Sad: Boafri D/A basic school pupils forced to learn on bare floor https://www.adomonline.com/boafri-d-a-basic-school-forced-to-learn-on-bare-floor/ Thu, 17 Feb 2022 13:58:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2081435 Pupils of Boafri D/A Basic School in the Krachi Nchumuru District in the Oti Region are compelled to sit on the bare floor to learn due to lack of furniture.

The situation, according to parents and school management, is affecting teaching and learning activities in the school.

Adom News’ visit to the school proved that there isn’t a single chair at the Kindergarten (KG) where the infants sat on the bare floor with a few others sitting on kitchen stool and plastic chairs to study.

The lack of furniture isn’t the only challenge to the KG block as the primary pupils are also facing similar challenges, compelling school children to use their leisure time to prepare their own table and chairs for studies.

A unit classroom with its auxiliary facility has also been left abandoned after roofing whilst others battle with dilapidated classrooms for classwork.

Some community members, who spoke to Adom News’ reporter, Obrempongba Owusu, complained about their children’s uniforms being dirty as a result of lying and sitting on bare floor to write due to lack of furniture in the school.

The parents are not happy with this condition after several requests to the government and the district assembly to provide the school with furniture failed.

They, therefore, want the authorities or benevolent organisations to come to their aid by providing the school with furniture so that children can take their studies serious.

The school PTA Chairman, Francis Majoba, said the furniture challenge is affecting effective teaching and learning.

According to him, they have informed the District Assembly, but they are yet to attend to their concerns.

He, thus, called on benevolent individuals, NGO’s and the district assembly to assist the school with infrastructure to promote quality education in the area.

Couple arrested for selling ‘weed-laced’ cookies to school children [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/couple-arrested-for-selling-weed-laced-cookies-to-school-children-photos/ Tue, 20 Apr 2021 17:51:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1950284 Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested a couple for selling weed-laced cookies to school children.

The 300-level university student, Rhoda Agboje and her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Nwankwo, are both specialized in producing and selling drug cookies to school children and other unsuspecting members of the public in Abuja.

Spokesperson of the agency, Femi Babafemi, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, April 20, said narcotics agents with the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Command of the NDLEA have also launched a manhunt for another member of the syndicate involved in producing the cookies with Arizona, a highly psychoactive variant of cannabis; alcohol and rohypnol among other ingredients.

Babafemi said their lid was blown open following the arrest of Rhoda Agboje with four pieces of the drug cookies on Sunday, 18th April 2021.

She was arrested at the NNPC Cooperative estate, opposite Gaduwa estate in Abuja based on a complaint that she gave an unsuspecting young girl the cookies to eat. After eating the drug cookies, the girl lost her mind and could not sleep, making incoherent utterances due to the effects of the cookies,” the statement says.

Under interrogation, the prime suspect, Rhoda confessed she prepares the cookies with a friend and sells each pack of three pieces at N1, 500. A follow up operation in her boyfriend’s house led to the recovery of over 200 pieces of the drug cookies.

According to the Commander, FCT Command of the NDLEA, Mohammed Malami Sokoto, the boyfriend, Ifeanyi Nwankwo and all the equipment used for the production of the cookies were brought to the office for further investigation.

The suspect confirmed that she sells at parties and to unsuspecting members of the public, including school children that are the most vulnerable. The suspect also supplies some supermarkets and clubs in the FCT.

While commending officers and men of the FCT Command for unraveling the syndicate, Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) said what the syndicate was doing is not only criminal but equally unconscionable by deliberately luring school children into drugs under the cover of selling to them biscuits or cookies.

“I wish to draw the attention of parents to this new devious strategy to get children addicted to drug cookies and to urge them to remain vigilant while monitoring what their wards bring home from school or consume as snack”, Marwa stated on Tuesday.

