Expressing opposition to what they described as the “indiscriminate sale” of a site with deep cultural and historical significance to the people of Tema, they stormed the site on Tuesday [Jan 6, 2026] and destroyed a fence wall, the developer had constructed.

The youth insisted that the Meridian Hotel area represented the original settlement of the Tema people before their relocation to present-day Tema Manhean.

It is their argument that the site was not merely a commercial asset but an important symbol of Tema’s heritage and identity, which must be preserved for future generations.

Speaking on behalf of the group, one Benjamin Mensah Commey said the land has, in recent months, become the subject of controversy following reports that it has been sold or leased to a private investor.

He claimed that the traditional authorities in Tema were yet to be formally informed about the identity of the developer and the specific purpose for which the land is being redeveloped.

“Government took this land without paying a dime to the people of Tema, and today the same land is being disposed off without proper consultation,” he stated.

Meanwhile, checks by Graphic Online at the TDC Ghana Ltd indicate that the Divestiture Implementation Committee (DIC) authorised the issuance of a fresh sublease on the defunct property and its lands to a developer in the year 2007.

The developer, according to a source, legally secured a 50-year lease from the TDC in 2007 to demolish the existing structure and redevelop it into a modern, fit-for-purpose hospitality facility.

The old Meridian Hotel currently stands as an abandoned structure, which has become a haven for drug addicts, thieves, and unauthorised parking space for articulated trucks.

Asutifi North Assembly Members plan protest over Newmont’s road works https://www.adomonline.com/asutifi-north-assembly-members-plan-protest-over-newmonts-road-works/ Tue, 06 Jan 2026 14:21:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2616512 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have announced plans to stage a demonstration against Newmont Gold Ghana over what they describe as substandard town road construction in the area.

The planned protest was announced at a press conference held in Kenyasi, where the Assembly Member for the Asukese Electoral Area, Anane John Kwasi, said the demonstration will take place on January 20, 2026.

He explained that Assembly Members, CSOs, and the youth will embark on a protest and picketing exercise against the mining company over the quality of roads constructed in communities where it operates.

According to him, the affected communities include Kenyasi No.1, Kenyasi No.2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Womahinso.

Mr. Anane alleged that the double-seal town roads, locally known as sapete, constructed by Newmont do not last due to poor workmanship and the use of inferior materials.

He said several roads constructed in Gyedu, Ntotroso, and Womahinso have deteriorated in less than a year, stressing that residents will not allow similar works to be carried out in Kenyasi. He added that the communities are demanding asphalt roads instead.

Efforts by Adom News to reach Newmont Gold Ghana for its response were unsuccessful, as calls to the company went unanswered.

Over 6,000 teachers threaten legal action and street protests over unpaid arrears https://www.adomonline.com/over-6000-teachers-threaten-legal-action-and-street-protests-over-unpaid-arrears/ Mon, 05 Jan 2026 07:07:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2616011 The academic year is set for a turbulent start as the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers has issued a final ultimatum to the government, warning of a massive street demonstration and a looming legal battle over a year’s worth of unpaid salary arrears.

Despite a series of protests held throughout 2025, the group claims that over 6,000 teachers across the country are currently being pushed into “abject poverty” due to administrative delays and the failure of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to issue necessary staff identification cards.

The issue centres on a discrepancy in compensation.

According to the Coalition, many of its members have been at their posts for between 12 and 15 months, yet have only received payment for a mere two months of service.

Lead Convenor of the Coalition, Simon Kofi Nartey, speaking in an interview with Citi FM on Sunday, January 4, highlighted the immense psychological and financial toll the delay is taking on educators.

“We are calling on our employer and the government at large to listen to us and have our arrears paid so that we can all have our peace of mind to continue with the good work that we are doing for the country,” he said.

A primary hurdle in the payment process is the non-issuance of Staff Identification Cards.

Without these IDs, teachers are unable to be fully integrated into the mechanised payroll system, leaving them in a state of professional limbo.

Mr. Nartey warned that the window for a peaceful resolution is closing fast. He demanded that all outstanding IDs be processed before the January 2026 payroll is finalised.

“The few that are left to be issued with their staff IDs should have it before this month’s salary comes, before we hit the street once again,” he added.

Beyond street protests, the Coalition is now consulting with legal experts to file a suit against the state. The group argues that the current system is arbitrary, pointing out that teachers who were recruited at the same time and posted to the same regions have seen vastly different outcomes.

“Some of us started work with colleagues who have received their salaries in full, while others are still going through this ordeal. It is just unfair, and it calls for legal action to be taken against the government,” Nartey emphasised.

We lack development, our lands are being wrecked – Kwabeng community blames chief https://www.adomonline.com/we-lack-development-our-lands-are-being-wrecked-kwabeng-community-blames-chief/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 10:46:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608071 Tensions are rising in Kwabeng, the capital of Atiwa District in Ghana’s Eastern Region, as angry youth protest against widespread illegal mining (galamsey) activities.

The protesters are accusing their chief of failing to act while the community suffers severe environmental damage.

Addo Dankwa Jnr., a youth leader, told Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem that residents are “not at peace and are not happy,” emphasizing that repeated petitions to the palace regarding land destruction have gone unanswered.

“We lack development, and the galamsey activities are excessive. Soon, we may have nowhere to bury our loved ones because all our lands are being destroyed,” he lamented.

He warned that the situation is fueling frustration and lawlessness in the community, which could escalate into conflict if urgent action is not taken.

According to Dankwa, the youth are calling on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to intervene, halt an upcoming gathering planned by the chief, and ensure that justice is served.

The protest comes amid national concerns over the impact of galamsey on water bodies, farmlands, and community safety.

“The people have repeatedly petitioned the palace for change, but the kingsmen are still not listening. The current situation is troubling, and the chief is not addressing these issues. We urge the IGP to step in, stop the chief from holding gatherings, and ensure our concerns are addressed,” he added.

Dressed in red and holding placards, the protesters warned that they will fiercely resist attempts to introduce mining activities, which they say could destroy their lands, pollute water bodies, and threaten their livelihoods.

Mining has long been a concern in the area, with locals citing environmental degradation and health risks experienced by neighbouring communities affected by similar operations.

The demonstrators called on the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament to act swiftly to protect the community from what they described as impending environmental harm.

Youth leader Emmanuel Agyekum, who spoke to the media, said the people of Amantena remain united and resolute in their demand for a mining-free community.

At a press conference, SRC President Yeboah Dennis Nkrumah said both students and staff were unhappy with the development, describing Dr. Ibrahim’s leadership as transformational and crucial to the institution’s growth.

According to him, the Director’s efforts had helped resolve long-standing challenges, including inadequate accommodation and lecture halls, resulting in increased student enrollment and improved academic performance.

“Since Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim assumed office, the College of Health, Yamfo has risen to become one of the best in the country. His transfer will greatly affect our progress,” he stated.

TEIN Women Commissioners, Boakye Pokuaa Agnes and Irene Affum Bema, also praised Dr. Ibrahim, noting that campus security had significantly improved under his leadership through the installation of CCTV cameras and the construction of a perimeter wall.

The students are urging authorities to reconsider the transfer, insisting that Dr. Ibrahim’s continued leadership is vital to the school’s ongoing development.

Okoe Boye justifies NPP protest, says free speech is under attack https://www.adomonline.com/okoe-boye-justifies-npp-protest-says-free-speech-is-under-attack/ Tue, 23 Sep 2025 09:35:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2581356 Former Minister of Health Dr Bernard Okoe Boye has justified the New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth wing’s protest taking place in Accra today, Tuesday, September 23, arguing that the most fundamental feature of Ghana’s democracy, freedom of speech, is under serious threat.

Speaking to JoyNews at the protest grounds, Dr Okoe Boye said, “We are here because the most fundamental feature of a democracy is being attacked and it’s being threatened. And that fundamental feature is the freedom of speech,” he stated.

The former minister stressed that democracy thrives on tolerance of divergent views, even when expressed crudely.

“By virtue of my level of education, training, and personal values, there is a way I will put a point across which might look to you very proper. But you have others who also want to make a point but might not have the training and intellect to do so. They will speak in a blunt manner, sometimes in an insulting manner, but the beauty of democracy is that all such people are tolerated in society.”

