At 61, the rap icon stunned fans by defeating William Adom via submission in a thrilling Global World Championship bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

Though his age took a toll on him in the initial rounds, he swiftly gained momentum, holding his opponent in chokehold until he tapped out.

The electrifying event was graced by high-profile dignitaries, including Kimathi Rawlings, and attracted a massive crowd of both fight and music enthusiasts.

Reggie’s MMA journey may be new to many, but as he revealed in a pre-fight interview, his roots in martial arts run deep.

“If you’ve known me for over 50 years, you’d know I started martial arts before music. I was the youngest Shotokan brown belt and a two-time junior Taekwondo champion,” he shared.

His decision to enter the ring at his age, he said, was not only a personal challenge but a mission to inspire the youth and shine a spotlight on Ghana’s budding MMA scene.

“Every day is a risk, but this is a calculated one. My goal is to lend my celebrity to build MMA in Ghana and show that age shouldn’t stop anyone from chasing new goals.”

Despite initial skepticism, especially from his family, Reggie’s win has sparked a national conversation and inspired many to consider training and fitness.

10 essential Hiplife artistes: From godfather Reggie Rockstone to King Paluta https://www.adomonline.com/10-essential-hiplife-artistes-from-godfather-reggie-rockstone-to-king-paluta/ Wed, 21 Aug 2024 15:33:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2436940

In the 1990s, artists and producers from Accra merged the sound and aesthetic of American hip-hop with their Ghanaian sounds and culture.

The resulting genre, hiplife, significantly influenced the music coming from Ghana and the African continent.

Ghana has been home to some of the most recognizable musical exports from the African continent, contributing heavily to the globalization and development of the continent’s sound.

While highlife is regarded as the country’s biggest sonic export, the introduction of hiplife some 30 years ago invigorated the Ghanaian music scene and birthed some of the country’s most important artists.

Hiplife music blends hip-hop from the West with Ghanaian highlife sounds like Jama and Kpanlogo — a sound and dance by the Ga people, who make use of nono (metal bell), fao (gourd rattle), and local drums to play beats.

These elements were fused with funk, bass, and boom-bap to create hiplife. Hiplife and hip-hop have aural similarities and both use rapping; both genres also reflect a larger culture.

While Gyedu-Blay Ambolley is considered one of the earliest rappers, as demonstrated on his 1973 song “Simigwa-Do,” the term “hiplife” was only coined in the late 1990s by genre pioneer Reggie Rockstone.

Still, American hip-hop had arrived in the Ghanaian capital of Accra by the early ’90s and local rappers began to release their own music soon after. Duo Talking Drum were among this early cohort, and their single “Aden” was an underground hit in 1993.

As a movement and culture, hiplife is also an identity,  created to encourage people to be daring in their exploration of sound. Pioneering hiplife artists like Root Eye Samini and Shatta Wale (then known as Bandana) fused dancehall and highlife in the early ’90s to make music which could connect with local audiences.

Collaborations between artists and producers have been crucial in defining the sound, evolution, and amplification of hiplife.

Just as hip-hop has developed a plethora of subgenres, hiplife has birthed other sounds such as azonto and asakaa.

An offshoot of asakaa, Ghanaian drill, was among the elements in the new Best African Music Performance Category at the 2024 GRAMMYs.

The story of hiplife includes many important producers, artists and labels, including Kassa Records, DJ Rab, Zap Mallet, Akyeame, Panji Anoff, JayQ, Hammer,  Ex Doe, Chicago, and Okomfour Kwadee. Going forward, the mantle will fall on artists like TicTac, Abrewa Nana, Appietus, and much later a younger generation including  Asem, Richie Mensah, and Beeztrap KOTM continue to amplify hiplife.

Afrobeats artists have also taken notice; Tic Tac and Tony Tetuila’s “Fefe Ne Fe” was sampled on the 2019 song “Gbese” by DJ Tunez feat. Wizkid and Blaqjerzee.

With African music continuing to gain global recognition, the rich sounds emanating from the African continent are ripe for exploration.  Read on for 10 artists who have been essential to the story of hiplife music.

Reggie Rockstone

Reggie Rockstone is regarded by many Ghanaians as the godfather of hiplife, having paved the path for many to pursue rapping as a career.

Working with producers like the late Rab Bakari (DJ Rab Bakari), Reggie set the ball rolling for hiplife through songs like “Tsooboi.”

His 1997 album Makaa Maka offered an early template for the sound, fusing Western-influenced hip-hop with traditional Ghanaian highlife sounds. The linguistically adept Reggie Rockstone — a Ghanaian boy who was raised in the UK and New York — rapped in both English and impeccable Ghanaian Twi to the shock and admiration of many. By this singular act, he proved that it was cool to rap in your own dialect and not necessarily in English, like American rappers of the ’90s.

Reggie’s will to make Ghanaian rap music stand out via releases like Me Na Me Kae, and Me Ka did not go unrewarded. He also scored hits with his singles “Keep Your Eyes on the Road,” “Plan Ben,” and “AH.” He has also collaborated withdancehall giant Beenie Man and Nigerian legend 2Face.

Lord Kenya

Lord Kenya rose to fame when he joined Slip Music, one of Ghana’s celebrated music labels of the late ’90s and mid-2000s. His musicality was undeniable, and his hardcore rap style was adored by many for its energetic flow and delivery.

Likened to Tupac Shakur, Kenya was very direct whenever he was on the mic. He never shied away from any lyrical battle thus earning him the title “rap heavyweight.”

His swagger on and off the mic made him a star, with many eager to catch him anytime he performed.

Lord Kenya’s street affinity, coupled with great stage performances, left a mark on Ghanaian audiences. His albums — including 1998’s Sika Card, Yesom Sika, and Sika Baa — solidified his position as one of hiplife’s most important artists.

