Organizers of the event announced the decision in a press statement, citing critical challenges including insufficient funding, lack of sponsorship, and limited government support.

The event, originally scheduled for December 26, 2024, was aimed at showcasing Ms Fiador’s determination to set a new record and inspiring educational excellence.

According to the event’s Team Secretary, Edward Nketiah, the postponement resulted from multiple obstacles.

These include the diversion of corporate attention and resources due to the recent elections, unmet financial requirements for event setup and publicity, and a lack of essential support from government agencies.

“After careful observation, consultations, and further considerations, we would like to inform you that the Morkporkpor Read-A-Thon has been postponed to a future date, yet to be determined. Key challenges have hindered our progress, but we remain committed to achieving this milestone,” the statement read.

Organizers assured stakeholders and supporters that a new date would be communicated after thorough consultations.

They expressed gratitude for the dedication and contributions of all involved, emphasizing that these efforts have laid a solid foundation for eventual success.

‘Dumsor’ disturbing our read-a-thon – Sophia Boadi’s team laments https://www.adomonline.com/dumsor-disturbing-our-read-a-thon-sophia-boadis-team-laments/ Sun, 24 Mar 2024 09:41:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2372406 Guinness World Records contender, Sophia Boadi’s ambitious endeavor to read continuously for seven days has encountered a major obstacle due to power outages commonly known as ‘dumsor’.

The spokesperson for her team, Shaibu Quartey, addressed the media regarding the challenges faced during the read-a-thon.

He highlighted that, while the initiative had been progressing positively, technical issues arose on the first day which were worsened by the recurring problem of power cuts.

However, he said they are making use of a standby generator to mitigate the impact of these outages.

He explained that, the rules of the read-a-thon could mandate automatic disqualification if the power goes out completely.

The PRO also noted other challenges including fatigue, which he said makes it difficult for Sophia Boadi to maintain focus.

Sophia Boadi, a 27-year-old participant, had originally planned to read continuously for six days starting March 15, 2024, at the SG Mall in Kumasi.

However, due to the unforeseen challenges, she has extended the duration of the event.

Her primary objective is to spotlight the literary richness of Ghanaian authors and publishers on a global stage.

Despite the setbacks, Boadi and her team are determined to persevere and accomplish their mission.

Her attempt is currently ongoing at the SG Mall, Kumasi and is expected to come to an end on Thursday, March 21, 2024 or beyond.

The current record holder is from Turkey, who read just one book for 124 hours.

However, Sophia has collaborated with the Ghana Library Association and has at least 460 books at her disposal.

Among the books she intends to read are: actress Yvonne Nelson’s tell-it-all memoir, I Am Not Yvonne Nelson as well as books from renowned personalities including Gifty Anti, Adjetey Anang and Nakeeyat.

She will also read the newly-released History of Ashanti book and others by Ghanaian publishers.

Her motive, she said is to showcase the intellectual depth of Ghanaian authors and publishers to the world.

Sophia also revealed she intends to empower young widows like herself to strive to make it to the top, reminding them that “when you lose your partner, all hope is not lost and you can still achieve whatever you want to achieve”.

Sophia applied in June 2023 and received official approval six months after in November 2023.

She is confident to clench victory by the special grace of God.
