Thabo Bester fled from jail last May by faking his own death in a fire and planting a corpse in his cell.

He was arrested with his girlfriend, celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana.

The pair arrived aboard a chartered plane at an airport on the outskirts of the commercial hub, Johannesburg.

They will be placed under heavy police guard, senior officials have told the BBC’s Pumza Fihlani.

Arrangements are underway for Mr. Bester to return to a high security prison to serve a life sentence for murder, plus preparations for a court appearance on fresh charges with his girlfriend for his brazen prison break.

Mr. Bester is known as the “Facebook rapist” for using the social networking site to lure his victims.

He was convicted in 2012 for the rape and murder of his model girlfriend Nomfundo Tyhulu. A year earlier, he was found guilty of raping and robbing two other women.

This comes after two men were forced to have sex with female robbers when they boarded a commercial bus.

According to police in one of the incidents, a 22-year-old man was robbed of US$50, a cell phone, and some personal documents after he boarded an unregistered Honda Fit destined as a cab.

The police report that the vehicle had four occupants, one man and, three women.

The suspects reportedly diverted the route and went on to rob and forced the commuter to have sex with one of the female suspects.

“Along the way, the suspects diverted the route before robbing the complainant of his valuables and forcing him to have sexual intercourse with one of the female suspects,” the police statement read.

In another separate incident, a 20-year-old man was robbed of US$40, a cell phone and his wallet after he boarded a Honda Fit which had two men and three women.

The third was a victim, a man, 20, who was robbed of US $40, a wallet and a cell phone after he was offered a lift in a Honda Fit vehicle which had five occupants, two men and three women.

The suspects kidnapped the complainant and took him to an unknown house where they slept together and later released him.

This is not the first time female rapists have been on the prowl. A number of cases of men getting raped or sexually molested by female rapists after boarding private vehicles were once on a rise.

In 2011, there was once a nationwide syndicate of women raping men. The women would reportedly pounce on unsuspecting male victims and use their semen for rituals.

According to the police, the victim, who is a friend of the defendant’s daughter, was reportedly defiled by the defendant when she went to see her friend.

The police prosecutor, L.P Fombot, told the court that the minor had visited the accused’s home to see her friend, but did not meet her at home. 

Fombot said the victim, however, met the accused at home alone who allegedly dragged her into his room, threatened her with a knife, and had carnal knowledge of her.

She alleged that the accused threatened her on several occasions, raping her repeatedly.

The prosecutor said luck, however, ran out on him when he took the minor to the bush to have carnal knowledge of her but was spotted by her school teacher.

Three prisoners reportedly killed a fellow inmate by stabbing him in the neck and cutting his heart out with a sharpened toothbrush before hacking off his penis and stuffing it in his mouth.

Convicted paedo Alex Sandro de Souze Mota, 30, was found dead by prison guards on the floor of his cell with his heart removed and wrapped in a plastic and his penis stuffed in his mouth.

News site Ndmais reported Mota, who was serving time for raping his five-year-old stepdaughter, died as a result of a blow to the neck carried out by an unidentified inmate.

The police reported that they believe three inmates, identified only as L.B.R., K.R.I. and J.M.S.C., were responsible for the killing.

L.B.R., 22, is believed to have killed Mota by stabbing him in the neck with a toothbrush while K.R.I., 22, and J.M.S.C., 31, assisted by mutilating Mota’s corpse.

The body was sent for autopsy and the investigation is ongoing.

An arrest warrant for murder has been issued against the three suspects.

The divorcee and father-of-two, in a bid to satisfy his insatiable urge, allegedly took the turkey into an uncompleted building for the unpardonable act.

For this, the Awutu Ofaakor Circuit Court remanded Nii for two weeks.

Adom News’ Kofi Adjei who was in court said the suspect pleaded guilty to the offense.

He added that, Nii is expected to appear in court on January 6, 2021.

The criminal went to carry out a robbery operation in the room of a 24-year-old student, identified as Juanita, at Abompey, a suburb of Obuasi.

According to her, around 2:am, an unknown man suddenly entered her room, drugged her and had forceful sex with her.

When she woke up, she saw the man, with a cutlass and a locally manufactured pistol, who took her GHC550, a TV set and mobile phone.

Upon realising the victim was awake, he set off, only to return and asked for a blowjob that got his penis bitten in the process.

The angry robber retaliated with a bite, before making away with a bleeding manhood.

Justina quickly reported to the police and thereafter proceeded to AGA Hospital for treatment.

