Hansi Flick’s side were seconds away from being confirmed as champions without playing, only for Madrid to score with practically the last kick of the game at the Bernabeu.

Barcelona will only need a point at rivals Espanyol on Thursday (20:30 BST) to wrap up the title.

Martin Valjent drilled a fine low effort to give visitors Mallorca the lead in the Spanish capital.

Hosts Real were dominant but missed a host of chances before Kylian Mbappe found the bottom corner with a well-hit strike.

They continued to miss chances before Ramon’s close-range volley after some poor defending delivered the win.

Despite this comeback, the title is still highly likely to go to Barcelona, who are four points ahead at the top with a game in hand.

The league was as good as won thanks to Sunday’s 4-3 Clasico win over Real, which was Barcelona’s fourth victory over their rivals this season.

That includes wins in the finals of the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.

Legendary boss Carlo Ancelotti is likely to end his final season at Real Madrid without a major trophy.

He takes over as Brazil manager once this La Liga season ends, with Xabi Alonso expected to replace him in time for June’s Fifa Club World Cup.

Including minor trophies, Ancelotti is the most successful boss in Real’s history, with 15 pieces of silverware, including three Champions League and two La Liga wins.

His last trophy came in December, with the win over Mexican side Pachuca in the Fifa Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar, a relatively minor triumph for a club who crave the biggest prizes in the game.

Barcelona beat Mallorca to move seven points clear https://www.adomonline.com/barcelona-beat-mallorca-to-move-seven-points-clear/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 21:38:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527642 Dani Olmo scored the decisive goal as Barcelona dominated Mallorca to extend their lead at the top of La Liga.

The Spain midfielder scored 41 seconds into the second half after Barcelona failed to score with any of the 24 shots they took in the first half.

Mallorca goalkeeper Leo Roman produced fine saves to deny Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres before the break, as the visitors hung on under suffocating Barcelona pressure.

In one surreal passage of play Roman and his defenders denied Barca from inside the penalty area four times in the space of 15 seconds.

Though the Balearic side only had 22% possession in the first half, they did get in behind Barcelona’s high defensive line on three occasions and were denied an opener by the offside flag.

Barcelona were whistled off at half-time, but Olmo eased the growing anxiety inside the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys with a cool left-footed finish.

Hansi Flick – who made seven changes to his side with an eye to Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid – introduced Raphinha and Fermin Lopez after the break as Barca searched for a second goal, but Roman produced 11 saves in total to keep his side in it.

Barcelona took 40 shots – the most any La Liga side has attempted this season – while Mallorca failed to register an effort on target.

Barcelona now hold a seven-point lead at the top of the table, with closest challengers Real Madrid playing Getafe on Wednesday.

Europa League-chasing Mallorca remain seventh with 44 points, one ahead of Celta Vigo who have played one game fewer.

Bellingham helps Real Madrid reach Spanish Super Cup final https://www.adomonline.com/bellingham-helps-real-madrid-reach-spanish-super-cup-final/ Fri, 10 Jan 2025 09:26:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491528 Jude Bellingham’s second-half strike helped Real Madrid beat Mallorca in Jeddah to set up a meeting with Barcelona in Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup final.

The England midfielder broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute of the semi-final by poking home after Rodrygo’s header hit the post and Kylian Mbappe’s follow-up was saved.

Last year’s winners added further goals in stoppage time when Martin Valjent turned Brahim Diaz’s through ball into his own net and Rodrygo swept in Lucas Vazquez’s shot from close range.

Bellingham’s goal was his seventh for Real in his past nine games and his ninth of the season.

Sunday’s Clasico, a repeat of last year’s final which Real won 4-1, kicks off at 19:00 GMT.

Barcelona, who were 4-0 winners when the sides met in La Liga in October, earned their place in the final by beating Athletic Club 2-0 on Wednesday.

Dani Olmo missed that match amid Barcelona’s troubles with registering the winger, but he could feature in the final after provisional permission was given by the Spanish national sports council.

Barcelona have won the Super Cup a record 14 times, with Real just one title behind them.

Inaki Williams’ Athletic Bilbao beat Real Mallorca on penalties to win Copa del Rey https://www.adomonline.com/inaki-williams-athletic-bilbao-beat-real-mallorca-on-penalties-to-win-copa-del-rey/ Sun, 07 Apr 2024 04:51:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2377861 Athletic Bilbao ended their run of six successive Copa del Rey final defeats as they earned a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Mallorca to end a 40-year wait for silverware.

Athletic clinched their 24th Copa del Rey title – and first since 1984 – when Alex Berenguer stepped up to seal a 4-2 win in the shootout in Seville.

It sparked jubilant scenes at a sold-out La Cartuja stadium and ended Athletic’s painful recent run in the competition, during which they lost two finals in as many weeks in 2021.

Dani Rodriguez fired Mallorca – 15th in La Liga – ahead in the 21st minute after Athletic failed to clear from a corner.

Athletic, pushing for a top-four La Liga finish under former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde, were denied an equaliser before half-time when Nico Williams’ finish was ruled out for offside.

But Oihan Sancet drew them level shortly after the interval, curling in after the influential Williams regained possession and played him through.

Neither side was able to find a winner, with Williams failing to hit the target in the second period of extra time while Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi saw his header pushed away by Athletic goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala.

Mallorca, who played in Spanish football’s third tier as recently as 2018, were aiming to win the Copa del Rey for only the second time following their 2003 triumph.

But, in their 40th Spanish Cup final – the most recent two of which were both lost in April 2021 after the pandemic delayed the 2020 final – it was Athletic who were able to celebrate a long-awaited success.

In the shootout, the 23-year-old Agirrezabala saved Manu Morlanes’ spot-kick and Nemanja Radonjic missed the target, as Athletic’s first four penalty takers all found the net.

Only Barcelona, with 31, have won the trophy on more occasions than Athletic, Spain’s fourth-oldest club who maintain a unique philosophy of only fielding players of Basque origin.