Rihanna is giving bikes to girls in Malawi to help their education https://www.adomonline.com/rihanna-giving-bikes-girls-malawi-help-education/ Mon, 07 Aug 2017 06:09:46 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=366531 Rihanna is giving bikes to girls in Malawi to help them get an education.
It’s part of a new partnership between the singer’s Clara Lionel Foundation and Chinese bike-sharing company Ofo.
The campaign called 1 Km Action will fund scholarships to help hundreds of girls attend secondary schools in Malawi.

Those who qualify for a scholarship will receive bikes to make sure they get to school.
According to the foundation, there are approximately 4.6 million students across Malawi but only 8% of students complete secondary school.
One of the reasons for that is because of the poor transport links.

“I’m so happy about the Clara Lionel Foundation’s new partnership with Ofo because it will help so many young people around the world receive a quality education,” Rihanna said.
“And also help the young girls of Malawi get to school safely, cutting down those very long walks they make to and from school all alone.”
Rihanna has a reputation for being a humanitarian.
Through her foundation, which is named after her grandparents, she has focused on providing children with access to education in over 60 developing countries, giving priority to girls.

Search for children abducted from school in Nigeria https://www.adomonline.com/search-children-abducted-school-nigeria/ Mon, 29 May 2017 08:56:42 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=140591

Nigerian police are searching for six children abducted from their school on the outskirts of the main city, Lagos.

The abductors freed four other children after “profiling” their parents, police said, apparently referring to the fact that they were not regarded as wealthy.

The men came through a swampy forest bordering the state-run Model College school, and cut a hole in the fence to enter, police said.

Schools in Lagos have been hit by several kidnappings for ransom.

Four children were abducted from the same school in October 2016, and three from another school in Lagos in southern Nigeria in March this year. They were later freed.

Lagos police spokesman Olarinde Famous-Cole condemned the abductions as “dastardly” and said an operation was under way to rescue the girls and apprehend the kidnappers.

In north-eastern Nigeria, militant Islamist group Boko Haram has carried out a space of abductions since launching an insurgency in 2009, using girls as sex slaves, labourers and suicide bombers.

Don’t prevent children from speaking local languages – MP https://www.adomonline.com/dont-prevent-children-speaking-local-languages-mp/ Thu, 06 Apr 2017 06:31:03 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=64891 The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Eric Kwakye Darfour has called on the management of schools to desist from prohibiting the speaking of local languages in their schools.

According to him, the prohibition made it difficult for students and pupils to learn and appreciate their own language adding that most times they were prevented from speaking the language which identifies them as Ghanaians.

“Much attention is focused on the speaking and learning of foreign languages especially English to the detriment of our own,” he said

The minister said there was the need for managements of schools to come up with innovative ways of making pupils learn and speak their own languages well.

Mr Kwakye Darfour made the statements during the Nyasapo Festival organised by the Eastern regional branch of the Centre for National Culture.

The festival themed: ‘Ghana at 60: Exhibiting togetherness in our collective identity through the local language” sought to bring together students and pupils from different schools in the region to imbibe in them the ideals and affluent nature of the Ghanaian language.

Students and pupils from different schools in Koforidua displayed and performed through drama and recited poems in the local languages to depict the Ghanaian culture.

Mr Darfour noted that “it is not to say that, it is not good to speak other languages, but it is more convenient to be able to write, read and express one’s self fluently, as a result of which one can communicate in any other language excellently.”

He therefore stressed the need for students and pupils to learn to speak their own language to enable them to grow to understand each other and coordinate in future to ensure the development of the country.

. Advising the students and pupils, Mr Darfour urged them to eschew bad counsel and stick to good morals and courtesy with which success and higher heights could be reached.

The Regional Minister commended the Centre for National Culture for organising the festival and appealed to them to organise the festival at the regional level to enable students to perform in the various local languages in the region.

For his part, the Eastern Regional Director of the Centre for National Culture, Mr Stephen Sedofu appealed to the government and other stakeholders to come to the aid of the Centre and help it complete its building project.
