Qualifiers.

The two sides will meet again on Tuesday, April 8, at the Stade Lat Dior to conclude the international doubleheader.

The match, which will take place in Dakar, is part of the teams’ preparations for the upcoming 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

After a setback in his first match in charge against Morocco during the previous international break, the Black Queens are eager to return to winning ways.

Speaking before the game, Bjorkegren acknowledged the strength of the Senegalese side but expressed confidence in his own team’s potential to secure victory.

“They [Senegal] play physical. They have a couple of really good players. We need to be ready. Also, like I said, I think the potential in our team is good enough to win the game.”

He also outlined his expectations for the game: “I expect us to control a little bit more of the game, create more chances than we did in Morocco and hopefully score some goals.”

The Black Queens are seeking their first win since defeating Namibia in the first leg of the last round of qualifiers for the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The squad has been strengthened by the return of midfielders Ernestina Abambilla and Patience Peterson-Kundok, defender Phillicity Asuako, and attacker Princess Owusu, who rejoin the team after a brief absence.

2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Senegal held by Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan https://www.Adomonline.com/2026-world-cup-qualifiers-senegal-held-by-kwesi-appiahs-sudan/ Sun, 23 Mar 2025 11:01:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2517884 Sudan’s impressive run in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup continued as a nation affected by civil war held Senegal to a 0-0 draw on neutral turf.

Sadio Mane came closest to a winner for the visitors late on in Benina, Libya, but saw an attempted chip saved by Sudan keeper Mohamed Mostafa before his follow-up effort was blocked by a defender on the line.

Mostafa then pulled off a stunning low stop to keep out a header from Cherif Ndiaye.

Sudan could have taken all three points themselves as Walieldin Khedr sent a shot flashing past the post earlier in the second half.

The Falcons of Jediane sit a point clear of DR Congo at the top of Group B halfway through the African campaign, with Senegal a point further behind.

Only the group winners are assured of a place at the expanded 48-team World Cup finals next year.

The four best-placed sides from across the nine groups will enter play-offs for a spot at an intercontinental tournament which will provide the final qualifiers.

Elsewhere in Group B, Togo and Mauritania drew 2-2 in an entertaining contest in Lome.

Those four sides are all back in action on Tuesday when Sudan host South Sudan, Senegal welcome Togo and DR Congo travel to Mauritania.

The final four group fixtures will be split across September and October.

Sudan tame Teranga Lions

Almost two years on from the start of the civil war, and with the country’s top two domestic clubs now playing in Mauritania, Sudan coach James Kwesi Appiah has got supporters dreaming of reaching the World Cup finals for the first time.

In the nine-month hiatus since the last qualifying fixtures the Sudanese had remarkably booked a place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations – eliminating four-time continental champions Ghana along the way.

But, returning to their bid to reach the United States, Mexico and Canada, Sudan almost made a disastrous start as goalkeeper Mustafa missed a clearing kick within the first 30 seconds.

However, he managed to recover and scramble the loose ball behind with Boulaye Dia set to pounce and slot into an empty net.

The hosts were not overawed by a side ranked as the second best in Africa, and 96 places above them, and Aboubaker Eisa missed a chance to slot Sudan in front in the 20th minute before Dia sent a header off target.

After the break Sudan midfielder Adbel Raouf tested Edouard Mendy with a low strike before having appeals for a penalty waved away as he challenged the keeper for the rebound.

Mane had sent an overhead kick narrowly wide before the former Liverpool forward was denied twice with 10 minutes remaining.

The West Africans remain unbeaten after five games in Group B but, with only two wins, have work to do to reach a third successive World Cup finals.

Togo and Mauritania share points

Earlier on Saturday, Mauritania scored their first goals of the campaign as they secured a draw in Togo.

Thibault Klidje headed the hosts ahead in Lome in the fourth minute, and Mauritania came close to an equaliser when Aboubakary Koita hit the right-hand upright 10 minutes before the break.

The game sparked into life in the second half as the visitors scored twice in the space of four minutes to turn the game on its head.

First Koita levelled with a fine curing shot across goal and then Abdallahi Mahmoud was presented with a simple tap-in at the back post from Sidi Bouna Amar’s low cross.

Kevin Denkey dragged Togo level in the 69th minute when he dispossessed Lamine Ba in the box and rifled in a low shot.

After that both sides had chances to win it as Mauritania striker Pape Yade struck a post after capitalising on an error from Sparrowhawks goalkeeper Malcolm Barcoa and then Togo substitute Kwame Mawuena narrowly missed the target with a header.

Since Ange joined, I feel more comfortable,” says Papa Matar Sarr of Spurs https://www.Adomonline.com/since-ange-joined-i-feel-more-comfortable-says-papa-matar-sarr-of-spurs/ Fri, 13 Dec 2024 08:22:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2483156 As Tottenham Hotspur gear up for their clash against Southampton this weekend, Showmax caught up with Senegalese star Pape Matar Sarr to chat about rise in the world of football.

The 22-year-old Senegalese midfielder discusses his journey to Spurs, his admiration for Ange Postecoglou’s philosophy, and his unwavering commitment to his national team.

Tell us about your relationship with the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, as it must be amazing for you playing home matches in it?

Yes, it’s incredible. When you think of matches at Tottenham. The stadium is really amazing, as I’m used to saying, it’s unreal, just like in films. We’re lucky enough to be here, so we have to enjoy playing in this amazing stadium.

Tell us about the season so far. Are you happy with the team’s performances?

Yes. It’s not too bad, we are doing well; we’ve won a few matches, even if there were some difficult moments. But the season is long, so we are persevering and we are ready.

Let’s take a look back at your past and talk about your journey so far. Tell us about your childhood in Senegal. What was Pape Matar Sarr’s childhood like?

I was an ambitious young man because my childhood was like that of other kids who dreamt of being football players. There were times when I was at school and other times when I was playing football in my neighbourhood, this is where I started. I liked playing football, so it was natural; I always had a ball with me. It was normal for me to call my friends to play football. But, yes, I was a little reserved, not very effusive. . . just like now, actually.  I used to play a lot in my neighbourhood and even at home, in my mother’s bedroom. I used to kick the ball everywhere, so she wasn’t too happy with it.

You also come from a football family. Your dad coached; your brother played too. Tell us how important football was to your family?

Not only my father, but my whole family is involved in football. My grandparents, my uncles – everyone. My brother plays in Luxembourg as well. So, it’s normal that football became a cultural thing for us, so we had to play football. it was part of your daily life, part of your DNA. That is all I lived for. Even with my studies, as my dad was pushing me a bit, but he would rather give me football boots than books or pencils.

Were you good at school?

I was not too bad! But I was more focused on football.

Let’s talk about Génération Foot, your first club where things got serious. What did that club give you, and when did you start this journey?

I was already in the national team when they spotted me. Before going there, I was an international player with the u-17 team. They saw me playing for the u-17s and they wanted me to join their academy. They talked to my previous coaches, and my father too, as he’s involved in football. We had a few talks with them. Well, at first, I didn’t want to, because back in Thiès, I liked it, I was with my family. I didn’t know that I needed to be supervised in order to get my break, that I needed to be supported and more serious, showing more professionalism, and Génération Foot helped me with that. This experience was a good thing as it allowed me to become professional, to grow up at every level, and to understand what professionalism is. I became professional and I’m grateful for that.

Some great players came through that academy: Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé, amongst others. Did it make the choice easier for you, knowing those guys went there before you?

Of course, when you hear that the academy coached Sadio Mané, Ismaïla Sarr, Diafra Sakho, it means something. At the time, Génération Foot and Diambars [fc] were my only options, to remain in Senegal anyway. I chose to join Génération Foot. Their organisation convinced me, so I went there to have more visibility, to work hard and achieve my goals.

Tell us about the time you arrived in Europe, at FC Metz.

I signed for FC Metz when I was already at Génération Foot. Those clubs have a partnership, so when they spot a player, they make him sign a contract, but he has to turn 18 before joining FC Metz. As for me, I joined FC Metz when I turned 18. It was a good experience, as my coach was Antonetti.

FC Metz is also a club where Mané played. Did it encourage you to sign for the club?

Of course. Like I said, when you hear that Sadio Mané joins a club and especially if you’re from Senegal, as he’s a role model for us. He played for Metz, so I thought: “why not do the same? ” from Génération Foot to FC Metz, and then, he just exploded. This was our dream too, and when you’re around the Génération Foot facilities, you will always hear people talk about his time there, as he went from Génération Foot to FC Metz. Abdoulaye Sarr also told me about the time Sadio was playing there. Ismaïla Sarr has had the same journey too so people talk a lot about those players. Of course, it inspires you and motivates you to follow the same path. FC Metz has been a good step for me.

A good step, but a quick one, as Tottenham were quick to make their move. Tell us about your first contact with Tottenham. Did they come looking for you fairly quickly?

Yes, they came looking for me because, at the time, I was only focused on football. Like you said, I was at Metz, and it all happened so fast. I played one season and Tottenham and other clubs were knocking on my door. I chose Tottenham because the club was well-organised, and their project convinced me, so I decided to go there. So, yes, it happened a bit too quickly, but in the end, it’s not too bad. I’ve waited for this moment for so long, was happy and satisfied because I thought that all the work, I had done was paying off. It was special, it was incredible.

Was it important for you, at that time, to stay a little longer at Metz, in order to keep adapting and improving your skills?

Yes, it was important because that was what I wanted at the time. I had started some work in Metz and I wanted to finish it. But it didn’t go the way I wanted because, unfortunately, the team got relegated to Ligue 2. I really wanted to help the team reach the top 5 before leaving, that is why I wanted to stay another year before going to Tottenham. I wanted to be ready right at the start of the season. Unfortunately, it didn’t go the way I wanted.