Kenya’s hit singles “Enyomo,” “Medo” and “Sika Mpo Mfa Neho” as well as his verse on the late Daseebre Dwamena’s song, “Kookoo” ushered in a street approach to the rap scene, as seen in the careers of rappers like Kwaw Kese and Kweku Smoke in later years.

Obrafour

Revered, celebrated, and crowned by music rap purists in Ghana as “Rap Sofo” (high priest of rap), Obrafour influenced multiple generations of rappers in Ghana.

The artist first gained popularity in the late ’90s with his cadence and mastery over his mother tongue, Twi, as well as his storytelling, lyricism, and wisdom.

Obrafour’s flow complemented the work of legendary producer Hammer, who brought hard-hitting drums, horns, and legendary sharp chords to Obrafour’s 1999 album Pae Mu Ka.

The album is regarded as the bridge that connected older audiences who dismissed hiplife as a passing fad and the youth, who regarded hiplife as the future of Ghanaian music. Today, Pae Mu Ka is as important to hiplife as Nas’ Illmatic is to hip-hop.

Pae Mu Ka was the first of several collaborations between Obrafour and Hammer. Together, they created a sound that would influence generations of rappers. Obrafour is held in high regard by rappers such as M.anifest, Guru, Ko-Jo Cue, and Pappy Kojo.

VIP

Established in Nima, a suburb of Accra, VIP underwent significant personnel changes but never let their commitment to hiplife music falter. Original member Friction later onboarded Promzy, Prodigal, and Lazzy (who later changed his name to Zeal), and Bone championed the vision of the group for over a decade (as well as the departure of  Friction, Bone and Promzy).

Backed by the group’s diverse personalities, VIP quickly became one of the biggest music exports of the country, winning six awards at the Ghana Music Awards in (2004), including Song Of The Year for the 2003 hit title track “Ahomka Wo Mu.”

Over a two-decade period, the group released albums and scored several hits and collaborated with some of the continent’s finest, including  2Face, Patoranking and a host of others. Vision in Progress (VIP) epitomized the cultural ethos of hiplife: raw energy, passion and talent.

When Reggie Rockstone, a longtime admirer of the group, arrived in 2014, the group became  VVIP. The group’s success would be further cemented as they crossed over into Nigeria and other parts of the world. “Ahomka Wo Mu” has been sampled and interpolated by various musicians, including songs by  MUT4Y & Wizkid  and Kida Kudz.

Tinny

While Twi rapping artists dominated the hiplife music industry, very few artists were successfully making music in other local dialects. Tinny — a rapper who raps in Ga, a language spoken by the people of Accra —  rose to the occasion with both rap and fashion. Another product of Hammer’s Last Two record label, Tinny had an unmatched aura that earned him the moniker “Sexy Man Tinny.”

Early aughts albums such as Makola Kwakwe, Aletse (Akwe Polo), and Kaa Bu Ame still echo in today’s industry. His later works with record producer Richie Mensah on singles like “Ringtone” and “Now I Know” further entrenched his name in Ghana’s hiplife history.

Tinny’s will to pursue rap music in Ga laid the foundation for artists such as Edem, who raps predominantly in Ewe and to a degree music duo Blackstone who performed in Dagbani. Tinny also featured in the BET Hiphop Awards International Cypher (Ghana) alongside Reggie Rockstone, Sarkodie, D Black, Edem, Kwaku-T and Baby G (2010).

Mzbel

In a male-dominated industry, Mzbel created change that still reverberates today through the careers of women like Amaarae, Wendy Shay, Sister Afia and Gyakie.

Following in the footsteps of those before her, like Abrewa Nana (a household name in the early 2000s for her role as one of the leading female artists in hiplife), Mzbel’s singing and rap skills were not just catchy, but thought-provoking with themes of love, sex, body positivity, and addressing abuse.

Mzbel’s non-conformity made her a target by some aspects of the industry. The general public who felt she was a bad influence on younger girls, due to the sensuality in her lyrics and imagery. Yet she was unphased.

Mzbel scored national hits with her albums Awosome, and 2005’s 16 Years, and touched on issues many regarded as controversial. The rapper stood up for women’s rights and encouraged women to be vocal about things society heavily criticizes women for.

She ensured that women were not bullied into silence but instead express themselves fully through art. Her hit single “16 Years” with the late Castro touched on the issue of sexual harassment and abuse young girls face at the hands of older men and, as such, became a national topic.

Sarkodie

Since bursting onto the scene in 2008, Sarkodie has churned out multiple hits year after year with a unique flow and delivery.

His records touch on multiple subjects, including friendship, family, love, heartbreak, and bad governance. His hold over rap in Ghana has been extended across the continent, making him one of the most influential rappers in Africa.

In 2012, Sarkodie played a pivotal role in the amplification of azonto music (an offshoot of hiplife that melds dance music genre from the early 2010s with upbeat fast-paced sounds and witty comical lyrics) with his song “U Go Kill Me” with fellow rapper E.L. Winning “Artist Of The Decade at the” Ghana Music Awards (2019), cemented his influence and status.

Rapping predominantly in Twi, Sarkodie’s ability to find pockets on the beat has made him a frequent featured artist by the likes of Mr. Eazi, Ice Prince, Flavour, Victoria Kimani, Patoranking and a host of other important artists in Africa. Sarkodie won Best International Act: Africa (2012) and the inaugural Best International Flow at the BET Hiphop Awards in 2019.

Asakaa Boys

In a time when hiplife had taken a back seat to Afrobeats and amapiano on the Ghanaian market, a group of artists from Kumasi (Kumerica) — a slang used to describe people of Kumasi who enthusiasts of American music and culture — burst onto the scene via asakaa, or Ghanaian drill.

Inspired by Pop Smoke’s drill music, the sound reflects their lifestyle on the streets of Kumasi, hiplife elements, and American hip-hop culture such as fashion.