He cautioned against arresting people for their opinions, insisting it sets a dangerous precedent.

“Immediately somebody can be arrested and handcuffed for talking in a way that in another person’s judgment is not proper; it means all of us are in danger. You might think you are speaking well today, but the one in power tomorrow will say that your speech is not proper and that is a threat.”

Dr Okoe Boye added that silencing citizens through fear of arrest could kill Ghana’s dynamism and innovation.

“All democracies or societies that were successful in the past, what made them lose their success was the culture of silence. Because people are being arrested for what they post on TikTok, or how they speak, it will get to a time before someone will talk; the person will think twice… and when people stop speaking, the society is no more dynamic and we will lose our innovativeness and drive.”

He explained that the protest had two key aims: to defend free speech and to push back against what he described as unprofessional conduct by the police.

“We are here for two reasons: to make sure that freedom of speech is protected, and secondly, to protest against the behaviour of institutions like the police, who are expected to be professional and neutral.”

“Why would you say that Chairman Azorka of the NDC has been arrested and given bail when there is no picture of his interaction in his arrest, but when you get Abronye DC, you put him in handcuffs, take a picture, and it goes viral on NDC platforms? Why do you go to Sir Obama, an NPP activist, at 4 a.m., break through his door, and enter his room—not that he has touched or harmed anybody—but because he posted a picture on Facebook? I mean, these are dangerous precedents,” he added.

He concluded by challenging the record of President John Dramani Mahama, suggesting that despite his calm appearance, his administration is presiding over worrying democratic reversals.

“Let’s all be honest. If anybody told you that NDC under President JDM will do this, would you believe it? Look at the nature of President John Mahama on the outside—very calm, very tolerant—yet under him, look at what is happening.”

Background
The protest was largely triggered by the arrest of Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, who serves as the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman. He was detained on September 8 and charged with offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, as well as publishing false news.

Beyond Abronye’s case, the demonstration also reflects mounting frustrations over what the party describes as intimidation and harassment of its members.

These include incidents involving high-profile figures such as Chairman Wontumi (Bernard Antwi-Boasiako) and a number of social media activists sympathetic to the NPP.

Protesters are demanding an end to what they view as politically motivated arrests and remands that disproportionately affect opposition members.

During the demonstration, the farmers expressed deep frustration over the situation, warning that if not addressed, it could exacerbate poverty levels in the area.

They warned that the situation is also disrupting economic activities and affecting travel to the Eastern, Ashanti, and other northern regions.

According to the statement, the Minister for Roads and Highways had earlier assured them that the road would be fixed within six weeks, but that timeline has passed with no improvement.

The transport operators have given government one week to begin meaningful repairs or face a mass protest, which will include parking all commercial vehicles serving the route.

They are also calling on motorists, commuters, residents, and the general public to join the planned protest to pressure authorities into action.

Farmers in Obom, Addo Kofi, Obakowa, Yahoman, and Agbozo—communities within the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region—are up in arms following the destruction of over 200 acres of farmland by illegal sand winners.

The affected farmers say the sand winning activities were carried out without court orders or compensation, wiping out their livelihoods overnight. Crops including cassava, maize, sweet potatoes, sugarcane, and plantain were allegedly cleared by the operators, leaving the communities on the brink of hunger.

During a protest in the area, the aggrieved farmers made a desperate appeal to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and former President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and halt the destruction.

Some of the farmers who spoke to Adom News warned that if authorities fail to act, they may be forced to arm themselves in self-defense.

The Mantse of Yahoman, Nii Yaaho, described the situation as dire and appealed to the Minister of Agriculture, the IGP, and President Mahama to act swiftly to protect the affected communities.

Also commenting on the issue, the Omankrado of Obom, Nii Addo Barima, called for military intervention. He alleged that the sand winners operate under the protection of heavily armed land guards, heightening tensions and fears among residents.

The farmers are demanding justice, compensation, and an immediate end to the sand winning activities threatening their survival.

The demonstrators cited the continued abandonment of key community projects — a library and an Astroturf — both left uncompleted for more than 13 years. They also highlighted a dangerously dilapidated bridge in the area, describing it as a “death trap.”

“We have waited long enough. The bridge is a hazard, and the library and Astroturf are just wasting away,” a protester told the press during the protest.

Clad in red armbands and carrying placards, the protesters chanted and marched through the town, calling on the MP to take immediate steps to address their concerns.

They demanded that Mr. Aboagye prioritise the completion of the stalled projects and act swiftly to fix the collapsing bridge, which they say poses a major safety risk to residents.

The demonstration underscores growing frustration in the constituency over unmet infrastructure needs and a perceived lack of accountability.

The demonstration follows the rejection of the initial nominee, Abraham Henry Arthur, who secured only 9 out of 26 votes from Assembly Members.

In response, President Mahama nominated Rev. Atta Mensah as a replacement. However, some party members have rejected the new nominee, insisting that Rev. Mensah is not their preferred candidate.

The protesters are calling on the President to reinstate Abraham Henry Arthur, whom they say has already done significant groundwork in the constituency and enjoys broad support from party members.

“We were not involved in the process, and we believe the decision does not reflect the will of the grassroots,” said Bernard Mensah, who spoke on behalf of some branch executives.

They are urging President Mahama to reconsider the nomination in the interest of party unity and effective local development.

You’re not more Ashanti than me – Criss Waddle to NPP supporters over his criticisms https://www.adomonline.com/youre-not-more-ashanti-than-me-criss-waddle-to-npp-supporters-over-his-criticisms/ Tue, 06 May 2025 13:03:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2532009 Ghanaian rapper and AMG Business CEO, Criss Waddle, has addressed criticism from supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following his recent remarks on the country’s political discourse.

The backlash stems from Waddle’s reaction to a protest staged against President John Mahama, calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

In his view, the demonstration was premature, considering the administration is still in its early days.

Drawing comparisons, Waddle referenced what he described as eight years of poor governance under the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government, arguing that if Ghanaians endured that period, then the current administration deserves the same level of patience and scrutiny.

Amid claims of political bias, the rapper defended his stance as nonpartisan, citing his history of openly criticizing both parties when necessary.

He reminded critics of his public disapproval of former President Mahama during the height of the 2015 power crisis, known as ‘dumsor.’

He challenged those bringing in tribal undertones, insisting that he is also of Ashanti heritage, the same as the majority of NPP sympathizers.

Waddle urged Ghanaians to move beyond party lines and focus on holding all leaders accountable, regardless of their political affiliation.

]]> Political parties announce nationwide protest over Chief Justice’s suspension https://www.adomonline.com/political-parties-announce-nationwide-protest-over-chief-justices-suspension/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 09:35:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528605 A coalition of political parties has scheduled a nationwide protest for Monday, May 5, 2025, following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting held on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

The coalition includes the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), among others.

They argued that the suspension of the Chief Justice is not an isolated incident but part of a broader scheme to “capture every arm of government, even the judiciary.”

They cited a previous failed attempt by the NDC in 2010 to remove the former Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, Ghana’s first female to hold the position.

“History is being repeated. We must not remain silent.”

May be an image of text

Describing the suspension as a “reckless assault” on Ghana’s democracy, the parties have pledged to defend the constitution and uphold the nation’s cherished democratic principles.

“The political parties observed that the blatant disregard for the rule of law is not merely a political matter but rather an assault on the very soul of our democracy. The disturbing trend of judicial intimidation by the NDC is not new. The pattern is undeniable,” the group noted in a statement.

May be an image of text

“We will not allow political power to erode the foundations of our republic,” they declared, warning that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which currently leads the government, is deliberately attempting to compromise all independent institutions.

May be an image of text

The group has alleged that after reconstituting the judiciary with “loyalist appointments,” the Mahama-led government plans to pursue constitutional interpretation at the Supreme Court, aimed at legitimising a third-term bid in the 2028 elections.

They have therefore rallied all citizens, civil society organizations, and religious groups to join the non-partisan, national call to defend judicial independence.

“Is this the future Mahama promised?” the statement questioned. “A regime of fear, where livelihoods are sacrificed on the altar of political vengeance?”