Meanwhile, Tottenham hired a new coach and Antonio Conte was in the dugout. Did it change anything for you? Was it the same project they told you about?

Yes, because the director was still here, so the project remained the same. I went there with the same objectives and the same personal ambitions, so I was already ready to get to work, ready to help Tottenham and “earn my spurs”.

Can you tell us about Tottenham? About your first season there?

I don’t really like talking about my debut at Tottenham because it wasn’t easy. It was a season full of tough times. But like I told you; I  was ready for that. I already told myself it wouldn’t be easy. I had to work hard and every time I had the chance to play, even if it was five or ten minutes, I was trying to show what I could do. Back at Metz, I used to play every match, but at Tottenham, even being named in the match day squad was a luxury. It was complicated! But I’ve never stopped working, nor believing in myself because i knew that sooner or later, it would pay off.

Was the hardest thing not to play?

Yes. There were many hard things; the language was complicated, too. I was alone in London, it was difficult. There were times when I didn’t feel good. It wasn’t an excuse, but if you mix all this with what was happening on the pitch, things get very tough. I went from Génération Foot to FC Metz, and from Metz to Tottenham, so it wasn’t easy for me, but I knew that at some point, things would get better, and that I would seize the opportunity.

In Yves Bissouma, you have a sort of older brother who has supported you and on whom you can rely. Did he help you through these hard times?

Yes. He really helped me as we talk to each other a lot. We had many talks, especially in the morning or at lunch. He has been in England for a while, so he gave me some advice, things that I need to do or improve. This is what is required here in England, anyway.

Do you remember your first match in the Premier League?

It was an incredible moment for me. I’ve waited for this moment for so long, and the match was here, even though we lost it. I was happy and satisfied because I thought that all the work I had done was paying off. It was special, it was incredible.

And from that time, things got better for you, you were able to play more minutes and get used to playing in the Premier League?

Yes, because I started to speak a little English and feel comfortable. Like I told you, things were difficult at first, but as soon as I learnt English, got used to the country and started to play, everything got better and I even played more minutes towards the end of the season.

There is also your goal against Manchester United, your first goal here – do you remember it?

I remember. I do. Scoring during such a great match, it can only make you feel good. Of course, Manchester United is a major club here in England, and being able to play in this kind of match is a real pleasure, it’s a dream. Scoring a goal on top of that is incredible.

For someone like you who, in the space of three years, went from Senegal to scoring a goal against Manchester United in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium must have been unreal?

Yes, it was crazy and I remember after the match, I got a lot of text messages, especially from back home because, as you may know, there are a lot of United fans there. So, it made me happy. I took it in my stride because, ultimately, it was just a football match. But I will never forget that goal, at least for now.

Another aspect of a football player’s career is the national team. Coming from Senegal, I suppose playing for the national team on the international stage is your holy grail?

You said it all. For me, Senegal means everything. And I’m working every day to be ready to help my national team, so every time they call me or I hear “Senegal”, I’m ready because it’s a beautiful country. People from there are very supportive with their fellow countrymen, whether you are injured or are going through difficulties. They support you; they defend you; they protect you. Our job as football players is to defend our colours because, like I said, Senegal means everything to me, and I’m sure my team-mates feel the same. This is why I’ll be always ready for the national team.

What is your best memory with the national team?

The AFCON, obviously.

In 2022?

Yes, the one we won. It was truly amazing; it was the best moment of my entire football career. Winning the AFCON with Senegal. . . Wow! It was incredible, I want to relive it.

Was it the best time of your life?

Yes, we can say that. And want to experience it again. I want to win more trophies with Senegal. It was a beautiful and incredible moment.

Let’s go back to the present at Tottenham. Like you said, you didn’t get to play many minutes in the Premier League, but you’ve managed to find your place in the team. Can you tell us how you feel, here and now?

I feel good at Tottenham. The squad is solid, we all get along. We work hard and, like you said, I didn’t play many minutes at first, but now my playing time has increased. I am able to play matches and help my team because that’s important too. I feel good, very good.

This is your second season under coach Ange Postecoglou. Can you tell us more about what his arrival has meant to you?

Only good things. Since he’s been here, I feel more comfortable. He likes football, as I like to say. He also protects us and wants us to play beautiful football. We are doing a very good job with him and you can see it in the club’s results because he’s only been here for two years, but the squad is solid, we win matches and play good football and this is good for him, but also for us because it’s important.

He said you’re always smiling. That some great players never smile while you always are. Is this part of your personality here?

This is who I am – I don’t get angry very easily, it’s just who I am. I don’t behave any different or have a different kind of character. I am straightforward, it’s just the way I am. He saw me smiling because it’s what I do every day. This is a good thing for me as well as an important thing for the squad because we see each other every morning, and maybe someone had a bad day or didn’t sleep well, so being positive is important.

What are your objectives for the season?

The objective is to win as many matches as possible, especially in the Premier League because, obviously, if you win every match, you’re bound to win something. As for the Europa League, of course, it’s another objective for us, but we’re focusing on the league as we have made a good start. We’ll take it one step at a time and see where it takes us.

Black Queens’ friendlies against Senegal and Tunisia in limbo https://www.Adomonline.com/black-queens-friendlies-against-senegal-and-tunisia-in-limbo/ Wed, 27 Nov 2024 10:00:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2476306 The Black Queens’ scheduled international friendlies against Senegal and Tunisia are in jeopardy due to a lack of funding, as neither the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) nor the Ghana Football Association (GFA) can raise the $40,000 required for the matches, JoySports has learned.

The two matches, planned for the November international window, were intended to help the team prepare for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

However, financial constraints have stalled arrangements, making it unlikely the games will take place.

According to Joy Sports sources, the $40,000 was needed to cover expenses for both matches. However, the GFA does not have the funds, and the Sports Ministry has not approved the budget.

The Queens have not played a game since their last friendly against Japan in July. Head coach Nora Häuptle was counting on the fixtures to assess the squad’s readiness ahead of next year’s WAFCON in Morocco.

The Black Queens qualified for the continental tournament earlier this year after defeating Namibia in the final round of qualifiers. Ghana will compete in a challenging group alongside defending champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali.

With their return to the WAFCON for the first time since 2018, the lack of competitive friendlies has left players and technical team members frustrated.

Cisse exit ‘very sad’ for Senegal football president https://www.Adomonline.com/cisse-exit-very-sad-for-senegal-football-president/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 06:50:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2473543 The president of Senegal’s football federation (FSF) was “very sad” to see Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach Aliou Cisse leave his role last month following a directive from the country’s sports ministry.

Cisse, who led the West Africans to a first ever Nations Cup (Afcon) title in February 2022, was let go after nearly a decade in charge – with the FSF and sports ministry, which pays the national coach’s salary, at odds over the decision.

During his tenure, Senegal were also runners-up at the 2019 Afcon and reached two Fifa World Cups, and the 48-year-old had not lost a competitive match, other than on penalties, since the start of last year.

“Before he arrived we had never won a continental trophy,” FSF chief Augustin Senghor told BBC Sport Africa.

“This was enormous for us. For this reason I think it was good to let him finish his job, because Senegal is in a phase of transition.

“He went because of a decision by government. We respect it because we respect the authority.”

Although Cisse’s contract had expired in August, he stayed on for September’s opening 2025 Afcon qualifiers, picking up four points from two games, and was expecting to receive a 12-month extension to his deal.

“He was surprised, but the message he gave was that he did not want to create a difficult crisis,” Senghor explained.

“He’s very committed to his country. He said: ‘President, I will support Senegalese football because I am a son of this country’.”

Overseeing change

Senghor had wanted Cisse to finish the shortest Afcon qualifying campaign in a decade, with all six fixtures completed in the space of three months.

“The generation of Sadio Mane, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Kalidou Koulibaly and others have maybe one or two years to play, and perhaps one more World Cup,” Senghor said.

“After that, we have the new generation – Lamine Camara, Pape Matar Sarr, Habib Diarra and all the players who were in our youth teams.

“We’ve been working on it for a long time and Aliou was one of the key men in this plan.

“We think it would have been better if he stayed for one more year to finalise the transition and leave with honour.”

However, Senghor believes Cisse is young enough to return to the job in future.

Avoiding conflict

Image caption: Senegal’s triumph at the 2021 Afcon prompted scenes of jubilation on the squad’s return to Dakar

Cisse’s lengthy tenure – a rarity on the continent – coincided with Senegal’s most sustained period of success as they spent four years as Africa’s top-ranked side.

Prior to his appointment in March 2015, the national team had reached one Afcon final and one World Cup – with both of those appearances coming in 2002 when Cisse captained the side.

Their improved fortunes kick-started a run that saw the Teranga Lions conquer the continent at Under-20 and Under-17 level, as well as in the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The axe came quickly when it fell, with Cisse dismissed just two days before a planned squad announcement.

An FSF statement said he had failed to reach his objectives, namely: winning this year’s Afcon and reaching the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup (where they lost to England in the last 16), slipping down the world rankings (Senegal are 20th, three places below their record high) and, crucially, “the risk of disaffection between our national team and the Senegalese in general”.

Criticism of Cisse’s tactics had increased after their 2023 Afcon exit – sparking the ministry’s move in what many saw as a populist act.

“The agenda of the government is not the same as the agenda of football,” Senghor said.

“They decided and, unfortunately, we could not oppose it. If we want to continue, we need to do so in a framework of stability.”

Senghor added that conflict between the FSF and the government is “not fruitful”.

