The conviction follows his guilty plea to the charge of stealing when he appeared before the court on March 5, 2025.

Chief Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey, prosecuting, said Tahiru is a Nigerien who resides at Fitter Line, a suburb of Ashaiman.

He explained that on February 26, 2025, the Gbetsile District Police were on their usual night patrol duty when they spotted him holding a black polythene bag containing some heavy items.

The police became suspicious and apprehended him. Upon searching the bag, they discovered six stopcocks, six safety valves, and one return valve, valued at GH¢3,250, belonging to Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

The prosecutor stated that the police subsequently arrested Tahiru and sent him to the Afienya Police Station. During interrogation, he admitted to stealing the items from some residents in the area.

He was therefore charged with stealing and placed in custody before being processed for court.

Meanwhile, Dr. Samuel Eson, the Regional Chief Manager for the Tema Region of GWL, expressed gratitude to the court for the judgment. He noted that the company has recently faced a rise in meter theft, which has negatively impacted its operations.

He appealed to residents to be vigilant and report such suspected individuals to the police.

He also cautioned scrap dealers and others engaged in stealing GWL installations to desist from the act, warning that those caught would face the full rigors of the law.

Mohammed Salifu, a 30-year-old scrap dealer, who stabbed a carpenter in the chest at Makola Market, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Salifu is alleged to have committed the offence following a confrontation with the complainant, Ola Juwon, over scraps.

He has been charged with causing harm. He pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Mr Isaac Addo, admitted Salifu to bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties, after his counsel had argued for bail.

It further ordered the prosecution to comply with the rules of disclosures and adjourned the matter to September 25, 2024.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye Okuffo, told the court that the complainant, Ola Juwon, is a carpenter residing in Okaishie, Accra, while Salifu lives at the Komkomba market, Accra.

According to Chief Inspector Okuffo, on July 28, 2024, at 1230 hours, Juwon got rewarded with aluminium scraps for the service he did and packed them for sale.

According to the prosecution, Juwon discovered that the scrap metal he collected had gone missing.

The court heard that Juwon later met Salifu in Rawlings Park with some scrap metal.

The prosecution said Juwon suspected the scrap metals were his and confronted Salifu.

Salifu engaged Juwon in a fight, grabbing a pair of scissors and stabbing him in the left side of his chest.

The prosecution said people were attracted but they remained helpless as they were unable to separate Salifu and the complainant.

Some witnesses, however, intervened and collected the pair of scissors from Salifu.

Prosecution said Salifu was rushed to the Police Hospital and later transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.

According to prosecution, the complainant was discharged two weeks ago.

Scrap dealer jailed for stabbing security man https://www.adomonline.com/scrap-dealer-jailed-for-stabbing-security-man/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 20:14:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2372189 The Tema Circuit Court ‘B’ has sentenced a 27-year-old scrap dealer and herbal medicine peddler, Abdulai Sanusi, to three years imprisonment in hard labour for stabbing a security guard with a pair of scissors.

The court, presided over by Mrs Klorkor Okai-Mills, handed Sanusi, a Nigerien, the sentence after pleading guilty to the charge of causing harm to the victim Mr Vincent Akpotaka on his left rib and back.

Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecutor Inspector Jacob Kuubal, said the victim was a security guard at Sentuo Oil Refinery in the Tema Industrial Area, who in January 2024, bought some of Sanusi’s medicine valued at Gh 50.00 on credit, promising to pay later.

He said on February 12, 2024, at about 18:30 hours, the convict went to the victim at his abode on the premises of his workplace and demanded for his money.

However, the complainant explained to him that he did not have cash on him as his money was on his mobile money wallet.

He said the victim claimed it would be difficult to withdraw cash because the mobile money agents in the area had already closed.

The victim therefore instructed the convict to come back in the morning for his money, but it did not go down well with him, leading to an exchange of words between the two.

It developed into a scuffle during which Sanusi removed the scissors he had concealed and stabbed the complainant under his left rib and his back, resulting in deep-cut wounds.

The prosecutor added that Sanusi took to his heels after he saw the victim bleeding profusely from the deep-cut wounds he inflicted on him, but he was pursued by witnesses, arrested and handed over to the Lube Oil Police Station, where he was cautioned.

He said a police medical report was issued to the complainant to attend any government hospital for treatment, indicating that on February 18, 2024, at about 20:00 hours, a surgery was conducted on him at the Tema General Hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

He said the police had earlier visited the victim at the hospital and interacted with Dr Iddi Sumaili on February 14, 2024, at about 09:15 hours, who explained that the omentum tissue under the skin of the stomach of the complainant was out and visible in the wound, and needed a surgery to check if any of his internal organs were damaged.

Inspector Kuubal said the doctor said during the surgery it was detected that the victim sustained internal bleeding between the abdominal and pelvic cavities (hemoperitoneum), while his stomach lining was perforated.

He added that the victim, who was detained at the social welfare department of the hospital for his inability to pay his medical bills, had since been discharged after some benevolent people contributed and paid the bill.