The name asakaa originates from the word saka, a flipped slang of the Twi word kasa, which means to speak. Saka, a style of speaking where words are pronounced backwards, was heard in the songs that were released by the Asakaa Boys.

The asakaa sound is credited to the Kumasi-based Life Living Records, and signees Jay Bahd, Kawabanga, O’Kenneth, City Boy, Kwaku DMC, Reggie, Sean Lifer, Braa Benk and Skyface SDW under the moniker The Asakaa Boys.

With songs like “Akatafoc“, “Sore,” and “Agyeiwaa,” and leading the charge, Asakaa (Ghanaian Drill) has gained recognition locally and internationally in the 2020s.

Black Sherif

Black Sherif may be young, but he has already charted a path of success for himself in Ghana’s music industry which many are yet to match. Black Sherif’s sound, writing, fashion, and mannerisms have earned him admiration.

He first tasted popularity when his song “Money” went viral in 2019; two years later he regained public attention in 2021 with his First and Second Sermon songs and after a Burna Boy cosign on “Second Sermon Remix,” Black Sherif’s popularity soared.

The artist has gone on to deliver multiple hit songs such as “Kweku The Traveller,” “Soja,” and a monstrous guest verse on Odumodu Blvck’s “Wotowoto Seasoning.”

In 2023 he won Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards and aBET Awards Best International Award. Additionally, he has performed on global stages atMOBO Awards, Wireless Festival, and 2023’s AfroNation.

King Paluta

With a charisma like that of Lord Kenya, King Paluta is an energetic rapper with some “thugness” in his delivery influenced by life on the streets of Kumasi.

As a young man, he often slept in the studio, where he learned how to operate the equipment in the studio and dropped his first official single in 2015.

Despite releasing music and being popular in Kumasi, he would only gain national attention in 2023 for “Yahitte,” which earned him the award as the Best New Artist at The Ghana Music Awards in 2024.

In the 2024 alone, he has scored two charting-topping singles, “Aseda” and “Makoma,” making him arguably the hottest artist in Ghana.

As a student of hiplife, King Paluta has fully embodied the genre as evident in his music. He has positioned himself to carry on the legacy of those before him as far as hiplife is concerned, and he is on track thus far.

“We started rapping from 1997 in Tema. Your favourite rapper Sarkodie is from Achimota, and he came to Tema to learn the genre” he stated.

In his new song titled “Statement,” Yaa Pono said he is one of the trailblazers, who has entertained Ghanaians through rap for over two decades.

Yaa Pono raps, addressing the perception that Sarkodie is a Tema native. “If you talk rap, it’s me. You cannot take me out, and I control the game.”

This comment by Shatta Wale has angered Dr Zilla Limann who described it as disrespectful.

She could not fathom why Shatta will mock her husband without any provocation.

Dr Zilla Limann added that, it is obvious Shatta is ignorant about the importance of promoting a local food like waakye.

“Am I not promoting something indigenous, something that we own and putting something on the map?” she quizzed.

There’s corruption in music industry – Reggie Rockstone on ‘streaming farms’ https://www.adomonline.com/theres-corruption-in-music-industry-reggie-rockstone-on-streaming-farms/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 13:54:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2346179 Hiplife pioneer, Reggie Rockstone has exposed what he claims is widespread corruption within the music industry.

He has alleged that some artistes allegedly resort to purchasing online streams to inflate their popularity.

Speaking on Cape Coast’s Property FM, Reggie Rockstone expressed concern that many musicians are not authentically earning the staggering streaming numbers they boast but are resorting to streaming farms – (the practice of artificially boosting streaming numbers through various means).

The Me Na Me Kae crooner did not mince words as he called attention to the corruption infiltrating the music scene, hinting that it merits a thorough discussion.

He asserted, “the huge number of streams some musicians get are sometimes not genuine because they have streaming farms. The corruption that has infiltrated into music nowadays is a whole topic for another day that we need to discuss.”

Reggie Rockstone suggested that the creators of popular digital streaming platforms, including Spotify, are profiting immensely at the expense of the musicians themselves.

The Ghanaian artiste added that the revenue generated from these platforms predominantly benefits those who initiated them, particularly individuals from other parts of the world.

“The white people are really enjoying our money out of the digital streaming platforms they’ve created like Spotify and the rest,” Rockstone lamented. They’re really spending our money, and they always find a new way to rip, so we have a lot of things that we have to look at.”

Samini, Black Sherif, Smallgod, others lead #PlayGhana initiative; ‘This is long overdue’ https://www.adomonline.com/samini-black-sherif-smallgod-others-lead-playghana-initiative-this-is-long-overdue/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 15:57:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2332301 The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry in collaboration with the Creative Arts Agency and some stakeholders of the music industry on Thursday, launched the #PlayGhana initiative.

This initiative aims to promote Ghanaian music across the country ahead of the Christmas ‘detty December’ activities where there is an influx of diasporans spending their holidays in Ghana.

Speaking at the press briefing, The Director of the Creative Arts Agency, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, noted that through the Christmas season, a time when the creative community shines, Ghanaian culture, including fashion, arts and food, travels to other parts of the world courtesy of diasporans. However, music always lags.

“Today marks the day that we are pledging to push Ghanaian music to the forefront of our audiences, starting at home. The Creative Arts Agency will collaborate with stakeholders and players of the music industry, film and broadcasting to review our local content regulations,” she noted.

Miss Akufo-Addo added that “both the Cultural Policy and the Broadcasting Bill must be amended and enforced. Our Nigerian cousins have implemented 70% local content law, within music, film and broadcasting, Ghana must do the same.”

Also at the #PlayGhana press briefing, musicians Smallgod, Samini, Reggie Rockstone and Black Sherif were present to help push the initiative.

Samini noted that it was high time Ghanaian music was given at the front seat stating that the consistent play of foreign music over local songs has greatly affected the promotion of the industry.