New Senegal boss expected before March

Image caption: Pape Thiaw was placed in charge for Senegal’s final four Afcon 2025 qualifiers

Pape Thiaw, previously Cisse’s assistant and also the coach who led Senegal to their CHAN triumph last year, has completed the Afcon 2025 qualifying campaign.

“We said ‘We’ll do Aliou without Aliou – he’s not here, but he’s here. Every time you are on the bench, think that Aliou is with you’,” explained Senghor.

Two victories over Malawi secured qualification from Group L with two games to spare.

There are four months until the next international break in March, when Senegal will resume their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup.

“We have three or four months to go slowly, smartly and make the right choice,” said Senghor, who expects to appoint a new coach before those games.

Targeting World Cup progress

It is probable the FSF will look internally, continuing a vision that Senghor has instilled since taking charge in 2009.

“Nowadays, all our coaches are from our country and we don’t have any reason to change,” he said.

“When you want to build something in your nation, you have to first begin by building the coaches and their skills.

“It is working. Now is not the moment to change the philosophy.”

Whoever gets the job will have to accept some lofty targets.

They hope to not only surpass their historic World Cup quarter-final appearance in 2002 but also Morocco’s run at Qatar 2022, when the Atlas Lions became the first African side to reach the semi-finals.

“Qualifying for the Nations Cup is not an event for us now,” ventured Senghor.

“Now our target is to go to the World Cup every four years and to improve in the World Cup, maybe go further than Morocco – to the final.

“Why not? We have the potential.”

Mane strikes to secure Senegal’s spot at Afcon 2025 https://www.Adomonline.com/mane-strikes-to-secure-senegals-spot-at-afcon-2025/ Tue, 15 Oct 2024 16:20:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2460828 An injury-time winner from Sadio Mane secured Senegal’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) while Angola, DR Congo and Egypt have also reached the finals with two rounds of matches to spare.

The Teranga Lions were heading for a goalless draw away against Malawi before former Liverpool forward Mane, who now plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, struck in the 96th minute in Lilongwe.

Senegal move on to 10 points in Group L alongside Burkina Faso and have joined their fellow West Africans in booking a place at the 2025 Nations Cup in Morocco.

The 2021 Afcon winners progressed despite parting company with long-serving coach Aliou Cisse earlier this month.

There were surprises elsewhere on Tuesday as reigning continental champions Ivory Coast fell to a shock 1-0 loss away against Sierra Leone while Ghana are on the brink of elimination after defeat by Sudan.

The Black Stars remain third in Group F with just two points from four games, and qualification is now out of their hands.

The West Africans must now win their remaining games against Angola and Niger next month and hope that Sudan, who have seven points, lose both of theirs.

The final two rounds of qualifiers will be held next month while the 2025 Nations Cup is scheduled to begin on 21 December next year, with the final on 18 January 2026.

Egypt through without Salah

Record seven-time continental champions Egypt made it four wins from four in Group C despite the absence of captain Mohamed Salah, who was released early from international duty.

The Pharaohs triumphed 1-0 against Mauritania as Ibrahim Adel struck in the 85th minute in Nouakchott.

DR Congo also sealed their spot at the finals as Meschack Elia scored twice late on to give them a 2-0 away win in Tanzania.

The Leopards, who finished fourth at the 2023 finals earlier this year, have won all four games in Group H without conceding.

Uganda moved to the brink of a place at the finals after a 2-0 win in South Sudan, but will have to wait until next month for confirmation after Congo held South Africa to a 1-1 draw in Brazzaville elsewhere in Group K.

Five-time Afcon winners Cameroon and Algeria picked up their tickets for the 24-team tournament in North Africa with victories on Monday.

Boris Enow gave Cameroon a 1-0 win over Kenya in neutral Kampala while an 18th-minute penalty from Remy Bensebaini was enough for Algeria to triumph 1-0 against Togo in Lome.

Ghana on brink of elimination

Angola extended their perfect start in Group F as Zine’s first-minute effort gave the Palancas Negras a 1-0 victory away against Niger in neutral Casablanca.

However, Ghana are in danger of failing to qualify for the Nations Cup for the first time since 2004 after slumping to a 2-0 away defeat against Sudan.

Fielding a strong team, captained by West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus and including Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth, the Black Stars were undone by two quick second-half goals.

Sudan forward Ahmed Al-Tash bundled the ball over the line for their first in the 62nd minute after Saif Teiri’s shot rebounded off the post.

Mohamed Abdelrahman doubled the lead just three minutes later, running onto a through ball from Ahmed Yousif and slotting past Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi.

The match was played in the Libyan city of Benghazi as Sudan cannot play at home because of the civil war in the country.

Sudan, coached by former Ghana boss Kwesi Appiah, last played at the Nations Cup during the 2021 edition in Cameroon.

Senegal part company with Afcon-winning coach Cisse https://www.Adomonline.com/senegal-part-company-with-afcon-winning-coach-cisse/ Wed, 02 Oct 2024 14:51:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2455884 Aliou Cisse has been relieved of his position as Senegal coach after nine and a half years in charge of the Teranga Lions.

The 48-year-old guided the West Africans to their first continental title, winning the delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in February 2022.

Although his previous contract ended in August, he remained in charge for Senegal’s two 2025 Afcon qualifiers last month, a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso and a 1-0 victory over Burundi.

The country’s football federation (FSF) wanted Cisse’s deal to be renewed but the sports ministry, under Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s new government, has made the decision to end his long tenure just nine days before the next round of qualifiers.

“The FSF would like to thank Aliou Cisse for his good collaboration and his brilliant results at the head of various national selections and wishes him every success for the future,” a statement said.

While relations between the government, who pay the coach’s salary, and the FSF have not always been easy, the timing of the move is a surprise.

Cisse had already called a press conference for Friday to announce his squad for this month’s double-header against Malawi.

Cisse, who won 35 caps for Senegal as a player, took charge in March 2015 and his longevity in the role helped establish the Teranga Lions as Africa’s top-ranked side for over four years.

Their Nations Cup title won on penalties against Egypt in Cameroon, came three years after finishing as runners-up at the 2019 edition of the finals.

However, the defence of their trophy earlier this year ended in the last 16 after a penalty shootout defeat against hosts and eventual champions Ivory Coast.

The Teranga Lions also reached the 2018 and 2022 Fifa World Cups, but exited in the group stage and last 16 respectively, with Morocco replacing Cisse’s side as Africa’s highest-raked nation in December 2022.

Meanwhile, Senegal currently sit second in their group, two points behind leaders Sudan, after four rounds of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. That campaign is set to resume next March.

The FSF’s statement said that Khady Diene Gaye, Senegal’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, had not approved a one-year contract extension for Cisse in a letter it received on Monday.

It said the reasons behind the decision were the “failure to achieve the objectives assigned in November 2022” – namely reaching the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup and winning the 2023 Afcon title – the “regression” in the world rankings and “the risk of disaffection between our national team and the Senegalese in general”.

The FSF is yet to announce an interim coaching team for the upcoming 2025 Afcon qualifiers against Malawi.

Triumph and tragedy

Cisse was part of Senegal’s first golden generation during his playing career, which included spells at Sedan, Paris St-Germain, Birmingham City and Portsmouth.

He captained the national side at the 2002 World Cup as they shocked holders France en route to reaching the quarter-finals on their first appearance at the tournament.

Earlier that year, he had missed the decisive penalty in the shootout at the end of the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations final against Cameroon, while in September 2002 he experienced personal tragedy in the Joola ferry disaster.

Eleven family members, including his sister, died when the ship, often labelled ‘Africa’s Titanic’, sank off the coast of The Gambia.

He told BBC Sport Africa in 2022 that he still feels the effects of the tragedy, which he says he could easily have been part of.

“I can’t even count how many times I took the ferry,” he said.

“Every time I came back home, I travelled on the Joola. I could have easily been on the boat too, so I was lucky.”

His coaching career started when he joined the FSF in 2011 and he first worked with Senegal’s Under-23 team, including at the 2012 Olympics, before taking charge of the Teranga Lions following the departure of Alain Giresse.

Senegal newspapers go dark amid press freedom warnings https://www.Adomonline.com/senegal-newspapers-go-dark-amid-press-freedom-warnings/ Wed, 14 Aug 2024 11:06:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2433677 Senegalese commuters hoping to browse the news on their way to work were left disappointed on Tuesday – most national newspapers refused to publish in protest against what they see as shrinking media freedom under the new government.

The media is experiencing “one of the darkest days of its history,” the local Council of Press Distributors and Publishers (CDEPS) said.

It accuses the government – led by former opposition politicians – of freezing the bank accounts of media companies and seizing their equipment over alleged non-payment of taxes.

Officials justify the crackdown by saying they were trying to end practices that lead to financial embezzlement and mismanagement in the media industry.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye came to power in March after defeating the ruling coalition’s candidate in elections.

His rise to power came after the opposition led huge protests to demand elections that then-President Macky Sall postponed in what his critics saw as a ploy to cling to power.

As part of Tuesday’s media blackout, newspapers were displayed on newsstands with no content inside. The editions solely consisted of a black cover reading “journée sans presse” ( French for “day without press”) and an image of three raised fists gripping a pencil.

Not all papers participated in the protest – private outlet Wal Fadjri called the blackout an “ugly scar on the cheek of our beautiful democracy”.

While agreeing that the press was experiencing a “crisis”, Wal Fadjri said a blackout should be the last resort as it would deprive readers of their right to information.

Radio stations largely rejected the boycott, but two popular private stations opted to play music instead of airing the news.

Private television channels like TFM (owned by Grammy award-winning singer Youssou N’Dour), ITV, and 7 TV broadcast news while demonstrating their support for the protest by featuring its slogan and image.

