Hamilton, a seven-time F1 Drivers’ World Champion, stunned the motorsport world around this time last year when he announced that he would leave Mercedes for Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season.

Now, the veteran English pilot is clad in Scuderia red and ready to try and win both his eighth drivers’ title and Ferrari’s first since Kimi Raikkonen triumphed back in 2007.

“I could not be more excited for the year ahead,” said the 40-year-old. “Moving to Scuderia Ferrari, there’s a lot to reflect on. To anyone considering their next move in 2025: embrace the change. Whether you’re switching industries, learning a new skill, or even just taking on new challenges, remember that reinvention is powerful. Your next opportunity is always within reach. Here’s to 2025 – a year of embracing new opportunities, staying hungry, and driving forward with purpose. Let’s make it one to remember.”

Hamilton, however, faces an uphill task in trying to bring the glory days back to Ferrari. McLaren, who won the Constructors’ Championship in 2024, are expected to be very strong again – with drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri set to be frontrunners – while reigning Drivers’ Champion Max Verstappen remains the best all-rounder and most consistent performer on the grid.

The Dutchman, now a four-time World Champion, has a new teammate in the shape of New Zealander Liam Lawson. “It’s very exciting,” said Verstappen. “We have seen Liam grow within the Red Bull family and it’s going to be very interesting to work together with the team. I really hope we can do a good job together, to try to improve the car and make it more competitive.”

Ahead of the first Grand Prix of the year, other narratives to watch out for include the fate of rookies Oliver Bearman (Haas), Jack Doohan (Alpine), Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls); well as the potential revival of Williams, who have big plans and a world-class driver line-up in the shape of Alexander Albon and multiple race-winner Carlos Sainz Jr.

The 2022 F1 season saw Max Verstappen and Red Bull dominate proceedings, with the Dutchman claiming his second successive drivers’ championship. He won a record 15 races through the course of the year, though he insists that he is not thinking about the chance to become just the fifth driver to win three successive titles, alongside Juan Manuel Fangio, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.

Asked if he had what he needed to join the illustrious list, Verstappen replied: “I mean, we work hard as a team to try and make sure we have the chance to work hard for it again. Only time will tell, I am not even thinking about these things at the moment.

“It is more important we focus on having a competitive car and if we have a competitive car, these things can happen. It is more important we make sure the car is running well, has no issues and is quick at the end of the day.”

Meanwhile, Mercedes and Hamilton endured a tough 2022 after the ‘Silver Arrows’ was unable to adapt adequately to the overhauled regulations, but the seven-time world champion is confident that they will be better in 2023.

“It has been great to get up and running with the W14 [Mercedes’ 2023 car]. It is always a much-anticipated moment for everyone at the factory that has been working so hard; I’m incredibly grateful for all the effort that has gone in,” said Hamilton.

“[Initial testing at Silverstone] has been smooth; we got through a good programme, and we’ve come away with some useful findings. I generally felt comfortable in the car and I’m excited to get going in Bahrain.”

Formula 1: Saudi Arabian Grand Prix preview https://www.adomonline.com/formula-1-saudi-arabian-grand-prix-preview/ Thu, 02 Dec 2021 19:54:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2053460 Viewers on DStv can look forward to the 21st round of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, live from the Jeddah Street Circuit on the evening of Sunday 5 December 2021.

Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton continued his brilliant form in the previous round in Qatar in November, claiming a second successive victory to narrow the gap to Drivers’ Championship leader Max Verstappen to just eight points with two rounds remaining.

The Constructors’ Championship is even tighter, with leaders Mercedes holding only a five-point advantage over Red Bull Racing-Honda, with the teams becoming ever more hostile as the thrilling 2021 campaign draws to a close over there next two races in the Middle East.

Hamilton has called on himself and Mercedes to bring their “AAA game” for the final two rounds of the season in an effort to clinch both titles on offer. The British driver is hoping to become the first to secure eight world championships (he currently shares the record of seven with the great Michael Schumacher).

“I love the close battle and the pressure, the demands it puts on you and the whole team,” Hamilton explained. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it but these next two races need even better performance, so we will be bringing our AAA game for those ones.”

He added, “The last two weeks have been fantastic, it’s just amazing, and there is no time for celebrations. It’s back in, I’ll be back with the team already again next week and back in training tomorrow just staying on it, head down.

