He claimed he drove the illegal miners to a location where they buried the pregnant woman alive to help them get more gold.

Though the incident happened in 2022, the taxi driver said he is still being haunted by the incident.

He said three illegal miners in November 2022, hired his taxi from Koforidua to Osino, after making a stop in Sehwi to pick up a priest.

Before the priest joined them, the taxi driver claimed the miners had captured the pregnant woman, tied her up, and rubbed pepper all over her body.

They then dug a hole, placed her inside, and the fetish priest to perform some rituals. They then buried the helpless woman alive.

“They were armed and gave me instructions. The woman was begging for water, but they refused and mercilessly buried her alive,” the driver recounted on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Wednesday.

Despite his initial attempts to report the incident to the Police, he claimed the Police advised him to remain silent and leave the matter alone, leaving the taxi driver deeply traumatized by the event.

“After I dropped them, I went to report the incident to the Osino Police station. However, they told me to keep quiet about it and leave. The experience has haunted me so much that I panic every time I see a pregnant woman. I have moved to Accra because I am still scared of the place,” he stated.

The data also showed that 4.05 per cent of the number were severely anaemic, while 37.55 per cent reported to the antenatal clinics anaemic at registration (first day of visit).

Samuel Atuahene Antwi, the Tema Metropolitan Nutritionist in an interview said, “Anaemia at 36 weeks of pregnancy increased by 84 per cent in 2024, as compared to 2023.”

Mr Antwi revealed that Tema Manhean recorded the highest increase of 31.3 per cent in anaemia at 36 weeks from 23.16 to 72.4 per cent respectively for the 2023 and 2024 first halves.

He said 1,804 pregnant women received nutrition counselling and “only 30 per cent of ANC attendants had their BMI checked to monitor their nutritional status.”

He stated that the high number of anaemic expectant mothers could be attributed to their intake of inadequate iron-rich foods, for which household food insecurity due to economic hardship could also be the cause.

However, a few of them who might have certain nutritious foods available did not take it because of some traditional and spiritual beliefs concerning those foods, he said.

Mr Antwi urged pregnant women to take adequate iron-rich foods such as red meat, liver, shrimp, fish, eggs, milk, and dark green leafy vegetables.

These should be consumed alongside oranges, pineapples, and other vitamin C-rich fruits to help absorb the iron.

Jessica Craner said her pregnancy became a “torturous” experience as she endured an almost 24-hour illness which left her feeling like she had been “poisoned”.

The first-time mum, from Huddersfield, had started suffering from intense nausea and vomiting at about six weeks pregnant with daughter Anna, lasting until she was 20 weeks.

Jessica had been suffering from Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) – a condition at the extreme end of the pregnancy sickness spectrum, affecting about 3% of people with pregnancy sickness

Kate Middleton suffered with the illness, and Jessica said left her feeling constantly dizzy and weak, adding it was like a “sickness bug that never goes”, reports ExaminerLive.

Jessica said: “The mental trauma of feeling so shocking has no escape and will stay with me forever. I was on four different meds, and nothing really seemed to work. I felt desperate.”

“From 6 weeks to 20 weeks I had constant, 24-hour intense nausea and vomiting up to 40 times a day. I felt dizzy and weak. It was like a sickness bug never goes. It felt torturous but public perception was quite dismissive, which makes you feel much worse and ‘weak’. It wasn’t until I gave birth that the vomiting stopped.

“When I contacted Pregnancy Sickness Support (PSS), i then felt listened to and was given immediate support and in touch with a peer supporter who was amazing. The difference she made to my pregnancy; I will always be grateful to her.”

Pregnancy Sickness Support provides several services to alleviate the suffering of those experiencing HG including (but not limited to) our helplines, training health care professionals, facilitating new research and providing peer support. The peer support service matches a HG sufferer with a volunteer who has lived through and understands the condition.

They provide emotional support to ensure that the sufferer does not feel alone during their HG battle. Having used this service herself, Jessica now offers her time as a volunteer. She said: “I am now a peer supporter and the women I supported over the years are so grateful. It means the world to them like it did for me. To help keep Pregnancy Sickness Support running to support the women and babies is paramount. It is lifesaving.”

The cost of supporting one person experiencing HG throughout their pregnancy is £150. Jessica is aiming to raise £600 to support four HG sufferers of the future, in their time of need.

Revealing her plight while looking for answers in a ‘tell-it-all’ platform, the woman stated that her house help has impregnated her only daughter.

According to her, she relocated the boy from their village to her home, in a bid to help him get on his feet.