“To remain indifferent is to endorse the rise of an authoritarian state. Be a citizen, not a spectator. Stand for democracy. Oppose dictatorship.”

Students of Hwidiem Senior High School protest over deteriorating infrastructure https://www.adomonline.com/students-of-hwidiem-senior-high-school-protest-over-deteriorating-infrastructure/ Tue, 08 Apr 2025 14:58:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2523026

Students of Hwidiem Senior High School (HWISEC) in the Ahafo Region have staged a protest to voice their frustration over the deteriorating infrastructure at their school, which they claim is hindering their academic progress.

The protest saw students marching through the streets of Hwidiem to bring public attention to the issues affecting their learning environment.

Senior Boys Prefect, Sulemani Yaya, spoke to Adom News following the protest, outlining several critical concerns.

He highlighted the deplorable condition of the girls’ toilet facility, which poses serious health risks. He also expressed worry about the boys’ dormitory, describing it as structurally weak and on the brink of collapse, with insufficient beds forcing many students to sleep on the floor.

Additionally, Yaya raised concerns about the lack of desks and chairs, which affects the learning environment, and questioned the use of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) funds, claiming students have not seen any tangible benefits from the money collected over the years.

Asutifi South District Chief Executive (DCE) nominee, Mr. Asabre Donkor, acknowledged the legitimacy of the students’ concerns.

He credited the timely intervention of key stakeholders, including traditional leaders, police, and officials from the Ghana Education Service (GES), for preventing damage to school property during the protest.

Donkor assured the students that steps would be taken to address the infrastructural challenges to improve the school environment and support effective teaching and learning.

5 dead as Islamic protesters clash with Nigerian military, police https://www.adomonline.com/5-dead-as-islamic-protesters-clash-with-nigerian-military-police/ Mon, 31 Mar 2025 08:50:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2520268 Nigerian police said on Saturday they had come under intense gunfire a day earlier in a neighbourhood of the capital, Abuja, during clashes between security forces and Shi’ite Muslim protesters that led to several reported deaths.

On Friday, dozens of the group’s members marched in solidarity with Palestine, but violence broke out when they clashed with soldiers and police.

Critics say Nigerian security forces have increasingly resorted to using force, including live ammunition, to quell protests, and that this could radicalise groups like IMN.

Police in a statement on Saturday accused the protesters of “a violent assault” on security personnel armed with firearms and other lethal weapons in Abuja’s Wuse 2 neighbourhood.

One member of the security forces had died and 19 suspects had been arrested, he said.

Videos circulating on social media platform X showed protesters waving a Palestinian flag and throwing stones at an army vehicle, followed by the sound of gunfire.

Sidi Munir Sokoto, a senior IMN member blamed the military for the violence, saying the protest was peaceful. He put the death toll at five.

An army spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

Isa Sanusi, head of Amnesty International Nigeria, called for an impartial investigation.

“The army used live ammunition on the protesters. It appears they approach IMN protesters always with the intent to kill,” Sanusi told Reuters, also putting the death toll at five.

Bibiani residents protest against Asante Gold Corporation over health and safety concerns https://www.adomonline.com/bibiani-residents-protest-against-asante-gold-corporation-over-health-and-safety-concerns/ Wed, 22 Jan 2025 11:13:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2495780 Residents of Bibiani Old Town and Zongo in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region have staged a protest against Asante Gold Corporation, demanding relocation due to severe health and safety concerns linked to the company’s mining activities.

The residents highlighted the devastating impact of frequent blasting on their health and livelihoods.

They reported that the blasts have caused significant structural damage to their homes, with walls and foundations developing cracks. Massive dust clouds generated by the blasts settle on their homes, food, and water sources, exacerbating health risks.

Speaking to the media, protesters shared accounts of respiratory illnesses, including asthma and bronchitis, which they attribute to prolonged exposure to dust and pollutants.

Additionally, they alleged that the company’s operations have contaminated their water sources, rendering them undrinkable. The mining activities have also reportedly destroyed farmlands, depriving residents of their primary source of income.

Zakari Mubarik, Assemblyman for the Bibiani Zongo Electoral Area, joined the residents in appealing to Asante Gold Corporation to relocate affected communities to a safer area.

The residents are urging the company to address their grievances and prioritize the well-being of the affected communities.

29 Nigerian children may be sentenced to death for protesting against cost-of-living crisis https://www.adomonline.com/29-nigerian-children-may-be-sentenced-to-death-for-protesting-against-cost-of-living-crisis/ Sat, 02 Nov 2024 15:05:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2467615 Twenty-nine children could be facing the death penalty in Nigeria after they were arraigned Friday for participating in a protest against the country’s record cost-of-living crisis.

Four of them collapsed in court due to exhaustion before they could enter a plea.

A total of 76 protesters were charged with 10 felony counts, including treason, destruction of property, public disturbance and mutiny, according to the charge sheet seen by The Associated Press.

According to the charge sheet, the minors ranged in age from 14 to 17 years old.

Frustration over the cost-of-living crisis has led to several mass protests in recent months. In August, at least 20 people were shot dead and hundreds more were arrested at a protest demanding better opportunities and jobs for young people.

The death sentence was introduced in the 1970s in Nigeria, but there have been no executions in the country since 2016.

Akintayo Balogun, a private lawyer based in Abuja, said the Child Rights Act does not allow any child to be subject to criminal proceedings and sentenced to death.

“So taking minors before a federal high court is wrong, ab initio, except if the government is able to prove that the boys are all above 19 years,” Balogun said.

The court eventually granted 10 million naira ($5,900) bail to each the defendants and imposed stringent conditions they are yet to meet, Marshal Abubakar, counsel to some of the boys, said.

“A country that has a duty to educate its children will decide to punish those children. These children have been in detention for 90 days without food,” Abubakar said.

Yemi Adamolekun, executive director of Enough is Enough, a civil society organization promoting good governance in Nigeria, said authorities have no business prosecuting children.

“The chief justice of Nigeria should be ashamed, she is a woman and a mother,” Adamolekun said.

Despite being one of the top crude oil producers in Africa, Nigeria remains one of the world’s poorest countries. Chronic corruption means the lifestyle of its public officials rarely mirrors that of the general population. Medical professionals often strike to protest meager wages.

The country’s politicians and lawmakers, often accused of corruption, are some of the best-paid in Africa. Even the president’s wife — her office nowhere in the constitution — is entitled to SUVs and other luxuries funded by taxpayers.

Nigeria’s population of over 210 million people — the continent’s largest — is also among the hungriest in the world and its government has struggled to create jobs. The inflation rate is also at 28-year high and the local naira currency at record lows against the dollar.

On Thursday, Nigeria was classified as a “hotspot of very high concern,” in a report from United Nations’ food agencies, as large numbers of people are facing or are projected to face critical levels of acute food insecurity in the West African country.

Breman Essiam residents protest over abandoned road project and dust pollution https://www.adomonline.com/breman-essiam-residents-protest-over-abandoned-road-project-and-dust-pollution/ Thu, 31 Oct 2024 11:47:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2466582 Residents and assembly members of Breman Essiam in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District have staged a protest against the government and the Ministry of Roads and Highways over an abandoned road project causing severe dust-related health issues in their community.

The project, intended to expand the Ajumako-Breman Essiam road, was left incomplete when the contractor halted work more than a year ago.

Speaking on the issue, residents expressed frustration, explaining that the road was initially in good condition but was selected for expansion by the government to improve transportation.

Although significant preliminary work on the road has been completed, the project was abandoned before the bitumen surfacing could be laid.

The resulting dust has severely impacted residents, especially those with respiratory issues like asthma. Some residents also shared that they can no longer wear white clothes due to the constant dust.

Additionally, three assembly members from the Breman Essiam Electoral Area are calling on the government to compel the contractor to resume work and complete the road by December 7, 2024.

They emphasized that completing the road is essential not only for health reasons but also for enhancing transportation and overall community well-being.

The Campus Association of Students with Special Needs (CASSN) has given authorities a two-week ultimatum to disburse the funds or face demonstrations.

The Association said many of its members rely solely on these bursaries to cover their tuition fees for the upcoming academic year, and the continued delay is causing significant distress.

Despite submitting the necessary documents over seven months ago, students have received no updates, with repeated follow-ups yielding the same response.