“I don’t really have too much emotion because I’m just driven right now, but it is amazing, to be able to close back so many points in these last two races has been important.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has warned that the ‘Silver Arrows’ are bang in form and determined to claim success: “Saudi should be a good track for us, but we know this year when you think it’s a good one it can turn the other way around,” he explained.

“But it’s a long straight, we’ll get our spicy equipment (engine) out for Saudi Arabia that we didn’t use (in Qatar) and hopefully Valtteri (Bottas) is right up there – we need him. But in any case, if everyone finishes the race it will go to Abu Dhabi (the final round).”

Asked if the Mercedes package is currently the best it has been all season, Wolff replied: “Yes, definitely. I think the car is quick on the straight and good around the corners. Degradation works fine – even at races in the Middle East and we have two to come of these – on old tyres. I think we have to push maximum attack. We have to catch up, make some points up and that’s just what we are going to do.”

Grazie Vale – Bidding farewell to a MotoGP legend https://www.adomonline.com/grazie-vale-bidding-farewell-to-a-motogp-legend/ Thu, 11 Nov 2021 15:08:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2042244 Viewers on DStv have been treated to a brilliant 2021 MotoGP World Championship. With the season wrapping up this month, we take a closer look at the behind-the-scenes details which make this, the fastest sport on two wheels, so fascinating and engrossing.

With the major prizes in MotoGP all wrapped up before this final round, attention turns to bidding farewell to an all-time great of the sport: Valentino Rossi. The 42-year-old Italian will be retiring from MotoGP once the Valencian GP wraps up on the afternoon of Sunday 14 November, bringing down the curtain on a 22-year spell in the premier class of motorcycle racing.

In fact, Rossi’s career started way back in 1996 when he first rode in the 125cc (now Moto3) class, winning the World Championship the following year, before two seasons in the 250cc (now Moto2) class, with another world title in 1999, before the final move up to the 500cc (now MotoGP) in 2000.

Rossi will be remembered as one of the greatest bike riders in motorsport history and the statistics back up this claim: he won seven MotoGP World Championships (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009), racked up 89 wins, 199 podiums, 55 pole positions, 76 fastest laps and well over 5,000 career points.

Yet the numbers do not capture the joy, fun and enthusiasm which was characteristic of Rossi’s career: he was a ruthless and brilliant racer, but always enjoyed a joke or prank – even at his own expense! – and will be remembered as much for his laughter and smile as he was for his sheer speed, mercurial riding skills and the iconic number 46 on the front of his bike.

The Italian had several great rivalries through his career, most notably with compatriot Max Biaggi, Sete Gibernau, Casey Stone, Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez, who many see as the successor to Rossi as the greatest rider of his generation.

“Valentino has had tougher rivals than me. He has fought with Biaggi, Gibernau, Lorenzo. What Valentino has done for the history of MotoGP is very good. The motivation in my career depends a lot on my rivals,” said Marquez in honour of Rossi.

For all his success, Rossi has explained that when he looks back on his career, the most important thing he learned is how to work with others and truly be a part of a greater whole.

“For me, when you do sport since you were a child, you learn a lot from sport – also from your person in daily life. I always enjoyed it, I had a great experience,” explained the veteran.

“You’re alone on the bike, but in the end our sport is a team sport, so you learn to work with a team of people who are normally very high level – engineers, mechanics, everything.

“And that’s good, it’s a great experience that makes you grow and makes you stronger, smarter, you understand how to learn from the good things of others. I think this is the best I’ve learned in all these years.”

Rossi may be stepping away from his role as a rider, but his involvement with Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP will still remain strong, as he is the owner of the VR46 team and has an academy which promotes promising young riders into the junior categories – further underlining his legacy in motorcycle racing.

Formula 1, Mexican Grand Prix preview https://www.adomonline.com/formula-1-mexican-grand-prix-preview/ Fri, 05 Nov 2021 18:56:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2039594 Viewers on DStv can look forward to the 18th round of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship, the Mexican Grand Prix, live from the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City on the evening of Sunday 7 November 2021.

SuperSport is definitely your #HomeOfSport and the ultimate destination for motorsport fans.

The last round in the United States saw Red Bull Racing-Honda’s Max Verstappen claim a narrow win ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, thereby opening up a 12-point lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings.