Two months in, and before their intended purpose could be met, she said the young man has put her daughter in a family way.

She is seeking for answers on how to deal with the situation and how to inform her husband who stays overseas of the development.

I thought I was trying to help the poor boy who came from a very poor background. I picked him up from the village since my husband stays overseas and I am also a working class lady.

I needed someone to help me do my house chores and also stay at home while I travel. I told my mum in the village and she told me of a young boy who is hardworking and humble.

He wasn’t even going to school anymore because his father is late and his mum is a full time housewife. I decided to bring him into my home since he was from a good family background, besides, his mother is a good Christian.

I took him into my home and made him attend a private secondary school so he can write WAEC that year. The boy repaid my kindness to him by sleeping with my daughter and got her pregnant. It all happened in the space of two months. How do I tell my husband that our daughter is pregnant for a house boy? How do I deal with this pregnancy?”

Joel Malaya Muchacha was shocked to find his heavily pregnant wife Trinity Makumucha (30) in bed with his best friend Kennias Musakona (41), a local tabloid reports.

After Musakona refused to pay eight beasts which Muchacha had demanded as compensation, the latter decided to dump his wife at the former’s house.

According to a source privy to the incident, upon his return from work in Chikombedzi,  he heard rumours that his wife was having an affair with Musakona each time he’s away for work.

After busting them, Muchacha took the matter to community leaders where he demanded eight beasts from Musakona as compensation for bedding his wife but Musakona refused to pay the beasts, prompting Muchacha to dump his wife at his house.

In a brain-teasing post she dropped on Instagram, she made reference to a particular moment she was on a vacation with her husband, barely a year after their marriage.

She noted that that spot at the Dead Sea in Jordan was where the journey of motherhood began for her.

On that trip, she and her husband participated in a muddy challenge which saw them cover each other in dirt.

“Do you remember these pictures? That was two years ago and just the two of us at the Dead Sea in Jordan. We are back again but this time there are three of us. Yes three of us because baby Munir @princemunirnwoko is here.”

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s weekend entertainment show dubbed Ahosepe Xtra, Adina said she will perform until the end.

I think apart from entertainment industry, even in offices people don’t want to employ women because of maternity leave and all. For me, I want to proof that thing wrong. I don’t believe because you are a woman you have to take a full break, she said.

I wanna be pregnant and be performing until I can’t any more. I would want the doctor to tell me that. After birth, I would still like to be working, Adina explained.

New York college professor Ari Nagel, 44 – also known as The Sperminator – was asked on today’s episode of The Dr. Oz Show about his motivation for helping women have babies, and whether ‘narcissism’ plays a role.

“No. Maybe I’m not good at saying no,’ Ari replied. “I would describe myself that way, but definitely not. I have a great life, even if I struggle financially. I get lots of hugs and kisses every single day.”

Ari – who doesn’t charge for his services – continued: “I think the motivation of why I help these women, in some ways, why does anyone have kids? I think in some ways I’m getting a lot of the joy and love that a lot of other parents experience.”

Ari previously revealed he used to conceive ‘the old-fashioned way’ and would have sex with the women to help them conceive. However, since learning of other ways to conceive, he now delivers his sperm in a ‘cup’ so that he is able to protect himself and the other women he’d be helping that month.

During today’s show, he explained why he began donating so frequently – when many men haven’t thought of doing it once, let alone 77 times. “I have two 12-year-old kids and I think it’s quite indicative of maybe the women that you have here on the show today,” explained Ari.

“One was a lesbian couple and they needed help, obviously, to grow their family, and then the other one was a single woman who wasn’t meeting Mr Right. she was in her 40s and she needed help and she couldn’t wait any longer to meet somebody.”

“Then you asked me why I’m helping them. It’s brought me a lot of joy seeing how happy the kids are, how happy the mums are, and seeing all these beautiful families that I was able to help grow.” Though many sperm donors never meet the children they father or might have limited contact with them, Ari has previously said that he has relationships with several of his kids.

Speaking to Dr. Oz, Ari also discussed his experience with the State Department of Health and defended his right to continue donating sperm. “Well, they wrote me that letter, certified, it went to my work,” he said.

“I think they just read an article in the New York Post and they said, “What’s going on here? He needs to apply to be a licensed clinic,” and that I need to stop advertising my services. ‘But in the end, I think when I clarified what I’m actually doing, it’s ultimately an infringement on every man’s right, I think, to have a child.’ ‘I think that they did back down, they said they reserve the right to pursue legal action in the future, but for now, I can continue doing what I’m doing, because of course, I’m not operating a licensed sperm bank.