“We’ve always been advocating the fact that we need to hear more of our music when we are in our own territory. Because that’s what we see when we go to other territories. If you go to Kenya, for instance, you hear strictly East African music. Yes, of course, we have the Nigerian invasion, which is inevitable, which is not the competition here.”

“That’s not the complaint here. That’s not the target here. What we’re talking about is that, especially for the fact that we have beyond the return, which has become like an asset to Ghana, should anybody travel here and listen to 70% foreign music and 30% Ghanaian music, then what music have we sold to those who returned,” Samini added.

The ‘My Own’ hitmaker stated that Ghanaian music is underrepresented on streaming platforms explaining that continuously feeding the public foreign music has introduced them to other singers rather than the country’s own.

“It has to be a deliberate approach. It has to be strategic and deliberate, without malice to any other force or any other group. Let’s make sure ours is ours, and let’s make it appealing to the masses,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Black Sherif stated that they are not apportioning blame to anyone but rather hoping for a united front to push Ghanaian music.

“You know, this is not a blame game. We are not blaming DJs. We are not blaming artists. We are not blaming consumers. It’s a step in the right direction for us all, our music and our culture. So play Ghana. Blessings.”

Meanwhile, Smallgod stated that this was not to stoke competition with anyone or country but a project to garner support for the music industry.

He hoped that every stakeholder and the general public support the agenda.

“We’re not saying don’t play other music, you could play other music but let the people feel Ghana and feel us,” Smallgod added.

He told Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z that what sets him apart from his contemporaries was his compilation of different songs for performances.

According to him, he was the first to perform with a mashup of songs, a reason one of his arch-rivals at the time, Reggie Rockstone was scared of him.

“It wasn’t just one song that I used but different kinds of music. And that is why Reggie Rockstone was scared of me anytime I used the compilation,” he noted.

Responding to Adjetey Sowah’s claim on Twitter Reggie Rockstone quipped: “He was none to play with but the truth is I beat him and he never beat me on record ? the times e go get me I pulled out of competition Hehehehehe.”

Apart from Reggie Rockstone, the veteran dancer also noted that during his time his competitors were Akosua Agyepong, Gabby Adjetey, Don Arthur, Alex Ofori, among others.

He said the highest amount he was paid in his career was GH¢1000 in the 80’s.

Adjetey Sowah won the World Dance Championship in 1986 after winning several national dance competitions.

Reggie Rockstone urges musicians to unite as Afrobeats doors narrow: limited access for Ghanaian artistes https://www.adomonline.com/reggie-rockstone-urges-musicians-to-unite-as-afrobeats-doors-narrow-limited-access-for-ghanaian-artistes/ Thu, 22 Jun 2023 12:35:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2263361 Renowned Ghanaian musician and pioneer of Hiplife, Reggie Rockstone, has raised concerns over the diminishing opportunities for Ghanaian musicians to break into the international Afrobeats scene.

Rockstone, often referred to as the ‘Godfather of Hiplife,’ stressed the importance of unity among musicians to combat the growing challenges faced by Ghanaian artistes.

In a recent interview on Asempa FM‘s Showbiz Review, Rockstone expressed his belief that the doors to Afrobeats have been gradually closing for Ghanaian musicians, with only a select few being granted access.

He emphasized the need for collaboration, mutual support, and strategic planning within the Ghanaian music industry to overcome this hurdle.

Reggie Rockstone, who played a pivotal role in popularizing the fusion of highlife and hip-hop genres, acknowledged the immense talent that exists in Ghana but lamented the lack of opportunities for artistes to showcase their skills on a global platform.

He urged fellow musicians to put aside their differences and work together towards a common goal, emphasizing the power of collective effort.

“I am an original Kumerican… Drill is just a working title… We need to find a united front otherwise we are not going anywhere. With the Afrobeats, they have shut the door, only a few will be invited in, I tell you. Musicians need a united front, the door to Afrobeats have been shut, only a few GH musicians will be allowed through the door,” he said.

The music industry in Ghana has witnessed tremendous growth in recent years, with several artistes gaining international recognition. However, Rockstone believes that more needs to be done to create sustainable pathways for Ghanaian musicians to gain exposure and establish their presence within the Afrobeats industry.

As an influential figure and advocate for Ghanaian music, Reggie Rockstone has been actively involved in promoting local talent and advocating for the recognition of Ghanaian artistes on the global stage.

Through his plea for unity, he hopes to inspire a collective effort that will not only open doors for more Ghanaian musicians but also elevate the country’s music industry as a whole.

Talking about the emergence of the Asakaa (Ghanaian drill), he urged Ghanaians to support the Kumerican genre that is taking over the airwaves.

He emphasised the need to localise the genre thereby making “Asakaa” a household genre.

Rockstone unhappy hiplife is not mentioned in Grammy’s African Music category definition  https://www.adomonline.com/rockstone-unhappy-hiplife-is-not-mentioned-in-grammys-african-music-category-definition/ Sat, 17 Jun 2023 08:11:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2261377 Legendary rapper, Reggie Rockstone, has registered his displeasure over the non-inclusion of hiplife in the list of genres captured in the definition of Grammy’s newly-created African Music Performance category.

He told Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Twitter Spaces (Joy Entertainment Unpacked) on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 that it was not right for the hiplife brand to have been swept under the carpet in the list of genres the Recording Academy provided.

“I am happy that we are in there because it could have gone the other way but it definitely became an eyebrow raiser when I realised the old lady hiplife wasn’t in there. The old lady’s grandmama is in there. That’s highlife. Even Mapouka is in there.

“Hiplife is what sparked the revolution and you can also go back and check before the re-emergence of Afrobeats with the ‘s’. And Nigeria knows this. We’ve always parlayed. We are cousins but you can never do without the old lady hiplife. You gotta be joking,” he noted.

