Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, she narrated the traumatic experience her daughter has endured.

“My daughter is still in pain,” she said. “She was injured in her legs, her eyes and her chest. She told me there is blood in her eyes and she keeps complaining that her whole body hurts.”

According to her, Benedicta was taken to the eye clinic on Thursday, where she was given medication, and the pain in one of her legs became unbearable.

“One of her legs was hurting so much she couldn’t handle it at all. When they admitted her at the 37 Military Hospital, she told them about the pain. They cleaned it with a medication they called ‘spirit’, but she was still complaining” she said.

Madam Fosuah said her daughter had been on admission at the 37 Military Hospital from Wednesday until she was discharged on Thursday evening — even though she still struggled to walk properly.

“She couldn’t walk well, yet they discharged her saying she was okay. But she was still in pain, so we had to take her to another hospital. They treated the wound and dressed it. The sore is not very big, but the pain was too much for her,” she explained.

She added that during the stampede, many people stepped on her daughter’s chest, leaving her breathless.

“People stepped on her chest. She didn’t even know what was happening until she was brought to the hospital,” she said.

Madam Fosuah also recalled the terrifying moment doctors told her that Benedicta was unconscious.

“When we got to 37, they told us my daughter was in a coma. She couldn’t speak at all. It was around 4 a.m. on Thursday dawn that she finally opened her eyes and asked, ‘Where am I? Where are my slippers?’ That was the first thing she said,” she recounted.

Despite the pain and the struggle, she praised the staff of the 37 Military Hospital for their support.

“The nurses were very nice to us,” she said. “One nurse even came to attend to her when she complained of pain, but she was still hurting when we left.”

Reports indicate that the recruitment exercise attracted thousands of young people across the country, resulting in chaotic scenes at some centres. In both Accra and Kumasi, several applicants reportedly collapsed while pushing to enter overcrowded venues.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces have clarified that the death toll from Wednesday’s stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium remains six.

Government has been urged to recruit more trained nurses and doctors to support Ghana’s ailing health system.

National Chairman of Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health (GCNH), Dr Gabriel Bernakuu who made the call says lack of skilled professionals including doctors and nurses is the cause of many deaths in some public hospitals.

“I think these deaths in our various health institutions are very bad and worrying and should be dealt with. I think lack of nurses and doctors in our hospitals is also a cause and so government should take action”, he said on Adom FM’s Morning Show Dwaso Nsem Wednesday.

His comments follow the death of a 30-year-old pregnant woman who died at the Suntreso Government Hospital on Wednesday, July 4, 2018.

Angela Afriyie Agyemang reportedly died after the health facility refused to attend to her at the labour ward because her husband could not immediately raise GHS500 “Doctor Motivation Fee”.

Angela Afriyie Agyemang later died at the theatre just as her husband had made available the GHS500 fee for which she had been denied medical attention.

Medical Superintendent of the Suntreso Government Hospital, Dr Thomas Agyarko-Poku has dismissed the allegation.

According to Dr Agyarko-Poku, the deceased was not denied entry to the labour ward because her husband could not raise the money.

Mr Bernakuu, however, described the situation as pure negligence and has called for immediate investigations into the issue.

He wants the Ministry of Health (MoH) to recruit more health personnel to augment the current number to save lives.

“We still have some shortfalls in patient-nurse ratio. The best thing to do is to resource the sector to have adequate personnel trained and recruited and not allow them to go sit at home doing nothing after their training,” he stated.

Attorney General to recruit 50 new staff https://www.adomonline.com/attorney-general-recruit-50-new-staff/ Thu, 15 Feb 2018 15:41:40 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=934351 Miss Gloria Akuffo, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has said her Ministry is in the process of recruiting 50 new staff members to augment its current staff strength for improved performance.
She said the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department needs 600 staff members to operate well but it currently operates with only 300 staff members, a situation which posed a challenge to its operations.
Miss Akuffo said this in Tamale on Wednesday when she interacted with staff of the various departments and agencies under the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department in the Northern Region.
She said her Ministry made a case for more staff to be recruited but the Ministry of Finance gave financial clearance for only 50 staff to be recruited adding 200 people applied to be recruited out of which 50 were being considered for recruitment.
The interaction was to afford the Minister opportunity to learn at first hand the challenges facing the staff in the region and how such challenges could be addressed.
The departments and agencies she interacted with included the Attorney General’s Department, Economic and Organized Crimes Office, Registrar General’s Department, and the Legal Aid Scheme.
Challenges raised by staff included poor staff strength, poor infrastructure and office equipment, and poor funding.
Miss Akuffo said she was also working to ensure that newly trained lawyers were posted to the various departments and agencies under the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department to undertake their national service to help ameliorate the inadequate staff situation.
She assured staff of working to address some of their challenges to improve their working environment to better serve the country.
Mr Issah Mahmudu, Northern Regional Director of the Legal Aid Scheme, thanked the Minister for visiting the region to interact with staff expressing hope that she would make efforts to address challenges facing the various departments and agencies in the region.
The Minister earlier met with Mr Salifu Saeed, Northern Regional Minister to brief him about her mission in the region where the Regional Minister expressed need for Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanism to be expanded to reduce workload on the courts in the region.