Of course, I do get paid with lots of hugs and kisses and a lifetime of appreciation,’ he said. ‘I get a lot of joy of being a father to so many kids. Some of them I see every day, some of them I’ve never met. It’s up to the family.”

Though many of the women he helps are based in the US, which ‘make it much easier,’ others are abroad and require some travel. “I went to Africa twice last month to try and meet women to help them conceive.

“The month before that I was in Barbados and then Georgia, the country, not the state,” he said in May. “The month before that I went to Russia, so sometimes travel is involved but the vast majority of the time they are within the US.”

He went on to explain that the 13 women who are currently pregnant by him all received his sperm in a cup and artificially inseminated themselves – but occasionally, when the women are older, they may go to a clinic.

However, he added: “Around a dozen of my children were conceived the old-fashioned way. Early on when I didn’t really know of another way to conceive that was the way I was going about it.

“But of course, now that I’m helping more than one woman in a month it’s very difficult to have unprotected sex while still being able to protect myself and the other women I’d be helping that month. Ari currently appears to be single, and his dating profiles state that he is a 6ft 3in Jewish man with a graduate degree who never smokes but sometimes drinks alcohol and works out.”

Narrating issues of his marriage on Nhyira FM’s Obra, the man, Joseph, said he was eager to wed his lover of two years after her family assured him that she was a virgin.

Attorney Francis Asobayire in an interview with Adom News says an application for bail has been made by counsel for the accused at the last adjourned date in February 2021.

The prosecution in opposition to this application argued that the accused did not show any medical record of the pregnancy as alleged by the counsel for the accused.

The court, after listening to both sides made an order for a pregnancy test to be carried out on the 1st accused, Serina.

The case has been adjourned to 29 and 30th of March for continuation as both still plead not guilty to the offense.

However, State Attorney Francis Asobayire has said that copies of a videotape intended to be used at the trial ought to be disclosed as it has been done today in the court, giving prospects to the case.

The two suspects, Hajia Serina and Latifa Bumaya have, however, been remanded in prison custody in Tamale.

Lukeman Sanche, a 25-year-old accused of raping a seven-month-old pregnant woman, is to be put before court today, Monday, December 16, 2019.

The alleged rape is said to have occurred at Tijo in the Mion district of the Northern region on December 9, 2019 at 3:pm.

Superintendent Kwabena Acheampong of the Northern Regional Police Command, confirming the incident on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem on Monday, said the pregnant woman while leading her animals to feed in a nearby bush was pounced on and raped by the accused.

Following the incident, Musa Briamah, husband of the pregnant woman filed a complaint at the Regional Crime Department in Tamale, on December 11, 2019.

The victim was subsequently issued a medical form for examination at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. 

According to Supt. Acheampong, the arrest of Mr Sanche was effected on Saturday December 14, following the confirmation by a gynecologist at the Tamale Teaching Hospital that the woman had indeed been raped.

He added that the suspect during interrogation confessed to the crime and is currently in the custody of the Northern Regional Police Command and will be put before court today, December 16.

Guedes, who is a nurse died after suffering a stroke while on her way to the church for her wedding in the Brazillian city of São Paulo on Sunday, September 15, 2019.

According to a report on Metro.co.uk the deceased fell sick on the way and her family had thought she was suffering from anxiety

But it turned out that she was suffering from pre-eclampsia which eventually took her life and deprived her of seeing her baby. After getting some support from her entourage, Guedes was rushed to a hospital where she declared brain dead by doctors shortly after arriving following a stroke.

All this while, her fiancé who is a firefighter, Lieutenant Flavio Gonçalvez, 31, was waiting at the altar and was surprised by the delay.

“I was worried because I was waiting for her at the altar and she was taking ages to come in. A cousin of hers ran down the carpet and told me that she had passed out.I opened the car door and she was lying down but regained consciousness to talk to me. I said to her, ‘Baby, I’m here’.

She replied that everything was fine, but that she had severe pain in the back of her neck. At that moment, I became a rescuer, as I have been for seven years with the Fire Department.

‘I took her out of the limo, started first aid and asked for help from my firefighter friends who were there as guests,” Gonçalvez stated.

Guedes was rushed to a state maternity hospital in central São Paulo. However, due to the complexity of the case, she was transferred to the private Pro Matre Paulista Maternity Hospital.