Reggie also added that the Grammy Awards may have made a typographical mistake by writing highlife instead of hiplife in the genres named for the Best African Music Performance category.

“Here is another thing that came up. A lot of times when people talk about hiplife and highlife they get them confused. So somebody said to me ‘Reggie, it could have been a typo. So many times people have confused hiplife with highlife because they sound so similar,” the Hiplife Grandpapa intimated.

Reggie Rockstone who originated and commercialised Ghana’s version of hip hop, hiplife, has also stated that the exclusion of the genre from the Grammy list may be as a result of recent talk that the genre is dead.

According to him, the genre has only gone through an evolution spawning other sub-genres such as the Ghanaian Drill.

A few days ago, it was announced that the Recording Academy of Grammy Awards had introduced three new categories including the African Music Performance.

Music genres that form part of this category include Ghanaian drill and highlife.

“Best African Music Performance’ category as a track and singles category that recognizes recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent. Highlighting regional melodic, harmonic and rhythmic musical traditions, the Category includes but is not limited to the Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres,” the category definition states.

According to grammy.com, these category additions and amendments were voted on and passed at the Recording Academy’s most recent semiannual Board of Trustees meeting held in May 2023.

Reggie Rockstone speaks on Hajia4Reall’s saga https://www.adomonline.com/reggie-rockstone-speaks-on-hajia4realls-saga/ Fri, 19 May 2023 13:36:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2251242 Hiplife pioneer, Reggie Rockstone, has shared his two cents on the arrest and trial of socialite Mona Montrage alias Hajia4Reall and matters arising.

Since news broke out of the arrest of Hajia4Reall on charges of romance scam and money laundering, social media has been inundated with messages ridiculing her.

An online debate is still ongoing on the illegal lifestyles of celebrities and the shady activities they indulge in to keep up with their reputation.

Sharing his opinion, Reggie Rockstone has called for Hajia to be cut some slack while advising netizens to focus their attention on the real issues of political ‘chop chop’.

According to him, his main issue is the selective energy netizens put up when issues of illegal wealth pop up.

“We have African leaders and politicians chopping our money live. Sh*t that affects me and you and our children’s children! I don’t see y’all say sh*t with the same vim, nope! This is someone’s matter wey no dey affect u saf! You take am World Cup smh! [sic].”

In Reggie’s opinion, the hypocrisy is saluting big men in tinted cars and according them all manner of unsuitable titles including honorable.

Despite not condoning scam, as Hajia is charged with, Reggie is of the opinion that there are bigger fishes to fry.

Netizens were, however, quick to remind him that crime is crime, no matter how subtle it seems in public eye.

Reggie Rockstone recounts bitter experience after his friend snatched his wife https://www.adomonline.com/reggie-rockstone-recounts-bitter-experience-after-his-friend-snatched-his-wife/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 13:53:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2170525 Hiplife grandpapa, Reggie Rockstone, has detailed a bitter heartbreak experience he encountered in his first marriage.

The musician, in an interview on TV XYZ, disclosed his now ex-wife was involved in an amorous relationship with his close friend while he had travelled.

The experience, he said, he sang about in his famous ‘Fa Me Bone Kye Me’ hit track which features KK Fosu and the late Suzzy Williams.

According to him, the song, which reveals how he was devastated after catching his wife in bed with his friend, was his true story.

Despite not going into details on how he uncovered the infidelity on the part of his wife, Reggie Rockstone said the situation broke his spirit.

He revealed he least expected his wife of few years to cheat on him, worse yet with his close friend.

However, he said it took prayer and God’s intervention to overcome his pain and move on with his life.

The ‘Move Fasta’ composer blissfully stated he is grateful for the experience as it led him right into the hands of his current wife, Zilla Liman, whom he has been married to for almost two decades.

Ironically, Reggie Rockstone disclosed the affair between his ex-wife and friend did not last long either.

However, he said maturity has taught him to maintain a friendship with both his ex-wife and friend.

Black Sherif didn’t lose BET – Reggie Rockstone eulogises singer as he drops his first album https://www.adomonline.com/black-sherif-didnt-lose-bet-reggie-rockstone-eulogises-singer-as-he-drops-his-first-album/ Thu, 06 Oct 2022 15:50:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2169341 Ghanaian music legend, Reggie Rockstone, has slammed those behind the news that singer Black Sherif lost out on the Best International Flow category at the recent BET Hip Hop Awards 2022.

Black Sherif lost his BET Best International Flow nomination to Benjamin Epps, a 26-year-old Gabonese rapper based in France.

Ghanaians were certain the prestigious award would be accorded to Black Sherif since his works in the frame of the calendar went global in the music world.

Reacting to this, Reggie Rockstone said he doesn’t see it as a loss because Black Sherif has achieved something that many musicians will die for.

The Hiplife Grandpapa, in an interview with Adomonline‘s Dennis Adu, said the young rapper, who hails from Konongo, deserves to be celebrated for not following the status quo in the music sphere.

“I don’t think that is the right expression. He didn’t lose, definitely not it. He won. Just being mentioned. How long has a man been in here? It’s been a long time he started music, but then he got a nomination in no time. He has won. I love the way Jah moves. Every time we think it’s over, someone comes over to save the day,” Reggie said.

According to Reggie Rockstone, Black Sherif doesn’t follow the trends even with the influx of foreign songs in the system and that makes him unique.

“This person doesn’t play Afrobeat or Hip Hop, and you get his whole vibe. He really defines what I always tell everyone. You don’t need to follow trends. Everyone is doing Afrobeats, and he went the other way.

“It’s very hard right now not to be influenced by what is going on around you. That is why it’s difficult to tell the difference between Ghanaian musicians and Nigerian artistes. He is just like Kwaw Kese, he never changes his style,” Reggie said.