“We lost out at the start, so we had to try and do something else,” Verstappen said after his victory at the Circuit of the Americas. “But the tyre wear is quite high around this track, so we did go aggressive. I was not sure it was going to work, but yeah, the last few laps were fun. A bit sideways through the high-speed corners, but super happy of course to hang on.”

The Dutchman added, “It was tough… the tyres were not in a great state and I knew how much Lewis [Hamilton] was catching. But we managed to hold on at the end. It is quite difficult to pass around here but, of course, when your tyres are going you can lose a lot of lap time.”

In addition, Sergio Perez came home in third place to see Red Bull narrow the gap in the Constructors’ Championship to 23 points – both titles are very much up for grabs as the F1 roadshow heads into the final five races of the 2021 season!

Perez will be eager to impress on his home circuit – and which has generally been a strong venue for Red Bull – though he admits that keeping up with the two title contenders is tough work.

“We have a nice boost but I am so much looking forward to Mexico. It’s a shame I couldn’t keep up with Lewis and Max. Mexico should be a good track for us,” Perez explained.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, however, is wary of being too optimistic ahead of the race at  the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez: “It’s so close together this year between the two teams. There is no reason to assume that it won’t be exciting again in the coming races,” said Horner.

Hopefully we are strong [in Mexico]. Mexico and Brazil have been good circuits for us in the past, but this year it is so close, in almost every race there is only a few tenths difference. I don’t see why it would be different in Mexico.”

Formula 1: Austin duel awaits rivals Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton https://www.adomonline.com/formula-1-austin-duel-awaits-rivals-max-verstappen-and-lewis-hamilton/ Fri, 22 Oct 2021 09:58:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2032451 The 17th round of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship, the United States Grand Prix, live from the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on the evening of Sunday 24 October 2021 live and exclusive to SuperSport on DStv the ultimate destination for motorsport fans.

The previous round in Turkey saw Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas claim a comfortable victory in damp conditions to solidify his hold on third place in the Drivers’ Championship.

“It’s been a while, it feels good,” said Bottas of his first victory of the 2021 season. “To some people, it could have looked easy, but it’s far from that in these conditions. Everything went smoothly, I’m very glad, and the car really has been good in any condition. I had probably the worst race of my career last year and now one of the best.”

Yet the key results in the Drivers’ Championship were behind the Finnish winner, with Red Bull Racing-Honda’s Max Verstappen coming home in second place and rival Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes only recovering to fifth after being hit with a 10-place grid penalty for using a new engine.

This combination means Verstappen now holds a six-point lead over Hamilton at the top of the table, with six rounds of the season remaining (including this American GP). However, Red Bull boss Christian Horner is worried that the ‘Silver Arrows’ have developed their car to a point where they again hold a major advantage.

They [Mercedes] have recently made a significant step forward with the top speed,” Horner explained. “Before, we could still keep up with them by driving with a little less wing, but now we don’t even come close.”

Hamilton, meanwhile, was left frustrated by a late pit call in the Turkish GP which cost him a couple of places. The seven-time World Champion felt he should have stayed out on the worn intermediate tyres to the end of the race.

“I feel like I should have stayed out,” Hamilton explained. “My gut feeling was to stay out, and I feel like that’s what I should have done. So I’m frustrated in myself for not following my gut.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, however, backed his team’s strategy – insisting that while Hamilton had a comfortable buffer to Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez before his stop, he would have lost the positions if he had stayed out on track and maybe not even finished the race.

“We thought that we could maybe hang out there and finish third without stopping or, if a dry line appeared, maybe going to a soft tyre until the end,” Wolff said. “So we balanced between pitting, taking it very conservative fighting against Leclerc and Perez on the track for P3, or taking a little bit of a gamble and either winning or finishing third. Then we saw Leclerc dropping off and Lewis was dropping off and it was clear we wouldn’t make it to the end.”

The United States GP has been dominated by Mercedes in the hybrid era (2014 onwards), with the ‘Silver Arrows’ claiming five wins from a possible six. Bottas was the winner in 2019, which was the last time the race was held, coming home ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen.

Formula 1: Verstappen poised for victory repeat at Monza https://www.adomonline.com/formula-1-verstappen-poised-for-victory-repeat-at-monza/ Tue, 07 Sep 2021 18:27:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2011714 Motorsport enthusiasts can make a date for the 14th round of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship. The Italian Grand Prix, at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza this Sunday 12 September 2021 will be live on your World of Champions, SuperSport.