According to the medical report the mother had a stroke brought on by pre-eclampsia as well as internal bleeding, which meant surgeons were forced to remove the uterus.

Given the severity of the case the medical team performed an emergency caesarean section to save the 29-week-old baby’s life, but the young mum passed away shortly after the operation.

 Sophia, who was born weighing just 2.05lbds and measuring 34 centimeters, is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Mr Alex Kwaku Duah, the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Director of Education disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after he had toured the seven BECE centres in the municipality.

The centres are Tarkwa Senior High School, Fiaseman Senior High School, Tarkwa Roman Catholic School, Dadwen School Complex, New Atuabo Community school, Dompim Methodist school and Nsuaem Ghana Rubber Easter Basic school.

The investigation led by Dr. Reiko Matilda Kpesese found 71 per cent depression prevalence among mothers below 18 years.

According to a 2006 study, depression affects about 20% of women during their lifetime, with pregnancy being a period of high vulnerability.

A study concluded in 2014 in Ghana also found 9.9 per cent prevalence of depression during pregnancy among pregnant women.

The study as part of her final year thesis sought to assess the risk factors and effects of depression during pregnancy among 100 pregnant women in the Ningo Prampram District in the Greater Accra region.

“The women were screened for signs and symptoms of depression using Patient Health Questionnaire-9,” she said.

Though previous studies suggest depression during pregnancy ranges from 4% to 20%, the current study found 33 per cent prevalence.

Previous and induced abortion, lack of partner support, low-income level, first-time pregnancy, partner employment status and cohabitation were other factors found to increase the risk.

Surprisingly, women who were depressed were more likely to attempt abortion, “as high as 64 per cent,” she said.

Though women with low educational background were found to be at high risk, having a tertiary level of education could not insulate one from plunging into depression.

Dr Reiko Kpesese recommends screening for depression during pregnancy and increased awareness creation on this aspect of maternal health.

Fearing for his life, Pastor Nyame informed the leadership of his church who later accompanied him to the priestess for an amicable resolution of the issue.

The move yielded some result as the priestess was asked to reverse the curse she had placed on the pastor and she agreed on condition.

The condition was for pastor Nyame Asuokomfo to accept the pregnancy and promise to marry her after she had delivered her baby.

The pastor accepted responsibility and also pledged to marry the priestess after she delivers.

“Our daughter has been sick for some time now. We have roamed a lot of places in search of cure but we have not been successful. Some months ago, we realised that she was pregnant. We have been looking for the man who did it,” Mr Ransford Asare Budu, an uncle of the mother of twins, told The Mirror.

The plight of the 35-year-old mentally disturbed woman, Baby Ama, who lives in Asarekrom, a village in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region, shocked many in the community when she gave birth on June 22, 2018.

In Twi, while ‘Shoa ye mobor’ means “testicles are miserable”, ‘Kote ye aboa’ loosely translates as “Penis is a fool”, with ‘Etwe nim nyansa’ meaning “Vagina is wise”.

He said one of Ama’s cousins was returning home one evening when she heard a baby crying. She dashed there only to find that Ama had given birth.

“She called for help and the traditional birth attendant realised that there was still another baby inside the womb. By God’s grace, in no time, she gave birth to the second one,” he stated.

He said the family immediately decided that Ama would not feed the babies given her mental situation, hence the following day, they bought infant milk for the babies.

The babies were also handed over to one of Ama’s cousins to be taken care of.

Mr Badu said after the delivery, a nearby clinic was informed and a nurse came to cut the umbilical cords of the babies and the necessary medications given them.

Antenatal care

From the 12th week of the pregnancy, Ama received antenatal care from the Abokyikrom CHPS Compound.

The nurse who took care of her, Mrs Elizabeth Kroffa, told The Mirror that the task was not easy but she received immense support from Ama’s family.

“Sometimes when I come, she would refuse the injection, checking of her blood pressure or taking her medication but the family members would calm her down for me to administer all the drugs and vaccines, including tetanus from 16 weeks. Every month, I gave her all the necessary medications,” she said.

She added that Ama went through the antenatal care but the delivery occurred in the evening under the supervision of a traditional birth attendant.

“By God’s grace, she delivered safely without any complications,” she said.

Mrs Kroffa, said though she was initially scared, she eventually got used to Ama and enjoyed taking care of her, adding that “a person’s mental state should never be a hindrance to receiving medical care. She is human and that is what matters”.

Medical check-up

Meanwhile, the Abirim Government Hospital sent a medical team led by a Physician, Mr Enoch Yeboah, to assess the medical state of Ama and the babies and to determine the kind of medical support she needed.