The RockzWaakye CEO lauded the Kweku The Traveller music star for daring to be different with regards to his latest album, The Villain I Never Was.

“We all follow trends, but my style is not as unique as Black Sherif. You can trace my style but with Black Sherif if you want to trace, you are going beyond what it is, and I don’t know even if he knows that.

“I’m glad that I have lived long to witness all of these,” he climaxed.

Reggie Rockstone reacts to Akatakyie’s claim of being originators of Hiplife https://www.adomonline.com/reggie-rockstone-reacts-to-akatakyies-claim-of-being-originators-of-hiplife/ Thu, 18 Aug 2022 09:38:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2150924 Hiplife Grandpapa, Reggie Rockstone, has reacted to claims by music duo Akatakyie that they are the originators of the Hiplife music genre in Ghana.

According to Ebenezer Kwesi Okyere Asumaning, a.k.a King Pharoah of the Akatekyie music group, at the time they came into the music scene, it was just rap music. However, they introduced “their own rhythm” which became the Hiplife genre.

In an interview with KMJ on Prime Morning show on Friday, July 29, 2022, King Pharaoh is reported to have stated:

“…it was only rap all the time, we thought it wise that this is where we come from, let’s use our own rhythm, let’s go back to our own highlife and fuse it with the rap, and that was what made hip-life, yes we made it. Nobody wants to accept the fact but it is there.

“When we came, everybody from old to young wanted to listen to hip-life. Basically, it was Akatekyie, Okyeame, Obrafour. We were the champions of that game…,” he added.

Reggie Rockstone, who pioneered the Hiplife art and has played an important role in the development of this uniquely African genre in Ghana, finds it odd that Akatakyie group will try to steal his title as the originator of the genre from him.

In a video posted on his Instagram page, Reggie Rockstone reacted to the news with a portion of his song ‘La Palm (Sutro) Feat. Slim Vhim.’

“At times, some people need slaps,” the song translates.

He added:

“Who’s worse though? Joy putting this out there or Akatakyie?”

As he stepped out to salvage the situation, he was greeted by agama lizards clinging on his property.

This is not the first time his home has flooded; some three years ago, he cried out to the government to install proper water systems to prevent future occurrences.

It may seem the drainage issue has resurfaced.

Our industry doesn’t idolise legends enough – Stonebwoy https://www.adomonline.com/our-industry-doesnt-idolise-legends-enough-stonebwoy/ Tue, 12 Apr 2022 16:31:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2103854 Dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy, says the music industry is not doing enough to hail artistes whose works have helped shape and taken Ghana’s music global.

The singer made the revelation on April 11, when he took to Twitter to celebrate the 58th birthday of hip-life grandpapa, Reggie Rockstone.

According to Stonebwoy, Reggie Rockstone is among the many legends who are not well appreciated for their efforts.

“Legend, Happy birthday, GrandPapa! Do you think our industry idolises legends enough?” he quizzed.

“I don’t think so,” the singer answered.

Other personalities also attested to the fact that Reggie Rockstone is worth celebrating. For example, Reggie Rockstone is said to have originated the genre Hiplife in Ghana.

The fusion of Ghanaian highlife and American hip-hop is said to have been started by him in the 1990s.

On the joyous occasion, rapper Sarkodie did not miss the opportunity to congratulate Reggie Rockstone.

He prayed for a long life for the Grand Papa. “Happy birthday, grandpa. We thank you. More life,” he tweeted.

According to him, the group was the originator of the genre until “whoever” came into the industry.

Although it is not immediately clear who his comments are directed at, the artiste has in the past described Reggie Rockstone as an opportunist for deciding to join the VIP music group when he exited.

Reggie Rockstone has also been widely credited as the crooner of the hip-life genre earning him the alias ‘Hip-life Grandpapa’.

But in a post on Facebook, Promzy shared a picture of himself with the other members of VIP in its formative years.

He wrote, “these guys here were the original originators of hiplife before whoever or whoever came from nowhere claiming that title in a form of greed and selfishness. We ruled and controlled the streets. VIP was more like a religion. We were the stage movers and the crowd shakers all over Africa and the world.”

Promzy stated that the group worked hard at the time of the movement in 1995 to earn their fame; stressing that they were given no handouts.

“This new Indomie generation needs to go read and do more research on the real pacesetters. (VIP vision in progress, not some f*ck up VVIP bullshit loaded with some opportunists).”

“This was taken in 1998 even though the movement started in 1995. (referencing the picture), How old were you by then? Know the difference…LEGENDS.”

In a video shared online, the two had visited the park to shoot a video that they noted was to help raise funds and rebuild the park.

They explained that one of Efua Sutherland’s daughters had contacted them to help with the fundraising.

But while on the premises attempting to shoot, a man approached the couple, asked who they were and what their mission was.

When they explained, he told them they needed to leave and return after securing permission.

He, however, failed to tell them his identity and who they needed to take permission from.

Meanwhile, Reggie and Zilla queried the caretaker and, among other things, asked for his ID or any form of identification that proved he worked there. However, the man refused to divulge any information.

He insisted that he would not allow the couple to continue filming, stating that he suspects they were up to no good despite their constant repetition of why they were on the premises.

During the argument, another man joined the conversation and proceeded to ask the couple similar questions his colleague asked.

But, he did not take kindly to their answers; he kept raising his hands and seemingly smacked Zilla’s hand in an attempt to get them to stop filming.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s on. No, he didn’t. It did not end well,” Reggie captioned the video.

Reggie Rockstone blasts Ghanaians who are attacking Sarkodie https://www.adomonline.com/reggie-rockstone-blasts-ghanaians-who-are-attacking-sarkodie/ Mon, 23 Aug 2021 14:27:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2004500 Ghanaian musician, Reggie Rockstone, has come to the rescue of rapper Sarkodie after some Ghanaians came after the latter following his interview with Nigerian radio presenter, Osi on Beat FM Morning show.