Concerns that the Mr Faye’s government would try to restrict the media emerged a few months ago.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko was criticised by media professionals in June for warning that the government would no longer tolerate “falsehood” by journalists, who he said were enjoying “too much impunity”.

Mr Sonko used to be the public face of the opposition, and was barred from running for the presidency. He then backed Mr Faye.

Both of them had been imprisoned under the former government, and pledged to tackle corruption and strengthen democracy in Senegal.

From 2021 to 2024, Senegal slipped from 49th to 94th place on media watchdog Reporters Without Borders’ world press freedom index.

The rights group recently urged Senegal’s new president to take action to promote press freedom after years of “arrests and attacks on journalists, media closures and arbitrary Internet shutdowns” under Mr Sall.

2026 WCQ: Senegal and DR Congo win, Tunisia draw https://www.Adomonline.com/2026-wcq-senegal-and-dr-congo-win-tunisia-draw/ Mon, 10 Jun 2024 11:14:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407087 Senegal moved to the top of their group in African qualifying for the 2026 World Cup after Habib Diallo’s header gave the Teranga Lions a 1-0 win in Mauritania.

The striker got in front of his marker on the edge of the six-yard box to meet an inswinging cross from Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr in the 27th minute in Nouakchott.

There was a lengthy delay in completing the match after frustrated home fans threw objects on to the pitch in the second half and proceedings were halted.

DR Congo are a point behind Senegal in the Group B table after the Leopards registered a 1-0 home win against Togo, with Brentford forward Yoane Wissa superbly setting up Meschack Elia’s early goal.

Meanwhile, Tunisia’s perfect start came to an end with a goalless draw away against Namibia, but the Carthage Eagles remain top of Group H on 10 points.

All nine group winners at the end of the 10-match campaign are guaranteed a place at the 2026 finals, while another African side could book a spot in the United States, Mexico and Canada via an intercontinental tournament.

The fourth round of qualifiers continues on Monday and Tuesday, after which the African preliminaries will pause until March 2025.

Qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations are scheduled to be played in September, October and November, although the dates for both the group draw and the finals themselves in Morocco are yet to be announced by the Confederation of African Football.

Teranga Lions survive heated derby

Senegal had been held to a 1-1 draw at home by DR Congo on Thursday, a result which had left Sudan two points clear at the top of Group B.

The Teranga Lions were without Sadio Mane and Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson through injury but extended their unbeaten start following a fiercely contested West African derby against Mauritania played in hot conditions.

Mauritania’s Aboubakary Koita hit the crossbar with an early free-kick and Edouard Mendy tipped a fierce shot from the forward over the bar in first-half injury time as the hosts sought an equaliser.

Abdallahi Mahmoud wasted a glorious chance to equalise on the hour mark after Mendy had again denied Koita.

In Kinshasa, the only goal came in the sixth minute when DR Congo forward Wissa was freed down the left and then sent in a cross with the outside of his right boot which Elia volleyed in from a narrow angle at the back post.

Togo were mostly limited to long-range efforts in reply, with Karim Dermane going close.

Sudan could move back to the summit if they win in South Sudan on Tuesday.

In Group H, Namibia were unable to make their first-half chances count during their home game against Tunisia in neutral Johannesburg,

However, the North Africans could count themselves somewhat fortunate when Charles Hambira’s 14th-minute effort was ruled out after Erastus Kalula was adjudged to have fouled goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said.

The draw takes Namibia on to eight points in Group H, two behind Tunisia, while Liberia are a point further back after Sheikh Sesay’s last-minute winner gave the Lone Stars a 1-0 away win against Sao Tome e Principe in neutral Oudja, Morocco.

However, the picture is complicated by Fifa’s ruling that Emilio Nsue was ineligible to play for Equatorial Guinea in their first two qualifiers – which turned their 1-0 wins over Namibia and Liberia into 3-0 defeats.

The Central Africans could yet appeal the sanction.

Elsewhere, Djibouti picked up their first point in Group A with a 1-1 draw against Ethiopia, who remain fifth in a table topped by Egypt.

Facing off against Senegal’s Young Teranga Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium, the Black Satellites showcased their dominance in the first half.

Despite their control of the game, Ghana couldn’t convert their opportunities, entering halftime on equal footing with their opponents.

The second half saw Ghana maintaining their pressure, although Senegal managed some offensive moments, struggling to breach the host’s defense.

In the crucial 83rd minute, substitute Michael Ephson turned the tide, netting a close-range goal to give the Black Satellites the lead they deserved.

Holding onto their advantage, Ghana clinched a narrow victory, booking their ticket to the final.

They will now gear up to face Uganda, who emerged victorious against Congo in the other semifinal match.

The final showdown is set for Friday, March 22nd at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Both teams, renowned powerhouses in youth football across Africa, are gearing up for a showdown that is expected to ignite passion and intensity at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Satellites, buoyed by their stellar performances in the group stage, secured their spot in the semi-finals after topping Group A with an impressive tally of seven points.

Led by their talented squad, the Ghanaian side is determined to showcase their prowess and claim victory on home soil.

Meanwhile, Senegal advanced to the semi-finals by finishing second in Group B, narrowly edging past Nigeria with six points.

The Senegalese team, known for their skillful play and tenacity, will be eager to upset the hosts and secure a spot in the tournament final.

In the other semi-final clash, Uganda will take on Congo in what promises to be another thrilling match-up.

Uganda, the standout team in Group A, dominated the group stage with a perfect record, accumulating nine points.

However, they will face a tough challenge from Congo, who finished second in the group with five points and are determined to cause an upset.

With a place in the final at stake, all four teams are set to leave everything on the field as they vie for glory in the prestigious tournament.

Senegal President Mack Sall announces March 24 election https://www.Adomonline.com/senegal-president-mack-sall-announces-march-24-election/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 12:29:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2366043 Senegal’s government has announced that the country’s presidential election will take place on 24 March.

The announcement follows tension in the West African nation after President Macky Sall postponed the election last month, sparking widespread protests.

Parliament has also passed an amnesty law for crimes linked to the protests.

The president’s opponents had accused him of mounting a constitutional coup but he denies seeking to extend his term of office.

Mr Sall’s 12 years in power is due to end on 2 April.

The announcement of the election date has been welcomed by opposition figures.

“What we are looking forward now is fair, just and transparent elections. That is the last duty that President Macky Sall has to fulfil,” Aminata Touré, a former prime minister under Mr Sall who switched to the opposition, told the BBC’s Newsday programme.

Senegal has long been seen as one of the most stable democracies in Africa.

It is the only country in mainland West Africa that has never had a military coup.

Prior to Wednesday’s announcement, authorities had attempted to postpone the original 25 February poll to December, which resulted in deadly unrest on the streets.

But the Constitutional Council later ruled that the presidential election must take place before 2 April.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, Mr Sall dissolved the government and replaced Prime Minister Amadou Ba with Interior Minister Sidiki Kaba.

This was so that Mr Ba, the ruling coalition’s presidential candidate, could focus on his electoral campaign, the presidency said.

President Sall has served two terms as Senegal’s leader and when he was first elected in 2012 he promised he would not overstay.

In another attempt to defuse political tensions, lawmakers have approved a bill which gives amnesty for all offences “relating to demonstrations or having political motivations” that were committed 1 February 2021 to 25 February 2024.

Ninety-four members of parliament backed the measure while 49 voted against it.

Critics say the law will shield the perpetrators of serious crimes, including members of security forces who killed dozens of protesters, as well as Mr Sall.

But the law’s supporters say it will benefit the opposition, as it could pave the way for the release of leading opposition politician Ousmane Sonko and thousands of his supporters.

Mr Sonko was at the forefront of the campaign against Mr Sall, and was imprisoned in 2023 on what he said were trumped-up charges aimed at barring him from running for president.

Despite the latest political reforms, the list of candidates eligible to contest the presidency remains unchanged, meaning Mr Sonko still cannot run for office.

Nevertheless vice-president of his Pastef party, Yacine Fall, told the BBC that the announcement of an election date was “a big relief for the whole country”.

“Unfortunately, Ousmane Sonko had been illegally prevented from being a candidate, but we are still happy to see that Pastef… has a candidate,” she said.

“We are hopeful and we are convinced that if the campaign is done and due process is put in motion, Pastef will win the election and Bassirou Diomaye will be the next president of Senegal.”

However, Mr Diomaye is currently in prison – he is one of those hoping to be freed – while Pastef has been banned on charges of calling for insurrection.

Another leading opposition figure, Karim Wade, is not on the list of approved candidates and so will also not be able to take part in the election which is in just over a fortnight’s time.

2023 AFCON: Hosts Ivory Coast oust holders Senegal in shootout https://www.Adomonline.com/2023-afcon-hosts-ivory-coast-oust-holders-senegal-in-shootout/ Mon, 29 Jan 2024 23:35:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2348987 Moussa Niakhate missed his penalty in the shoot-out as holders Senegal tumbled out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a drama-filled 5-4 loss to hosts Ivory Coast following a 1-1 draw at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in their last-16 clash on Monday.

Senegal were quick out the blocks and took the lead inside four minutes as Sadio Mane’s cross from the left was chested down by Habib Diallo, whose thunderous shot from 10-yards settled in the top corner of the net.

Mane was fortunate not to get a red card shortly after that following a poor challenge, but Senegal could not add to their lead and paid the price when the Ivorians were awarded a clear penalty and equalised through Franck Kessie four minutes from the end of the 90 minutes.

Ivory Coast will now face the winner of Tuesday’s last-16 tie between Mali and Burkina Faso in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

The Ivorians were in disarray just days ago. Hammered 4-0 in a record loss on home soil by Equatorial Guinea, they were on the verge of elimination and sacked coach Jean-Louis Gasset, replacing him with assistant Emerse Fae.

