The 22-year-old Ghanaian was unable to clear the bar at 1.92m on her third attempt.

Yeboah, a two-time African champion, successfully cleared 1.83m on her second attempt and 1.88m on her third.

However, she fell short at 1.92m, a height below her personal best of 1.97m.

Paris Olympic Games: African champion Rose Yeboah jumps Friday https://www.adomonline.com/paris-olympic-games-african-champion-rose-yeboah-jumps-friday/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 00:44:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2428601 African women’s high jump champion Rose Yeboah will begin her Olympic journey on Friday.

Yeboah, who is Ghana’s first woman ever to qualify for the Olympic Games in women’s high jump, will compete at 8:15 am Ghana time.

She’s in Group A alongside women’s high jump record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine, who jumped higher than any woman in history, setting a world record of 2.10m at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in June. This has stamped her as the outright favourite for the Olympic gold medal in this year’s Olympics.

The Ghanaian would need to clear the bar at 1.97m, the height she jumped to secure a ticket to Paris for these games, if she’s to make the final on Friday.

She can also qualify for the final without necessarily meeting the standard qualification of 1.97m if she’s among the top 12 best jumpers after the first round.

Since breaking onto the scene in 2019, the 22-year-old has won back-to-back African Games and African Athletics Seniors Championships gold medals.

In the African Games in Rabat five years ago, she cleared the bar at 1.84m to win and defended it in Accra with a jump of 1.90m.

She won her first gold at the African Seniors Athletics Championships in Mauritius with a jump of 1.79m. A year ago, while a student at the University of Cape Coast, the youngster set a new national record at the FISU Games by clearing the bar at 1.94m, earning her another gold medal and qualifying her for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

She earlier won gold in the African University Games in Egypt.

In her last event before flying to Paris, Rose won gold at the Confederation of African Athletics Seniors Championships in Douala last month, clearing a height of 1.87m.

In her cabinet are six gold medals from four continental or global competitions.

She capped off that spectacular CV with a 1.97m in the NCAA to qualify for the Olympics, and she’s hoping to do better.

“Qualifying for the Olympics is such a great experience, and I am really happy to see myself there to compete for my country, Ghana,” she told JoySports.

“Looking at my performance at the NCAA, I feel like I will do much better since it’s going to be a competition among ourselves.

“Everyone should expect me to qualify for the finals and see myself on the podium. It will be such a great experience if at least I make it to the finals and get a medal,” she added.

Every height cleared by Rose was a record set by her and broken by herself.

Flying to Paris for the Olympics is a record, and she could be in contention for another record if she makes the final.

African Games: Rose Yeboah in pole position to qualify for Paris 2024 Olympics https://www.adomonline.com/african-games-rose-yeboah-in-pole-position-to-qualify-for-paris-2024-olympics/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 09:31:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2372691 Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah, the Ghanaian high jumper who won gold at the just-ended African Games, is in pole position to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

With three months to the start of the quadrennial affair, Ghanaians have been worried that no athlete has yet qualified in any sport.

Indeed, one of the main hopes of the African Games being hosted in Ghana was the fact that home support could spur some of the nation’s athletes to clock times, distances and heights that could propel them to Paris.

With the African Games ending on Saturday, Joy Sports’ analysis of the Olympic criteria suggests that barring seismic circumstances, the 22-year-old should be there.

The calculation

According to the Olympic Games criteria, 32 athletes are eligible to participate in the women’s high jump in Paris. To automatically qualify by entry standard, a mark of 1.97m has been set. This means that an athlete will have to jump 1.97m, at least between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, to get in. The second way to qualify is through rankings, ie, an athlete must amass a certain number of points.

As we speak, only ten athletes so far have hit the entry standard of 1.97m. The list of the ten athletes is below.

For athletes, the more recognized competitions they participate in, the better their chances of hitting the qualification mark or improving their rankings. This is why it was important for Yeboah to be in Accra for the Games. Once she did, two things happened: even though she jumped 1.90m, the height was good enough for a gold medal, but not good enough to qualify her to Paris by automatic entry.

However, her rankings shot up so much that she moved from 26th to 18th position.

Joy Sports understands that the chances of the Ghanaian not making it to Paris 2024 with 1189 points is extremely slim, considering that there are very few international championships available for other athletes to knock Yeboah out of the top 32 qualifiers.

Up next for her is the African Championships slated for Cameroon in June. If she is able to make it there, she could amass more points to further cement her place. She is also expected to take part in the NCAA outdoor season, where more points are up for grabs.

With all these factors considered, Yeboah is expected to be among the top 32 qualifiers in the world by June 30 to get her into the Olympic Games.

World Athletics Championships: Ghanaian athletes and officials denied Hungarian visas https://www.adomonline.com/world-athletics-championships-ghanaian-athletes-and-officials-denied-hungarian-visas/ Tue, 15 Aug 2023 13:09:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2283712 Ghanaian athletes, Sarfo Ansah and Rose Yeboah, will not participate in the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest after they were both denied visas by the Hungarian Embassy in Accra.

Newly-elected Ghana Athletics President, Bawa Fuseini, was also denied a visa to lead the team to the same competition.

Yeboah is the African Champion in the women’s high jump and just won gold at the World University Games in China with a new national record of 1.94m.

Ansah is a late replacement for the injured Benjamin Azamati and was expected to join Ghana’s 4x100m relay team.

Both athletes’ applications were submitted two weeks ago, following the late confirmation of their participation.

With accreditation from competition organizers, World Athletics, the visa issuance was expected to be a routine process, but on Monday, the Hungarian Embassy in Accra communicated to the team that visas for the two athletes had been refused.

Bawa Fuseini, Ghana Athletics’ President, was also denied a visa, but he will still be able to travel to Hungary for the competition because he possesses a French-issued Schengen visa, Joy Sports understands.

The rest of team Ghana is currently camping in France and will fly out to Budapest on Friday, ahead of the 10-day competition which starts on Saturday, August 19, 2023.

The team is led by Ghana’s 200m record holder, Joseph Paul Amoah (20.08s), who won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the country’s first since 1978.

Meanwhile, sprinter Sean Safo-Antwi’s campaign ended on day 1 after he missed out on the men’s 100m final, according to 3news.

The 31-year-old qualified for the semis with 10:28s in the heats, but only finished sixth (10.31s), missing out on the final.