Sarkodie, during his ‘No Pressure’ album tour in Nigeria, agreed with Osi’s assertion that Ghanaians tend not to be appreciative of their own talents.

The presenter said: So, that’s huge for you as a Ghanaian artiste to sell out the Apollo. And it took me, a Nigerian radio presenter during my research to know… It is almost like we don’t hear about this stuff. It’s almost like it is not happening. So I feel like we recognise how talented you are. You know what you are doing, especially not just for Ghanaian music, what you are doing for African music as well. I think that our Ghanaian brothers and sisters, it’s almost like they don’t know what they have. They should actually show you so much love.

Sarkodie replied: You are trying to get me speechless, basically. Because everything I want to say is what you are saying. So I have nothing to say.

He added that, it is kind of like dicey when it is coming from me. Because you have people, you have friends, they don’t want to feel a certain kinda way. But what you said, I could say that I do get my support from Ghanaians. But I know what you are trying to say. They should really hold on to moments and cherish.

This interview has resulted in many comments against the rapper including him being described as pompous.

But Hiplife artiste, Reggie Rockstone, says the comments Sarkodie made were nothing but the truth.

For him, Sarkodie is down to earth, thus, cannot be described as pompous for voicing out the facts.

Taking to social media, the Grand Papa in a 10 minutes video said: “What really bugs me out is how some of you have managed to take the narrative and turn it around and come back at Sark. You all. Yeah, that’s GH. Oh boy, you have mastered the art.

“The very thing that Nigerian man spoke about, you are actually doing it again by turning around. You know why you are defensive? It is because you are guilty. That is what it is. Before that Nigerian presenter said what he said on television, both you and I knew about Gee hate. It has been a topic apparently pending in my country. You know this, don’t fake a funk. Don’t be a hypocrite. We know that we have serious issues in Ghana concerning our hatred towards each other, even the very country.”

MORE:

Rockstone further descended heavily on the critics stating that what persons in the country derive entertainment from is the beef and arguments between artistes on social media.

“Sarkodie’s issue is just on the surface. Gee, hate affects everything Ghanaian. Self-hating Ghanaians affect everything Ghanaian. It is not about Sark. It affects you, me and our general attitude towards each other. Our b*tchiness, our pettiness. If you don’t believe, half of your social media content is fueled and based on negative, toxic bulls#it. Tell me I’m lying. Half of the sh#t that you all tune into is other folks fighting each other, people putting people out, people cursing each other, that has become our general entertainment.”

The Grand Papa of Hiplife music noted that he has lived long enough to understand the dynamics of the game and although it is impossible to please everyone, Sarkodie is doing enough by carrying the country on his back and should be left alone.

“I’m old enough to speak on this and I know this. I understand the dynamics of what exactly is happening. Spare me the BS and leave that man alone. He has done enough, doing well, yeah you can’t please everybody even if you sell ice cream. But the one thing you are not going to take away from that young man is what he stands for as far as entertainment goes. That man is carrying Ghana on his back,” he said.

He further made reference to a time he figuratively suggested that a statue should be built to celebrate Sarkodie, born Michael Owusu Addo.

“Let me give you an example of how Ghana operates. I remember there was a figure of speech, I love Sarkodie, Medikal, all my soldiers who are putting out their work and I support you. I candidly said Sarkodie deserves a statue. You’d have thought I slapped your mother. You’ve still got your colonial masters statue everywhere. Spare me the bullsh#t. This is how sleek Ghana is. They said Rockstone, what has he done. If anyone deserves a statue then it should be you. No, you don’t need to build me a statue. No, 25 years after my work and putting work into HipLife, you all said I didn’t do it. That is what they do, they play.

“Well everyone is saying Sark is pompous. You are lying. Everything you probably think you know about Sarkodie, it was written, bad blogs, somebody’s opinion that they fed to you so today you come on social media and say he is pompous. Do you know him personally? No you don’t. One thing for sure is I am a good judge of character. If he (Sarkodie) was anyway pompous, I wouldn’t be around him. He is not even close. But it is showbusiness. I am the nicest dude on this earth but people still get to say sh#t about me,” he added.

Serwaa Amihere had opined in a post that begging for Akuapem Poloo wasn’t necessary because she had already accepted her wrongdoing by pleading guilty.

She went on to ask why her supporters were pleading when Akuapem Poloo was already willing to accept the natural consequence of her own actions.

She tweeted:

A person is convicted on her OWN PLEA. this means that the person accepts that he or she is wrong. The natural consequence of pleading guilty on your own volition means that you are ready to be punished. How are we asking for this person to be freed….

When the person has not yet been sentenced???Are we praying for the court to be “LENIENT” or are we asking that she should be “freed” ?????? Just asking…[SIC].

But, Reggie Rockstone has disagreed with Serwaa, explaining to her why people are feeling sorry for the video vixen, who has now been sentenced to 90 days in prison.

According to the rapper, he expects Serwaa Amihere to feel sorry for Akuapem Poloo but not to rather justify the fact that she deserves to be in prison away from her child.

The rapper, in one of his Instagram posts, said it breaks his heart that the school authorities denied admission to students because they were Rastafarians with dreadlocks.

According to Reggie Rockstone, he attended the same school with his wife, hence they have decided to put everything on hold if it has to do with Achimota School.

I have read some embarrassing stuff… my whole family got locks and I am glad the argument came up. We will learn. I am putting an embargo on Motown… it means I am not down with Motown until we get some stuff right.

I am a pan-African and it’s not flying with me… I have been supportive of my school and we have thrown parties – a proud one – but now no. I am looking confused because I am seeing pics of white folks with their long hair and everything… they tell me day students I don’t know… One article that offends me has to do with them allowing Caucasians to keep it wow… Let’s fix this it’s very embarrassing, he said.

In another video, Reggie Rockstone said he gets emotional when he thinks about the subject.