But a fortuitous set of results elsewhere saw them squeeze into the last-16 and they put up a much-improved display against a Senegal side that had won all three of their pool matches with relative ease.

“It’s very emotional, the last few days were tough for us,” Ivory Coast striker Sebastien Haller said. “We have opened the door and given ourselves a chance. We can forget now about what happened in the group stages.”

The hosts were the better side on the night and might have wrapped things up before the need for penalties, but will simply be relieved to fight another day having avoided an embarrassing early exit from their own tournament.

Leading 1-0, Senegal thought they should have had a penalty in the second half when Ismaila Sarr went down in the box, but the match officials decided there was not enough contact to send him sprawling, much to the annoyance of coach Aliou Cisse. Mane also fired wide when he should have scored.

The Ivorians could have been level when Nicolas Pepe had a clear shot of goal but could not beat Edouard Mendy, before they were awarded a clear spot-kick on VAR review as the former was clattered in the box by the latter and Kessie buried his kick.

The game went to penalties and the unfortunate Niakhate missed his side’s third kick as he struck the post and the Ivorians held their nerve to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

2023 AFCON: Senegal beat Guinea to top group with 100% record https://www.Adomonline.com/2023-afcon-senegal-beat-guinea-to-top-group-with-100-record/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 21:45:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345794 Defending champions Senegal secured top spot in Group C at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Guinea 2-0 in an ill-tempered encounter.

Abdoulaye Seck headed the Teranga Lions in front from a free-kick and Iliman Ndiaye sealed victory with a fine low finish in the final minute.

Guinea knew they would go through before kick-off and finished third after Cameroon beat The Gambia 3-2.

Senegal progress from the group stage as the only side with a 100% record.

Aliou Cisse’s side will stay in Yamoussoukro and face a third-placed side from Group A or F in the last 16 on Monday, while Guinea will play Group A winners Equatorial Guinea on Sunday in Abidjan.

The Syli National finished third behind Cameroon on goals scored, with their four-point tally meaning four-time continental champions Ghana were eliminated from the finals after the Black Stars ended third in Group B on two points.

Results on Monday meant Guinea were guaranteed to go through as one of four best third-placed sides at the very least, and boss Kaba Diawara made several changes to rest players for the knockout stages.

Both sides were fired up for this West African derby, but there was not a single shot on target in the first half as the teams struggled to create openings.

An early challenge from Senegal midfielder Nampalys Mendy on Guinea’s Ilaix Moriba sparked an argument between players, and the first real chance of the game came when a thunderous shot from Mendy was diverted over the bar off the head off Mohamed Ali Camara.

Guinea employed a physical approach but could not provide service to star striker Serhou Guirassy, who was making his first appearance at the tournament following injury and could not get the better of Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly.

The holders appealed for a penalty on the stroke of half-time as star forward Sadio Mane fell to the ground following a duel with Saidou Sow, but referee Pacifique Ndabihawenimana waved play on.

The Burundian official did have work to do in first-half injury time when Ismail Jakobs sparked a mass confrontation which involved both sets of substitutes benches after the Senegal left-back shoved Guinea captain Naby Keita to the ground.

2023 AFCON: Senegal manager Aliou Cisse treated in hospital for stomach pain https://www.Adomonline.com/2023-afcon-senegal-manager-aliou-cisse-treated-in-hospital-for-stomach-pain/ Sun, 21 Jan 2024 07:49:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2344565 Senegal manager Aliou Cisse “is back with the group” after being taken to hospital on Friday with stomach pain.

The head coach of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) holders returned “reassuring” test results, read a statement from the Senegalese Football Federation, issued on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, Cisse’s side had beaten Cameroon 3-1 to book their place in the last 16 of the 2023 tournament.

The victory gave the Indomitable Lions two wins out of two in the group stage.

The federation said Cisse, who was appointed in March 2015 and guided Senegal to their first Afcon triumph two years after reaching the final under his leadership, had been attended to by medical staff in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, where his team have played both of their opening matches at the finals.

Former Senegal defender Cisse oversaw a 3-0 win over The Gambia on Monday as the world’s 20th-ranked nation made a strong start to their campaign.

“I congratulate the players because they played a great match,” he said.

“They respected my instructions and all the advice that I gave them.”

Senegal will win Group C if they avoid defeat against Guinea on Tuesday (17:00 GMT).

“We must remain focused,” added Cisse.

“We have played two matches in the competition so far and there are five remaining in order to reach the stated goal.”

A few hours earlier, Cape Verde were the first country to secure a last-16 place by hammering Mozambique 3-0 in Abidjan.

Sarr netted in the first half and Diallo and Mane in the second in Yamoussoukro to give the title-holders a maximum of six points after two Group C matches. The losers have only one.

Jean-Charles Castelletto scored late in the second half to halve the deficit to 2-1, but Senegal were not to be denied a convincing victory and Mane put the outcome beyond doubt.

Guinea face the Gambia later in the second match of a double-header and a victory would lift them three points above Cameroon with just one round of matches remaining.

Cameroon recalled Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, who missed a draw with Guinea after arriving late in West Africa, but slack defending contributed to the goals he conceded.

Senegal kicked off with five of the team that started the 2022 final against Egypt in Yaounde, which they won in a penalty shootout with Mane scoring the decisive spot-kick.

Cameroon had to do without star forward Vincent Aboubakar again as he had not recovered from a thigh injury that ruled him out of a draw with Guinea four days ago.

AFCON 2023: How Senegal came to dominate African football https://www.Adomonline.com/afcon-2023-how-senegal-came-to-dominate-african-football/ Tue, 16 Jan 2024 09:13:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2342441 Morocco may have made history in 2022 by becoming the first African team to reach the Fifa World Cup semi-finals, but the continent’s dominant footballing force lies further down the coast in Senegal.

The Teranga Lions are defending their Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) title in Ivory Coast this month, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Senegal are also reigning continental champions at Under-17 and Under-20 level, and even won the African Nations Championship (CHAN), the competition for domestic-based players for the first time last year.

Aliou Cisse’s men began their Group C campaign with a 3-0 win over The Gambia on Monday as they look to become the first side to register back-to-back Afcon triumphs since Egypt won their third in a row in 2010.

“We have just the one star,” the 47-year-old, referring to having lifted the trophy just once, said.

“We are keen to win again, to continue winning it.”

Cisse himself was part of Senegal’s original golden generation, which finished as runners-up at the 2002 Afcon before reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup later that year on the country’s debut at the finals.

Former international team-mate El Hadji Diouf believes Senegal’s recent success is the result of both a strong partnership between the government and the country’s football federation (FSF) and critical investment in facilities.

“Everywhere you go in Senegal, all the cities have academies,” Diouf told BBC Sport Africa.

“They start young, at Under-10, and have tournaments every year. We want to improve that and have the same organisation like in England and France.

“I have to say congratulations and thanks for our government because that’s a policy and they give the money. And the president of the FSF, Augustin Senghor, is working so well.”

Senegal’s hold over the African game even stretches to beach soccer, with the country winning the past four continental titles and finishing fourth at the last Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia in 2021.

Pathways and coaching stability

Image caption: Aliou Cisse captained Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup in 2002, and has been national team coach since 2015

Alongside the establishment of local academies and infrastructure, Souleymane Diallo, a part-time coach of national age groups and a research professor at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, says a pathway has been created to move talent from youth international level to the senior side.

“Senegal has an extraordinary potential of players and we’re being patient with the generations,” Diallo told BBC Sport Africa.

“At grassroots level, we have a very broad base and we’re creating channels through which these players can reach the first team.

“The federation asks us to put players who have played in the lower categories on the radar so that each generation can move on from a lower level to a higher one.

“If they finish their category at U17, they go to U20. If they finish at U20 they go on to the U23s, the CHAN team and the first team.”

Another big factor in Senegal’s long-term strategy has been to ensure stability in the dugout. Cisse has been in charge of the Teranga Lions since March 2015 and has slowly built towards success.

A quarter-final exit in the 2017 Afcon (on penalties) was followed by a defeat in the 2019 final, before Senegal returned to triumph in Cameroon in February 2022.

During that time the West Africans were the continent’s top-ranked side for over four years before being replaced by Morocco following their historic World Cup run.

Image caption: Senegal’s colourful fans have got used to watching sides from the country lift continental trophies but witnessed an earlier exit at the 2022 World Cup

Senegal exited in the last 16 in Qatar, beaten 3-0 by England, but there were no questions over Cisse’s future.

“Senegal’s policy is to insist that coaches stay on the national bench for as long as possible,” Diallo said.

“A roadmap has been put in place which ensures all national coaches have the same requirements in terms of training content and information, and created channels for liaison.”

Participating in continental and global tournaments at youth level more frequently has helped boost the nation’s fortunes.

“The process of reaching the top level is a gradual one,” Diallo said.

“In the past, we didn’t win in Africa because we didn’t regularly take part in African competitions.

“If you want to win, you have to be there first. The first step is to solve the problem of being present at these competitions, and that’s what Senegal has done.

“We need to be present all the time, and it’s now that we’re going to lay the foundations for winning the World Cup in the future.”

‘Nothing to fear’ in Ivory Coast

Senegal forward Sadio Mane and coach Aliou Cisse
Image caption: Senegal beat five-time world champions Brazil 4-2 in a friendly in June last year, with Sadio Mane scoring twice

As for their Afcon title defence, concerns have been raised about the fact that some of Senegal’s key players now ply their trade in Saudi Arabia, with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, captain Kalidou Koulibaly and talisman Sadio Mane all drawn there.

Previously Cisse had refused to select players from the Saudi Pro League because of its low quality in comparison to Europe’s top flights.