Few minutes later the suspect also came to the same hospital for treatment, and she alerted the security men.

The suspect, 23-year-old Emmanuel Ankron, has been arrested and put under guard watch at the hospital.

Crime scene investigators visited the scene where the cut penis was retrieved and sent to the hospital for preservation.

The 44-year-old Ncokolo, whose arrest on June 7, 2017, signalled an end of reign of terror for many girls and women in Mdantsane, is alleged to have been responsible for repeated rape onslaught with impunity since 2014 until his arrest in 2017.

His arrest came after he attempted to rape a 14-year-old girl on June 6, 2020. Much to his surprise, the strong and brave young girl managed to kick him with both feet on his chest and he rolled down a steep incline. The young girl managed to run and called for help.

The suspect was chased by a group of community members but managed to escape. A day after his lucky escape, he was apprehended by community members in his home. Police came just in time and arrested him. His buccal sample was taken and sent to Cape Town laboratory and he was linked to several rape cases around Mdantsane area.

His trial commenced in September 2020 with 140 witnesses and 22 victims and rape survivors. Despite overwhelming evidence presented against him, he still pleaded not guilty.

Some 12 of the 22 survivors were minors aged between 9 and 15. It is alleged that he monitored their movements from home to school and back from the local car wash where he was employed. He would then prey on them while they were passing a bushy uninhabited area on their way to school.

He was charged for 41 counts as follows;

1. Murder – 3 counts
2. Rape – 19 counts
3. Theft – 3 counts
4. Sexual assault – 3 counts
5. Assault to do grievous bodily harm – 9 counts
6. Assault – 4 counts

Judge Belinda Stretcher, who was presiding over the trial, sentenced Nokolo on November 3, 2020, at Bisho High court as follows:

• Count 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 Rape charges -20 years

• Count 9 Repeated rape- 25 years.
• Count 10 rape of 13-year-old
• Count 11 rape and murder-two life sentences taken as one
• Count 12 Rape – 20 years

A statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner Eastern Cape, said the police detective’s good cooperation with prosecution and the courts resulted in the excellent arrest, successful conviction and sentencing by the judge.

The two detectives, who were responsible for the investigations, were also praised by senior police management.

Sgt Sizwe Gaika, attached to Provincial FCS (Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses investigation unit, an award-winning detective, who has meticulous attention to detail, was responsible for the arrest and investigation of all the rape and sexual offenses cases.

WO Phumelele Tile attached to Mdantsane SAPS detectives was responsible for investigation of three murder cases. Tile is an experienced detective with over 25 years investigation in murder and robbery environment. He was nominated as a detective of the year in 2018.

Acting Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile, expressing his delight for the role played by detectives said:

“Both detectives’ co-operation and sterling work resulted in the successful prosecution of the accused. The courts undoubtedly convicted and sentenced the accused on the basis of sufficient evidence and quality investigation as well as great team effort between the High Court and prosecution,” he added.

The sentence will go down as one of the landmark sentences for one person in the province.

The ‘Marry Your Rapist’ bill, which has not been passed yet, is being introduced into the Turkish parliament in preparation for Members of Parliament to debate at the end of January. The proposal has drawn widespread and international criticism, with opponents accusing it of legitimising rape, the marriage of minors and normalising child abuse and sexual exploitation.

The United Nations has spoken out against the bill, warning that it could lead to the increased confidence of rapists without fear of punishment and consequences to their crimes. It has also been denounced by opposition MPs from parties such as the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) which has urged the government to block it from being debated, primarily over fears that it could be used by some to force girls and minors into unwanted marriages.

A similar bill was presented to the Turkish parliament back in 2016, it had proposed the same for rape cases in which “force, threat, or any other restriction on consent” was not used. It was dropped by the ruling AKP government following global outrage.

Turkey has long been subject to scrutiny over the presence of alleged child marriage within the country and its proposed marriage laws. Although the legal age of consent in the Republic is 18, an estimated 482,908 child marriages took place over the past ten years, according to a government report published in 2018.

In 2017, another law was introduced – which was passed – allowing Islamic muftis and scholars to conduct civil marriage ceremonies, resulting in a barrage of criticism due to the perception that it undermines the country’s secular constitution and would allegedly open the way for more child marriages.

According to the Assin Fosu Divisional Police Commander, Chief Supt. Henry B.M Bacho, the 35-year-old Art Star Academy teacher in Assin Andoe, is alleged to have raped an 18-year old girl.