This past weekend’s race in the Netherlands saw home favourite Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing-Honda claim a dominant victory to reclaim first place in the Drivers’ Championship standings, with the Dutchman now leading Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton by three points.

“Max was remarkable this weekend,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said. “If you drive through the town to the circuit, every house has got Verstappen flags. There is so much support for him, and I have never seen a nation get behind a driver in this manner.”

The ‘Silver Arrows’, however, still have the edge in the Constructors’ Championship, holding a 12-point advantage over the Red Bulls, and they will hope for a strong showing at Monza, where they have been the dominant force in recent years.

“We needed everything perfect to even have the slightest chance,” Hamilton said. “Pit stops, strategy and traffic needed to be on point, but none of those three were ideal. But we got second and third and got really good points in the Constructors’ Championship and we will come back fighting next week.”

This round sees Formula 1 return to one of its spiritual homes, Monza, where Ferrari will be the centre of attention. The Italian team come to their home race on something of a high after drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finished a strong fifth and seventh respectively at the Dutch GP, seeing Ferrari move into third place on the Constructors’ standings ahead of McLaren.

Sainz, though, said he struggled for pace and is hoping for an improvement at Monza: “Really I was struggling a lot with the front and tyres. I was degrading the tyres, it felt like I was sliding a lot and I couldn’t match the pace I had on Friday,” said the Spaniard.

“This means we need to look into what went wrong because I have never felt so slow in a race, to be honest. I was struggling a lot and had no pace whatsoever. I was looking forward to battling for the top five, and [instead] I was defending for the top 10.”

The schedule for this weekend is different from the norm, with Qualifying late on the afternoon of Friday 10 September; a Qualifying Sprint Race on Saturday 11 September; and the Race at the usual mid-afternoon start time on Sunday 12 September.

Formula 1 returns after summer break with Belgian Grand Prix https://www.adomonline.com/formula-1-returns-after-summer-break-with-belgian-grand-prix/ Tue, 24 Aug 2021 17:01:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2005298 After a four-week break, F1 returns with a race at one of its most beloved and iconic venues, with Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps representing an ‘old school’ track that is the longest on the 2021 calendar, features incredible elevations changes, plenty of overtaking spots, and a great technical challenge for the drivers.

Viewers on DStv can look forward to the 12th round of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship, the Belgian Grand Prix, live from Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot on the afternoon of Sunday 29 August 2021.

The previous round in Hungary produced one of the most unpredictable races in recent memory, with Alpine-Renault’s Esteban Ocon claiming a stunning win ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who stormed through the pack after an early pit-stop misjudgment and would have won had he not been involved in an epic scrap with Ocon’s teammate Fernando Alonso.

Nonetheless, Hamilton’s second-place finish allowed him to open an eight-point lead over Red Bull Racing-Honda’s Max Verstappen (who could only manage ninth after sustaining major damage early in the race) in the Drivers’ title race, while Mercedes have a 12-point advantage over the Austrian team in the Constructors’ category.

Despite their surprise win at the Hungaroring, Alpine sporting director Alan Permane has hinted that they do not see the result as coming from a major step forward in performance and adds that the Belgian GP could be a tough one for them.

“I don’t think so, unfortunately,” he explained. “I think if you look at where we were in qualifying [Ocon eighth, Alonso ninth] that track we felt would suit us. I think we are where we are. We will continue learning the car and will continue improving it, but only by small amounts like others will do theirs.

“The next race (at Spa) is a tough one. It’s a long, quick track and we are a bit nervous about that in the race. We don’t feel we have the same raw performance on those very long tracks, the high energy-demand tracks. So we are not thinking that far ahead.”

A team that will head to Spa with confidence behind them is Ferrari, with Carlos Sainz promoted to third place at the last round after a disqualification for Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel. Sainz’ teammate, Charles Leclerc, says friendly competition between himself and the Spaniard is driving the Scuderia forward.

“It is going very well. We are very competitive and when we put the helmets on, we absolutely want to beat one another,” explained Leclerc. “But on the other hand, we know how to work together whenever we are outside the car and this is great to see. It is great for us because it pushes us forward and pushes the team forward.”

Hamilton took victory in last year’s Belgian race and is a four-time winner at Spa, with only the great Michael Schumacher (six) and Ayrton Senna (five) ahead of him in the all-time list. Ferrari have won two of the last three Belgian Grands Prix, while Red Bull’s last triumph in this event was back in 2014.