“We showed we were capable of winning the title when we had players in the major European championships,” Cisse said.

“Now we also must show we can win it with players who play in Saudi Arabia.”

Diouf is bullish about Senegal’s chances of retaining the trophy, and says former Liverpool and Bayern Munich forward Mane “wants to show everyone he is far from finished”.

“We are the best team in Africa and we don’t have to fear anything,” the 42-year-old added.

“We have so much quality and I see the players are still hungry. The mix we have between the leaders of this team and the young boys is unbelievable.

“The only way we cannot win this Africa Cup of Nations is [by] not thinking we are the best.”

And Mane, who netted the winning spot-kick in the final against Egypt in Cameroon just under two years ago, knows the effect taking the trophy back to Dakar once more could have.

“Winning the Afcon was the best trophy I have ever won in my life and coming to do it again will be special and a big achievement,” he told Caf Online.

“Winning the Afcon will [have] a big impact for our football because we have won all the other categories, which is great for the country.”

2023 AFCON: Senegal get defence off to winning start against The Gambia https://www.Adomonline.com/2023-afcon-senegal-get-defence-off-to-winning-start-against-the-gambia/ Mon, 15 Jan 2024 17:48:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2342234 Holders Senegal began their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with victory over 10-man underdogs The Gambia.

Pape Gueye gave the Teranga Lions the ideal start, collecting Sadio Mane’s pass to fire in a fourth-minute opener from inside the penalty area.

Cardiff City midfielder Ebou Adams was dismissed for The Gambia for an off-the-ball challenge just before half-time.

Lamine Camara doubled Senegal’s lead with a low finish after the break and curled in a classy third from distance.

With Cameroon facing Guinea in the other Group C match on Monday (17:00 GMT), Senegal’s fourth win of a five-match unbeaten run gave Aliou Cisse’s side early control of the group as they kept a fifth successive clean sheet.

The Gambia, whose Fifa ranking of 126th is the lowest of any team involved in the tournament in the Ivory Coast, threatened first when Edouard Mendy beat away Alasana Manneh’s fierce left-footed attempt from distance.

After Gueye’s opener, Habib Diallo also went close for Senegal, while Musa Barrow and Ali Sowe sent first-half efforts wide for The Gambia.

Despite Adams’ dismissal, via the video assistant referee, in first-half stoppage time, the underdogs almost equalised early in the second period but for a flying Mendy save to deny Barrow.

After Camara doubled Senegal’s advantage, Gambia goalkeeper Baboucarr Gaye produced a fine stop to prevent Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson from scoring off the bench, and Ismail Jakobs also fired wide from a tight angle.

Camara’s second owed much to a flourish of trickery from Iliman Ndiaye on the right, as he demonstrated masterful control to toy with his markers and angle a low pass back to the Metz midfielder, whose right-footed strike from outside the box arced over Gaye and into the far corner of the net.

Senegal will return to Yamoussoukro’s Charles Konan Banny Stadium to meet Cameroon in their second group-stage match on Friday (17:00 GMT).

Tom Saintfiet’s Gambia will attempt to end a run of three successive defeats against Guinea – the team they beat to reach the quarter-finals against the odds at Afcon 2021 – in the subsequent game at the same venue (20:00 GMT).

How Senegal Qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations:

By securing a 1-0 victory on the field of Mozambique, Senegal clinched qualification for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cote d’Ivoire 2023, with two matchdays to spare in the qualifying campaign.

Player to Watch: Sadio Mane

A notable absentee from the FIFA World Cup, Qatar 2022, Sadio Mané, seeking redemption, will undoubtedly be the player to watch during this tournament.

The Bambali native is a forward who excels in exploiting space behind opponents, being quicker than defenders and showcasing exceptional technical ability.

Capable of lightning-fast accelerations, he is one of the fastest attackers globally. Former Senegal coach Alain Giresse, speaking to Eurosport about Sadio Mané, said, “In his game, everything is spontaneous. He has a very good football intelligence. He knows how to read the game. It’s the type of player capable of quickly analyzing a situation and finding the solution.”

Coach: Aliou Cisse

Aliou Cissé is primarily a leader of men. The Ziguinchor native aims for a third continental final with the Lions of Teranga.

An advocate for the importance of psychological aspects and a winning mentality inherited from his playing years under Bruno Metsu, Cissé emphasizes an offensive style of play.

His strategy revolves around playing in the opponent’s half for as long as possible, supported by a solid defensive foundation, demanding much in ball distribution, in a game that combines possession, construction, and extremely fast counters led by wide midfielders tasked with stretching the play.

Boat carrying 200 people from Senegal missing https://www.Adomonline.com/boat-carrying-200-people-from-senegal-missing/ Mon, 10 Jul 2023 09:55:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2270425 Spanish rescuers are searching waters off the Canary Islands for a boat carrying at least 200 African migrants who went missing more than a week ago.

The aid group Walking Borders says the fishing boat sailed from Kafountine, a coastal town in southern Senegal that is roughly 1,700km (1,057 miles) from Tenerife.

The group says many children are on board, Spain’s Efe news agency reports.

Two similar boats carrying dozens more people are also said to be missing.

The boat carrying about 200 people left Kafountine on 27 June, heading for the Canary Islands.

Spain’s maritime rescue service told Efe that a plane had joined the search.

There are few details about the other two boats. Reuters news agency quoted Helena Maleno of Walking Borders as saying that one has about 65 people on board, the other up to 60, which would bring the total number of people missing across the three boats to more than 300.

The news comes just weeks after Europe saw one of its worst Mediterranean migrant shipwrecks when an overcrowded trawler sank off the Greek coast.

At least 78 people were confirmed drowned, but the UN reported that up to 500 were still missing.

The voyage from West Africa to the Canary Islands is among the most dangerous routes for migrants, not least because they usually sail in simple dugout fishing boats that are easily tossed by powerful Atlantic currents.

Last year at least 559 people died at sea attempting to reach the Spanish islands, the UN’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) says. The death toll for 2021 was 1,126.

The IOM quotes Spain’s Interior Ministry as saying 15,682 people arrived irregularly in the Canary Islands in 2022, a decrease of 30% compared to 2021.

“Despite the year-to-year decrease, flows along this dangerous route since 2020 remain high compared to prior years,” the IOM says.

Sadio Mane tips Ghana to win 2023 AFCON https://www.Adomonline.com/sadio-mane-tips-ghana-to-win-2023-afcon/ Tue, 04 Jul 2023 21:05:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2268478 Senegal attacker, Sadio Mane, believes Ghana is among the favourites to win the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that will be held in Ivory Coast next year.

The four-time African champions are yet to secure qualification for the tournament.

The Black Stars were presented with a chance to confirm their place in the tournament in the matchday five games against Madagascar.

However, Ghana were held to a goalless game. The result means the Black Stars must avoid defeat in their final match against Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Despite their struggles in the qualification series, Mane who won the AFCON in 2021 with the Teranga Lions believes, Ghana can still be touted as one of the title contenders for the tournament.

“The AFCON is full of surprises, but we know the usual best teams like the hosts, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Algeria and Cameroon,” he said, as quoted by Joueurs Cameroonais.

Meanwhile, Senegal, Algeria and Morocco are among 15 teams to have sealed a place in the competition.

Having won their fourth title in 1982, Ghana has strived to get another AFCON title but to no avail while losing three finals in 1992, 2010, and 2015 respectively.

Ghana was kicked out of the group stage in both the 2021 AFCON and the 2022 World Cup.

Senegal defeat Gambia to win TotalEnergies U-20 AFCON https://www.Adomonline.com/senegal-defeat-gambia-to-win-totalenergies-u-20-afcon/ Mon, 13 Mar 2023 14:41:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2227211 The Young Teranga Lions of Senegal beat their neighbours Gambia 2-0 on Saturday to win their first-ever TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Goals from forward Sulaymane Faye and midfielder Mamadou Camara in the Egyptian capital of Cairo were enough to secure Senegal’s victory over their arch-rivals.

The West African side qualified to Saturday’s final with a hundred per cent record winning all their matches without conceding a goal.

The Young Teranga Lions were playing their fourth TotalEnergies U-20 AFCON final having finished runners-up in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Malick Daf’s side have followed in the footsteps of the senior Teranga Lions, the Beach Soccer national team and the home-based national team in winning continental glory over the last year.

The Young Teranga Lions started better at the Cairo International Stadium with their direct approach causing the Young Scorpions problems at the back.

The Young Teranga Lions broke the deadlock after six minutes through Sulaymane Faye’s header from a cross down the right channel.

The Gambian defense failed to deal with Pape Diallo’s cross which allowed Faye to head into an unguarded goal.

The Young weathered the early setback to keep possession with Alieu Gibba and Mahmud Bajo

Lamine Camara fired a shot from distance which Pa Ebou Dampha parried towards the inrushing Sulaymane Faye who failed to score on 28 minutes.

Pa Ebou Dampha made himself big in front of the CF Talavera forward who couldn’t add to his tally.

The Young Scorpions came from the break seeking to get back into the match but were too strong in defense for the Young Scorpions.

Senegal doubled their lead ten minutes after the restart through RS Berkane midfielder Mamadou Camara. The towering Mamadou Camara guided home a corner to beat the helpless Pa Ebou Dampha.

The Young Teranga Lions dominated possession in the opening exchanges of the second period with Lamine Camara and Mamadou Camara pulling the strings for Malick Daf’s side.

The Gambia coach Abdoulie Bojang made a double substitution bringing in Mansour Mbye and Muhamed Sawaneh for Bailo Bah and Modou Marong.

