The individuals out of five persons were part of a mob that assaulted fire officers of the Komfo Anokye Fire Command when they visited the scene to extinguish the fire that swept through the market.

The trio were charged with conspiracy to commit assault and assault on a public officer.

According to prosecution, the culprits Solomon Anaba, 18, Akongoli Adoko 18, and Lamamia Ishmael 21 who are labourers at the market pelted objects including stones at the officers for their late response to the distress call.

The firefighters are said to have avoided the actions of the hostile crowd to concentrate on dousing the fire but the mob continued their actions.

It resulted in one of the fire officers sustaining deep cuts to the nose.

Prosecution prayed the court to remand the three suspects into custody as they have no permanent place of abode.

The attorney claimed they were squatters and could interfere in the investigations if granted bail.

The three are expected to reappear before the court on March 26, 2024.

Victims were seen on Tuesday morning salvaging burned wares from the scene of the fire during a visit by Nhyira News.

It is not clear if the traders have the blessings of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to reconstruct the market.

It took the Ghana Fire Service several hours to bring the fire, which began on the morning of March 11, 2024, under control.

Though the cause of the fire is still unknown, Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso Boakye, who visited the scene to commiserate with the traders, blamed it on an illegal connection.

Meanwhile, victims of Monday’s fire say thieves have started stealing their wares.

The traders who lost thousands of Ghana cedis to the inferno returned this morning only to see their burned wares stolen by unknown persons.

The MP was at the market on Tuesday to comfort traders to ascertain the extent of damage the fire caused.

Mr Asenso-Boakye also paid separate visits to two households in the constituency gutted by fire over the weekend.

The MP who doubles as the Works and Housing Minister during the visit emphasised the responsible use of LPG especially during the harmattan season.

He urged residents to prioritise safety and implement appropriate measures to prevent the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents.

Taking to Facebook, Mr Asenso-Boakye shared photos from the devastation of the fire whose cause is yet to be established.

About 60 stalls, properties and food items running into thousands of cedis have been destroyed by the fire on Monday.

Clothes, animal proteins and food commodities including local spices have been burnt beyond recognition.

About 60 stalls, properties and food items running into thousands of cedis have been destroyed by the fire.

It took the intervention of four fire tenders to completely douse the fire.

The cause of the fire is however yet to be established as fire officers work around the clock to salvage the debris from the incident.

Traders are salvaging the little of items razed down by the inferno. 

Clothes, animal proteins and food commodities including local spices have been burnt beyond recognition. 

According to the Regional Fire office, they had a distress call from the National office about the fire incident and swiftly rushed to the market ti tend to the blazing inferno.

Speaking to journalists in an interview, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Henry Giwah advised traders and households in the region to take all precautionary measures as the harmattan sets in. 

The racecourse market is a temporary market settlement for traders who were relocated from the old Kejetia market. 

The traders are calling for an expedited completion of the stalled New Kejetia Redevelopment Market.

The fire incident is the second to hit Ghana’s second-largest city in two weeks.