“Despite submitting our details and information over seven months ago, students with special needs have yet to receive any information regarding our annual bursary payments. Repeated follow-ups have yielded the same disheartening response: there are no funds available.”

CASSN is therefore demanding a clear timeline for the disbursement and a commitment from the government to ensure students with special needs are not disadvantaged.

The delay has created widespread anxiety and frustration among the student community, leaving them in financial uncertainty.

Catholic Archdiocese leads protest walk against galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/catholic-archdiocese-leads-protest-walk-against-galamsey/ Fri, 11 Oct 2024 11:32:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2459398 The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra has organized a protest march against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, following a “Service of Preparation” held at the Holy Spirit Cathedral.

The event, held today, Friday, October 11, 2024, drew Catholic worshippers and environmental activists from various parts of the capital.

During the service, Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi, SVD, called on God to intervene in the fight against environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

He encouraged the participants to stay committed to advocating for the protection of Ghana’s natural resources.

Worshippers, activists, and members of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey” group assembled at the Cathedral, holding placards with messages demanding an end to illegal mining operations.

The protest, which was peaceful, was supported by police officers who guided the demonstrators along their planned routes.

Emmanuel Wilson Jnr, the chief crusader of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey,” reiterated that while the president’s directive for military involvement and collaboration with the small-scale miners’ association is a temporary measure, a total ban on mining activities is necessary to safeguard Ghana’s environment.

The protest walk is part of continuous efforts by religious and civil society groups to intensify the fight against galamsey, which has caused widespread environmental damage throughout the country.

Following the service, participants began their walk, holding their placards high as they marched through the streets.

Police deny forcing arrested protesters to re-enact democracy hub demonstration https://www.adomonline.com/police-deny-forcing-arrested-protesters-to-re-enact-democracy-hub-demonstration/ Mon, 07 Oct 2024 14:52:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2457619 The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims that individuals arrested during Democracy Hub’s protest were coerced or forced to re-enact the demonstration at the 37 Intersection.

Reports have surfaced suggesting that some of the detained protesters were compelled to return to the scene for a recreation of the events that occurred on Sunday, September 22.

However, the Police, in a statement, clarified that crime scene reconstructions are a standard investigative procedure worldwide, emphasizing that those involved participated willingly.

Additionally, the police dismissed allegations that unfamiliar officers, who had no prior interaction with the accused, were used for the reconstruction.

The statement highlighted that the detectives involved have been part of the investigative team from the beginning.

“As the public may recall, several attempts have been made since this incident, to feed the public with falsehood, including the arrest of a 12-year-old child and a pregnant woman, all in the bid to create disaffection towards the Police. We see this one, as one of such attempts, and we urge the public to disregard it,” the statement read.

Democracy Hub members staged a three-day protest from Saturday, September 21 to Monday, September 23, calling for an end to illegal mining.

Over 50 protesters were arrested, with 14 of them granted bail as of today, October 7, while the rest remain on remand.

Below is the full statement by the Police:

POLICE REFUTE CLAIMS OF FORCING ACCUSED PERSONS TO RE-ENACT PROTEST AT 37 INTERSECTION

1. The Ghana Police Service has taken notice of a statement allegedly issued by the lawyers of the accused persons standing trial for their conduct during the democracy hub demonstration, claiming that the Police forced their clients to re-enact the protest at the 37 Intersection.

2. We wish to state that this is untrue and the facts are as follows:

a. Crime scene reconstruction, as part of an investigation, is a standard practice used by law enforcement agencies worldwide and is in full compliance with our established procedures. The Ghana Police Service has been using this practice since time immemorial.

b. The Police detectives who conducted the crime-scene reconstruction are part of the officers who have been working on the investigation since the inception of this case. The claims that they are not known to the accused persons are, therefore, not true.

c. In accordance with standard procedures, the accused persons were informed of their right to have legal representation during the crime scene reconstruction process. Some of the accused persons opted to take part in the crime scene reconstruction process without their lawyers’ presence. Other accused persons, however, insisted on their right to their lawyers and the reconstruction process for these persons is yet to be done. It is, therefore, untrue, that the accused persons were coerced or threatened with harm, to take part in the crime-scene reconstruction.

3. As the public may recall, several attempts have been made since this incident, to feed the public with falsehood, including the arrest of a 12-year-old child and a pregnant woman, all in the bid to create disaffection towards the Police. We see this one, as one of such attempts, and we urge the public to disregard it.

Fetish Priests Association to embark on nationwide protest over galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/fetish-priests-association-to-embark-on-nationwide-protest-over-galamsey/ Sun, 06 Oct 2024 14:13:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2457319 The Fetish Priests Association of Ghana, led by its President, Kwaku Bonsam, has announced plans to embark on a nationwide protest in response to the growing menace of illegal mining.

The association has expressed deep concern over the alarming rate at which the country’s natural resources, particularly water bodies and forests, are being destroyed due to galamsey activities.

Speaking on Kasapa FM, Kwaku Bonsam emphasized that the widespread destruction of the environment by these illegal miners has gone beyond tolerable limits.

According to him, the association, comprising over 2000 members from across the country, is ready to take decisive action to protect Ghana’s natural heritage.

He noted that the damage caused by galamsey has led to the pollution of water sources, destruction of fertile lands, and a looming environmental crisis that threatens future generations.

Kwaku Bonsam revealed that beyond the peaceful demonstration, the association is preparing for a more spiritual approach to deal with those involved in galamsey.

He warned that the gods of the land would not sit idle while the nation’s resources are being desecrated.

In his words, the protest will be followed by a wave of “unexplained curses and deaths” within two weeks of the demonstration.

He called on all traditional leaders, environmentalists, and Ghanaians to join in the protest to safeguard the environment for future generations.

Kwaku Bonsam also urged the government to take immediate and concrete steps to halt the galamsey operations that have led to devastating consequences, including the contamination of major rivers like the Pra, Ankobra, and Birim, which serve as critical water sources for many communities.

According to him, the fetish priests have long been seen as custodians of the land, and they are obligated to protect it from any form of destruction.

This announcement comes at a time when the issue of galamsey has sparked national debate, with various stakeholders calling for stricter measures to end the practice.

Despite several attempts by the government to curb the menace, including military interventions and legal actions, galamsey activities continue to thrive, particularly in rural communities where law enforcement is often weak.

Remanding Democracy Hub demonstrators for 2 weeks is an abuse of their rights – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/remanding-democracy-hub-demonstrators-for-2-weeks-is-an-abuse-of-their-rights-mahama/ Thu, 26 Sep 2024 13:43:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2453610 Former President, John Dramani Mahama has criticized the two-week remand of Democracy Hub demonstrators, calling it an abuse of their rights.

In a post shared on X, Mahama described the decision as “high-handed”.

He emphasized the need to balance maintaining law and order with protecting citizens’ freedoms.

“The youth of Ghana have a right to engage in manifestations to protect their future, especially on critical issues like environmental destruction caused by illegal mining. draconian judicial decisions such as this won’t stop them from speaking out,” Mahama stated.

He urged authorities to review the decision and grant bail to the protesters, noting that harsh judicial rulings would not silence them.

“The authorities must request the judge to review the remand decision and grant them bail immediately,” Mahama shared.

This comes after the arrest of 28 demonstrators, including bystanders, during a protest organized by Democracy Hub against illegal mining and state capture.

The demonstrators were charged with unlawful assembly and remanded into custody for two weeks, sparking widespread public outcry.

Several organizations have also criticized the police and judiciary’s handling of the situation, calling the arrests and remands an abuse of power.

PPP condemns Police handling of Democracy Hub protesters https://www.adomonline.com/ppp-condemns-police-handling-of-democracy-hub-protesters/ Thu, 26 Sep 2024 12:51:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2453607 The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has expressed concern over the treatment of demonstrators from the Democracy Hub by the Ghana Police Service and Judiciary.

The party criticized the arrest of minors, a four-month-pregnant woman, and other bystanders who were not part of the protest but were caught up in the incident.

PPP condemned the Police for denying lawyers access to the arrested individuals and failing to disclose their whereabouts before presenting them in court.