My wife was there. I had a great time but this one I don’t like. So don’t call me for nothing. No more year group. We on pause because I like to go where I am welcomed. I’ll leave my politics for myself and we will work behind. I wont say boycott but its on pause [SIC], he maintained.

Meanwhile, dancehall artiste Samini has also slammed the school over the issue in his latest post on social media.

When blogger Zionfelix queried him on why he wasn’t wearing a ring, he said, I don’t wear rings because I just never did for real [SIC]. We never had a [white] wedding. My wife said she doesn’t like it.

The Grandpapa of Hiplife disclosed he got married traditionally to his wife in the northern part of Ghana.

We went on a long journey. It was simple. You know the whole Limann thing so they took a traditional ceremony to a different level. I am only lucky my wife said white wedding is a waste of money.

In an Instagram video to address a video of a young man wanting to gang rape his daughter, a fan with username, rolls_classic, had this question to ask in the comment section:

Your greatest achievement is selling ‘waakye’ – Shatta Wale tells Reggie Rockstone [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/your-greatest-achievement-is-selling-waakye-shatta-wale-tells-reggie-rockstone-video/ Wed, 08 Apr 2020 07:28:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1775613

Dancehall musician, Shatta Wale, has taken a swipe at Hip-life grandpapa, Reggie Rockstone after the latter addressed the SM boss for rubbishing his achievements in the music industry.

Shatta Wale in an interview on TV3 said Reggie Rockstone’s music craft had no impact in Ghana’s music scene, adding that, he wasn’t the originator of rap in Ghana as presumed.

According to the ‘Ayoo’ hitmaker, Reggie lives a fake life like rapper Sarkodie – they are broke but live lavish lives on social media.

Reggie Rockstone, however, rubbished Shatta’s claim insisting that his music went global due to rap, adding that, he was able to do songs with Beenie Man and Wyclef Jean because of rap music.

Reggie continued that, Shatta Wale goofed with his statement per records and he doesn’t have to waste much time on him.

RELATED:

But Shatta has again replied Reggie Rockstone, reiterating his claim that the veteran musician had no impact in the music sphere.

According to Shatta, the Grandpapa’s ‘waakye’ business is the only venture that helps him survive and not rap.

Your achievement is ‘waakye.’ Don’t tell me I have made mistake [saying you made no impact]. You don’t know this industry than me. You didn’t motivate anyone with anything. Your hiplife didn’t make any impact.

Reggie you are in your father’s house. At this age, I have my own houses. You want show me something? What have you done? What door did you open for me?

The fake life you lived that’s what most of them acts do nowadays. If you think you had an impact, why didn’t you do your thing and you went to join VVIP. It’s because you wanted ghetto credibility. People are now grown, don’t think you want to help the country.

Reggie, meanwhile, reacted to Shatta Wale’s ‘waakye achievement’ tag.

Reggie Rockstone replies Shatta Wale [Watch] https://www.adomonline.com/reggie-rockstone-replies-shatta-wale-watch/ Wed, 08 Apr 2020 07:23:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1775608 Hiplife Grand-papa, Reggie Rockstone, isn’t taking it on a lighter note claims made by Shatta Wale on social media that his music career made no impact in Ghana and beyond.

He has taken to Instagram to reply the dancehall musician after he granted an interview saying Mr Rockstone lives a fake life.

Reggie himself who is said to have brought rap to Ghana made no impact with it, Shatta Wale told TV3 in an interview on Tuesday.

Reggie, who felt disrespected by Shatta’s assertions, took to Instagram to reply him.

MORE:

According to Reggie, the Shatta Movement leader goofed because Shatta Wale started his music career as a rapper before switching to dancehall.

Reggie added that, though dancehall has been laudable in Ghana due to Stonebwoy and Shatta, Hip-life made a lot of rappers and its much closer to the Ghanaian story than patois.

Opinions they are like ass holes everyone got one. But if you say I didn’t make an impact that’s fine… dancehall is not too far from rap. It walks side by side with rap.

But know it’s through rap that I was able to do a song with Beenie Man and Wyclef Jean. Sarkodie is one of the biggest rappers. We got on the BET cypher through rap. Everything I have comes from rap.

Promzy challenges Reggie Rockstone to a rap battle https://www.adomonline.com/promzy-challenges-reggie-rockstone-rap-battle/ Thu, 14 Dec 2017 16:39:30 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=759921 A former member of defunct Hiplife group VIP, Promzy Afrika has challenged the ‘grand papa’ of Hiplife, Reggie Rockstone to a rap battle.

According to the rapper, Reggie Rockstone is no better lyricist than him, hence, the reason he wants to prove his stand through a rap battle.

A few years ago, Promzy left the music group, making room for Reggie Rockstone to become a new member. The name was changed to Very Very Important Personalities (VVIP).

Promzy had said that he was actually kicked out of the group by Reggie, even though the latter has on several occasions disputed this assertion.

The Hiplife Grand papa further disclosed the VVIP group will be willing to accept Promzy, if he decides to stage a comeback because he is a talented musician who could spice up the group.

But it seems Promzy doesn’t seem to have any interest in joining the group as he has rather challenged Reggie Rockstone to a rap battle in any of the stadiums across the country.

“I am sending a message to Reggie Rockstone. Throw me a challenge. Me, I am throwing you a challenge. Let’s start in Kumasi, from there to Cape Coast and the final one in Accra sports stadium…, Promzy said in a Facebook Live video.

“I am urging all these Telcos to support, Reggie battle me one on one, freestyle, let’s see who is who. Anyone that want to know what is going on with me, I am saying it in my freestyle. If you are real enough, come and battle me one-on-one on stage. If you keep quiet, you are a pu**y. I stood for you when you were nobody…” he challenged.

Reggie Rockstone is yet to accept the challenge or commented on it.