He added that in an attempt to arrest the suspect, his elder brother confirmed he had left the neighborhood.

“Nana Aba reported that her eighteen year old daughter was raped. The medical form was issued to the victim. The police went for an arrest but he was nowhere to be found.

“Later the police found out that he had left the neighbourhood. We are pleading with the public to give us any information towards his whereabouts. He is wanted by the police…”

The suspect is currently at large.

The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs Janet Harriet Akweley Quaye, slapped Mensah with the jail term on Monday after it found him guilty of defilement and sentenced him accordingly.

He had pleaded not guilty to the charge but the court in the judgement held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt to establish his guilt.

“Have mercy”

Mensah virtually became a broken man after his conviction and pleaded with the court to have mercy on him because he had a wife and a child to cater for.

“Please have mercy on me beacuse I am the breadwinner of my family,’’ he said.

Arrest

Mensah was arrested by members of the Achimota Forestry Rapid Response Task Force of the Forestry Commission who chanced on him as he was dressing up just after having sexual intercourse with the 10-year-old girl.

He was then sent to the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the commission, Mrs Edith Esi Ansah who handed him over to the police.

During the trial, Mensah claimed he was arrested by Mrs Ansah and another officer of the commission when he was standing by the roadside.

The presiding judge then asked him why Mrs Ansah or anybody would arrest him at the said roadside.

Mensah answered that one of the officers knew him because he (Mensah) once stole his fowl.

Facts

The facts, as presented by the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agnes Boafo, are that the victim is a pupil while Mensah is unemployed.

On January 17, 2017, Mensah spotted the girl at her school and convinced her to follow him in order to collect some books and pens for her teacher.

The prosecutor said Mensah lured the girl to board a car and took her to the Achimota Forest Reserve, where he asked her to lie on the floor.

“The girl refused and started crying. Mensah slapped her and pulled out a knife, threatening to kill her if she does not comply. He then had sexual intercourse with her,” ASP Boafo said.

The prosecutor explained that luck, however, eluded Mensah when he was spotted by the Achimota Forestry Rapid Response Task Force just as he started dressing after the sexual act.

After a hot chase, ASP Boafo said Mensah was arrested and sent to Mrs Ansah, who lodged a complaint with the police.

He said pornographic movies serve as a source of wrong education for the youth and in event they are unable to subdue their unbridled libido, they could forcibly descend on any female on sight to ejaculate.

According to him, he is against the continuous show of such obscene material on television networks in the country appealing to the various state agencies to crack them by banning such stations from further broadcasting of pornography.

On Abusua Entertainment at the weekend, he observed that teenagers who watch such movies will not only be addicted to sex but have the tendency to be rapists.

‘How many adults are able to control their libidos when they watch pornographic movies,’ he asked.

He called on Ghanaians to protect the good morals of the country saying sex is very powerful than alcohol.

Lawyer Ampaw promised to join the group to seek injunction from the Supreme Court to prevent the three television stations from showing pornographic movies.

Two media practitioners, James Berko and Tommy Annan Forson petitioned the Ministry of Information, Chief Justice, National Media Commission (NMC) and other agencies over pornographic movies aired by owners of Ice TV, TV XYZ and Thunder TV.

Some of the stations have since withdrawn the pornographic content.

Two separate incidents were reported last week after an August last year incident when four women drugged and “sexually molested” a 29-year-old man they had offered a lift.

Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi told local media The Herald that the first incident occured last Saturday when a 37-year-old man boarded a bus with two female passengers and a male driver.

He explained that another female passenger joined the bus before the driver later changed his route to “evade a police roadblock”.

“On the way, one of the females who had boarded the vehicle together with the complainant, drew what appeared to be a pistol and force-marched the complainant into a bushy area along Delport Road,” The Herald quoted the police spokesman.

“One of the females forced the complainant to have sexual intercourse with him without his consent while another female accused forced the complainant to drink an unknown liquid which left the complainant unconscious,” he said.

Chief Superintendent Nyathi also narrated the ordeal of the second victim who was given a lift to Harare by five women. He was offered a drink which left him unconscious.

“When the complainant gained consciousness he discovered that he had been abused,” he said.

He urged the public with information to assist the police with their investigation.

“We would like to urge members of the public to be on the lookout for a group of men and women who are giving unsuspecting victims transport and end up abusing them,” Chief Superintendent Nyathi advised.

Similar incidents also spiraled in September 2015 when two women allegedly raped a man at gunpoint after offering him a lift, The Herald reports.