The change added more firepower to the ineffective Young Scorpions attack. Mbye played in Kajally Drammeh on the left side of the Gambian to free Cape Town winger whose delivery into the area was cleared for a corner.

Senegal captain Samba Diallo twice came close to extending their lead against their neighbours. The Dinamo Kyiv youngster saw his half-volley agonizingly miss the target before blocking Alagie Saine’s clearance towards the Gambian goal.

Substitute Mouhamed Gueye hit the Young Scorpions’ post with a ferocious effort in stoppage time. The US Goree midfielder was played in just outside the Gambian box to strike against the woodwork.

The WAFU-A champions held on to secure their first-ever TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Senegal named true home of jollof rice over Ghana, Nigeria https://www.Adomonline.com/senegal-named-true-home-of-jollof-rice-over-ghana-nigeria/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 11:34:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2208152 The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially recognised Senegal as the origin of Jollof rice, also known as Ceebu jën in Senegal.

This settles a long-standing debate between West African nations Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal.

The dish, which is a staple in West African cuisine, is made of rice and fish, accompanied by vegetables and sometimes tomatoes.

According to research by The Conversation Africa, the origins of Jollof rice can be traced back to the entrenchment of colonial rule in West Africa between 1860 and 1940.

During this period, French colonizers replaced food crops with broken rice imported from Indochina.

Over time, broken rice became more prized by the Senegalese than whole rice grain and the dish known as Ceebu jën was born.

The dish (jollof rice, called Ceebu jën in Senegal according to the Wolof spelling) has become a source of pride and cultural identity for the Senegalese and has been recognised as an intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO.

This certification is expected to positively impact the economy, particularly in tourism, agriculture, fishing and catering.

In addition to its cultural significance, Jollof rice is also closely linked to a particular way of life and the consumption of the dish is strongly linked to ceremonial events and the aesthetics of presentation and service.

The women of Saint Louis, a port city in northern Senegal, are known for their remarkable know-how in this area and have been credited with adding finesse and elegance to the dish.

The Senegalese version of Jollof rice, Ceebu jën, is now officially recognised by UNESCO as an intangible heritage of humanity, putting an end to the ongoing debate over its origins and solidifying Senegal’s claim as the true home of Jollof rice.

Morocco tops Africa in FIFA ranking after World Cup exploits https://www.Adomonline.com/morocco-tops-africa-in-fifa-ranking-after-world-cup-exploits/ Thu, 22 Dec 2022 18:50:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2199133 Morocco’s national team has overtaken The Teranga Lions of Senegal to become the best African side in the recent and final FIFA Ranking for the year 2022.

Walid Regragui’s men are the number-one-ranked team in Africa after their impressive performance at the just-ended Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Atlas Lions reached the last four of the World Cup becoming the first and only African nation to ever reach the Semi Final in the history of the world’s greatest International football competition

To become the first African side to reach the Semi Final, Morocco beat 2010 winners Spain in the Round of 16 and edged past Portugal in the last 8 of the competition.

The Atlas Lions beat Belgium and Canada after drawing with Croatia in their opening group game.

Despite their impeccable run to the semi-final and the third-place playoff, Morocco fell short to Croatia and finished fourth in the competition.

Morocco was ranked 22nd in the World and 2nd in Africa in November before this year’s Mondial in Qatar.

The Atlas Lions are now ranked number one in Africa and 11th in the World and have moved 11 places up following their impressive World Cup campaign.

Regragui’s men end the year as the national team with the biggest move by points (108.85) and also the biggest move by places (11).

2022 World Cup: Senegal becomes first African country to secure last 16 berth https://www.Adomonline.com/2022-world-cup-senegal-becomes-first-african-country-to-secure-last-16-berth/ Tue, 29 Nov 2022 18:36:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2189862 Kalidou Koulibaly’s superb volley earned Senegal a place in the World Cup knock-out stages for just the second time as they beat Ecuador 2-1.

The Chelsea defender’s second half strike, just two minutes after his side had conceded, was enough to secure second spot in Group A, behind the Netherlands, as they picked up a thoroughly deserved victory.

With a place in the round-of-16 at stake for both teams started quickly, there was a frantic and lively start to the game, although it was The Lions who had the better chances as Idrissa Gueye blasted wide, before Boulaye Dia somehow failed to hit the target from close range.

Given the attacking prowess on display at both ends of the field, it was a surprise that it took until the 44th minute for the deadlock to be broken, with Ismaila Sarr, who had earlier past the post, stroking a penalty into the bottom corner after being bundled over in the box by Piero Hincapie.

Ecuador flung on a string of attacking players after the break as they desperately searched for a way back into the game, and they duly equalised on 68-minutes when Felix Torres’ near post flick-on was met by Moises Caicedo, who tapped into a practically empty net.

That swung the emphasis back on Senegal to find a goal, and within seconds they were back ahead as Kalidou Koulibaly volleyed home from close range after Idrissa Gueye’s free-kick wasn’t cleared.

Senegal now go through to the round-of-16, where they could face England or Wales, depending on the result of tonight’s clash.

Qatar will be eliminated if the Netherlands win or draw against Ecuador in the other Group A match later on Friday – the first time a host nation will have been knocked out after just two games in the tournament’s history.

The Africa Cup of Nations champions were by far the better team in the first period, and their play was rewarded four minutes before the break, as Boulaye Dia capitalised on a defensive error from Qatar’s Boualem Khoukhi to slot the ball past Meshaal Barsham to give his nation the lead.

Then, three minutes after the restart, Aliou Cisse’s side doubled their advantage. Famara Diedhiou reacted quickest at the near post to head in Ismail Jakobs’ corner.

Qatar then got a goal back 12 minutes from time to score their first of the tournament, as substitute Mohammed Muntari headed in Ismail Mohammad’s cross from the right.

However, Senegal sealed the victory in the 84th minute, as Iliman Ndiaye’s cut-back into the centre of the box was well finished by Bamba Dieng.

2022 World Cup: Gakpo and Klaassen strike late as Netherlands beat Senegal https://www.Adomonline.com/2022-world-cup-gakpo-and-klaassen-strike-late-as-netherlands-beat-senegal/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 18:33:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2186626 Late goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen were enough to give the Netherlands a crucial 2-0 win over Senegal in their World Cup opener, sending the Oranje level with Ecuador on top of Group A.

Just as a flat second half looked to be fizzling out, Gakpo leapt to meet a beautifully weighted Frenkie de Jong cross and head into an empty net, with Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy caught in no-man’s land.

De Jong’s assist made up for an error in the first half, when he squandered a great chance while one-on-one with Mendy.

Senegal twice tested debutant Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert after the break, but they were unable to find a breakthrough in the absence of injured star man Sadio Mane.

The Netherlands were also missing their key forward, Memphis Depay, but he made a surprise appearance from the bench in the second half, his first appearance since picking up an injury in September.

And he was involved in the 99th-minute goal that sealed the result, when Depay’s shot was limply parried by Mendy and stuck in on the rebound by fellow substitute Klaassen.

The African champions open their campaign against Group A opponents the Netherlands on Monday (16:00 GMT).

Bayern Munich forward Mane will miss the tournament due to a knee injury.

“We are not just talking about Senegalese people but people around the world and the whole football family is saddened,” said Cisse.

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk said he spoke to his former Liverpool team-mate Mane.

“As a friend I just wanted to know how he was. I feel sad for him. I know how hard he worked for this and he wants to be important for Senegal,” he added.

“He has been important in the last few years especially. It is tough. Obviously he will be a big miss for them. Hopefully we can benefit a little bit from that.”

World Cup 2022: Senegal forward Sadio Mane ruled out with leg injury https://www.Adomonline.com/world-cup-2022-senegal-forward-sadio-mane-ruled-out-with-leg-injury/ Thu, 17 Nov 2022 19:47:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2185258 Senegal forward Sadio Mane has been ruled out of the World Cup as he requires surgery on a knee injury he sustained playing for Bayern Munich.

On Tuesday, Senegal’s football federation said Mane, 30, would miss their “first games” at the tournament.

But a further MRI scan was completed on Thursday that showed surgical intervention is needed.

Mane was forced off during Bayern’s Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen on 8 November.

Senegal start their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on Monday. The West Africans are in Group A with games against hosts Qatar (25 November) and Ecuador (29 November) to follow.

Two-time African Footballer of the Year Mane is Senegal’s talisman, having scored the winning penalty when the Teranga Lions became continental champions for the first time in February, defeating Egypt in a shoot-out in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Within two months Mane had repeated the feat, netting the decisive spot-kick as Senegal beat Egypt – in a game that again pitted him against then Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah – on penalties in a play-off to qualify for Qatar.

The Bayern Munich forward was named in the Teranga Lions squad for Qatar despite being forced off in a club game last week.

The German champions said the 30-year-old had an injury “to his right fibula”, but Senegal coach Aliou Cisse said Mane does not need an operation.

The West Africans begin their Group A campaign against the Netherlands on Monday, with games against hosts Qatar (25 November) and Ecuador (29 November) to follow.

In Bayern Munich’s penultimate game before the World Cup, Mane was substituted after just 21 minutes when he appeared to hurt his leg during his side’s 6-1 win at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann said he had an x-ray after suffering a knock to the tibia.

Senegal begin their World Cup campaign on November 21 against the Netherlands, and Mane will be crucial in their hopes of emerging from a group that also includes host nation Qatar and Ecuador.

A kind draw on paper means expectations are high, in what is arguably one of the most open groups at the tournament.

Mane is a national icon after scoring the winning spot-kick in a penalty shootout win over Egypt to secure Senegal a first Africa Cup of Nations title last year.

He made another vital contribution from 12 yards out and repeated his feat against Egypt once again, scoring in a second shootout with the Pharaohs in March send his country to the World Cup.