The party further criticized the Judiciary, stating it was disappointing that an independent judge remanded the demonstrators, including the pregnant woman and her husband, into custody without taking their pleas.

In a statement, the PPP called on the Judiciary to protect the rights of Ghanaians, especially the vulnerable, against what it termed as the excessive power of the executive.

The party also expressed dismay that a peaceful protest against illegal mining (galamsey) attracted such harsh measures from authorities, questioning why the real perpetrators of galamsey continue to operate with impunity.

The PPP urged the immediate release of the demonstrators, arguing their continued detention is unjustified.

Read the full statement below:

To all Media Houses:

PPP CONDEMNS HIGH HANDED TREATMENT OF PROTESTORS BY THE POLICE AND JUDICIARY.

The Progressive People’s Party has noted with concerns how the Ghana Police Service and the Judiciary have dealt with the Democracy Hub demonstrators. Of much concern is the arrest of minors, as well as a 4-month-old pregnant woman and others who clearly could not have been part of the demonstration as such; but they simply found themselves at the scene and got arrested.

We condemn the refusal of the Police Administration to allow lawyers access to the arrested
persons and their failure to disclose their locations before taking them to the court on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is even very disappointing that for persons who are alleged to have been engaged in minor offences like unlawful assembly, an independent Judge decided not to even take their pleas but remanded them into prison and police custody including the 4-month-old pregnant woman and her husband who were simply bystanders but were mistakenly arrested.

We call on the Judiciary to be bold to defend the rights of all Ghanaians and the vulnerable
against the all-powerful executive authority of this country. We are worried that Galamsey seems to be winning the fight and that a mere demonstration against galamsey has attracted such high-handedness from the Police Service and the Judiciary.

What is more lawless and disorder than the galamsey activities ongoing with impunity?
We do not believe that the police are actually interested in maintaining law and order, but they are being deployed by higher authority to divert attention from the critical issues of galamsey and to abuse police powers in an attempt to instil fear into the people.

The fight against galamsey is a patriotic duty and we expect the police and the judiciary to join but not to frustrate it. We call for the immediate release of the demonstrators since their continued detention is unjustified.

#ReOccupyJulorbiHouse: Brother of detained blogger speaks out https://www.adomonline.com/reoccupyjulorbihouse-brother-of-detained-blogger-speaks-out/ Wed, 25 Sep 2024 12:26:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2453154 Brother of a detained protestor, Akwesi Addo has voiced his distress after his sister was arrested during a recent demonstration organized by Democracy Hub from September 21 to 23.

The protest aimed to address issues of economic mismanagement and other national concerns.

However, the second day of the demonstration saw tensions rise, culminating in clashes between protesters and Police, leading to multiple arrests.

According to Akwesi, his sister was filming a vlog for his Tiktok page at the time of her arrest.

“Someone watching her livestream called to inform me that she had been taken by the police. I couldn’t believe it; she wasn’t even part of the protest, just documenting it,” he said on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Wednesday.

He also mentioned that, his family faced difficulties in locating her after the arrest.

“We tried to follow up with the Police at the Greater Accra Regional Command, and they told us that they didn’t know where she was because the arrested individuals were dispersed across several police stations. We eventually found her at Kaneshie, but we were denied access to her.”

“Our major concern is her health. My sister has asthma and diabetes but hasn’t received her medication since being arrested. The arrested individuals have not been provided with food or water since they were detained, and my sister does not look okay,” he said.

He also expressed frustration over the lack of legal support for the detained protesters, stating that lawyers have not been allowed access to their clients, and the detainees have not been properly interrogated.

“The protestors’ lawyers have not been given access to them, and they have not been properly interrogated. Almost 12 people were given the same charges,” he noted.

We’ll defy injunction orders and protest – Barker-Vormawor https://www.adomonline.com/well-defy-injunction-orders-and-protest-barker-vormawor/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 21:49:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450805 Convener of #FixTheCountry, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, says they would defy the court order injuncting them to demonstrate.

He argued that the injunction, secured ex-parte by the police, is unconstitutional, especially regarding the right to freedom of assembly.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on September 18, Mr Barker-Vormawor pointed out that they notified the police of their protest three months ago.

He questioned the basis of the court’s decision, adding that they would proceed even if they were arrested.

“Our courts are clear that on questions on freedom of assembly, you cannot obtain an ex-parte injunction against us. We notified the police three months ago. It is laughable for them to go to their favourite friends in the judiciary who have completely disregarded our constitution and give them an injunction.

“Now, take it from me – we will disregard any unlawful order to stop us from going on a protest. We are going to defy any unconstitutional order that has been purportedly made by any court,” he stated.

This comment comes on the heels of the Ghana Police Service securing an injunction from the High Court of Justice against Democracy Hub’s planned three-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration.

The protest is intended to address key national issues such as socio-economic injustice, unemployment, rising poverty, state capture, nepotism, corruption, and the need for judicial independence.

Mr Barker-Vormawor described the injunction as “laughable to the point of ridiculous.”

“It appears that everybody in this country is entitled to go on demonstrations apart from #FixTheCountry. We have received continuous and perpetual injunctions from last year.

“In December when we wanted to go on a demonstration, an injunction was issued that Christmas is for merry-making and that we are not entitled to go on a demonstration, and this has happened again,” he added while recounting.

He added that “when the police continue to act lawlessly with the aid of the court who have no respect for our constitution, it is incumbent upon every citizen to defend the constitution and our right.”

In a statement released on Monday, the CFI highlighted the need to maintain order during the protest, which aims to pressure the EC into auditing the voter register.

They underscored that a peaceful demonstration would be in the best interests of both the NDC and the general public.

The CSOs expressed concerns that any disturbances could compromise the protest’s effectiveness and potentially result in legal and security issues.

They urged the NDC to work closely with the police to manage the event in a way that upholds democratic principles and public safety.

“We appeal to the NDC and all protest organizers to ensure these demonstrations remain peaceful and lawful. The safety of all Ghanaians must be the top priority, and any actions that could incite violence or unrest must be avoided at all costs.”

“We also call on the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, operating under the direction of the Police Command, to work closely with the protest organisers to ensure that the demonstrations are peacefully managed. It is essential that the right to protest is protected while safeguarding public order,” the statement read.

Speaking at rallies in Jinijini and Adamso, Bono Region, Mahama urged NDC supporters across the country to heed the call of the party’s National Chairman and join regional protests to pressure the EC to address their concerns.

John Mahama insists that, the Electoral Commission carries a posture which shows no readiness to address concerns raised about the 2024 voter register, by his party.

In view of this, he called on all NDC supporters, as well as Ghanaians who value peace, to join the demonstrations on September 17, 2024.

The protests, according to Mahama, will target every EC district office in the country as a means to pressure the commission to take action and ensure a transparent electoral process.

The party sympathizers will march to every EC office in their respective districts and make their demands known peacefully.

Originally scheduled for August 13, 2024, in Komenda, the protest has been rescheduled to September 17, 2024, and will now take place in Accra.

The demonstrators are demanding the cancellation of the lease agreement, insisting that the factory should return to its initial purpose of processing locally grown sugarcane rather than importing raw sugar.

They contend that the lease agreement was made without proper adherence to procedures and without adequate stakeholder consultation.

In a statement issued on September 3, 2024, the residents formally notified the police in accordance with Section 1, clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).

The group expects a turnout of at least 5,000 concerned Ghanaians from Accra and neighbouring regions. The protest will begin at 6:00 am from the 37 Lorry Station in Accra and will proceed to the Jubilee House.

They have requested police support and security to ensure a peaceful demonstration.

Nigeria Labour vows not to be silenced over mass suffering — NLC https://www.adomonline.com/nigeria-labour-vows-not-to-be-silenced-over-mass-suffering-nlc/ Wed, 21 Aug 2024 09:42:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2436726 Following the invitation of the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, by the police on allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime, the labour movement yesterday said it will not be silenced by state-sponsored harassment, intimidation, attacks and persecution.

The NLC said it remained committed to its opposition to mass suffering and hunger occasioned by the anti-people policies of the Federal Government, saying some interest groups are doing everything possible to silence the current leadership of Congress.

It also called on its affiliates to shut down the economy should Ajaero be arrested by the police.