They supported Ama with medications, some of which are not on the list of the National Health Insurance Scheme and needed to be bought by families of patients.

“We contributed to buy some of the medications. The hospital sent us here to assess the situation and take the necessary measures to ensure that the babies and their mother were safe and healthy,” he added.

A Community Mental Health Officer, Ms Priscilla Serwa, said Ama would be cared for until she was okay.

“We will be visiting her frequently, monitoring her weekly or monthly to ensure that she fully recovers. The good thing is that she lives with her family who can easily offer the necessary support,” she explained.

Tenyo Kandabekuni alias Wareware, has been accused by the police of giving the 15-year-old girl some medicine in an attempt to abort the pregnancy.

The alleged medicine, according to deputy regional police spokesperson, Sgt. Francis Gamodo, was in the form of a concoction and after drinking it on the instruction of the suspect, the girl became unconscious.

He told DAILY GUIDE that the girl was rushed to the Ekye Amanfrom Presby Health Centre for treatment but the suspect bolted.

Sgt. Francis Gamodo said the Unit Committee Chairman for Boakyekrom, near Ekye Amanfrom, Madam Abeilla Banaa, who got the information, reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of Tenyo.

The police officer said that Tenyo had been charged with defilement and attempted abortion in the interim and that the police were preparing his docket for him to be arraigned before court.

Across town, Darnellys Rodríguez is living the consequences of these shortages.

She had her first baby when she was 15 years old. Then she had a second baby, and hoped that would be it, but then she got pregnant with her third.
“My first reaction was to cry,” she says. “Getting contraceptive pills is really hard. There’s nothing and when you can get hold of them, the cost is beyond my reach.”
Financially it is a struggle. She lives with her children and partner in a corrugated iron shack in a poor neighbourhood of Barquisimeto.
Now she is pregnant, she says her older boys have to go without clothes and shoes so she can pay for some of her medical tests.
“I’m making plans to get sterilised,” she says. “The idea of having another baby is too much.”

Teenage mothers

According to the United Nations Population Fund, around one in four babies in Venezuela is born to a teenager. The country has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in Latin America.
“It’s a situation that’s got worse in the last year,” says Delia Mondragón, the vice-president of the Association of Family Planning in Lara state, where Barquisimeto is located.

“It’s especially hard for young people. A box of contraceptives could cost as much as what their parents earn [in a month], or even double that.”
Every weekday, her waiting room is full of women coming for advice or medical help.
One of the other big concerns is malnutrition. Recent research suggests that three-quarters of Venezuelans lost weight in the past year, an average of 9kg (20lb).

Supply shortages

Women are often asked to bring a “kit” of medical supplies to the cash-strapped public hospitals. Gloves, antibiotics and robes to hand to the doctor before they give birth.
There are no official statistics but paediatrician Dr Huniades Urbina Medina, the president of the Venezuelan Society of Childcare and Paediatrics, says that of the births he attends, the vast majority are now unplanned.
He says it is a public health emergency.
“An adolescent at 12 or 13 or even 15 is a child giving birth to another child,” he says.
“They don’t understand what it means to be a mother. It’s like a play for them but it’s a real problem for us paediatricians, for obstetrics, for the hospital, for the future of the country.”
Dr Urbina blames the problem squarely on the government. “When an adolescent gives birth, almost 80% leave school and that’s a big problem,” he says.
“The government, instead of teaching sex education, gives you money if you are an adolescent mother, gives you a house. So a teenager thinks if she if gets pregnant, she can leave her house and become an adult.”
The BBC asked to speak to the health ministry but had no response.

Fear of unwanted pregnancy

Betsimar Villalobos Reinosa is certainly growing up in 2017. She turned 15 and, like many Venezuelan girls, had a big party or quinceañera, marking her passage into womanhood.

And in two months’ time there is another important date: the birth of her daughter Josehanny Alicet.
The family says her pregnancy was a surprise and a disappointment to them.
But her mother Juana is practical and says she will do what she can to support her daughter.
“I never imagined it would happen,” she says. “There’ve been lots of young girls getting pregnant recently because of the crisis. Some girls try and find men because they’re going hungry – they want somebody to provide for them.”
Betsimar wants to go back to school after the birth of Josehanny but there are no guarantees that will happen.
“I’m afraid,” she says. “Once I give birth, because it’s hard to get contraceptives and condoms, I’m scared if I have sex I will get pregnant again.”
BBC