Prison Service to recruit 1,000 officers to enhance reformation https://www.adomonline.com/prison-service-recruit-1000-officers-enhance-reformation/ Wed, 12 Jul 2017 07:08:28 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=286371 Government has given approval to the Ghana Prison Service to recruit 1,000 officers to enhance its performance so as to meet the international best practices in prison administration.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia made the disclosure in Accra on Tuesday at the inauguration of a 13-member Governing Council of the Ghana Prisons Council.
He urged the Council members to offer their skills and expertise so as to recruit the right calibre of personnel to the expected standards.
He said as a result of the poor ratio of prison personnel to inmates it had affected the performance of the Service and, thus, falling below the required international standards.
Vice President Bawumia said all over the world the philosophy of prisons was changing from being mere custodians of inmates to rehabilitation so that they would be reformed and re-integrated back into society as nation builders instead of nation wreckers.
However, he said, the prison facilities in the country was not in the best condition to offer the needed training.
He noted that apart from the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons and Nkaful Maximum Security Prisons that had recently received some facelift, the country’s prison facilities had not seen much infrastructure expansion and rehabilitation since the colonial days to offer the best training to inmates.
He said with the growth in the country’s population from six million at the time of independence to about 27 million currently, there was corresponding increase in crime and deviant behaviours.
He, therefore, said there was the need to expand the prison infrastructure with modern facilities, rehabilitation tools and trained personnel to manage the situation for better outputs.
“Our prison facilities are inhumane, overpopulated and riddled with attendant threat of outbreak of diseases, negative survival behaviours and human rights abuses.
“The issue of human rights is of much concern to the Government, we should remember that although inmates are confined as prisoners let us not forget they have rights which should not be taken for granted,” he noted.
Vice President Bawumia charged the Council to adopt public-private partnerships in building new prison facilities and relocation of old ones to appropriate locations.
He urged them to endeavour to offer modern methods and professional training and re-training to the prisons personnel as well as engaging in foreign missions and exchange programmes in order to build their capacities for the reformation and re-integration exercise.
He urged the Prison Service to rebrand itself with diligence and professionalism so that the public would have trust and confidence in the Prison Administration.
Vice President Bawumia expressed optimism that the new Council, with the support of the Government, would end the record of poor prison facilities by writing the wrongs to meet the required standards.
He expressed delight over the achievements made so far by the Justice for All Programme, which had helped in decongesting the country’s prisons.
He, therefore, said it was the desire of the Government to champion the non-custodian sentencing law to offer more non-custodian sentencing option to the judges in order to avoid overcrowding the country’s prisons.
Vice President Bawumia, on behalf of the President, expressed gratitude to members for accepting the offer to serve on the Council, saying; “You were selected based on your vast experiences, skills and expertise”.
Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, and member of the Council, on behalf of the members, thanked the President for the confidence reposed in them and gave the assurance that they would work diligently to meet their mandate.
He said the Council was aware of the Efiase Project initiated by the previous administration and gave the assurance that the Council would give it a new face to meet the set objectives.
He pledged to ensure that the Prison Service got the necessary facilities to provide the required services for the rehabilitation of the inmates and re-integration into the society.
The 13-member Council comprised Most Rev. Peter Paul Yelezuom.
Angkyier, the Chairperson, Mr Ambrose Dery, the Minister of the Interior, Mr Patrick Darko Missah (DGP) from the Ghana Prisons Service, and Dr Frank Anobea from the Ghana Medical Association.
Others are Mr Akwasi Amoako Adjei, Ghana Bar Association, Madam Yvonne Akakora Obuobisa, Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General’s Department, Mr Benjamin Akonu Otoo, Department of Social Welfare and Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, the Christian Council of Ghana.
The rest are Mr Samuel Akampure Akolbire, a representative of senior officers, Ms Dorcas Bonnah, member, Buipe-wura Mahama Abdulai Jinapor II, a representative of the National House of Chiefs, Madam Sarah M. Adetola, President’s nominee and Madam Matilda Baffour-Awuah, also a President’s nominee.
Chapter 16 of the 1992 Constitution established the Prison Service and mandates it as the custodian, rehabilitation and re-integration of prisoners.