This is as human rights activist and lawyer to the NLC, Chief Femi Falana, SAN, explained why Ajaero could not honour Police invitation for him to appear at the Force Headquarters yesterday, saying the labour leader can only appear on August 29.

Anger grows over Police invitation

These came as global workers’ groups and civil society organisations in the country, including Amnesty International Nigeria, ActionAid, among others, yesterday expressed angst against Ajaero’s invitation by the police.

One of the leaders of NLC, told Vanguard last night: “There are grand designs by some interest groups to silence NLC under the current leadership. But they fail to understand that we cannot be silenced.

“We are fighting a just cause. We have the right to express our views in a democracy. The workers elected us to fight and make demands for them. They are hungry, they are suffering, and they are dying and are in pain. These are what we are telling the government which they do not want to hear. These are the reasons they are after us, trying to cow us by all means.

“The operator of the bookshop (Iva Valley) has been on the second floor of Labour House for years. We did not bring him there. If he has issues with the police, what concerns us? We believe the state is using this as a cover-up. They aim to emasculate Labour because of their vested interest.”

NLC alerts global labour bodies

Meanwhile, NLC has intimated the international community, the International Labour Organisation, ILO, and the International Trade Union Confederation, ITUC, over the harassment, intimidation, and Police summoning of its President, Joe Ajaero over alleged criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime.

Also, lawyers, under the Abuja Human Rights Lawyers and Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, led by Deji Adeyanju, and his group yesterday stormed Labour House, which is NLC headquarters, to show solidarity and vowed to follow the NLC President to the Police station whenever he was honouring the invitation.

According to lawyers, if need be, the Police should be prepared to arrest and detain all of them, alongside the NLC President.

Rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, who confirmed this, said: “Yes, a coalition of Abuja lawyers just submitted a letter to the Police from Femi Falana, SAN, on behalf of NLC. Myself and three other lawyers, under the leadership of Femi Falana, did so today (yesterday).’’

Vanguard gathered that NLC leaders, besides sending the communiqué of the National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of yesterday to ILO, ITUC, has also intimated the international community of the grave developments of state harassment, intimidation, molestation of NLC and its leadership.

ITUC express concerns

Already, the ITUC, which represents 191 million members of 337 affiliates in 167 countries and territories, including Nigeria, has raised the alarm over what it decsribed as escalating attacks on the trade union movement in Nigeria.

ITUC in a statement by its General Secretary Luc Triangle, said: ITUC is gravely concerned by the escalating attacks on the trade union movement in Nigeria.

‘’This week, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, was summoned by the police as part of an investigation into ‘criminal conspiracy’ and ‘terrorism financing’.

‘’Earlier this month, heavily armed security forces raided and occupied the headquarters of the ITUC-affiliated NLC, arresting a union worker and wrecking the organisation’s bookshop. Reports indicated that 13 people were killed by security forces during a protest for economic justice.

“Since 2023, Nigerian trade unions have faced a campaign of harassment and intimidation, including the violent assault of Joe Ajaero in November. The situation in Nigeria is deeply concerning. These latest events come on the back of a sharp rise in intimidation and repression of trade unions.
“This includes the harassment of activists, the violation of collective bargaining rights and the violent suppression of peaceful protests.

“We see the systematic contravention of ILO conventions by the Nigerian government, particularly those related to freedom of association and the right to organise.

“Nigeria is a leader in Africa, it is important that the government there sets a good example regarding respect for human and labour rights and the rule of law. We call on the government to stop these attacks, including the intimidation and judicial harassment of Joe Ajaero and the NLC.”

ITUC Africa warns of dire consequences

Similarly, ITUC Africa, in a statement by General Secretary, Joel Odigie, said: “On behalf of the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), I am writing to express our grave concern and condemnation regarding the ongoing and egregious persecution of trade union leaders in Nigeria, specifically targeting the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its President, Joe Ajaero.

“It has come to our attention that Comrade Ajaero has been summoned by the Nigeria Police Force for interrogation on charges including ‘criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cyber-crime,’ as per the letter dated August 19, 2024.

“This action, accompanied by threats of arrest, is deeply troubling and appears to be a blatant misuse of state powers against trade union leaders exercising their fundamental rights.

‘’This conduct contravenes several international and national instruments designed to protect workers’ rights and freedoms as stipulated below: ILO Convention No. 87 (Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organize Convention, 1948): Guarantees the right of workers to freely organize and protect their interests without interference from the authorities. ILO Convention No. 98 (Right to Organize and Collective Bargaining Convention, 1949): Ensures that workers and employers are free to engage in collective bargaining without fear of reprisal.

“Nigerian’s Constitution under Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution protects the rights of citizens to assemble freely and associate with others, including the formation of and membership in trade unions.

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR): Article 20(1) asserts the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ICCPR: Article 22 guarantees the right to freedom of association and the ability to join trade unions.

“The recent actions against the NLC and its leaders, including the raid on their headquarters and the subsequent threats to Ajaero are an affront to these established rights and freedoms.

‘’Such measures not only undermine the principles of democracy and the rule of law, but also stifle legitimate dissent and undermine the role of trade unions in advocating for workers’ rights and social justice.’’

Nigerian govt targeting NLC leaders, Amnesty International alleges

Reacting to the development yesterday, Amnesty International Nigeria raised alarm over what it described as a concerted effort by the Nigerian government to undermine and intimidate the Nigerian Labour Congress and its leadership.

In a statement, the Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, condemned the fresh allegations of terrorism levelled against the NLC and its leaders, calling them a blatant attempt to cripple the union.

“Amnesty International is deeply concerned by the Nigerian authorities’ fresh attempts to further intimidate and harass the Nigerian Labour Congress through threats of arrest of its President Joe Ajaero,” Sanusi said.

He emphasised that the government’s actions are a clear violation of international human rights laws, particularly the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which guarantees the freedom of association.

“Workers cannot be targeted for participating in trade union activities,” he added.

Sanusi highlighted that in the past year, there had been an alarming increase in attempts by the Nigerian government to silence the NLC, a pattern he described as a “new low in this government’s human rights records.”

He recounted a series of incidents, including the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero last November, when he was allegedly beaten and blindfolded by Police officers in collaboration with thugs sponsored by the Imo State government.

“No one was held to account for the assault,” Sanusi noted, expressing concern over the impunity surrounding the case.

The group stated further: “The Nigerian government is clearly and unlawfully interfering with the functioning of an independent workers union by targeting its leaders with baseless accusations that are gradually crippling the activities of the union,” Sanusi stated.

Ajaero’s invitation disturbing – Yiaga Africa

Reacting to the invitation of the NLC boss by the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, the Executive Director, Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo said: “This invitation is a bit troubling and disturbing because some of the allegations the police are making are quite tough and serious allegations that cannot be ignored.

“So, I think that as a country, we need to really rise to the occasion to protect the rights of people who occupy leadership positions that hold government to account.

“Ajaero’s ordeal, which is an attack on his personality is not new. If you recall during the Imo elections, he was assaulted and brutalized, the NLC office was raided, and all linked to the #EndBadGovernance protest were also harassed.

“That this invitation is coming right after #EndBadGovernance protest is concerning, the Police need to be a lot more open and transparent to know what offence he has committed.

“But what is critical is to know that he is innocent until proven guilty and this is why those allegations are still allegations, they need to be proven.

“But I hope this is not an attempt to stifle dissent or an attempt to clampdown on individuals and organisations that speak and criticize government policies and actions.’’

Desperate attempts to silence labour — CISLAC

The Executive Director, Civil Society Legislative and Advocacy Centre, CISLAC, Auwal Rafsanjani, said: “We are deeply shocked and concerned by the ongoing attempts to incriminate, silence, and blackmail the leadership of Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, for its efforts to champion the rights and well-being of Nigerian workers.

“CISLAC recalls that on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, the NLC complex, popularly known as Labour House, was suddenly besieged by heavily armed security personnel. This invasion occurred just hours after NLC’s National Executive Council meeting, where members condemned the heavy-handed tactics employed by security agents during the #EndBadGovernance protests.

“Furthermore, the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, has been summoned by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team (IRT), over allegations of ‘criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.’

“The invitation, detailed in an official letter, requires the President of the NLC to appear for an interview on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the IRT complex in Guzape District, Abuja.

