According to him, the initiative aims to boost the local economy, improve livelihoods, and protect coastal communities like Sege from the damaging effects of sea erosion.

During a campaign visit, Dr. Bawumia expressed hope that the sea defense would safeguard the coastline and residents from the ongoing threat of tidal waves and erosion, while the mini harbour would offer opportunities for fishermen and traders, enhancing trade and transportation in the area.

“…we need a mini harbor. So, we are going to work on bringing a mini harbor to Sege for you. That is a very, very important thing. Of course, the roads also need to be addressed, as there are issues with roads in this area, and we are going to tackle some of the problems you have already raised. And, of course, it is very important that we also work on the sea defence for this area.”

Dr Bawumia noted that, unlike the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer who would serve only one term, he has the potential for two terms, which means he would be held accountable over a longer period.

He noted that with this in mind, he promised to work diligently for the people.

“If I come back in four years, I’ll have to give an account. What have I done with the sea defence? What have I done with the premixed fuel? What have I done with the roads? I will give an account. The former president will not have to come back to give an account, but I will. I’m going to work very hard to deliver for you, because I have to give an account. I’ll work very hard to make sure I deliver.”

Akufo-Addo commissions Africa’s biggest salt mine in Sege https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-commissions-africas-biggest-salt-mine-in-sege/ Wed, 30 Aug 2023 19:18:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2289233 The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, 30th August 2023, commissioned the Electrochem Salt Mine in Sege, in the Ada West district of the Greater Accra Region.

The Mine, operated by the McDan Group, currently has the capacity to produce some 650,000 metric tons of salt per annum.

The Mine is expected to increase its productive capacity to one million metric tons in 2024, and to two million metric tons by 2027, making it the biggest salt-producing facility in Africa.

Addressing the gathering at the event, President Akufo-Addo noted that for some 54 years, successive governments have tried, without success, to harness the full value of the Songhor Lagoon.

“I am glad that under the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Songhor Lagoon is being brought into full production for the benefit of residents of Ada and citizens of the entire nation,” he said.

According to President Akufo-Addo, “The man who is to receive the plaudits for the brilliance of what we are witnessing today is the courageous, excellent entrepreneur, Mr. Daniel McKorley, aka McDan. This is the first time in recent history that an indigenous Ghanaian businessman owns one of the biggest extractive industries in Africa. He is a shining example of what determination and perseverance can produce. Ayekoo!!”

Recounting a news item he came across in the run-up to the 2008 elections, the President stated that he was startled by the report which suggested that the Federal Republic of Nigeria was in the process of importing two billion dollars worth of salt from Brazil.

“You can imagine the thoughts that were running through my mind. Think with me for a moment about the prospects of Ghana selling $2 billion worth of salt to Nigeria and the ripple effects the sale of such a simple commodity, which Nigeria and, indeed, many other countries in West Africa import from other continents, can have on our economy,” he added.

As an advocate for value-addition activities since coming into office in January 2017, evidenced in the implementation of the 1-District-1-Factory policy, President Akufo-Addo was delighted that Electrochem is in the process of constructing a salt refinery, in addition to a Port not too far away from here for the purpose of exporting refined salt products to the wider African market.

With Accra serving as the headquarters of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area, the President was confident that the expected revenues of some $1 billion to the company would be surpassed.

He extended the appreciation of the government and people of Ghana to the Paramount Chief of the Ada Traditional Area, Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku III, his Chiefs, and the people of Ada for the support given to the success of the project.

President Akufo-Addo also took notice of the request by McDan in his speech requesting for the construction of some major road projects leading to the mine.

He assured that “I will put these requests before the Minister for Roads and Highways, and ensure that he does his best to construct the roads. I intend to take a personal interest in them.”

The President reiterated his belief that not only is Ghana the best place for doing business in West Africa, but also the preferred destination for a perfect blend of mineral resource potential, stable regulatory environment, favourable fiscal regime, and socially responsive mining in Africa.

“In spite of our present challenges, I maintain that it is an exciting time to be in Ghana, and do business in the country. The Akufo-Addo government is determined to make Ghana an example of rapid economic growth within the context of a well-developed market economy, where the private sector does not only survive, but actually thrives,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

Suspended NPP parliamentary candidate reacts https://www.adomonline.com/suspended-npp-parliamentary-candidate-reacts/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 07:30:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2259597 The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2020 parliamentary candidate for the Sege Constituency in Accra, Eunice Lasi, has denied claims that she disrupted the party’s unity walk organized by the Constituency Executive Committee last month.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, she responded to her suspension by stating that the “supposed unity walk” seemed partisan, as most members of the executive committee and some party patrons were wearing the attire of her contender.

Ms. Lasi, who had organized a music team to join the exercise, insisted that “my intention of playing that music was not to destroy the exercise.”

She said all she did was organize her people and make them comfortable by creating an atmosphere of belonging.

“I don’t have a problem with who likes me or not, but it was a unity walk, so there was no need for them to be partisan. I did not disrupt the walk—they deceived the public,” she added.

However, Prince Akoto, the NPP Sege Constituency Secretary, said the party’s constitution did not condone such conduct, which is why the party’s leadership in the constituency decided to indefinitely suspend her at its meeting.

Ms Lasi was in a statement signed and issued by the NPP Sege constituency chairman, Augustus A. Adjaottor, on Monday suspended indefinitely for misconduct.

“Pursuant to Article 4(4)(2) of the Party’s Constitution, the CEC held a meeting on 4th June 2023 and decided to suspend you indefinitely following the recommendation of the Constituency Disciplinary Committee. The CEC has noticed with much worry your misconduct (Article 4(7) is referred to) both on social media and during party-organized activities, either personally or through your agents and assigns.

“On May 1, 2023, the CEC decided to organise a walk as a matter of strategy to boost the confidence of the party base. You chose to attend the event with your own sound system with the intention to disrupt the constituency-organised program in violation of Article 3(5). Specifically, you breached your duty to protect the unity of the party, abide by and publicly uphold the decisions of the party, and to participate fully in the activities of the Party and ensure that the local organs of the party work effectively,” the party said in the statement.

The party also noted that the decision to suspend Ms Lasi was also because of her consistent “insulting outburst on social media, specifically shared on various WhatsApp platforms in the constituency” which has caused “internal apathy among the party base.”

The statement further disclosed that Ms Lasi blatantly disregarded the caution of the constituency chairman and secretary to tone down her “disruptive conduct” which forced the constituency to suspend her.