His exploits at international level remain unsurpassed, and he became the country’s all-time leading goalscorer with a hat-trick of Benin in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in June.

The Lions of Teranga are managed by Aliou Cisse, who captained the side at the 2002 World Cup where they reached the quarter-finals and recorded an incredible 1-0 win over reigning champions France.

Cisse’s men have other star quality at their disposal, which includes Chelsea duo Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly, but Mane is undoubtedly their talisman.

Three medics arrested over childbirth deaths https://www.Adomonline.com/three-medics-arrested-over-childbirth-deaths/ Fri, 02 Sep 2022 13:03:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2158013 Three health workers in Senegal have been arrested after a pregnant woman and her baby died allegedly because of a botched Caesarean section.

A health union official said a gynaecologist, an anaesthetist and a nurse were being questioned over potential negligence.

Senegalese media say the heavily pregnant woman died after losing a lot of blood.

Her baby died as a result of injuries sustained during the operation.

The Senegalese Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (ASGO) defended the medical team and criticised the arrests as “wrongful”.

In a statement quoted by the AFP news agency, it said the team had taken “the appropriate decision” for the woman and her baby.

Last year President Macky Sall described Senegal’s health system as obsolete and ordered a national review of neonatal services.

It followed a national outcry over the death of a woman in labour – in a case in which three Senegalese midwives who were involved were found guilty of not assisting someone in danger.

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse challenges Napoli over Nations cup threat https://www.Adomonline.com/senegal-coach-aliou-cisse-challenges-napoli-over-nations-cup-threat/ Tue, 09 Aug 2022 16:14:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2147421 Senegal coach Aliou Cisse says international football – and the Africa Cup of Nations in particular – should never play second fiddle to club commitments and has ‘challenged’ Napoli not to buy African players.

The 46-year-old’s comments come after Napoli owner and president Aurelio de Laurentiis said the Italian club will avoid signing any more African players unless they agree not to play in the biennial tournament.

“A football player can play for 12 teams, say, but will only have one national team,” Cisse told BBC Sport Africa.

“Clubs will never be above our flag and our national teams. And every Senegalese who plays in Europe, wherever he will be, if he is competent I will call him to defend the colours of the nation.

“I have a lot of respect for (De Laurentiis) but I challenge them to try to not recruit African players.”

The timing of the Nations Cup – traditionally played in January and February – has led to repeated disputes with European clubs forced to release players in the middle of the season.

Napoli lost defender Kalidou Koulibaly – who captained Senegal to triumph in the 2021 Nations Cup staged this year in Cameroon – and midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa to call-ups for the tournament last season and the pair missed six club games.

‘Unacceptable remarks’

The Confederation of African Football (Caf), the continent’s governing body, said it was “appalled” by the “irresponsible and unacceptable remarks” made by De Laurentiis, and called on European counterpart Uefa to open a disciplinary investigation against the 73-year-old.

“Are we to assume (De Laurentiis) is going to include similar restrictive conditions to players from South America, Asia and other confederations prohibiting them from playing in their continental competitions?” a Caf statement read.

Koulibaly spent eight years at Napoli before joining Chelsea last month and responded to De Laurentiis’ comments by saying it is important to “respect everybody”.

“If he thinks that the team can play without African players, it’s up to him,” the centre-back said. “But I think not everybody has the same idea as him in the club, because I know their supporters and they don’t think like this.”

“Obviously, clubs are fearful about the Nations Cup, but it is important for our country and for our continent,” added coach Cisse.

“The Napoli president is an important figure. I met him once and just by his handshake, you could tell he is a serious man and honest man.”

Cisse wants ‘good collaboration’ with clubs

Cisse (right) was named as Africa’s men’s national coach of the year for 2021-22 last month

De Laurentiis said he would only sign African players in the future if they signed a waiver saying they would not appear at the Nations Cup – with the next finals scheduled for early 2024 in Ivory Coast.

Cisse has been in charge of Senegal since 2015, leading the Teranga Lions to back-to-back qualifications for the World Cup and a maiden continental title.

But the former Paris Saint-Germain player believes African countries are singled out by European clubs when their players are called up for international games.

“Why should the debate exist only when it comes to African players?” Cisse added.

“When a Brazilian is needed by his federation, there is no debate. And yet we are five hours away from Europe. In South America, they are 17-18 hours away from Europe – but there is no debate.

“Clubs should discuss and share ideas with these players to find the best solution to help both national teams and clubs.

“We aren’t fighting the clubs. I’ve spent seven years here, I have always tried to have a good collaboration with the clubs.”

Cisse says he experienced a negative attitude towards the Nations Cup when he travelled to one European club to convince a player to represent Senegal.

“I met the coach and the sporting director and then they told me, kindly, extremely politely, ‘Your competition is great but to be honest we don’t care. What we care about is to have this boy at the end of the season because he represents 25 million euros to play in the Champions League’,” he said.

“I can understand, I am not shocked at all. But they can understand that when the nation is within its rights, we are allowed to call [up] our players.

“They can believe what they want but they should let us organise things as we want.”

2023 AFCONQ: Mane scores late as Senegal maintain perfect start https://www.Adomonline.com/2023-afconq-mane-scores-late-as-senegal-maintain-perfect-start/ Wed, 08 Jun 2022 10:12:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2123542 Senegal star Sadio Mane scored a 98th-minute penalty in a 1-0 win over Rwanda to maintain the African champions’ perfect start to 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

The forward settled a drab encounter in the Senegalese capital Dakar when holding his nerve to drill home and finally break Rwanda’s resistance.

It is the second time this year the Liverpool forward, heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich, has converted a spot-kick deep into added time, after his 97th-minute winner against Zimbabwe in Senegal’s opening Nations Cup game in Cameroon.

Mane – who also scored the winning penalty in the Nations Cup final – is enjoyable a memorable spell after netting a hat-trick in Saturday’s win over Benin to become the Teranga Lions’ record goalscorer.

Despite playing in Dakar in what was actually a nominal home tie for Rwanda, the Nations Cup winners – Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and PSG’s Idrissa Gueye among them – struggled for form.

Senegal have played their opening two qualifiers at home, with Rwanda reversing Tuesday’s match to enable them to continue renovations on their Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

The Teranga Lions are five points clear in Group L after just two games, but Benin and Mozambique – who have played just once – meet on Wednesday.

11 newborn babies die in hospital fire https://www.Adomonline.com/11-newborn-babies-die-in-hospital-fire/ Thu, 26 May 2022 08:57:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2118422 Eleven newborn babies have died in a hospital fire in the western city of Tivaouane in Senegal, the country’s president has said.

The fire at Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital was in the maternity department, President Macky Sall tweeted.

Initial reports suggest the fire was caused by a short circuit, according to Senegalese politicians.

Three babies were saved from the fire, said the city’s mayor, Demba Diop Sy.

The fire spread very quickly and emergency services were still at the scene, Mr Sy told local media.

The hospital had been newly inaugurated, according to AFP, citing local media reports.

Senegal’s President Macky Sall said the fire was in the maternity department of the hospital

“To their mothers and their families, I express my deepest sympathy,” President Sall wrote in a tweet.

“This situation is very unfortunate and extremely painful,” Health Minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr said from Geneva, where he was attending a World Health Organization meeting.

He said an investigation was underway and he would be cutting his trip short to return to Senegal immediately.

The incident has sparked a wave of indignation on social media over the state of the country’s healthcare provision.

Opposition MP Mamadou Lamine Diallo criticised the government, tweeting: “More babies burned in a public hospital… This is unacceptable”.

A similar incident occurred in the northern town of Linguère last year, when four newborn babies were killed after a fire broke out at a hospital’s maternity ward. At the time, the mayor said there was an electrical fault in the air conditioning unit of the maternity ward.

The tragedy also follows a national outcry over the death of a woman in labour, Astou Sokhna, who died while reportedly begging for a Caesarean during her 20-hour labour ordeal. Her unborn child also died.

Senegal midwives go on trial over mother’s death https://www.Adomonline.com/senegal-midwives-go-on-trial-over-mothers-death/ Fri, 06 May 2022 07:09:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2111826 Six midwives have gone on trial in Senegal following the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child in a public hospital in a case which caused a national outcry.

They have been charged with failing to assist a person in danger.

Astou Sokhna died last month after reportedly spending 20 hours in labour.

Her pleas to doctors to carry out a Caesarean were ignored because it had not been planned in advance, local media reported.

The lawyer for the six accused women said his clients felt victimised. In recent weeks, health workers have gone on strike in defence of the midwives, saying that they should not be prosecuted.

Ms Sokhna, who was in her 30s, was nine months’ pregnant when she went to hospital in the northern town of Louga.

But the hospital refused her request to have a Caesarean on the grounds that the operation had not been scheduled, and threatened to send her away her if she kept insisting on the procedure, according to local press reports. Her husband lodged a legal complaint.

Reports said that doctors refused Astou Sokhna’s request for a Caesarean

The authorities responded to the death by dismissing the director of the hospital.

Health Minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sall said that it could have been avoided with more vigilance.

Ordering an investigation, President Macky Sall said on social media that “failure will not be tolerated”. The results of the investigation have not yet been released.

The circumstances of the deaths of the mother and child sparked an outpouring of complaints on social media with people describing the deficiencies of the public health system.

The strike by the National Association of Midwives and other unions was also linked to demands for better working conditions and the enforcement of wage agreements.

Death during childbirth is a leading cause of mortality in Africa.

In Senegal, the government says that rates have been falling in recent years with current figures around 156 deaths per 100,000 live births – down from 392 four years ago.

The UN goals is for countries to have fewer than 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030.