“While we do not oppose a Police investigation, we insist that it must be conducted in an open and transparent manner. This investigation must continue so that Nigerians can clearly see that the government is not fabricating allegations. The integrity of both the NLC and the Police is at stake.’’

We demand thorough investigation — ActionAid

Speaking on the invitation of the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, the Country Director, ActionAid Nigeria, AAN, Andrew Mamedu said: “I think there are laws governing the country with regards to invitation, so the question is are we following the laid down rules and regulations for inviting the NLC President.

“No one is above the law except you have immunity, which are very few persons in the country, and of course if you have immunity, after your tenure you will be prosecuted.

“For him (Ajero) to be invited, we have to dig deep into it and see the issues that are being alleged; are they actually correct and true? He has the right to fair hearing and he should be heard.

“It then becomes a norm where somebody is being hounded from what happened in Imo State to the ransacking of the offices at the NLC national secretariat to now being invited, maybe government is trying to keep that arm of civil society quiet because he is the leader of the labour movement and he is being outright in criticizing and engaging with the government, which is the labour movement’s requirements.

“If it is all because he is doing that and that is why all of these charges are being brought up, it is not good for our democracy. Our democracy will thrive if you allow every citizen, group to play their role, so NLC has got its role.’’

Why Ajaero turned down Police invitation

Eaelier, rights activist and lawyer to the NLC, Chief Femi Falana, SAN, explained why the NLC President could not honour the Police invitation yesterday.

According to him, the NLC President had fixed an engagement for August 20 before the Police invitation was sent to him on Monday and promised to be available at the Police headquarters on August 29.

Chief Falana, in a letter to the Inspector-General of Police, through DCP Mohammed Ahmed Sanusi, also requested the Police to furnish him with details of the allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime levelled against him.

The letter, titled “Re: Letter of Invitation,” which was signed by Samuel Ogala, read: “We are Solicitors to the Nigeria Labour Congress and its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, on whose behalf we write this letter in respect of the above subject matter.

“We have the instructions of Comrade Joe Ajaero to inform you that he is unable to honour your invitation on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, because your invitation letter was received by him yesterday (Monday). He has an engagement that had been fixed before the receipt of the invitation letter.

“Therefore, Comrade Ajaero is prepared for your interview on Wednesday, August 29, 2024.

Furthermore, in accordance with provisions of Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as altered, Comrade Ajaero requests for the details and nature of the allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime levelled against him.

“While awaiting your positive response to this letter, please accept the assurances of our highest esteem.”

NLC directs workers to shut down economy

Meantime, rising from its National Executive Council, NEC, yesterday, NLC directed its affiliates and allies in the country to immediately shut down the economy if the Police arrests the Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

Briefing workers who had assembled at Labour House in solidarity with the Congress President, NLC Deputy President, Kabiru Ado Sani, said the invitation to Ajaero was an invitation to workers.
He said: “At the end of the meeting, we reached some certain resolutions. Part of the resolutions is that, as a committed labour centre, we agreed or that we abide by the rule of law and due process.

“We will honour the invitation of the Nigerian police because we are not a faceless organization, but we believe that we need an extension of time, after consultation with our lawyers, because this invitation was extended to the Congress President yesterday (Monday) and asked to report at the police by 10am today (yesterday).

“So we are already working with our lawyers to look for extension of time, but this does not legitimize the charges by the Nigerian police to the Congress leadership, and secondly, we resolve that in an event our Congress president was arrested or detained at any moment, we put our affiliates on red alert to mobilize our membership across the country, that all workers in this country should down tools.

“This is the resolution because comrades, this organization belongs to all of us, therefore, we should do everything possible to safeguard the safety of this organization. We, therefore, thank you very much, and you should wait for further directives by our leadership.

“Whatever happens, we will communicate your leadership, and your leadership will communicate you. So we urge you to remain calm and go back peacefully to our work place and await further directives.”

Electricity workers kick

Reacting yesterday, the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, in a statement by its Acting General Secretary, Iwebike Dominic, said: “NUEE notes with utter dismay the political machinations surrounding the police invitation of its general secretary cum president of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, as a purported fall out of the politically motivated investigation into alleged trump-up charges of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy and treasonable felony against him.

“It is not only embarrassing but childish and clueless for the Federal Government to take to the antics of witch-hunting, harassment, intimidation and name-calling, instead of coming out openly to apologize to the Congress and its leadership for the unlawful invasion of NLC national headquarters a few days ago.

‘’The choice by the government to stifle labour and free speech in the country as a tool to compel Nigerians to continue to suffer in silence in the face of government policies that are not favourable to the people, is quite deploring.

“Those in government, especially elected leaders, should be mindful of their actions in times like this, if they have the love of the country at heart. It is so painful to see this happening in a democracy where it is supposed to be government of the people, by the people and for the people.

“Thus, we are using this medium to call on our national, zonal, state and chapter leadership to commence immediate mobilization of our teaming members in generation, transmission and distribution to withdrawal our services in the event that Comrade Joe Ajaero is arrested.’’

Textile union directs members to prepare for strike

Similarly, the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, NUTGTWN, directed its members nationwide to prepare for industrial action should the Police arrest Ajaero.

Leaders of NUTGTWN at the 91st Central Working Committee, CWC, meeting of the union yesterday, raised the alarm over the increasing harassment, intimidation and attacks on the leadership of the NLC.

A communiqué issued by the President and General Secretary, Peters Godonu and Ali Baba, respectively, read: “CWC-in-session condemns the continuous attempt by the current administration tto suppress, weaken, harass and intimidate the labour union in Nigeria and its leaders.

“In particular, the CWC condemns the recent raid on the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress by overzealous security operatives and the ensuing invitation of NLC President, Joe Ajaero, by the Nigeria Police Force for questioning over allegation of terrorism.

“The CWC notes that the continuous attack on NLC and its President by security operatives is unlawful, provocative, undemocratic and grossly unacceptable. It calls for a stop to violation of the rights of workers and the abuse of power against an independent institution, such as NLC.
‘’Such actions by security forces are capable of eroding public trust and confidence in institutions that are supposed to protect and serve the people.’’

CDWR demands an end to intimidation

In its reaction, Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights, CDWR, condemned the invasion of the headquarters of the NLC and the invitation of Joe Ajaero, the NLC President, on trumped-up criminal allegations by the Police’s IRT.

In a statement, CDWR’s National Publicity Secretary, Chinedu Bosah, said: “We have not forgotten that Joe Ajaero was attacked and beaten up in Imo State by state-sponsored thugs and security agents in November 2023 which led to his hospitalization.

“It is clear that President Tinubu-led regime is now a civilian dictatorship which uses brute force to crush all dissenting views and genuine opposition. We are now back to the dark days of the military where activists were arrested, abducted, detained, tortured and sometimes killed.

‘’In addition to what happened during the military regimes, wherein the police and military were regularly used to attack activists, the Tinubu government is enlisting the judiciary, gangs and thugs to repress democratic and constitutional rights.

“The government has also started to freeze bank accounts belonging to non-governmental organisations, NGOs, and pro-people organisations. We condemn this arm-twisting and repressive tactics of the government.

‘’These attacks are clear warnings to the leadership of the NLC, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, and other pro-people organizations to commence the process of organizing resistance to this ever-increasing and dangerous tyranny.

‘’It is a grave error for the leadership of NLC and TUC to allow the Tinubu-led government to implement devastating economic policies and only resort to bargain improved minimum wage, an act that is welcomed but not enough to mitigate the consequences of anti-poor policies.

“Aside from the fact that many state governments will not pay unless compelled to do so through mass struggle, the little gains of the N70,000 poverty wage will be neutralised soon by the rising cost of living.

“There is an urgent need for the trade union leadership to adequately mobilize for mass protest and strike in response to all anti-people policies, hardship and hunger in the land and attacks on democratic rights.

‘’This is the only way the enemies of the working people and masses can be resisted and defeated. Besides, the trade union leadership should mobilize the working masses and youth for a political alternative by forming and building a working people’s party to challenge and defeat these self-serving capitalist parties.’’

Why I led a protest in my SHS at age 16 – A-Plus reveals https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-led-a-protest-in-my-shs-at-age-16-a-plus-reveals/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 12:46:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2432592

Renowned social activist, Kwame A-Plus, has shared how he led a massive demonstration  at Breman Asikuma Senior High School when he was just 16.

In an interview on Hitz FM, A-Plus stated that his love for political activism and his quest to be unique among students led to the protest.

He began his activism by creating a ‘Friends of JJ Rawlings’ group, in school just to taunt his headmaster who was a sympathizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The move led to his suspension but strengthened his love for activism.

Upon returning from his suspension, A-Plus said he led the first students protest about 30 years ago to address the lack of electricity at his school.

He remarked that, the institution was relying on a generator, which he and his peers found inadequate, for which he organized a protest that saw the entire student body marching to town.

The protestors made their way to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the District Chief Executive (DCE) office, and the Omanhene to demand a connection to the national grid.

This demonstration, he said, marked a rare occasion in the school’s history where students directly advocated for their needs.

The success of the protest nurtured him to become the infamous social commentator he is today.

Komenda protest: Convenor questions credibility of firm leasing sugar factory https://www.adomonline.com/komenda-protest-convenor-questions-credibility-of-firm-leasing-sugar-factory/ Tue, 06 Aug 2024 18:23:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2429940 The convenor for the Concerned Citizens of Komenda Traditional Area, Samuel Awudza has described the decision to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to West Africa Agro Limited as misleading.

He also questioned the credibility of the company noting that,  there is no evidence that West Africa Agro Limited has prior operations in Ghana.

“The government claims this company will take over the factory, but they only visited here six months ago. If someone says they are now coming to work at the Komenda Sugar Factory, then the person doesn’t know. The company has no track record in Ghana,” he emphasized.

Mr Awudza believes that local expertise is sufficient to manage the factory.

“A Ghanaian can manage the Komenda Sugar Factory. We don’t need an outsider to come and work and give us a profit of 10 million dollars. We have the people in Ghana,” he stated in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Tuesday.

Watch the video below:

During a visit to the factory, the Minister of Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond, on behalf of the government announced a lease plan.

The plan aims to revive the factory’s operations and meet domestic sugar demand. The lease agreement is set for a renewable term of 15 to 20 years.

Despite the government’s assurances, local residents remain unconvinced and are preparing to take to the streets in protest, demanding that the factory be managed by Ghanaians for the benefit of the local community.

Tutuka residents suspend protest against Newmont after 3 days https://www.adomonline.com/tutuka-residents-suspend-protest-against-newmont-after-3-days/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 08:08:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2428168 Residents of the Tutuka enclave in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo region have suspended their three-day protest against Newmont at Kenyasi.

The suspension comes after the intervention of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources regarding unpaid resettlement money.

The residents had been picketing for three days to demand payment of resettlement funds amounting to GHS 21 million from the gold mining company.

The intervention by the Ministry, alongside local chiefs, the Ahafo Regional Minister, and the Asutifi North District Chief Executive, has brought a temporary halt to the protest.

The Saamanhene of Kenyasi No. 1, Nana Anim Dankwah, addressed the picketers on behalf of the Ministry and local authorities.

He announced that following a closed-door meeting with the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Newmont’s management in Accra, the Ministry has committed to engaging with the company’s managers in Denver, USA, within a week to ensure the payment is made to the affected residents.

Nana Anim Dankwah assured the residents that the chiefs would exert all possible pressure on Newmont to secure the payment, urging them to remain calm and await a positive outcome from the Ministry’s efforts.

In an interview with Adom News, one of the leaders of the aggrieved residents, Nana Kwabena Amoateng, confirmed the suspension of the protest.

He warned, however, that if Newmont fails to provide a satisfactory response within the promised timeframe, the residents will resume their picketing.

Amoateng also revealed that, the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council has assured them of reimbursing the expenses incurred during the protest.

According to community leaders, Johnson Owusu Prempeh and Nana Kwabena Amoateng, Newmont had committed to paying resettlement monies as agreed upon with the EPA and local chiefs.

However, the company has yet to fulfill this promise, prompting residents to continue their protest until they receive the owed payments.

Tensions escalated as Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, causing one of the protestors to collapse.

In response, Emmanuel Ato Aubeng, the Community Relations Manager for Newmont Ahafo South Mines, appealed to the residents to cease their picketing.

He assured them that all involved parties would be meeting in Accra during the week to resolve the issue.

However, the hundreds of protestors have refused to stand down, insisting that picketing will continue until they receive substantial evidence of the payment.

They have set up kitchen wares and are cooking at the protest grounds, with many prepared to sleep at the venue.

Meanwhile, there is a heavy Police presence in the area to maintain calm.

Kenya rocked by fresh protests despite president’s U-turn over tax bill https://www.adomonline.com/kenya-rocked-by-fresh-protests-despite-presidents-u-turn-over-tax-bill/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 03:04:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2414617 Police in Kenya fired tear gas on protesters as a fresh wave of demonstrations swept the country, despite President William Ruto’s U-turn on controversial tax plans.

Fresh protests dubbed “One Million People March” began Thursday, with demonstrators calling for roads leading to the capital Nairobi to be blocked.

Others threatened to occupy the State House, the president’s office, and the official residence.

In a surprise move on Wednesday, Ruto said he would not sign the finance bill, saying he had been “listening keenly” to the Kenyan people.

He had been facing escalating protests over the bill, with a civil society organization saying at least 23 people had died in clashes.

But so far his move has failed to quell the demonstrations. Security forces have set up roadblocks around routes leading to the State House, while other parts of the capital city have been fortified with heavy police presence.

“It’s more than about the finance bill now,” Maria, a Kenyan protester from Nairobi, told CNN.

“(They’re) killing us as young people for what? We come in peace,” she added.

Despite being billed as a ‘million people march,’ turnout was noticeably lower in Nairobi’s central business district, a CNN team observed. The heavy security presence within the city deterred a crowd from forming with police shouting at protesters to “go home” in Swahili.

What the largely youthful protesters now want varies. Some have called on President Ruto to resign for failing to withdraw the unpopular bill much earlier to save the lives lost.

Others are seeking justice for the deceased protesters and demanding the recall of lawmakers who voted in support of the finance bill.

“I want them to listen to me,” another protester told CNN.

Civic groups such as the Law Society of Kenya are calling for the removal of Kenya’s inspector general of police and Nairobi’s regional police commander after officers were accused of reportedly shooting dead protesters.

Kenya, East Africa’s dominant economy, has grappled with escalating living costs that have spiked food prices and other commodities. The nation also owes billions of dollars in foreign and local debts, spending a sizeable chunk of its revenue repaying its creditors.

“I am not going to preside over a bankrupt country, I am not going to preside over a country that is in debt distress,” President Ruto said last month while defending his plans.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expressed concern about a “significant shortfall” in Kenya’s “tax revenue collection” while urging its government to consider measures to shore up its earnings to reduce borrowing.

The bill proposed levies on locally produced products, such as diapers and sanitary towels, including taxes on motor vehicles, and mobile money transfer fees, among others.

Last week, Ruto shelved some of those taxes, but Kenyans remain angry, and called for the bill to be scrapped completely.

International financial ratings agency Moody’s warned that scrapping the bill “will create a revenue shortfall” in Kenya’s budgeting. Ruto warned of spending cuts across government financing if the tax measures were withdrawn.

Ruto’s leadership is now being tested like never before. His ability to navigate this period of unrest will be critical not only for his political survival but also for the stability of Kenya.

The ongoing protests suggest that mere policy reversals may not be sufficient. Analyst Herman Manyora, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, told CNN the president may need to engage in more substantial reforms to restore faith in his administration.

“The way forward is for the president to go a little more than he has done now in order to get the goodwill of the people,” Manyora said. “He needs to reshuffle his cabinet and economic advisers, which will send a signal that will create the goodwill required. At that point, a government-led conversation can take place.”

Ruto, whose rise to the presidency was largely propelled by youth voters said in his address retracting the finance bill that he hoped to engage with young people in the country to listen to their ideas and proposals on how to solve the nation’s economic challenges. But that won’t come easy, Manyora said.

“They (young people) feel betrayed. That’s what is fuelling this riot.”
